Scholarships Description: The PhD Research Training Group, which was established in 2006, is devoted to the interdisciplinary analysis of processes of globalization, with a focus on those places, moments and arenas in which new spatializations of social action are negotiated from the early 19th century to the present. The following disciplines are participating in the programme: African studies, cultural sociology, cultural studies of East- Central Europe, global studies, history, human geography, Japanese studies, Oriental studies, political science and economics.The postdoctoral positions fall under the first two core areas. Postdocs are expected to dedicate their work equally to their own empirical research and theoretical conclusions as well as to the integration of the research results coming from the dissertations. Scholarships Description: In a number of natural situations, turbulent buoyant plumes rise through stratified fluids and form laterally spreading neutral clouds: these include volcanic eruption columns in the atmosphere and hydrothermal plumes in the deep ocean. One of the key challenges in modelling such flows concerns the rate of sedimentation of any ash particles or other precipitate from the flow, and the impact of this on the subsequent dynamics of the flow, the ensuing sedimentation from the flow, and the dispersion of the particles through convective mixing with the ambient fluid. This project, supervised by Prof Andy Woods will investigate some of these issues through a combination of experimental and theoretical modelling. For more details contact Prof Andy Woods.
The BP Institute for Multiphase Flow was established in 2000 by a generous endowment from BP, which has funded faculty positions, support staff and the Institute Building, in perpetuity. Scholarship Description: The Governing Body of St Anne’s College invites applications for the Global Justice Research Fellowship tenable from 1 October 2011. Applications will be considered from graduates or equivalent, women or men, in their second or subsequent year of doctoral research. Candidates registered for doctorates at other universities are eligible. Those candidates who have not completed their doctorate or equivalent, should provide evidence that they are likely to be in a position to submit their thesis within the first year of the Fellowship. The Research Fellow will have completed, or be close to completing, a PhD in Law, Politics, International Relations, Development Studies, Area Studies or another relevant discipline. The Fellow will have expertise in the broad field of transitional justice, which concerns the processes and institutions employed by societies in transition following large-scale human rights violations such as mass conflict and/or repressive rule.
