In the not too distant future, a distortion in Earth’s atmosphere finds Tokyo surrounded by the mysterious Hell’s gate, while South America plays home to a similar Heaven’s gate. From these formations come puzzling events such as the disappearance of the stars as well as the birth of the contractors, humans endowed with unique powers. In exchange for their powers, contractors must separate themselves from all emotional reasoning and pay a specific price.

BK201, aka Hei, is arguably the most infamous of this new breed, wielding electro kinesis in his work for a suspicious group known as the Syndicate, eliminating both humans and contractors alike. Unlike other contractors, BK201’s power requires no cost nor was he forced to forsake his emotions. While his loyalty to the group appears to be absolute, his true motives are a secret to all, as he uses their influence to search for his sister.

Darker than Black is an arc-based series from Studio Bones, comprised of many multi-part episodes that range in quality, focusing on the various assignments given to Hei and his cohorts. Assisted by a group of fellow syndicate members Mao, a contractor capable of transferring his mind into other animals, Yin, a doll with empathic abilities, and Huang, an untrusting human, Hei carries out every mission with deadly accuracy while fending off an intuitive detective, determined to uncover the secrets behind the syndicate.

Created by Tensai Okamura with animation provided by Studio Bones, and featuring music from famed composer Yoko Kanno, Darker than Black certainly would appear to have a lot going for it. The series was awarded Best Original Anime of the Year by GOGO Magazine before being snatched up for US distribution by Funimation.

The series is action centric as Hei and other contractors are pitted against one another, giving way to beautifully animated scenes in which one power clashes with another. There is a good deal of violence to be had but not enough to be considered gory or extreme. Studio Bones is known for their superb animation, making full use of it here, using visually arresting techniques to spotlight the extensive use of the contractor’s powers. The characters themselves sport more slick and refined designs while the Tokyo landscape is given a more naturalistic atmosphere.

Unfortunately, Darker than Black does suffer from its fair share of flaws, the most notable of which is the varying degree in quality of episodes from arc to arc. While none ever reach the level of mediocrity, there are more than a few that could have used more attention to detail. Also of issue is the nonexistent ending, in which none of the mysteries behind the gate or the contractors is explained, leaving the possibility for a second season, which only recently aired in Japan.

This release sports a healthy dose of bonus features, with cast and crew commentaries on select episodes as well as production artwork and even cast auditions. There is of course the usual slate of textless songs to be had. It goes without saying, the extras presented here are of much higher variety than most anime releases and are greatly appreciated.

All in all, grievances aside, Darker than Black is still an exceptional series. The intoxicating action sequences combined with the over arching mysteries running rampant make for an engaging viewing experience that is not to be missed. While the climax is not nearly as great as it should have been, it presents a satisfying end to Hei’s search for his sister, wrapping the main plot point of the first season. Consider this release highly recommended.

Consisting of 24 episodes adapted from a series of light novels by Makoto Sanda, Rental Magica spins together just about every type of magic one can think of, as it follows the adventures of Astral, a company of magic users who employ their skills to service others. Itsuki Iba is a high school student who finds himself roped into accepting the position as president of the company despite having virtually no experience in the use of magic.

Unlike other series of this sort, the characters have no reason to hide their abilities as magic is a commonly accepted concept. Throughout the set, Itsuki and his employees confront various threats, as he tries to prove himself a competent boss. Though several others feel he lacks the credentials to do an efficient job, he is given a temporary trial period to build his experience and demonstrate his aptitude.

Competing with Astral for assignments is the much more refined, Goetia Company. Though they are considered rivals, Goetia’s heir, Adelecia continually involves herself in Astral’s matters due to her growing infatuation with Itsuki. Though the company doesn’t play a huge part in part 1, Adelecia does, often showing up to offer aid to Itsuki, though not without a fair share of gloating.

Other members of Astral include the witch Honami, Adelecia’s rival as well as Itsuki’s childhood friend, Nekoyashiki, a spiritualist with an obsession pertaining to cats, and Mikan, the company’s youngest member. Each one views their coworkers as an extended family, adding a certain charm to the series. Later on, they gain another member in the form of Manami, a ghost with powers of her own. Over the course of the series, she and Honami display flashes of affection for Itsuki, though Manami is more subdued of the two.

Despite having no magic to call upon, Itsuki does possess the ability of Glam Sight, a demon eye that can see through magic. Unfortunately for Itsuki, the power, though considerable, takes a heavy toll on its wielder. Every time he uses the eye, his body is weakened, often leaving him comatose.

Zecxs provided the animation for the show, giving it a fairly traditional style. The character designs are distinctive though unremarkable; however this is due more to the original designs of the light novels rather than the studio. That said, the animation is merely average considering its age.

Regardless of one’s thoughts on the show, Nozomi’s treatment is certainly worth mentioning. Collection 1 comes in a heavy box, with illustrations of the characters adorning the front and back. The subtitles are easily readable, without any spelling errors to be found. Extras are the standard fare, including promos, trailers, and textless opening and closings. Though this might seem meager, the real meat of the set lies in the 120 page book that includes character profiles, explanations of the magic featured, and voice actor interviews. There is a huge amount of information to dig through and greatly adds to the value of the set.

Because the series was shown out of order when it originally aired, there are two options for viewers to choose from including chronological order and the original broadcast order. For better clarity, first time viewers probably want to watch the episodes in chronological order, as the story flows better.

Rental Magica is far from perfect, but one can’t deny its entertainment value. The characters are all given time to develop, with everyone getting time to shine in the early episodes, setting up for the main story that gets going just as the set ends. The show’s unique use of the various magics employed coupled with Nozomi’s standout presentation makes it an excellent package for those looking for something different in the fantasy genre.

When it comes to delivering abundant doses of action and slapstick comedy, no anime can hold a candle to Soul Eater. The supernatural series about meisters and weapons working together at the “Death Weapon Meister Academy” to gather corrupt souls for the Grim Reaper has seen two previous releases of 13 episode installments, with part 3 being the most recent. Covering episodes 27-39, part 3 begins the final countdown toward the conclusion of the series.

Picking up where the previous release left off, the DWMA is recouping after the culmination of the battle with Medusa and the Asura. The group begins picking up a series of mysterious occurrences in a small town, sending Maka and newly recruited Crona to investigate. There they encounter a plot to revive the long thought dead witch, Arachne. 800 years prior to the current storyline, Arachne had been defeated by the Grim Reaper, separating her body into millions of spiders to escape death. Over the course of her exile, she has accumulated a handful of powerful allies as well as a legion of followers. This coupled with her ability to create “demon weapons” puts her in a class above Medusa.

Because of the impending danger, Doctor Stein decides it’s important for the students to prepare, teaching them to link their resonances with one another. Doing so has the potential to empower the group but only so long as they can get along, a fact Maka and Black Star discover the hard way. Elsewhere, Death the Kid is tasked with retrieving a magic weapon that Arachne’s group plan to steal, in the process discovering a conspiracy linking his father to the weapon’s creation.

Compounding matters further, Medusa revives herself from apparent death, taking on a new form. Proving you can’t keep a bad witch down, she picks up the threads of deceit she had previously planted, forcefully recruiting Crona as a spy and using Stein’s own friend Marie as a pawn expedite his increasing madness. Everything comes to a head as the three sides clash over the mysterious weapon “Brew”.

Much like the 26 episodes that have come before, this release sports some outstanding visuals. Studio Bones is known for their breathtaking animation and Soul Eater builds on that trend. As is per usual, Funimation offers another stellar dub that should warrant no complaints.

Extras offer a similar helping of what has come before, with a series of comedic shorts, a fairly lively commentary featuring the cast and crew, rounded out by the usual trailers for upcoming releases. Not a bad offering for an anime release.

From the first episode to the last, Soul Eater continues to be just an incredibly fun series. There’s no shortage of unique characters, each with their own creative traits and the premise continues to push the boundaries of the imagination. If you’re looking for a deep, thought provoking viewing experience, consider yourself out of luck. Soul Eater isn’t that kind of show.

However, if gorgeous animation and lively characters involved in amazingly detailed action is your thing, then consider Soul Eater the must see anime of the year. The fourth installment can’t arrive soon enough.

53 light novels and Slayers continues its run as one of the more impressive anime franchises in history with 5 anime seasons, 3 OVAs, 5 movies, games, and a few manga titles under its belt. The dungeon and sorcery parody series has done quite nicely for itself, establishing itself as a main stay in anime culture.

Originating as a series of novel series by Hajime Kanzaka and Rui Araizumi, Slayers follows the misadventures of Lina Inverse, a sorceress whose power is only matched by her domineering attitude. Throughout the series’ run, she found herself challenged by potent sorcerers, demons, and other would be world conquerors, with nothing less than the fate of the world at stake.

Over time, other strange characters began joining her on her quest such as the memory deficient swordsman Gourry Gabriev, a chimera sorcerer named Zelgadis Greywords, and the magically inclined princess Amelia Wir Tesla Seyruun. In the last set, the group encountered the magical imp Pokota, a displaced prince who has decided to tag along with them for the time being as they begin a new journey to resurrect Rezo the Red Priest, a former adversary who once nearly brought the world to the brink of destruction, in order to save Pokota’s people from a mysterious plague. Along the way, they encounter a magical suit of armor named Nama who, much like Pokota, finds itself on the wrong side of Lina’s temper before permanently joining the group on their adventure.

Along the way, Lina and the crew are forced to tangle with a mysterious assassin, a cavalcade of monsters, and a potentially apocalyptic struggle for the world. Not to mention the various conflicts that arises between each other.

While Evolution-R is billed as the fifth season, it would be more apt to describe it as the second half of season 4. Many of the dangling plot threads are picked up upon and given a satisfactory conclusion by season’s end.

Naturally, the series’ light hearted nature is still ever present with the non-stop barrage of jokes and the melodramatic one-off episodes woven in between the plot. There are some misses, but for the most part, the writers nail the humor. Lina is still overly arrogant, resulting in several battles, while Gourry and Amelia remain good natured but intellectually challenged as ever, with Zelgadis playing the straight man.

Like last season, there is a shift in tone halfway through, as the gang encounters the assassin Zuuma once again, leading to scenes of graphic violence intertwined with gruesome deaths. Naturally, the comedic aspects of the series are pushed into the background in favor of building the plot but never vanishes altogether as there are still several lighthearted moments to found spliced throughout.

Like the last season, anyone looking for bonus features will be sorely disappointed. Funimation went through the trouble of reuniting the original cast, so a commentary or a featurette spotlighting them would have been appreciated. As far as what is included here, textless openings and closings are all viewers are going to get.

Slayers Evolution-R isn’t a season new viewers want to start from. It’s reliance on the show’s continuity make it essential for dedicated fans to pick up. Newcomers would do better to start from the beginning if they want to get the most out of this release. For everyone already indoctrinated into the world of Slayers, Evolution-R is icing on the cake. The rollicking adventures and frenzied battles are what fans have come to expect and appreciate from the series. Couple that with the nostalgia of seeing several past faces, and this is a set no Slayers fan should be without.

Video Game Review: Super Mario Galaxy 2

It’s not hard to imagine that when a franchise has been around as long as Mario has, the amount of hype and anticipation that can be generated by the release of a new game in the series. Following hot on the heels of the critically acclaimed New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Super Mario Galaxy 2 once again pits the heroic plumber against his nemesis Bowser, still supersized from the last game, this time taking their feud to the deepest reaches of space.

When one thinks of Mario, a couple things come to mind. First is the commitment on display by Nintendo to put out the best possible game they can for their proverbial star. The other would have to be the amount of creativity and variety packed into every grand adventure. By now it’s a given that Mario is the king of console games.

Last year’s New Super Mario Bros. Wii was a prime example of what a Mario game should be; a fun throwback to what makes video games so enjoyable. However, to many hardcore gamers, that was all it amounted to, a throwback. While the game increased focus was on the use of the wii-mote, aside from the updated graphics, many could say that they had been there, done that. For their next installment, Nintendo decided to go about a different route, instead giving gamers a sequel to the vastly different Super Mario Galaxy.

Super Mario Galaxy was a departure from the typical Mario game in that, it revamped the entire franchise from the ground up. Gone was the side scrolling adventure, as the familiar confines of the Mushroom Kingdom gave way to an entire Galaxy for Mario to explore. Gamers were treated to free-roaming 3D environments that still retained the distinct style that made Mario unique. Needless to say, even the most jaded of gamers was forced to stand up and take notice.

The game opens with Mushroom Kingdom once again under siege by Bowser, who also once again, kidnaps the Princess. From there, players are blasted into the galaxy, where they are introduced to the new control scheme, using the wii-mote and the nunchuk to guide Mario through each level. The controls are vastly different from those in New Super Mario Bros. Wii and are most likely going to catch a few people by surprise. While they’re easy enough to master, one can’t help but prefer the former’s controls.

Visually, it should come as no surprise that this game is stunning. The landscapes are picturesque and a wonder to behold. The 3D landscape is certainly a step above the usual 2D world Mario has been known to inhabit. At the very least, one can say this is the best looking Mario game in the series storied history.

The inclusion of Yoshi also brings new powers that can take a minute to get used to. Mario himself also receives new power-ups to assist him on his quest. Naturally, these are reflected by the environment to which he is exploring. Of course, Yoshi retains his usual abilities to hover in the air and tongue lash opponents, though this time the player must aim the wii-mote at his target. Levels requiring Yoshi are scattered throughout but for the most part, Mario takes on certain galaxies unassisted.

For players struggling to complete levels, there are a number a number of aids available. If you find yourself dying too many times, Rosalina, a character introduced in the original Super Mario Galaxy, will offer to play through the level for you. The downside is that the star you are required to collect is downgraded from gold to bronze. Players can also invite their friends to join in as Luigi if co-op makes for a more enjoyable experience.

Ultimately, Super Mario Galaxy 2 stands as a testament to what makes the franchise great. Every year, more and more titles are released, challenging Mario for the crown of gaming, and Nintendo manages to step up to the challenge every time. Super Mario Galaxy 2 exceeds all expectations, flawlessly incorporating the new controls of the wii with fantastic environments that will wow even the most experienced of gamers. The Mario franchise is the most well known and universally recognized. There is so much to explore that gamers will find themselves losing track of time for weeks on end. Consider this title among the franchise’s best.

Kenichi: the Mightiest Disciple Season 2 Part 2

Kenichi: the Mightiest Disciple isn’t a show that will wow audiences with its animation, nor will it stand out above the rest for having a deep involving story. Even so, what the series lacks in depth, it more than makes up for in fun martial arts combat.

Kenichi: the Mightiest Disciple first landed on the scene as a manga in 2002 spawning 38 volumes and counting. The series eventually made the leap into animation where it enjoyed a run of 50 episodes. Since then, the series about a young man wanting to learn martial arts to protect the girl he loves has arrived here in the States courtesy of Funimation, with two seasons and four releases under its belt.

The show stars the title character, Kenichi Shirahama, who wants to become a master of the martial arts to protect his crush Miu, who is a formidable fighter in her own right. The lengths Kenichi is willing to go to get the girl are pretty hysterical and usually result in him taking a beating.

Over the course of the series, Kenichi has evolved from a wimp to a more than descent martial arts master, learning skills and tackling other elite masters. Eventually, he landed himself in the sights of the rival group known as Ragnarok, presenting new and deadly challenges for the young disciple. Pretty soon the action began dominating the plot, and continues to do so in this final release. Of course, as with the bulk of the series, there is plenty of training left to do and plenty of rivals still to conquer.

The primary arc flowing through the set is Kenichi’s upcoming showdown with his ultimate foe Ryuto, who was at one point his childhood friend. Ryuto is leader of Ragnarok and a powerful warrior in his own right. Over the years, he has grown into a darker person, developing a vendetta against Kenichi. When Kenichi engages him in final battle, he does so hoping to save his former friend.

The animation in Kenichi: the Mightiest Disciple isn’t anything to write home about. There isn’t anything wrong with it; it can only be considered average. The final release comes in a pair of slim disc cases with full frame aspect ratio. Each disc houses 6 episodes a piece, leaving little room for extras.

All in all, viewers who have stuck with Kenichi through the finale of his journey, this set is a must have. If you’re new to the series, this is definitely not where you want to begin. Though there is little plot development to be found, the abundance of action coupled with the emotional final battle is sure to provide solid entertainment.

If you’re an anime fan, chances are you’ve already seen, read, or at the very least heard of Fullmetal Alchemist. Originally published as a manga written and drawn by Hiromu Arakawa, Fullmetal Alchemist tells the story of Edward and Alphonse Elric, two young alchemists who lost everything the night they decided to commit the greatest taboo in alchemy, bringing someone back to life. The series was adapted into back in 2003 and met with critical success for its deeply moving character drama and overly dark story. The only problem was that it strayed away from the original manga’s story, developing a new one in its place leaving purists calling foul.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is Studio Bones answer to those wanting to see an anime that more closely reflected the source material. Not to be mistaken for a sequel, Brotherhood instead retells the series from the beginning, adhering to much tighter story that leaves little room for divergence from what Arakawa originally intended.

Unfortunately, this means that the early episodes of the first series were bound to get reanimated. To some this will probably feel like an unnecessary rehash. Others, i.e. those who are new to the franchise won’t mind considering everything is new to them.

Set during an earlier time period in a world similar to our own, Alchemy is the leading form of science, allowing the military to win wars and create new inventions to further the progress of the state. Edward and Alphonse are two gifted young alchemists who committed the ultimate forbidden act in alchemic practice when they attempted to bring their mother back from the dead. Because alchemy was founded on the principle that everything is based on equivalent exchange, Ed lost is arm and leg while Al was stripped of his body, binding his soul to a suit of armor.

Flash forward a few years later and the two now work for the military, with Edward as a state alchemist and Alphonse following him around central. Due to Ed’s young age, he is looked at as something of a prodigy, gaining him the respect of other state alchemists. Together the two use the resources granted to them by the state to hunt for the legendary Philosopher’s Stone, the key to restoring their bodies. As the show carries on, the two encounter a host of villains wanting to use the stone and the alchemists hunting it for their own purposes, namely the Homunculi.

Knowing the importance and anticipation behind this series, Funimation really stepped up to the plate to make this a worthwhile release. Rather than releasing the series in single disc format like the company did with the 2003 original, fans are treated to 13 episodes housed on two discs. In comparison to the previous release, that’s three times the amount of episodes. In addition, two audio commentaries featuring various members of the English voice cast can be found, one on each disc. Both are lively and somewhat informative as those new to the cast explain their takes on the role that was previously acted by someone else. Also included is the standard textless opening and closing as well as trailers for upcoming releases.

From top to bottom, the presentation of the show is superb. Studio Bones really went out of their way to make sure this was the definitive take on Fullmetal Alchemist. Not only does the animation show signs of improvement, the series received a stunning widescreen transfer that also helps put it a notch above it’s predecessor.

If there is one flaw to this set, it’s that it is basically a repeat of what has come before. While its almost guaranteed that the rest of the series will be different, those who have seen the original will come out of this with a sense of déjà vu. It also doesn’t help that because the animators knew they would have to animate the same story again, they opted to move through it as quickly as possible, creating pacing issues, though as stated before, new comers will be hard pressed to notice.

Fullmetal Alchemist is a gem of a series and truth be told, Brotherhood is as well. While there are minor gripes to be found, the quality of the set more than makes up for them. Regardless of whether you enjoyed the previous series or are a staunch supporter of the source material, this is the definitive Fullmetal Alchemist that everyone has been waiting for.

Created by Natsuki Takaya, Fruits Basket has since gone on to become one of the most popular manga titles in the world, running for 23 volumes before making the transition to anime. In America alone, the series has enjoyed success as the #1 selling shojo title. For fans who are unfamiliar with the series seeking to find out the reasons behind its popularity, Banquet provides an excellent primer.

Fruits Baskets is the story of Tohru Honda, a recently orphaned high school student who lives with the Sohma family in exchange cooking, cleaning, and general housekeeping. Over time she develops a friendship with her landlords and discovers that they are not what they appear. As it turns out, the Sohmas are possessed by the animal spirits of the zodiac, cursed to transform into said animal when hugged by a member of the opposite sex.

Fruits Basket: Banquet is akin to a supplemental book, featuring extra content that no fan would want to be without. Included are full color illustrations, interviews, commentaries, and games. There is much more content to be found between the covers that is sure to please fans though to detail it all would be exhaustive.

Casual fans will probably find minimal value in Banquet, diehards on the other hand, who can’t get enough of Takaya’s unique world and are still hungry for more are sure to find themselves attracted to this release.

DVD Review: Dragon Ball Season 4

When people think of anime, three series usually come to mind; Pokemon, Sailor Moon, and Dragon Ball, the latter of which being considered the most iconic. The series has achieved an unparalleled level of popularity that it has become standard viewing for anime fans, casual and hardcore alike. The series has certainly left its imprint on the US with countless releases that span from the original Dragon Ball to its predecessor Dragon Ball Z to the controversial and ill liked Dragon Ball GT. Twenty years later and the show about a little alien boy named Goku, originally sent to conquer the Earth only to become its greatest protector, is only now being released in complete season sets.

The previous box set gave us a the final moments of Goku’s struggle against the “Red Ribbon Army”, a militaristic organization bent on global conquest, as well as his battles against numerous supernatural foes as per the challenge of a fortune teller named Baba. From there, Goku and company once again entered into the “World Martial Arts Tournament” where they discovered new and powerful foes waiting to challenge them. Season 4 picks up in the middle of the tournament as Goku is forced to confront his toughest opponent yet, the three-eyed Tien shinhan.

When the two finally meet in the center of the stage, an explosive battle erupts that over shadows everything that has come before, as both combatants try out new techniques and out maneuver one another to gain the advantage. While one of the fighters comes up short, the tournament leads directly into the next arc where the story really starts to get going.

When the others discover Krillin murdered, they are shocked to find out that it was at the hands of King Piccolo, a demon king that ravaged the Earth several years prior, having now been freed once more. His goal is to collect the Dragon Balls in order to regain his youth, sending his demon minions after the strongest martial artists who might one day challenge him. Of course this puts him in direct conflict with Goku, setting the stage for several battles with his followers.

From a quality standpoint, the fourth season is far and away the superior grouping of episodes. From the story to the action, everything screams epic. It also helps that Funimation has gone back and digitally restored the series, supplying fans with a pleasing transfer.

Extras are once again minimal, sporting a marathon play feature that allows the viewer to watch the entire series as a whole, eliminating opening and closing credits. There is also a nifty booklet that gives us character bios and episode summaries.

If you’re already a fan of Dragon Ball then you know this set is essential viewing. At over thirty episodes a set, Funimation is really giving the fans a bargain, making it easier than ever to discover the magic of Akira Toriyama’s classic series.

A number of sports films have suggested that a sport can unite various people from differing backgrounds through their common appreciation of the game. While that may be the basic selling point to Invictus, there’s so much more to this movie detailing the 1995 Rugby Cup match between New Zealand and South Africa. In fact, Invictus takes place at a crossroads between sports and politics with the unity of a nation at stake.

Chronicling the rise of Nelson Mandela as he takes his place as the leader of South Africa, Clint Eastwood’s latest venture takes us back to the turbulent years of the nation’s struggle for racial harmony among the people. After serving 27 years in prison, Mandela is prepared to bridge the racial divide in his country, using the unconventional means of doing so through sports. To do this he sets his sights on the less than spectacular rugby team captained by Francois Pienaar.

Due to the team’s ethnicity being mostly white, many of Mandela’s own supporters despised them, proposing that the team be dismantled under the pretense that they were a symbol black oppression. Rather than doing so, Mandela instead decides to challenge them to turn their losses around in order to inspire hope for their country.

From there, it’s pretty easy to guess where the film is headed, with all the dissenters coming together and joining as one to celebrate the triumph of their team and Mandela as a true champion for peace. Of course therein lies the flaw of Invictus. Taking the naïve belief that a sport can heal a fractured nation may sound good on paper but when applying it to real life, especially in the case of Africa, where Rugby is still considered a “white man’s” game, has to be considered a misstep for Eastwood.

Fortunately, the cast makes up for this with Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon turning in their usual superb performances. Freeman is the obvious choice to play Mandela, from his noticeable similarity in appearance to his reserved charm. Damon’s accent is also convincing though a bit distracting for those who have heard his actual voice.

While Invictus isn’t likely to win Eastwood any awards, it still thrives as a portrait of Mandela and his struggle for peace. The story is questionable, even if there is some truth to it, the film still manages to come off as very natural and realistic, attributed to the fact that it was shot on location in South Africa.

As things are, it would be best to leave the cheers to the onscreen fans.

Picking up where the last set left off, the Straw Hat Pirates adventures in Alabasta have come to an end and it’s time for some much needed relaxation.

To do us all a favor, I’m going to withhold going over the basic plot as there are already several reviews up that already detail that information. Instead, lets just jump into what’s here.
After saving the kingdom of Alabasta from Baroque Works, Luffy and his crew once again resume their journey of the Grand Line in his quest to be king of the pirates. The first group of episodes delves into the back stories of Zoro and Chopper, giving further insight into what shaped them into the people they are today.

From there, we get a three episode mini arc about an old man named Zenny whose sole wish is to be a pirate. Unfortunately, he has a weak heart that is killing him. This is really nothing more than a fun diversion as most of the episodes on the set are.

Afterward, the set wraps up with a five episode story titled the Rainbow Mist arc, providing another fun diversion but nothing more. The Straw Hats bump into a scientist named Henzo and discovers the strange phenomenon known as the Rainbow Mists. Of course this arc has all the ingredients that make One Piece great including battles, treasure, and people trying to accomplish their dreams.

Bonus features are nowhere to be found her with the exception of a marathon play feature that plays the episodes back to back, eliminating the intro. Aside from that, there are a listing of trailers for Funimation’s latest releases.

If you’ve already collected the series up till now, chances are you will probably pick this set up. The show is epic, managing to draw the audience in every time. That said, these episodes are mainly “filler” and have no bearing on the future of the series. They’re not bad but they aren’t at the same level as other episode from the series past.

All in all, while this set is enjoyable, as previously stated, the episodes provide merely pleasant diversions until the story picks up again. Unlike past sets, this one isn’t required viewing.

In the not too distant future, Japan has fallen victim to a massive earthquake, leveling the once proud country. In the wake of this event, a new prison system is erected, referred to as Deadman Wonderland. In this pseudo prison, criminals are pitted against one another for the benefit of park goers who attend the wonderland.

When he is framed for the deaths of his classmates, Ganta Igarashi is sentenced to Deadman Wonderland with a death penalty awaiting him. Once inside, he is befriended by a mysterious albino girl named Shiro who demonstrates abnormal strength and is permitted to wander the park unquestioned. It’s not long before Ganta encounters the true culprit behind his friend’s murders, the Red Man. During a conflict between the two, Ganta discovers he possesses ability to wield his blood as a weapon, gaining the attention of the warden

As volume 2 opens, Ganta and Shiro confront fellow inmate “Crow”, who demonstrates that he too can control his blood at will. A brief scuffle between the two leads to them being captured and arranged to battle one another in a death match. Eventually, Ganta finds others like himself and Crow, possessing a variety of strange attributes.

Meanwhile a startling discovery is made regarding Shiro that furthers the girl’s mystery. The questions that plagued the first volume are being explored; giving reader’s a glimpse into the series’ possible direction. By the end of the volume, even more questions arise, leaving readers anxiously waiting for the next installment.

This is a mature title and as such blood and profanity are prevalent. Due to the character’s main power being the control over blood, the fight scenes can be quit gory. Those who are squeamish may also want to steer clear of one scene depicting a character having their eye gouged out.

In looking at the art, the style leans more on the cartoony side but does nothing to detract from the overall serious tone of the story.

From start to finish, Deadman Wonderland continues to be one of the best new releases of the year. Only two volumes in and the characters and their setting are already so well developed, it carries the feeling that the series has been running longer than it really has. For those tired of the generic shonen story, book a trip to this carnage laden thrill ride.

Considering all its years in publication, it’s arguable that Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland has ever experienced the popularity it is now enjoying. In just the last few years, the story of Alice’s journey through the mythical world has been adapted into a Tim Burton movie, been re-imagined into a sci-fi series, and now envisioned as a manga. Originally a PC game developed by Quinrose, the story was later adapted into a manga. While many of the characters share names with their classic counterparts, the similarities end there.

Throughout the series, the cast and characters roaming Wonderland have been shown to range from docile to vicious in their approach to Alice. This volume delves further into the goings on in country as Alice finds herself forgetting her previous life, instead becoming more comfortable with her surroundings.

Peter White continues in his pursuit of Alice’s heart, taking on the form of a little white rabbit that proves too cute for Alice to resist. Unfortunately, Peter isn’t the only one who has grown attached to Alice as many of Wonderland’s top players begin vying for her attention. However, this is not necessarily a good thing as twice in the company of the Hatters, Alice’s life is threatened, once by the twins Dee and Dum who wish to use her as a means to test their favorite knife, as well as by their leader Blood Dupre.

Later on, the queen Vivaldi orders Alice visit her castle with the threat that she will continue to behead her guards until the girl complies. While there Vivaldi reveals her treasure, explaining her rise to power. Meanwhile, Julius is confronted by Blood who declares that he will be taking Alice for himself, with force if necessary. While bickering, the two come to the same conclusion that Alice is slowly changing everyone around her simply by coming into contact with her.

This volume delved further into the mysteries of Wonderland, giving us much needed character development while at the same time furthering the plot. Many of the characters have begun to reveal their true nature though this seems to do little to affect Alice; her attitude toward those around her is akin to someone caught in a soap opera. Even after nearly losing her life twice to the Hatters, she treats them with indifference rather than as people who attempted to take her life. Also disturbing is Alice’s infatuation with Peter’s rabbit form, as she acquiesces to his every request, including allowing him to sleep in bed with her so long as he remains a rabbit. While it can be argued that it’s Wonderland’s effect on her, there isn’t any evidence to support this, making these out of character occurrences that much more baffling.

The artwork continues to be a mixed bag as characters are given attractive costume designs that compliment each of their personalities but too many of the male characters lack distinctive facial features to differentiate them. When compared to the colors they display on the cover, the black and white interior is actually preferred as it accentuates the series’ gothic flare. Fortunately, there are also more backgrounds to be seen here rather than in previous volumes, though they come off as an afterthought, lacking any significant detail.

For all its flaws, Alice in the Country of Hearts continues to be an enjoyable read. The growing mystery behind the character’s intrigue with Alice coupled with her own subtle shifts in personality make it a worthwhile venture for fans of fantasy and romance.

At Kingyo used books, every manga one could ever want is available to those seeking to reconnect with a childhood memory of better times, whether it be aspirations to be a world famous detective or the desire to find a soul mate similar to one they had read about. Every day, an eccentric group of people congregate to the tiny bookstore celebrating their love of manga and the influence it holds over their lives.

Published under Viz Media’s SigIKKI imprint, Kingyo Used Books is the reader’s answer to why they enjoy manga. Each chapter focuses on a different character, each connected through their appreciation of manga. Each one believes they have grown out of what they believe to be a childhood hobby. Over the course of the story, the characters gradually realize the truth that they cannot nor do they desire to forget the medium that has brought them so many years of pleasure. In doing so, they discover Kingyo used books, a second hand bookstore specializing in manga.

Seven different stories are told, each one realistic and magical at the same time. In many ways, Kingyo Used Books is an observation of what it means to be fan of manga. In many ways, manga is a tool to lift people’s spirits and connect to others.
The series episodic nature at times makes the story predictable, following a pattern of introducing a random character with memories of their favorite series, eventually leading to that character wanting to recapture the magic of their favorite manga and coming across Kingyo. For the most part, the series hits surprisingly close to home, providing sentimental flashbacks for manga lovers.

Also included are linear notes, detailing the series mentioned. This is helpful in understanding the appeal of the series the characters are discussing and may act as a gateway for others wanting to read the same story. There are also more detailed profiles located in the back of the book.

From cover to cover, Kingyo Used Books is a pleasure to read, reminding manga readers why they love the medium.

At Random: What is Happening to the Manga Industry?!

The manga industry has been on a well documented decline as of late but no one could have guessed things had gotten this desperate. Last week, Viz media released a total of 60 people in an effort to “restructure”, around 40% of the company’s workforce. This is the second time in as many years that the manga giant has undergone major layoffs in the face of the worsening economy.

A week later and CMX manga, a subsidiary of DC comics has announced its immediate folding. The Co-publishers of DC, Jim Lee and Dan Didio released this statement:
“Over the course of the last six years, CMX has brought a diverse list of titles to America and we value the books and creators that we helped introduce to a new audience. Given the challenges that manga in the American marketplace, we have decided that CMX will cease publishing new titles as of July 1, 2010.”

While things certainly aren’t looking good, there is a silver lining; this has happened once before and the industry managed to come out of it relatively in one piece. Viz has also confirmed that it has no immediate plans to cease publication of any of its titles.

So how did this happen? Well let’s take a look:
Price increases: In the last two years, every company raised the price of its manga by $1-2 dollars. Considering the state of the economy, the price raise couldn’t have come at a worse time. All of Viz’s Shonen Jump releases featured a price jump from $7.95-$9.95. Something like this was poorly planned and obviously took a toll on the consumers who probably retreated online to read their favorite series for free. This brings us to the next point…

Online scanning: Those scanning and uploading manga and making it available for free are hurting the business. For one thing, it’s illegal and no different than doing the same for music. If a product is available for viewing for free, there is little incentive for consumers to purchase the product. Viz Media has been rather passive about the issue, making matters worse considering their place as North America’s largest publisher.

Over Saturation of the Market: Over the last few years, there has been a noticeable spike in license’s, from more well known and popular series such as Soul Eater to the obscure Saturn Apartments. The increase in licensed titles by publishers has over saturated the market and in the long run, hurt the publisher. Viz is a prime example, grabbing up nearly every title in Shueisha’s library. The fact is, the demand is not nearly great enough to support the decision to bring over many of these series. Already proven titles like Bleach and Naruto are understandable but a series like Dorohedoro only appeals to a niche market.

Marketing: Manga has a series for everyone and should be marketed as such. From action, to romance, even slice of life, the list goes on and on. The industry needs to try and reach a new audience. Advertising in their own magazines won’t gain new readership. There should be ads in well known magazines such as Time or even Empire. It’s obvious that the current readership isn’t enough to sustain the industry, so try to increase it.

If the manga industry is to survive, those in charge need to step back and take a closer look at what is hurting their companies. There are several other reasons for the drastic downturn, far too many to list, however those detailed above could possibly provide future insight as to what measures need to be taken. Laying off employees won’t increase sales. If something isn’t done now, fans may just witness the downfall of manga in the US.

DVD Review: Survivors

When Terry Nation was forced off Survivors due to behind the scenes politics, he looked to different media to finish the story he had begun. His original vision was written and recorded in the form of a novel, allowing fans to judge for themselves which was the superior narrative. Over thirty years later and it would seem things have come full circle for Survivors as Nation’s story is once again given new life on television.

Following the premise of the original, a massive virus outbreak wipes out a good portion of the human race leaving behind an eclectic group of “survivors” who couldn’t be more different save for the fact that they each have lost everything. Shots of empty cities recall familiar scenes from post apocalyptic films albeit on a more intimate scale. By the end of the first episode the group has found each other decided it would be more beneficiary to them to work together.

The core group consists of various personalities that mesh surprisingly well given their differences. Abby is the de facto leader of the group as well as the mother figure. She is also unique in the fact that unlike everyone else who is immune to the virus, she had contracted it only to recover. Greg is a loner seeking only to leave behind the city and rebuild his life. Anya is a doctor, hiding her profession from the others out of shame at not being able to save anyone. Al is a rich playboy, having been born with a silver spoon in his mouth. He happens upon a newly orphaned Muslim boy named Najid who he decides to look after. Rounding out the group is Tom, a former convict willing to murder to get what he wants.

Over the course of the series, the group comes across other survivors who have succumbed to the animalistic tendencies. It also appears that a small fragment have the government still exists, trying to bring order to the chaos around them. There is also a fourth group consisting of scientists who may or may not be connected to the virus’ origin.

While the original focuses mostly on survival, the new series deals more with discovering what was behind the pandemic and how it happened. Obviously the group evolves more into a family with romances blooming and conflicts arising.

If there is one drawback to the show, it’s that it has no real ending. Sadly a third season was never commissioned, leaving major character’s fates up in the air ala Carnivale. If viewers can get around not having a conclusive ending, then the series is a must see for sci-fi buffs.

DVD Review: Legion

Hollywood and the apocalypse are no strangers to each other. In fact there have been so many different variations of the end of times that one has to wonder if those chugging out the scripts have the real inside track.

The latest in the growing list of end of the world themed movies, Legion pits humanity against God of all things, and the almighty’s legion of demonic forces. While there is enough religious imagery to possibly offend those who would choose to view this as a slap in the face of God, it should be noted that Legion’s intent is only to provide hokey and cheesy fun wrapped in 100 minutes of cinematic drivel. The truth of the matter is, Legion should be taken with a grain of salt.

If you’ve already seen the trailer you already have your full understanding of what the film entails. God is royally upset with humanity and believes us to have lost our way. Rather than create a second massive flood to drown us all much in the way he did the first time he was perturbed, he sends out a swarm of warrior angels to wipe out his creation. Michael is a warrior angel whose disagrees with this method and decides to stand in the face of overwhelming odds to defend an unborn child who may be humanity’s only hope at salvation.

The result is a long drawn out battle from a desert shelter between Michael and the angels. Of course there are others huddled inside desperate for survival, who agrees to help out Michael if for no other reason than to save their own skins. One would think that man made weapons would have little effect on angelic beings created by the almighty but Hollywood is determined to prove otherwise.

If Legion were a B-movie, it would be acceptable but unfortunately, it fails at even that. There are just too many unintended funny moments that will have the audience giggling rather than sitting glued to their seats in shock. It doesn’t help that for an action movie, the choreography is nothing more than lazily strung together sequences of actors yelling and shooting.

What this boils down to is 100 minutes of silliness. From the above description it should be made apparent that Legion is at the end of the day, a harmless film that is seen then forgotten. Those hoping to find a hidden cult classic will be sorely disappointed are better left searching elsewhere. Five minutes in and your likely to realize you already lost a part of your life.

Manga Review: Itazura Na Kiss volume 2

The theme of an odd couple sharing little to know traits and overcoming their dislike for one another has become a common archetype of shojo manga; so much so that unless a new ingredient is added to the formula, the series is dubbed uncreative and unworthy of most people’s time. Itazura Na Kiss sets itself apart from these other series by having the distinction of being among the first to apply the oft practiced plot devise. As such, considering its age, the series deserves manga fans attention.

Jumping into volume 2, Kotoko and her father are still living with Naoki and his family. During this time, Naoki’s mother continues to try to get the two to hook up, doing everything in her power to play matchmaker. Of course, Naoki continues with his “holier than thou” attitude, being unnecessarily rude to Kotoko.

While Naoki has a genius level intellect with an IQ of 200, he is constantly sullen and just a miserable excuse for a human being. Even though Kotoko attends the same college as him, he can’t help but look down on her every chance he gets. One has to wonder why he would go so far out of his way to display his distaste for a girl who does nothing but fawn over him.

Never the less, the book continues to pour on the charm in the energetic Kotoko, who continues to be the stand out character of the series. Between her and Naoki’s mother, the two more than make up for his overly angst attitude.

While the series definitely has its flaws, that can be attributed to its age more than anything else. Itazura Na Kiss continues to be a superb read and should be included in every shojo fan’s collection.

Studio Gonzo has been known for its varying degrees in quality in anime. For every Samurai 7, there is a Dragonaut that keeps the studio from truly breaking out as one of Japan’s best. There was once a time when it seemed that the studio could do no wrong, delivering multiple series that ranged from good to fantastic as evidenced by the 2000 sciene fiction anime effort, Vandread.

The series was originally licensed by Geneon in 2002 before the company folded, leaving Funimation to pick up the title in one of its many rescues. With this newest release fans are treated to an economically savvy release, with both the entire series plus its two never before released OVAs packed together in one set.

While the series is a mix of sci-fi and comedy, at its core it’s about the story of Hibiki Tokai, a lowly third class citizen trying to prove that there is more to him than just his class distinction. While sneaking aboard a military vessel, he is captured and prepared for execution, only to escape when mankind’s worst enemy attacks, women. You see this is an intergalactic battle of the sexes, with the fate of the universe on the line. Eventually one thing leads to another, and Hibiki finds himself the allying with the women and becoming a savior of sorts, gaining a harem in the process.

Hibiki it seems, is the only one capable of piloting an experimental mecha that has the ability to merge with the women’s own ships, setting up for jokes on sexual innuendo that start out as funny but grow tiresome as the series progresses.

The episodes start out pretty formulaic, taking the route of having a “monster of the week” format. Luckily, the outlandish characters act as a saving grace, breaking up the episodic nature until we get to the real meat and potatoes of the show. This format holds true for the second season as well and would be best viewed only a couple episodes at a time.

The OVAs are primarily recaps of the first and second seasons with new animation sprinkled throughout. They are presented with only Japanese audio for an option and while they wouldn’t stand on their own as a valuable release, their inclusion here is appreciated.

The picture quality is excellent with colors popping off the screen and grain held to a minimum. Considering that this is only a ten year old show, it should come as no surprise that this is a very nice looking series. The dub quality on both sides is satisfactory with neither one outdoing the other.

From top to bottom, Vandread is an undeniably fun show. While the series does drag at times and the jokes run a bit thin, its great sense of energy and humor coupled with unique characters make it worth checking out for fans of sci-fi and situational comedies.

Any self respecting anime fan already knows the story of Dragonball Z. Everyone is already familiar with the story of the little monkey boy named Son Goku, initially sent to Earth as it’s conqueror only to become its greatest hero and savior. There’s no need to rehash the familiar story or to go into detail describing the multi-million dollar franchise it has spawned. What we’re looking at today is a set that originated straight from Japan known as the “Dragon Box”.

When first released to the Japanese public, the hype going into the Dragon Box was almost surreal. Featuring digitally re-mastered episodes as well as a book that included character art, episode summaries, and family trees, the Dragon Box was released as huge brick sets that contained over a forty episodes each. Given its initial success in Japan, Funimation has ported the set over here, once again putting Dragon Ball Z on store shelves.

What we get is somewhat different than the orange sets Funimation has previously been dishing out. For one thing, colors are generally brighter, with grain and dirt being at a minimum. Fans will also take note that the image is full screen as originally intended, rather than the cropping the season sets feature. It would also be wise to note that the sole music option is that of the Japanese track which has its fair share of supporters as well as detractors.

The episodes featured here are a mixed bunch in terms of quality. The set picks up with Goku’s epic encounter with Frieza, the evil emperor of the universe. The battle is long and arduous; the longest in the series run in fact. While its length has sparked several debates as to whether it really stands out as the best fight in the series, the scope is epic, with both combatants battling on a dying planet with Goku discovering a whole new source of power, transforming into the legendary “Super Saiyan”.

Afterward, the quality of episodes takes a nose dive when we reach the “Garlic Jr. Saga”. Reviled as being the worst of the sagas among fandom, viewing these episodes it’s easy to see why. The first problem would be that the main villain isn’t all that interesting. Originally, Garlic Jr. was a one off villain featured in the first movie only to be defeated handily by Gohan. The second problem is the unusual jumps in power. This has always been a problem for the series as a whole but its patently obvious here that the writers are using them as a crutch to get by.

Fortunately, the series recovers in the form of the “Trunks Saga”, treating fans to the introduction of the youthful Trunks who arrives in the nick of time to challenge the recently resurrected Frieza and his father King Cold. When the teen shows off that he too possesses the ability to transform into a Super Saiyan, the group is left wondering who the boy is and where he comes from. Unfortunately, that information comes with dire consequences as he reveals that a threat unlike any the group has faced before is on the rise, almost guaranteeing their defeat.

The basic premise of Dragon Ball Z has been giving fans one epic fight after another, and this set delivers in spades. The set flows from one battle to next, and while some are admittedly disappointing, there is more than enough entertainment to be had to counteract the negatives. This massive collection delivers loads of action with a gorgeous presentation, retaining the series original look and feel. Diehard fans should take note, this is the way the series is meant to be seen.

In a future where androids are the dominating presence and humans are left struggling for survival, a wandering story teller is kidnapped by the mysterious android Ibis and told the history of the machine’s rise through a series of stories. Though each story appears to be inconsequential to the other, they in fact reveal the earliest history of man’s interaction with machines. With every new tale, the story teller gains a little more insight into the true nature of the android and what her intentions are for sharing the stories with him.

Reading the Stories of Ibis left me with mixed feelings. The majority of the stories contained are previously published works from various years of the author Hiroshi Yamamoto’s career, with only two being specifically written for the book. As such, the quality varies. Between the stories are interludes, told from the story teller’s perspective as he discusses with Ibis the meaning behind each narrative. Truth be told, some are a chore to get through while others will breeze on by before you know it.

Needless to say, this is a book whose merit depends on the parts that make up the whole. Luckily, the good far outweighs the bad, combining to give readers a unique take on a dystopian future that really isn’t all that bleak.

The writing itself is a mixed bag. While the characters are interesting and well thought out, the descriptive nature leaves something to be desired. Much of the writing is simplistic, offering an almost shallow reading experience. It almost feels as if you’re reading the script for an anime.

On the whole, this book is recommended for young adults with an interest in sci-fi. Those looking for something deeper will want to look elsewhere.

When Mel Gibson as hardened cop Thomas Craven utters the words “I’ve got nothing left to lose,” he couldn’t have been more on point. After an eight year hiatus from a starring role in films, Gibson had something to prove Hollywood and himself. Despite achieving critical success from the Passion of the Christ, Gibson made headlines when his marriage disintegrated. Compounding matters further, with so many young stars and starlets on the rise, the once dominant actor was is in the unenviable position of proving that he still has what it takes to bring in the big bucks at the box office.

This perhaps explains why Edge of Darkness, a remake of a classic BBC series, strays from its quasi sci-fi roots and devolves into a simple revenge tale. In many ways it’s a smart move, as many of the ideas presented in the 1985 series would come off as hokey and confusing to today’s cinema goers. Gibson needed a role that allowed him to put a bit of himself into the role, for better or for worse because let’s face it; if you’ve followed the news in the last eight years, no one goes postal quite like Mel Gibson.

Staring as Thomas Craven, Gibson assumes the role once helmed by Bob Peck, a grizzled cop out for revenge against the men behind his daughter’s murder. While there is some conspiracy to be had, the film reveals the people responsible rather early, giving Gibson to go through the motions of reaffirming himself as an action star. While the original tended to lean more toward the inner workings of the government, filling each episode with political intrigue, the remake discards all that in favor of shoot outs and brutal brawls.

In truth, where Edge of Darkness lacks in story, Gibson more than makes up for it in his performance. Every scene he’s in, his agony is palpable as he homicidally blows through one suspect to another in his personal vendetta to avenge his daughter. Of course this means more emphasis on blood and action but there are enough heartfelt sequences of Craven reminiscing on happier times with his daughter peppered throughout to give the audience a breather in between kills.

Whether Edge of Darkness provides Gibson the vehicle needed to get back on track is still up in the air. Depending on who you ask, the answer varies. In any case, it can’t be denied that this is a return to form for the actor as he proves he’s still got the chops to be a leading man if Hollywood will let him.

There’s only five minutes remaining in the final showdown between the Deimon Devil Bats and the Hakushu Dinosaurs. As the clock ticks away the two teams trade positions, Sena, Hiruma, and Kurita struggle to find a way to power through the unmatched defense of Gao and Marco.

Afterward, the team decides to gather some info on their next opponents, the Teikoku Alexanders, touted as the strongest team in all of Japan. After getting caught sneaking in, they are surprised to find that they are more than welcome to study the Alexanders’ techniques. When questioning their over confidence, Sena and the others are shocked to find that not only is their top player the real Eyeshield 21, their entire team consists of the best athletes.

Eyeshield 21 at this point has grown into a superb series, with well developed characters, intense action, and touching humor. While the battle against the Dinosaurs was among the series finest, the look into the Alexanders roster ups the ante, as the team prepares for their toughest challenge to date. With the Christmas Bowl in their sights it would appear the series is prepping for an explosive conclusion. As a fan, I wouldn’t want it any other way.
