Five sexy ways to carry your valuables safely

We all want to be safe when we travel. It’s a given. Crime on the road is almost always unexpected and can really mess up your trip. There are some situations we simply can’t prepare for (Godzilla, for example, or the Spanish Inquisition), but we can be smart about what we wear and how we carry our valuables.

Safety-wear is a dangerous can of worms for the fashionably inclined. I am not someone who can handle wearing a fanny pack (or “bum bag” for those of you who are British and appalled that I said “fanny”). I don’t like things that are too bulky and I completely disapprove of anything that is aggressively “anti-theft;” it usually means “heavy” and “ugly.” One should not have to sacrifice their sense of style for safety.

There’s good news: one does not. Here are five sexy ways to carry your valuables safely:

Money belt

“That’s not sexy!” you might proclaim. There was a time when I would have agreed with you. However, this was before I discovered the secret joy of the money belt: put it under your clothes and pull it tight. It shrinks your waist or flattens your stomach; it basically does everything Spanx would if you bothered wearing them while traveling. Be careful you don’t pull too tight or you’ll have an uncomfortable breathing situation which could lead to friction burns, and make sure the clothes you wear over it are skimming, not form-fitting. Most importantly, make sure you position it so you can get to it without disrobing publicly. That will invite a different kind of crime.

Thigh sheath

The thigh sheath is arguably the sexiest way to carry your valuables. Scott reviewed the PortaPocket, and I’m into that, but I like the sexy lambskin Wallet with Garters above ($19.95, and yes, it comes in other colors), or for vegans, the ruggedness of the Medical Trauma Thigh Pouch in “Coyote Tan” ($89.95). It calls forth images of video game and film heroines. Plus, if someone’s stealing from a pouch on the inside of your thigh, you’re going to notice. I recommend wearing it under a dress or skirt for full concealment.Bag that zips

I will always argue that a fanny pack doesn’t make you safer; it makes you look like a tourist. Don’t buy one. Backpacks can be easy to pickpocket, as can most tote bags. Stick with messenger bags and purses that zip for carrying valuables. Even a bag that zips can be a liability in a loud place, as you won’t hear a gentle pickpocketer. Another common trick: someone will start a conversation with you to distract you from their friend, who is quickly digging for your wallet. You best bet is to keep your bag zipped and hold it under your arm so that you can see the zipper pull at all times. Don’t bother putting things in the outside pockets unless you’re willing to lose them.

Tilley hat

Tilley hats are pretty darn cool looking. Flip through the gallery in Serious traveling hats and you’re likely to find something you like. As an added bonus, each one has a hidden compartment right on top of the head. That’s a good place for your stuff.

Secret pockets

And, speaking of hidden compartments, one safety feature many stylish garments already include is the secret pocket. You’ll find these in perfectly respectable (even sexy!) coats, on the inner rims of some shorts and all over the place onScotteVest products, including fashionable jackets and form-fitting pullovers. When you’re packing, choose the item with the secret pocket over the item without, and you may find yourself freed from carrying a bag in some situations — and much safer than you would be if you had your wallet and phone in your back pocket.

I mean, even if you don’t get pickpocketed, I hear about a lot of things ending up in the toilet that way.

Who is James Coats?

James Coats was born in Miami, Florida August 9^th, 1973.  His interest in science, nature and the magical world around us, began early.  As a child, James’ part Native American mother taught him how to listen and be a part of nature.  For years, James had a wild raccoon as a pet.  Racky, the raccoon, would sleep curled around James’ head at night.  His father taught him about animal behavior and survival skills.  James learned how to build underground shelters, tree-houses, and Native American shelters.  When James was 15, he built an obstacle endurance course in his back yard that consisted of a ropes course, trapeze, repelling wall and shooting range.  The course was so impressive the local ROTC and law enforcement came to train on his course.

No electronic device was safe around James.  He would disassemble electronics and recreate them as something new.  One summer fan, a tape recorder and an erector set was reconfigured as James’ very own robot.

Christmas morning 1981, James received his first magic set: the Marshall Brodien magic set.  He was instantly hooked, and soon began performing magic shows for his friends and family.

Soon after, James’ father lost his job and the family traveled the Southern states so James’ father could find a new job.  Nightly magic shows by James, kept the family entertained and united as they traveled from town to town homeless.  For 18 months, James’ mother kept him and his sister entertained by visiting local attractions and historical spots.  They finally settled in North Central Florida.

James graduated from  high school in 1992.  He worked his way through College and completed his Associates of Art Degree in 1998.  During his studies became fascinated with science and took every class he could while attending the University of Florida for Micro Biology and Marketing.  While attending UF, James also developed his magic act.  

During his education at University of Florida, James created a new magic effect called, Mind Bender: a metal spoon that appeared to bend with the power of the mind.  The magic world took notice, and in 1999, James was asked to head up one of the largest magic manufacturing and consulting companies in the world. 

Since 2003, James has consulted and lent his name to some of the largest names in the entertainment industry: Disney, Coca Cola, Sharpie, Universal Studios, Siegfried and Roy, Lance Burton, BAE Systems and the USMC. 

James was instrumental in redeveloping an old form of magic called, Pickpocket Magic.   Pickpocket magic utilizes misdirection used by street pickpockets and creates it into a form of magic to amaze and entertain.  James interviewed actual street pickpockets to learn their secrets.  Then, James teamed up with state, government, and local law enforcement agencies to teach pickpocket and travel scam prevention.  James impressed people with his skill and finesse and was soon featured in his own 1-hour national TV special. 

James was a natural in front of the camera and was soon featured in his own TV series:  Magic World as well as his own radio talk show.   James wanted to utilize his diverse background to inspire, educate, and entertain.  Presently, James is working with producers of the History Channel on his new television series titled, History’s Secret Spaces, and has his own government and military technology consulting company www.shadowconsultingllc.com.

Rene takes a look at the SCOTTEVEST Quantum Jacket, Fleece 5.0 Jacket, and Ultimate Hoodie, and talks to Scott about SeV’s plans for the iPad!

As I explain in the video, this isn’t stuff I was sent to review, it’s stuff I bought to use. Based on a combination of the harsh Canadian winters, my proclivity for carrying a lot of gadgets around with me, and the traveling I’ve been doing to CES, Macworld, and now GDC next week, I went all in and have had good results.

The Quantum Jacket’s weather resistant outer shell combined with the warmth of the Fleece 5.0 kept me going on those days when it’s so cold your skin hurts on contact with the air. The dedicated, capacitive-touch friendly pockets for iPhone and iPod touch were great (though I need to make or get some capacitive gloves to really get the most out of them).

When traveling (especially this year with all the crazy security) being able to store an iPhone, iPod touch, cameras all the cables and headsets, not one but two mophie juice packs [TiPb Store link], my passport, papers, pens, and everything else — and just take it off and lay it in a security tray and then walk through the scanner is priceless. (Getting an inch around the “one carry-on rule” this year — beyond priceless).

Outdoor clothier Nau was nearly a victim of its own grand vision.

When Eric Reynolds set out to launch an eco-friendly outdoor-clothing maker in Portland, Ore. in 2005, he spared no expense. Recruits included Chris Van Dyke, a former brand marketing director at Nike, and Mark Galbraith, director for technical products at Patagonia. Reynolds had plenty of experience himself: In 1974, at age 21, he cofounded Marmot, now a $107 million (sales) outdoor-gear company.

His new outfit's name was Nau (pronounced "now"), the word for "welcome" among New Zealand's Maori people. Reynolds raised $35 million, most of it from institutions and wealthy individuals like Seagate Chief Executive Stephen Luczo.

What Nau had in vision, connections and capital it lacked in fiscal discipline. Reynolds, who had little interest in running a new company, stepped aside in 2006. Van Dyke kept spending. To outgreen the competition he shelled out a 20% premium for raw materials like organic cotton and recycled polyester; he paid a similar bounty to use factories in China that adhered to strict labor standards. Van Dyke also buffed Nau's do-good image by donating 5% of revenue to nonprofits like Mercy Corps, a humanitarian aid organization, and Kiva, which allows users to make online microloans in the developing world. (Patagonia sets aside only 1% of its sales for philanthropy.)

Nau opened a lush Web site and four 2,000-square-foot stores in Portland, Chicago, Boulder, Colo. and Belleview, Wash. Having stores meant he had to put something in them, so Nau created 130 products, from $450 waterproof, recycled-polyester jackets to $110 women's twill cotton Chinos.

By the end of 2007 Nau's payroll had swelled to 60 full-time employees, all with health coverage and 401(k) plans, and it was on its way to opening an eighth store. The company was hemorrhaging cash: In only two years it had burned through the entire $35 million Reynolds had raised and needed another $10 million to roll out its fall 2008 line. "We were heading off a cliff," says Galbraith, 49. By May 2008 Nau had no choice but to shutter the retail stores, fire all but 6 employees and look for a white knight.

The company found one a month later in Gordon Seabury, the 43-year-old chief executive of Horny Toad, a socially minded apparel company in Santa Barbara, Calif. Seabury bought Nau's trademarks, office equipment, Web site, product designs and marketing material for "under $5 million" in cash. He summarily slashed Nau's product line to 75 items, expanded distribution through 60 smaller U.S. retailers and a handful of short-term pop-up stores, and curtailed Nau's charitable activities to 2% of revenue. Consolidating warehousing and shipping activities shaved six percentage points off Seabury's overhead. Seabury figures Nau will turn its first profit this year, at the $5 million to $10 million sales mark. Van Dyke left after the acquisition.

As for Galbraith, he stayed on as Nau's general manager. "We tried to do too many things at once," he concedes. "To be innovative and profitable, you have to choose a few things and excel at them."
