The Lade Inn is a family owned and run traditional Scottish pub/restaurant, which provides its customers with quality fresh food prepared by head chef Stephen Park, formerly of Turnberry, the Ritz and Landmark Hotels. Winner of the Forth Valley Food Links best eating place in the Forth Valley award and one of the first pub/restaurants to achieve the VisitScotland’s - Best Bars in Scotland award, the Lade Inn is a business committed to local suppliers and to taking care of our environment, already we are a Green Tourism Silver Award Winner.

The food is complemented by the Lade Inn real ales - Waylade, Ladeback and Ladeout and by an excellent selection of wines. Family is key to the success of the business, over 60s and kids can enjoy smaller portions as normal portion sizes are hearty. The family dog is welcome in our superb garden, with its 3 ponds and a bird feeding station, or in the Bothy Bar on colder days, where the log fire creates a cosy atmosphere. We are supporters of the RSPB and feature on their Bird of Prey Trail.

The Scottish Real Ale Shop located in the old Trossachs Craft Brewery offers a selection of over 160 bottled Scottish Real Ales from the 35 micro breweries spread throughout Scotland. This is the largest selection of Scottish Real Ales under one roof in the country. The Scottish Real Ale Shop website is where online customers can order from home and have their favourite ales sent to them or to friends as presents.

The Lade Inn and Scottish Real Ale Shop offer visitors a truly Scottish experience with a commitment to good quality and value for money. On Friday and Saturday nights enjoy free live Scottish Folk music from some of the best bands in Scotland. Dine in the restaurant, then join the band in the Bothy Bar for a good old sing along from 8:30 to about midnight, the perfect end to a great night out.

Edinburgh Zoo 30 March 2012

On Friday the 30th of March we made our way over to Edinburgh to visit the Zoo. The weather was absolutely gorgeous and the kids were struggling to contain themselves at the thought of seeing all the animals. We have been to the zoo many times before however this was going to be the first time we would see the two Giant Pandas Tian Tian and Yang Guang.

We were not left disappointed on our trip. One of the benefits of a day out there is that you literally can spend the whole day there and still miss a few things. This is a real bonus considering it can be a little pricey visiting the zoo with a family but you really are getting your money’s worth. The conservation work they undertake across the world also makes it so worthwhile and allows us to learn about each species’ natural environment which in turn helps animals to thrive in the wild.

The highlights for us were the Budongo Trail and the Giant Pandas.

The Budongo Trail is where you learn about Chimpanzees and our link with them. I must say looking at some of them you could quite easily forget that they are only apes, their mannerisms are so close to ours. My son, who is only three, was convinced he was speaking with one.

The Giant Pandas were awesome. If you want to see the Pandas make sure you reserve online as due to their sensitive nature too many people shouldn’t crowd them at one time. The female Tian Tian was having a little afternoon nap while we were there so we didn't see much of her but Yang Guang the male, did not disappoint. He was having a ball playing in his outdoor enclosure. I left feeling really privileged to have seen these beautiful creatures knowing how endangered they are.

The one thing that I love the most about the zoo is that it is catered entirely towards families even down to the smallest detail. For example along the way there are little play parks dotted around so that children can give their little brains a rest and run around making as much noise as they want. They are also good for a breather and they have seating where you can enjoy a picnic or a cup of coffee. There are also great toilet facilities onsite with 2 family sized toilets near the entrance providing facilities for all ages which takes a lot of stress away from the adults caring for more than one child especially.

I would strongly recommend a visit to the zoo if you are looking for a great day out in Scotland’s capital.

Our tips:

Get there nice and early. You really can spend all day and still miss a few animals, so if you get there early you are more likely to get the most of your day.

Take a picnic. It helps keep the cost of your day out down and also allows for any extra pennies to be spent on the odd coffee or ice cream.

Reserve a slot to see the Pandas online. You will not be able to see them otherwise which could put a damper on your day.

Prepare for all weather. The zoo is outdoors and especially in the summer when you are least likely going to wear a jacket. It can get a little windy at the top and this can get a little chilly so even a light jacket or cardigan can solve that.

For more information about the zoo and all their attractions, please see their website.

Julie Reece was our Summer 2011 E-Magazine Competition Winner. She won a fabulous 5 night stay for her and her family in the Scottish Borders courtesy of Whitecairn and Glenluce Holiday Parks. Below is a little email that Julie sent us about her stay. We are glad she and a fantastic time and hope it gives others food for thought when they book their summer holidays this year!

"Thank you for our stay on the 23rd March 2012.

Both myself and my husband and especially my two children had a fantastic stay and we were extremely lucky with the beautiful weather that we had!

The park was an excellent base and we visited lots of the local attractions including Cream of Galloway, The Coco Bean Chocolate Factory (Islas’s favourite place), Kircudbright and even managed a paddle at Moss Yard beach. The kids loved the little play park and the beautiful scenery surrounding us, they were especially delighted about the baby calves directly across the road from our caravan window.

The caravan itself was definitely the best we have stayed it, it was impeccably clean, spacious, warm and very well equipped.

I will definitely recommend Whitecairn to my friends and family and also the area itself, we were surprised by how much there was to do and could easily have spent another busy few days. We will no doubt return; in fact my eldest daughter has already requested the same caravan next year."

Aurora Watch UK is reporting a red alert today. This means that the Aurora Boralis or Northern Lights can very likely be seen from anywhere in the UK. This is probably due to the recent solar storms which have apparently been the strongest in in 5 years.
Exploring Scotland - Economy Camping in Scotland

In these difficult economic times of austerity not everyone has the holiday budget that they may have had prior to the last recession, this has been highlighted by the increasing popularity of the “staycation“ which has helped towards double digit growth in the leisure tourism sector in Scotland. Almost one million extra visitors in 2011 compared to 2010.

With cost becoming an increasingly more important factor when planning a holiday or short break many people have turned to camping as a means of reducing the cost of their holiday.

There are primarily three types of camping on offer, the large and more expensive five star sites offering everything from dining and TV lounges to kids corners, the smaller and less expensive sites offering only the basic amenities and lastly, sparsely distributed across Scotland are sites usually to be found in superb scenic locations which often offer no amenities belonging to them and payment is by means of an honesty box (which often helps fund a community project so your contribution goes towards a good cause).

The most economical camping of all is Wild Camping, a subject which will be discussed briefly later.

As the focus here is on economy we shall refrain from describing what a five star site has to offer other than mention you will not be short of creature comforts. Instead relating the experience of a few small and honesty box style sites plus an insight in to wild camping.

There are many publications available detailing practically every site in Scotland, following are just a few to give you a flavour of what to expect.

On the north coast of Sutherland about thirty miles west of Thurso, exactly halfway between John O’ Groats and Cape Wrath is the Craigdhu Caravan Site at Bettyhill, this ideally situated site has been run by Mr. and Mrs. Mac Kenzie for more than forty years, a friendly welcome is given to one and all and if you are fortunate a few local tales to go with it, if travelling alone you can stay here for between five and ten pounds for a night. Bettyhill is well served by local amenities with both the recently refurbished Hotel and Inn offering reasonable fayre. It is the beaches and bays that are the outstanding feature here, a sunset over Farr Bay really takes some beating.

Sunset over Farr Bay, Bettyhill, Sutherland

As you meander around the breathtaking coastline after about sixty miles, stopping on numerous occasions at the many points of interest, Scourie is arrived at and here is another gem of a small site, there is a good selection of amenities here including the “ Anchorage “ bar & diner where you can enjoy an inexpensive meal and a pint and get to engage with the locals as many prefer to take their refreshment here as opposed to the local hotels. A pitch for one person and car is around ten pounds which is well worth it for the facilities provided and for the view across Scourie Bay.

Looking across Scourie Bay from the Campsite

Continuing down the northwest coast and enjoying the coastal and mountain vistas eventually Loch Ewe is reached, which as well as scenic is also steeped in naval history, as this was the entry point to the Atlantic Ocean for submarines and convoys during World War Two, passing through Poolewe, famous for its gardens and heading north again on the other side of the loch with eyes peeled as Firemore Sands is not to obvious until you see the camper vans and tents near the beach this is an honesty box site, regarded by some as free camping but is only fair to leave a contribution for your stay, there are no amenities on the site, the closest being in the nearby settlement of Cove but the pristine sandy beach and bay with views across the loch more than compensate for this, a super location which is often not that busy due to it being somewhat off the beaten track.

Continuing south and along the shores of Loch Maree enjoying the sights of the mountains of Slioch and Ben Eighe we find our-self encaptivated by the Torridon mountain range as we pass through the village of the same name en route to our next camping destination of Shieldaig in Wester Ross.

Mountains of Torridon

In Shieldaig there is another site with no amenites, it is actually a piece of common grazing ground set aside for the use of campers, it offers fantastic views across Loch Shieldaig which provides sunsets to remember for the rest of your life and perhaps just one or two midges, especially if it is moist.

Just below the elevated position of the campsite are public W.C’s providing hot and cold and drinking water, where you can have a wash and brush up before heading along the village, which fronts on to the loch, with it’s charming array of B & B’s before reaching the rather excellent Shieldaig Bar where a friendly welcome is extended to all. Wildlife abounds in this locale and sightings of dolphins in the loch and pine martens in the surrounding woods are not uncommon.

Shieldaig, Wester Ross

Heading further south and then west, in fact as far west as you can go on the British mainland we begin the journey along the Ardnamurchan Peninsula, the road might be narrow with frequent stops in passing places but the scenery is breathtaking. Our final destination is only a few miles from the most westerly point and its nearby imposing lighthouse which is fifty feet above the rocks but still catches the spray from the waves in its courtyard when there is a big westerly gale blowing. The site is at Ormsaigbeg close to Kilchoan and offers all the amenities you would expect to find on a small site, put together in a most intriguing fashion and terrific value at seven pounds a night for one person and car. Run by a really interesting chap called Trevor Potts who lectures on Antarctic cruise ships during the close season. he has converted an 18th century croft house in to a study centre which holds some exhibits and a small library, this in addition to the views across the sound to Mull and the variety of wildlife and geological features to be found make this a truly wonderful location and is highly recommended for a visit.

If you desire to really get away from it all then wild camping is the way to go, there are countless numbers of the most spectacular locations to be found, none of which will be mentioned here in the ethos of keeping it wild.

There is so much enjoyment to be had in just choosing your pitch for the night, the world really is your oyster but open it carefully and with consideration for others, for more information about your rights to access wild camping in Scotland visit Outdoor Access-Scotland.
Wild camping just off the road, northwest Scotland

Trust you have enjoyed this little insight in to exploring Scotland by economy camping.

Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery

On Sunday 22nd January we attended the Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery in Glasgow. I had attended the museum once before it was refurbished and was excited to see how it looked now after all the positive comments I had heard from friends and family. As per my previous blogs, I took the family with to make sense of how well the museum caters for children as well as adults, and I must say I wasn't disappointed.

There was an ACDC exhibit on but due to time constraints, we were unable to visit although we did see very many happy fans of the band leave the show afterwards so I would assume it was entertaining. If you happened to visit the exhibit, I would love to know how it went.

The facilities on site are fantastic and unlike a few other old buildings, there is proper provision for disabled people and parents with prams with a lift system in place and nice open corridors in which to move comfortably. There are also plenty of toilets which with me being heavily pregnant and going out with a newly toilet trained toddler, really took advantage of. It sounds really trivial, but those who have children at this stage will understand the planning ahead required when out and about.

The exhibits themselves were well presented and the animals were a real treat for the children, and not just mine. The area was packed with excited children reciting the names of the animals they recognised. There are also touch screens throughout the exhibits which help children get involved through games, songs and facts of what they are looking at. The only issue was trying to get them away from it. I am not a fan of taxidermy at the best of times and was personally a little freaked out there so if you are little sensitive I would suggest you prepare yourself. Other than that I had no problems.

The highlight for me and my partner was the exhibition of paintings by the famous Glasgow Boys. I was in awe of the talent that these men processed and it showed a real insight to life in Scotland in the late 19th and early 20th century. There are many other works of art on display through the rest of the museum from the Renaissance Style to Modern. No matter your style, there is something for you. The museum is free to visit and I love that everyone has access to these masterpieces.

As you would expect, there were lots of exhibits based on either Glasgow specific or Scottish History. I loved the mention of James Watt, without whom we may have never had the industrial revolution. He most famously improved the steam engine. I also mulled around the Robert Burns section for a while since it was close to Burn Night.

I would definitely recommend a visit to the Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery whether you are taking the family or going on your own. It will have something for you and the best part is that its free!

Just stumbled upon something very interesting. The UK's own Aurora watch. I went on the hunt for info on the visibility of the Northern Lights here in Scotland as I have to see them one day. I have also heard from the grapevine that apparently there has been some major activity from the sun over the last few weeks and that the Northern Lights were visible in Scotland. A quick search on 'ol google and Aurora Watch UK seems to be what everybody needs that wants to know where and when they might be able to see the Northern Lights here in the UK.

'The aurora borealis (or northern lights) is a spectacular natural phenomenon which can occasionally be seen in the night sky over Britain. Once seen, it is never forgotten. AuroraWatch UK allows you to monitor geomagnetic activity in real time, and will let you know when aurora may be visible from the UK.

We offer free alerts to notify you whenever aurora is likely to be seen from the UK. These alerts can be forwarded to your phone as a text message, so you will know when to look out for aurora wherever you are.'
You can also follow them on twitter HERE

	Or on Facebook HERE
There is also a Flickr Stream which you can view HERE
Search Scotland has grown substantially in the last year and as a result we have to change the system of how the site and tourist provider promotion is managed. We are now recruiting “Regional Reporters” to manage whats going on in different areas of Scotland and as a result making us more informative to tourists and accessible to tourism providers. This has resulted in us having to charge for all listings on the site however we are confident that the service provided will be improved and all adverts will work better for each individual.

If you are interested in applying to be one of SearchScotland.Org’s regional reporters, please CLICK HERE.

Please note it is still free to add events, photographs and articles about your area to the site although editorial style articles about your services will be chargeable. Contact us for more information.

We will be conducting a recorded interview with the Minister for Scottish Tourism on Monday 23rd January. If you have anything that you would like us to ask the Minister on your behalf, please send you questions to us. The deadline is Sunday 15th January, questions after this date will not be included. Please click here to submit your question.

Below are some of the questions we intend on asking:

	1. Where do you see Scottish tourism in the next 5 - 10 years?

2. What is being done right now by the SNP to promote tourism in Scotland?

3. Where would you rank tourism in Scotland as a contributor to income, especially foreign income to the Scottish economy?

4. Are there any grant schemes in the pipeline by the SNP?

5. It has been reported that many rural areas in Scotland are still not on broadband, so much of advertising and promotion needs to be done online, what are the plans to get the rurual areas online on fast broadband to make sure they are not left behind?

6. Will Scottish Enterprise be looking at Scottish Tourism as an area to invest?

7. What according to you are the main areas in Scottish tourism that can be improved?

8. What areas of Scottish tourism would you say stand out from the rest?

9. In the manifesto little is said about Scottish tourism itself. It does talk about The ten-point plan to take an "All Scotland" inclusive approach to tourism development, recognising that joined-up policies across many sectors which include transport, environment, food and drink, communications, culture and international relations. What has been achieved so far?

10. Where do you go on holiday?

11. What is your favourite place in Scotland to visit?

12. What is your favourite whisky?

AN OPEN WINDOW FOR THE DISCOVERY OF A COUNTRY

This article relates of my feelings when travelling in the country with a camera and discussing with the locals.

I have already visited 56 countries and 12 states in the USA. I currently live in the Highlands of Scotland. Scotland is made of land, lakes and mountains, and, in between, the Great Glen. The Great Glen relays the Atlantic to the North Sea. So, in one day we have different landscapes to photograph for our memories, and I am still curious to discover what is around my little village, Fort Augustus.

When it is not raining, when the sun is shining and when we have the time, John my husband takes me and our West Highland White Terrier, Jack, to discover new towns, cities, villages, and routes.

Travelling in our Shogun car, I can admire the landscape passing by with comfort and nice music.

We can stop when we want, everywhere we want with our 4x4 although it is not too ecological but there is no other way of being a tourist in the Highlands, driving on the wild nature on steep hills, muddy lanes and uncomfortable roads with holes and heaps.

There is always something new to see. There is always a corner that our eyes did not catch first. The landscape is the same, however, there is always new pictures to take because the light differs from hour to hour, from summer to winter, because you miss something, or simply because your mood is different.

During these short breaks we also stop at local pubs or restaurants where we can taste various dishes and have fantastic chats with the owners and customers. This is also another opportunity to know what is around and who are our neighbours or, an open window to broaden my knowledge and satisfy my curiosity.

What do I like most in taking pictures? It varies and it depends on the place I am. For example, in a garden it will be a specific tree or flower; in a pond it will be a flower or a reflection; in a town it will be people gathering or taken in a specific posture. Also, I will take pictures of a landscape to show the site or to remember where I have been for my personal album.

Pictures are the open windows for worldwide better knowledge of what is around you. The world is not so wide, and Scotland is beautiful!

The festival marks the anniversary of the famous failed Viking Invasion attempt on the town in 1263. A replica Viking Village has been built for the duration of the festival and you can experience the sights And smells of Viking life at the time. They even have an archery section at the back where you can practice your skills with a bow and arrow. We visited the village and have uploaded some of the images to the events section in our Gallery.

On Saturday there were a number displays, stalls and fairground attractions to make it an activity packed fun day out. Again our favourite Celtic band, Clann An Drumma performed which they will do again on Saturday the 3rd of September. If you haven't seen them yet I would strongly recommend adding them to your itinerary of the event. There was also a Viking Weapon and Battle display that always pulls in the crowds. The stalls available included a owl and raptor display as well as Snakes and other creepy crawlies, not for the faint hearted!

The highlight of the day however, had to be the Aerobatic Display by a Pitts S2A biplane over the Clyde. The crowds lined up in awe at the loop the loop and kid on dog fight he had in the sky with another bi plane. We again have some images in our Gallery.

The weather for Saturday was fantastic as well and allowed for the traditional ice cream on the Largs Promenade to finish the day off.

Please note the festival runs until Sunday the 4th of September. To view the full itinerary of events, please see the official website http://www.largsvikingfestival.com

A word of caution: Plan your trip ahead of time and be aware that car parking in Largs can be limited however the town boasts a train service to Glasgow and Bus services to Glasgow and Ayrshire.

If you were at the event we would love to hear from you or see your pics in the gallery!

Eglinton Park

Eglinton Park is a large country park in Ayrshire that is run by the local council and is free to visit. There is a lot on offer for example cycle / walking paths, play parks and a cafe (although there are plenty of picnic spots along the way). There is also a quaint visitor centre which provides more history on the estate and other useful information.

We went to the estate with a picnic in tow on a fantastic summers day allowing us to enjoy the state at the fullest. There are two play parks, one for younger children and a larger one that caters all ages. The larger park was fantastic with a variety of traditional playthings like slides and swings and more interactive play with large xylophones and wind chimes. Those who were more acquainted with the park had the right idea and had brought deck chairs and propped them up within the park itself.

We decided to take a stroll with an ice cream on one of the many paths. We could have walked for miles it was such a beautiful walk.

There was an art exhibition on the day we visited and it seems like, at least through the summer months, there are a few events / exhibitions on.

If you are in the Ayrshire area, I would definitely recommend a visit.

Over 57 ships from all over the world embarked on the town for a weekend of fun and entertainment. The event itself was free and the crowds were treated to performances from the likes of Lulu, Deacon Blue and other local performing arts groups. The event was nicely closed with a fabulous display by none other than the Red Arrows.

We attended the event on both the Saturday and the Tuesday for the air display. The weather was fantastic and this brought in the crowds, in fact over 750,000 visitors descended on Greenock for the event. The only issue with this was a shortage in toilets and an initial problem with crowd control, however this was mostly solved for the next day.

There was a lot to do for the kids. You could go onto the one of the boats, watch one of the many performances thought the day, go to the fair ground or just chill out in the sun soaking up the fantastic atmosphere. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves with many folk dressing up for the occasion. The foreign sailors also had many of visitors in awe with their smart uniforms.

As a local of Greenock, I was very proud of the residents of Inverclyde and event organisers for hosting such a good event. It put Inverclyde on the map and let’s hope that tourists flock to the area as we have so much more to offer with our great maritime and engineering history. You can read more about the town by clicking the Greenock tab below.

Catriona

On Saturday the 2nd of July we headed to the Blairdrummond Safari Park near Stirling. We went because of my daughter’s 5th birthday and we couldn't have picked a better day, the weather was glorious. The only problem with it being so lovely were the crowds, but after the initial kerfuffle at the entrance, we soon forgot all about it.

We made our way to the picnic and barbecue area, where a member of staff kindly started the fire for us. The park provide charcoal and the barbecues are offered on a first come first serve basis. You do not have to pay extra for this service either as it is included in the entrance fee. What was really good about the location was that we could get on with the cooking while the kids had a blast exploring the opposite park. We were lucky to pull them away for lunch.

After being fed and watered, we decided to explore the safari park. The meerkats and sea lions were a real hit. We also spent quite a long time feeding the horses, llamas and goats etc. This was the more interactive part of the park and one which adults and kids who are animal lovers, get the chance to get up close and personal with some of the parks “farm yard” residents. The day would not have been complete without an ice cream cone which were reasonably priced.

Towards the end of the day, the kids had a turn of the Astroglide (included in entrance fee) and we watched the Sea Lion Show. Lola the sea lion was very talented and I would suggest making a point of attending the show if you visit the park. On leaving, we took the safari drive which delighted the kids that were still awake although as per usual the lions were having a snooze in the Scottish sun :)

I would recommend visiting the park if you are staying in or visiting the Stirling area.

Our Tip:
When planning a visit to the Blairdrummond Safari Park it is advisable to check the weather forcast. Most of the park is outdoors and if the weather is not onside it could ruin the overall experience.

If you have any experiences of the Blairdrummond Safari Park we would love to see them in the comments section below. Any photographs will be welcomed in the gallery.

Catriona

Glasgow Riverside Museum

Last weekend we visited the newly opened Riverside Museum on the banks of the River Clyde. I was really impressed, the exhibitions are fantastic and are far more interactive than the previous Transport Museum. We took the children with and they had a great time using the touch screens to find out more about the vintage cars etc. The highlight for my son was the South African Steam Train. You can also venture onto the Tall Ship Glenlee (for a fee).

The best thing about the day however is the fact that entry to the museum is free and makes taking the children on an interesting day out much easier to do. For this reason we would recommend going as close to opening as possible as it gets very busy very quickly and if you have brought the car, finding a parking space will be an issue.

I would advise that instead of parking at the museum, park at the Braehead Shopping Centre and take a trip down the river with Clyde Clippers. They stop at the museum and will provide a great experience of a boat trip along the Clyde. It will also give you a chance to get a bit of lunch or have some retail therapy before heading home.

Please note that signage to the museum is quite poor and if you are unfamiliar with Glasgow, plan your route ahead of time.

If you have an experience of the museum, please comment below, we would love to see how it went and upload any images to the gallery.

Catriona

Helensburgh Highland Games - How it went!

On Saturday 4th of June we attended the Helensburgh and Lomond Highland Games. I would first like to say that the event was really well organised and everything that we witnessed seemed to go as clockwork. Other than the usual carnival type stalls, there were loads of great stalls either selling locally sourced food stuffs or showcasing and raising money for local community groups.

It was different to the other Highland Games we have attended with the local Radio Station - Your Radio, the BBC and URTV being on site. It seemed to assist with the events hype and the crowds kept streaming in even after we left. We were there to showcase Highland Games being a family event and we were not disappointed. Luckily there were a few lines at the children's entertainment to subdue my daughter.

For the children, there was a bouncy castle, slides, climbing wall and many other carnival type activities.

We had a great chat with The Loch Lomond and Trossachs Search and Rescue Team and met the dogs. They do really great work and help save lives. You can see their pictures in the Gallery.

Representatives from “The Robert The Bruce Heritage Centre” were also on site and were all dressed for the occasion, even the horse! We have a great image of the gang together.

I personally loved watching the dancing because it brings back memories of when I was kilted up rain or shine to dance at a gathering. My favourite Scottish band were there too - Clann An Drumma! However the highlight of the day was not the attractions but the “Boerewors Roll” we had from one of the Oupa Food stall, selling John Brash (Edinburgh Butcher) meats in rolls and burgers.

I would recommend visiting the games next year!

Stirling Castle a Palace fit for a Queen

On Saturday the 4th and Sunday the 5th of June, Stirling Castle held the event “Palace Fit for Queen” which we attended. The event was in aid of the Grand Opening of Stirling Castle’s Renaissance royal palace and it was truly stunning. The castle went all out with more than 60 costumed performers who put on a range of displays and entertainments covering everything from cannon firing and fighting with a rapier to 16th-century dance, music, cooking, fashions, makeup and midwifery.

There were so many “performances” that we couldn't see them all. However we did see “An Audience with the Queen” which was held in the Great Hall. This was really entertaining as it showed the bickering which consumed the Scottish nobles at the time and gave an insight into the mind of Mary of Guise, the mother of Mary Queen of Scots. The actors included the audience and brought the history to life. The costumes were also spectacular.

Afterwards we took a tour of the castle and saw the new exhibits, kids will love it and many of the displays are geared towards children. It made learning really fun. Whilst walking around we saw many of the actors either playing old instruments or having a duel. A real highlight for my children was seeing 2 Scottish Deer Hounds which were massive but sweet natured and loved a wee cuddle.

We then headed outside and watched the young Mary Queen of Scots, played by 5 year old Catriona Glennie, playing croquet and other 16th century games on the lawn. The games were open to all and my children had lots of fun giving each a shot.

Finally we watched the Wappinshaw, a display of 16th century arms and armour. The men were really entertaining and finished the day with a mini battle in which chosen children bet on a “winner”.

I would strongly recommend a visit to the castle, the palace is beautiful and the other exhibits will make your visit really special for the children.
