Earlier this week I asked my private 90 Minds Consulting Group which is comprised of 130 experienced Sage partners from across North America whether they’d recommend Sage 100 ERP v4.5 or v2013 for a customer upgrade.

Here’s my exact question about whether it’s better to upgrade to Sage 100 ERP v4.5 or Sage 100 ERP 2013?:

Ok to go with Sage 100 ERP 2013 from v4.3 or are you still recommending 4.5?

I’m very hesitant to put a customer on a version (4.5) that’s already one level back when the upgrade fee is fairly costly to begin with.

If I hop to 4.5 then I will presumably still have a decent hop to 2013 (given the credit card upload which this customer is using).

What say everyone – 4.5 or is 2013 ready?

Notes:

1. Credit Card Upload is a reference to Sage 100 ERP 2013 requiring integrated credit card users to move to Sage Payments (if they are not already on the platform). During the upgrade all payment data is uploaded to the Sage Vault which can be time consuming depending upon the volume.

2. This information is general in nature and may not be applicable to your company. Please consult with your Sage Business Partner.

3. The responses are unfiltered and come from experienced Sage 100 consultants with a varying degree of experience with the Sage 100 ERP 2013 upgrade. Complexity of upgrades vary from company to company and it’s impossible to list every complicating factor from an upgrade which might have tainted one person’s opinion.

Is It “Safe” To Upgrade To Sage 100 ERP 2013?

(A compilation of feedback received from 90 Minds members)

I’m installing 2013 whenever I can. Because if not now, when? Before you know it 2014 will be released and your client will again be 2 versions behind.

We are going to 2013 as a rule, unless they have a third party that is not yet ready, such as JobOps. JobOps 2013 is out some time in June, so then we’ll recommend 2013 for most.

The real $64,000 question that the customer asks “will there be any bugs if we go 2013 v 4.5? ” … talk about setting yourself up to be blamed for making the decision if there are any v2013 issues that arise…….

Answer: Yes, but that is true with any software, no matter how mature. However, we will make sure all patches are installed on a timely manner, as needed, and we’ll help you as new bugs are discovered to mitigate any problems that arise. That is our job. However, we are not the publishers of the software and we can not, and do not, make any guarantees regarding the software.

We are starting to roll it out for smaller clients. For a 20 user wholesale distribution customer I would still be nervous, but if they were anxious to upgrade “now” I would probably go with it and do as much testing as possible. Pretty sorry state of affairs when the software has been out for 6+ months and people have little confidence.

In the good old days… we would wait until the first fix collection came out. I am not as close as I used to be, but it seems 2013 is having some underlying technical issues in our hosted environment which makes me wonder…

We also are running into situations where the Extended Solutions people still rely upon are taking time to be upgraded and sadly you must still request them to be upgrade (not really sure what the maintenance covers when you have to call and make a special request to get it upgraded and even then it’s two months)…..

My biggest issues are all Crystal and workstation related.

I would go for it - we have a client, 100 advanced, Distribution BOM, a lot of custom fields/scripting, things have been running well. My feeling is that it’s ready, and it’s a separate install, so you have the opportunity to do some good testing prior to a final migration.

I say 4.5, I had one upgrade from 371 to 5.0 (Sage 100 ERP 2013) everything went wonderfully with exception to Printing and Sage Exchange communication errors that were invalid and seemed to be locking issues. Spent several weeks dealing with it , Sage Support was involved but got the typical answer of Reinstalling the applications. I did not reinstall. However after …

Windows 8 machine on 10.1.7 could not create any PDF.

Beginning with Sage 100 ERP 2013 the ability to use PC Charge from Verifone as a way to integrate your credit card merchant account of choice to your Sage 100 ERP has been discontinued. Instead Sage now offers integration to their own Sage Payment Services as the sole available option for integrated credit and other payment processing.

This has caused customers and partners to wonder whether third party options which re-enable credit card integrations to providers other than Sage Payments might be forthcoming.

At least one provider of such a solution had announced plans to upgrade their integration to work with Sage 100 ERP 2013.

Sage last night clarified their position on third party credit card integrations to Sage 100 ERP. In short they will not be allowed.

Starting with Sage 100 ERP Sage removed all credit card information from Sage 100 ERP and now stores it in the Sage Vault. From this location Sage can process integrated credit card transactions and does not need to subject each release of their Sage 100 ERP (including product updates) to an expensive PCI audit or review.

If you are using a credit card merchant other than Sage Payments and you wish to have integrated credit card processing in Sage 100 ERP 2013 then you will need to contact Sage Payments to obtain a merchant account through them.

ALERT!

Automatic Settlement Failure: Tuesday, April 23, 2013-Action Recommended

On Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at approximately 11:00 pm EDT, Sage Payments identified a potential issue with automatic settlement. You may notice that your automatic settlement did not run on Tuesday, April 23, 2013 and you may still have transactions from April 22 and April 23 in your open batch. To prevent any delay in your funding, we recommend that you settle your batch manually.

This apparently is the result of a problem with the automatic batch settlement process at Sage Payments / SPS and it is affecting customers that are using the Virtual Terminal for processing.

The work around is for them to manually settle the batches.

Auto-Batch Issue Alert!

Note: This message was reportedly received by at least one customer on April 24, 2013. By the time you read this the situation may be resolved but we’ve posted this here just

Unless you live in one of five states that don’t collect sales tax (for now), chances are sales tax is something you deal with regularly as a consumer. And while there are many intricacies businesses face when collecting sales tax (what rate to charge, when & where to file, etc.), most of us understand the concept in general.

Unlike sales tax, very few of us understand use tax regulations, let alone comply with them. Put simply, use tax (aka consumer use tax) is a sales tax that is collected and remitted by the buyer rather than the seller.

It is estimated that in the 45 states that have sales tax, and therefore also have use tax, only 1.6% of taxpayers actually pay it. While state governments don’t have the bandwidth to hunt down every penny individual consumers didn’t pay on tax-free (but not tax-exempt) online purchases, auditors are not shy about digging into purchase records to find use tax violations when auditing businesses.

There are a variety of scenarios that create use tax liability, and each of these situations, if not handled properly, can expose your organization to audit risk. Attend this webinar to learn how you can reduce your exposure by accurately self-assessing use tax.

Sage have just issued a program patch for versions 4.3+ of Sage 100 ERP which corrects an issue some users have encountered trying to print the 2013 IRS form 941.

The two report files which are updated:

PR941A.RPT
PRSCHB.RPT
