Harmony Grill Specials 10/3 - 10/9

It's that time again- time to let you guys know what's cookin' in the ol' Harmony Grill! Having tasted all of the specials this week, we can tell you for certain that you cannot go wrong ordering off of the chalkboard this week- the Crab Cake Panini and Tuscan Spare Ribs (that mustard sauce- omigosh) are worth their respective weights in gold (come by Wednesday for the added bonus of a half-priced Mac-n-Cheese to share) and the Brunch specials are split right down the middle between sweet (Banana Bread French Toast, holey moley!) and savory, with a Country-Fried Chicken-n-Biscuits dish that'll melt your heart. Hey, guys- just wanted to give those of you who wanted but were unable to acquire tickets to our August 8th Schubas 20 Event / Lollapalooza Aftershow / Rock For Kids benefit with Andrew Bird a heads-up: Rock For Kids has an eBay auction going for a pair of tickets. The auction goes until the 31st, so get your bid on for a good show and a great cause.

In Memoriam: Thax Douglas Internet Death Hoax (2009-2009)

You got us good, Internet!

It all started (for us, anyway) with a phone call to the Schubas office in the early afternoon of July 17th- Thax Douglas was dead. A quick bit of web research turned up reports all over the internet of a message from Thax's dad posted to his Facebook page. Next, we exchanged a few Thax Douglas stories, drew up a memorial blog post, the whole shabang. Then, Decider Chicago started up their "Journalism" machine, rooting out actual comments from people who knew what they were talking about, local government agencies, etc.- like a real news-gathering organization or something. Thanks for the memories, Internet Hoax, and thanks to Decider Chicago for bringing Thax back and putting our minds at ease. Thanks, too, to Thax- for all the things we missed dearly those terrifying 20 minutes in July of 2009.

Thax Douglas's father has posted the following to Thax's Facebook page:

"This is Thax's Dad. Thax passed away this morning at about 10am. I know he loved the many friends he had in Chicago and I ask that you pray for him this evening."

Thax will be sorely missed by venues throughout Chicago and Schubas where, whether reading before and between bands or just hanging out and enjoying a show, his presence was felt strongly and often. Here's to Thax.

Schubas Employee Laura Coover Wins Jeff Award!

Good news today, SchubaPals! If this building had buttons, they'd surely be a-burstin', as our own Laura Coover (who had previously been honored by inclusion on The Chicago Tribune's 2008 shortlist of young, up-and-coming stage actors in Chicago) has been nominated for and WON a prestigious 2009 Jeff Award! The Jeff Awards have celebrated excellence in Chicago Theatre since 1968, which means they know what the heck they're talking about when they hand these puppies out. She won in the category "Actress in a Principal Role - Play" for her work as Sandy in the Eclipse Theatre Company's production of Rebecca Gilman's "Blue Surge". In his review of the play, Chris Jones (Theatre Critic for The Chicago Tribune) had this to say about Laura's award-winning performance: "In the central role of Sandy, high school graduate turned flexible massage therapist, Laura Coover has all the right qualities, including a smartly sardonic style, a vulnerable core and bright eyes that suggest her character wants, and is capable of, so much more than performing sexual favors for $40." Hoo Boy!

Needless to say, all of us at Schubas are totally excited and wholly proud of Laura. Congratulations are in order, and here they are: Congratulations, Laura Coover! Here's to countless more broken legs.

Our Latest Project...err... a Projector!

Hey guys, just wanted to give you a gander at our new HD projector! It's in the music room, and had its tires kicked over the weekend during a private Super Bowl party. Visions of pSyChEdEliC backdrops, Guitar Hero, Rock Band, Wii Sports and the like dance around our heads, but let us know in the comments (or @schubas on Twitter) any ideas you have for other uses that would capitalize on our new hardware.
