It’s Schwab Volunteer Week, and we’ve set a record with 3,200 Schwabbies volunteering in 82 cities to support nearly 160 nonprofit organizations. A few talented employees volunteered in a unique way, serving as official photographers for various projects. Here are just a few of our favorite photos from projects early in the week – and we still have more projects to go!

So how do you package the 40-year history of an iconic company like Schwab into a 30-by-40-foot exhibit?

That was the question facing a handful of my colleagues and me late last year as we began work on the history exhibit that is now traveling to our major Schwab locations.

At first glance, this top-floor space looks like a warehouse store. The ceiling is tall enough to accommodate a stack of 12-foot ladders. Rakes, hoes and shovels hang five-deep against the right wall. Gray plastic bins are piled high, topped with industrial-sized boxes of trash bags. And on the shelves beyond, I spy everything from spray-bottle cleaners to hard hats and hammers.

Today we're celebrating the launch of Schwab Volunteer Week -- an annual event when more than 3,000 employees fan out across the country and share their time and expertise to support more than 150 local nonprofit organizations.

It took 11 shovels to make it official, but a new Schwab campus is under way in Lone Tree, Colorado – the intended new work home for about 2,000 of our Denver-area employees.

Last week’s groundbreaking is just the latest sign of Schwab’s commitment to Colorado.

We’re in birthday mode here at Schwab, having just hit the milestone of 40 years in business. Like any good party, we’re making it last as long as possible with a host of activities planned over the next few months, including a pretty incredible interactive history exhibit that will be visiting nine of our major locations in the coming weeks. More details and photos to come in an upcoming blog post!

As a Baby Boomer, my idea of the American dream was to have it all. To raise smart and successful kids. To work hard at a rewarding career. To save and invest for a secure retirement. And, along the way, to give back to the community.

If you think that dream isn’t reality, meet Eileen Birge, who believes “the world should be a better place because we were here.”

When I ask three different people to describe Jeff Feld, they all say: “He’s a Chicago guy.”

I’m not sure what that means. As a new Schwab employee, I’ve had the opportunity to ask a lot of people here what makes Schwab so great. The overwhelming response is “the people” – people who demonstrate extraordinary commitment to doing right by Schwab clients along with a genuine desire to do good in their communities. Now that I’ve been on the job for several weeks, I’m starting to see what they mean. And, apparently, so do others.
