This project will identify injury risk factors and predictors of injury, trial targeted interventions designed to better manage and prevent injury, and profile the psychological and physical health of professional musicians working within the eight premier state orchestras of Australia. The project aims to develop, implement and evaluate comprehensive multidisciplinary interventions to reduce the current unacceptably high rate of injury in this population and to support musicians in the management of psychological issues such as music performance anxiety and occupational stress. The project will provide an international benchmark for injury risk assessment and management within the orchestral workplace, assessment of physical and mental health of professional musicians and track injury trajectories, thereby facilitating the development of effective Occupational Health and Safety policies for professional Australian orchestral musicians at risk of a prematurely shortened career due to injury.

more information

This would normally be with a department of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, but where appropriate could also be with the Faculty of Law, School of Business or School of Design & Environment at the National University of Singapore.

Interested applicants are required to submit their application to ARI at the address stated below by 15th November 2007, indicating clearly both which ARI interdisciplinary area they wish to join and which department they would be attached to. Application procedures and forms can be obtained from the NUS website via this URL: http://www.nus. edu.sg/registrar /edu/gd-applnres feeform.html

Applicants must use the application forms in the respective Faculty websites depending on the Faculty to which they wish to seek admission. They should send their applications to ARI directly.

The following interdisciplinary areas or "clusters" are offering scholarships:
1) The Migration Cluster (Research Leader: Professor Brenda Yeoh) explores the issues arising from increased levels of human mobility in the region, both within and across national borders. Mobility of high-level professional and managerial personnel, labour migration, both documented and undocumented, and human trafficking all raise theoretical and methodological questions and major policy issues, as does the role of migration in urban change.

2) The Religion and Globalisation Cluster (Research Leader: Professor Bryan Turner) explores the changing patterns of religious practice, belief and identity in recent times, particularly in Southeast Asia, China and South Asia. The title implies a particular interest in transnational and diasporic interactions, the engagement with modern technologies and values, and new global or 組localforms of identity.

3) The Cultural Studies Cluster (Research Leader: Professor Chua Beng Huat) consciously challenges disciplinary boundaries to address new topics, issues and concerns thrown up by the rapid globalization of contemporary cultures. ARI is interested in new understandings of the everyday life cultural practices of contemporary Asia, as in adaptations of older patterns in literature, and the performing and graphic arts, in rapidly changing contemporary conditions.

4) The Southeast Asia-China Interactions Cluster (Research Leader: Professor Anthony Reid) will welcome students in two project areas: The Cold War in Asia, relating particularly to relations between the two Chinas (CCP and KMT) and the parties, movements and governments of Southeast Asia; and issues of heritage recovery and archaeology in Aceh and Sumatra more generally.

ARI is a university-level institute formed in July 2001 as one of the strategic initiatives of the NUS. The mission of the Institute is to produce and promote world-class research on Asia. ARI engages the social sciences and humanities broadly defined, and encourages especially multidisciplinary studies. Now home to six research clusters with a strong team of resident and visiting scholars, ARI works closely with the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, School of Business, Faculty of Law, and School of Design and Environment in NUS.

c/o Ms Kristy Won
Asia Research Institute
National University of Singapore
469A Tower Block, Bukit Timah Road, #10-01, Singapore 259770
Fax: (65) 6779 1428

A marine ecologist is sought to form part of a team investigating the ecological interactions in a coral-reef system at Ningaloo Reef on the west coast of Australia. The research project is funded by the Western Australian Marine Science Institute with the aim of better understanding the interactions among a range of habitats in coastal systems, that will lead to more effective management in these systems, particularly through the implementation of marine protected areas. The study aims to use field experiments, biomarkers such as stable isotopes, and acoustic tracking of fishes to examine linkages among habitats, and interactions among different trophic levels. The project has significant funding and existing research infrastructure through collaborations with CSIRO.

If you are interested in the position, please visit the web site below for the advertisement, selection criteria and details of the application process.
http://www.hr. ecu.edu.au/ est/html/ jobs_ecu. cfm

Applications close on the 9th November 2007.
Yours sincerely,
Dr Glenn Hyndes
Senior Lecturer
School of Natural Sciences
Edith Cowan University
100 Joondalup Drive
Joondalup, Western Australia, 6027
Australia

Phone: +61 8 6304 5798
Fax: +61 8 6304 5070

http://www.sons. ecu.edu.au/ staff/ghyndes. php
http://cem.ecu. edu.au/coastal- marine/index. php

CRICOS Institutional Provider Code 00279B

This e-mail is confidential. SAP Research studies emerging IT trends and deploys new technologies in reallife environments to determine their potential business value for SAP. Research Centres are situated in several locations worldwide. Our Belfast (UK) Research Centre currently has PhD positions available in
the area of performance engineering for service-oriented architectures in collaboration with the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Ulster.

PhD Program:
The PhD program at SAP Research offers you a great chance to get industry experience in a real-life project, to work with top researchers, and to have the opportunity to develop your own research network. As SAP Research is a consortium member in various partly government funded projects, it forms an ideal platform for working on a doctoral thesis in conjunction with university partners.

As a PhD candidate you will be employed by SAP on a 3 year contract during which time it is expected that you complete your submission of a PhD thesis. Salary will be similar to university-based PhD studentships and tuition fees will be paid by SAP. You will be based primarily at the SAP Research Centre in Belfast, participating in a SAP research project that is closely aligned to your PhD topic. You will also participate in the standard activities of full-time PhD students at the University of Ulster including attending supervisor meetings, seminars and other training workshops.

Research Topic:
Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) is a new paradigm for constructing complex software systems and promises much greater flexibility for composing tailored enterprise applications that satisfy specific customer needs and business strategies. However, the non-functional behaviour of such systems, such as performance, is not yet well understood. Collaborative research is being carried out between SAP Research in Belfast and the University of Ulster to derive more comprehensive performance and resource models for Service Oriented Architectures within SAP. Our vision is that these models will evolve over time and enable better decision-support during any phase of a software solution's lifecycle. The major research themes and potential PhD topics in this context include:

* How to describe the performance and resource consumption
characteristics of services/components in a complex service-oriented
architecture.
* How to capture the performance and resource consumption
characteristics in an automated way and with minimal overhead on
development teams.
* How to derive benchmarking applications for SOA and describe
resource requirements in a hardware independent way.
* Identifies new methodologies and techniques for landscape
management within a virtualized adaptive IT infrastructure

Student Pre-requisites
Potential PhD students will be expected to have a First Class honours
degree, or equivalent, in Computer Science or a closely related
discipline with a broad appreciation of the research topics described
above. Education, research and designs are strongly oriented towards applicability. TU Delft develops technologies for future generations, focusing on sustainability, safety and economic vitality. At TU Delft we work in an environment where technical sciences and society converge. TU Delft comprises 8 faculties, unique laboratories, research institutes and schools.

Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences
The Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences provides leading international research and education in road and water engineering, traffic and transport, earth sciences and delta technology. Innovation and sustainability are central themes. The research focuses on issues relevant to society, and is closely intertwined with both education and the work of a wide spectrum of knowledge-based institutions. The faculty comprises 17 sections, divided into 5 departments: Design & Construction, Hydraulic Engineering, Transport & Planning, Water Management and Geosciences

Geotechnology Department
This department is subdivided into four sections: Geo-engineering, Applied Geophysics & Petrophysics, Applied Geology and Petroleum Engineering. The judicious exploration, exploitation and use of the Earth's resources and subsurface space are central themes in the research conducted at the Department of Geotechnology, focusing on the deep underground (> 1 km) as well as on the shallow subsurface (< 1 km). The Geotechnology Department is further subdivided into five sections: Geo-Engineering, Applied Geophysics & Petrophysics, Applied Geology, Petroleum Engineering and Resources Engineering. The Geo-Engineering section focuses on the low-lying countries and adjoining areas where the Dutch offshore, dredging and construction industries are involved. TU Delft's Geo-Engineering section offers an MSc in Geo-Engineering with five specialisations: engineering geology, geomechanics, geotechnical engineering, underground space technology and geo-enviromental engineering.
The Geotechnology Department has a vacancy for a PhD position in High-resolution 3D modelling of glacial tunnel valley infill.

Project and job description
This project addresses the long-standing problem of tunnel valley genesis and prediction of infill lithology by integrating a variety of subsurface datasets from key onshore and offshore regions in NW Europe calibrated by outcrop examination. The current low capability of predicting the nature and geometries of sedimentary bodies contained within tunnel valleys, makes effective subsurface modelling of these features a challenging task.
To increase our ability to characterise the internal architecture of these reservoirs, the PhD candidate will examine in detail the large high density Pleistocene subsurface dataset offered by the Geological Survey of Hamburg State, Germany. The study of high-density geotechnical borehole (> 2000 boreholes with mud-logs, e-logs and cores) coverage of a relatively confined area (approx. 750 km2), combined with available shallow seismic and georadar data, will enable us to reconstruct the sand body geometries deterministically and to define their spatial relationships (3D architecture) . This data will be used to populate a geometrical database which can then be used to guide static reservoir model building using commercial 3D software (e.g. Petrel, RMS). This part of the research project will ultimately provide guidelines on how to build static reservoir models of tunnel valleys, and a range of parameters to condition multiple subsurface realisations. The use of Petrel will
also allow testing the software and its capability (e.g. object-based vs. pixel-based modelling, use of trend maps, interpolation methods, etc.) and provide recommendations which will assist geoscientists in achieving realistic and effective subsurface models.
This research project is part of a large Joint Industry Project sponsored by six major oil companies worldwide. The TU Delft PhD position will be part of an integrated research programme carried out in coordination with another PhD research programme at Cambridge University, England and a Post-doc research programme at Aberdeen University, Scotland.
The successful appointee will work not only in the Netherlands but will also cooperate closely with colleagues in their own institutions to ensure full integration of the work with other aspects of the project. He or she will also be exposed to industry and several opportunities to deal with diverse and challenging senior professional geoscientists. The PhD candidate will be supervised jointly by Dr A. Moscariello, Prof. S. Kronenberg (Delft) and J. Ehlers (Geological Survey Hamburg).

Requirements
Those applying should have a good understanding of geology and familiarity with both exploration and reservoir geology investigation techniques (3D reservoir modelling). A good background in clastic sedimentology would also be preferable. Familiarity with web-browser design software and GIS systems will be welcomed as additional skills which will count towards the final candidate selection. Delft University of Technology is a bilingual organisation. A good command of English (written and oral) is essential, while good Dutch is also preferred.

Conditions of employment
The extent of the position is a maximum of 38 hours per week (1 FTE). The position has a temporary employment basis of 3 years. The estimated monthly PhD starting salary is based on scale 10, rising from 1,956 to 2,502 per month gross based on a full-time appointment and depending on experience). Benefits and other employment conditions are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.
The successful candidate will be employed by TU Delft for a fixed period of 3 years within which he or she is expected to write a dissertation leading to the Dr title (PhD thesis). Delft University of Technology strives to increase the number of women in higher academic positions; women are thus especially encouraged to apply.

Information and application
For further details on this position you are welcome to contact Prof. S.B. Kroonenberg, phone: +31 (0)15 - 27 86025, e-mail: S.B.Kroonenberg@ tudelft.nl; or Dr. A. Moscariello, phone: +31(0)15 - 27 87840, e-mail: A.Moscariello@ tudelft.nl.
To apply please send a detailed CV together with a letter of motivation, list of publications and two letters of reference before September 15 2007 to: Delft University of Technology, Faculty of Civil Engineering & Geosciences, attn. Mrs. N. van Benthem, PO Box 5048, 2600 GA Delft, The Netherlands; or apply online to
recruitment- citg@tudelft. nl.

When applying for this job always mention the vacancy number CiTG.07.18.
For more information about Delft University of Technology, please visit www.tudelft. nl.
