A letter to all Scott Hutchisons.

The Proposal: It is my understanding that you have my name. Or am I just borrowing yours? You see our name or use Scott Hutchison on a daily basis. People you interact with, friends, family and acquaintances all understand our name to be YOURS. But what is in a name? I would argue that it is intertwined and integral to your sense of self. By no means is a name a reflection of your self, or the defining factor in who you are. I can safely assume that every Scott Hutchison is a unique individual and likely very different from one another. Yet we have a deep and rare connection that other people do not. Our name.

Who am I? This Scott Hutchison ( I ) am a visual artist currently living and working in Virginia, USA. The central theme to most of my painting and drawing for the last 8 years has been the self. I have purposely imposed limitations in my work and focused primarily with variations on my face. However, I would like to expand on this idea and I propose a collaboration with all the Scott Hutchisons I can find in coming together to make a different type of self portrait. It would be a multi-faceted drawn, animated portrait of multiple Scott Hutchisons.

Why? This piece deals with the question of self. Who are we? Is a name important to the individual? Secondly, technology has made the world feel smaller. It changes us and has a profound effect on the individual. In regards to sharing a name with someone else? I have found 30 plus Scott Hutchisons online. I am not sure if this muddies the waters, or clarifies who I am. But I want to investigate and to continue to ask these questions and use my art to illustrate this idea.

What I need: Would you like to take part? IF your name is Scott Hutchison all I would need is the permission to use your likeness and a short bio. SUBMIT YOUR IMAGE WITH THIS FORM

What I am proposing to do with your image you send me?

Drawing: I will be drawing your portrait in graphite on a sheet of 20" x 24" Fabrianno paper. See the image on the left as an example. The drawings will be marketed in shows nationally for the 2014-2015 calendar year. If I show a drawing of you, I will display a short bio of you next to your image.

Animation: I will also scan the drawings and digitize them; creating a movie that will randomly mix-up all our mouths, eyes and noses. All the Scott Hutchisons will be reorganized into new faces in this movie.

Want a free portrait drawing?

What: I wish to add more faces to my portfolio of portraits which will coincide with the launch of my commissions page on this website. If you have seen my work online you will notice the majority of my work is self portraiture. For the last eight years I have focused on the "self" (me). I have drawn and painted countless figures as well. Now, I would like to offer my experience as an artist to those that may be interested in commissioning a portrait drawing. I have twenty years of experience and hands-on knowledge of figure drawing and I would like to begin sharing my work in this way while at the same time having a little fun. So I need your help.

To help build up that portfolio I will be offering one free portrait drawing to someone out there in the nether of the internets.

How to Apply: Firstly, you have to use Facebook and become a fan on my Facebook account. (I hate that it is called a "fan" - but so be it.) Anyways, by November 10th of this year I will be announcing on Facebook the terms and details of how to apply. If you are a fan you can apply. That's it. One individual will be chosen at random to have their portrait drawn. Remember, I am only offering this free drawing to an individual whom has followed me over the years, or is a current 'Fan" at the time of submission.

If you win: 1) I will require a high quality image from you. (Plus a signed release form so I can use your image and name for promotion) 2) I will choose the drawing medium, size and style. 3) Once finished the drawing will be posted on facebook and other social media sites. 4) Lastly, the drawing will be sent to you. Free. All I will ask is that you pay for shipping costs and packing materials. (Hopefully it's in the US, but we can discuss other countries if you are willing to pay for the shipping.)

Drawing Marathon Demo @ The Art League

Today, the Art League held a drawing marathon. The marathon was a benefit to raise funds for additional classrooms that are being built for next session. $30 dollars went a long way at this event. It paid for a full day (10am - 10pm ) of models and art instruction. The Art League supplied quite a few models and a number of instructors were giving demonstrations if you wished to watch.

As an instructor at the Art League I was invited to come to the event and do a free 2 hour drawing demonstration. I wish I had more documentation of the event and the process I used to draw this piece. The photos here are the results of the 2 hour pose.

The drawing is on Canson paper. I began the under layer or sketch with vine charcoal. It is an easily erasable charcoal, perfect for finding anatomy and proportions. Next, I applied the shadows and highlights with a black and white conte pencil. The conte pencils kept the piece from looking overworked or blended. Two hours is not very long, so I tried to retain a lot of the paper as a middle tone. I did little blending, instead I used the linear nature of the pencils and the parallel line systems ( or hatch ) to add movement, energy and direction of the form. The final bright lights were done with conte crayon. Hope you enjoy the images.

My work has changed a lot over the years. The reason it has varied so greatly is due to the non-linear experiential way in which I learned this craft as well as a need to keep my work personally exciting. Some artists are content to work in the same style or approach to painting over decades. However, I need to tinker, experiment and get myself into trouble. It is as much about the discovery and the journey as it is the end result.

To put it simply, before I begin I always ask myself "What am I trying to say, and what is the most important element(s) in this image?" This is often the deciding factor in my choice of medium and the approach I take with the work.

I am an artist because art is difficult. It changes and complicates me. Art has taught me that I must be willing to adapt and evolve. Art is non-linear, automatic, and thoughtful.

Adirondacks Lake Center for the Arts - Solo Show

The four animations pictured here are from my August 2012 Show at The Adirondacks Lake Center for the Arts.
The show title was: Faces, Forms, Illusions. There are multiple galleries at the Arts Center, and their walls are all painted in dark hues.
The gallery space where my work was displayed was saturated in a bold red color. It was striking and liked the contrast.

In many ways I see Blur as a fairly complex and honest self portrait. As I drew this animation I began to realize what it represents for me. Like all of my work, this piece is introspective. It pushes me to ask questions of myself and it reflects a frustration and struggle I have with my place in this world. Who am I? What is important in this life? How do I achieve balance? I am an artist, father, son, husband, friend and teacher. They do not all work together and therefore I struggle. With nashing teeth and clenched fists I am pushed and pullled. Life can be taxing and I have yet to realize my eyes are partially closed as I get lost in its dizzying spell.	The original reference footage for Blur.

Collabortation - 50 Man Machine

The images here are from a performance by me and the band 50 Man Machine at Witlows on Wilson in Clarendon Virginia on Thursday the 31st of May 2012.

This collaboration was my first time projecting video onto 50 Man Machine. The projection is a live performance done in real time. I use vdmx to combine, collage and render various effects. (Both stock footage and original video artwork were used in this performance)

The images here are from a CD release party for the Washington DC band Koshari. This was a collaboration between Koshari, Scott Hutchison and Collier Hyams (Lead band member of 50 Man Machine). Collier and Scott produced the images and movies that were projected over the band while performing. Our goal was to create an atmosphere unique to each song. The projection is a multi-layered video experience. Scott Hutchison used vdmx to combine, collage and render various effects in real time. (Both stock footage and original video work were used in this performance)

I worked on this piece off and on for 3 years and abandoned it's original intention. (It took me 3 years to realize that this piece was not working and thought all was lost. What a bummer!) So I scrapped the whole idea. I still have the paintings and the digital scans and I put them together with new audio and made Blowfish. This is a video showcasing the piece. Part of the animation plays at the end.

ARTIST STATEMENT

From one day to the next, life’s experiences are compounded. This accumulated knowledge influences and helps shape our personality. Changes may be subtle or drastic depending on the circumstances. Therefore my work asks, “Who am I?”, “Who am I becoming?”, and “Am I the same person I was yesterday?”

Animation is also a series of changing events. However slight, they are individual moments displayed together to create a unified picture. Each animation still can be viewed as a journal entry - a record of time revealed in oil paint or graphite. Each drawing or painted still has its effect on the whole. Some works illustrate an expressionless and indifferent face, while others show my body and face in extreme, often threatening expressions. The viewer is left to guess which, if any of these works reveal my true character and contemplate the notion of my ever-changing personality.

My animations combine traditional painting and drawing techniques with digital technology to create animated portraits which are displayed on small LCD panels or projected large-scale. Each video is comprised of multiple painted or drawn self-portraits that, although similar, possess slight variations of color and treatment. When animated, the paint and mark move across the surface, resulting in a portrait that is in constant flux.

BIO

Scott Hutchison is a painter living in the Washington DC metro area. His artwork combines contemporary realism and animation. An exploration of the human figure continues to be the leitmotiv of Hutchison’s work with a long-standing interest in self portraiture.He received his BFA in painting from Drake University in 1992 and subsequently undertook a year of independent painting and study in Bath, England. In 1995 Scott received the Morris Lewis Fellowship in painting which allowed him to pursue and graduate with an MFA degree from George Washington University in 1999.

Scott Hutchison has exhibited extensively throughout the Washington DC metropolitan area, including numerous solo exhibitions at a variety of academic institutions such as Gallaudet University, Georgetown University, George Mason University, and N.O.V.A. He currently teaches painting and drawing courses at Georgetown University and The Art League.
