My Scottevest and Other Clothing Items

When it comes to clothing, I may not be the person to look to for fashion advice. Like a lot of guys, I don't particularly care what I look like much of the time, as long as I don't look disheveled or foolish. And I don't waste a moment wondering what I might be seen wearing in travel photos. While I don't hide from the camera, I also don't particularly care to be in the photos. When I see a photogenic or iconic site, I want a photo of it, not me standing in front of it. I do care about packing lightly, however.

It's not just about avoiding schlepping around unwanted weight, though that certainly matters. It's about striving to keep all things unrelated to the travel experience I seek, as simple as possible. I don't want clutter. I want my mental check list of things I have to keep track of (that I have any control over) as short as possible. Because lord knows, the list of other things I have to keep track of is long.

So when it comes to standard items of clothing in the climate of Italy in the summer, I'll be keeping it very simple;

5-6 newer t-shirt style shirts in various earth tones.
1 pair long lightweight cargo pants
1 pair khaki pants (dressy style, very light microfiber)
2 pair short pants - 1 cargo style, 1 a bit dressier
1 light long-sleeve button-down shirt to be worn over a t-shirt on a cooler day
5-6 pair of thicker socks to help cushion the feet
5-6 pair new underwear
Timberland hiking boots
Sandals for warm, non-hiking days
Scottevest convertible travel jacket/vest
Tilley hat

So yes, there will be frequent laundry to do. Since our trips are not short, there is never any possibility of avoiding doing laundry. If you have to do it, you might just as well do small amounts frequently rather than accumulating large piles of smelly, dirty clothing. Everything on my list will dry overnight if the weather isn't overly wet. I have learned to avoid jeans since they are heavy to carry, bulky to pack, bulky to wash and take forever to dry.

All of those items (except for the change of clothing I wear on the plane) get put into my Rick Steves backpack. We all have one - specially designed to be very light and to meet most carry-on luggage requirements. You wouldn't want to have it on your back while hiking 20 miles in the mountains. It's not that kind of backpack. But it works really well to carry from a train station to your lodging. There will still be plenty of room in the pack for some basic non-clothing items as well.

My Tilley hat is important to me because it keeps the sun off my bald head. If you are not among the follicly-challenged, count yourself lucky that you don't have to worry about such things. A garden-variety baseball-style hat would be simpler, but the Tilley covers me better and perhaps makes me look slightly less typically American.

Which brings us to my Scottevest jacket. I bought it for our trip Down Under last summer knowing that it would be cool for much of the time we were in New Zealand. But I bought that particular jacket because it is specially designed as a travel jacket with lots of pockets (see geeky "x-ray" photo above). It also has removable sleeves to convert into a vest. The full jacket can keep me warm during a cool day hiking in the mountains, but with the sleeves off and the zipper lowered, it can be practical to wear on all but the warmest days.

Why would I want to wear a travel vest in summer? Partly just as a convenient place to keep my camera, iPod and a few other items with me without having to revert to using my cargo pants/shorts. But also for security. I don't obsess about the risk of pick-pockets while in Europe, but Italian cities are known as being somewhat higher risk. I don't use a money-belt or any of the related devices. The jacket - with all of the pockets zippered and most of them interior - is a very safe place to keep valuables. As a bonus, it's a great way to get extra stuff on the plane without having to worry about carry-on restrictions of either size or weight. Since it's clothing and not a bag, you can put anything in there that will fit. I may not need to take full advantage of that characteristic, but it's nice to know it's there.

Obviously, I would never be carrying around all this stuff with me (why would I need three cameras and five iPods?) but this was just for fun.

One more thing; This post and the previous one refer to many somewhat expensive items used for travel. Lest you think this all adds up to an obscene additional cost, rest assured that each item (well, except for the travel backpacks) get used very frequently at home as well. And almost none of the items I have noted was purchased at regular price. Some of them were purchased at deep discounts during sale periods. Many were purchased slightly used on eBay. Overall, I would guess we paid about 60% of the retail price for all of these items, spread out over the last few years.

This vest is awesome! You could go anywhere and utilize this vest efficiently in warm or cool climates.

22 pockets. You can even carry your ipad in it. It’s a must have travel item because you don’t need to carry all your items around in bags or a backpack, they are secure on the deep pockets and secret compartments of this great travel vest. It’s made of a lightweight polyeser fabric that is really nice and does not need special treatment as it’s machine washable. Ultimate Cargo Pants
These really are amazing. The offer 16 pockets for almost any item you would need while traveling. The fabric is lightweight and really breathes well, with a soft yet strong feel. The legs of these cargo pants zip off, making them awesome shorts and even more useful. They have magnets in the pocket flaps, I am not sure if this is good or bad. I do know that when I walk by cars the pants are mysteriously drawn to the metal doors. Kind of a new sensation but nice features never the less. Long pockets, short pockets and elastic waist band for comfort. These pants are also good for a game of golf or a casual night out on the town. Or if you zip them off into shorts they are great for a big old fashioned BBQ.

This shirt is super comfortable. Did you ever think that Bamboo could be soft and a pleasure to wear? It’s lightweight and wrinkle resistant. The colors are rich and unique, offering a great mix and match option with your wardrobe. Product Review: ScotteVest Fleece 5.0 Jacket

I was asked by travel clothing company SCOTTEVEST/ SeV to write a review of one of their products for their weekly Pocket Guide newsletter. I am happy to announce that this post will be featured there!

I'm always on the lookout for new gear to make traveling easier.

While wandering around, I like to take a lot of stuff with me. I usually have my cell phone, camera, gorilla pod, passport, wallet, keys, a half liter of water and various other items. If I don't want to walk around with a backpack, my problem usually is -where do I store all of these things? There are only so many pockets in a pair of jeans or the average coat!

I think I may have come across a great solution to my problem- ScotteVest.

ScotteVest is a company that designs a line of clothing which uses TEC- Technology Enabled Clothing. A patented system of pockets, wire management and specialized features for clothing.

I first came across ScotteVest while reading one of my favorite blogs, Everything Everywhere written by Gary Arndt. Gary has been traveling around the world for the last 5 years and is a big fan of the brand which got me interested.

Seeing ScotteVest founder Scott Jordan on the ABC show Shark Tank made me more curious. (Scott was trying to raise $500,000 for TEC, not ScotteVest.)

About a month ago I decided to reach out to ScotteVest to find out some more about their products. I was offered a product to test and review and selected the Fleece 5.0 Jacket.

Fleece 5.0

The Fleece 5.0 has many nice features:

24 pockets so it can hold a lot of gear
It's Convertible- zip-off sleeves convert it from a jacket to a vest
Personal Area Network (PAN) for wiring headphones through jacket to avoid getting tangled in loose wires
The material is a soft, mid-weight micro-fleece with anti-static treatment
Many pockets have small picture-tabs to show what is intended to go inside
Reflective Accents

I was impressed with the 5.0 from the moment I opened the package. It is a really good looking jacket that fit me perfectly and is also very comfortable. It really is amazing how much this jacket can hold. There are pockets for a cell phone, camera, passport, sunglasses, ID, two pen pockets and it can even hold an iPad.

Here's what I love about the jacket- the amount of pockets! Even if you don't use them all for the intended items, there is plenty of room for just about everything you might want to carry with you. The ones I appreciated the most were the keyring clip and cord, the eyeglass pocket, the camera pocket and the front chest pocket.

A really smart touch with added protection from losing your keys

Eyeglass Pocket
One of my favorite pockets. I do not wear glasses but this pocket is perfect for my sunglasses when I don't want to carry a case. Also, I don't like wearing my sunglasses on top of my head when inside, so this solves that problem. An added bonus in the pocket is the cleaning cloth attached to the pocket on an elastic cord.

Camera Pocket
Perfect size and easy access for compact cameras. There is also a small pocket with a velcro closure within it for storing an extra memory card.

Chest Pocket

I actually liked this pocket to hold my phone. I found that it was easier to access my phone then when in the Clear Touch Pocket. More on that later

I was curious to see what the jacket would look like with all my stuff in it. I read the that the pockets are designed so that you can't see anything sticking out (ScotteVest calls this NoBulge engineering). First I tested a small water bottle in the water bottle loop located in the front pocket of the jacket. While it did add some bulk you couldn't really tell what was in there.

Next I tested the fleece with my iPad inside. It fit nicely and was pretty much unnoticeable with the jacket open or closed. However, it was clear that something was there when the jacket was zipped up and I was sitting down. The tablet also made it a bit uncomfortable due to the weight in the jacket pulling on that side. However, I'd definitely use the tablet pocket at the airport or when going out for a short walk.

X-Ray View

Inside the chest area are two Clear Touch Fabric Pockets. They are intended to be used for your cell phone, music player or other similar device. The idea of the pockets to me are better than their actual function. I tried my iPhone inside the pocket a few times and found that it fit very well. However, I found it hard to get the phone in and out due to the velcro closure on top and half zipper on the side. I like how you can use the touch screen of the phone through the pocket but I found it hard to read the phone's display through the Clear Touch. If I plan to just use my phone to listen to music, then this pocket is perfect when wired to the PAN.

I prefer keeping my cell phone in the outside, vertical chest pockets. They are roomy, provide easy access to my phone and have a small pocket within it if I want my phone more secure inside the pocket.

Overall, the Fleece 5.0 is a well thought out jacket that is a great addition to my wardrobe for travel or for day to day use. I especially look forward to wearing it in the airport. I think it will make getting through security a much easier process. Try filling the pockets with ScotteVest's intended use (refer to the included Pocket Map) or customize it to suit your needs!

Although it’s the middle of May here in Indiana, we are still having a few 40 degree mornings. Instead of dragging out my winter coat, I’ve been enjoying the comfort and gadget storage of the SCOTTEVEST Lola Jacket. Wearing this jacket allows me to hide all my gear in the jacket and leave my shoulder bag at home. Let’s take a closer look.

The Lola jacket is made of 100% quilted nylon with DuPont Teflon fabric protection that repels both water and oil based spills, while remaining machine washable. It is available three colors: Rhapsody, Sparkle and Fluff. The jacket is sized for women and comes in X-Small up to XX-Large. Guys don’t need to feel left out. SCOTTEVEST has a men’s version of this jacket called the Puffer which is available in Red and Black and sized from Small – XXX-Large.

I was sent a medium sized Lola in Rhapsody, which is a stylish Purple/Blue color with bright Yellow trim.

SCOTTEVEST products are famous for their pockets, so the Lola jacket lives up to that tradition. This jacket offers 16 pockets that allow for great gear organization.

With the jacket zipped (btw: I love the long metal zipper pulls), you have access to two zippered hand warmer pockets.

Inside the Right pocket is a removable extendable key holder, a wide elastic bottle holder and a lipstick / chapstick pocket.

In the Left pocket you’ll find a small change pocket.

The cuffs have a narrow elastic band to keep them from shimmying up your arm.

Like other SeV jackets, the Lola has a built in PAN – Personal Area Network that you can use to route your earbud cables. In the inside collar area, a flap of the quilted material is held in place with Velcro. Opening this channel will allow you to place your earbud cables so that you can easily access your music while on the go. Small rubber holders add additional cable management. This system works fine, but I did notice that if you don’t arrange the flap correctly, that the Velcro in the collar might scratch your neck. For this fact, I’d prefer just having a hole that I could fish the wires into, instead of a flap. I like the SeV Chloe jacket PAN system design a little better than the Lola’s design.

The pockets on the Left side of the jacket include a Cellphone / MP3 playerpocket at the top, with a pen pocket next to it near the zipper. This pocket is large enough to comfortably hold an iPhone 4S or Motorola Droid X with room to spare. There’s a conduit in the pocket to route the connector from your earphones.

A little lower is a zipper that opens into a large 8.5 x 8.5 inch pocket that extends to the bottom of that side. This pocket can hold a small tablet orebook reader like the Amazon Kindle Fire.

Another zipper allows access to a smaller 8.5 x 4 inch pocket on top of the 8.5 x 8.5 inch pocket. This pocket is meant to hold your passport and your ID (in the small pocket on the outer layer). The pocket works great for holding a Field Notes notebook or Moleskine Cahier notebook too.

On the Right side, you’ll find two large zippered pockets.

The upper pocket, which is accessed with a vertical zipper holds your sunglasses and includes a handy chamois cloth that is attached to an elastic cord.

A horizontally zippered pocket below the sunglasses pocket is meant to hold your digital camera. There’s even a smaller pocket inside which you can use to hold extra SD flash cards. It’s possible to place a CF sized card in that slot, but you won’t be able to Velcro the top closed.

I should note that all the interior pocket zippers have nice hard plastic pulls on them, while the exterior zippers have metal pulls.

You’ll also notice that there’s an adjustable bottom cinch cord that willhelp keep the wind and cold from blowing up your back.

Speaking of the back, that’s where the largest pocket of this jacket is located. It’s an open topped stretchy mesh pocket that is large enough to hold an iPad. I don’t think I’d want to walk around with an iPad bouncing against my back, but it also works great for holding a standard sized magazine.

I love the Lola jacket. It allows me to carry quite a bit of gear without having it all stuffed into two side pockets, which is what I usually end up doing with non-SCOTTEVEST jackets. I don’t carry tons of gear, but it’s nice to have my keys, wallet, phone, earbuds, lip baum, sunglasses clip, pen and a Field Notes notebook all stowed in the jacket so I don’t have to carry a bag. I also like that the jacket doesn’t have a lot of SeV branding. What it does have is subtle… the SeV logo on the interior lining and then a rubber SeV logo sewn into the back of the collar.

I was very surprised by how comfortable and light weight this jacket is, while still providing adequate protection from cool weather. It’s so cozy that I keep hoping for more cool mornings so I can wear it to work. It seems like the perfect weight for Fall and Spring weather, but not quite heavy enough for the dead of Winter… unless of course the winters in your area are not too cold.

The Lola jacket is made very well. I could not find any defects in the material or construction. I’m a fan of this jacket and expect it to hold up to everyday wear and tear for many cold seasons to come.

While my travels have been extensive, I can’t experience every type of travel. Occasionally I like to let my friends have the podium to tell their travel stories. Today’s post is from Scott Jordan, the founder and CEO of Scottevest, one of my sponsors. We spoke about his upcoming trip when I was in Las Vegas and invited him to guest post on my site. His recent trip to Indonesia was an eye opening experience for him and it was an interesting look what happens when a CEO has to step away from the office. Here is Scott…

Three weeks ago, I made the decision to go on a once-in-a-lifetime trip. Two weeks ago, I went on that trip. Like most things I do, it was a whirlwind process. I have not traveled much recently, despite owning one of the most innovative travel companies in the world. Traveling used to be part of my life, but my wife and I have been so dedicated to our business in the last decade that leaving for extended periods of time has been difficult. Our rather remote location (Sun Valley, ID) also makes traveling a challenge. The timing was right, however, and the opportunity was one that could not be missed.

The invitation was from a good friend of mine, author Amy Tan, to celebrate her 60th birthday (I apologize if she didn’t want her age publicized…) on a private island in Indonesia with a small group of her close friends. I was honored to be included on the list and tempted by the thought of being “stranded” with some of the most interesting people in the world, but I have to say that I almost immediately dismissed the idea of going. I am extremely committed to my company and the trip followed a very busy period in our history; my appearance on ABC’s Shark Tank. Finally, I have to admit that I am also rather attached to the internet. The thought of being “unwired” for 10+ days? Think again.

Afew factors encouraged me to change this position. Ironically, one of the reasons I thought I shouldn’t go away turned into a reason why I should. My team and I worked non-stop leading up to and immediately following Shark Tank, and I realized it was a good time to get away: to gain a new perspective and take some time to slow down and think. My wife and my team at Scottevestencouraged me (with an almost suspicious exuberance) to accept the invitation. I was crazy not to go, they said. I started to think about the company I would be in and the opportunities to learn from such diverse and accomplished people and the unprecedented chance to really “road test” (or “plane test”) my products.

I had made up my mind, but I wasn’t appropriately excited until a conversation that I had with Gary. We’ve been working with Gary for a few months, sending him gear and co-sponsoring his travels, but I didn’t meet him until the Travel Goods Association Show in Las Vegas last month. Gary is a truly inspiring man. His sense of direction? Not so inspired, surprisingly. This is a man who has explored every continent, but he could not find my booth at the Las Vegas Convention Center if his life depended on it. Maybe he’s used to using the sun to navigate.

Gary and I had dinner together one evening, and it was over dinner that I began to really understand the magnitude of what he does. He has had countless incredible experiences and thousands of stunning photographs, not a single one of which he has ever printed, he told me. I guess by the time one adventure ends, it’s on to the next. Gary mentioned that of all the people who buy and subscribe to travel magazines, most of them don’t get the chance to go anywhere. The simply love to learn about these experiences and imagine them and best they can through magazine articles, travel shows, photographs, and bloggers like Gary. I realized that I want to be a conduit in the same way so I could not only travel and share my experiences, but that I can make it easier for people. This is already something that Scottevest aspires to do, ease the hassles of travel, but it became more tangible to me as I thought about the approaching trip. After meeting with Gary, my excitement and my expectations trumped my anxiety about the hassles of travel: the days spent on plane after plane, being away from email, etc.

I departed from Sun Valley with renewed enthusiasm and with the following plan of action: to embrace the actual traveling. People often say that they love travel, but that they don’t like the actual getting there. This trip would entail a long period of “getting there,” so I decided to make the best of it. I wear Scottevest gear every day, but traveling with it was a whole new experience. It really was the best solution getting through airport security. It also gave me new ideas about what I want in the products and what might be most important. I also liked interaction face-to-face with other travelers. I engage our fans online all the time, but my preferred method is always in person.

At the LAX International Terminal I encountered an entire family of Scottevest fans. I always approach people when I see them wearing Scottevest, and this was no exception. I looked like a fool I’m sure. Green plaid shirt, red vest, and a fedora hat that my wife hates, but I walked up to this family outside McDonald’s and asked the father how he liked his vest. The daughter looked at me and said, “Hey, we saw you on Shark Tank!” It was a great interaction. The gentleman gave me some useful feedback about the sizing and position of the iPod pocket. It set the tone of the trip, and I decided that I need to be meeting travelers. My trip ended with another SeV sighting, with a man dressed head-to-toe in the Salt Lake City airport. I did the math later, he had to have at least 35 pockets…I didn’t ask if he was wearing the Travel Boxers.

Although I was committed to this project of enjoying the actual getting there (at the very least tolerating it), I have to say I was relieved when my destination was in sight. By the time I arrived on the island…via Hong Kong, via Los Angeles, via Salt Lake City, I had no idea what time or day it was. The location was stunning as I knew it would be, but you can never really imagine or anticipate that kind of beauty. Nor can you capture it. The photos I took pale in comparison to what it was really like. Of course, travel is about so much more than blue waters, beach huts and photographs. What I took away from the trip will change me and it will change my business. In future posts on my blog I will discuss the highlights of the trip and the perspective it gave me, the importance of camaraderie and company when it comes to travel and the retrospection that being “away from it all” allowed me. Like any significant trip, I could never have anticipated the things that I saw, the experiences I had, or the things that I felt. I’m excited to organize my thoughts about the trip and looking forward to planning more adventures in the near future.

I think I got the travel bug!

For the last seven years, I've had a constant companion during my fall, winter, and spring travels: A SCOTTEVEST Three.0 jacket that I bought after borrowing and testing an SeV Classic Vest on a trip to Paris.

In a 2005 review of the SeV Classic Vest, I wrote: "Unlike traditional vests, the SeV has a smooth outer shell (not unlike a windbreaker or golf jacket) with dozens of synthetic mesh pockets on the inside." I described the SeV as a "nightmare for pickpockets," and I added that "Thanks to the generous collection of pockets, I didn't need to haul a shoulder bag around."

A few months ago, Scott Jordan of SCOTTEVEST asked if I'd like to try a current model of his company's clothing. I chose the SeV Expedition Jacket for two reasons:

It has more pockets than any other SeV jacket (or possibly any other jacket, period), including a number of pockets on the outside that are useful for carrying items like guidebooks, maps, gloves, and snacks.
It's long enough to cover a blazer or suit jacket (which is a great convenience if I'm going to the opera, a fancy restaurant, or another dress-up event on a chilly and rainy night).

What makes the SeV different from other jackets:

Like other SCOTTEVEST jackets, the SeV Expedition Jacket is engineered to hold just about everything that you might want to carry whether you're sightseeing or the road.

Its 37 exterior and interior pockets can accommodate a smartphone, an e-book reader or tablet, an iPod, guidebooks and other reading material, maps, water bottles, a flashlight, sunglasses, pens, a digital camera, spare memory cards and batteries, coins, a GPS device, and more. The jacket even has a dedicated pocket for eyeglasses (with attached cleaning cloth) and a keychain on a spiral cord.

You'll also find several loops, tabs, and patches on the outside of the jacket. (The removable hook-and-loop arm patch may come in handy if you flaunt your gun-club membership at home but don't want to alarm security security screeners at airports.)

If the plethora of pockets sounds overwhelming, you may want to study SeV's large Pocket Mapin PDF format. Better yet, just buy the jacket and devise your own storage strategy. But be careful: When your jacket has 37 pockets--some with zippers that are hidden along the edges of other pockets--it can be easy to forget where you put your memory card or Metro tickets.

Other features:

The time-tested SCOTTEVEST "Weight Management System" and "NoBulge" design make the SeV Expedition Jacket comfortable and attractive even when it's loaded with books and gear. The jacket is engineered to distribute weight evenly--and after seven years of wearing SeV jackets and vests, I can testify that the concept works.
Like other SeV products, the Expedition Jacket has a "Personal Area Network" that lets you run wires from your smartphone or iPod to "BudBucket" pockets in the collar. I haven't used the PAN myself (I haven't figured out a way to conceal my Thorens record turntable in the jacket), but I'm sure the feature is handy if you enjoy being distracted byNight Moves or the Flying Dorito Brothers as you step off the curb in Paris, London, or Rome.

One improvement I'd like to see:

As much as I like the SeV Expedition Jacket, I miss the zip-off sleeves of my old SeV Three.0 jacket. In warm weather, it's nice to have the flexibility of a jacket that can be converted into a vest. (Hear that, Scott?)

But never mind what I want: If removable sleeves are important to you, you can choose from other SCOTTEVEST products such as the Revolution Jacket, the cold-weather Revolution Plus, the Tropical Jacket/Vest, or the cleverly-designed Transformer Jacket, which uses magnets instead of zippers to secure a pull-off shoulder yoke with integrated sleeves.

Bottom line:

Whether you opt for the SeV Expedition Jacket (as I did) or one of SCOTTEVEST's many other products, you'll almost certainly love your jacket, and you'll enjoy the freedom of not having to walk around Europe's cities with a shoulder bag or backpack that pickpockets can feed on.

Hitting the road for work? Don't get tripped up. Travel lessons from seasoned trekkers:

• Lighten the load. Media strategy consulting, speaking and angel investing keep Peter Shankman on the road 300 days a year.

His packing rule: Go light.

"Half of it you don't need," he told IBD.

Before journeying to Japan, he purchased a Scottevest travel jacket. Its multiple pockets stow everything from extra clothes to an iPad.

"I went to Tokyo for four days with nothing but the jacket," said Shankman, who also founded Help A Reporter Out, a media service.

• Rise and shine. "Become a morning person," Shankman said. "The first flight of the day is the least likely to be delayed."

If it's canceled, you're likelier to catch another flight the same day.

• Troubleshoot. Bad weather looming? Shankman will put a rental car on reserve in case his flight is canceled.

"Always think two steps ahead," he said.

• Plug in. Laptops and mobile devices are your lifeline, so feed them regularly.

"Always be charging," Shankman said. "If I have 10 minutes somewhere, I will take those 10 minutes for charging."

• Make connections. A social type, Shankman posts a "Where's Peter Today?" online travel calendar listing cities he's visiting. He'll also tweet his status if he's killing time in an airport.

"I have met some of the coolest people in the world that way," Shankman said.

• Dish. Looking for good eats? "If you want to find a local place, ask a flight attendant," Shankman said.

• Make nice. "Just smile. It is amazing what you can get — how helpful other people will be — if you just smile," Shankman said.

• Get specific. Taking a long flight? Ask for details about the plane. So advises Kim Atkinson, senior vice president of Forbes Travel Guide.

"This is important when flying internationally," she said. "Older aircraft may not have seat-side outlets for recharging your laptop, or you might need to bring along an adapter to plug in."

• Join the jet set. "Whether you sign up for a yearly airline club membership or just buy a day pass, airport clubs are the best way to find a quiet spot to work," Atkinson said.

• Be loyal. Sure you're trying to rack up frequent flier miles. Other reasons to be airline loyal: perks like free checked bags and early boarding.

Some airlines serve meals to top fliers first.

SCOTTEVEST is based in the USA however delivery to the UK was prompt with more than adequate packaging to protect the jacket in transit. The jacket looks just like a normal stylish jacket from the outside, which if you think about the value of the tech you may wish to stash inside it, is a good thing. From the outside you really cannot tell that it has 20 advanced pockets or that the sleeves whip off as it gracefully transforms into a vest.

Opening the jacket up there can only be one thought passing through you mind - "Wow that's a lot of pockets!". Of course that is only the pockets you can see because delving deeper there are many more and each with a specific and well thought out function. It took me a few hours of loading different items into the jacket to convince myself that I had found them all and figured out what they do.

If you happen to not be of the male variety you can just open the dedicated sunglasses pocket and pull out the bungee attached microfiber glass cleaning cloth. It's good for sunglasses, phone screens, cameras and the iPad screen. Of course being a Scottevest it also doubles up as a map of the pocket locations and what they do.

This attention to detail and thought is obvious in every aspect of the jacket's design. There are pockets for pens, an ID card, mobiles such as the iPhone and even a secure passport pocket, all exactly where you would want them to be.

It transforms

As the name suggests this jacket has a trick or two up its sleeve. In literally a second or two you can whip the sleeves off the jacket and fold them up into a bundle ready to stow in the special sleeve pocket. Many alternatives rely on cumbersome zips but their TEC-MAG system really does the job. Each strong rare earth magnet is barely detectable yet working together they quite easily keep the sleeves attached during normal use.

It is an amazingly handy feature, especially on those nice sunny spring days where everything is fine when the sun is out, but when it disappears behind a cloud the temperature can drop noticeably. On the bike you can make the whole operation quicker by whipping the sleeves off and stashing them quickly in the iPad pocket without even bothering to fold them up.

The iPad Pocket

The sleeves are a great feature but in many ways the iPad pocket is the killer feature. These days attending a meeting often requires a tablet computer, a mobile phone, pen and pad of paper; tablets haven't quite replaced the humble pen and paper. Previously all of this has required a bag or folder of sorts however with this jacket you can quite feasibly travel to a meeting with everything you need, all safely and un-obviously stashed in your jacket. That is convenience and security all in one package.

Fit & Size

The temptation is to order a size larger than you think you will need in order to provide room for all the gear you can now carry with you. This is not necessary because a jacket in the size you usually take will easily hold a respectable amount of gear without looking bulky on you.

Other Uses

As mentioned the jacket is great for tech enable meetings and cycling however while wearing it a few other scenarios became obvious. Surviving at festivals requires all sorts of little bits and bobs which this jacket simply takes in its stride. For amateur photographers it is also a boon. You can easily fit a CSC camera, additional lens, filters and tripod into the various internal pockets.

What Could be Improved?

Other jackets seem somewhat less useful after wearing a SCOTTEVEST for a while however there are a few areas which could possibly be improved in my opinion. An iPad pocket either side would provide more flexibility for carrying a tablet and a reasonable sized pad of paper or documents. The pocket on the other side to the iPad pocket is currently about half the size and so limits what can be stowed there.

For years, airline passengers have struggled to fit valuables and on-board essentials into two small carry-on bags. Smart phone, iPad, pocket camera, flash cards, passport, pen, notebook, snacks, water bottle, sunglasses, wallet, medicines, map and guide book—to carry all this requires at least a small tote, consuming half of your carry-on allowance. Enter Scottevest, an incredibly successful company whose goal is to free up your hands, whether you are negotiating airport security or hiking in the Sierras.

I (Mary) bought my first Scottevest back in 2008. As a photographer and journalist, I quickly realized the value of being able to stash accessories in the vest’s zippered pockets. When traveling abroad I would keep a small wallet in an outside pocket (for quick access to tip money) and valuable items—phone, flash cards and identification—on the inside. When I discovered that I could put my vest in a bin and send it through the x-ray machine, I was elated. I had just freed up a second bag for heavier gear.

Today, Scottevest offers a range of pocket-intensive clothing, from boxer shorts and button-down shirts to cargo pants and puffer jackets. Instead of outsized logos and ephemeral styling, Scottevest goes for durability, functionality and classic shapes.

ESTHER EXPEDITION: WEARING MY CARRY-ON

Anyone who’s looked at pictures of the expedition must have noticed that in nearly every picture I’m wearing the same vest, whether I was conferring with party secretaries or slurping soup or goofing off. If you couldn’t see the vest, it was probably hiding under another layer on a cold day.

Yep, every day for a month, I was wearing my used-to-be-brand-new Scottevest. It’s still like new after hard wear and several launderings. And yes, I ordered a men’s vest, because it fit me better and it’s longer in the back.

Before this, I’ve used my favorite shoulder purse or backpack for carry-on and daypack purposes. In them, everything has a place and I make an effort to put each thing back in its place. This is an important ADHD tool. Otherwise, I’ve run back into the house hunting my whatever while everyone else is already out the door and on the way to the airport.

But when either of those bags is loaded, it’s not long before I’m experiencing every ounce via a nagging, squirmy ache between my shoulder blades.

With the Scottevest, I wear my carry-on and don’t even notice about the weight (not a bad addition to myAmerican-in-China weight loss plan–”weight lifting” all day without feeling the extra effort).

Another big plus is security. A few years ago my prescription eyeglasses were picked out of my backpack in the chaotic push-and-shove of a market far away from home. After spending the rest of that trip not able to read, I’ve been slightly paranoid when everything important is riding out of sight on my back. With the Scottevest, I can choose to have nothing in the back, and hug everything in front. Besides, I think all those pockets would just leave a thief confused and dizzy.

There are less expensive travel vests out there, but I rate the Scottevest high above the others I’ve seen because the Scottevest pockets are integral to the design, not sewn onto the outside. Maybe this wouldn’t matter to svelter people than I, but I don’t need any additional bubbly bulges.

Scottevest advertises 22-24 pockets. I never did manage an exact count. I just know that every couple of days, you could have heard me shouting, “I found another one!” Photos of the vest aren’t helpful with counting, because there are pockets hidden within pockets.

In my vest, every pocket (that I finally discovered) was populated with pretty much the same items every day. I knew exactly where to reach for my passport or chapstick or afternoon meds or whatever. That’s a lot of mind-easing for an ADD brain that’s always subconsciously tense wondering what it’s forgotten this time.

The vest came with a card in each pocket suggesting how to use that particular pocket. But I suppose each “vesty” comes up with his or her own most convenient uses. And each trip has its own needs. Here’s how I used mine for this China research expedition.

Vest Front

Upper outside pocket #1: Business card case. Current public transport ticket and/or multi-travel card. Hotel room key or card.

Upper outside pocket #2: Sunglasses case. Petzl headlamp–about the smallest out there. It’s handy during electric outage or anytime a flashlight is needed–especially when it’s right there at hand in it’s pocket.

“Handwarmer” pocket #1: Antibacterial wipes. Bandanna to use as towel, sweat wiper, napkin, personal table cloth, etc., etc. Tissue packet–always at hand when t.p. isn’t where you expect it to be. And there’s still room to warm a hand.

“Handwarmer” pocket #2: Available for the unexpected–and for warming a hand.

Inside left side

Upper “phone” pocket: Extra camera batteries, memory card, flash drive.

Pen pocket: My favorite sort of pen.

Lower “ID” pocket: Sweetener packets, since apparently nobody but me needs them in China.

Deep pocket: Water bottle. Kindle. Umbrella. Journal (not pictured–see what I mean about losing things if I don’t put them where they belong?). Magic Wand Scanner in it’s hard case.

Shallower pocket on front of deep pocket: Passport, Boarding pass (not pictured), my favorite travel wallet.

Inner right side

Pen pocket: pen

Phone Pocket: phone

Zipper pocket below phone pocket: Spider tripod. Camera (not pictured because it’s taking the picture) in its wrap-around case.

Big zipper pocket: All the stuff that usually is in the “cosmetics” section of my purse–chapstick, toothbrush, lotion, eye drops, lozenges, etc.

”iPad pocket”

This pocket is the bottom half of the vest back, side seam to side seam, zipper to the bottom hem. There may be 20-something pockets, but this is the one that makes people say, “Oh, wow.” ( or “ha ha” or “flat-butt”).

This was the perfect place to carry and protect Esther Nelson’s China, the Shutterfly photobook that was our reference/reminder of specific details to look for and a wonderful conversation starter that yielded unexpected stories and connections.

Message to the folks at Scottevest:

You’ve created a nearly perfect travel vest. After wearing the vest all day every day for a month, though, I wished for just a couple of adjustments and 1 addition.

Addition:

I wish I’d brought along a lightweight, fold-up backpack for the occasional item (acquired in the middle of a day) that was too bulky or poky to fit in a vest pocket. Maybe that would be a bonus you could add to a vest purchase.

Adjustments:

If the zipper pulls had a rounded loop where it attaches to the zipper, they would pull more easily from whichever angle they were grasped. With the square loop, I often had to juggle the zipper around to get it straight so it it wouldn’t hang up.

If the deep pocket had an elastic strip sewed into the vest side of the pocket with sections (like in one of the hand warmer pockets, the deep pocket would hold water bottle, umbrella, etc. upright.

One of the beauties of the Scottevest is that it’s adaptable to each person’s preferences for pocket use. S0-o-o-o how about if the key holder and clip with lens cleaner were fastened into the vest by clips and if several or all pockets had rings so the wearer can choose the pocket to fasten the key ring or lens cleaner clip into? As it is now, the cleaner clip was not where I wanted it and I kept getting tangled up with it.

My travel companion liked my vest so much that I left it in China with her. So I need to get another one before my next trip. Since I’m almost always too hot, I think I’ll go for the lightweight vest this time.

Review: ScotteVest Transformer Jacket

I’m not sure about you but personally I get warm very easily. There’s nothing worse than overdressing for cold weather outside and then baking when one ventures indoors. CES is a prime example of this at it’s worse. The early morning temperatures in Las Vegas are always cool in January so you want to dress warmly for the ride or walk into the convention center. However, once you’re inside it’s like you were magically catapulted into the Amazon rain forest. I’ve made the mistake before of dressing for winter at CES and paid for it inside the convention hall ending up drenched in sweat.

If there’s one thing that’s been a constant for me over the years at CES it’s ScotteVest clothing. I really appreciate the seemingly endless pockets ScotteVest clothing seems to offer as it allows me to carry along all the gear necessary to cover an event like CES without having to bring a Sherpa along to haul it.

Avoiding those baggage fees

This past week, the Travel Goods Association held its annual industry event at which participants showcased new travel products and an anniversary was celebrated. Twenty-five years ago, Travelpro added a telescoping handle and two roller-skate wheels to a suitcase to create the first rollaboard luggage that’s been a huge boon to travelers ever since. (In case you wondered, the invention of wheeled luggage occurred in 1970 when US Luggage attached four wheels to the bottom of its suitcases.)

Among the many gadgets and new luggage at the show, two products stood out. One is an unusual article of clothing and the other is a suitcase, but they both have something in common. Each provides a solution for making travel less of a hassle, particularly when it comes to carrying stuff onto planes.

Ever since airlines discovered they could turn losses into profits by charging us for checked luggage, we’ve all been challenged to see just how much we can bring aboard and save those fees.

Of course, at the same time, the airlines have been working hard to find new ways to gouge us. Spirit Airlines is now charging $20 to $30 for bringing aboard a carry-on bag, and British Airways is charging $90 for a business class passenger to select a seat prior to check-in.

Scottevest’s Transformer Jacket

Scottevest is known for making jackets and other clothes that have a huge number of pockets designed to hold just about everything, a godsend for techies who like to travel with their gadgets. This year the company has come up with what I think is its best jacket yet, the Transformer.

The softly lined jacket can be transformed into a vest nearly instantly, even while you’re wearing it. Unlike other jackets with removable sleeves that are held in place with zippers, the Transformer’s sleeves attach to the jacket using magnets. That makes adding or removing a snap (or in this case a click, click, click) and gives you a vest with the same storage capacity. And what do you do after removing the sleeves? Stuff it into the pocket designed just for them.

It’s the latest model in a constantly evolving line of products for men and women, and it's popular with frequent travelers and the tech community. The 20 pockets, each uniquely sized, are designed to accommodate specific items. There’s a clear pocket for a smartphone that you can use without removing, and pockets for business cards, glasses, a camera and extra memory, travel documents, keys, and a water bottle. There are pockets for a USB drive, a pen and loose change. Lastly, there’s a pocket specifically made to hold an iPad.

Here's another garment that helps conquer baggage fees: SCOTTEVEST travel jackets, which basically double as carry-on bags. Welcome back to Thrillable Hours!

For newer Legal Nomads readers: a little background. I decided to start the Thrillable Hours series as a way to spotlight lawyers and former lawyers who were doing interesting things. On my travels, so many people have asked if I regretted my law degree or years working long hours in New York. I found myself explaining again and again that my legal education served me well, that my time in New York gave me skills I am grateful for. While I feel much more fulfilled and excited about my line of work now, at no point did I regret my prior career. This got me thinking: how did other lawyers feel? Be it those who left the practice of law altogether, or those who opted for something a little less conventional, I wanted to learn about their stories and how their legal education influenced the way they saw the world.

This new instalment is with Scott Jordan, who co-founded the popular travel technology clothing line Scottevest with his wife Laura. It was my friend Gary (from Everything Everywhere) who put us in touch; Gary works with Scottevest and thought Scott would make a great Thrillable Hours candidate. This word-of-mouth referral has become a great source of new interview subjects, so if anyone has a lawyer in mind for the series, please send them my way!

What made you decide to follow a less conventional path than typical law school graduates? Was there a particular moment that catalyzed the decision for you?

I did practice law for a while when I graduated from law school. I never fully intended to, but I did really well in law school, and I was offered a great deal of money at large firm. I like to call this the “golden handcuffs” stage. I was always looking for a way to escapt the law, basically. I realized I was miserable…I tried to move away from the strictly legal work by accepting a partnership position at an internet company (thinking I would be more involved in the business side), but I was always considered the “lawyer.” It was a long and winding path, but I finally realized that the best way – maybe the only way – for me to go on as a businessman was to start my own company.

What do you find most fulfilling about your current job?

I control my own destiny. My income is not limited by the hours that I bill, I am not dealing with clients, so my work is exactly what I want it to be. My dealings with lawyers are as limited as possible. I love the environment at my company – the fast pace, the ideas, the energy, the people – it makes for a totally different experience than I had in law.

Do you have any advice for professionals who are interested in leaving conventional private practice but concerned about what is out there?

If you’re miserable, you owe it to yourself to make the change. When you take the risk, the worst thing that will happen is that you go bankrupt, which in this country isn’t that big of a deal. Being unhappy is always a big deal.

How did your legal education inform the way you see the world today? Do you still identify yourself as a lawyer?

I identify myself very deliberately as an EX-lawyer. My legal education does enable me to understand the legal issues that businesses face. It allows me to filter them and to recognize those that are important. I am not afraid of the legal issues, in short, and a brief history of my company will prove that. Overall, I was good at law but very unhappy – in one sense, this dissatisfaction pushed me to do something totally different, and something that I love. For that I’m grateful.

What do you have to say to those who tell me lawyers can’t have fun?

They’re right! From my perspective, I’d agree. The nature of the field – the pressures and the restrictions – does not, in my experience, propagate “fun.”

The Scottevest Transformer … a quick & dirty review

It is no secret that I really enjoy Scottevest clothing. Ever since I first purchased aScottevest original vest, this company’s clothing has transformed how I pack to walk about the door. With the Scottevest original vest, Fleece 5.0 jacket/vest, hoodie sweatshirt, sport coat, cargo pants and button down shirt in my wardrobe … some purchased by me, some sent to me by Scottevest … recently the new SeV Transformer jacket arrived at my door.

I had planned to hold on writing about the Transformer until the weather turned warmer to write about it as both a jacket and a vest, however a ‘lighting review’ of it that appeared on Gizmodo got me wondering … what exactly to people expect from their jacket?

Personally, I tend to load my Scottvest clothing fairly heavy, with my Travel Vest and Fleece 5.0 being loaded pretty similarly, which you can see here. The Transformer has 20 pockets, and while it is a lighter jacket/vest than the Fleece 5.0, it is still designed to hold just about anything a user could want to stuff in their pockets for a day out, or a quick day of travel.

In Gizmodo’s review of the Scottevest Transformer, author Sam Biddle wrote “The Transformer boasts a “personal area network” (hahaha) that packages all of your stuff (?) into twenty different pockets. This is an appalling glut of pockets and zippers and pouches, none of which make obvious their purpose.”

As a long time user of the Scottevest clothing, I was originally drawn to the clothing for two reasons, 1) the ability to carry a netbook or iPad inside the jackets and vests 2) the ability to wire my headsets through the jacket and vests, untangling the wire, since I do not like blue tooth headsets. The personal area network is ideal for throwing your phone or MP3 player in your jacket and having your headsets always ready for use and easy to stow when not in use.

But let’s get past the personal area network, because not everyone is going to wire up their jacket, vest, sport coat, sweatshirt the way I have … I am confused by Mr. Biddle’ s statement that “The pockets, too small to be useful,“ in his Gizmodo review, which cuts to the crux of my question … what exactly to people expect from their jacket?

Let’s start by going down the list of what I packed inside my Scottevest Transformer two Sunday’s ago as I headed off for work.

1 – iPhone 4

1 – iPhone 3G

1 – Headsets wired into jacket

1 – 11″ MacBook Air

1 – Kindle Touch 3G

1 – Canon Powershot G11

1 – Oakley Flak Jacket sunglasses

1 – Apple MagSafe AC power supply

1 – iPhone USB cord

1 – USB SD card reader

1 – 20oz Pepsi

1 – Bagel & Cream Cheese

2 – Pens

1 – Moleskine notebook

1 – pack of business cards

All of these gear was comfortably was stowed in my Scottevest Transformer jacket, while wearing two cameras via the BlackRapid harness system and other gear via theThink Tank Skin Kit harness (except the Pepsi and Bagel which I ate and drank on the train up to work).

For the past few days I have been out with the Scottevest Transformer jacket I have been packing light. An 11″ MacBook Air inside the jacket, and swapping a Canon 28-70f2.8 and 70-200f2.8 from the right side pocket. To put this in perspective the Canon 70-200f2.8 is 7.8 inches in length and 3.4 inches in diameter, not counting the tripod collar … and the lens slips into the side pocket without any problems.

The Scottevest Transformer is unique in how it converts from jacket to vest. Rather than the using zip off sleeves, The Transformer uses magnets that hold whole a whole sleeve section to the jacket , instead of two separate sleeves. The magnet design allows a user to make their jacket a vest in less then 5 seconds and put the sleeves back in in a matter of seconds. Using the Scottevest Transformer with camera straps, and the BlackRapid harness system I have found the magnets that hold the sleeves in place durable and reliable. I would not try picking the jacket up by its sleeves when loaded, but typically I pick jackets up by their collar, regardless of the jacket. Should the jacket’s magnets had issues I am sure I would have pulled the sleeves off countless times … although Mr. Biddle at Gizmodo is quoted as stating “The magnets for the sleeves are too weak,” leaving me wondering what exactly he is doing with the sleeves.

So while I hope to write to a longer review of the Scottevest Transformer jacket, Mr. Biddle’s review of the jacket has me wondering if we had been wearing the same jacket.

Below are a few photos of my Scottevest Transformer jacket, loaded with an 11″ MacBook Air and Kindle; my Canon G11 in the sunglasses pocket and my Canon 70-200f2.8L in my right side pocket … as well as a photo of me wearing a loaded vest with my gear while out looking for some photos.

That Scottevest coat is actually part of a line of coats for men and women. They have a couple different types I THINK. They look like typical trench coats, but hold a LOT of junk. Great for someone who doesn't want to carry a purse or a small messenger bag full of electronics. :) They balk at the price tag BUT... all winter coats these days cost an arm and a leg unless they're cheaply made/look terrible.
