I, stupidly, did something I never do and reviewed a message board posting about this weekends concerts. I realize now why exactly I stay my distance from them. Negative comments can sting. Hearing that some people may have had a bad experience because of any number of reasons is upsetting. I am such a perfectionist that I always want everyone to leave happy.

I won't really comment on the two or three comments of my egotism in both person and online. Truthfully, if you believe I have an ego and that I am so self assured then my therapist is worth every single dollar that I pay him.

I will, though, comment on the photography issue, though. First, let me say that the photographer was hired by the producers of the concert to take professional shots and the photographer, who has taken photos for all of my past concerts as well as an upcoming 'secret' project I am working on, was only following orders. That being said, I totally feel for the audience members who felt distracted and upset about the constant clicking of the camera. I have a very short attention span and constant anxiety built by small annoyances in life. I see a cell phone being picked up in a movie theatre and i am looking at the individual more then I am watching the movie, constantly waiting for them to take out the cell phone again so I can tell them how rude they are for ruining my movie. So, trust me when I say, I get it - 100%. It's a matter that I will make sure is never an issue again at any of my future concerts and will point it out to the producing team, as well, for their future concerts. It was never anyone's intention of annoying any of you and I thank you for being so honest in your comments about it so that it can never happen again.

I also will comment on my cursing habits. Yes, its true. I curse. A lot. I curse in everyday life. A lot. Cursing is a very strong part of my vocabulary. With that being said, I agree sometimes it can be excessive and so can some of my vulgar jokes to an audience who may not appreciate that type of language or find it funny in any way. My mind is constantly running. When I am on stage, I am not thinking about censoring myself, even though it's been brought to my attention many many times. I understand your comments, though. With that being said, when I am on a stage, I am who I am. 100%. Just like in my music, I am too honest. I say what is on my mind and what is in my heart. Just like when I write a song, when I am on a stage, my words just go. If i censored myself, I wouldn't be me. I can't apologize for that and I wont. I hear that some of you find it inappropriate and completely understand your disappointment but, at the end of the day ... this is me and, for the first time in my life, I am starting to actually like me, so I make no excuse for it.

With all of that being said - I feel honored and blessed in my life. I get to travel the world and do what it is I love. I get to meet each of you and hear your stories and be touched by you, emotionally. I am a very lucky man. If you think I may be distracted when we meet, sometimes I am, BUT I always remember you. Many I remember by face, some by name, some by stories. I always remember, though. You always leave a lasting impression on me.

Two days ago, Mark Shenton posted a lovely review of my London concerts on his Blog on The Stage's website. First, I felt honored to be mentioned in the same article as Jason Robert Brown (the absolute and ultimate king of the cult composer and one of the greatest and most honest and emotional writers presently writing) and was fascinated that he was able to understand what it is I do. I often say that people in the industry don't really get me. It's the people who buy the albums that do. Yet, for the first time, someone in the industry connected the dots to David Friedman, a man a respect completely. I wanted to share that review with each of you (link below) and say, once again - to all those who made it out to the concerts in both Australia and London - THANK YOU !!! To all those who email me your stories and your letters - THANK YOU !!!

This has been a crazy month and a half for me, with traveling, performing and finishing up my most personal CD yet. I thank you for keeping me sane, for holding my hand and for being a part of this experience with me. You don't know how truly grateful I feel for this life that you treat me to and I thank you from the very bottom part of my fucking egotistical heart.

With Love, SA

http://blogs.thestage.co.uk/shenton/2010/09/something-extra-for-the-weekend/index.html

MY NEW PROJECT - From ME to YOU !!!

Hey Everyone -
I am EXCITED to share that, starting in January, I will be giving back to all of you with a wonderful and exciting new program. This is my thanks to all of you for being so incredible to me.

At least once a day I get an email from aspiring musical theatre performers wanting to find ways to explore more opportunities to learn about the industry but one major thing is standing in there way - they can't afford it. Many of my contemporaries offer incredible masterclasses with many teaching courses on how to write for musical theatre or teaching on better ways to audition. Well, starting in January, I too will be starting my own masterclass.

Once a month, I will offer a two hour masterclass at a rehearsal space in New York City. Each class will center on something different pertaining to musical theatre and ways to grow in the field. In addition, each month will host a special guest who will be on hand for the 'Q and A' session with a Broadway Personality. I have already started lining up guests. Those joining us will include Tony Award winning actors and actresses; long running featured members of Broadway's hit shows; Award Winning composers and lyricist (both established and up and coming); Award winning Choreographers; set designers; costume designers; casting directors and many many more !!!

So, what's so special about this masterclass ? Well ...

IT'S FREE !!!!

Yes, you heard me right. Absolutely free. I will be taking care of all the costs myself. Why, you may ask, would I do something like that ... well, the answer is simple - I love the arts and I have been fortunate enough to make a living doing what it is I love. When I started producing the 'Monday Nights, New Voices' series, I started realizing how important it is to give back to the community. I make no money off of this series, often losing money, and yet, I am more proud of producing this night of new talent then of anything else I have ever done so far in the industry. What it comes down to is ... I love what I do and it is so rare for people to love what they do. Truthfully, I wouldn't be able to do this without any of you and so, for one year, every month, I will host this masterclass as my way to give back to all of you.

So, why should I pick you ? Great question I don't know the answer to, yet !! It's time for you to tell me. Each person applying will need to write me a short essay about what theatre means to them and why being accepted into this program is important for you. It is as simple as that. Please email scottalanmasterclass@yahoo.com with your essay. I will announce all accepted students on December 15th, 2010.

All applications must be received no later then November 15th, 2010. I will be reading all essays personally. I look forward to hearing from all of you and getting a chance to meet and work with each of you for the year of 2011. We're gonna have a great time and I expect to learn as much about myself from this experience as each of you will learn about yourself.

Best, Scott Alan

AIDS WALK - Donate today

I will be participating in the AIDS walk on May 16th, my 32nd Birthday. Without you, I don't know where I'd be today. This year, alone, you have given me an incredible amount of strength in San Fransisco, New York, London and Los Angeles. For the support you have shown me, I am forever grateful.

I am so looking forward to what 2010 has to offer and I am excited about meeting many more of you in cities I haven't yet performed and/or visited yet. Getting the opportunity to meet those who have supported me over the years is so incredible and I value our time together immensely. It humbles me.

My New Years resolution for 2010 is to not allow fear to stop me from enjoying what life has to offer me. I fear flying and heights and, like many, fear being rejected. I am going to put myself out there more then I ever have before and have great anticipation for what my new found form of strength can supply me in the coming year ahead.

I wish all of you a wonderful and happy and prosperous New Year and am looking forward to meeting and/or seeing you all again very soon !!!

With Love and Appreciation,
SA

It has been awhile ...

It sure has been some time since I last wrote a journal note, and for that, I am truly sorry. Life has been throwing incredible blessings my way and for that I haven't had as much time on my hands as I have had in the past. That being said, that in no way means I've forgotten about you in any way, shape or form.

These past few months have been extremely exciting and I have had the great fortune of meeting so many of you at concerts, events and masterclasses around the world. I love nothing more then getting the opportunity of talking with you on a personal basis an feel extremely privileged that I've been able to do so. Yet, work doesn't stop. Before the year ends, I will be meeting many more of you at masterclasses and concerts in LA, London and NY and I CAN'T WAIT !!!!

I mean it when I say that meeting and talking to all of you is inspiring to me. I wouldn't trade it in for the world.

I promise to write more often - this note, though, was just to say hi and thank you all for your continued support.

With Love, SA

May 16th -

Hey everyone -
So, I don't know why I felt the need to share my private information with each and everyone of you but, I have gotten an overwhelming amount of emails this morning wishing me luck at the Breast Cancer Walk in Boston this morning. Since so many of you donated an incredible amount of money to help me raise my donation quota, I thought it was only fair to share with you that I will no longer be walking in Boston today. It is not my place to go into full details over the why's and how's, but due to personal situations, I have made the proper decision to not attend the walk in Boston today, May 16th.

With that being said, I DID want you to know that I am still walking. I will be joined by a group of my friends today in New York City, come rain or come shine, to walk in memory of those who have passed and in honor of those who are fighting the good fight of Breast Cancer. We will begin at 11:30 am, walking through Central Park, and wearing our Breast Cancer ribbons and our Avon Breast Cancer T-Shirt.

Though so many of you donated for me to have the opportunity to walk in the Boston walk, your donations are not being forgotten about. Throughout it, I told of my struggles in an industry that I so wanted to be a part of. At times I was so brutally honest, my friends would tell me to take down the entry because no 'stranger' should know as much as I reveled. I never saw it that way. I saw my readers as people exactly like myself. Their love of theater was equal to mine. Any success I would, or could, experience in my career would be celebrated no greater then their own. I started the journal on my very first day in New York City and have since continued to chronicle the ups and downs of trying to stand out amongst some brilliant composers and lyricists working (and not working) in this industry called 'Theater.'

In the course of six years, I have had over 40 jobs. YES, 40 jobs. I was fired from every single one of them. I am not a good employee. I daydream way too much. On one occasion I was fired for sitting at the piano writing a song instead of bartending. I was told that if I didn't get up and stop writing, I would be let go. I had two lines left to finish. The song I was writing was 'I'm a Star.' I was fired ten minutes after finishing the song. Everyone in my family and all my friends use to joke with me that I could never hold down a job longer then a week. It was true. I also moved around just as much as I was job searching. I could never afford my apartment rent and was constantly couch surfing at friends apartments. The only constant in my life was the love of my dog, Billy, and my passion for composing music and writing lyrics.

This January, Billy and I moved into our very first one bedroom apartment in the city. Sure, it gets lonely living alone sometimes, but it's mine. The walls are painted in the colors I picked out. The plant I purchased from ikea is dying cause I don't know how to keep a plant alive. My bedroom is a sauna since the heater is on 90. But, its my sauna. It's my dead plant. It's my painted walls.

Last night I did something that I have been dreaming of doing my entire life of being fired from jobs. I fired myself. I gave my two week notice bartending at a wonderful bar in the West Village that I have been bartending at for over a year and a half and have enjoyed greatly.

It was time to spread my wings and see if I could fly on my own. To be a composer. Just a composer. Nothing more. Nothing less. To write as many songs as my heart could write. Letting go is scary but I am excited for what the future will hold for me. For six years I have struggled. I would never said I deserve success more then anyone else. I have always said that there are better writers out there then me. Whatever the reasons, though, I feel honored and blessed.

There have been so many wonderful blessings in my life but none more wonderful then all of your continued support.

To those of you who have been reading this blog since its beginning six years ago. Thank you for continuing to follow my career and for believing in me. For those new to this site, I welcome your support.

I don't dream alone. I dream with all of you ...

To those of you struggling to be heard as you follow your dream. Keep pushing, keep dreaming, keep believing. I was told day after day that I wasn't good enough to succeed. What I ask of you is to make me proud and push the naysayers as far away as possible.

I tell all my 'New Voices,' that the moment you make it, don't become bitter. Don't ever forget that you will always continue to learn. Don't forget who you are. Don't forget the friends who stood by your side and lent you a couch to sleep on when you had no home. Don't forget the book store you worked in, the bar you served drinks in, your 9-5 office job .... remember your struggle. Remember those in the industry that lent you a helping hand when you just wanted your voice to be heard. Remember that when a 'New Voices' asks you for a helping hand. Pay it forward.

And, most important ...

When you reach that day ...

Don't forget the distance you have come ...

best,
SA

BIRDLAND CONCERT - Now on youtube

Hey Everyone -
it has been a long time since last I wrote. Well, I have some exciting news and I really hope you will join me .... On February 16th, Katie will be taking the stage at Birdland with some VERY special guest stars singing her work. Things here have been slightly crazy but I am not complaining one bit. Tomorrow we lay down our last vocal for the CD with the incredible Sutton Foster and then it's mixing, mixing, mixing every single day, with a hopeful CD in my hand on Monday. It's really getting exciting. I really love this CD and I hope that you do, too. Everyone sounds so beautiful on their respected tracks and the rhythm, string, brass and woodwind section all sound absolutely beautiful as well. I am also really happy with the design work for the booklet that Robbie has come up with as well. It's just so crazy that I am releasing a new CD already. 'Dreaming Wide Awake' was released on October 4th of last year and now, just a little over a year later, the new album is ready to be set into the world. I really really really hope you like it. My anxiety is starting to start again.
Everyone keeps asking when they should expect the CD on cdbaby and iTunes. Well, that is a good question and, I really don't have a good answer. Itunes won't happen until at least the middle of December but you can expect it on CDbaby.com sometime in the middle of November. I am hoping for November 15th yet, that may be a real stretch. One thing is for sure, you can purchase 'Keys' on December 1st at the Lincoln Center Barnes and Nobles CD performance and signing (information on the news page). So many performers from both 'Dreaming Wide Awake' and 'Keys' will be on hand to sing and sign, so I hope you will all come out and celebrate with us.
So, that seems to be all I can give you right now. Keep checking back here for more info as it becomes available and start getting people excited about it.

xoxo -SA

SA Blog #10 - Kerry Ellis and Scott Alan Meet and Record - REMIXED

SA Blog #9 - Still ...
