We are well south of Boston but the hush of it all has spread even this far. My husband couldn't take the commuter rail into town because the MBTA has shut down, and anyway, his office is in the heart of the city and is closed. We are all of us sheltering in place in one way or another, holding our breath and hoping for resolution.

When you have a child, you do your best to shield them from it all. You promise that the world is a safe place. You hold hands. You walk away from the tv and the computer and you step into the woods and built little fairy houses. Safe as houses. That's what we want to be.

May Nothing Evil Pass This Door

May nothing evil cross this door,
and may ill fortune never pry
about these windows; may the roar
and rain go by.

By faith made strong, the rafters will
withstand the battering of the storm.
This hearth, though all the world grow chill,
will keep you warm.

Peace shall walk softly through these rooms,
touching our lips with holy wine,
till every casual corner blooms
into a shrine.

With laughter drown the raucous shout,
and, though these sheltering walls are thin,
may they be strong to keep hate out
and hold love in.

Another sign of spring? Muddy children.

Funnily enough, the children were nowhere to be found in the wildflower garden - but remnants of their presence were scattered all over the path. I hope they just went home barefoot and half-naked; otherwise I'm going to feel very guilty about not checking the grounds more carefully.

On Sunday we went to Fenway Park. It was a near perfect day, with good friends and a great game. I brought along Ethel, my faithful old P90, and noodled around with crowd shots. Just black and white random photographs with a camera that fits into my purse, noisy and full of humanity.

If we had gone to the game on Monday, we'd've walked up the finish line of the Marathon and cheered for the runners.

That's what you do. Marathon weekend, if you're in town you watch for the runners with their tell-tale shirts and gear and you wish them well. It feels like a party in Boston, with the energy so high.

And Boston's not a big city, so we all know someone who's running, or who's volunteering at the finish line or hanging out on the sidelines somewhere along the route to cheer a loved one on. And we get to share it with runners from all over the world. It's pretty damn cool.

And we've all walked in and out of those stores on Boylston and hung out on the steps at the Copley Branch of the Boston Public Library. We've walked across the finish line after the race has been run but before the street gets opened up to traffic again.

And it's all so incredibly close to home. I look at these pictures from the day before and I wonder about all the people. Are they ok? We were ok then, on that beautiful afternoon. The sun broke through and the clouds were fat, luscious cottonballs lolling on a blue sky. Clay Buchholz came thisclose to a no hitter while we ate Fenway franks and peanuts and the wave made its way around the park to the delight of the kids I was surrounded by. We were ok. And the world felt safe.
Or in this case, crocuses from the debris field of Percy Mann's car.

I really do hope I'm not the only crazy person who lies down in the yard at the Mann House and communes with the explosion of crocuses in the spring... but I bet it's a pretty small club.

We had a beautiful and warm spring day for my birthday on Monday - but it's gone back to chilly brittle sunshine for the rest of the week. Still, there is sunshine and there are flowers and that is a glorious thing!
But wait a minute... that's a drain pipe. Where are the pedestrians?

Well, you have to look closely, because they're shy. But if you're gentle - and fast - you might catch one -

The frogs are a sure sign of spring, and they have been busily using their drainpipe crossing to reach the marshy areas where they prefer to lay their eggs. And just as gently as you caught her, set her free - so she can continue with her springtime activities!

I think I'd be too nervous to enjoy the view. I wouldn't be able to shake the feeling of being on stilts, like the clown in a parade with impossibly spindly legs.

I've seen this all over town along the coastline - decks that have been pulled free of their houses, lying on sand and rocks in awkward repose. Staircases, too - just sort of lying on their sides, leading to nowhere. This deck was on a house on Peggotty Beach before the winter roared in and pulled it loose.

Peggotty Beach is walking distance from the bustle of Scituate Harbor. Come summer it will dotted with brightly colored towels and plastic pails and shovels and a thousand footprints will trace every possible path from parking lot to water and in between.

But in the cold light of March after a long and stormy winter season, it seems forlorn and lonely, battered and bruised.

The entrance to Peggotty Beach shows the signs of a rough winter. Those blue rails on either side of the trash can are bike racks - and the "No Dumping sign" is fairly buried by all the sand that has blown towards the parking lot and away from the beach. Thanks to my friend Jennifer D. for the reminder to go check it out! I have some more photos to share from the beach this week, where a lot of the homes took some pretty good hits in all the storms.

I'm also trying out a few new posting times over the next several weeks, to see what works best for both me and for followers. Feedback on that welcome!
No, really.

Not quite the glorious return to color I was hoping for - but under the snow, the flowers grow... don't they?

A year ago today, we were on the beach in shorts and soaking up the sunshine.

Today, we had a two hour delay for the schools as we were pelted with snow, sleet, sneet and icy cold rain. It's been a long cold lonely winter, my friends. And I think we've just about had enough.

I've been doing a little spring cleaning in anticipation of the sunshine and warmth that is inching ever closer... I've been going through my archives and sharing photos that didn't make it onto the blog when they were originally taken. The extended monochromatic theme will conclude on this last day of winter, so we can greet the first day of spring with a return to glorious color. Maybe. Anyway, we'll do our best.

I am a sucker for little birds. Something about their spindly little legs gets me every time. This little one was dancing the edge of the tidal shift on Minot Beach in September 2011.

Also - I don't care what the weather forecast says, spring is coming. I spied purple and white crocuses* poking their cheerful little heads up in front of my daughter's school this afternoon. Spring is a determined creature and she gets up again and again, no matter how many times winter tries to knock her back.

* or croci, for those who've just gotta be like that.
Since the big news of the day was born aloft on a puff of white smoke in Rome, I thought it fitting to use this picture from April of 2012 for today's image from the archives. This cross was out at the lighthouse on Cedar Point after an Easter sunrise service was held.
