Just went and saw The Social Network, Trent Reznor is the man. I would have to say however, that the whole time I thought how radiohead would be the best music to soundtrack this film. With the lyrics of desperation and loneliness I just think it could have killed it in any Zukerberg scene.

So on that note I give you... Radiohead, because it's a lazy sunday and this song just makes me feel fine.

Side note: I'm very happy that I was able to use Lil' Wayne and gonorrhea in a blog title together.

Anyways, our favorite (?) dreadlocked, styrofoam cup handling rapper who gets out of jail in less than two months is back with new music! Wayne and his BFF Drake have come together and have created a masterpiece called, yes, "Gonorrhea."

And by masterpiece I mean a steaming pile. You might even say the song will make you feel like you have been infected with said STD. Sorry if that was too harsh. Mainly sorry to Drake who I have a genuine liking for and who I have had a crush on since I was 12 (Go Degrassi Panthers!).

At any rate, this song isn't very good. It's pretty close to a Rebirth track, an album which should leave everyone's consciousness if it hasn't already. You be the judge:

I'm so obsessed with the fact that Solange Knowles is making a comeback (Yeah, Of Montreal is okay too, but they've been around). Not sure if anyone else remembers her earlier work, it was awesome, but this is even more awesome. Let's just hope she's not pulling an Ashlee Simpson and trying to get bigger than her sister by becoming a heinous lip-synching, rock-star-marrying freak. If I know anything about Solange (which I don't really) she's nothing like that.

You go, girl.

IOWA CITY, IA – SCOPE Productions and University of Iowa Dance Marathon have the pleasure of announcing that Jack’s Mannequin will perform at the IMU Main Lounge on Sunday, November 7th at 7:00PM featuring special guest Andrew Ripp.

Andrew McMahon, piano tickling song weaver of Jack’s Mannequin, is not a typical lead singer of a pop punk band. Andrew divulges secrets within his songs that most people would never have the courage to share, from his personal thoughts of love and loss to his fight with a seemingly terminal disease. Jack’s Mannequin strings together songs that can simultaneously make a listener break out their dancing shoes while thinking of the implications of what Andrew’s struggle means.

With hit singles like “Mixed Tape,” “Dark Blue,” and “The Resolution,” Jack’s Mannequin is sure to entertain audiences of all ages. Their most recent album The Glass Passenger peaked at number 8 on the billboard top 200 with 49,000 copies sold in its first week.

This show itself has some strong importance for all in attendance. Dance Marathon, the co-sponsor of the event, works every year to help provide emotional and financial support for pediatric oncology and bone marrow transplant patients and their families. Scope Productions and First Avenue Productions are proud to present Capitol Recording Artist Dierks Bentley in concert, Thursday, October 28th at the Fieldhouse on the University of Iowa campus.

Dierks Bentley snagged three CMA Awards nominations earlier this month for Male Vocalist of the Year, Album of the Year for UP ON THE RIDGE, and Musical Event of the Year for the album’s track “Bad Angel” featuring Miranda Lambert and Jamey Johnson. Since its release on June 8, UP ON THE RIDGE has won critics over with the Washington Post calling it “the best country recording we’ll hear in 2010” and NPR deeming it “timeless.”

Bentley's studio albums have accounted for fourteen singles on the country singles charts, of which seven have reached No. 1: his debut single "What Was I Thinkin'", as well as "Come a Little Closer", "Settle for a Slowdown", "Every Mile a Memory", "Free and Easy (Down the Road I Go)", "Feel That Fire" and "Sideways". Four more of his singles have reached Top Five on the country charts as well.

Ned Mendenhall, president of First Avenue Productions, said, “Dierks was a show that we all wanted to get back to the U of Iowa campus. His show in April of 2008 sold out in about a week and a half and was one of the top shows of the year.”

Megan McCormick

SCOPE Productions has the pleasure of announcing that Megan McCormick will perform live at the Black Box Theater on November 3rd at 9:30 PM.

Megan McCormick is not some burgeoning new artist with the need for superstardom through the means of sugary pop music. She is, however, a newcomer to the musical scene. With her debut release, Honest Words, McCormick is showing the world that heartfelt honest songwriting is still alive and kicking.

Tracks like “Wreck,” “Shiver,” and “Drifting” show McCormick’s overall diversity. She changes from soulful blues guitar shredding to soft heartfelt acoustic songs about love and loss. Her debut album shows the emotional maturity of someone way beyond her young age of 23.

McCormick may be new to her career as a musician, but she is no stranger to Iowa City. She has appeared twice in the last year, once previously in the IMU Main Lounge opening for Singer/ Songwriter Matt Nathanson. McCormick is sure to make the third time a charm and bring out all the stops to give an awe-inspiring performance.

SCOPE Productions has the pleasure of announcing that Gov’t Mule will be performing as a part of the Homecoming concert on October 1st on the Pentacrest lawn. The show will begin immediately following the Homecoming parade.

Since their inception in 1994, Gov’t Mule have been synonymous with the term jam band. The band is a spinoff of the legendary Southern rock band The Allman Brothers, and includes members from The Allman Brothers lineup, Warren Haynes and Allen Woody. Gov’t Mule has garnered a large, dedicated fan base thanks to their unrelenting tour schedule and highly energized performances.

With deep cuts from their previous records like “Soulshine,” “Beautifully Broken,” and “Broke Down On The Brazos,” fans are sure to hear the band’s classic hits. Front-man Warren Haynes was ranked as Rolling Stone Magazines 23rd best guitarist of all time and creates a rocking and captivating performance.

Album Club.

A select few of us here in Scope love music so much that we feel it necessary to meet once a week and talk about an album each of us have listened to throughout our time apart. This meeting we creatively call "album club", it is a small group, but we hold a belief that we are a powerful think tank when it comes to music. So I thought, in the ever consistent effort to make this blog interesting, I would extend an invitation to you, the readers, to share your thoughts.

This week we listened to Arcade Fire's The Suburbs.

Group Initial Thoughts-

We liked it! It was another strong showing from a band that has already proven their worth with previous disks Funeral and Neon Bible. The collective came to the decision that the album needed more spins from each of us, that it seemed like a grower (which can be said for a few albums this year ie The National- High Violet, Black Keys- Brothers). We thought that the music was a strong point as always, reaching into many different genres and tempos to keep the listener interested. The most criticism came about 3/4ths of the way into the record, we all said it seemed to lag for a few tracks, but it picked itself back up near the end.

Rarely do singer songwriters create such an atmosphere that concertgoers are hushed into a tranquil vow of silence. In the case of Iron & Wine, Iowa City is lucky to welcome this soft-spoken maestro to the stage to calm minds and hearts alike. Iron & Wine’s sole luminary, Samuel Beam, writes songs as well as he creates stunning visuals and storylines for listeners to bob their heads to.

Samuel Beam is no young buck to the hierarchy of song craft, even before his 2002 debut release The Creek Drank The Cradle, Beam had been writing songs for seven years. Iron & Wine’s lyrics are ones of a seemingly different time and place; a pastoral exploration of the soul from the heart of Sam’s own bedroom. With songs like “Passing Afternoon”, “Boy With A Coin”, and his reinvention of the Postal Service’s “Such Great Heights”, fans and newcomers alike are sure to be entertained for hours on end.

EP?

I think many of us were afraid when Sufjan Stevens seemingly took a break from music. We all looked on as he said the 50 states project was "such a joke," we all cringed to think he may be on some kind of musical breakdown. Well fear not children Sufjan is back with an new EP called All Delighted People, it is strange to call it an EP because it crosses the 60 minute mark, but we will call it whatever as long as it exists. Well I can attest it is a beautiful work and I am excited to see what he does in the future.

SCOPE Productions has the pleasure of announcing that Kate Nash will be appearing at the Englert Theater on November 8th at 7:30 PM. Doors will open at 6:30 PM.

Singer Songwriter Kate Nash is no easy listening experience for you to take a warm bath to. The 22-year-old vixen weaves mini-narratives about self-doubt, lame boyfriends, and the ever-constant wish to find a boy who can make her happy for once. Nash’s lyrics are full of the childlike innocence of the first-person narrative and use language that would make a sailor proud.

Nash exploded onto the scene with her breakout album Made of Bricks, which spawned 16,000 sales in the first week, debuting at 38 on the Billboard top 200. Her follow-up album My Best Friend Is You spawned her biggest single to date “Do-Wah-Doo.” Other singles that have propelled Nash into stardom include “Foundations”, “Mouthwash”, and “Kiss That Girrrl.” Nash’s show is determined to be one that will leave jaws on the floor and hearts a little warmer as they leave.

Hawkapalooza 2010: Big Boi & Super Mash Bros.

Hawks Nest and SCOPE Productions are proud to present Hawkapalooza 2010, featuring hip-hop artist Big Boi, mash-up sensations Super Mash Bros., and coaches and players from Hawkeye athletic teams. Hawkapalooza will begin at 6 PM on Thursday, September 2nd in Hubbard Park. This annual kickoff for Hawkeye athletics is free and open to the public.

Jon Miller, the founder of the popular Hawkeye athletic site, Hawkeyenation.com, will host the Hawkapalooza Pep Rally. Miller is also a voice in sports radio around Iowa, hosting the “Miller and Deace in the Morning” show which airs Monday through Friday on KXNO 1460-AM in Des Moines, as well as co-hosting “Soundoff” with Jim Zabel on WHO 1040-AM following all Iowa football games. Miller will be a co-host of a new television show called “The Pulse,” the first all-opinion sports show for the Big Ten Network.

Antwan Andre Patton, better known by his stage name Big Boi, is a rap artist most
synonymous with his work in the hip-hop project OutKast. Big Boi grew up in
Georgia where he crafted his own unique voice with verses about politics and current social discrepancies. Big Boi’s latest release, Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son Of Chico Dusty, is already topping charts with singles like “Shutterbug”, “Follow Us”, and “General Patton.” After an acclaimed Pitckfork Festival performance, Hawks Nest and SCOPE Productions are excited to bring Big Boi to Iowa City.

The Super Mash Bros., a self proclaimed “hot cousin of Girl Talk,” are a sample based mashup duo consisting of Nicolas Fenmore and Ethan Dawes. Sampling music from all genres and generations, the Super Mash Bros. will definitely energize the crowd for Hawkapalooza 2010.

Attendees will have the chance to win great prizes through a $1 raffle with all proceeds going to the University of Iowa Dance Marathon. Only UI students with a valid student ID are eligible to receive giveaways and raffle prizes.
