Overview of MIMS Ph. D. Program
The key educational component of the Global COE Program for the `Formation and Development of Mathematical Sciences Based on Modeling and Analysis' is the Ph.D. program provided by MIMS, an affiliated research institute of the Organization for the Strategic Coordination of Research and Intellectual Property, Meiji University.

This program consists of (1) "Cross Educational Programs" and (2) "Practical Programs".

Australian Postgraduate Award (Industry) in Sound Practice: Supporting Sustainable Careers in Orchestral Musicians through Occupational Health and Safety Initiatives
Two scholarships are being offered by the Discipline of Biomedical Science at the University of Sydney, the Australia Council for the Arts and eight major orchestras of Australia. This project will identify injury risk factors and predictors of injury, trial targeted interventions designed to better manage and prevent injury, and profile the psychological and physical health of professional musicians working within the eight premier state orchestras of Australia. The project aims to develop, implement and evaluate comprehensive multidisciplinary interventions to reduce the current unacceptably high rate of injury in this population and to support musicians in the management of psychological issues such as music performance anxiety and occupational stress. The project will provide an international benchmark for injury risk assessment and management within the orchestral workplace, assessment of physical and mental health of professional musicians and track injury trajectories, thereby facilitating the development of effective Occupational Health and Safety policies for professional Australian orchestral musicians at risk of a prematurely shortened career due to injury.

study starting in October 2008. Fully funded Economic and Social Research
Council *(ESRC) studentships* are available for *Sociology* (including
Criminology, Sociology of Sport) and *Social Work* (including Community and

scholarship within the area of Innovation Management starting 1 March 2008.

Innovation Management is a focus area for the department's research. In the
field of Innovation Management, the Department has close research
cooperations with the Copenhagen Business School (CBS) and the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology (MIT). These networks can be leveraged by the
applicant.

The applicant is expected to do his/her PhD work in the following topic

The PhD scholarship is partly financed by the EBST-project "Development of

A PhD student in Denmark must complete an individually planned PhD course

time (up to six months), with coverage of travel and accommodation expenses,

The following interdisciplinary areas or "clusters" are offering scholarships:
1) The Migration Cluster (Research Leader: Professor Brenda Yeoh) explores the issues arising from increased levels of human mobility in the region, both within and across national borders. Mobility of high-level professional and managerial personnel, labour migration, both documented and undocumented, and human trafficking all raise theoretical and methodological questions and major policy issues, as does the role of migration in urban change.

2) The Religion and Globalisation Cluster (Research Leader: Professor Bryan Turner) explores the changing patterns of religious practice, belief and identity in recent times, particularly in Southeast Asia, China and South Asia. The title implies a particular interest in transnational and diasporic interactions, the engagement with modern technologies and values, and new global or 組local�forms of identity.

3) The Cultural Studies Cluster (Research Leader: Professor Chua Beng Huat) consciously challenges disciplinary boundaries to address new topics, issues and concerns thrown up by the rapid globalization of contemporary cultures. ARI is interested in new understandings of the everyday life cultural practices of contemporary Asia, as in adaptations of older patterns in literature, and the performing and graphic arts, in rapidly changing contemporary conditions.

A 2.5-year Postdoctoral Fellow (Level A) position is available in the Centre for Ecosystem Management at Edith Cowan University (ECU) in Western Australia. A marine ecologist is sought to form part of a team investigating the ecological interactions in a coral-reef system at Ningaloo Reef on the west coast of Australia. The research project is funded by the Western Australian Marine Science Institute with the aim of better understanding the interactions among a range of habitats in coastal systems, that will lead to more effective management in these systems, particularly through the implementation of marine protected areas. The study aims to use field experiments, biomarkers such as stable isotopes, and acoustic tracking of fishes to examine linkages among habitats, and interactions among different trophic levels. The project has significant funding and existing research infrastructure through collaborations with CSIRO.

Collaborative research is being carried out between SAP Research in Belfast and the University of Ulster to derive more comprehensive performance and resource models for Service Oriented Architectures within SAP. Our vision is that these models will evolve over time and enable better decision-support during any phase of a software solution's lifecycle. The major research themes and potential PhD topics in this context include:

* How to describe the performance and resource consumption
characteristics of services/components in a complex service-oriented
architecture.
* How to capture the performance and resource consumption
characteristics in an automated way and with minimal overhead on
development teams.
* How to derive benchmarking applications for SOA and describe
resource requirements in a hardware independent way.
* Identifies new methodologies and techniques for landscape

Student Pre-requisites

The Geotechnology Department has a vacancy for a PhD position in High-resolution 3D modelling of glacial tunnel valley infill.

Project and job description
This project addresses the long-standing problem of tunnel valley genesis and prediction of infill lithology by integrating a variety of subsurface datasets from key onshore and offshore regions in NW Europe calibrated by outcrop examination. The current low capability of predicting the nature and geometries of sedimentary bodies contained within tunnel valleys, makes effective subsurface modelling of these features a challenging task.
To increase our ability to characterise the internal architecture of these reservoirs, the PhD candidate will examine in detail the large high density Pleistocene subsurface dataset offered by the Geological Survey of Hamburg State, Germany. The study of high-density geotechnical borehole (> 2000 boreholes with mud-logs, e-logs and cores) coverage of a relatively confined area (approx. 750 km2), combined with available shallow seismic and georadar data, will enable us to reconstruct the sand body geometries deterministically and to define their spatial relationships (3D architecture) . This data will be used to populate a geometrical database which can then be used to guide static reservoir model building using commercial 3D software (e.g. Petrel, RMS). This part of the research project will ultimately provide guidelines on how to build static reservoir models of tunnel valleys, and a range of parameters to condition multiple subsurface realisations. The use of Petrel will
also allow testing the software and its capability (e.g. object-based vs. pixel-based modelling, use of trend maps, interpolation methods, etc.) and provide recommendations which will assist geoscientists in achieving realistic and effective subsurface models.
This research project is part of a large Joint Industry Project sponsored by six major oil companies worldwide. The TU Delft PhD position will be part of an integrated research programme carried out in coordination with another PhD research programme at Cambridge University, England and a Post-doc research programme at Aberdeen University, Scotland.
The successful appointee will work not only in the Netherlands but will also cooperate closely with colleagues in their own institutions to ensure full integration of the work with other aspects of the project. He or she will also be exposed to industry and several opportunities to deal with diverse and challenging senior professional geoscientists. The PhD candidate will be supervised jointly by Dr A. Moscariello, Prof. S. Kronenberg (Delft) and J. Ehlers (Geological Survey Hamburg).

Requirements
Those applying should have a good understanding of geology and familiarity with both exploration and reservoir geology investigation techniques (3D reservoir modelling). A good background in clastic sedimentology would also be preferable. Familiarity with web-browser design software and GIS systems will be welcomed as additional skills which will count towards the final candidate selection. Delft University of Technology is a bilingual organisation. A good command of English (written and oral) is essential, while good Dutch is also preferred.

Conditions of employment
The extent of the position is a maximum of 38 hours per week (1 FTE). The position has a temporary employment basis of 3 years. The estimated monthly PhD starting salary is based on scale 10, rising from � 1,956 to � 2,502 per month gross based on a full-time appointment and depending on experience). Benefits and other employment conditions are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.

To be awarded a scholarship, one must be enrolled as a PhD student.
Enrolment is dependent on the acceptance of an application, including a short project description prepared in co-operation with the Department. The description of the research project should contain a presentation of the intended focus problems, including the theory and methodology expected to be used.

A PhD scholarship runs for a period of 3 years and is only awarded to applicants with a Master's degree.
