SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (Feb. 2, 2012) - Every March, Scottsdale becomes a baseball mecca, beckoning fans from across the nation to bask in sunlight while watching their favorite professional teams face off at stadiums throughout Scottsdale and the Valley of the Sun. Proof of the longstanding tradition speckles the walls of downtown Scottsdale's oldest restaurants, dating back to the Cactus League's beginnings in 1947 when baseball greats such as Ty Cobb, Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle and Joe DiMaggio came to Greater Phoenix to strut their stuff in front of crowds of baseball fans and sun-bathers. Nine years later, the original Scottsdale Stadium was constructed, forever embedding spring training into the city's annual event calendar.
Today, Scottsdale pays homage to the Cactus League's 15 teams, including the six-time world champion San Francisco Giants who take the field at Scottsdale Stadium, and the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies, who call Salt River Fields at Talking Stick their spring training home. And while ballpark hotdogs and homeruns are certainly a staple of the games, Scottsdale is introducing a few new events, promotions and hotel packages to add some zest to America's favorite pastime.

NEW TWISTS ON OLD FAVORITES

Events
Kicking off the 2012 Cactus League season is the Feb. 25-26 Spring Training Festival, brought to you by the Scottsdale Charros. The free event at Scottsdale Civic Center Park and the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts includes never-before-seen items from the Buckhorn Baths' resort collection, including candid home movies of the Giants from the 1940s and ‘50s, and the Mad Science of Baseball, a symposium of many of the nation's top sports researchers discussing longstanding baseball trends. Join in on the festivities with quirky interactive activities, real-time scientific experiments, ballpark chow and live music. With many of the Cactus League teams represented at the festival, visitors can purchase spring training tickets, merchandise and even take home an autograph from a former player.

Promotions
Leading up to the Giants' and Diamondbacks' highly anticipated opener on March 3, the Scottsdale Convention & Visitors Bureau is launching "30 Days of Giveaways" Feb. 1 through March 1. Visit http://www.springtraininginscottsdale.com/ to win prizes such as a two-night stay at one of destination's world-class resorts or dinner for two at a Scottsdale original. Enter once a day to win a spring training vacation that can only be described as a "homerun."

Venues
Get a behind-the-scenes look at Scottsdale's newest stadium, Salt River Fields at Talking Stick, which debuted as the spring training home of the Arizona Diamondback and Colorado Rockies in March 2011. Check out the first and only Major League Baseball spring training facility built on Native American land during a one-hour tour Tuesdays at 2 and 3:30 p.m., and Saturdays at 10 a.m. Peruse the main stadium, press box, control room, party decks, and the common areas of both the Diamondbacks and Rockies for only $5. Plus, when you purchase a tour ticket, receive complimentary admission to an upcoming Salt River Field event.
Catch a Giants' game from the best seat in the house when you purchase a ticket to the Charro Lodge at Scottsdale Stadium. The private facility within the stadium serves as an unofficial VIP area with patio-style seating, all-inclusive food and drinks, and unmatched views, starting from just $85 per person.

Legacy Trail
Enjoy the history, traditions and cultural of spring training with a stroll down the Cactus League Legacy Trail, a series of exhibits and landmarks in Scottsdale, Mesa, Tempe and Goodyear that string together spring training's past and present. Participants include the Play Ball Experience exhibits, one of which is housed at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, and Scottsdale greats such as Don & Charlie's, where sports memorabilia and good food converge. Continue to reminisce about Scottsdale's longstanding baseball affections while indulging in The Best Damn Pan-Seared "No Filler" Crabcake Ever and Prime Rib at Pink Pony Steakhouse in downtown Scottsdale. This Scottsdale classic initially opened its doors to the public in 1949 and has featured a wide variety of baseball memorabilia on its walls since. In 2011, it underwent an ownership change and a menu overhaul, putting a modern spin on the old classic. Continue your historic tour of Scottsdale with Arizona Food Tours Presents a Taste of Old Town Scottsdale. In just three hours, experience six of Scottsdale's most distinct restaurants, such as The Mission, Rusty Spur Saloon and 5thand Wine, and be well-versed on the city's history.

HOTEL AND RESORTS
While state-of-the-art sports venues and one-a-kind promotions and events help draw spring training fans to Scottsdale each year, there's more than one reason the crowds are unwavering. With more than 70 world-class hotels and resorts in the greater Scottsdale area, the destination serves as a home base for fans of the Oakland A's in Phoenix, Chicago Cubs in Mesa and Anaheim Angels in Tempe.
SAVOR THE FLAVORS OF MEXICO
This winter, Scottsdale is turning the heat up with the addition of two Mexican culinary concepts headed by chefs whose reputations precede them. Usher in Iron Chef Jose Garces, whose downtown Scottsdale restaurant, Distrito, opened at The Saguaro in December 2011. The expansive menu of small plates draws on the bold flavors of Mexico City, paying special attention to Mexican Barbacoa, or barbecue. Bite into mouthwatering slow roasted meats such as Suadero en Adobo, black angus beef brisket, dry adobo rub; Costillas, Berkshire pork spare ribs, chipotle-cider mustard bbq; and Pollo a la Brasa, Yucatan-style rotisserie chicken, orange-guajillo glaze. Sip on more than 100 varieties of tequila from The Margarita Bar while watching staff prepare house-made tortillas and guacamole at Distrito's made-to-order station. This spring, sit at the outdoor "patio kitchen" to savor the smell of the custom smoke pit and grill, where chefs will prepare pork, brisket, lamb chops and chicken in front of guests. For media information, contact Jan Bracamonte at 480-540-3842 or jan@seredipitconsulting.com.
TAP INTO YOUR INNER VAN GOGH WITH ME THE ARTIST
Make a Me'sterpiece at Scottsdale's newest interactive art studio, Me the Artist, where true to its namesake, you're behind the brush. During a two-to-three hour session, your instructor walks you through how to create a 16"x20" acrylic-on-canvas replica of a painting, allowing you to take home a painting that people will think you've purchased at an art studio. Get your creative juices flowing with a glass of wine or a beer that you bring to the art studio. Let your artistic inhibitions go by adding your own flair with colors, shapes and designs that make the painting uniquely yours. With different guided paintings offered every day, you can opt to take home a saguaro depiction or a martini glass rendering. In-studio sessions start from $40, and special packages are available to groups who partake in guided paintings outside the studio, starting from $50. For media information, contact Ruby Farias at 602-295-5244 or rubyfarias@metheartist.com.
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (Jan. 17, 2012) - With unrelenting winds and plummeting temperatures sweeping through the Northeast and Midwest, it's no surprise that much of the country is dreaming of warmer weather. Make your far-reaching fantasy a reality during the Scottsdale Convention & Visitor Bureau's "Take Pity on Me" promotion, with two grand-prize winners taking home vacations to sunny Scottsdale, Ariz.

To enter, log into the Facebook promotion page at TakePityonMe.com from now until Feb. 15, and submit your best photo of your cold weather sufferings. The bureau will shuffle through photo submissions of tongues stuck to light posts and bundled up families sitting on frigid park benches, select the top 10 and re-post them on the website for fans to vote on Feb. 16-29.

The person who submits the best image will be sent packing for a three-night stay at The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa that includes roundtrip airfare to beautiful Scottsdale, where the average annual temperature is 70 degrees. From a breathtaking hot air balloon ride to a pampering Swedish massage, you'll experience all the destination has to offer, including golf, arts and culture and culinary delights.

The bureau also will select one voter at random as the lucky recipient of a vacation package that includes a three-night stay at the Montelucia Resort & Spa. That winner will experience the spectacular beauty of the Sonoran Desert during a guided hike or mountain climbing experience and a six-course meal at one of Scottsdale's trendiest restaurants.

"This is a great opportunity for our friends in cold weather climates to thaw out in Scottsdale's warm and inviting winter weather," said Caroline Stoeckel, director of marketing for the bureau. "With more than 330 days of sunshine each year, Scottsdale is a premiere destination for golf, spas, shopping, outdoor adventures, arts and culture exploration, and nightlife."

Imagine a desert oasis where you can pamper your body at a luxurious resort spa, engage your mind at a world-renowned museum of Native American art, and take in some of the world's finest golf. A place where shopping is an art form and activities abound in the lush Sonoran Desert. Well, Scottsdale is that place. Take a moment to check out the exciting programs and changes taking place around the city.

OUT & ABOUT IN SCOTTSDALE

SCOTTSDALE AND STATE CELEBRATE MILESTONES AND LEGACIES
Dust off your birthday hats and noisemakers because Scottsdale has several landmark anniversaries to celebrate in 2012, including the 75th birthday of Frank Lloyd Wright's beloved winter abode, Taliesin West (http://www.franklloydwright.org/). Get an intimate look at the world renowned architect's life when visiting Frank Lloyd Wright: Organic Architecture for the 21st Century, an exhibition at the Phoenix Art Museum (http://www.phxart.org/). The one-of-a-kind exhibition runs through April 30, and features 33 never-before-shown drawings by "America's greatest architect," as well as rare home movies. Complementary programming ranging from symposiums and concerts to special events and enhanced tours are taking place at Taliesin West, a National Historical Landmark, throughout the year. Partake in the property's Education Outreach Program, which includes hands on courses for children on design, ceramics and sculpture. Try the decadent dishes that were served at Wright's beloved winter abode when you purchase the new "A Taste of Taliesin West" cookbook that includes 75 original recipes. Visit the Scottsdale Convention & Visitors Bureau's commemorative Wright website (http://www.architectureinscottsdale.com/) for more information on the life and work of the renowned architect whose passion for the Sonoran Desert influenced his architectural feats.
Also in 2012, celebrate the anniversary of one of the destination's most picturesque properties, the JW Marriott Camelback Inn Resort & Spa, which turns 75 (http://camelback75.com/). Camelback Inn is one of the most beloved resorts in the Marriott profile, with a rich history and unique Southwestern style that has made it a favorite for generations of travelers. As part of its "diamond" anniversary celebration, the Inn has unveiled the "Memory Collection" photo contest, where past resort guests are invited to submit their most fun-filled photos from previous stays. A total of 75 overnight stays will be given away with one grand prize of a seven-night getaway at Camelback Inn. The resort also is offering spa specials at The Spa at Camelback Inn, a new prix-fixe menu at BLT Steak and an anniversary-themed room package.
As if that wasn't enough reason to celebrate, Arizona celebrates its 100th birthday on Feb. 14 (http://www.arizona100.org/) and each of Arizona's Territorial Capitols are taking notice. During a series of festivals known as Arizona Best Fest, the territorial capitols will present the state's diverse and vibrant culture, honor the past, and celebrate the future. The city of Phoenix will take its turn Feb. 10-12 and feature wineries, micro breweries, locally renowned restaurants, top chefs, regional art and merchandise crafted in Arizona as part of the state's support of the "Local First" movement. Other festivities include galas, motorcycle tours, outdoor festivals, culinary celebrations and down-home rodeos that lead into the centennial.

BEACH CLUB TO MAKE A SPLASH IN DOWNTOWN'S NIGHTLIFE DISTRICT
Described as a "desert version of Miami's South Beach" by The New York Times, downtown Scottsdale is the place for chef-driven restaurants, fine art galleries, unparalleled shopping and of course, sizzling nightlife. Downtown will get even hotter this summer when the nightlife and entertainment district welcomes Scottsdale Beach Club, the first high-end beach club bringing together entertainment, music, and food for day and nighttime fun. Beach-club goers will enjoy a resort-style pool with daybeds and lounges, private and VIP cabanas with private plunge pools, a restaurant, a poolside taco bar, Arizona's largest LED video screen, and a clubhouse area with video games, billiards, shuffleboard, and flat screen TVs. A floating stage overlooking the pool will play host to deejays and live music. And the best part is that the beach club will be open to the public - no membership and no hotel affiliation. Scottsdale Beach Club is being developed by Triyar Entertainment, developers of the W Scottsdale (www.whotels.com/scottsdale), which opened in downtown Scottsdale in September 2008.

SCOTTSDALE CELEBRATES 10 YEARS OF NATIVE TRAILS
Native Trails, presented by the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation and produced by the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, (http://www.scottsdalenativetrails.com/) is celebrating its 10th anniversary with an extended season of 19 performances. The free festivals take place most Thursdays and Saturdays from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. outdoors at the downtown Scottsdale Civic Center Park through April 14. Native Trails explores Native American history through the art of song and dance, bringing together traditional instruments, colorful dances, and customary attire. Elements new to the 2012 season include Native American artisans selling specialty items like flutes and large-scale paintings, and also a renewed focus on food. Vendors sell indigenous items and culinary delights that can be enjoyed during a picnic in the grass while watching the performances. Native Trails' grand finale coincides with the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts' OrigiNation: A Festival of Native Cultures, an event celebrating the indigenous cultures of Australia and New Zealand through music and art. Native Trails performers also will be on-hand to share Arizona's traditions.

PAOLO SOLERI-DESIGNED BRIDGE BRINGS ART TO SCOTTSDALE'S WATERFRONT
Since its dedication in December 2010, the renowned Soleri Bridge and Plaza have served as a landmark of downtown's Scottsdale Waterfront. Its 64-foot-long steel clad pylons jut into the air and cast shadows on both the bridge and Arizona Canal, an ancient Indian Hohokam canal, tracking solar events such as the winter solstice and solar noon. Now, through the launch of its own website, http://www.soleribridge.com/, the waterfront fixture has gained visibility on an even larger scale. Website visitors can listen to recordings about the bridge's construction and its renowned Italian designer, Paolo Soleri, who has designed more than 60 bridges over the past 60 years, but built only one; view photos of the 22,000-square-foot plaza, which features the largest worldwide assemblage of Soleri's world-famous wind bells; and arrange a Scottsdale visit that falls on an equinox or solstice. Brought to life by the City of Scottsdale and Scottsdale Public Art, the website serves as a one-stop-shop for all things Soleri Bridge and Plaza.

FIRST GLOBAL MUSEUM OF MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS THRIVES IN DESERT
Take a melodic journey through the world at the Musical Instrument Museum (http://www.themim.org/, MIM), the first global museum of instruments. Having opened only two years ago, it's left its mark on Scottsdale with a world class display of 2,500 instruments and artifacts from more than 200 countries and more than 15,000 in its collection. Transport to another land with wireless headsets and LCD video displays depicting the sounds and sights of the instruments and the people who use them. See the recreation of a gong workshop, listen to the sounds of the traditional Beijing Opera or experience a contemporary Ukrainian wedding procession. Stop by MIM's Artist Gallery, which houses instruments from famous musicians throughout time including John Lennon, Paul Simon, the Black Eyed Peas and the Jonas Brothers. After enjoying a worldly concert, try out your own musical abilities in MIM's Experience Gallery, where you can play instruments such as guitars, gongs and drums.
From Feb. 18 - Jan. 6, 2013, celebrate Arizona's music history through the MIM's special exhibition, "I Am AZ Music: MIM Celebrates 100 Years of Arizona Music," which includes more than 30 memorable exhibits. From cowboy tunes to mariachi music, the exhibition features all things synonymous with "Arizona music," including a unique video project in which local musicians, instrument makers and community members discuss the role that music has played in their lives.

SCOTTSDALE'S DOWNTOWN CONTINUES TO EVOLVE
Downtown Scottsdale is a bustling epicenter of activity rich with history and filled with the spirit of both the contemporary and Old West. Blending classic luxury with new urban sizzle, retail, dining and entertainment meld with an impressive collection of unique shops, restaurants, galleries and nightclubs in this vibrant pedestrian-friendly area. Highlights of downtown's renaissance include the Scottsdale Waterfront (http://www.scottsdalewaterfront.com/) and SouthBridge (http://www.southbridgescottsdale.com/) along an ancient Indian canal system. The Scottsdale Waterfront is a 1.1 million-square-foot residential and retail development featuring a mix of national and local retailers and restaurants, public event space, public art and recreation paths as well as two bridges across the Arizona Canal that link the Waterfront and Scottsdale Fashion Square mall to Scottsdale's Fifth Avenue shopping district and SouthBridge. SouthBridge is an urban development along the south bank of the canal and the city's newest district. The borough brings together elite, high-fashion boutiques, independent shops, celebrated cuisine and art. Notably absent are any national chain stores, upholding the independent spirit of the district. Look for restaurants such as the herb box and Barrio Queen Tequileria, along with boutiques like The Mix and J. Gilbert Footwear - each unique in design and concept.

With its stylish resorts, world-class shopping and dynamic nightlife, Scottsdale has become a haven for celebrities and the destination of choice for celebs like Britney Spears, Jamie Foxx, Halle Berry, Jeremy Piven and more. Everyone's favorite hip-hop power couple, Beyoncé and Jay-Z, ditched the beaches of Saint-Tropez to celebrate their honeymoon at Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain (http://www.sanctuaryaz.com/). Stylish Hollywood elite like Jennifer Aniston, Sarah Jessica Parker, Angelina Jolie and Tim Gunn have prowled the fashionable corridors of the Southwest's largest shopping mall, Scottsdale Fashion Square (http://www.fashionsquare.com/). Scottsdale may seem like the latest in a craze, but its popularity with celebrities dates back to the 1950s when classic Hollywood stars like Zsa Zsa Gabor and Carey Grant graced the corridors of Hotel Valley Ho (http://www.hotelvalleyho.com/). The Saguaro is owned by The Sydell Group Ltd., whose other properties include The Ace Hotel New York and The Ace Hotel & Swim Club in Palm Springs.
CULINARY SCENE

GOURMET ON THE GO
Let's face it, grabbing lunch, dinner or even a snack in the airport isn't always easy, affordable or even appetizing, but Sky Harbor International Airport (http://www.phxskyharbor.com/) is breaking the mold. Nearly 5 million travelers move through the airport's busiest terminal annually and thanks to a massive project set to launch in spring 2012, they will have gourmet options from top local restaurants. Scottsdale eateries that will make you hope your flight is delayed or even canceled at Terminal 4 include a slew of Sam Fox's concepts like Sauce, Blanco Tacos & Tequila and Olive & Ivy (http://www.foxrc.com/); long-time local favorite, Cowboy Ciao (http://www.cowboyciao.com/); and Barrio Café (http://www.barriocafe.com/).

ANOTHER JAMES BEARD CHEF JOINS SCOTTSDALE'S DINING SCENE
Chef Jose Garces, named the "Best Chef Mid-Atlantic 2009" by the James Beard Foundation, made his Scottsdale debut in December with Distrito (http://distritorestaurant.com/), the signature restaurant at downtown Scottsdale's newest hotel, The Saguaro (http://www.thesaguaro.com/). He serves as the restaurant's consulting chef, working to showcase the diverse street food of Mexico City, known for its barbacoa (Mexican barbecue). Tempt your taste buds with a selection of slow roasted meats cooked in an outdoor smoke pit and savory dishes like Suadero en Adobo, black angus beef brisket with dry adobo rub; costillas, berkshire pork spare ribs in chipotle-cider mustard BBQ sauce; and a menu of small plates featuring items like Mahi Mahi tacos in chipotle remoulade and Yellowfin tuna ceviche. Choose from more than 100 varieties of tequila from the Margarita Bar to find your perfect drink to complement the cuisine. And look for kitschy tributes to Mexico's luchas libres wrestlers, a wall constructed of decorative skulls commonly associated with the Mexican Day of the Dead celebration, and a "Piñata Stage" that is used for live entertainment and B.Y.O.P (bring your own piñata) parties.

Continue the Arizona wine experience with Pavle Milic, part-owner of FnB Restaurant (http://www.fnbrestaurant.com/), a trendy gastropub in the heart of downtown Scottsdale, just one of many Scottsdale restaurants serving Arizona wines. In mid-January, Milic debuted a three-in-one culinary destination that features a small retail wine store, café and boutique market. AZ Wine Merchants sells Milic's favorite varietals with grapes grown and bottled in the Grand Canyon state, many of which can be found on the current FnB menu. The quaint and cozy, 28-seat Baratin is limited to a daily changing pâté, sandwich, cheese plate, salad selection and a global wine list limited to one rosé, two reds and two whites. At Bodega, customers can purchase much of the same locally sourced ingredients used at all of Milic's spots. Featured items include produce from nearby Maya's Farm and McClendon's Select, MJ Bread, Sweet Republic ice cream, Rainbow Valley Heritage butter, and more.

DOWNTOWN DINING: NEW HOT SPOT FROM LONGTIME FAVORITE
If you're in the mood for "Euro-Mexican" check out SouthBridge's newest tenant - Barrio Queen Tequileria (http://www.barrioculinaryconcepts.com/) - which opened in December 2011.
TAVERNS AND COCKTAILS, OH MY!
After years of success at Cowboy Ciao, including the creation of the infamous Stetson Chopped salad, Chef Bernie Kantak's latest culinary endeavor includes transforming Scottsdale's original Trader Vic's into Citizen Public House (http://www.citizenpublichouse.com/). Inspired by the casual atmosphere of a traditional pub with the focus on quality food, Kantak's coins his Citizen Public House as an upscale tavern. Serving craft beers and classic and contemporary cocktails with pub grub to match, this new restaurant boasts starters like gorgonzola-emmental mac-n-cheese and sandwiches like the AZ BLT with local bacon, tender greens and Campari tomato on caramelized French bread. The restaurant opened early in 2011, while a new addition, R+D, opened upstairs in December 2011. Modeled after a speakeasy, R+D is a mecca for original cocktails crafted by renowned mixologist Rich Moe. Instead of standard bar offerings, Moe constructs drinks such as a gin and tonic made in a double boiler from 100-proof vodka distilled over dried juniper berries, lemon rinds, cardamom and other spices.
Also new to downtown's cocktail scene is The Casablanca Lounge (http://thecasablancalounge.com/), which opened in October 2011. More than 360 types of spirits, the largest variety behind any bar in Scottsdale, serve as the beverage palette to bartending duo Rich Heider (formerly of Scottsdale's J&G Steakhouse and BLT Steak) and Tyson Buhler (formerly of Scottsdale's Jade Bar and Mabel's on Main) who concoct drinks with no creative restrictions. Cocktail aging barrels, hand-chiseled ice, homemade cordials, grenadines, infusions and the appropriate glass for virtually every drink are a few of the elements that ensure the lounge experience is truly all about the drink.

Cost is $42 per person.
Set on the western slope of the breathtaking McDowell Mountains and adjacent to the renowned Westworld of Scottsdale, the new 18-hole, par 71 course boasts more than 7,000 yards. Course architectural changes were overseen by the original course architect, Randy Heckenkemper, and included the widening on many play corridors, waste bunker additions, reshaping several of the fairways and adding more teeing areas. PGA Tour great and former Arizona State University Sun Devil, Phil Mickelson, now the owner of the course, commemorated the opening by striking the first tee shot and taking part in the ribbon cutting ceremony. He said the course's new design is intended for golfers of all skill levels, presenting demanding shots for the more experienced players, but also giving novices more shot options.

ADDING BANG FOR YOUR BUCK IN SCOTTSDALE
Scottsdale is known as one of the world's finest golf destinations. Few, if any, golf destinations can match the city's combination of ideal weather, top-tier resorts, championship golf courses and 19th hole attractions. However, among the lesser-known amenities in Scottsdale are the numerous avenues available to help golf travelers stretch their dollars during their visit. Here are a few tips from the Scottsdale Convention & Visitors Bureau to help travelers get the most bang for their buck:

Check online deals - Many courses offer a best-rate guarantee ensuring the best available price to those who book direct.

36-hole rates - Several golf clubs with more than one course offer substantial savings to guests who book play on both courses. These rounds often do not have to be played in the same day to get this rate. Among those clubs who offer such savings are Grayhawk Golf Club (http://grayhawkgolf.com/), TPC Scottsdale (www.tpc.com/tpc-scottsdale) and We-Ko-Pa Golf Club (http://wekopa.com/).

E-mail, Text Specials - A relatively new trend, select Scottsdale golf courses routinely send out special offers to those who join their e-mail and text message lists or who follow them on social media. These offers are typically last-minute, but can represent substantial savings.

Off-Peak Play - The most reliable option for gaining value is to visit during off-peak times of the year. Shoulder season (fall and late spring) and summer are prime times for budget-minded visitors.

SCOTTSDALE AND SEDONA - THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS
Scottsdale and Sedona, Ariz. are two of Arizona's most beautiful destinations yet each maintains its own unique personality. Within a two-hour drive, travelers can experience statuesque saguaros and towering red rocks, luxury resorts and Southwestern bed and breakfast inns, Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin West and Tlaquepaque art galleries, desert-inspired spa treatments and vortex meditation, and much more. The Scottsdale Convention & Visitors Bureau and Sedona Chamber of Commerce Tourism Bureau have an alliance that cross promotes the two travel destinations to better serve travelers, increase visitation between the two cities, lengthen visitor stays by educating customers as to the day-trip and overnight opportunities available, and enhance customers' overall experiences by incorporating the other destination so that their collective customers are more likely to return to Arizona and their communities. Scottsdale and Sedona are two of Arizona's most highly visited destinations by affluent visitors. Both cities possess a cachet that attracts high-value customers. In addition, research shows that Scottsdale visitors enjoy day trips to Sedona and vice versa. For more information, visit http://www.scottsdale-sedona.com/.

WEBSITE HIGHLIGHTS CITY'S BUILDING BLOCKS
Seventy-five years after Frank Lloyd Wright built Taliesin West against the backdrop of Scottsdale's McDowell Mountains, the architect and his beloved winter abode live on in infamy. To commemorate Wright's achievements in the Sonoran Desert and all of Scottsdale's innovative architects, the Scottsdale Convention & Visitors Bureau launched http://www.architectureinscottsdale.com/, where visitors can print out a guide for a self-tour of 30 distinct buildings in the Valley, including Hotel Valley Ho (http://www.hotelvalleyho.com/) and the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (http://www.smoca.org/); and discover downtown Scottsdale's 10 most-celebrated public art works while perusing Old Town's streets. The website's content spans generations and architectural styles, ranging from the little known Cattle Track in North Scottsdale, which was constructed in the 1930s as residential properties and art studios, to the 2010 construction of The Gateway to the McDowell Sonoran Preserve (http://mcdowellsonoran.org/), a building that serves as the entryway into the more than 20,000 acre expanse.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (Dec. 1, 2011) - Scottsdale remains one of the top destinations for meeting planners to host large-scale events, according to the Metropoll XIV Report.

In the report's 14th reading, meeting planners ranked Scottsdale No. 16 as a convention site among 40 meetings destinations in North America. Scottsdale outperformed major cities such as Philadelphia, Houston, Charlotte, Seattle and Toronto, the study indicated.

In several survey categories, Scottsdale achieved a top-10 ranking for its scenic setting (6th), outdoor recreational opportunities (6th), good climate (7th), low crime rate (9th) and cleanliness (10th). In addition, Scottsdale ranked third overall for having been called on by a bureau representative. Planners ranked Scottsdale in the bottom half for airline service (25th) and food and lodging costs (30th).

"We are pleased with the results of the Metropoll XIV Report," said Brent DeRaad, executive vice president at the Scottsdale Convention & Visitors Bureau. "Over the past few decades, we've seen an uptick in annual meeting and convention business that's attributable to outreach efforts by the bureau and its member hotels and resorts, along with the destination's world-class facilities."

Metropoll also conducted an add-on study that compared Scottsdale to Phoenix, Las Vegas, San Diego and Orlando, four of the destination's top warm-weather competitors. On average, meeting planners said they had more exposure to the Scottsdale bureau than the other destinations' comparative agencies. Nearly 60 percent of the meeting planners surveyed said they received direct mail from the Scottsdale visitors bureau in the past year, 18 percent higher than the five-city average. Half of all meeting planners surveyed said they had received a phone call from the bureau's staff within the past year, 21 percent higher than the five-city average. Fifty percent of planners also said they had visited the bureau's website within the last year, 20 percent higher than Scottsdale's direct competitors.

"We have made significant strides to keep Scottsdale top-of-mind among meeting planners," DeRaad said. "In the coming year, we will continue to implement myriad strategies, including hosting meeting planners in the destination for niche tours and increasing our involvement with third-party planners."

The Scottsdale bureau brings a diverse book of business to Scottsdale resorts and hotels. These groups include about 50 percent first-time clientele. In 2012, the bureau will continue to strengthen its customer base by implementing a fly-in program for select planners interested in hosting meetings in the destination. The bureau also will engage in so-called "road shows," which consist of individualized sales calls in neighboring top markets.

About the study: The Metropoll XIV Report was compiled from data provided by 780 meeting planners through an eight-page questionnaire. Metropoll XIV is a paid-for publication of RRC Associates and STR. A total of 231 meeting planners responded to the add-on survey.

                                                                                                          ###
THE SAGUARO PLANTS ITS ROOTS IN SCOTTSDALE
The Saguaro, Joie de Vivre Hotels' first property outside of California, opened its doors to the public on Nov. 3, 2011 after undergoing a $10 million renovation that showcases the colorful, vibrant spirit of the Southwest. The new hotel promises to leave its mark on downtown Scottsdale with the debut of three new dining destinations, 10,000 square feet of meeting space, two heated outdoor swimming pools and cabanas, and a full-service spa. Consulting chef Jose Garces, named the "Best Chef Mid-Atlantic 2009" by the James Beard Foundation, is the innovator behind the hotel's foodie havens. Distrito, The Saguaro's signature restaurant, is slated to open in December. Garces worked with Chef de Cuisine Dave Conn to create a menu that showcases the diverse street food of Mexico City, known for its Barbacoa (Mexican barbeque). Garces also is the brainchild behind the hotel's Old Town Whiskey, a bar evocative of frontier drink parlors, and Garces Trading Company (GTC) Coffee To-Go.
In addition to its new restaurants, The Saguaro boasts an original look that's a complete departure from its predecessor, the Hotel Theodore. The 194-room hotel pairs bold colors with simple design elements, signature of architects Peter Stamberg and Paul Aferiat of Stamberg Aferiat Architecture, the masterminds behind the renovation. The pink, green, orange and yellow hues that make up the hotel's color palette are reminiscent of indigenous wildflowers and tell the story of Scottsdale's breathtaking desert landscapes.
The Saguaro's grand opening falls one month after San Francisco-based Joie de Vivre Hospitality and New York City-based Thompson Hotels announced the finalization of their merger. Joie de Vivre was hand picked by The Saguaro's owner, Sydell Group, to manage the hotel earlier this year. Sydell Group also owns Ace Hotel & Swim Club in Palm Springs, Ace Hotel New York and the NoMad Hotel in New York, which is currently under construction. For media information, contact Lori Lincoln at llincoln@jdvhotels.com or 415-773-1067.

PHOENICIAN RENOVATIONS ADD BOLD FLAVOR TO PROPERTY
The Phoenician has recently undergone more than $4 million worth of renovations to its 25 suites, capping off an $80 million multi-faceted capitalization project that began more than three years ago. Major improvements included the addition of a state-of-the-art ballroom, the debut of Relish Bistro, a complete refurbishment of the property's guestrooms and common spaces and the revitalization of the Centre for Well-Being. Now, the technology and décor within the suites, which includes two presidential suites, has also been upgraded. Textured wall coverings double as artwork and accentuate the rooms' new color palette of navy blue and citron yellow. Each room is brimming with the latest technology, including television mirrors in the bathrooms, DVD sound systems, iPod docking stations, wired and wireless Internet, and LCD flat-panel, high-definition televisions. For media information, contact Denise Seomin at denise.seomin@luxurycollection.com or 480-423-2657.

BUCKLE UP: CAR AUCTION SEASON IS FAST APPROACHING
Each year, car enthusiasts flock to Scottsdale to experience the destination's venerable lineup of car shows. On Nov. 18, the Goodguys 14th Annual Southwest Nationals at WestWorld of Scottsdale will kick off the auction high season with more than 2,000 hot rods, custom, classic and muscle cars. Thousands of visitors are expected to attend the three-day showcase, which includes a swap meet, special exhibits, and a model and pedal car show. Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction, one of the most celebrated car auctions in the world, will return to Scottsdale Jan. 15-22, 2012 with more than 1,000 collector and special interest automobiles, along with 350 vendors and exhibitors. Also at WestWorld, this event is a must-attend for all car lovers and history buffs. Auto events continue with the Russo & Steele Collector Automobile Auction Jan. 18-22 where buyers and sellers from around the world showcase the very best in European sports, American muscle, Hot Rods and custom cars. With more than 700 cars on the auction block, Russo & Steele is one of the major players in the Scottsdale car auction scene. New to Scottsdale this year is Bonhams, a 217-year old auction house that teamed up with The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa for its inaugural Jan. 19 event. The highly-anticipated auction will feature several rare cars, including the late Andy Warhol's Rolls-Royce. Gooding & Company Auto Auction will cap off the month's car craze, with its Jan. 20-21 event. Held at Scottsdale Fashion Square, the auction will be packed with the leading exotic, antique, classic, sports and racing cars up for bid. For media information, contact Megan Neighbor at mneighbor@scottsdalecvb.com or 480-889-2716.
REACH MUSICAL NIRVANA IN SCOTTSDALE
Music has long been embedded in Scottsdale's nightlife and cultural offerings, but recently the tourism Mecca has turned the volume up. The new Center Stage Bar at Hyatt Regency Scottsdale Resort and Spa at Gainey Ranch offers live music every night of the week in a chic, but comfortable setting. Earlier this year, the resort designed a state-of-the-art sound system and installed a stage in what was then-called the Lobby Bar. Now, you can get a front row view of artists such as The Waters, a husband and wife duo whose powerful vocals and guitar melodies intertwine for the ultimate listening experience. Also on the weekly lineup is 16-year-old Lea Cappelli, who is making big splashes in the music scene despite her youth. Cappelli, whose rich jazzy style is reminiscent of Billie Holiday with a twist of Fiona Apple, was used in the original promo for the television show "The Voice." For media information, contact Ann Lane at ann.lane@hyatt.com or 480-483-5597.
A couple of nights each week, the trendy downtown restaurant turns into a live music venue with performers such as Bluesman Mike Anderson and singer, songwriter Angela Ferrari taking the stage. Enjoy drinks and delectable dishes in a casual setting while listening to the soulful tunes. MIXOLOGISTS CRAFT PERFECT BLEND OF PAST AND FUTURE AT THE CASABLANCA LOUNGE
At The Casablanca Lounge, the newest bar to hit downtown's nightlife scene, you'll find yourself caught between the past and future in an elegant cocktail haven that flirts with both timeless old-world style and forward-looking innovation. Cocktail aging barrels, hand-chiseled ice, homemade cordials, grenadines, infusions and the appropriate glass for virtually every drink are a few of the elements to ensure the lounge experience is truly all about the drink. The seasonal cocktail menu currently features a myriad of fall-inspired drinks. If you go, prepare your taste buds for The Side Door with Death's Door, Aperol, Cocchi Americano, and cucumber or the Stetson 75 with Plymouth, jasmine tea syrup, Yellow Chartreuse, lemon and bubbles.
Celebrating 10 Years of Scottsdale's Native Trails

Native Trails, presented by the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation and produced by the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, is celebrating its 10-year anniversary with an extended season of 19 performances that include special appearances by Native American artisans and culinary offerings by local food vendors. The free noontime festivals kick off Jan. 19 and run through April 14, 2012.

"Making it to the 10th season of Native Trails shows that there is a sincere interest in and appreciation for the art of Native American music and dance," said Derrick Suwaima Davis (Hopi/Choctaw), artistic director for Native Trails and five-time world-champion hoop dancer. "We have enjoyed sharing our rich heritage, which is a reflection of the unique geography of the beautiful Southwest, and look forward to seeing familiar faces and welcoming new guests in 2012."

Sponsored by the Scottsdale Convention & Visitors Bureau, Native Trails explores Native American culture through the art of song and dance. It brings together traditional instruments, colorful dances, and customary attire to showcase the traditions of various Southwestern tribes. Free performances take place from 12 to 1:30 p.m. on most Thursdays and Saturdays in the grassy outdoor amphitheater at Scottsdale Civic Center Park in downtown.

This season of Native Trails features Native American artisans who will make and sell specialty items like flutes and large-scale paintings on site. Native Trails' grand finale coincides with the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts' OrigiNation: A Festival of Native Cultures. The event, which celebrates the indigenous cultures of Australia and New Zealand through music and art, will feature Arizona's native traditions thanks to appearances by Native Trails performers.

Another element new to the 2012 season is a focus on food. Local merchants will sell fresh and packaged items indigenous to the Southwest and Arizona. Attendees can buy and take home bread, muffins, and soup mixes that combine staple ingredients used by Hopi, Pueblo, Navajo and Zuni tribes. Meanwhile, food vendors will sell local culinary delights that attendees can enjoy on the spot for a picnic in Scottsdale's sunny winter weather while watching the performances. Other highlights include special guests, new cast members and weekend appearances by Arizona Nations royalty.

Native Trails attendees are immersed in Arizona's unique native cultures, including tribes such as the Hopi, Diné, Akimel Au-Authm and San Carlos Apache. The sensory journey ends in an audience-participation round dance, bringing the immersion experience full circle.

Native Trails performances began in January 2003 as part of the City of Scottsdale's cultural tourism initiative, Culture Quest Scottsdale. The opportunity to experience Native American culture was the highest-rated arts and cultural desire revealed by the City's study of Scottsdale tourists, which is why the program was created. Last season (January - April 2011) had an average attendance of 338 with more than 5,400 people total in attendance.

OUT & ABOUT IN SCOTTSDALE

SCOTTSDALE AND STATE CELEBRATE MILESTONES AND LEGACIES
On June 25, 2011, Scottsdale celebrated its 60th anniversary (http://www.scottsdale60.com/). Leading up to the celebration were more than 60 events over 60 days highlighting the city's Western heritage and history and what makes Scottsdale a unique place to live and visit. Festivities included an old fashion cowboy campfire, rededication of prominent public art, historic tour of Scottsdale with the city's historian, a family scavenger hunt and the debut of the Scottsdale Spring Training History Exhibit at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts (http://www.scottsdaleperformingarts.org/).
Scottsdale's 60th birthday is just one significant milestone as the state of Arizona looks forward to its centennial on Feb. 14, 2012 (http://www.arizona100.org/). Throughout the year, each of Arizona's Territorial Capitols will present the state's diverse and vibrant culture, honor the past, and celebrate the future during a series of festivals known as Arizona Best Fest. The city of Phoenix will take its turn Feb. 10-12 and feature wineries, micro breweries, locally renowned restaurants, top chefs, regional art and merchandise crafted in Arizona as part of the state's support of the "Local First" movement. Other festivities include galas, motorcycle tours, outdoor festivals, culinary celebrations and down-home rodeos through 2011 leading into the centennial.
Also in 2012, Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin West (http://www.franklloydwright.org/) will celebrate 75 years. The exhibition Frank Lloyd Wright: Organic Architecture for the 21st Century will be at the Phoenix Art Museum (http://www.phxart.org/) Dec. 15, 2011 through April 30, 2012 and feature 33 never-before-shown drawings by "America's greatest architect" as well as rare home movies. Complementary programming ranging from symposiums and concerts to special events and enhanced tours will take place at Taliesin West, a National Historical Landmark throughout the year.

Downtown will get even hotter next summer when the nightlife and entertainment district welcomes Scottsdale Beach Club, the first high-end beach club bringing together entertainment, music, and food for day and nighttime fun. Scottsdale Beach Club is being developed by Triyar Entertainment, developers of the W Scottsdale Hotel & Residences (www.whotels.com/scottsdale), which opened in downtown Scottsdale in September 2008.

PAOLO SOLERI-DESIGNED BRIDGE BRINGS ART TO SCOTTSDALE'S WATERFRONT
Soleri Bridge and Plaza (http://www.scottsdalepublicart.org/) made its downtown debut along the waterfront in December 2010. Created by famed Italian designer Paolo Soleri, the bridge is the first one of the artist's concepts to be built, although he has designed more than 60 bridges over the past 60 years. The structure demonstrates the importance of solar movement and features two, steel-clad 64-foot-high pylons that create a shaft of light. Depending on the time of year, the sun's shadow crosses the bridge that spans onto the south side of the historic Arizona Canal. Cosanti (http://www.cosanti.com/), Soleri's gallery, studio and residence, and his "arcology" community Arcosanti, located one hour north of Scottsdale, showcase his philosophies.

FIRST GLOBAL MUSEUM OF MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS OPENS IN THE DESERT
Take a melodic journey through the world at the Musical Instrument Museum (http://www.themim.org/, MIM), the first global museum of instruments. The Museum opened in April 2010 and showcases cultures from around the globe with more than 14,000 instruments from nearly every country in the world. Transport to another land with wireless headsets and LCD video displays depicting the sounds and sights of the instruments and the people who use them. See the recreation of a gong workshop, listen to the sounds of the traditional Beijing Opera or experience a contemporary Ukrainian wedding procession. If pop culture is more your thing, head to MIM's Artist Gallery, which houses instruments from famous musicians throughout time including John Lennon, Paul Simon, the Black Eyed Peas and the Jonas Brothers. After enjoying a worldly concert, try out your own musical abilities in MIM's Experience Gallery, where you can play instruments such as guitars, gongs and drums. The museum also hosts concerts in its 299-seat performance hall.

NEWEST SPRING TRAINING FACILITY WRAPS UP INAUGURAL SEASON
The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community (SRPMIC) is the location of the newest Cactus League spring training facility, Salt River Fields at Talking Stick (http://www.saltriverfields.com/), for the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies. The word "fields" refers to the 12 practice fields located within the facility adjacent to the 11,000-seat ballpark and the Community's rich agricultural history. The term "Talking Stick" is a historical reference to the traditional Pima calendar stick on which carvers recorded significant events and milestones. During the off season, the facility plays host to various local and national musical performers including Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers, Blake Shelton, Casey James and Crystal Bowersox as well as special events like Arizona Cardinal Larry Fitzgerald's celebrity softball game, the Talking Stick Fine Art and Wine Festival, and Mountainside Fitness' AZUrbanAthalon.

Highlights of downtown's renaissance include the $250 million Scottsdale Waterfront (http://www.scottsdalewaterfront.com/) and $41 million SouthBridge (http://www.southbridgescottsdale.com/) along an ancient Indian canal system. The Scottsdale Waterfront is a 1.1 million-square-foot residential and retail development featuring a mix of national and local retailers and restaurants, public event space, an outdoor amphitheater, public art and recreation paths as well as two bridges across the Arizona Canal that link the Waterfront and Scottsdale Fashion Square mall to Scottsdale's Fifth Avenue shopping district and SouthBridge.
SouthBridge is an urban development along the south bank of the canal and the city's newest district. The borough brings together elite, high-fashion boutiques, independent shops, celebrated cuisine and art. Notably absent are any national chain stores, upholding the independent spirit of the district. Look for restaurants such as the herb box and Marcellino Ristorante along with boutiques like Amy, Inc. and JoyLi - each one unique in design and concept. Both the SouthBridge and Waterfront districts play host to several events throughout the year including the Arizona Barbeque Festival, a national competition featuring more than 60 teams of professional chefs competing for smokin' prizes.

Reopening in fall 2011 after a multi-million dollar facelift, The Drinkwater will showcase the colorful, vibrant spirit of the Southwest throughout the 195-room property. Known most recently as the Hotel Theodore (and Mondrian Scottsdale before that), this downtown property will include meeting space, a spa and three restaurants on property by Chef Jose Garces, one of the Food Network's seven Iron Chefs. The line-up will include Distrito, a modern Mexican restaurant and bar; The Saloon, a bar evocative of frontier drink parlors of old with a collection of domestic spirits and artfully crafted cocktails alongside Southwestern inspired dishes; and Garces Trading Company (GTC) Coffee To-Go, serving Chef Garces' custom-roasted GTC coffees and house baked goods. Bogey's, The Boulders' 19th hole, now includes flat screen TVs for the best views of the latest sporting events and a mix of comfy seating, and the new Bakery Café serves up decadent desserts and mouth-watering lunchtime fare reminiscent of any patisserie found in France.

CAREFREE RESORT FINISHES MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR MAKEOVER FOR ANNIVERSARY
The Carefree Resort & Conference Center (http://www.carefree-resort.com/) finished a year-long, multi-million dollar renovation to give the resort a more polished look without sacrificing its unique character. Major enhancements include transforming the Lariat Restaurant & Lounge from a private dining space to one fit for meetings and conventions, uplifting the aesthetics of the resort's meeting spaces and adding The Sonoran Suites at Carefree. This 60-room complex more easily accommodates large groups with a variety of room configurations including two- and three-bedroom adjoining suites. The Carefree Resort will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2012.

Nearly 5 million travelers move through the airport's busiest terminal annually and thanks to a massive project set to launch in January 2012, they will have gourmet options from top local restaurants. Scottsdale eateries that will make you hope your flight is delayed or even canceled at Terminal 4 include a slew of Sam Fox's concepts like Sauce, Blanco Tacos & Tequila and Olive & Ivy (http://www.foxrc.com/); long-time local favorite, Cowboy Ciao (http://www.cowboyciao.com/); and Barrio Café (http://www.barriocafe.com/) with sister restaurants opening soon in downtown Scottsdale.

ANOTHER JAMES BEARD CHEF JOINS SCOTTSDALE'S DINING SCENE
Chef Jose Garces, named the "Best Chef Mid-Atlantic 2009" by the James Beard Foundation, will make his Scottsdale debut with Distrito, the signature restaurant at downtown Scottsdale's newest hotel, The Saguaro, opening in fall 2011. He will serve as the consulting chef and play an integral part in the restaurant while working with the in-house chef de cuisine to showcase the diverse street food of Mexico City, known for its Barbacoa (Mexican barbecue). Tempt your taste buds with a selection of slow roasted meats cooked in an outdoor smoke pit and savor dishes like Suadero en Adobo, black angus beef brisket with dry adobo rub; Costillas, Berkshire pork spare ribs in chipotle-cider mustard BBQ sauce; and a menu of small plates featuring items like Mahi Mahi tacos in chipotle remoulade and Yellowfin tuna ceviche. Choose from more than 100 varieties of tequila from the Margarita Bar to find your perfect drink to complement the cuisine. And look for kitschy tributes to Mexico's luchas libres wrestlers, a wall constructed of decorative skulls commonly associated with the Mexican Day of the Dead celebration, and a "Piñata Stage" that will be used for live entertainment and B.Y.O.P (bring your own piñata) parties.

SCOTTSDALE MAKES ARIZONA WINE EXPLORATION EASY
Let Detours of Arizona (http://www.detoursaz.com/) guide you on a day-long exploration of Arizona's newest wine community in the scenic Verde Valley just south of Sedona. Offered Wednesdays and Saturdays, this fully guided tour features stops at four wineries and highlights some of Sedona's most picturesque landmarks including Bell Rock, Cathedral Rock and Airport Mesa Overlook. This full-day tour is $170 per guest and includes luxury ground transportation, guide services, wine tasting and lunch.
Continue the Arizona wine experience at FnB Restaurant (http://www.fnbrestaurant.com/), a trendy gastropub in the heart of downtown Scottsdale. The brainchild of hospitality master Pavle Milic (Prado) and Chef Charleen Badman (Rancho Pinot Grill), this dining spot is a neighborhood hangout that dishes out sophisticated comfort food and uses seasonal, local, organic and sustainable produce whenever possible. In an effort to accommodate and encourage guests to purchase locally-made juice to enjoy at home and during their dinner, Milic will open AZ Wine Merchants in fall 2011. This small retail store, conveniently located next door to FnB, will feature selections from Page Springs Cellars, Dribble Creek, Dos Cabezas, Keeling-Schaefer and Arizona Stronghold. This downtown eatery, which is a BYOB establishment until fall 2011, pays reverence to the state's burgeoning wine industry by waiving the corkage fee for Arizona wines.

DOWNTOWN DINING: THREE NEW HOT SPOTS FROM THREE OLD FAVORITES
Slated for a fall 2011 opening, Chef Silvana Salcido Esparza of Phoenix's Barrio Café (http://www.barriocafe.com/) will take over space in SouthBridge and open two new restaurant concepts. Silvana is set to embrace the "Euro-Mexican" concept and Barrio Queen Tequileria will be a more casual eat and drink spot. Both will represent Esparza's own style of Mexican cuisine developed through years of family culinary experiences and trips through Mexico's back roads and villages.
The restaurant opened in January 2011.
Mosey down to Big Earl's BBQ (http://www.bigearlsbbq.com/) in Old Town for some down and dirty barbeque eats. A new concept by Chef James Porter of the French bistro Petite Maison, the restaurant is named in homage to Porter's father. Since February 2011, Big Earl's showcases different regional barbecues like Texas-style brisket and St. Louis pork ribs. Other menu items include BBQ oysters, Catfish Po'Boy and roasted beef bone marrow with pickled okra.

ENJOY GOLDEN DOOR DESERT HARVEST FROM THE INSIDE OUT
The Boulders Resort & Golden Door Spa's (http://www.theboulders.com/) on-site organic garden serves as the muse for the property's new seasonal offerings. Nourish your skin with fresh fruit and vegetables from the garden with the Golden Door Spa's seasonal body scrubs, including pear and green apple in the fall, cranberry and pomegranate during the winter, blueberries in the spring, and cucumber mint during the summer. But you don't get to just wear your food - you can eat it too at the property's Dining With the Stars Dinners. Enjoy the scenery of the plentiful harvest during the five-course wine dinners featuring produce-themed menus set among the sights and smells of the garden. Astrologer Tom McMullan is on hand to reveal the mysticism of the constellations and planets and how the two work together to influence personal wellness. Dining with the Stars costs $95 per person and includes a cocktail reception, dinner and spiritual readings by McMullan. The event occurs only three times each year: on the fall and spring equinoxes and the summer solstice. Other ways to enjoy the organic offerings include taking a tour of the garden with the master gardener and cooking demonstrations.

SCOTCH, MUSIC AND CADDIES - NOT YOUR FATHER'S GOLF GAME
Scottsdale courses are putting a hip, young spin on the traditional game with cool offerings such as the Scottish Golf Experience at Kierland Golf Club (http://www.kierlandgolf.com/). To honor Scottish immigrants who helped develop Arizona and make the game truly authentic, don rented kilts and enjoy Johnnie Walker beverages while perfecting your swing. If there was one course in Scottsdale deemed edgy, Grayhawk Golf Club (http://www.grayhawkgolf.com/) would be it. Not only can you swing to rock music on the practice range, but the course also has featured live tunes by EastonAshe on the patio.

GOLF INITIATIVES PRESERVE NATURAL SONORAN DESERT SURROUNDINGS
Golf operators in Scottsdale are making strides to preserve the city's Sonoran Desert surroundings through modern technology, innovative practices and a commitment to environmental stewardship. The golf industry's efforts not only ensure a protected environment for generations of future visitors, but also help put Scottsdale on the forefront of eco-friendly golf destinations. (http://www.golfinscottsdale.com/)

Water Use - Because Scottsdale is in a desert environment, conservation and efficient use of water is always top-of-mind for the city's golf industry. Nearly 75 percent of Scottsdale's golf courses use sophisticated computerized irrigation systems and weather monitoring stations to maximize the efficiency of their water use. These systems apply the minimum amount of water required to maintain the health of individual plants in addition to minimizing evaporation and maximizing transpiration.

Maintenance - Scottsdale golf courses also have modified their regular maintenance practices to increase the sustainability of their properties. Efforts include using organic fertilizer rather than petroleum-based fertilizer, switching gas-powered equipment from two-stroke engines to four-stroke in order to reduce emissions, and frequent testing of soil conditions to ensure proper application using the minimum amount of product to ensure the plants' health.

Environmental Stewards - Golf properties in Scottsdale like Sanctuary Golf Course at West World (http://www.sanctuarygolf.com/), TPC Scottsdale (www.tpc.com/scottsdale), and Camelback Golf Club (http://www.camelbackgolf.com/) continue to look for new eco-friendly opportunities to ensure that golf maintains its overall positive impact on the city and state. The courses have all achieved, or are working toward, certification in the Audubon International Cooperative Sanctuary Program, a program that requires golf facilities to protect the earth by enhancing precious natural areas and wildlife habitats. In addition, Scottsdale-based Troon Golf Management (http://www.troongolf.com/) has made the commitment to have its entire portfolio of 190 golf properties worldwide certified through the Audubon initiative.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (July 5, 2011) - To generate repeat business and entice meeting attendees to return to Scottsdale as a leisure visitor, the Scottsdale Convention & Visitors Bureau is launching the Come to Work, Come Back to Play (on us!) promotion. The campaign is designed to give meeting attendees a complimentary night stay on a return trip after attending a meeting at a participating hotel or resort.

Repeat visitors are particularly valuable to Scottsdale's tourism industry as they spend 12 percent more per night than first-time visitors, according to research conducted by the Scottsdale bureau.

"We often hear from meeting attendees that they fall in love with Scottsdale while in town for an event and would like to come back for a family vacation," said Brent DeRaad, the bureau's executive vice president. "This campaign is designed to influence meeting planners to consider Scottsdale for their next event, while a planner can use the program to attract more attendees, and our resorts and hotels have the opportunity to generate additional revenue from repeat guests."

How it Works
The Come to Work, Come Back to Play (on us!) promotion is available for meetings with non-commissionable rates with a minimum of 25 room nights booked on peak night at a participating property through the Scottsdale bureau. Each attendee will receive a certificate from the host hotel to stay two nights and receive the third night free from May through September within one year of the meeting. The promotion is available to new meetings booked by June 30, 2012, and that actualize by Dec. 31, 2012.

All total, 15 upper moderate and luxury resorts in the Scottsdale area are participating. For complete details, visit www.comebackonus.com.
