Individuals with a felony conviction often face many challenges in finding new careers.

To offset this complication, returning to school is typically the most viable option.  If you are having a problem with finding a job, then going to college or technical school is a great way to boost your career options.  But how will you pay for it?  If you are looking for financial aid for school, one of the greatest ways you can get the funding is through a Pell grant.  While there is a common misconception about grants for school and the ability of felons to acquire them, the fact is that your felony conviction will not prevent you from obtaining a Pell grant especially if you are unemployed.  While there are some limitations for grants, if you have a felony drug charge, most students can acquire a Pell grant if they are completely off work and desire to attend school.  To determine if you qualify for a Pell grant, be sure to complete a FAFSA form online and turn it in with your appropriate tax information.

Are you a convicted felon struggling to find a job?  Do you want to further your education in an area of expertise?  If so, you are on the right track.

For many people with felony convictions, the complications with finding work often comes as a result of little to no background that is competitive against those people who have a clear background.  The key to finding work lies in your ability to make yourself unique and the “better” applicant for the job.

So, how do felons do this?  For many convicted felons, this requires that you return to school and get an education in a degree that is closely associated with the type of work you want to pursue.  I’m often asked if felons can go to college and the answer to this is, yes, you can.  While some private colleges may limit your opportunities, the majority of public colleges will accept you into their programs.

So, why don’t felons go to college?  Many convicted felons simply do not attend college because they are struggling with the financial burden of attending.  College for felons doesn’t cost any more or less than other college student but oftentimes felons are concerned they will not qualify for grants or other financial aid.  While it is true that some government financial aid programs are limited to those with a fraud or drug conviction, there are ways to get around this.  To find grants for convicted felons to attend college, you have to first fill out your FASFA form online. Within the FASFA form, you will be asked about your criminal background but do not let this deter you from completing the form.  Even if you don’t qualify for grants or programs through the government, you may still qualify for private funding for school but you’ll never know what you can get if you don’t fill out the FASFA form first.  So, get busy, fill out the forms and remember that colleges do accept felons and this is the best way you can ensure that you are on your way to finding a job with little to no resistance.

Are you a convicted felon looking for scholarships for school or education grants for felons?  If so, you may want to consider how your minority status will give you unique opportunities to secure a scholarship.  Even if you aren’t an “A” student, there are plenty of opportunities for securing scholarships without regard to your status as a first-time student or a returning student to school.

Most students with felony convictions make the mistake in believing they are not eligible for grants or scholarships for school.  When looking for scholarships, we also often make the mistake in believing that we do not quality for funding because we did not perform well in prior college courses or in high school.  When looking for scholarships, you have to think outside the box.  For example, if you are a person who enjoys art, there are many art scholarships you can tap into without even majoring in art.   Typically, these scholarships only require that you take an art class or that you pursue a trade and have trade school grants as well.

To find unique scholarship opportunities for minorities, always look at the financial aid office in the school you plan to attend.  In addition, reach out to local organizations that provide services based on your interests.  For example, if you have a passion for art, contact local art schools as many of them will provide a small scholarship to help with your school expenses.  Even places that offer international horticulture jobs will offer scholarships and, in most cases, you only need to take a gardening or landscaping class as part of your school curriculum.

Hobbyist groups, community service organizations, local businesses, unions, minority groups and fraternal organizations also offer scholarships that you may be able to take advantage of as well. It is important to really look around and weigh your options, because you never know where you are going to find opportunities for scholarships until they appear.  As a convicted felon, no matter what your plans may be for school in the long term, always consider options for finding scholarships where your passions are and do not limit your search only to the scholarships based upon grades.

As 2011 comes to a close, many individuals with felony convictions are looking for ways to improve their quality of life into the new year.  If you are considering the opportunity to return to school, it is vitally important that you know what financial aid options are going to be made available to you and what you can do to ensure you get the maximum financial support.  When attending college financial aid could mean the difference between your success and your ability to graduate – always consider every option including grants, scholarships and, when appropriate, loans for school.

When starting your quest to secure financial aid for school, be sure to complete your FASFA online as this will be necessary no matter what type of financial aid you are applying for.  With the FASFA completion, your school can determine your financial need and then, in turn, provide you with the tips and resources for securing not only the minority scholarships but also the minority grants.  Even if you are attending grad school, minority scholarships should be considered every step along the way – no matter what the amount of the award may be.

We were recently asked this question by a convicted felon who was concerned about his ability to secure a grant for school.  The answer to this question, about education grants for felons, will vary depending on who or what company is awarding the grant for education.

If you have a felony conviction, and if you desire to return to school, there are some limitations to securing financial aid for school.  For example, felons who have a drug conviction typically do not qualify for federal grants however they can often qualify for private grants.  In many cases, private grants awarded are not based on anything other than your financial need and, perhaps, your grade point average from any prior schooling you may have.  If, however, the company requires a background check of some type, it will often be a consumer fair credit report that is regulated under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, FCRA.

Federal law, under the FCRA, limits what a reporting agency can give to any organization, including grant awarding companies and to employers.  In most situations, the information reported is limited to going back no further than seven (7) years.  But states, in many cases, have modified this law to apply certain limitations.  For example, in New York, the limitation on using the Fair Credit Reporting Act, FCRA. is only applicable for 7 years and only if you are looking for a job, or award, that is more than $25,000 annually.  If your grant is less than that, the grant awarding company can’t use this information.

So, when applying for grants, if you come across some that require a background check, do not fret.  In many cases, these are done by outside agencies and if your felony is more than 7 years old, you should have very little to worry about.  Never let your felony hold you back from getting an education.   Consider all options for financial aid – both private and public scholarships, grants, and even loans.

School grants for felons come through a number of creative resources.   While many convicted felons are pursuing their education grants through traditional methods – using Pell grants for felons and other federal government programs – there are many school grants you can get through your local city.   If you, or someone you know, works for the local city government, you can often tap into a tuition reimbursement program that works much like a grant for school.   With tuition reimbursement, city employees (and often their spouses) can obtain tuition repayment when they major in school programs that are related to some aspect of the city services.  While you do have to pay for your schooling upfront, the city will often repay you for the tuition, fees, and books expenses if you obtain, at least, a grade of  “C” in each class.   To get the city grants for education, simply contact the Human Resources for the city you, or your spouse, works in and inquire about the tuition reimbursement, military spouse scholarships, or grants programs.
