Church of Scientology International responds to Debbie Cook

The real story is the explosive worldwide growth of the Church of Scientology.

Since January 2011, the Church has opened 7 new Ideal Churches of Scientology: in Melbourne; Moscow; Inglewood and Sacramento, California; St. Paul, Minnesota; Tampa, Florida; and just this past weekend in Cincinnati, Ohio.

In the past 5 years, the Church has additionally opened 26 new Ideal Churches of Scientology in cities as diverse as London, Rome, Brussels, Quebec, Hamburg and all over the United States. In 2012, there are an additional 14 new Churches of Scientology scheduled for Grand Opening, including our spiritual mecca in Florida—a 375‐thousand square foot facility to minister to Scientologists from all over the world.

Additionally, in Los Angeles, in 2009 the Church established the largest and most state‐of‐the‐art all‐digital publishing house on Earth, dedicated to the production of our Founder’s scriptures. Since then, the facility has produced and disseminated over 97 million books and lectures (on compact disc) world over.

In 2010 the Church further established the largest printing and manufacturing plant in the U.S. solely dedicated to the production of humanitarian programs and materials. Consequently, the Church’s Truth About Drugs and United for Human Rights programs are now reaching tens of millions each year.

All of this expansion is date coincident with the removal of Ms. Cook and a few other select individuals that make up their posse of apostates—a fact of which they are well aware and extremely bitter. Ms. Cook failed to tell the actual story:

* That she left the Church more than 4 years ago;

* That she departed with substantial consideration;

* That when she burned through her money she began threatening the Church and demanded “quid pro quo” to continue honoring her agreements;

* That she lied about her status to Scientology parishioners in an attempt to profit financially from their goodwill;

* That she had joined a heretical (squirrel) group.

Ms. Cook and her husband were sued by the Church for violation of their legal covenants. It is evident that their purpose in violating the agreement was to extort the Church for more money. Her new, sensationalistic and revisionist stories of “experiences” in the Church are belied by all of the above, as well as numerous written and video statements by her which are in the Church’s possession. Any further statements Ms. Cook or her husband make in violation of their agreements will only increase the damages they ultimately will have to pay.

Ms. Cook and her husband are simply bitter, defrocked apostates, attempting to spread falsehoods for personal gain. Both Ms. Cook and her husband are expelled from the Church, are prohibited from calling themselves Scientologists or ever again entering one of our Churches.

Response to “Today Tonight”, Channel 7

Download Here

Shane Kelsey moved to live with his mother, a member of the Church of Scientology religious order, the Sea Organization (or Sea Org), after his father Adrian Kelsey sent him from Mexico to the United Kingdom on a plane as a 6‐year old.

Over the next 11 years, Shane’s mother brought him up with no financial support from his father. In addition, there was very little communication to Shane from his father.

The Sea Org, which Shane later joined, comprises the most dedicated Scientologists — individuals who have devoted their lives in voluntary service to their religion. Adrian had also been a Sea Org member in South Africa during the 1980s.

Shane consulted with his mother and requested to take part in Scientology’s Rehabilitation Project Force (RPF) program, a voluntary religious program of spiritual rehabilitation to provide a ‘second chance’ to those failing to fulfill their ecclesiastical responsibilities as Sea Org members.

The RPF involves a free religious commitment by the individual to a spiritual discipline. Not everyone can do the program. One has to be accepted into it after proper consideration and evidence that it is the correct and needed action for that person. The alternative is dismissal from the religious order. Shane could have left and gone to live with his father, but he didn’t want to, due to his past experiences.

Shane knew this program could help him and that it was run with discipline and no distractions, so all attention was on resolving his personal issues. He expressed, both in writing and verbally, to numerous people in the Church that he really wanted to do the program and applied to do so.

The program consists of a period of 5‐hours study and religious counseling a day and other team work. It is very therapeutic and is conducted with set discipline so participants complete their studies, with maximum personal benefit. The program is focused on the individual and discovering the reasons behind why they are having trouble. It is a journey of personal realization so that an individual can take charge of
their life and change and improve conditions.

Anyone on the program is there because they want to be there and they have to obtain full approval to do the program before they are accepted into it. There is a period of induction where they are educated on the program itself. They are completely free to withdraw at any time during induction or later.

After a successful period of personal counseling, study and helping others, Shane stated that he achieved his goal of fully dealing with the reasons behind his compulsive stealing and that he would never fall back into doing that again. He had many gains and positive successes from doing the program.

When Shane left the Church in late 2010, he simply got his bag and walked out the door of the Church and travelled to Queensland. The Church is very open, with easy access. No one followed him, he was not called. People can come and go with ease.

The only person who contacted him afterwards was his mother who was very concerned for his welfare. In June 2011, Shane contacted the Church in Sydney to ask for assistance with completing his Australian residency to get work. This assistance was given. Shane’s mother has remained in close contact with him and saw him last December when he visited for a concert.

After Shane left the Sea Org in December 2010, he wrote to his mother:

“I still love and respect everyone there and the Sea Org. everything I gained out of the RPF is still with me and I am holding good.”

It is very sad that Shane has changed his story about his time in the Church with claims that are simply fabrications. His father, Adrian Kelsey resigned from the Church in 2009. He now works with a group of former members to harm their former Church. The Church has provided considerable documentary evidence which has proved the falsity of their allegations.

Background: Scientology, which means ʺknowing how to know,ʺ is a religion based on the works of American philosopher and humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard (1911‐86). The first Church was established In Los Angeles in 1954. Today there are more than 10,000 Scientology Churches, missions and groups in 167 nations. Scientology was recognized as a bonafide religion by Australia’s High Court in 1983.

Scientology Volunteer Ministers Overview 2012

In 1973 the Scientology Volunteer Minister program commenced, with volunteer clergy trained in exact tools and techniques in order to apply them to help others in the community in need, including the fundamentals of interpersonal relations, solving drug abuse, resolving educational and study difficulties through to resolving marital problems and conflicts.

The aim of the Volunteer Ministers is to bring compassion, decency and mutual respect in all parts of the world through the practical tools of Scientology.

We help and deliver to people of all denominations and work to train leaders of other groups who can then take care of their own groups members.
We change no person’s religion. We provide common sense tools based on Scientology that work and get tangible results to improve lives.

The value of these services has been recognized by politicians, police, the military, other relief agencies, civic authorities and most importantly the man in the street. In the words of the Mayor of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, whose city had been hit by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005, “I was very happy when more than 900 of your Church Volunteer Ministers arrived in my city from all over the world and became a major force in bringing physical and spiritual help to those in need.”

The Church’s more than 200,000 Volunteer Ministers are an active force in disaster relief efforts worldwide.

In all, the Volunteer Ministers have helped more than 10.8 million people in the past seven years.

The Church of Scientology funds all projects directly from within our organisation and from the generous support and involvement of our parishioners. The Church has not requested government funding for any of our social betterment and community programs.

As part of this program, the Church has developed a disaster response team which specialises in helping during times of international upheaval and catastrophic events.

The volunteers provide a willing and highly organised team to support existing services and do undertake any actions needed requested by governments or other community organisations.

Australian Scientologists have organised and participated in disaster response actions at home, in Asia Pacific and the United States.

Initiatives Australian volunteers have been involved in include:

Two decades of effective drug education - 2012

The Church of Scientology has for many decades conducted drug education campaigns. Scientologists are drug-free and as such understand the vital importance of full education, in empowering youth to make fully informed choices to stay away from drugs.

The cost to the Australian community of drug and alcohol abuse is considerable – around 23.5 billion per year.

Rather than just saying no, our approach has been to educate on physical and mental effects of drugs.

From our experience with talking to literally several hundred thousand youth on the streets, it is clear that drug use does not equal knowledge about drugs and that education can make all the difference. This has been one of our most concerted campaigns of the last two decades.

These programs are run by our dedicated team of volunteers and through regular donations from Scientologists.

The Church sponsored anti-drug programs have touched the lives of over 600 million people worldwide.

Activities have involved 79 countries, with over 22 million educational booklet and 30 million fliers distributed to promote the anti-drug message. This has also involved over 280,000 billboards and posters to reinforce this positive message.

The Church of Scientology raises donations and pays for all of the materials and also provides grants for other projects such as producing a 90 minute documentary featuring former drug users, telling their stories of using drugs called The Truth About Drugs Real People Real stories.

This is also provided free of charge to anyone who requests it on-line.

In Australia, we have also established a Drug Free Ambassadors program, which provides free materials about the dangers of drugs to individuals and within communities. The Drug Free Ambassadors has worked for close to 17 years providing drug education material to youth throughout the country and has distributed close to 2 million drug education fliers and booklets – most through one-on-one handout by volunteers in most major cities.

Other Australian-based anti-drug activities organised by the Church include:

1	2.5 million anti-drug education fliers and booklets distributed at markets, fairs and street drug education events covering marijuana, ecstasy, ice and painkillers.

2	300,000 Australian youths have taken a drug-free pledge to dedicate them to help themselves and others to remain or become drug free. Anti-drug education booklets are distributed on a weekly basis in public place to youth and adults providing them factual literature on the long and short term effects of drugs. All items are distributed for free and are funded by Scientologists because living a drug-free life is a very important issue to them.

3	Translation of anti- drug education materials in Japanese, Chinese and Indonesian and Korean to enable the drug education information to be distributed to Australians of non-English speaking backgrounds and to some neighbouring countries which are known to be sources of drug imports into Australia.

4	The Church has made anti-drug education materials available for free down-load in 20 languages including new languages now being translated of Samoan, Tagalog and Malaysian. This assists in enhancing Australia’s bonds of friendship with its neighbours in Asia Pacific. Scientologists from Australia are also engaged in delivering anti-drug educational training to teachers in the Philippines and Indonesia, so that teachers are equipped with informative materials to properly educate youth on the effects of drugs.

Australian Scientology Volunteer Ministers lead an international relief team bringing succour to the survivors of the Great East Japan Earthquake

The first observation teams from the Scientology International Disaster Response team arrived in Watari and Kesennuma on 12 March and assessed what assistance was most needed. Volunteer Ministers in Kesennuma then immediately helped deliver needed supplies to shelters, including milk for babies, nappies, food, water, etc.

The Volunteer Ministers (VMs) have continued their work in 10 cities in Miyagi and Iwate Prefectures helping with a diverse range of activities - from delivering supplies and cleaning streets, assisting to recover personal photographs, to arranging bicycles and forklifts and entertainment at the shelters. Additionally they have provided one-on-one spiritual care called “Assists” to those who have lost their homes and families, enabling them to sleep better and recover from the emotional trauma and shock. Sometimes it is just listening to their story and understanding what they have been through. With so many affected the victims had not wanted to put their burdens onto their fellow survivors, so have been thankful to talk to someone trained to listen and help them to recover and pick up the pieces of their lives.

So far, the Volunteer Ministers have provided personal help to more than 18,000 people in total at more than 100 shelters, in addition to doing whatever was needed by the officials running the recovery operations. No job has been too small or too hard and with the resilient spirit of the Japanese, they are helping to rebuild the communities. The help of the Volunteer Ministers is very much appreciated by the people who live in shelters and they will continue to provide assistance for as long as needed.

Church of Scientology Melbourne Opens Ideal Scientology Church

January 2011 marks a new era for the Scientology religion in Australia with the opening of its new Melbourne Church.

Thousands of Scientologists, dignitaries and guests from across the nation celebrated a milestone—the opening of the first Ideal Scientology Church in Australia.

Auntie Joy Murphy Wandin, senior elder of the Wurundjeri people, opened the dedication with the traditional “Welcome to Country” ceremony, welcoming Scientologists to the lands of her ancestors.

Scientologist, Melbourne native and award-winning singer and songwriter Kate Ceberano performed a moving rendition of her original composition “This Song is You,” written in honour of the occasion and the heritage of the city and all that Australia holds dear.

Mr. David Miscavige, Chairman of the Board of Religious Technology Center and ecclesiastical leader of the Scientology religion, dedicated the new Church of Scientology of Melbourne.

In tribute to the significance of the occasion Mr. David Miscavige, Chairman of the Board Religious Technology Center and ecclesiastical leader of the Scientology religion, travelled to Melbourne from the United States to officiate at the dedication. He acknowledged the long parade of accomplishments by Australian Scientologists that culminated in the new Church.

“It is my honour to join you this evening and commemorate a moment that will live on in history for a long time to come. Not that you haven’t loomed large in history before, not that you haven’t triumphed over great adversity in years gone by, not that you didn’t stand firm for the dignity of Man, and not that you didn’t indeed uphold the God-given rights of all religions all over this world.

“But having triumphed today in the name of our religion, you just flipped this planet all the way around so that Melbourne now sits on top of the globe. And that’s what it means to build an Ideal Org beneath the Southern Cross.”

Mr. Miscavige also spoke of Melbourne’s hallowed place in Scientology history, noting that Founder L. Ron Hubbard himself came to Melbourne in November 1959 to deliver a series of lectures to its founding Scientology community. As Mr. Miscavige explained: “Those November 1959 lectures marked a turn in the path and a rise in the road, from which the whole panorama of human potential came into focus. Whence, the highest levels of Scientology and the whole vista of spiritual enlightenment and freedom.

“So you wonder where you stand in the history and legacy of LRH and our religion as a whole? None of it would exist were it not for what began right here—and that’s both the heritage and legacy, which is indelibly woven through the brickwork of your new Ideal Org of Melbourne.”

Melbourne has long held importance for the Scientology religion. Within months of L. Ron Hubbard authoring Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health in 1950, the first Dianetics group in Australia was formed here and in 1955 the first Scientology Church in Australia opened in this city.

Australia similarly long held a place near to L. Ron Hubbard’s heart, beginning with his service “Down Under” as a United States Naval Officer through the first days of World War II. Principally stationed in Brisbane, but also operating from Melbourne, then Lieutenant Hubbard was charged with organising relief efforts for Allied troops trapped in the Philippines. He also proudly served with Australian gunnery units for the defence of Brisbane.

As Scientology Founder, L. Ron Hubbard returned to Australia in 1959 to deliver two historic lecture series: The Melbourne Congress and the 1st Melbourne Advanced Clinical Course. Remembered today for his delineation of the highest spans of the Scientology Bridge, Mr. Hubbard’s Australian lectures will forever hold a cherished place in the religion.

Today, the Melbourne Scientology Church is the first Ideal Church of Scientology Organisation in Australia, realising Mr. Hubbard’s vision for what Scientology can provide for its congregation and community.

The Church now stands on the site of the 19th century estate of Robert McCracken, leading businessman and founder of the legendary Essendon Bombers football team. After the turn of the 20th century, this building became the home of Mercy Teachers’ College, later part of the Catholic University. The original name of the estate is “Ailsa” for Ailsa Craig, an island off the west coast of Scotland from where the McCracken family sailed more than 150 years ago.

Melbourne’s Public Information Centre offers more than 450 informational films illustrating Scientology beliefs, the life and legacy of Founder L. Ron Hubbard, and the full array of Church-sponsored social betterment and community outreach programs.

The Chapel seats hundreds, the library contains all Church Scripture. Course rooms and counselling rooms accommodate Scientologists from throughout Victoria. Seminar rooms, film rooms and Life Improvement Course Rooms make effective solutions to the most pressing challenges people face today easily available to Scientologists and non-Scientologists alike. Workspaces for volunteers stand open and ready for use by parishioners and the community.

Under the guidance of Mr. David Miscavige, Chairman of the Board Religious Technology Center and ecclesiastical leader of the Scientology religion, 23 Ideal Churches have been dedicated and opened since 2003, including those in world cultural capitals—The National Church of South Africa in Johannesburg; the National Church of Scientology of Spain in Madrid; the Church of Scientology of New York, just off Times Square; the Church of Scientology of London, located in the epicentre of the city; the Church of Scientology of Italy in Rome; the Church of Scientology of Washington, D.C., just blocks from the White House on “Church Row”; the National Church of
Scientology Mexico, in Mexico City; and the Church of Scientology of Berlin, near the Brandenburg Gate. Another 60 Ideal Churches are in design, planning or construction phases.

The Scientology religion was founded by author and philosopher L. Ron Hubbard. The first Church of Scientology was formed in the United States in 1954 and has today expanded to more than 9,000 Churches, Missions and affiliated groups, with millions of members in 165 countries.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the character of what was once a turn-of-the-century bicycle factory has been transformed into a unique blend of old and new, its four-story atrium and original façade still intact. With attention also given to 21st century detail, the restored building will also be LEED certified (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design).

The Church of Scientology International has been working for the past six years on a program to acquire new buildings for its regional Churches around the world. Launched in 2004 by Scientology ecclesiastical leader Mr. David Miscavige, the aim of the program is to establish each Church in premises ideally suited for its many and varied religious services as well as its community outreach activities. So far, 19 such ideal Churches have opened, eight of them in unique historic buildings, with more on the horizon.

“These Churches have already been in their cities for many years and their buildings need to be large enough to accommodate all their activities including a chapel, rooms for the study of our theology and introductory courses for new people and individual spiritual counseling rooms,” said Church of Scientology International spokesman, Tommy Davis.

Far from a Sunday-only meeting place, Churches of Scientology hum with activity seven days a week. In addition to common congregational services such as weddings, funerals, naming ceremonies for newborn children and Sunday service, parishioners can study days and evenings as well as receive the religion’s unique form of one-on-one religious counseling, participate in the Scientology Purification Program (a precise and closely supervised religious regimen that addresses barriers to spiritual gain) and take part in community betterment planning and activities, sponsored and initiated by the Church.

In May the Nashville, Tennessee Church of Scientology historic building took top honors in the city’s 35th Annual Preservation Awards for meeting all safety standards while preserving the beauty and grace of the 1898 building, which opened last year. Built just two years after the famous Grand Ole Opry in a similar style, its features include red brick walls, original doors and hardwood floors, 14-foot ceilings and an unusual three-floor atrium crowned with a glass cupola.

Last January, the Church opened the Belgium branch of the Churches of Scientology of Europe, an 88,000 square-foot early 20th century historic structure in the heart of Brussels. In October 2009, the Founding Church of Scientology in Washington, DC completed renovation of its seven-story, 49,000-square-foot historic building by architect Appleton P. Clark, Jr., half a mile from the White House. And another historic Church property fully restored in 2009 is the 1926 Mediterranean Revival-style Fort Harrison building in Clearwater, Florida.

Other cities with historic buildings now home to Scientology Churches include: San Francisco, California; London, England; Tampa, Florida; and Buffalo, New York. The Church has also acquired historic buildings that are in pre-construction stages in Detroit, Michigan; Chicago, Illinois; Boston, Massachusetts; Portland, Oregon; Montreal, Canada; and Manchester, England.

“We take a lot of pride and care in adapting and rehabilitating our historic buildings,” said Davis. “The result is truly unique as these new Churches exemplify our religion and are dynamically practical and aesthetic, and enable us to practice the full range of Scientology services as laid out by Scientology Founder L.
