Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim Bilbao

I’ve been meaning to start posting photos from my archive of famous buildings worldwide and recently got a request for photos from Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim Bilbao so now seems as good a time as any to start and the Guggenheim Bilbao a suitably iconic building to kick things off. The museum was completed in 1997 on the banks of the Nervion River in Bilbao, the largest city in the Basque Country. It was a transformational project for architect Frank Gehry and the at-the-time ailing city (and region), trumpeting them both on the world stage. It also kicked off a decade of global mega-projects that tried to recreate what came to be known as the Bilbao-effect of a trademark building that would serve as a pilgrimage point for tourists.

Ayuso Architecture – Bronxville, NY – Residential Renovation

This is the second project I got to photograph for Agustin Ayuso of Ayuso Architecture this Fall. He ran me through all of the modifications that had to be made – I think the kitchen was swapped from one side to the other and a screened in porch was either absorbed or a previous weatherization of a porch had to be completely gutted and done again. It was tough for me to visualize, though, because he had done such a seamless job.

Ayuso Architecture – Bronxville, NY – Residential Remodel

In the Fall I got to photograph two beautiful projects for Agustin Ayuso of Ayuso Architecture in the vicinity of his Bronxville, NY base. This is the first of the two, a simple update of the master and children’s bathrooms as well as a great eating nook with a quaint view over the village with just enough screening from the surrounding trees. Even on a project this limited in scope, Agustin’s exquisite detailing stands out, most notably in the full-length mirror directly below which deftly conceals the largest medicine cabinet you could imagine.

There’s so much love out there on this Valentine’s Day that it only made sense to take the chance to update my Wedding Photography Portfolio. My most sincere thanks go out to all of the couples who have entrusted me with their most precious memories, as well as to the wonderful Portland photographers who’ve had me along and taught me the ropes – Maggie Hudson (Honeysuckle Photography), Becca Blevins (… Photography & Fine Art) – and even Kris Allen (…Photography) who had me along for a wedding all the way up in Seattle.

Skylab Architecture’s HOMB Open House

Skylab Architecture had an open house for their latest project, the Taft Residence, the first built example of their HOMB modular design system. The HOMB system is based on a series of equilateral triangles that guide both the structural elements of the building as well as the spaces themselves and it harkens back to similar work done by Frank Lloyd Wright late in his career. Unlike Wright though, Skylab’s been able to leverage the latest in prefab construction techniques to build this house in particular out of just four modules, assembled on site in the span of a couple of hours. A two-story double-wide that is anything but. My understanding is that the modules were built by Method Homes, LLC offsite and that Rainier Pacific was responsible for buttoning up the project on-site. Excellent work all around.

Susie and Jamin’s New Year’s Eve Wedding

I’ve known Susie for ages, having done a bunch of photography for the non-profit (Committed Partners for Youth, now Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lane County) that she used to run down in Eugene. I’ve known Jamin for nearly as long because there’s no way you can date the director of an organization without getting roped into helping out at all of the events. They’ve been dating devotedly – this was a long-distance relationship for a good chunk of it – for years so it was nice to finally see them make things official. The most exciting part is that over the past several months, Jamin, an architect, has been building a house of his own design for the newly married couple to settle into together. While it’s not quite finished, the house, which is nestled into the West Hills with spectacular views of Portland, couldn’t have been a better backdrop for an intimate wedding with family and a New Year’s Eve dinner party afterward to celebrate with their closest friends. Congratulations Susie and Jamin, I couldn’t be happier for you!

Bodhi

I only got a few moments with Bodhi in front of the camera but his outsized personality showed through. He was particularly sweet when saying goodnight to his parents, Rich and Tania, and that last shot on Mom’s shoulder made my heart melt.

Celia and Ruben

I think this is the first time I’ve been hit on by a three year old but, within minutes of arriving at Mara and Agustin’s, young Celia was flirting shamelessly and asking if I “wanted to play in her bedroom?” Mom and I had a good laugh, particularly on her second and third inquiry. She’s forward and persistent, something Dad will have to worry about in years to come. She’s absolutely adorable, too, only adding to a father’s predicament but the real draw this time was baby brother Ruben, who should be just about 3-months old at this point (just a few weeks younger in the photographs). He’s just now about the same age as Celia was on my last visit – at a point when they go between asleep, half-asleep and crying uncontrollably – so I look forward to the next time I get to see Ruben as his personality emerges. I just hope he has half the charm of his big sister.

Hummingbird Wholesale in the Stellaria Building by Nir Pearlson Architect, Inc.

Earlier this Summer I had the good fortune of photographing Nir Pearlson Architecture‘s gut renovation of the Stellaria Building for Hummingbird Wholesale. Well since our shoot there’s been some great news as Nir won both the People’s Choice and the Mayor’s Choice awards in the annual AIA-SWO (American Institute of Architects Southwestern Oregon) design competition. At the end you can see a preview of the winning board that Nir created using our photographs and you can click on it to download the full PDF in all it’s glory. Congrats to Nir and his team on a beautiful renovation and some well-deserved recognition!
