I've started the process of colouring my Inktober drawings, or at least some of the ones I enjoyed. The intent is to get some of these up in my store and hopefully drum up some interest for them.

This is another design element that was used in a banner design. I had originally planned to ink this traditionally, but decided to try some of the new Kyle T. Webster brushes now included with Photoshop CC. I haven't been able to find a Photoshop inking brush I really enjoyed up until now. I'm excited to try some of these other brushes out. The sum total of my Inktober 2017 contributions. I was actually pretty busy this month with the day job, plus a few impromptu illustration gigs so I just didn't have time to commit to the full 31 days. That being said I was happy to have kept with it and at least put some more personal work out there. I have some plans for some of these drawings, so hopefully this won't be the last you see of them.

One downside to working on paid illustrations is not being able to show the work you've done, and I suppose not having the time to do more personal work. So then the blog suffers a bit because I'm posting less and less here even though I'm still busy drawing.

Destiny - Rise of Iron

This piece was originally done for a cover contest for a magazine with an issue focused on the video game Destiny. I actually misread the deadline so I wasn't able to submit, but the point really was to focus on art again, and to celebrate a game I've spent quite a lot of time enjoying. Destiny is a great mix of FPS and MMO, without the big time commitments that other MMOs can have. It's also a game that's built up a fantastic community, who some members of which raised over half a million dollars for charity by streaming the game recently.

I was particularly proud of this piece; a good chunk of what I wanted to accomplish appeared on the page which is not always the case. I sometimes find myself just hoping for 'happy accidents' and not sticking to the script. That can sometimes result in great pieces, but not always push you to do more interesting things or to stick to your guns when it comes to the vision you had for something. As always, feedback is welcome.

Here's some more Copic marker work. I'm fairly confident in getting the grayscale marker work to translate in a scan, but it gets a bit muddle trying to bring the blues in. This particular color is very close to non-repo blue though, so perhaps that's the issue. At any rate, I'm really enjoying working with markers and hope to find a way to incorporate this with my Photoshop work more.

I believe I may have posted this elsewhere, but not in a proper scan and not here on the blog. Some more Copic marker work. I enjoy the depth markers can give an ink drawing without having to go to a full blown rendering in Photoshop. There is something to be said for the subtlety of traditional media. I have some more of these to post up, and some more ideas on the way. Enjoy!

I had originally done this for a friend as a birthday present. He's a bid birder and this was one of his favourite birds. He got the original but not before I'd scanned it in. I've never really had much luck prior to this scanning markers but I found a great tutorial on how to clean up marker work for scanning.

I really need to do more to get artwork back up on the site more frequently. I have been having a killer creative block lately, and what work I have done can't be shared publicly at the moment. It's been a long time since I've drawn just for myself. I will be uploading some other marker work I've done shortly though, so there's that. Baby steps I suppose.

Just a quick note to let everyone know life's thrown a few ringers my way over the past year, and while things are coming around and returning to normal my art output has not. I really hope to fix that soon, but I can't really promise anything at the moment. I hate the idea of this website sitting dormant for so long but that's been my reality. I have a few pieces I've completed, but haven't really even had the spare time to get them scanned and uploaded. I need to find a way to make all that a priority again, and hope to have more information soon.

I picked up a set of Copic markers on sale, after some failed attempts at other brands. I have to say the hype around these markers is very justified. I didn't worry too much about fantastic, finished pieces. I just wanted something I could lay down some marker practice on. Life has been incredibly hectic with two awesome girls at home, and increased duties at work. Creating art has been difficult. I hope to change that soon, and will do my best to participate once again in Inktober this year, if anything on a weekly basis.

Here's my marker practice so far. My apologies for not having nice scanned pieces; pictures from my phone will have to do for now.

It Is No Longer Enough

I'm going to go on a bit of a rant here, so feel free to skip to the bottom, because I think it's important you at least get the gist of what I want to say.

I'm going to exercise my white, male privilege here, the inexplicable ease with which it is to have my voice heard, and say that it's just not enough anymore.

It's not enough to not like the racist comments your friends make, or to sit in uncomfortable silence as it happens. It's not enough to repost a Jon Stewart video and feel like you've done your part; saying something the oppressed have been screaming for decades is not brave, it's bare minimum. It's not enough to idly sit by and watch friends or acquaintances argue the merits of the confederate flag as it's inclusion in public places hurts people every time they walk by it. It's not enough to chalk up ingrained, supported and in some circles encouraged racial terrorism to mental illness and just move on. It's not enough to listen to relatives and colleagues make gay and trans jokes and not speak up; to not defend those whose only crime is being in love with whomever they want, or living their lives the way they've always known in their hearts they were. It's not enough to say how much you care about your wife/sister/daughter, then listen to someone comment about a beautiful woman, saying things like "we all know how she got the job"; to look at gender as a dividing line and that crossing that line at any time is weird or out of place. It's not enough to smirk uncomfortably at jokes about rape.

This is your chance. Call someone you love out on their nonsense, bigotry and hatred. Tell them their words are hurtful, their line of thinking is outdated and outmoded. Put them in a spotlight and let their hate show. Tell them it's enough!

This is your chance. Tell the racists in your life you can't be friends with them anymore; their stereotypes and vitriol doesn't fly anymore. Tell the homophobes who think today is a sad day to be American you don't want to hear from them anymore; their hate speech just won't register. Tell the bigots who'd rather trans people live their lives in the cages they were born into than see them freed you can't stomach them anymore. Tell the misogynists in your lives that women are the strongest, most beautiful creatures to ever grace us with their presence on Earth, and if they can't see that they're blind, and you're blind to them.

Whether I've known you since we were kids, or we passed each other in the halls at work know this: if you'd rather gay people stayed in the closet, if you'd rather black people or anyone of colour stayed out of your neighbourhood, if you'd rather trans people stayed as what they were born, if you'd rather women stayed in the kitchen? We're not friends anymore. I don't want to hear your side of things. I don't want to argue the merits of your viewpoint. I don't want to see things from your perspective. We're done. I'm not sweeping you under the carpet either. I'll gladly paint anyone that cares to see the picture that you have hate in your heart. I'll climb up on my soapbox, to my pedestal and atop my high horse to let it be known: You are wrong.

Unfriend me, unfollow me, just crawl back under your rock.

** I posted this to my Facebook wall on June 26, 2015: the day the U.S. Supreme Court ruled same sex marriage was to be legal in all States. A good friend pointed out that I took the one day everyone on Facebook was (mostly) happy, and chose to "go for throats". It's a fair point, but this was on the heels of a year full of near constant reports of police violence towards black men and women (and children), the shooting of nine people in the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston NC, and all the hand wringing, hemming and hawing that came along with doing anything but calling it what it was -- racist violence. Couple that with gamergate, white power marches and any other blatant display of crazy and I had to get it off my chest. A lot of people were faced with the true side to some of their 'friends' on social media during all of this; forced to read through "but wait a minute", "what about white men?", "#alllivesmatter" narcissism and bigotry. I loved reading about the same sex marriage ruling like everyone else, had had countless discussions with people who were uncomfortable with the idea about how they were just on the wrong side of history, but I guess I just wasn't done being disgusted with the rest of it. **
