Field Trip Friday: Plymouth Rock

As Thanksgiving approaches, our thoughts turn to nearby Plymouth, Massachusetts - or is that just a New England thing, that we give consideration to the Pilgrims? Certainly virtually all of the kids in this area make an elementary school field pilgrimage to Plimoth Plantation to see what they have been studying close up and personal, as it were. In any case, legend has it that this is where it all began:

And to this day, kids from all over the world approach the impressive columned monument and peer through the dark iron fencing down at this humble stone in the sand. There's generally a moment of quiet before a small voice chimes in with disappointment - "Is that it?"

There used to be an exercise trail on the Ellis Estate. Each station had a sign with instructions on the appropriate exercise and most stops had some type of equipment, like rings or a pull-up bar. Now all that remains is the signs, with their enthusiastic stick figures demonstrating fitness techniques.

There's no mistaking the change in seasons on the beach. There's a particular tang to the smell of the ocean and a sharpness of the wind as it works its way into the collar of your jacket.

416 voters in the high school gym on a Monday night for a special town meeting.

The Ellis Estate house is slowly being restored to its former glory. Currently the home of the Scituate Arts Association, this lovely house was built in 1874 and was given to the town along with its surrounding lands. Two horror movies were filmed at this location - Ghosthouse and The House By The Cemetery. Still, I find the house more charming than creepy - especially with its current cheerfully painted exterior.

Red Sox Nation is rejoicing!

My father, a lifelong Red Sox fan who's made a second career out of his love for baseball, was at Fenway Park for Game 6 last night to witness the World Series win. Can I tell you how incredibly happy that makes me?

This little woolly bear will be a tiger moth when he grows up - but first he has to survive the winter, freezing solid in the process.

I don't know about you, but I sure hope he does have a long, cold winter to get through... I could really use an easier time of it than we had last year.

I'm rolling out a new regular feature here on Scituate Daily Photo - Shelter Sunday.

I have been volunteering at the Scituate Animal Shelter for a few years and take pictures of the adoptable cats for their website. It's a nice way to give something back and I'm proud to be a volunteer with such a wonderful organization.

Let's start things off with Polliwog, a shy black kitten who needs a patient friend. Polli's start in life was a little rough - born outside to a feral mother - but she's going to reward her adoptive family with loyalty and love. I've spent time with this kitten and let me tell you, she snuggles and purrs like nobody's business once she's assured that you really do want to be her friend. Milkweed Pod Season

The milkweed pods are opening and their seeds go dancing on the autumn winds. When I was little, I loved to take an open pod and blow the seeds from my hand. I never gave them much thought beyond that simple joy.

It turns out that milkweed is quite a useful plant. It can be eaten and its floss can be used in place of down. And it is a favorite of the monarch butterfly.

But me, I like it because it's pretty and because it reminds me of happy childhood times.

Field Trip Friday: The New England Aquarium

The small person and I made a trip to the New England Aquarium this week. It was our first visit since their extensive renovations and we were thrilled with what we found - all of our old favorites, plus some new experiences. The Shark and Ray Touch Tank was a source of endless wonder.

Most of all we were impressed by the folks who work at the Aquarium. All the educators were so friendly, helpful and enthusiastic about making a genuine connection with a curious kid. We'll be back soon.
