Municipal water treatment plants nationwide process more than 150 million gallons of wastewater every day. When the treated water is released into a river or ocean, it leaves behind more than four million tons of sludge, mostly burned or trucked away to landfills. That’s a lot of waste, and it’s expensive, costing as much as $200 million annually.

That’s where Micromidas comes in. They’ve figured out how to convert sludge into a usable product. “Literally, we are brewing plastic,” said John Bissel, Micromidas CEO. “It’s very similar to brewing beer or anything else.” It’s been known for a while that a chemical in wastewater can be used to make plastic, but the challenge has always been extracting and converting it at a competitive price compared to the source of most of America’s plastic – oil.

The breakthrough lies in Micromidas’ proprietary process. The company takes sludge, renders it down to a liquid resembling chicken broth, and applies a cocktail of designer bacteria microbes. The chemical reactions that follow change the liquid’s composition into a thicker product, which is then run through an extruding machine, producing plastic.

If the idea catches on, it could mean big business. Nearly five percent of the oil consumed in America, about 300 million barrels a year, goes into making plastic products like shopping bags and water bottles. Combined with reducing costs for wastewater treatment and the impact of sludge being transported and buried at landfills, plastic from sewage makes sense. “Taking wastewater sludge and turning it into a bioplastic is pretty nice,” said Michael Donahue, Sacramento Water Treatment Plant. “It’s a pretty good idea.”

Even so, there’s still one hurdle to clear – the stigma of plastic from poop. But don’t worry; their product will never become water bottles. “Realistically, we’re looking for tertiary packaging applications,” said Bissel. Tertiary refers to third-level packaging, like the layer of plastic surrounding a DVD player, the rings surrounding packs of bottles, or the wrap that secures products on pallets at big box stores around the country.

Other bioplastics are already on the market, but they're derived from plants and are generally more expensive than oil-based plastic. These products require land, fertilizer, and water. By comparison, Bissel says all his technology requires is a laboratory and ingredients unlikely to run out any time soon.

Micromidas’ product will hit markets next year, so we’ll soon find out if sustainable plastic stinks, or if it can come out smelling like roses.

<!--

So now the scientists are trying to use different sources of alternative energy at the same place and same time to generate power. Attempts are being made to combine two forms of external energy sources such as light and heat or light and vibration to generate external energy so that enough energy can be collected for practical use. Fujitsu Laboratories have now succeeded in using hybrid energy sources to generate power. Fujitsu Laboratories wants to provide this technology for commercial use by the year 2015.

Fujitsu Laboratories: Making power from two sources of energy
Fujitsu Laboratories are working extensively in this regard, and to generate electricity both from heat and light, they are creating a new hybrid energy harvesting device. Energy harvesting is the procedure used in accumulating energy from the environment. Later on that energy is transformed into electricity. Fujitsu is not doing something innovative. Work in this field was done by scientists earlier too. But hybrid energy could only be generated by combining separate devices and that proved costly so it was commercially unviable.

Reducing the cost
Now Fujitsu laboratories confirm that two separate devices are not needed to generate electricity from a hybrid source. How were they successful in reducing costs? They used organic materials for creating hybrid device. This lowers the cost, and the new technology is showing promise to convert energy from the environment to electricity. The device from Fujitsu Laboratories is just a one-piece device that catches energy from the most common form of energy available for large scale use.

The use of organic material
An organic material of high efficiency that can generate power from both photovoltaic and thermoelectric mode has been developed by Fujitsu Laboratories. This organic material can make power both from heat in thermoelectric mode and indoor lighting in photovoltaic mode. The production cost is very low because of the organic materials and the processing costs are very low. The device can be made to work as a thermoelectric generator or photovoltaic cell by changing the electrical circuit connecting P-type and N-type semiconductors.

<!--

Five years into the future, maybe not just video, but even form the recipient in the form of three-dimensional holograms that are emitted from the surface of the screen.

That is one of five forecasts of the investigators International Business Machines (IBM) Corp.. Some other ideas is a battery technology that can 'breathe', which only need to interact with the environment to collect kinetic energy. Moreover, they predict that innovation will be developed is a computer program that can show when and where congestion occurs, information systems environment through sensors installed in cars and cell phones, and the use of the power source from the blast of hot server computer.

The predictions are part of IBM's annual tradition to find the five ideas that technology can be applied in the next five years. For the largest computer services provider in the world like IBM, it is not a speculation. They are one of the few companies that invest in research projects long term. IBM has a research center in Almaden Research Center in San Jose, California.

"The list is open the window for development of IBM's innovation engine," said Josephine Cheng, Vice President IBM Almaden lab. Big screen, comes with a trackpad or trackball navigation, and the average comes with a Qwerty keypad.

The concept of a BlackBerry Empathy that carried Kiki Tang and Daniel Yoon from Art Center College of Design is much different from the concept design of the BlackBerry that exist today.

At first glance Empathy BlackBerry phone comes with a physical interface resembles a crystal and a unique form of biometric ring that serves to collect emotional data. It works when you touch with your friends via instant messaging (IM) and social networking services like Facebook, Twitter, and the like.

"As seen, this concept offers a touch-screen technology. Uniquely, antarpengguna connections displayed graphically, so that users are permitted to see who is connected with whom," said Kiki, one of the designers Empathy.

Each contact will have avatars, each circled the ring in two colors showing the emotional data. Of course, the color of the ring are influenced by emotions related contacts. For example, the colored ring that lies in part in the show's emotional before. While the outer ring indicates a person's emotional progress.

Another important feature is the Emotional Health Chart. This graph charts to monitor the health of a person emotionally in infinite time. One can see how an event, such as telephone calls, or receive a short message to affect the user's emotional. Happy, sad, angry, and so forth. If the graph shows someone is always unhappy, then maybe he is experiencing problems. If allowed, users can view graphs of other users as well.

The concept is really interesting. Although not yet known what kind of technology will support it. We're sure you were curious to see your mood in the ring, or to know your partner's mood when an event occurs. Let us wait whether this concept is really manifested by Research In Motion (RIM) or not.

<!--

However, when such services would be used in the Singapore Airlines aircraft, this may be shocking news. Moreover, the airline flight path through several cities in Indonesia.

The airline has signed a contract with OnAir NV to perform a network installation of wi-fi in the aircraft cabin, so passengers can access the internet during the trip. In addition, BTS also installed special for passengers also can make phone calls with her cell phone.

"This is not a movement that aims to increase revenue. Customers are looking forward to this service because the world today are interconnected," said Nick Ionides, a spokesman for Singapore Airlines. With this service, customers can use laptops, cell phones, or smartphones like Apple's iPhone and the BlackBerry during flight.

Internet services and mobile phones in aircraft is prohibited according to current regulations as they may interfere with the signal frequency of flights. However, with advances in technology, interference issues can be resolved and can be used in several types of aircraft. For Singapore Airlines, the new service will be provided starting 2011 in the aircraft type Airbus A340-500s and A380s and Boeing 777-300 ER.

The existence of this breakthrough makes Singapore Airlines as the first major airline in Asia to offer Internet connectivity in the air. Previously, the Emirates in Dubai in July, also plans to offer a similar service in 2012.

<!--

A white hearse walked slowly led the procession. Who could figure Microsoft is dead?

Make no mistake, this is not a funeral Microsoft employees or bosses. The Microsoft employee was walking toward a funeral "common enemy" them, ie iPhone.Tandanya, in recent hearse, some people seem to carry the large-sized replica of the iPhone.

Certainly not without reason if Microsoft employees are desperate to hold a theatrical action. Unique action that marked the completion of the making of Windows Phone 7 (WP7), Microsoft's latest mobile operating system. The Microsoft employee really hope their recent work that can displace or even bury the iPhone and Google's Android operating system fib.

Microsoft plans to release WP7 officially on 11 October. Furthermore, the handset that uses this operating system will begin to enter the market in November 2010. Some manufacturers such as Samsung, LG, and HTC Corp. are ready to produce phones based on these WP7.

Many analysts argue, the launch Microsoft WP7 be the last chance to catch up Apple and Google that have market endeavor smart phone operating systems (smartphones) in recent years.

Since long, the analysts are surprised to see how Microsoft and Windows Mobile eliminated from the competition smartphone operating system. According to comScore research data, this time, Microsoft's market share is less than 12 percent in the segment of the smartphone operating system. This means that they are in fourth place after the BlackBerry made by Research in Motion (RIM), Apple, and Google.

Microsoft exclusion in the mobile market and the delays they anticipate the emergence of new products such as iPad has made Microsoft's stock price plummeted. This year alone, Microsoft's stock has plummeted 20 percent.

So, does this new product will succeed? Of course, consumers around the world who will decide.

If we look at a prototype that was shown WP7 Microsoft employees, apparently, this new operating system is far more sophisticated than previous generations. In addition to feature a touchscreen, this new software also integrates with the Zune music player software Microsoft fib.

But, in addition to product features, in order to succeed, Microsoft also had the full support of the mobile phone manufacturers. The problem, both Samsung, LG, and HTC have offered products based on Android.

"We'll see how much support phone vendors to Microsoft because this is what makes Android a success. But, if you already have the iPhone and Android based phones, do we still need another phone?" The failure of Nintendo Co. Ltd. launched the newest toy gacoan, Nintendo 3DS, to the market this year directly to make the performance of one of the world's largest toy producer console was dropped.

According to Satoru Iwata, president of Nintendo Co. Ltd., the company predicted would bear the loss of up to 2 billion yen during the six month.

One of the main causes of the slow Nintendo's three-dimensional presence in the market due to a delay of the production process. In addition, the strengthening of the yen helped aggravate the condition of the sale of Japanese products, including Nintendo.

If Nintendo can deliver the Nintendo 3DS at the end of this year, this product will compete directly with games made by Sony Corp. and Microsoft plan would launch his latest product at the same time. You see, launched at the end of the year is the right time because the market is already looking forward to the presence of the latest gaming products.

To be sure, Nintendo will still launch 3DS. Precisely in February next year in the Japanese market, and in March specifically for the American market. Products worth 25,000 yen 12,000 yen more expensive than the Nintendo DS product, can display three-dimensional images without the need to wear glasses in three dimensions.

<!--

This compact ultra-portable computers generally come with an optional optical drive. That is, users who need to buy the drive separately.

Samsung SE-S084D is intended to meet the above requirements. Users only need to connect the USB cable into the device and port on the netbooks, for example, the netbook has been able to directly use the dvd writer.

In the connecting cable, Samsung also provides an additional USB connector that serves as a backup if the USB port on the computer can not supply sufficient amounts of power that causes the drive can not be used or the power shortage during combustion.

The method used to embed a tray loading CD or DVD. To open the tray, users can simply touch or mencolekkan finger on the cover drive. After the disc is inserted, Samsung says, about 190 milliseconds later, the data can be accessed.

If connected to a video device that supports USB, an external optical drive can also be directly used. For example, if you want to see the film through the projector, if your projector supports input via USB, then stay put DVD movies into this drive, connect to a projector, is completed.

When tested, when used to write to DVD-R media, Samsung SE-S084D can write with an average speed of 5.98 x. When writing to DVD-R DL media, he wrote velocity reaches 3.75 x and when writing to CD media, the average write speed of this drive reached 18.87 x.

There is no problem when writing or reading to a media DVD-R or CD-R. Literacy drive is pretty good. However, when writing to DVD-R DL media, it seems Samsung SE-S084D little obstacles. Similarly, when examined with Surface Scan inherent property of Nero 9, the results show there is a part of the offerings that were given the category Bad.

This problem may be solved by the newer firmware later. Fortunately, Samsung's Firmware Live Update feature on this drive. Condition, the computers that use the SE-S084D DVD Writer must be connected to the Internet.

<!--

If eco-friendly robots can take over and clean all the mess it will be good for marine life and humans too. MIT is developing Seaswarm robots that will utilize a special substance to absorb and collect oil from the sea surface. If everything turns out well, these robots can be used commercially in a year. These robots work best collectively. They can detect the oil spills on their own and then convey the message to their robotic group and chalk out a strategy among themselves to clean the mess.

Design of a Seaswarm:
Assaf Biderman supervised this project at MIT. He is also the associate director of MIT’s Senseable City Lab. According to him the $20,000 robots will be put on exhibition in Venice, Italy. The Seaswarm robots give the appearance of a conveyor belt of a treadmill. The conveyer belt contains material which the MIT guys call a paper towel for oil spills. It can absorb up to 20 times its weight in oil. This belt floats on the sea surface and connected to an ice cooler. When it turns the belt pushes the robots frontward and absorbs the oil with the aid of a nanomaterial. This nanomaterial is designed to attract oil and repel water. Biderman explains it as a carpet rolling on the surface of the water.

How Seaswarm works:
After soaking up the oil on the sea surface the robot can burn it on the spot or it can leave the oil in a bag which can be collected later. The heater is located on the “ice cooler” part of the body. The oil stored in the bag can be reused. According to Biderman, robots are good team players. They coordinate with one another with the help of GPS location data. They devise a strategy to clean up the mess in an effective way.

Advantages of Seaswarm:
Cost effective: If the Seaswarm robots are being deployed at the oil spill site they prove to be relatively cheap, quick and effective at cleaning up oil spills. Otherwise cleaning oil spills is quite costly as it need big ships and trained crews in large numbers. Biderman is of the opinion that if the Seaswarm robots would have been used at the Deepwater Horizon oil disaster, the robots would have cleaned up the oil in two months. The cost of the whole operation would have amounted to $100 million to $200 million. If we care to look at the statistics about 800 skimming boats were in service to clean up the Deepwater Horizon oil disaster. It would have needed only 5,000 to 10,000 of MIT’s autonomous robots to complete the same task.

Eco Friendly: The Seaswarm robots use clean and green solar energy. They need only 100 watts of power, or about that of a bright light bulb for their operations. You can utilize them on sea for months and they won’t ask for overtime for working incessantly.

Stability: Biderman says, “Because it (conveyor belt) adheres to the surface of the water, it cannot capsize,” he said, “So it can withstand quite severe weather. Imagine this like a leaf that lands on the surface of the water and moves with the waves and the currents and cannot be flipped over.” The robots can work under extreme conditions and rough weather. Biderman said MIT’s oil-sopping robot would be most effective in situations like the recent oil disaster, where oil is spread out.

Damage can be confined to a smaller area: Biderman shares his opinion, “Ideally, when spillage happens, the best thing to do is to contain it right where the spillage occurs. But quite often the oil goes out of containment, and this is where this technology would be most effective.”

<!--

"This test works by detect the molecular genetic level in the blood, molecules called microRNA (MIR), which also can detect people at risk of heart attack or problems with blood vessels." Told by Dr. Manuel Mayr, research leader at the University of London King.

Diabetes is a disease that can snatch the vision, the kidneys, even the heart. A disease that has killed thousands of people. Nevertheless, many people who just shrugged when asked about the possibility of this disease because their symptoms can indeed invisible.

World Health Organization (WHO) and International Diabetes Federation estimates more than 50 percent of people with undiagnosed type 2 diabetes. They are generally new diabetes discovered during treatment for other diseases. The majority of patients with diabetes come to the doctor had brought a pile of complications.

London scientists this invention can be used as reference precautions for patients who have the possibility of diabetes.

<!--

This then makes the skin loses the ability to be free from defects. From this early formation of wrinkles, which if left unchecked would disrupt the performance. Besides age, there are four factors that trigger wrinkle face uninvited.

1. Cigarette
Experts agree, there is a relationship between cigarette to the accelerated aging process. Not only the cigarette smoke, nicotine is smoked by a reduced blood flow to the skin. When blood flow is reduced, the skin nutrient deficiencies. This then makes the regeneration of skin cells do not go perfectly, which is followed by the appearance of wrinkles, wrinkles in the face. How to overcome that is not to be active or passive smokers.

2. Genetic
In certain people, the emergence of wrinkles faster apparently inherited. So if history is present in your families, most likely the wrinkles will be formed ahead of time. Quite difficult to find a solution for avoiding wrinkles in the face. But you can not keep dry skin by always using a moisturizer.

3. The skin is too white
Maybe you've heard, darker skin will look younger longer. Why, melamine dark-skinned people more numerous and dense, melamine, besides as a pigment the skin, also serve to protect the skin from ultraviolet radiation. How to avoid is either white or black owners, still need a sunscreen cream off an attack to ultraviolet A and B.

4. Sun exposure
Ultraviolet light, particularly ultraviolet A can freely penetrate the skin through collagen. When collagen is damaged, your skin loses its patron. To avoid this do not forget to use sunscreen cream every time outdoors.

<!--

IBM's answer that question by launching a new processor called the z196.

Processor that is claimed to be the fastest processor in the world can 'run' with clock speeds up to 5.2 GHz. Imagine how much heat the processor.

Previously, AMD Phenom II X6 has a clock speed of up to 3 GHz. Intel Core 2 Duo E8700 works at a speed of 3.5 GHz. In fact, Tom's Hardware had time to refine the project 5 GHz clock-speed processors, with liquid nitrogen cooling system.

However, this time the processor Z196 does not require liquid nitrogen for cooling assistance. This four-core processors using 45 nanometer processing technology, containing up to 1.4 billion transistors in a cross-sectional area of 512 square mm.

Claimed to be able to handle more than 50 billion instructions per second computing. Processors of this zEnterprise class reportedly has cost the fund more than U.S. $ 1.5 billion.

As quoted from TechIT site, IBM's research department has collaborated with some of his clients during the three years to realize the creation of this proseseor.

However, this processor would certainly not we meet at the Alienware gaming laptops or other consumer laptops, because these processors will only be present on the mainframe computers used by large clients like banks, telco companies, as well as manufacturing industries.

The plan of this processor will begin to be marketed by IBM, commencing 10 September.

<!--

Now comes the snake robot that can be wrapped around trees like a real snake.

Robot named Snakebot made by Biorobotics Lab at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), Pittsburgh, United States. Snakebot able to coil around themselves on poles, trees and walking into the pipe vertically.

Snakebot a snaking run even able to shake its tail in the tree, looking around him through the head contains a camera and even more amazing snakebot able to sing the national anthem of the U.S. 'Star-Spangled Banner' that made him get the nickname 'Uncle Sam'.

Snakebot robot apparently has been used in disaster training and are expected to someday be able to search and rescue operation in the field condition which does not allow people to enter it.

Modular robot is built from segments of sensors and actuators that enable it to alter the length and easy to be assembled again.

Researchers at CMU noted that in the experiment to climb trees, new Snakebot can climb on tree trunks with a certain width.

"The investigators worked to design, build and program a robot. He got the idea from the Japanese art of paper folding. The concept of a cruise ship is changing the playing style of paper folding machines for speed, thanks to innovations in the deck are multifunctional, and has folding wings.

When the state closed, compact and aerodynamic design allows the vessel to achieve optimal speed. But when docked, the form of luxury stretched to create a luxurious living room complete with four cabins below. There is also a spiral staircase to the two shaded hammocks on the roof.

In addition, the deck also provides a pool play and three-deck lounge that can rotate up to 360 degrees. So that the guests can enjoy the entire edge of the ocean view.

Fabio Federici innovative design concept was successfully won the Millennium Yacht Design Award. Federici said, the key is to create a yacht that is not conventional by combining speed and luxury.

He added, "I am inspired by the rigid forms of stealth aircraft. Then I got the idea from the main bridge conversion. Then I saw similarities with the origami models.

<!--

The main objective is to develop the interface of three dimensional (3D) and virtual reality displays on existing technology, and possible development of 3D holographic images for smart phones.

With this technology, the phone will be capable of transmitting 3D holographic image of the person who was talking on the phone, which has just happened in science fiction films.

"3D and virtual worlds great potential to revolutionize the way people use mobile phones," said Mike tune, Strategic Alliances and Partnerships Director, Nokia, told Computerworld site.

One of the initial applications to be developed, is a mobile virtual control panel to control light switch and heating at home.

According to Heikki Huomo, director of the Center for Internet Excellence, University of Oulu Finland, this paper is not intended to create a 3D experience that can only be enjoyed by the special glasses, because the phone screen will not meet the physical requirements that owned a large 3D screen.

Another possibility of this application, according Huomo, create social networks in a virtual world for mobile phones that use GPS and location information of users. "This will be the 'killer app' or at least is a success," said Heikki Huomo.

This research center will be supported by about two dozen researchers who will work at least for three years for this project brewing.

Director of Intel Lab Europe, Martin Curley said that the focus of this research is the development of open source software that will complement Intel's chips besutan.

According to Jack Gold, principal analyst at J. Gold Associates, a research center is an early opportunity for Nokia and Intel to develop an operating system MeeGo.

3D can become such an important requirement for a mobile device sized width, such as tablet computers, or at least smart phone.

<!--
