We had a great Sunday at WellSpring. The Message came from John 1…. here are a few of my notes:

Words matter. However there are so many words in our culture that words begin to loose their weight. Words become hollow. We question the “truth” of words. They become noise, just voices. If someone lies or doesn’t follow through with their words, they loose the ability to speak with authority into our lives. Words are closely associated with authority in scripture.

Look at Luke 7:7-10

“And Jesus went with them. When he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends, saying to him, “Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof. Therefore I did not presume to come to you. But say the word, and let my servant be healed. For I too am a man set under authority, with soldiers under me: and I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” When Jesus heard these things, he marveled at him, and turning to the crowd that followed him, said, “I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith.” Luke 7:6-9 ESV

We see that Realized words honor and give glory/ authority/ weight to their source.

In other words…. if everything a person says came true and was put into action, we would trust and give more and more authority to their words… their voice.

When we look to Genesis 1 we see that God’s voice created everything.

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.” Genesis 1:1-3 ESV

We can have infinite trust for God’s authority because everything he voices happens.

John 1:1 begins with: “In the beginning was the WORD.” That is a mind blowing statement by itself….”In the beginning was the VOICE….GOD’S VOICE”. The statement gives the impression that the VOICE is all that is needed. (Think about that for a minute…”man does not live by bread alone, but….”) That somehow all power and authority exist in the VOICE.

John says this about the beginning…

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.” John 1:1-3 ESV

In our human understanding the VOICE of God “is” God because what we hear the VOICE command….happens, materializes, and is realized. But this mind blowing understanding of all power and authority doesn’t end there. John goes on….

“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.” John 1:14 ESV

God’s VOICE BECAME FLESH! The sounds that came out of the mouth of God….the voice that spoke the universe into existence…..put on flesh…and became the VOICE incarnate…quite literally. So…. follow this….

Realized words give glory to their source.

God’s infinite authority is revealed in His VOICE…Jesus! …and Jesus materializing the voice of God in a very literal way gives God all glory.

This should bring exciting new life to the gospel for you…. Look at Hebrews 4…

“For the WORD of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And no creature is hidden from HIS sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of HIM to whom we must give account. Hebrews 4:12-13 ESV

Yes there is some theological discussion about how to interpret logos vs. rhema when defining “word”. However,in this passage the pronouns following “word” here read HIM. Not that this passage shouldn’t encourage us to read scripture, but how exciting is it that HE…Jesus is “living and active”?

So what does this mean for us? Well… Col. 1:27 tells us that

Christ IN you is the hope of Glory.

How does that strike you?…. The VOICE of God inside you?…What should we do with that?

“…for out of the abundance of the heart (your) mouth speaks. Luke 6:45 ESV

What’s inside you, guides your voice.

Your voice… materialized/ realized/ in action/ followed through with… brings glory to it’s source. Listen…

Your actions reveal the voice you listen to.

So the incarnate VOICE of God, Jesus, is a living message for us to materialize.

There are only two voices that we can follow.

Satan says God is a liar. God says Satan is a liar.

You glorify God most when your life materializes, realizes, becomes like the VOICE of God…Jesus! When your life looks like Jesus’ life you glorify God.

The overflow of our heart must shout Jesus in the actions of your life.

He answered, “I tell you, if (my disciples) were silent, the very stones would cry out.” Luke 19:40 ESV

Why would the rocks cry out? Because everything God speaks, happens. It is ultimate authority, power, and glory. God has all authority and our lives should reflect an ultimate trust in the VOICE of God.

Who’s voice are you listening too? Who’s voice is filling your life? Who’s voice is proceeding out of your mouth? Who’s voice is materializing in your life? There are only two voices to choose from. Who’s voice is in you?
