So… we folks here at Scout get around. Go to one or two events, chat to certain industry people over a glass of whatever or 3. <br/>

Seems the name on everyone’s lip at the moment is Art Vs Science. Good work lads. Keep it up.

When considering what the best venues may be, we may keep in mind a few different criteria - how is the seating/standing? What is the general aesthetic /decor of the venue? How is the PA? What’s the vibe in the place? How expensive is the entry and the food/drinks inside? Who are the regulars? We also should consider from which perspective are we rating the venue - as players or as punters? As players, how is the stage space and set up? How’s the house crew/sound guy? How easy is loading in/out? Do you get paid fairly? And again, who are the regulars? Enthusiastic moshing ravers or sit down with wine in hand dilettantes? (Dilettantes is my new word of the week, thanks Tim)

So with those aspects in mind here are some of my faves (as a punter) :

1. The Vanguard, Newtown - Hands down, this has to be my fave music venue. I absolutely adore how the place looks, like stepping into a not so-distance time with the red walls and lace lantern shades, low lighting, and the intimacy of the room. I’ve never paid more than $15 for a show, and the acts gracing the stage are always top notch - it is pretty much the only place I will go to chance new music, because I know I am going to like the atmosphere of the place regardless. The staff are groovy and fun, and the food is yummy if you so indulge. My only complaint - bring back the cheese sticks, dammit!

2. The Basement, Circular Quay - Again, I like the coziness of this place and the intimacy with the performers, who often feel free to wander off the stage and into the seated audience. I wasn’t to thrilled with the burger I had there once, but the nachos were good. I suggest booking or nabbing a table as the bum suffers on the bar stools as the evening wears on.

3. The Enmore Theatre, Enmore - It’s always grand to walk into the Enmore, and feel its history. The seats aren’t all that crash hot, but you really can’t have a bad one in this venue for a view of the stage.  It’s a bit disappointing when the balcony is closed as I prefer the view from there.

I have never heard bad sound in any of these venues, and the audiences are enthusiastic but civil. I guess you can gather from my choices that I prefer seated shows that don’t necessarily attract the pub mob. While the Metro is a rock icon of a venue in Sydney, my two issues with it is the beer laden carpet and the fact my five foot 3 self can never see anything but the backs of other people’s heads, unless I get there 10 hours before the show to be first to run for a claim on a railing. I’m also not a big fan of the dingy tiny hole in the wall venues that cram 200 people into a space appropriate for only about 100, regardless of their legacies as the other iconic Sydney rock venues. Yeah, it’s easy to have a sell out the Spectrum or Hopetoun- only about 80 people can fit in there!

So what do you think are the best venues in Sydney and why? Which ones do you like to play? Which ones to you like to go see gigs in?

Well……… we’ve been on a production break, and it’s extended for a bit longer than we expected. We’re re-jigging everything to bring a better website, a punchier show and to be a TOTALLY national TV show.

We’re adding some services, like getting a DVD monthly to A&R. Like a band comp that is actually worth winning - every six months an act will be given all the tools for an industry push and a bunch of other stuff to support bands, singers, musicians, writers and heaps more.

New kid on the block is Aralie - www.aralie.com - which uses a pay-what-you-want model for downloading music mavens. The idea is if people really think your music is worth something, they will chuck up the cash for it. Whether or not this really happens remains to be seen, but in the event they do, artists keep 85% of all sales, and another 2% goes to charity. As the site is in its early days, the site founders are keen to give press and exposure to as many participating bands as possible. Internet nerds will recognise CNET as one of the premier websites for free software downloads and evaluations, but were you aware they have expanded into music as well? music.download.com is a place you can put up your profile and upload your M3P’s for people to freely help themselves to. There are two advantages to this site - one is the site tracks how many times your songs are listened to via streaming, and how many time your songs are downloaded. If you find your song has been downloaded 10,000, it’s very possible you have a market out there for you music - seriously, download counts are as solid a statistic as record sales and MySpace Profile views - it is evidence of interest in what you are doing. Second, the site has an MP3 of the Day application in which a new MP3 is emailed to subscribers each day. The service has a matching Facebook application that also sends the MP3 of the Day to the profiles of users who have added the application. So one of your songs has the chance of being randomly sent to millions of people for exposure. That can’t be too shabby!

Wolfmother’s ascension to international fame was relatively quick compared to the years of slogging out the majority of bands encounter before even gaining a sliver of recognition. Was it being in the right place at the right time, knowing the right people, having a product that stood above the rest? Maybe a mix of all?

The rapid journey was clearly not without its price and strain. Stating plainly that “in spite of their best efforts over a long period of time, they just could not find a harmonious way to work together”, one has to wonder if things were harmonious at one point and the pressure of success cracked it, or were frictions always part of the band chemistry and success exacerbated the rifts?

It’s not a new story and Wolfmother is not the first (nor will be the last) band to implode in the limelight. The press loves a good catfight, but what I find more intriguing are the bands that do endure, successfully, peacefully, and continue to make relevant amazing music. Bands like U2 and Rush are anomalies in the rock music industry, have been together for decades, with no line up changes since early days, no break-ups and comebacks, and having remained productive in touring and recording since their formations. What these two bands in particular have in common is first and foremost the members of the bands are friends. Not just band friends, but life friends.

Being in a band is a marriage. Look at your band mates. Are they people you are prepare to commit the rest of your life to? Do you all have common goals? Who is in the band as a hobby and who is in it become a touring/recording musician professional? How much success is enough? Do you just want to clear a livable wage from your music or do you want to be on the cover of Rolling Stone (in Australia, the UK, AND the US)?

Success in a band is no accident - it is the result having your shit together, which means you have common goals and a plan, and in time, bringing the right people into your team to support you in those goals and plans. Failure is also not an accident - when band mates make assumptions about each other or situations, don’t communicate, or “put up” with contentious matters hoping they will go away or change for the better. Guess what, they don’t.

When is the last time you sat down with your band mates and really got on the level about what you are doing and reflected on how you communicate with each other? Does someone dominate the group? Does everyone air their opinions, or do some bottle them up? If someone is difficult to work with now, do you really think they will be easier to work with if you some how do manage to attract success?

Finding that musical chemistry with others can be elusive enough, but without the personal chemistry, at best expect a short, bumpy ride that may be over before it really starts.

I find indie a terribly confusing term - is it a state, an attitude, a disposition, a situation, a genre, a badge of honour, a phase one passes through, or a style?? What do you think?

Every week I make a valiant effort to pick up and read our local street press from cover to cover. I pick up Brag to see if my face has made it to the social pages (their articles are a bit too �??hip�?? and regularly lack in actual quality content); I occasionally grab D-World to feel as though I�??m somewhat up-to-date with the local dance and electronica scene (though secretly I just skip straight to their horoscopes section for a light-hearted witty chuckle); and of course I read The Drum Media to hear about new music, work out what bands I�??m seeing that week and to generally feel �??informed�??.

Though for a long time whilst reading the Drum, the paper cuts induced from having to flip through so many advertisements and unappealing articles on international (or sold out �??Aussies�??) rather than true blue local ones has been getting me down (note: novelty bandaids help). Besides, who doesn�??t just jump straight to the �??gig guide�?? section and if I wanted to read about Radiohead�??s latest droning record or Amy Winehouse�??s (ass)crack addiction, I�??d spend my hard earned cash on a fricking Rolling Stone!

I can�??t remember the last time I�??ve read a whole feature article on real local bands, eg. Mz Ann Thropik, The Blush Foundation or Art vs. Science (yeah, I�??m mentioning my favourite Scout bands�?� objectivity has never been my forte!). But bands, never fear!! No longer shall bands with pr managers and record companies take preference over you!!

A new music street press has graced our shores. It�??s called MUSIC FEEDS. By the looks of things, music actually does feed this publication, LOCAL music at that. As their manifesto describes, �??Music Feeds [is] the new support vehicle for the independent music/arts scene, of Sydney and beyond�??. (Sounds frighteningly similar to the manifesto of some music show screen on TVS?!?) Not only is their focus on independent  music and arts, it is also an INDEPENDENT PUBLICATION! Independent media and music? I�??m so excited it�??s a bit too much to take in really.

They claim to be �??trying to encourage a culture of co-operation, originating in our industry of music, and then ideally spilling over into broader society�??. Whilst this aspect of their manifesto is a bit of hippy bull crap for me to really believe, their intentions are so inspiring that I can�??t help but give them the highest props for effort.

It’s all part of the hard knocks school of live performing, especially in pubs where the drink and jabbering jaws flow aplenty - from being an unknown band that no one pays attention to and everyone talks right through your set, to the other end of the gamut of gaining unwanted attention from the failed comedians who some how think they should be on the stage with you and baiting you to respond. How you respond to these situations will be one mark of your professionalism (or lack there of).

Do you play on and ignore, do you respond, and if so, with humour, with anger, with nonchalance? Personally, I love stealing other people’s material, so if I hear a good comeback, I like to stow it away in case of future need. Another Rogers classic to a heckler: “Yeah, well your girlfriend thinks I’m better looking than you”. Comedian Colin Quinn to a heckler at a stand up comedy gig: “I would come down there and kick your ass but I don’t want to hurt the gerbil.” It’s a good thing my mates in Kang have a song called “Wish You Were Dead” which came in handy at the Annandale one night when they dedicated it to a heckler who was soon driven from the room by the faithful.

So what has been your best comeback? How do you handle “live audience” situations that are potentially distracting to your performance and the enjoyment of the other audience members? How have you prevailed in moments which tested your mettle and potentially affected (for better or worse) your reputation as a live act?

While I think I understand the intent to shock and create a moniker that will get noticed above others, I wonder just how long bands such as these will endure under such novelty names. Firstly, a band name is a brand, a way to sell your produce (you and your music). A band name says who you are. When the name consists of graphic violence or profanity, I wonder what the band is trying to say about itself and its music and what crowd they wish to attract.

Secondly, what is the staying power of such a “branding”…will this be a band we’ll see on the cover of Drum Media, Rolling Stone, or reviewed in Sydney Morning Herald? Will such a name limit opportunities for coverage and exposure in wider media? Methinks it will.

We see lots of bands come and go in the Sydney scene…many with the same musos reforming or creating new collectives with new names. For more established bands, trivial stories of how they came up with their band name often become the stuff of rock lore (such as Keith Moon telling Jimmy Page his new band would go over like a lead balloon, birthing the name…..well, you should really know by now).

Picking a band name is no easy task, though some bands have treated the exercise with frippery (Canadian group Max Webster took their name by randomly flipping open a phone book and one of the members dropping their finger on a name on the page). Others deliberately try to think of a name to convey an image (think The Polyphonic Spree) . Or to not convey an image but rather to be ambiguous (think U2 or REM, names chosen for not bringing anything into mind in particular).

So what is in a name to you? How has your band gone about choosing a name and what are you trying to say or not say with that name? Which bands in the scene right now have great names and why?

Firstly, obviously not all venues are created equal, nor do they uniformly share target markets - so maybe the statement really means “there’s nowhere to play my kind of music in Sydney!”

Secondly, a quick squiz of street press shows the venue ads busting with live music, but the same bands, most with some sort of label or major booker support, seem to be playing in all of them. Maybe the battle cry is really “there’s nowhere for new independent bands who need a break to play in Sydney!” This I have a hard time fully believing though as there are many indie band nights or open mics at numerous venues, including some Sydney icons like the Hopetoun and the Annandale.

I have been intrigued by a recent spate of letters to one particular street press mag about the fragmentation of the Sydney music scene - one argument was well presented about the transport situation in Sydney in which makes it difficult to reach some venues (the fact there is no direct way to get from Newtown to Rozelle/Balmain on public transport gets my goat). I can understand why someone may be reluctant to venture too far out of their suburb for a local band when it is difficult to find parking at the venue, catching a cab raises the price of an evening out considerably, and late night bus/train service home is infrequent and spotty.

The other argument, often mentioned when comparing Sydney to the scene in Melbourne, is about the liquor licensing laws which have until recently made opening more intimate venues cost prohibitive. As I have expressed before though, I am uncomfortable with the close alliance of alcohol and live music - we should not have to depend on one to see the other thrive.

The final aspect I would like to put up for consideration is the sheer number of bands and musos in Sydney taking a punt. This I cannot put a number on, but from venue bookers I know, the numbers of requests they get from bands is astronomical. And there is no way to make everyone happy. So maybe the lament is “there is nowhere for MY BAND to play, because no one is letting us in!”

In the end, it is the music business and when all things are equal, I wouldn’t blame a booker who goes with the safer bet (a band who has proven they can pull punters) than an unknown quantity. This is a bit of a chicken- egg dilemma, as doesn’t a band have to be placed in front of people initially so their music can be heard and punters ‘discover’ them? Perhaps this is where festivals play a role?

Despite all the hype and the practical functional use of having a MySpace profile, I do question many aspects of its marketing power for indie bands. Firstly, I am finding it hard to see how to rise above the “noise” of MySpace, in that EVERYONE is on it, so it takes that much more effort to stick out and be noticed. Having kick-ass songs is not enough, as the internet airwaves are drowning in music, some if it amazing, more if it of questionable quality and merit. Secondly, the big boys on majors are on there too - how many individuals’ profiles are filled with indie bands as “friends” - isn’t more fun to say you are friends with Daniel Johns and Coldplay? Are people really seeking out new music or just seeking the music they already know from name acts they already love?
And speaking of friends, how many people ask to be your friend so they can spam your profile with “come see our band at the gasworks this Friday!” (The approve comments feature is useful for minimising this abuse).

I certainly would not recommend anyone abandon MySpace from their amory of online marketing tools. But I would like to know how other bands are using it and where they see MySpace’s role in their over all marketing strategy. Is it your flagship profile or just one of many you have in cyberspace across a landscape of social networking sites? Is is a good measurement tool of your true fanbase or do you compliment it with other fan reach programs, such as Facebook and Reverbnation? How cruicial is your having your own website in addition to MySpace, or is MySpace all you need?

And most importantly, how often have you discovered new music solely through MySpace? Was it enough to get you to go out to see a gig by the unknown indie band? Be honest……

2. Entry fee for punters, door person asks who they have come to see, the band is paid by the number of heads they bring in - The upside is if you have a loyal fanbase, you can make some good change out of this. It can also be good when bands with established fan bases play on bills with new bands who can take advantage of playing in front of a new crowd and hopefully convert some people. Of course, the downside is newer bands without a fanbase stand to get paid pretty much zilch! So you must balance playing some of the gigs with the target of growing your fanbase and swallow the finanical loss.

3. Entry fee for punters, after all tech support and such are paid, headliners get the biggest chunk, and other bands get less - Upside, some dosh for everyone, downside is income depends on crowd size again, and if you’re not pulling them, you may not get to play that venue again (which I guess can be said most all the scenarios). Also, it seems most people will only want to pay to hear bands they already know and like - a hard spot to be in if you are a band just trying to get heard.

4. Flat fee agreed payment upfront - great deal if you can get it through a booker or agent. This prolly is really only available to acts who are proving they can pull the heads through the doors. If there is a downside, I suppose it may be you could be pulling in more money for the venue and bookers than you are getting a share of.

It’s hard to know what is really fair for everyone involved - not that the issue is about money grubbers, but rather we all want to do this full time and be able to pay our rents and mortages off it. And venue managers, bookers, agents, sound guys, technicians, managers - we all deserve our fair share. What are the best ways to give a new band live gig exposure when punters will rarely be willing to pay to give it a chance?

Personally, I also think it would be great if all the venues were consistent on their payment scheme, but I would love to hear differing opinions.

Solo is the kind of MC that wears his heart on his sleeve and then has the nerve to rap about it. Less concerned with battle raps than with the battle of the day-to-day, he seems much more at ease analysing and even celebrating his flaws than trying to convince you he doesn�??t have any. Solo is a close affiliate of up-and-coming wonderkids Spit Syndicate (Obese Records); having toured NSW and VIC with the group, and features extensively on their forthcoming LP Towards The Light. Adit�??s production is predominantly sample-based; drawn from a variety of sources and styles but tied together by a strong sense of musicianship. Combining samples with a number of different live instruments, his beats have a rich and distinctive flavour which affords Horrorshow a real depth in sound.

Music is so disposable in today�??s landscape that it is a rarity for artists to hone their craft and develop their skills before releasing material �?? yet this is exactly the approach that Horrorshow have taken. After meeting in high school in 2000, the pair wound up working on a few drama projects together. Fuelled by a common interest in beats and rhymes, they began working on tracks in secret before finally accepting their pipe dreams of rap stardom and forming the Horrorshow crew in 2007.

Amongst many other things, Horrorshow is inspired by a mutual love of music, and although their tracks are firmly rooted in the tradition of underground hip hop, they are influenced by a range of different musical styles. At just under an hour in length, The Grey Space is a cohesive musical project, with tracks ranging in mood from up-beat and punchy to dark and introspective. Featuring verses from Nick Lupi and Just Enuf of Spit Syndicate as well as Sydney stalwart Fame, who oversaw the mixing and mastering of the album, The Grey Space is an exciting taste of what�??s to come from this up-and-coming pair from Sydney�??s inner west.

Sometimes sad and sometimes fun, some times proud and some times humble, some times black and some times white, The Grey Space is music that is, above all, heartfelt and honest. So keep your ear to the ground and/or your local radio station, cos in 2008 �?? grey is the new black.

For the last 3 years they�??ve been rocking out around Adelaide and Australia, from the Thebarton Theatre in Adelaide to the Wollongong Entertainment Centre and every where else in between! They rock harder at each new show and love doing what they do best.

• I was listening to My Ninja Lover’s EP last night. I really can not rave

enough about the quality of this album. To think, Brisbane has such

incredibly talented musicians hidden in its recesses.. wow. This world is

incredibly fortunate, let alone Brisbane. 

Just listening through the glorious tracks, one can hear the produced

drumming rhythms. They are perfect; on time with never a flaw. Thanks to an

excellent training, these musicians truly understand what depth in sound

actually means. These beats are breathtakingly profound and brimming with

depth in their flawlessness.

Q: Why are these beats so flawless? 

A: Because they are reproduced from a machine. 

Quite a thought really. As a trained musician, it is a severe kick to the

ego that a machine can produce such sounds. Oh, and yes: you really do need

to hear this album and pay particular attention to the beats. I strongly

suggest you do so.

And thus the thought has occurred to me: could a live drummer produce the

same beats? Can our drummers evolve to the point where they can churn out

the amazing beats that we currently rely on from a drum machine? 

Surely we can. 

Grant Collins (one fine Brisbane based drummer!) is such a monster on his

kit - he can do any meter, any pace, any rhythm, any beat. Try clapping 7

beats in your left hand and clapping 11 beats in your right with all of

them eventually coming out on 1 at exactly the same time. That is Grant

Collins - an organic drum machine. Granted, Grant is an extraoardinarily

talent on kit. 

So perhaps the drumming technique requires a reformation. I don�??t know

enough about drums to even being speaking technically about this. But

surely the technique can be developed to allow a drummer’s sticks to hit

the drums faster? Its not necessarily about the drummer playing faster -

hell.. he or she produces an incredible amount of energy already! Perhaps,

it’s more about the sticks hitting the skins quicker and in a different way

that enables them to produce 160BPMs. 

I do have to ask: Why use a machine - simply because it is convenient? 

Certainly, a machine can and do enhance or compliment and make life better

and easier in this world. But why cant humans try a different technique in

order to achieve the same sound? 

I personally don�??t believe in Stockhausen’s attitude that human error

shames a composer�??s fine work. It is the produced human �??imperfections

�?? or, as I like to refer to as �??gaffe�?? - that makes the musical piece

a great deal more interesting. (Why is this world so intent on achieving

perfection anyway? Why place such pressure upon one self?). 

I recall the performance of a band. Funky Miracle was an excellent band

made up of some of the most masterly musicians to grace this east coast .

And during a performance, they collectively made a mistake. The sort where

you are all meant to go to the C Section but a main instrument continues

with the Chorus instead, which means you have to follow his lead or sound

really stupid. The only issue if you do continue with the chorus is that

you have to repeat the bars another eight times. �?? and this can lead to

immediate boredom if one is not very careful. Well, on this occasion, Funky

Miracle were very careful. At the time, the crowd had also suspected the

band may have made a gaffe. 

However, thanks to their amazing musicality, this gaffe was turned around

into an incredible piece of improvisation I’ve ever heard outside of a

Chick Corea/Herbie Hancock/ Weather Report/ Miles Davis recording.  Indeed,

the gem they turned this gaffe into was breathtaking. As long as every muso

came out on one, the timing and ensuing melodies could be whatever they

wanted �?? regardless of how far the boundaries of basic music principle

were pushed. Gaffed precision.

So. To return to point. If drum machines and computers are taking over from

a drummer, is it time for the drummer�??s technique to evolve? Or the kit?

crowd back but it was a great ‘get up and move’ show.  How can you not? 

With Jon bringing in 60% female crowd, Ian brought in the males which

balanced the audience with passion and electricity. I have been going to

gigs for many years now and there’s not enough rock till you drop music out

there.  People are craving good old rock and roll.  They want to not only

feel the music but want to live the music!

I’m going to Powderfinger and Chaka Khan next week and then Jimmy Barnes

next month.  Will keep you posted on how a real crowd feel the love and

know  how to rock!

night. I mean, I like most styles of music, but I don’t think a tone-deaf

screamo band opening the night followed by an acoustic duo who are in turn

followed by the headline act; a doom metal band, really works. Call me

crazy, but can’t we musicians start to get organised so bands can call

venues with 2 or 3 other bands prepared to play together on the one night?

At least this way we’re more likely to get a solid night of

rock/country/metal/whatever music you want, instead of punters being

subjected to a variety of music styles even commercial radio would be proud

of.

Happenstance have been playing the Sydney scene for less than a year and have wasted no time producing their first EP along side ARIA award winning producer/engineer Anton Hagop (Silverchair, Powderfinger, the Dissociatives). This stylistically varied debut serves as an entree to Happenstance�??s extensive repertoire. Two of the EP tracks recently made into the top 30 in the national New Artists 2 Radio (2007) competition and in September ‘If I’m Not Mistaken’ debuted in the newly launched mp3.com.au charts at number 1.

Happenstance have received airplay as well as being interviewed and playing live, on community radio in Sydney (including FBI), Newcastle, Hawkesbury & the Southern Highlands.

Happenstance have played at venues such as the Annandale, the Hopetoun, the Excelsior, the Cat & Fiddle, HQ, Mandarin Club, Orange Grove Hotel and Vic on the Park and Windsor�??s infamous Jolly Frog Hotel and recently took their show on the road to Newcastle.

Like any other modern genre, Le Kingste’s dark pop is an amalgam of other musics, and there is something in it for everyone. Musos appreciate its ‘intricate simplicity’, and all listeners agree that there’s something compelling about it, a certain something that they haven’t quite heard before. With their intense stage presence, impassioned performance, and burgeoning repertoire of memorable originals, Le Kingste are a band that belongs on your “must-see” list for 2008.

Le Kingste have just released their debut self title EP with their EP launch happening at Spectrum on the 19th of June supported by bands ‘The Butcher’ and ‘Snobscrilla’.

The band was formed in 2005 by singer, actor and contemporary tribal dancer Malina Hamilton-Smith and drummer & programmer Glenn Abbott (best known for his work in popular Australian band Machine Gun Fellatio).

In November 2007 the pair were awarded the prestigious Best Alternative Artist Award at the 2007 MusicOz Awards (Australia�??s premier national music awards for unsigned and independent bands), for evocative, synth-rock song �??Fists In My Pocket�??, which you can hear on this page. Not bad for an act that hadn’t yet had a CD release and hadn’t received a scrap of airplay. The band was the cover feature on indie music zine LoopOz 5, and Malina managed the front cover of Drum Media that month too. Talented young guitarist Marc Malouf began playing with the duo in 2007, and the equally as talented and super funky bassist Tak Tanimoto joined the band at the beginning of the year.

Super Massive’s debut EP (which includes the award-winning song “Fists In My Pocket”), is out now in stores through MGM Distribution.

�??The album covers serious experiences, but does it in a very playful way musically,�?? says Sarah. The Hunter Valley native launched her professional career in Sydney and then broadened her repertoire in New York. �??It�??s serious fun because I wanted it to be musically light-hearted, even though some of the topics were quite painful for me at the time. The songs cover difficult topics that anyone can relate to, especially love and loss, but there�??s always humour that comes out of the carnage.�??

Sarah�??s self-penned lyrics are matched with the serious chops and composing skills of jazz guitarist David Longo. Together they have produced a collection of songs that blend honest lyrics with the serious sounds of Sarah�??s jazz quintet, including bassist Jonathan Brown, drummer Nic Cecire and keyboard virtuoso Gary Daley, who performs on piano, Rhodes, Hammond and accordion.

Both Sarah and David have had diverse musical careers, performing a range of styles with numerous artists. �??We�??ve paid the bills by doing lots of different types of gigs for other people, from pop to rock and dance,�?? says Sarah. �??David and I have a strong love of jazz, but our eclectic backgrounds give our jazz sound an extra dimension of colour.�?? Sarah has sung with Vanessa Amarosi, Richard Clapton and Joe Camillieri, and performed at such notable venues as New York�??s Bitter End and at Sydney�??s Basement and Will &. Toby�??s Supper Club. David formerly played with the Australian Idol studio band for the show�??s first two seasons, recorded with Paulini for her debut album and performed with Doug Parkinson.

 Friday night, 9th May, kicking off from 8pm, Foghorn Records are leading the way with helping young artists get established on the live scene by showcasing four of the bands off the latest Grow You Own compilation series. We were at the album launch last night and the caliber of the artists is off the wall.  The event will be at Balmain’s Cat & Fiddle (456 Darling St, Balmain) and the cost is $10. 

 Kicking off the night is Roymackonkey, followed by Not Quite Velvet, Reflector and Transit Inc

Scout: First of all, tell me how the band came together.

Kitty: The band came together in 2 parts. Janine and I had been working on
musical projects for a while with other people and had decided we
wanted to go our own direction. At the same time she was working on
sound design for Vincent’s Mypetskeleton productions website so
eventually Vincent entered as a our design guru from that direction.
Steve our guitar player just joined the Hollow army about a year and a
half ago.

Scout: Tell us some interesting things which have been going on for the band.

Kitty: Well we’ve just released our first label album so there are lots of
exciting things going on these days. We’ve been working up our live
show playing as often as we can. We are currently in the process of
booking several small mini tours around Canada for the summer. We’ve
been gaining steady airplay around the country but have just been
played on the big rock station here in Toronto 102.1 The Edge. We are
about to be included in a new book by Mick Mercer due out this summer
and we’re working on our first music video. These are exciting times
for the band which up until now was a rather slow moving affair.

Scout: What are some goals for the band over the next 12 months?

Kitty: Well for us getting the live show is top priority. For many years we
were mostly an internet band since most of our fans were overseas.
Bringing our songs to a live audience is so exciting and we hope to be
able to expand this geographically very soon.

Scout: Let’s talk about the creative process. Is it collaborative, or does one
person come in with a skeletal outline for a track, and build from
there?

Kitty: For us the creative process changes for each song. Some songs are more
personal for a particular member so they end up being penned mostly by
one person, while other songs are created through collaboration. I
think it is our varied writing styles that allows the music to change
from song to song so easily.

Scout: What is the most enjoyable part of being in a band? Tell us about
gigging, writing, recording…what’s the best?

Kitty: I can only speak for myself but my favourite part is gigging. With
recordings the final mix is the final mix. If there is something you
don’t like you are stuck with it. While playing live, you can change
anything you want to and keep reinventing the songs over and over. Add
to that the energy from the audience and you can’t top it for me.

Scout: Can you tell me about the name Johnny Hollow? What does it mean?

Kitty: The band meaning has no particular meaning although if we went into
the whole process which is too long there is a reason for it. We like
to think of Johnny as a character that is all that is the very best
and the very worst of the four of us.

Scout: What are some common themes in the band’s mucic?

Kitty: I wouldn’t say we’re terribly overt about any one particular subject
but throughout the album there are touches of politics, personal
demons, failure, deception, hurt, protection, religion .. you know..
really happy stuff. smile.

Scout: How about inspiration? Where do you find it?

Kitty: I think we all find our inspiration in different places. For me I find
it in the people I meet, the things in life I don’t understand and the
parts of me I’m still discovering.

Scout: Tell us some of your career highlights…

Kitty: My career highlights are the moments when I get to meet someone young
that is inspired by the music I create. I remember being them and
thinking that my idols were these unreachable people. It is nice to
give someone a hug, be real to them and hope they pass it on.

Singer Sam Dillon has the sort of vocal depth that commands instant attention, going from a dirty snarl to a raucous rock yell to a restrained semi-croon at the drop of a hat. Probably his own hat too… Queen Of The Scene, which Shake have played on Scout, is criminally catchy, and has had people ’round the Scout office requesting a chorus whenever we bump into Mr Dillon. Targeting all the fakes and posers who get all the press for just being alive, Queen Of The Scene is just the sort of wake up call the rock scene needs.

From there it just gets better and better. Weak Boy Chorus is an anthem for anyone who’s ever felt discontent with themselves and those around them. Whatchawant is a fast rocker, and Eat Your Heart Out has one of the best climax’s I’ve heard in a song in quite a while. Dillon screams his little lungs out.

The production on this EP is good, but like all Lamar Lowder productions, sounds a bit too familiar (if you’ve heard his other work). Check Shake out live to see what they really sound like.

You won’t be disappointed.

The album, however, is pretty damn good. It’s loud, fun, and got just enough sass to keep a smile on your face.
Labretta Suede has a voice which is equal parts Courtney Love and P.J Harvey. She sings like she knows the punchline to a joke she’s not yet told. There’s a cheekiness about her (just take a look at the photo on the back of the cd booklet!) that is almost tangible. The Motel 6 play with the sort of suave drunkenness you’d expect from a rockabilly group, and really shine. Standout tracks are ‘Boogaloo’, ‘Girls Like Betty’, and the song about their drummer, ‘Mr Mysterious’.

Labretta Suede & The Motel Six official Myspace

By mixing traditional, soulful blues with contemporary trends, this young woman delivers a CD full of captivating tracks. Where she really shines, though, is on the slowed down, bluesey numbers. Tracks like ‘Can’t Live’, ‘Breaking Point’ and ‘A Faerie’s Tale’ showcase perfectly the power and passion embedded in her voice. The more upbeat, jazz tinged numbers, ‘Amsterdam Sky’, ‘Game On’, are like gusts of a cool breeze, adding a breath of fresh air to the album.

Zkye Compson-Harris has an amazing voice, one which could be likened to Janis Joplin at her most thoughtful, and can convey deep emotion with the subtle embellishments strewn throughout the songs. For any lover of mid-tempo soul/blues, I cannot recommend Beyond The Pane enough.

Hello everyone,

I regret to inform that Gum Ball has been postponed and will not go ahead as planned, this coming 11-13th April 2008.

Standing at the 11th hour, caught in the bureaucracy that is our modern system, I stand firmly beside the belief that I gave all I could. I poured my heart and soul into Wollombi Gum Ball 2008 only to receive a hard flick to the nethers.

I allowed the required time frame for council proceedings, provided thorough information on responsible operational planning, safety and risk management, environmental and community initiatives, charity fundraising and awareness. Why we need such events to boost tourism and our regions creative potential, along with countless other reasons why this event has purpose. There was never any wish to tarnish the well respected community of Wollombi and the majority were in support of the venture. In the short form it became the case of a small minority of local elders going against a young bloke having a go, pushing the local boundaries with a proposal to produce something positive, a legacy of music, art and culture for the region. After a long winded process, plagued with set backs and delays, the elders have gained their respect and I have been given the push.

Whilst I respect their concerns and opinions on the event, it comes with a high level of frustration, as these objectors have taken something away from so many others for no other reason then their own selfishness. If only they could share the same respect for what this means to so many people, the incredible effort required to pull something like this together, the inspiration to stand up and have a go.

I do plan to reschedule the date to a suitable time, the indication being Spring/September 2008.

I have people’s sentiments on board and I do plan to stay focused and push through this pile of excreta, in the hope that Gum Ball can maintain its integrity and respect as a very unique and important event for our greater community to enjoy.

I will draw from the positives. With this reschedule, I can assure you we will endeavour to expand on the positives. And not only to keep the awesome festival line up and exciting programming in tact, but to ensure that it will be even more convenient and simplistic then ever, ensuring eventually, we will all have the best heavenly Gum Ball ever!

All purchased tickets are fully refundable, however they will still be valid for the next event. It�??s up to you�?�

I apologise immensely for the natural inconvenience this has created for everyone and I thank you all for your support and understanding in this challenging situation.

The tracks on Holding Pattern are nothing short of beautiful. Singing of truth, love, beauty, truth, and our natural world, Dizzygotheca have laid down the soundtrack for a film that doesn�??t yet exist. Standouts are Cocoon, which is so hauntingly touching you are almost saddened when the track draws to a close, 1000 Seas, with a distinct Bjork influence, and I (Heart) Robots, which came in at number 34 in local radio 4ZzZ�??s Hot 100 of 2007.

The packaging of Holding Pattern seems to be something special too. Hand printed on 100% recycled cardboard, and numbered, each copy is its own little masterpiece. Regrettably, I purchased the EP on iTunes, but will no doubt get a physical copy in the near future.

Josephine Polistena’s slippery vocals dances around the bassline of the title track, and shifts gears for a catchy chorus. She is both enticing the listener and warning that there’s something a bit dangerous under the surface.

Guitarist Pascal Carver couldn’t have a more appropriate name, as his wah soaked leads cut right through the mix. Rhythm section Ben Szabo on Bass and percussionist Sevan Hanimyan provide a solid foundation upon which everything else is layered. Szabo’s bass lines are innovative and fresh, providing a welcome change from the steady chugging heard in most bands.

Just A Phase and Desert Child continue the feel of the title track, opening up new doors and expanding sonic ideas that have already been flirted with. Desert Child builds into a catchy, somewhat frantic climax before a nifty guitar solo brings it back to the chorus.

The affair ends with Tell Me, a more laid back, softer song about longing, love and all the things that go along with it. It is a much more low key trach than the other three, with allusions to cool jazz, and psychodelica.

Stick With Me is a great EP and proves, undeniabely, that Luna Assassins are a band to keep your eyes and ears open for.

Duel vocals by Melissa-Jayne Wylie & Rab offer listeners a diverse palette and compliment each other perfectly. Opening track Face introduces listeners to their fusion Funk/Alt/Rock sounds. Guitarist Andy Wylie cuts through the mix, meshing well with the bombastic rhythm section of Eddy Mino & Denis Custovic. In a radical, new initiative led by AIPAH?s Principal, Jim McCrudden, along with the Head
of Composition & Music Industry Studies, Michael Chin, students are working
collaboratively on an exciting project involving SI-MI (a Melbourne-based site designed
for creatives to promote and sell their music, art, and videos online. See www.si-mi.com).

Through this hands-on course, students learn about the music industry by actively
engaging in all the processes from writing, recording and producing their original songs,
looking at aspects of marketing and publishing their music on-line for digital download,
and organizing their own events.

The final result culminates in an Official Site Launch on Thursday 3rd April at One World
Sport, Parramatta, that promises an exciting night of variety showcasing the
collaborative talents of the Music, Dance, Drama and Art streams. Students will perform
their original works for friends & family, general public and music industry
professionals (including representatives from Sony/BMG, Peer Music Publishing, APRA and
more).

The AIPAH SI-MI Site Launch will introduce the general public and industry to AIPAH?s
on-line presence, and instigate an opportunity for students to kick-start their careers
by earning an income from their original works digital downloads.

Doors open at 6:30pm, and there will be food and drinks available. All ages are welcome -
under 18?s will need to be accompanied by an adult.

Tickets can be pre-purchased at AIPAH for $10 or at the door on the night for $12.

Hey there. Um, well i guess i have finally decided to start my own myspace page to get some of the tunes i have been writing out of my head and back out into the universe. I have been playing guitar in a great band called Thirsty Merc for a few years now, and have been a very lucky member of a band called Midnight Swim for even longer. Both bands have been very busy lately, with the Merc constantly touring and The Swim boys forming a great new band called The Dead Letter Chorus…So where does this leave me? Very tired and happy but with a bunch of songs that literally no-one ever hears. So here we are…just you and me. I have nothing to hide and nothing to sell. I sold out ages ago! Bless you. Two top American musicians teaming up, and joined by a fabulous Australian cellist! Danny O’Keefe is one of the all time greats of the singer songwriter era with classics like ‘Good Time Charlie’s Got The Blues’ and ‘The Road’. As well as recording cult albums himself his songs have been recorded by everyone from Elvis to Jackson Browne, from Willie Nelson to Mel Torm.
Kristina Olsen arrived half a generation later, growing up in Flower Power San Francisco and then moving to Los Angeles, where she saw and loved Danny O’Keefe shows while working at the famed McCabe’s venue. Four albums later Kristina Olsen found Australia in the mid 90’s, and audiences loved her so much that she’s back every year since. Along the way she discovered the fabulous musician Peter Grayling, and a recent meeting with Danny O’Keefe sparked the idea for this special Australian tour, which will see all three of them on stage together, swapping O’Keefe and Olsen songs.

Eddi Reader’s rare blend of meltingly true vocals and towering romanticism combine with an astute and pragmatic nature to make her a unique and powerful figure in contemporary British music. She has effortlessly developed into one of popular music’s most thrilling and affecting performers.

Sparkadia are currently embarking upon a huge tour of Europe and the UK with American stars Jimmy Eat World. The 21-date tour precedes the release of their debut album ‘Postcards’ on May 31 through Ivy League Records.

The year 1991 was the beginning of Parker’s solo career. At the time he was remembered by aficionados of funk music as a sideman, and appreciated mainly by those in the know. More than a decade and a half later, Parker has been enjoying a blistering solo career. For the past 15 years he has been building a new funk empire, fresh and stylistically diverse. His third solo album, the groundbreaking Life on Planet Groove, recorded live in 1992, became a funk fan favourite and served as a calling card, boosting Parker’s contemporary career as a solo artist for a college-aged audience and bringing into being his catchphrase: “Two per cent jazz, 98 per cent funky stuff.” At the beginning of 2007 Parker had the chance to fulfil his dream of working with a big band. Teaming up with Grammy Award-winners the WDR Big Band, he broadcast and performed a series of live shows paying tribute to Ray Charles and putting Parker’s own funky music to a big band setting.

His list of session work is awesome (some 3,000 sessions), but some of his notable performances were with Herbie Hancock, Steely Dan, Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins and Pink Floyd. Since the mid-80’s Ritenour has been strongly influenced by Brazilian music. One of the finest guitarists on the planet, Ritenour is a must see for lovers of brilliant musicianship.

Bluesfest Double Bill CHARLIE MUSSELWHITE BAND and JOHN HAMMOND (USA)
A blues legend, it’s Charlie Musselwhite’s mix of wild country abandon seasoned by years of playing urban electric blues in Chicago that spurs the likes of Ben Harper, Tom Waits and Gov’t Mule to welcome Musselwhite onto their stages and records. That same brash, BluesRock rebel vibe was Dan Aykroyd’s inspiration for his Elwood Blues persona, and it’s what has won Musselwhite a pile of blues awards and earned the admiration and respect of his own heroes: Howlin’ Wolf, John Lee Hooker and Muddy Waters. John Lee was even the best man at Charlie’s wedding. Pulled, like the albums of R.L. Burnside and the North Mississippi Allstars, out of the storied Mississippi Delta and Hill Country, ‘DELTA HARDWARE’ is Charlie’s latest release. Jeff Duff is one of Australia’s most enigmatic, controversial and prolific performers. Following a successful decade long career in London Duffo returned to Oz in the early nineties to re-introduce his extraordinary style to the local scene. Duff is Australia’s answer to David Bowie or Iggy Pop, possessing one of the most unique voices in pop music in the country. Jeff gave a knockout performance of the classic ‘Sorrow’ in a duet with Claire Moore on the SBS RockWiz Comedy Festival special, which aired recently.
“Emma Pask is the greatest gift to Australian Jazz Vocals in the last decade”, is how James Morrison, Australia’s most awarded jazzman, describes her. Her performances are reminiscent of the classic era of jazz, when swing was top of the charts.

Bluesfest presents LEE RITENOUR (USA)
Tonight The Basement welcomes the Lee Ritenour band, featuring Patrice Rushen on keys, Will Kennedy on drums and Melvin Davis on bass.
Ever prolific, Ritenour has established himself as one of the world’s leading jazz guitarists with a series of accessible albums over three decades.
Starting at the age of 16, Ritenour played his first session with The Mama’s and the Papa’s. Two years later he was backing Tony Bennett and Lena Horne at L.A.’s Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.
Know as “Captain Fingers”, Ritenour became a sought-after session player in the mid-70’s. Starting in 1976, at the age of 24, he began his own solo career which now includes over 30 albums and collaborations.
Although heavily influenced in his early days by the relaxed styles of Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass and Barney Kessel, he now has his own distinctive sound and fluid style. His list of session work is awesome (some 3,000 sessions), but some of his notable performances were with Herbie Hancock, Steely Dan, Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins and Pink Floyd. Since the mid-80’s Ritenour has been strongly influenced by Brazilian music. One of the finest guitarists on the planet, Ritenour is a must see for lovers of brilliant musicianship.

The hottest emerging talent on the Australian music scene, Jono McNeil brings his fresh, hip nu soul sound to the basement. Already a familiar name with fans of The Roast, The Resonannce and successful FunkGroove band The Jive Express, the man quickly becoming know as “Mr Soul”, launches his debut solo album ‘Places’.

Bluesfest presents SEASICK STEVE
Where has Seasick Steve been all your life? He’s in his sixties, and yet won this year’s Mojo Best Breakthrough Act award, pushing the UK on its knees and breathing new life and hope into your iPod. On paper it is the unlikely success story of the year, but when you see it for yourself it makes perfect sense!
All the rules are now changed if one man can get on stage with a piece-of-sh*t three-string guitar, sing songs of his downtrodden hobo days in spirit-lifting fashion, and win over audiences with hipster ease (which he has done consistently and repeatedly for the last 12 months). His last album ‘Dog House Music’ (Bronzerat Records) was recorded in mono in his kitchen in Norway but has sold by the bucketload. He’s clearly got an ear for it, spending much of the Nineties recording and producing in Olympia, WA during the grunge boom, bands like Modest Mouse, Murder City Devils etc.
Born in Oakland, CA, Steve Wold left home at 14 to a lengthy freight-train-hopping and migrant-working hobo lifestyle, before eventually “settling” in Tennessee (via San Francisco, UK, Hawaii, Tennessee, Washington State and god knows where else he married his Norwegian wife 25 years ago and they’ve lived in 56 different houses). He became Seasick Steve fairly recently, so nicknamed after an ill-advised ferry journey, and it coincided neatly with a decision to deliver his own musical goods to the world, instead of just helping others deliver theirs. He released the first album by Seasick Steve & The Level Devils in 2004, and just as things started rolling along quite nicely he suffered a massive heart attack and lost his studio. No biggie, makes for a good song or two. So the ‘Dog House Music’ album was a kind of therapy, and he realised he could carry on. And so here he is, and here we are. We all love a good story and a good song, and Seasick Steve is king of the yarn, duke of the hot blues lick. It’s that pure and it’s that simple.

Bluesfest presents MICHELLE SHOCKED
Michelle Shocked is a two-time Grammy nominee who made a big impact on the music world with a trio of acclaimed releases her first three Mercury albums, ‘Short Sharp Shocked’ (1988), ‘Captain Swing’ (1989) and ‘Arkansas Traveler’ (1992). As Rolling Stone says, “A decade before Ani DiFranco emerged as this generation’s hardcore female troubadour, Michelle Shocked escaped the hills of east Texas (via Amsterdam and San Francisco) to play her revolutionary folk blues, a music that is less about politics than it is a personal declaration of independence.” Her latest record is a celebratory live album, ‘ToHeavenURide’. In the beginning, Shocked writes, “I was moved by the power of rock ‘n’ roll. And if you follow the trail from rock ‘n’ roll, it always leads you back to the blues, sweet soul music and finally to the churches and gospel music.”

ELLIOTT BROOD + DAN MANGAN (CANADA)
Elliott Brood has never been an easy outfit to describe. Since forming in late 2002, their sounds have been labeled “death country”, “blackgrass” and even “urban hillbilly”, none of which truly capture the essence or energy of the band. With Elliott Brood, the storytelling is paramount. The band presents tales from the dustier sides of life in dimly lit rooms with half empty bottles.
Rhythmic banjo-led stomps and abusive acoustic strumming are married with an old time thump to paint the scenes and characters driving the stories. Mark Sasso’s scratchy vocal delivery seems almost impossible at times ranging from whispered lullabies to nightmarish screams.
The release of their album ‘Ambassador’ in 2005 prompted an even busier touring schedule, seeing the band cross Canada six times with two trips across Europe, sharing stages with such diverse acts as Wilco, Blue Rodeo, Broken Social Scene, Do Make Say Think, Corb Lund and countless others. Elliott Brood has developed a reputation as one of the busiest and most exciting live bands in Canada. Their energetic and raucous live performances have, and continue to captivate audiences everywhere.
Sharing this Canadian double-bill is Dan Mangan. Tying together the roots of acoustic folk and subtle symphonic pop, Dan’s album ‘Postcards & Daydreaming’ is unabashedly mellow. However, it’s Mangan’s powerful, weather-beaten vocals that hint at something epic lurking in the undertones. Influenced both by songsmiths of old (Nick Drake, Woody Guthrie) and sonic innovators of late (Neutral Milk Hotel, Sigur Ros). Mangan’s “old soul” is made obvious through his lyrical ruminations on both the harmful capabilities and intrinsic beauty of human foibles. Think Kurt Vonnegut with a gravelly sweet singing voice.

On the brink of releasing his 8th studio album in 2008, diesel hits the road for a solo tour, as a warm up for an impending album tour with his band in the second quarter of 2008.
Known as a reluctant performer when it comes to talking about himself, this show has the added element where his audience plays the main part in forming his set for the night they decide what songs he’ll perform, a tailored set to suit just them.
A further twist to his previously performed solo shows is that he will perform songs with electric guitar.
On entry, each patron will be given a list of over 40 songs (ranging from Johnny Diesel & The Injectors to today including songs from some of his favourite musicians) they select 3 songs (preferably a closet fave, something they haven’t heard in a long time or never heard before). Performed in a seated venue, diesel will then formulate his set list based on these choices for the evening. On departure, the audience will be given the entire song list of choice with a personal note from diesel.
With a career that spans more than 2 decades, a library of releases, the latest including live DVD’s “The First Fifteen ‘89-’04″ (debuting top 40 week of release) and “Diesel + Strings Live at The Vanguard”, his ARIA nominated live solo acoustic album “Singled Out”, 7th studio album “Coathanger Antennae”, producermusician on Jimmy Barnes multi-platinum album “Double Happiness”, and a shelf of ARIA Awards, he’s been called “the musician’s musician”. Pat DiNizio, leader and principal songwriter for the Smithereens, returns to Australia for a solo tour. DiNizio and crew went from college rock darlings in the mid-1980’s to gold record hit makers in the ’90’s with their “11″ album, featuring top 40 songs like “A Girl Like You” and “Blues Before and After.”

The Gerard Masters Trio has been performing together since 2000 and have developed into one of Australia’s finest modern jazz groups. His eight albums in as many years have resulted in multiple Juno and Maple awards, including “Best Roots and Traditional Album (2003)”. Harry has received two Maple Blues Awards and most recently he was the recipient of The Great Canadian Blues Award (2007) from CBC National Radio. His 2007 collaboration album with famed Canadian guitarist Kevin Breit (Norah Jones Band) saw them nominated for Best Roots Recording (duo) at the Western Canada Music Awards.

PAUL GREENE ‘Distance Over Time’ CD Launch with special guest Lou Bradley
Over the past few years Paul Greene has been given the thumbs up by John Butler, The Waifs & Ani DiFranco, hi-jacked by Midnight Oil’s Rob Hirst and served as the inspiration behind Ben Harper’s ‘Diamonds On The Inside’.
His forthcoming album ‘Distance Over Time’ is a phenomenal showcase for Paul Greene’s songwriting skills, justifying the many critics who regard him as one of Australian music’s best-kept secrets.
Sydney Morning Herald’s Bernard Zuel remarked how he moves effortlessly “from rustic folk-pop to unreconstructed rocker; from herbal roots ex-surfer type to intense singer-songwriter”. “Greene’s genuine songwriting stands above all else” proclaimed the Newcastle Herald; “You could be forgiven for thinking we may have our own Jack Johnson but Greene is more than that!” exclaims the Daily Telegraph. DIG radio says, “Paul Greene is growing into one of the best Australian singer songwriters” whilst Nova called his music “refreshingly honest and as catchy as you like” before anointing him Australia’s best unsigned acoustic act in 2007.
‘Distance Over Time’ is the album poised to introduce this staunchly independent performer’s undeniable talents to the mainstream.
Supporting Paul on the night will be singer-songwriter Lou Bradley who burst on to the scene in 2007 with her captivating debut album ‘Love Someone’, which earned her rave reviews from the country’s best judges, who called her folk-influenced style a breath of fresh air, and compared her to Alison Krauss. Lou had won the inaugural John Butler’s Seed grant in 2005, and her talent was confirmed with a final 5 nomination at the 2007 ARIA Awards.

There’s something prematurely mythic about The Flood. Their name swirls with the gravity of the Old Testament and the everyday calamity of life on the land: a force of nature, and a story thick with sediments of truth and fable.
Rock’n'roll has its own tributary from this source, of course. Dylan, the Band, Creedence, Neil Young, Gram Parsons and John Prine drank from the stream that fuelled the Dingoes, Don Walker, Paul Kelly and the scores of waterholes between Sydney and Tamworth that nourished the Flood these past ten years. This band, in turn, has carved its own legend. Nashville troubadour Kevin Welch said his brief stint out front was “like getting behind the wheel of a Formula One race car”.

The event runs from the 14th, 15th and 16th of March throughout Katoomba in the Blue Mountains, 1.5 hours from central Sydney along the M4 and the Great Western Highway.

KAYA’s unique music draws on such influences as jazz, soul, blues, pop, folk and contemporary sound-scape with all band members coming from musicperforming arts courses at UWS. Together, they create urban music that is both lyrically and melodically compelling - if not a little cheeky and sensuous as well. In concert, KAYA performs a capella in 4-part harmony and also with instruments. Chris Irvine (PhoniesDeependers) is a regular feature with them at live shows, he is a multi-instrumentalist Beat Boxer and Drummer and loves to drop FAT beats over their luscious vocals. Their dynamic live performances are mainly of original songs including ‘Don’t want to go home’, ‘Somebody’s Lyin’ and ‘Move me’, ‘Too Much Talk’ and ‘Mr Man’ but also add innovative versions of songs they have arranged such as ‘Zebra’ by John Butler Trio, ‘Big Yellow Taxi’ by Joni Mitchell and a few Bob Marley favourites as well as some mad funky jamming!

When I first heard this band I thought �??There�??s something special going on here�??. After listening to their debut, I am certain of it. The Third Cycle are heavy enough to satisfy the rockers, yet easily accessible. The vocal palette of Jess Donnellan lures the listener in, while the rhythm section, bassist Clint Ossington and Drummer JB not only provide a steady and versatile backbone, but also pummel you into submission if you put up too much resistance. The riffs and fills of guitarist Matt Dobson cut through the mix like a surgeons blade, yet never with excessive force. Like a surgeon, he knows just the right amount of pressure to apply so as to not destroy surrounding tissue.

In other news, some of you may have noticed that we have had an add placed in The Drum Media for the past three weeks. The lovely editorial staff at Drum have also included a small write up on next week’s show on page 28 (News In Brief).

Here is a sneak at what is in store in an upcoming web only installment of Scout!

*Not enough water - plus it was 4 bucks a bottle!
*Not enough decent food.
*The toilets weren’t level and felt like they were going to tip at any second.
*Violent security guards - if you saw the guard doing the flying ninja kick at the dude who jumped the fence you’d know what i mean.
*Complete lack of signage showing where to line up and where the entrance was.
*We spent over and hour and a half just trying to get in the fucken gate.
*Not enough bins - and I’m pretty sure there weren’t any recycling bins either.
*10 bucks a bourbon = FAIL.
*All the walkways got bottlenecked every time a band finished - don’t even talk about when the ambulances had to come through…
*No timetables available.
*All the bands who pulled out and made the sets run all out of whack meant that I only got to see 2 bands all day. NOT GOOD ENOUGH YOU PROMOTING CUNT. I hope all bands refuse to work with you in the future because it’s fairly obvious that you FAIL AT LIFE.
*Broken glass was EVERYWHERE outside the venue, and in some cases inside too. Get some bins fuckers!

I hope there are no more Soundwave festivals. Bring back the days of having people give a shit about their crowds and organising a decent fucking festival. And stop mixing metal and emo, it just causes problems. Anyone remember any problems at Metal for the Brain? No, that’s because there weren’t any. Gah…

Well, it didn’t totally suck… The line up was ok, but not fantastic for the price of the tickets. And i didn’t know what stage was what and there were no maps or people who could help me figure it out. Though i wasn’t drinking, friends who were said they had run out of spirits at all bars before 3pm, and were out of water, and everything but light beer by about 5. Apparently it was the same last year…commonsense would probably tell you that if they ran out last year, maybe they should have kept more stock on hand this time around…and who drinks XXXX beer anyway? that was silly. was it on special or something? …on a lighter note, the atmosphere was good xoxo

butt they needed something to cover the ground to prevent dirt from coming up, because the dust was amazing and purely disgusting.. i don’t know if you have ever eaten dirt but its not nice.
um i heard people were lining up for like 3 hours so more than one entry would have been good. also they needed more food stalls the wait for food was amazingly long

if that makes sense ,.. also shade would have been good..

Darren�??s professional music career spans three continents, starting as the lead singer for angry rock outfit Mary Jane in Johannesburg. He decided to make music his life on the day he finished high school when his father asked him what he was going to study at university. Darren made the choice then and has never looked back. After immigrating to Australia, Darren formed the band FRANK. They had immediate success on the Sydney scene getting radio play on mainstream commercial and community radio stations and recording three EP�??s. It was during this time that Darren established himself as an accomplished songwriter. It was also during this period that Darren met and collaborated with many talented musicians from the local scene. Darren has fostered an awesome network of professional, hardworking session and live musicians and this helped him to launch his solo career.

Recently, Darren signed with independent label MPI in Los Angeles and he has spent a year there recording tracks for his upcoming debut solo EP. He has been privileged to record with Patrick Caccia (Drums for Eric Sardinas and percussion on a track for Steve Via’s latest live dvd), Joey Heredia (Stevie wonder, Carole King, Frank Gambale), Oscar Cartaya (Jennifer Lopez), Grecco Burato (Pink, Earth Wind and Fire, Anastacia) in LA and more recently Joe Hamill (Kate DeAraugo), Dario Bortolin (Jimmy Barnes) and Steve Fuller (Anthony Snape). Darren’s latest work has been mixed by L.A based engineer, Richard Oliver Furch for Tribase Productions with credits that include Macy Gray, Outkast, Michael Stipe, Christina Aguilera, Nick Lachey and Robert Plant, to name a few.

Darren Paul is the ultimate example of the hard working muso. His positive attitude is infectious to those around him. He lives the life of a man who knows what he wants and it shows. This debut solo EP is definitely the start of new adventures.

Along the way, Amy was fortunate enough to perform with varied artists, including award-winning electro act ON, and internationally renowned artist and producer Groove Terminator, which saw her perform to sell-out crowds as the support act for Moby on his Australian tour.

In 2003, Amy recruited three like-minded individuals to form a new musical collective known as Amy Vee & The Virtues. Gary, Russell and Mat were the perfect complement to Amy�??s sweet subversive music, and proved so on the band�??s first EP, titled �??quintessence�??, described by Australian Musician�??s Media as �??truly magical�?� definitely worth having on your play list�??. The track �??Where You Are�?? was picked up by NovaFM in Sydney and Melbourne and the band became one of the station�??s feature artists. It was also featured on Triple J�??s Home & Hosed program. The music video for One Hand has been aired on national television and was also featured at the Planet Ant Independent Film Festival in Detroit.

In 2004, the band were recognised by the Australian music industry when they took out the Expose Yourself competition, allowing them to record with reputable LA producer Roger Sommers (Alanis Morrissette, kd Lang, Metallica).

The band�??s recordings were further recognised when they were awarded Artist of the Year at the 2005 MUSICOZ awards, Australia�??s largest awards for unsigned artists. The award ceremony aired on national free-to-air television and the recording of the band�??s live performance on the night has featured on FOXTELs Aurora channel countless times since.

The debut LP from Amy Vee & The Virtues is �??Archetype�??. The album was recorded at Love Hz Studios in Leichardt and marks the beginning of a new leg of the Virtues�?? voyage.

These songs were recorded at the age of only 15. Elle has been performing since the age of 8 and has had many a lead role in school musicals including the movie The Chronicles of Narnia(The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe.) Elle` has just currently returned from the Music Ozz Awards in Sydney were she won the international artist award. Elle has recently relocated from NZ to Sydney to collaborate with producers and start recording more music.

We have all sorts of rock, punk, r&b and pop. And we also are going to be starting two brand new projects, which are set to completely wow anyone who sees them. These will be aired shortly, right here on scouttv.com.au

So despite the long hours, crazy travel time and running around, shoot day is always something special. Seeing bands from totally different backgrounds all sitting around waiting for their call is something great, as it goes to show that in the tumultuous ocean that is the music world, independent artists should stick together and support one another. There is no ego and cattiness on the Scout set!

Dead Inside the Chrysalis�??s �??Who Killed Entertainment?�?? is the latest release from the cyber-punk quartet. This collection is jam packed with goodies, both old, and new, and a little different. With four new tracks, the re-release of two E.P�??s and a variety of remixes of their older works, DITC shows their audience how their music has evolved and changed throughout the course of their career.

The new songs, Who Killed Entertainment?, Body of Control, Attack The Pop Charts!!! and The Addicted 64, sound like a natural progression from their last effort, The Class of 2099. Catchy, slightly camp and riddled with electronic treatments, yet maintaining a rock/punk sensibility, these four tracks are a great teaser for their new upcoming LP.

The re-issued E.Psare nostalgic for those of you who have been around for the past few years, and it’s nice to have these tracks available again.

With clear influences from the 1980�??s, video games, technology and b-grade films; DITC is reminiscent of classics such as Devo and Sigue Sigue Sputnik and could just be the new alternative electro-dance music that our generation is calling for.

Level 28 was originated in Sydney in 2002 when 2 bands first met together, the Evil Mice (Hidebu as bass, Ray as guitar, Taka as drummer, Yukako as keyboard) and the Athena (Yuki as drums, UG as vocal). Then they decided to create a new band for the local band competition held soon after. In the competition, the resultant Level 28 was such a success, that they decided to stick together for good. In 2003, the initial drummer Taka left the band and Yuki became the official member of Level 28. In July of 2003, George joined the band as supporting guitarist for a band competition in the same year. Level 28 won the 2nd runner up and the most popular award from the competition while George was invited to become the 5th official member. The band has played in various competitions and shows in Sydney such as Cheers de Night (Japsphere part 1) & Summer Salt Kick (Japsphere part 2), Fing Tau Yuen Live, Kick Up The Dust 2002 and 2003, Amplifire, Fuse and various places like Gaelic Club at Surry Hills, Plan B at Kings Cross, Darling Harbour, Bar Broadway, Round House and Science Theatre at UNSW etc. The band also performed their own concert on the 1st Apr 2005 at Metro in Sydney. And their second own concert in the 3rd of December 2005 at Gaelic club in Sydney. Besides, perfoming in live, the band also arranged theme song for animation soon to be broadcasted in Japan. Currently, they are recording a full demo album which will pave the way as their ever 1st official album to be released “Set me free”.

The JAYWALKER story began with a chance meeting between Jason Hicks (lead vocals, guitars) and Glenn Phipps (bass) where they discovered their mutual passion for music. Jason and Glenn then went in search of accomplished musicians to complete and solidify the JAYWALKER line up. This successful discovery resulted in Jeff Hall (keys, guitars, backup vocals), Bob Allen (lead guitarist, backup vocals) and James Dennett (drums). These five guys, all established in their own right created the ideal musical combination

With their music ranging from straight ahead rock and pop epics, to heartfelt ballads, JAYWALKER writes imaginative and thought provoking songs creating a unique blend of groove based rock. In the short life of JAYWALKER, they have already supported the likes of Xavier Rudd, Sarah Mcleod and Killing Heidi. The guys recorded their first six track, self titled EP, which sold over 500 copies in a matter of months. Their latest single �??You Live, You Learn�?? was released in July 07 to a sold out show at The Vanguard, Sydney. The song itself showcases the bands ability to surround a well phrased lyric and melody with a thumping rhythm section, broadening their fan base and gaining a greater appreciation for their original music.

Fast forward to today and The Bleed have released their full length album ‘Melee’, an entirely self produced album bristling with 12 rock gems. Likened to Buzz Cocks, Johnny Thunders, Jebbediah and You Am I, The Bleed’s take on 70’s punk fueled rock with a distinct Aussie flare is set to raise a few eyebrows.

Since the 2007 debut EP release, Give Myself, Mik Morley has established himself as one of Australia�??s premier up and coming independent singer-songwriters. Following the success of the debut release, which has already drawn in masses of support from fans of all ages, Mik Morley launches a new chapter in his solo song writing career, with the release of his anticipated second studio release, Wanting More.

Wanting More is a change of direction, and a step forward for the young songwriter, containing a collection of powerful pop rock songs that are easy to relate to. Mimicking the popular themes of love, life, loss and regret, but delivering them in a positive and upbeat way. During the writing stages of Wanting More, Mik resisted the urge to maintain the moody and contemporary feel which he delivered with Give Myself, and went back to the basics of the song writing, delivering it in a powerful and energetic way for our generation.

�??My first love of music was the classic rock from the 80�??s�?? explains Mik, who was formally the guitarist for the rock band Lik-Wid for 7 years, before leaving to pursue his solo song writing career. �??I have always wanted to maintain two simple elements in all my songs, melody and groove, what I�??ve always loved about 80�??s rock�??.

Mik Morley may have more of a hard-rock background, but this isn�??t that kind of music. It still reflects the parallels between energy and drive, to soul and mood, but this is music for everyone. His quickly building song writing success can be mainly attributed to his broad and ever-growing international fan based.

Throughout Mik�??s song writing career to date, he has written songs that have picked up by Major US Labels to be used by top platinum selling artists, featured in independent and major feature films, television, commercials and international compilations. Scout is pleased to be working with The Gum Ball Festival, held in the Hunter Valley from Friday 11th to Sunday 13th April 2008. The latest addition to the line up includes Melbourne based rockers The Vasco Era, folk jammers Custom Kings (VIC), Australian country rock kings The Re-Mains, Botanics, Radiophobia, and The Evening Son.

The band the whole country is talking about, “MOVE TREES” is a must see. It has stunned, challenged and moved audiences with its powerful brand of music described by NEW YORK journalist Justin Defreece as “ORGANIC ANARCHY”. Steve Balbi’s voice has tones of Bono and Bowie with an ability to take the listener on a believable journey of love and positivity with an irreverent delivery. The songs are world class, this band is truly WONDERFUL.

Tropfest’s best films will be projected on the big screen transferring The Vanguard into a mini cinema.

When she was six years old, still in Cyprus, Nasia knew she wanted to be a singer. She’d put on makeup and dress up in her mother’s stage costumes and put on a show for the neighbourhood, belly dancing and singing for them. She gathered all the kids in the village and cast them in her musical and with a megaphone, Nasia directed and of course, was the star “I was a six year old megolamaniac”, she recalls.

At the age of 7, Nasia and her parents migrated to Australia. First stop Melbourne where Nasia went to school. Attending the Language Centre to learn English, she remembers teaching the other kids all the rude Greek words, “we got in a lot of trouble for that” she recollects.

Her love of music continued and she found herself hooked on MTV, singing and dancing and imitating all her favourite artists which included Gloria Estefan, Janet Jackson, Paula Abdul and Madonna. For her, singing was always associated with the stage and dancing and acting.

At the age of ten, Nasia’s parents split and this had a lasting impact on how she viewed the world “from an early age I knew what it meant to be happy and I could see that they weren’t, this helped me accept my parents decision”.

Nasia and her mother moved to Sydney where her mother went back to work as a singer in Greek club restaurants. From there it was an itinerant lifestyle, moving from school to school. However, for Nasia, it was an exciting time as it was at the peak of her mother’s career, who was well known in the Greek community. Nasia got to attend all the rehearsals and watch every show. She was there to see all the behind the scenes dramas “I saw the hard work and what it actually takes to survive in an entertainment industry and how competitive it is,but I fell in love with it and it instilled a big desire in me to succeed in this world”.

“My mum taught me to stand strong, to believe in myself and have faith in my abilities. She taught me to have the confidence to make the kind of choices that would make me feel proud. The entertainment industry is tough. You have to know who you are and be strong and hold onto that”.

Nasia wrote her first original song when she was about 5 “It was just a verse and chorus, it was about a butterfly coloured silvery- blue and I named the song that. She was so beautiful she made me want to write a song for her. I rehearsed a dance routine and performed it all for my family. Chasing butterflies was a big pastime for me”.

At 15 and after settling in Sydney, Nasia turned from writing poems to lyrics for songs. She joined the school band, formed jam sessions at lunchtimes and had so much fun through her love of music that she started writing original songs and performing in and out of school. She landed a spot as a dancer in a Brazilian extravaganza which toured internationally and studied performing arts at the well known “Brent Street Studios”. This opened the doors to musical theatre and she landed a role in the stage production “Bye Bye Birdie” at the Newtown Theatre.

She spent all her spare time gigging, singing and dancing, even taking in jobs as a wedding singer.

“I soon got fed up with the whole wedding singer thing and so I joined some local club competitions. The very first time, there appeared to be something wrong with the mic and no one could hear me. I felt totally helpless. So I decided to make the best of it and without the mic working, the best I could do was dance. The audience got into it and it was fun. After the competition, I felt upset at the debacle because I hadnt had the chance to do my best as a singer. The judges were sitting there with this cold look on their face and I thought its like a thing at school so I hated it but it was also great because through this gig, I eventually met my manager. A young man named Joe was in the audience and he saw that I was on the verge of tears so he came up and made me laugh. He said, you ‘know what, youve got talent and because I like you Im going to get you to meet my sister. She’s a music manager”.

“He turned out to be on the level and thats how I met my manager. She gave me good advice and I went away for about a year focusing on developing my songs and recording demos and trying different working relationships. Then I came back to her and the timing was good. We decided to work together”.

“My manager was so supportive of what I was trying to do. She inspired me to focus on the music and helped expand my vision and after working with each other for a while, I decided to sign to her label, GoSet Music”.

Although Nasia has written a swag of songs for her album, she has decided to release a cover of Lynsey de Pauls 70s hit, Sugar Me as her first single.

“I fell in love with the song in Cyprus and when I saw the faces of those young girls bopping to the track with me, I liked the way it brought a smile to their faces. It affected me and I wanted to sing the song and put it back out there”.
“Brian Canham produced the track. He’s the lead singer from Pseudo Echo. I loved the 80s sounds he brought to the table. He helped get the direction right for the record for me”.

“I am excited about the single and I hope the song will find its audience and I get to go on and record the rest of my album and go out there and take it to the people”.
