Three Cute Backpacks for 2013 Middle School Girls

2013-07-22T14:00:00.001-07:00

Looking for something distinct from what you see in the stores? These are three really cute motifs from a longtime fave in the manufacture of backpacks and bookbags for kids of all ages. I love these for the middle school setting because of multiple compartments and fun design. Organization is essential from middle school onward in education, and this enables your daughter to establish some basic guidelines for keeping up. Calculators and electronics can be separated from books, important for limiting damage potential. Keeping pencils and pens in their own space is another ideal strategy so that there aren't stray marks, leaks of blue ink and crumbled erasers all over books. Hydration bottles on the outside of the bag, please...who wants to buy a water-damaged science book, after all? Invest in a pencil box and tech cases for added protection. These colors are consistent with the energetic nature of the tween girls. I've watched time after time as middle schoolers gravitate toward wild color combinations and motifs, and I think that Jansport has captured the spirit of the pre-teen age group perfectly with these particular designs. You'll find many more options as you check out the pages for these, so keep your mind open. However, I know that I would have loved these even during my middle school years.

Blue Messenger Bag Styles in 2013

2013-07-20T21:26:00.001-07:00

My preference for the messenger bag was established a year ago as I tried to manage many bags at a college orientation for my daughter. Believe me, the backpack was a serious problem, constantly slipping as I walked. Whether you are looking for a good bag for personal use or for a daughter, granddaughter, niece or friend, think about sparing that person's shoulders by providing a crossbody school tote! Really, I would have loved this design when I was in public school. As you search, keep in mind that messenger bag design is more compatible with book organization and paper and notebook management. It's shaped much like a file, and books can fit more like they would in a file. There's room in many designs to separate folders and papers from the books. Contrast that with the stuff and shove mentality that goes with a backpack. Kids shove all kinds of things in with their books, and there's never an end to crumbled papers and broken pencils. Keep this in sight as you look for the right bookbag for a girl. Check out the options shown below. You'll find many more options as you explore, many in fun motifs or simple shades of blue for enhancing your student's book carrying needs.

Tough Laptop Backpacks for Girls

Tough Laptop Backpack for College or High School Girls

If you are looking for reliable transport for your high school or college daughter's books and laptop, this is a great option. The design is attractive, created in the popular pink against a dark background. It's not too flashy, mature enough for the college scene. At the same time, it's got enough of a hint of fun to be cheerful and fashionable.

My daughter completed her first year of college with some challenges as she tried to use an oversized handbag to manage her laptop. It didn't work well, and since she likes to spend time at the campus library studying, she is investing in a more durable laptop bag. She wants the backpack for ease of transport.

The brand, iSafe, has lots of backpack and messenger bags for girls or boy. Designs are attractive and fashionable without overdoing the graphics. That's a good thing for upper level students as they transition into advanced studies. The backpack shown above, for example, could well carry a student through both high school and college years. You'll find similar backpacks with different color emphasis as you browse. Consider the messenger bag option as a durable alternative as well.

One Direction Messenger Bags

One Direction Messenger Bags for Tweens

The event of the Olympics that most impressed my tween daughter was the appearance of One Direction. I didn't realize that the song they played was so popular, but I guess I should have realized when the kids played it over and over a zillion times. It's funny how bands have an effect on tweens and younger girls...even older girls sometimes. Two decades ago, it was the New Kids on the Block. A few short years ago it was the Jonas Brothers. Now, One Direction is quite the thing. Finding One Direction messenger bags makes perfect sense if your upper elementary school or tween daughter are fans. I love messenger bags as an alternative to backpacks.

Find Various options and images.

I think that for older girls in elementary and middle school they are easier to carry and easier to organize. Academic success can be tied in part to how well your child keeps her school bag organized. Lost homework, forgotten books and all sorts of other attention and management issues can affect grades. The messenger bag for your middle school daughter or upper elementary student isn't going to save the day all on its own, but you can improve your child's opportunity to succeed by providing good tools and helping her with appropriate management techniques.

Vertical Messenger Bags

Vertical Messenger Bags for Girls

Most vertical messenger bags for girls are pretty and chic, but they don't work well as book bags for girls. They are generally too small to accomodate many textbooks, and wouldn't serve the organizational needs well at all. However, a vertical messenger bag can be an excellent accessory for your middle school daughter. Functioning more like a purse, the vertical messenger is great for storing school supplies, calculators, money and more. The crossbody strap makes it easier for her to hold onto her purse, an important feat at this level given the absentmindedness of many tweens. You'll find cute choices available through the image link provided.

There are many choices in messenger bags, some emphasizing color and some motif. The most important thing is good construction. This choice works as a laptop tote or school bag, equally suitable for the college co-ed and the middle school student. In all cases, it's important that organization of the contents be easy and that carrying be comfortable. The North Face Base Camp Messenger Bag Large

My Minds Eye Kit for Making Your Own Messenger Bag for School

If you have a daughter that likes to sew, or if you are sew inclined yourself, this kit from My Mind's Eye is fresh and colorful in bright yellow plaid. My tween and teen daughters have been on a mission to create their own school totes this spring, with tremendous results. It can be challenging, though, to find easy to follow directions and well assembled patterns. A kit like this makes for a fantastic summer project. If you need a sewing machine recommendation, my daughters do really well with a basic Brother, as this is what is used in the 4H programs here. They do really well, in fact!

Back to College Messenger Bags

2012-04-20T07:03:00.000-07:00

Jansport is one of the most trusted names
in College school bags. Jansport messengers are
great for toting a laptop or other collegiate supplies.

With summer approaching, most kids' minds aren't on school. Not unless they are graduating seniors in high school. I have one, and her head is firmly set on summer preparation for going away to college. There are a million details confronting us at every step. Planning for housing on campus, tracking down the right tech equipment and dorm appliances are among the immediate thoughts. Of course, I remember how useful my backpack was in my college years, and I would have loved a messenger bag. Oversized totes were too much, but the messenger style is crossbody carry, which is a comfortable choice for trekking way across campus. She's attending my alma mater, and the expansion is the last few decades makes the trek even greater.

One of my planning strategies for getting her stuff moved is using the mail. This can be a little tricky if your child lives on campus. A PO box is great for mailing packages, but you need it set up in advance if you are going to ship things before she gets there. Unfortunately, PO boxes aren't good for accepting UPS deliveries. Find out if your child's dorm accepts UPS deliveries on behalf of students. Check into alternatives to a traditional post office for mail and package delivery. A UPS store, for example, often has PO boxes for rent, and they will serve as a physical location for package delivery. A lot to think through? You bet!

Not only will this approach work nicely for litte stuff like school bags for college students, but also it will allow you to get that mini fridge ordered and delivered in plenty of time. Are you going to a summer orientation? That's the best time to hash it all out. Next best, call your residential life office and get some ideas about shipping options.

School Lunches with Ease: Getting Ready For The Rush

2012-03-28T15:11:00.000-07:00

Brown Bag It or Lunch Box It

Sometimes, the return to school is so crazy and overwhelming, that the easiest solution for all is to have the kids just buy lunch. However, this isn't the most frugal approach, and sometimes, you just wonder what the contents of those meals really are. The energy it often takes to make lunch in the morning in wearing, even more if the household has several members requiring lunches, or if Mom works outside of the home.
Brown bagging it, or carrying a lunch box, does not need to be all that tiresome. With a little planning, parents can find approaches that will save time and money in the long run. Furthermore, the kids can be involved in the process. Get them on that bandwagon by helping them to understand how taking their lunches saves money, and help them to find lunchbox items that they like, and which will be nutritious.

Hello Kitty School Lunch Bag for Girls

The basic contents....

The basics of a lunch from home are usually quite simple: a drink, a sandwich, and a snack. Drinks are fairly simple, so lets begin there. Boxed or bagged fruit juice drinks are usually economical. Capri Sun drinks run about $2 in our local WalMart, for a package of 10, working out to 20 cents each. Other juices may be more costly. However, with a thermos, you can send a serving of milk or juice from a jug. Avoid sodas, or overly sugary drinks. Even bottled water is a reasonable choice.

As for a sandwich, there are some basic options in school lunches: peanut butter/jelly, tuna, cheese slices, cold cuts, chicken salad, egg salad...just not all at once, please! Some alternatives? Vegetables...a tomato/lettuce sandwich is delicious...or make it a BLT with some pre-packaged, pre-cooked turkey bacon pieces. Cucumbers make great sandwich fillers, as well. Wrap any of the above fillers in a tortilla, for a switch. Or, send burritos, in place of sandwiches. Pita pockets containing almost any of these would work. Make it a math problem for your child, to figure out how many different combinations of outer and inner sandwich type ingredients there are, you may discover together that there are no excuses for lunch time to be boring!

Do not...I repeat, Do not forget snacks!

For younger children, especially, this is the highlight of the lunch! It needn't be fancy. But, the absence of a snack is certain to disappoint. Fruit...veggie sticks with ranch or peanut butter....chips, cookies, fruit leather, applesauce, muffins or cupcakes...the list is extensive, and the options available, endless. I like to mix it up a bit, making fruit a mainstay of lunch time, but also allowing for the treats that may not have as much nutritional value, but definitely motivate. String cheese is a great idea for a protein type item, and boiled eggs go over well with my family, as well. Make sure you pack an ice pack into the lunch box, so that such foods don't spoil.
Again, challenge your child with some mathematical thought, and have him figure out how many different lunches you can make with the selections at hand. You may have more lunches than school days in the year!

The bag depicted above is more appropriate, perhaps, for a girl, but there are many unisex lunch packs in the Angry Birds theme. The popularity of the fun Angry Birds apps has permeated all age ranges, and I love it as much as my kids do. I see all ages playing from phones and iPods in waiting rooms around my community, and the gear continues to be expanded as a result. You'll find many more Angry Birds lunch packs here, and the image above links to the design shown. Watch later in the summer for the release of Mattel AppTivity toys in the Angry Birds theme, as well.
