Just wanted to let you know that I'm taking a much needed vacation and most likely won't be around to blog, answer email or check Twitter. I won't be gone long- probably about a week- but I didn't want you to see me stop posting and emailing and think I got abducted by aliens or something.

I'll probably schedule some random picture spam to go up while I'm not around just so it's not so lonely here.

And before I leave, I wanted to put up another picture I've been wanting to post for months!

Index: Chanel Kaleidoscope
Middle: BB Couture For Nails Blind Love
Ring: Chanel Gold Fiction
Pinkie: Sephora by OPI Charge It!

As you can see, Charge It! and Gold Fiction are not as similar as I had hoped- the texture/finish and application were very similar but the shades are pretty far off.

However, Kaleidoscope and Blind Love are near-exact duplicates. There is very little difference between these two polishes. I even did a wear test- alternating the shades on each finger and wearing it for a day- and I couldn't tell the difference. The subtle differences between them are that Kaleidoscope is ever so slightly more sparkly and Blind Love has just a touch more of a yellowy-green tint. Not enough for me to even notice when wearing them both at the same time.

Kaleidoscope is long gone, but as far as I'm aware, Blind Love is sticking around for a long time. And about one quarter the price.... Wears better, too.

My first Barry M polishes!

Another post I have been meaning to do for a long time!

Nail-blogging British friend of mine Helen surprised me on my birthday with a package that included some awesome Barry M polishes. This is a light emerald shade with tons of shimmer. It's in between frost and metallic. Very shiny, kind of reflective and sparkly at the same time. It applied so smoothly, with only a hint of visible brushstroke.

299 Racing Green. A rich dark green with blue overlay... It's sort of duochrome, but you can see both colors clearly all the time. It's kind of like green underneath and blue on top! Is it green shimmer in a blue jelly base? Such a cool polish. It reminds me of Bloom Bianca, but this seems darker. Very similar feeling to the two polishes- aquatic, mermaidy, rich and botanical. Like leafy dark green seaweed in deep blue water!

I love these polishes a lot! I don't know if I can even get Barry M here- I've heard they have a website you can order from, but I've also heard stories of bad customer service when ordering from them, so I won't post the link. However, if you are in the UK, these are probably readily available to you, so go check out these gorgeous greens!

Ulta Professional Green With Envy

Ulta Professional Green With Envy

This is so gorgeous, I don't even know what to say about it. It's too nice. It's too perfect.

It's a very dark blackened yellow-toned green shimmer. As much as I love green, I'm really very disappointed with all of these strongly blue-toned greens that have come out recently. I feel like they lack a certain richness... Like they're watered down green. This particular polish does have a slight blue undercurrent, but it's yellow enough to make me happy.

The first green polish I ever owned was a little like this. Super dark, a little yellow toned. I still have it, even though it's half empty and I'm too scared to use it for fear of somehow ruining it or finishing it. Maybe that's where my love of blackened yellow-toned greens comes from. And then when Zulu came along? Heaven. Bonus points to anyone who knows what that first dark green polish is... Scrangie trivia! Hahahahaha!

Anyway... Ulta Green with Envy. I do have two complaints about it. First, the name. Green With Envy? Are you kidding me?! You couldn't come up with anything better than that? That's one of my peeves. Every green polish being named Green With Envy or Envy or something related to that phrase, and every red polish with glitter being named Ruby Slippers or some variation. Creativity... [Do you need it?] [You can have this.]

My second complaint is the formula. It was kind of sheer and maybe a little watery. I needed to use three coats. I hate it when companies slap the word 'professional' on polish. Like Sinful... yeah... no. Professional my ass. Okay, back to the Ulta polish. The brush was a little strange shaped and the vanity cap was hard to remove as well. So this polish isn't entirely perfect, but the color is definitely worth any trouble I may encounter in the formula or brush.

I hope Ulta keeps making cool polishes like this. There were some other cool looking blackened colors on the display, but they looked *too* black so I didn't grab 'em. The only other Ulta polishes I own are glitters, which I also love, but they were limited edition Christmas type things. Maybe I'll post those one day!

Random Jessica Polishes

I have a confession. I have pictures of four new fall/winter collections from various companies open in my photo software waiting to be edited, but they bore me to death and I don't even feel like posting them. They've been sitting there for weeks.... Every time I go to finish cropping and watermarking them I think I fall asleep.... zzzzzzz....

So, instead, here are a few of the awesome Jessica polishes I ordered a couple weeks ago.

Like I've mentioned before, Jessica is a new brand to me. I never used them before last year's holiday mini collection (which is beyond gorgeous) and every time I see them at Target it's just a bunch of pinks and reds.... So when I was poring over their website, clicking on every single polish name and looking at their pictures, I was totally shocked and excited to see a good variety of blues and "interesting" colors! I ordered a bunch and I've been indecisively filling and emptying another shopping cart ever since...

Enough babbling. Pic time.

Casablanca. A sheer-ish black base with pink/blue/teal duochrome shimmer. This has a ton of duochrome in the bottle, but the effect is more subtle on the nail. It needs bright sunlight to be visible, but it also shows up in sunset light quite well. It reminds me of one of those sweet black/duochrome shimmer Nicoles, but I can't remember which one. Blues In The Night perhaps?

Glamorous Gladiator. A warm brown-bronzy shimmer with a splash of opal flakes. Jessica has a flaky polish! I had no idea. This reminds me a bit of OPI Shim-Merry Chic, but less "barflike" (as I've heard it called, lol!!)- it's richer, more saturated, a little deeper and bronzier. Not as many flakes and no glitter, but still a very strong shimmery base.

Grecian Touch. I love this type of color. Vampy colors that are nearly black, but have a glint of color that appears to be glowing like coals... Lit from within. That's what it looks like. This one is a plum-bronze-burgundy duochrome. Subtle duochrome, the color shift is most obvious in bright sunlight. Dark around the edges and glowing in the center.

Midnight Moonlight. Medium blue shimmer with subtle green and purple duochrome. I think this is my new favorite blue. In the bottle this has an insane amount of duochrome, but the effect is much more subtle on the nail. In the second picture you can see a little of the green and purple duochrome. Purple at the tips of the nails and green in the center. Have I mentioned yet that Jessica's bottle pictures are the best? Extremely helpful when picking out polishes. Look at their picture of this one.

Solar Eclipse. Super deep blue creme with a hint of purple. In the bottle, this one looks a lot more violet, but on the nail it's mostly a rich dark blue with just a tiny drop of purple. I've been wearing this on my toes for nearly three weeks topped with a bit of Orly Prisma Gloss in Silver and it looks stunning. It's super dark but not black. A lot of dark blue cremes end up looking black or inky but this one retains its blue-ness.

Venus Was Her Name. Deep dusty charcoal grey base with vibrant purple shimmer. This is super unique. I don't have another polish like this. It looks dusty. Dusty and color shifty. In some angles/lights it looks grey, but when the light touches the surface, the electric purple shimmer lights up the deep base and it just looks soooooo cooooool. Freakin' weird. Weird and awesome.

The formula on them is not the greatest, but it's not horrible. Just inconsistent mostly. I find them a little hard to control- some are kind of thick, some are normal, some are thin, but the brush is kinda soft and doesn't make a perfect U shape like other brushes. They also take quite a while to dry. Not so long that it deters me from wearing them, but long enough that I can't put my shoes on a half an hour after application. I definitely recommend a quick-dry topcoat and drying drops with these. Every little bit helps! Also, letting them dry for two minutes between coats helps speed up the process as well, but that requires patience, and... well... Sometimes I don't have a whole lot of that when I'm painting my nails!

The thing about ordering on the Jessica website is that it's a little difficult to find the 'good' pictures. When you click on the custom color section from the homepage, you get the useless color dots and then you have to click ORDER to see the bottle picture. BUT, if you click 'Custom Colors' on the bottom of the order/add to cart page, it brings you to the list with the good pictures that you can click to enlarge.

And here I am again, slowly filling another Jessica cart and then changing my mind... Do any of you guys have Pink Diamonds, Greta, Bette, Bedazzler, Garnet Glaze, Queen Bee or Mystery? A couple kind of look like glitter in the pictures but doing a search for 'glitter' doesn't return them as results. Two of them look like cool duochromes too, but it's hard to tell. Maybe I should just get them. Hmm... Decisions, decisions....

Happy Birthday, Illamasqua!

Two of my favorite British things turned a little older this week.... Yesterday it was Gavin, today it's Illamasqua!

Illamasqua turns one year old today. I know that a lot of people are using fake nails as part of their costumes, and I recently received some new styles of press-on artificial nails from Fing'rs to try. Some of these styles would be great for Halloween (or just every day)!

Here's the 31388 style and the 31194 style.

31388 is a sheer nude base with a hot pink french tip and a black diagonal grid design. They're inspired by International Recording Artist Mylin, who I'll admit I've never heard of, but she looks kinda like Jackie Warner. I think these would go great with an 80's/90's Prom Queen costume!

The 31194 style is a sheer nude base with white french tip and black polka dots. Very retro-50's looking, maybe these would go well with a retro glamour girl costume. I really wanted to wear these. Boo. They're so cute.

As much as I was looking forward to putting these on to review, I couldn't. To be completely honest, these are too short for me to even wear. As I was sizing the tips and getting ready to apply, I realized that these nails only covered about 3/4 of my nail bed. I would literally have to cut off my fingertips to wear these... so, sadly, I can't show pictures of these on my nails. When they say short, THEY MEAN IT! Hahahaha. I have long nail beds with fairly 'skinny' nails so many press-on nails don't fit me exactly right. I think these are better suited for someone with naturally shorter nail beds and wider nails.

However, one of the styles just barely fit my fingers!

Style 31269. A sheer nude base with deep blue metallic tips. Really cool looking. The tip is kinda glowy and reflective. Would make a good polish color. I wonder if I have a polish that matches this color? Hmm.

Here's how they look on me:

Pretend that you don't see my middle and pinkie nails sticking up over the top of the fakes. I had to file my nails down as far as they would go without bleeding to wear these, but my pinkie and middle were still just a bit too long.

I think they look pretty good, if not a little too wide for my nail beds. I can handle a french manicure when the tip is a fun color, and this blue is really fun. You can see in the flash picture that it's very reflective. It always has a section where the light is hitting the tip and there's a lighter stripe. It moves as you move your hands. Really fascinating!

I used the included glue to apply these, but they also come with stick-on tabs. The tabs are great if you only want to wear these for the night, as they remove *very* easily with warm water. The glue will give you a week of wear if you wanted to keep them on for a while.

For some tips on application, check out my older press-on nail reviews! But really, the two things you really need to know are:

Don't use too much glue. Just a little on the center of your natural nail. Otherwise the glue will get EVERYWHERE and you'll glue your hands to things unintentionally. Not like I'd know... *cough cough*

Press down hard! If you release the nail before the glue is dry or your pressure is uneven, this can cause air bubbles. Air bubbles not only look obvious with a sheer base nail like this, but they can collect moisture and condensation which can lead to some nasty things growing under your nail.

Other than that, these are fun and easy to use. A quick way to change your nails for an event. Best suited for people with shorter nail beds. I myself prefer a much longer nail, but I've heard from many people when I do my fake nail reviews that a short length is preferred for them. So, your mileage may vary!

Lip balm?

Okay, this is totally random but I figured you guys would have some great suggestions.

Recommend me a lip balm!

I normally like My Lip Stuff but I'm wanting something thicker or more substantial.

So, what's your favorite lip balm everyone?

EDIT: Holy crap, you guys ROCK!! While the hunt for these polishes was not the least bit pleasant, the reward was worth the ordeal.

I didn't pick up all the shades- I left the cremes behind. I'm more interested in glitter, but there was a yellow creme and a light teal creme that looked pretty good, I may go back and get them at some point.

Here's what I got from Hard Candy Just Nails:

Breakup. A clear-ish base with very large particle opalescent hexagonal glitter. I say that the base is clear-ish because it's speckled with little shimmer particles, smaller than glitter but large enough to make the base a little milky and sparkly. On me, mostly the orange-yellow-red side of the opal glitter shows. In the bottle it has a blue-purple-green side that I just adore and wish it showed more on me. This might be best as a topcoat because it's not the most opaque glitter in the world.

Date Night. Light medium warm pink glitter. Remember when I was posting about the new Zoya UltraGlitters and I said that all the pink glitters on the market were the same color? They're this color. This is pretty, don't get me wrong, but I wish the shade was more unique.

Envy. Vampy blue-green shimmer. This is the color I used for my Depression Awareness ribbon manicure- you didn't forget that it's still Depression Awareness Month, did you? This is a gorgeous color, blackened and still shimmery. It does look mostly black indoors and in sunlight the shimmer catches the light and it's just really pretty to look at. I wish it was a little less blue-based and a touch more yellow-toned. Lots of blue-greens out there lately.

Hot Pants. Ick. I mean.... Murky mauve-pink sheer base with large holo hex glitter and small holo round glitter. This is a really weak version of China Glaze Carnival Lights or Nubar Sugar or something. I do like the look of sheer colored base with hexagonal holo glitter, I just wish the base color wasn't so muddy and ew. It looks terrible on me. It should have been pinker or brighter, this base shade looks kind of lifeless to me. Works great as a topcoat, though.

Lava. HOTNESS. Bright red shimmer base with gold-orange iridescent metallic flecks. It's not really glitter... More like tiny little broken flakes. I love this. A lot. I've been a red-hater for a long time (to me it's boring, uninspired and overdone) and within the past year my taste has changed so much. Now I'm craving bright reds like this. But enough about me... Lava has a very iridescent, almost duochrome look to it. It flickers and changes in the light, like it's filled with little glowing embers or tiny flames. Lots of red, orange and gold flakes.

Mr. Right. Vampy dark blue shimmer. Whoa mama. Blue velvet. Gorgeous. Probably not the least bit unique, but still... very pretty to look at, isn't it? Like Envy, it does look mostly black with a hint of blue shimmer indoors, but outside when the sun catches it just right... perfection.

Mr. Wrong. If this is wrong, I don't wanna be right. It's a steel blue, grey, silver, gold and taupe metal flake fusion. This is probably the coolest polish in the whole line. Gahhh, it's so awesome!! It's a bunch of tiny little flecks of metallic shimmer- not really glitter like in Date Night or Sweet P. The particles are very thin and light. The overall effect is mesmerizing.

Sweet P. Cause everyone needs a mother.... Er, sorry. I hate that song. But I do like it when polish names make me think of music. Aaaaaaaanyway, Sweet P is a pea-soup glitter. Okay, it's not as murky-swampy as pea soup, it's more like fresh peas. Bright springy green glitter. A little muted. Kind of a retro-70's avocado refrigerator look. Or like the paint on one of those carnival rides. I'm digging it. Green, glitter, what's not to love? It's not as bright or complex as NYX Lime Sparkle, though.

The formula on these was okay. A little thick on a few, sort of watery on the others. Kinda sheer. Took a long time to dry. Not horrible, but it's not going to win any awards. I did three coats in all these pictures and they needed all three. Maybe Lava and Mr. Right could get away with two. Also worth noting: these are mini sized. .35 fluid ounces. Standard polish size is .5 fluid ounces. These also come with little plastic rings that fall off easily, do not try to pick up the bottle by the rings. The old Hard Candy jelly rings stayed on much better.

I have a few thoughts on these. One, I'm happy to see Hard Candy back with interesting colors, but I'm also a little disappointed that they're not as cool as they used to be. There's still hope- these colors aren't boring, but they're not the edgy, unique shades Hard Candy was known for.

Second, I'm kinda irked that I have to go to Wal-Mart to get these. It's kind of like shopping at the circus. Stuff hanging off of shelves in narrow, dirty, dimly lit aisles, nail polish covering the floor and all displays within a ten foot radius, dozens of unsupervised children running around screaming... (Sorry, Wal-Mart lovers, I just can't do it!) I also feel that being sold only at Wal-Mart cheapens the already devalued image of Hard Candy. The Hard Candy line really went downhill in the last few years, offering chalky makeup in standard shades and four boring polish colors. I'd love to see this brand restored to its former self. I still have my first two Hard Candy lipsticks- Piglet and Skitzo- even though they are totally rancid and unwearable, as a relic of good days gone by.

Third, what's up with the price?? $5.00 for a mini? From Wal-Mart? You've got to be kidding me. I guess I'm just so used to paying $4.48 for OPI and $3.20 for China Glaze, which are full-sized AND pro/salon brands (not drugstore brands). I have nothing against drugstore polish at all, but I do think $5.00 for .35fl oz of Wal-Mart polish is a little steep. Hard Candy, you're no longer a high-end brand, you don't need the prestige price tag.

But... overall... I really like most of the colors I got, I would actually wear almost all of them and I'm happy that they're at least available to everyone who wants them. The makeup line looked kinda cool, if I see some good reviews I might actually venture back to that place to try some of it.

A few more of the China Glaze glitters

I don't have them all yet, but here are a few more of the new China Glaze 'Specialty Collection' glitters... This is kind of a medium blue-green/teal/aqua jelly base with lots of holographic glitter. I included a picture of it blurred to show just how sparkly the glitter in this is. For some reason, the blurrier the picture, the better the glitter sparkle shows! Anyway, Atlantis is my favorite so far. I love it. Super-sparkly silver holographic glitter. This one has some larger and smaller particles blended together. The effect is spectacular in the sunlight, even my blurred picture doesn't show just how sparkly it really is.

Like the others, these have a smooth formula that applies easily and dries in a reasonable amount of time. Not fast, but not as slow as the other China Glaze ones I've had trouble with before. These pictures are three coats. The glitter in these is definitely dense enough to be worn alone, but will also work as a glitter topcoat. These are a little gritty and really do need a coat of Seche Vite or other thick topcoat to make them smooth and glossy. Two coats of topcoat would be even nicer, but not necessary.

Still in love with all these new China Glaze glitters.... Will post more when I pick up the rest of them!

MOTD

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; It's been really difficult to stay on top of my emails lately. I have emails over a month old that are still waiting to be answered. I'm having a lot of trouble concentrating, remembering things and flat out finding time to sit and write coherent sentences. Please be patient with me, I am working through my messages.

Also, I am working on a Frequently Asked Questions post to cover some of the more popular questions I receive, such as "Are your nails real?" (Yes, they are.) "What topcoat/basecoat do you use?" "How do you keep from painting on your cuticles?" "Where can I buy ___ brand of polish?" and so on... That should really help me answer questions more quickly.

There's so much I want to say and do and post and it's really a lot for one person to keep up with every day- but I try my best!

I really, really appreciate all your emails. I love that you like me enough to visit my blog and want to talk to me! Cause I like you guys too. Thank you. <3

Need Zoya swatches?

I've noticed a lot of searches for Zoya swatches on here for the past few hours... I took these pictures probably 4 or 5 months ago when they *were* new and never got a chance to post them... But still... they're cool. And new-ish.

You all know that Fing'rs makes my favorite nail decals. You know, the ones with the little skulls and bats? The ones I'm wearing all the time? Well, now they have even more cool designs... take a look!

These are from Fing'rs EDGE... This is the Royal Punk Nail Art package. Take a look full size! We've got hearts, skulls, skulls with hearts, hearts with crowns, butterflies, nautical stars, crossbones, crowns, silver jewels. So cool. LOVE these. They go right along with my other favorites from them. The one major difference between these and the other ones with the skulls is that there's more decals in this set- four sheets as opposed to only two. BONUS!

These are from Little Fing'rs and they're called Girlie Nails. I know, I know... Pink package, cheerleading stickers, the word "girlie" on the front... You can't believe I bought these, can you? But I did, I totally did (I even bought a backup)! And can't you see why?! NEON SKULLS! DOGGIES!!! Doggies and kitties and bunnies and penguins and piggies and owls... Ohhhh the little paw prints... I may keel over from the cuteness. I love it so much. I'll buy anything with a doggie on it- I even used to buy that one toilet paper because it had a doggie on it. But the decals... they're awesome. I don't care if it's pink and girly, it has doggies!

I love decals. I would wear them more often if I got to do 'real' manicures more often! It seems like I'm taking off my polish every 10 minutes and I don't want to waste the awesome. But every time I wear them, they're from Fing'rs EDGE. I love it that there's a brand that realizes that not every girl wants frilly frou-frou flowers. Some of us want bats!

Nail Event: Nails Night Out NYC

New York City area nail fans may appreciate this- a fun little get-together for nail junkies is happening this week!

Here's the info:

"Beauty industry top mavens and cosmetic elite join together to paint the
town red and their nails too, for the first stop on the Nails Night Out
national beauty event

Nails Night Out kicks off in New York in partnership with today's top
lacquer brands including Rescue Beauty Lounge, Rescue Beauty Lounge,
Nailtini, Priti NYC, Color Club Nail Polish/Forsythe Cosmetic Group,
Barielle, Jesses Girl Cosmetics, Nailtini, OC Nail Art, Carol's Daughter,
White Lies l Color Truths and PeaceKeeper Cause-Metics.

New York, New York (PitchEngine.com) - Nails Night Out is a gathering of
bloggers, beauty editors, creative directors, lacquer lovers, and
beauty/cosmetics junkies for a night filled with polish splendor. Maybe it was Dark Magic? I should have taken a picture!

Anyway, these are all a black creme base with different colors of glitter, and they are awesome. Unfortunately, my pictures of these are not so good and don't capture the true essence of these polishes. They can give you a general idea of what to expect, though!

Charmed. Black with silver glitter. This is possibly my favorite black/silver combo. This is the one that changed my mind about how much I like silver on black glitters- this silver is SO SHINY. It makes the black look even blacker. It's like a sky full of stars. Perfection.

Enchantment. Black with blue-purple glitter. Blue purple... also known as "blurple"... This looks a little less blue and more purple in real life.

Fairytale. Black with blue glitter. Holy cannoli. This one is freakin' amazing. The blue glitter is so bright, it looks so fantastic against the deep black base.

Magical. Black with orange glitter. A black orange combo! I love it! If you don't like the hexagonal glitter in China Glaze Fortune Teller, this is a great alternative. I adore this.

Spellbinding. Black with red glitter. Similar to another Milani (I can't recall the name) and along the same lines as Piggy Polish Midnight Fireflies / China Glaze Lubu Heels / Rescue Beauty Lounge Black Russian. The red glitter in this one is brighter and more obvious, though.

Whimsical. Black with purple glitter. I think this is my favorite, I can't decide. The purple color of the glitter is so rich, it almost looks like purple polish combined with the black. Like a deep purple shimmer. This is the one I've used the most so far... I just can't stop staring at my nails when I wear this!

The formula on these is decent. It's a little on the thin/watery side and I did need three coats of each, but it went on well and dried quickly all the same. These glitters are very smooth, not rough at all. They do look best with topcoat, it helps bring out the sparkle a little more. Also worth noting, these were very easy to remove compared to other glitter polishes- about the same as regular polish!

I just can't get over how much I love these. I know you're probably thinking, why not just put a glitter topcoat over black? Cause that's what I thought until I wore them. There's so much more depth and interest when the glitter is mixed in. Sometimes the glitter sits just below the surface and you can see it shining through, like it's under water... The glitter is a lot more even when it's mixed in as well. And these glitters are perfect in this black base. They're super shiny and sparkly and they show through beautifully, unlike some others which don't break through the base polish and look lumpy.

My only complaint is that they were kinda pricey... When did drugstore polish start to cost as much as salon?! That's a bummer. I got mine at Meijer, but I've also seen these at CVS.

So much glitter... so much kickass polish!

Nubar Chocolate Truffles Collection Fall/Winter 2009

Here's a little preview of Nubar's upcoming Chocolate Truffles collection! This is due to be released soon... I seem to have misplaced my press release so I don't know the date. Sorry, guys!

There hasn't been any sunlight here, so I had to take these inside... I apologize in advance if they're a little blurry or glare-y. From the top!

Cherry Cordial. A warm red/brown/gold/pink subtle duochrome shimmer. You can see some of the greenish-gold duochrome up near my cuticle. It's not one of Nubar's signature Super Duochromes, more of a subtle effect, a reflection.

Chocolate Caramel. Warm milk chocolate brown base with strong green-gold shimmer. I think this is my favorite of the collection! Well.. no... I'm having a hard time picking *one* favorite, but this is definitely top three. The shimmer is crazy! It's so bold. Electric chocolate. It's so fall!

Chocolate Coffee Bean. Dark chocolate brown with duochrome red/pink/golden shimmer. another very subtle duochrome. The shimmer shifts colors with the angle of your hand. The shimmer in this is also on the large side- almost like glass fleck but colored.

Milk Chocolate Creme. Warm milk chocolate brown creme. Haha, this really does look like milk chocolate! Or melted milk chocolate. I don't think it works as well on my skintone as I hoped, but I'm still going to wear it... Cause... It looks like chocolate!!

Raspberry Truffle. Dark chocolate brown with cool-toned red shimmer. This is another one that's tied for my favorite... It's the darkest color in the collection, vampy even. The shimmer in it is what makes it special- it looks like little glowing embers. The base is so dark and the shimmer is so large and bright, it just looks mesmerizing. Maybe you should view this one full size to get the full effect.

Swiss Chocolate. Soft deep brown creme with purple tones. Maybe this one is my favorite... I don't know... I can't decide. Either way, this one is beautiful. It's not just straight brown, it seems to have a plum or purple tone to it. It's a little cooler than the other shades in the collection so it works on my skintone better. This one also strikes me as looking 'elegant'. It's an elegant brown.

The formula was great. I didn't have any problems at all. The cremes didn't apply the same as the shimmers, but they weren't troublesome. These are very opaque- two-coaters.. I did three coats just because I wanted to see what they looked like with three.. and they looked just like they did at two coats. Drying time is average, not as fast as say, OPI, but not long either. An interesting note- these all dry shiny without topcoat. I'm not wearing any base or topcoat in these pictures.

Overall, I really like this collection. How could I not? It screams FALL!!!! I think my ears are ringing. And if the autumn look of this collection didn't get me, the word 'chocolate' on all the colors would. I am such a sucker. You know what would have been even better? They should have made these chocolate scented. I would die. That would be so cool. *sigh*

China Glaze Khrome For Fall/Winter 2009

When I first heard that China Glaze was doing more chromes, my first thought was, "Oooh, Konad!" and then, "Didn't the do chromes already this year?"

And then I tried them... These chromes are much different than the Romantique chromes. Still good for Konad, but the Khrome collection chromes are nearly mirror-like.

2030. An excellent soft gold chrome. Very smooth and reflective. China Glaze calls this a warm gold, but you know, I think it seems pretty neutral to me. Which is a good thing!

Hi-Tek. Low life... hi-tek... the vectors in control, long live the new flesh... Ahhh, I just love it when a polish name gives me an earworm! Better yet when it's one of my favorite songs! Anyway.... Hi-Tek is a bronzy, coppery warm toned chrome. Maybe even what I'd consider rose-gold. Very smooth and reflective, all of these chromes are super reflective! You can see how nicely decorated my bottle is... Hehehehe :) Of all the bottles that I would expect to break in transit, I'd never expect a China Glaze! They're so sturdy! I was shocked! But it's okay, I think my bottle of Hi-Tek kinda looks like a trophy:

Metallic Muse. Blue-green "seafoam" chrome. The picture really says it all. Shiny, reflective seafoam chrome. Beautiful color for a chrome, too.

Millennium. Superb pure silver chrome. This is my new favorite silver chrome. It really doesn't look like much in the bottle, but when you apply it and it starts to dry, the mirror-like shine starts to appear and you just go "whoa."

Robotika. Soft warm-toned plum-brown chrome. This one kinda reminds me of an old penny- not so old that it's turned completely brown but one that is definitely not its former shiny copper self. I really like the name of this one. Except... it makes me think "Robotnik"... bonus!

Sci-Fi. A silver chrome base with a blue-lavender tint. I wore this one for a while and noticed that it seems to change tones in different lights. Indoors at night, under my kitchen light it looked like a pink-taupe and outside it looked grey. It's a chameleon!

Just for reference, here's one of the Romantique chromes:

Devotion. The Romantiques are reflective, but not as reflective as the Khromes. The Romantiques also showed the brushstrokes in the polish, which the Khromes don't do.

There are a couple of things you need to know about chrome polish formula. One, it dries super, super fast so it's a good choice if you're in a hurry. Two, it shows every single flaw on your nail. Before using a chrome polish, you'll want to either buff out your nail ridges or apply one or two coats of a ridge-filling basecoat, or my recommendation- BOTH. I have ridges- pretty bad ones on some nails- and there is no hiding them in a chrome polish.

These particular chromes, or Khromes rather, have excellent formula. It's smooth and even and extremely opaque. You really could get away with only one coat with most of these- I did two. The drying time is excellent. You can put two coats of one of these on right before you walk out the door and be fine. As far as topcoat goes- I don't think it even needs it. Actually, I think they look better without topcoat. These are some of the most reflective chromes I've ever worn-much more reflective than the old Sally Hansens or Avons or Revlons. This is probably the closest you can get to Minx without using foils. It's not a true mirror-look like Minx, but it's the closest I've seen in polish.

My favorite thing about chromes is that they are *perfect* for Konad. I used two of these for Konads recently, and they turned out AWESOME. Observe:

2030 over China Glaze Emerald Sparkle. Not the best picture, it was taken inside at night. This is my favorite Konad I've done so far. It looks amazing in real life, you have to try it for yourself! The glitter from Emerald Sparkle flashes through between the lines of the design... ugh... so awesome. I think the plate was M73.

Millennium on Orly Matte Vinyl. Chrome on matte is another cool look. It's really bold! The only thing is that the two polishes don't get along well- stuff doesn't seem to want to stick to the matte- and the lines come off in whole pieces after a while. I don't remember what plate number this is- it's one of the "Special" plates- this one is the cowboy plate with the badge and the rodeo thingy.

Overall, I dig these. Good application, amazing for Konad. The colors themselves aren't that special, it's the finish that makes them. I love the futuristic names! Maybe, in the future, robots would wear this polish... And I bet Future Sailors would too.

These are available online and at Sally, but I haven't seen them at Ulta yet.

Zoya UltraGlitter in Luna

Woohoo, it's here! Luna is here!

It's completely dark here, not even a hint of sunlight. Despite the fact that it's my favorite type of weather, it is not ideal for swatching. Anyway, I did an indoor shot and one with flash to try to catch the sparkle.

Luna. A medium-grain silver glitter in a sheer light grey-silver shimmer base. Another unique glitter. I was expecting a plain silver glitter in a clear base, but it isn't! The grey base really stands up to the glitter- it looks like a sequined dress (or glove *cough*)... It's sparkly and shimmery at the same time. Actually, I haven't seen this in full bright light yet so I can't judge the intensity of the sparkle, but it looks promising. I think Luna is a perfect name for this. It really does make me think of the moon... Moon dust, moon rocks... Ziggy Stardust?

So, that's the last of the Zoya UltraGlitters for winter!

Zoya UltraGlitter Winter 2009 Partial Preview

I received some sneak-peek samples of the Zoya Ultra Glitters today and I just couldn't wait to show you. This is a really unique shade. I don't have another one like it! A warm kind of reddish rose pink glitter and a lighter pale pink glitter in a deep magenta sheer base. This color makes me think of Valentine's Day! Or like a little girly pink disco ball on each nail. I might have had a pair of pants that looked like this in the 90s...

Nova. A cooler and darker pink than Astra. This is more of a deep purple-pink, a dark fuchsia or "royal fuchsia". It reminds me a little bit of Roxy, but I'd call them cousins more than sisters. Nova is a dark pink glitter and a light pink glitter in a sheer tinted purplish base. It looks really good next to Astra... I'm already plotting how I'm going to incorporate them into a manicure together... hmmmm....

There's also a silver glitter called Luna, but it's on backorder. I'll be sure to post it when it's available.

I did put a coat of topcoat on these. They're not very bumpy, they're actually quite smooth as far as glitter polishes go, but I feel like they need a shiny topcoat to reach their full potential. This is also three coats. The glitter is pretty dense and the base builds color well, but I don't like being able to see my nail through my polish and three coats takes care of that for me.

The word that keeps popping into my head is GLAM. Total glam.

I'd never really put much thought into pink glitter until a friend was looking for recommendations for bright pink glitter. I couldn't actually think of any! All the pink glitters out there seem to be this odd pale pink, like Milani Disco Lights... No true, rich, vibrant bright pinks. That's really strange, isn't it? I'm glad to see these new pink glitters. They've filled a gap in the market.

Ah, what a wonderful glitter-filled winter!

Jessica Baby It's Cold Outside Collection Winter 2009

Okay, so I'm posting the winter collection before the fall collection.... Cause... frankly... I'm a lot more excited about this one! You'll see why in just a moment.

This is a collection of four vampy shades for winter and they're not just the traditional red-burgundy-brown type shades!

Black Ice. Very dark black creme with sparkly silver glitter. OOOOOH! GLITTER!!! Jessica is a very new brand to me and I really had no idea they did cool shades like this. Pleasant surprise, really! Anyway, I've mentioned before that I'm not normally a fan of the black/silver combo. The black ends up looking dull because the silver is not usually shiny enough. However, I've recently found three polishes that have changed my mind, and this is one of them. The silver glitter is dense and very shiny... Sparkly... twinkly... The black looks very black and the silver looks very bright. Perfect.

Divine Pine. Dark yellow-toned green with hidden shimmer. (Please excuse the scratches and tipwear, photo was taken after two days of wear) GREEEEEEEEN!!! And a very nice one at that. It's nearly-black, but it looks different than a lot of the similar colors. It's darker than BB Couture Green Goblin but lighter than OPI Here Today Aragon Tomorrow or Zoya Envy. I included the second picture with the flash to show the base color and the hidden shimmer. It's not a blue-toned as Sephora By OPI Dark Room. It does look mostly black indoors but outside it's a vampy green. I adore this. Not too dark, not too blue, almost exactly what I've been looking for. And no, it looks nothing like Zulu.

Frost At All Cost. Dark dusty peacock creme. This is an unusual shade. It's a very dusty green-blue... I've seen this color referred to as "peacock blue" and I really think that fits. It's dark but not black. Pretty unique as well, I can't think of a whole lot of colors similar to this... Although, it is very similar to Fishnets and Fringe from the Burlesque (fall) collection.

Midnight Mist. Dark vampy blackened purple with hidden shimmer. This is a little off- it's slightly more 'purple' looking in real life... maybe just a touch more of a lighter red base than this shows. Anyway, purple vampy, can't go wrong there. I want to say this is probably similar to OPI Lincoln Park At Midnight (I recall that being the lighter one?) but I can't find my bottle to compare! This is a very red-toned purple and it has hidden shimmer that only comes out in bright sunlight. The shimmer does help to break up the dark color a little and just gives it a little 'something'...

The formula on these is not flawless, however. I don't know how Jessica formula 'normally' is, but these are thicker than the first ones I tried. They're quite thick but very opaque. I did have a bit of trouble controlling these. The drying time on these is also very long. I've tried them with Seche, Poshe and Diamont quick-dry topcoats and while they do 'set' very quickly, they remain dentable for over an hour. They do eventually dry completely, just not as fast as I'm used to. But, neither of these flaws are pronounced enough to make me want to avoid the polish.

Overall, I really dig this collection. I have been in the mood for vampy shades and I'm actually happy to see this small collection of nothing but dark shades. I'm especially happy that it includes three of my favorite things- green, glitter and purple! I do wish they dried a little faster but that hasn't stopped me from wearing them. In fact, I've been on kind of a Jessica binge this past week... Heh. Hopefully I can get some good pictures soon. All I have to say is Midnight Moonlight omgahhhhhh *drool*

Orly Matte Couture for Fall/Winter 2009

This is Orly's second matte release but I'm not really feeling it... I'm getting matte overload!

Blue Suede. A soft medium blue creme with a satin matte finish. This one was my least favorite of the collection. I like the color but the finish is too... rubbery? I want my mattes to be REALLY matte, not this in-between look like you've been wearing it for a day already.

Purple Velvet. A purple-toned dusty dark mauve with subtle shimmer. This one is slightly more matte than Blue Suede but not completely shine-free. I like this one a lot better. This is the only one with a hint of shimmer- barely visible but it's there.

Matte Vinyl. Matte black creme. This is a pretty good matte black. It's not as deep and dark as the KO black, it's more of a soft black. I used this for the base of a really cool chrome Konad design that I'll post soon.

The formula on these was... so-so. They are a lot thicker than the other mattes that have been released this year and they take longer to dry. I did have a little trouble applying them smoothly, even with my matte application technique that works for all the other ones. Wear time is average for mattes- I wore Matte Vinyl for two days- it was shinier by the end of the first day and chipped on the second day. No better or worse than any other matte.

I think I might be all matted-out for the year. I'm feeling pretty ambivalent about these mattes. I probably would have liked them more if I had them a month or two ago when I was still craving mattes. I love that Matte has finally come back and that everyone seems to be jumping on the matte look bandwagon, but a lot of these matte colors are kind of... what's the word? Mundane perhaps. I'm leaning toward favoring a matte topcoat over matte-finish polishes, it's more versatile. Although, some of the matte-finish polishes have been totally awesome, like the Zoyas (Savita OMG).

Am I being too harsh? It just feels like too little too late to me, you know? I mean... they're not bad, they're just not interesting. I would have liked to see more unique colors and a stronger matte finish instead of an almost-matte.

I do give them bonus points for the gorgeous frosted bottle, and I've always loved Orly's rubberized handles... At least they'll look pretty in my polish room :)

Hahaha, this is cute! Just because it's not cancer doesn't mean that depression isn't serious. Here are some statistics on depression from Uplift Program:

Depressive disorders affect approximately 18.8 million American adults or about 9.5% of the U.S. population age 18 and older in a given year. This includes major depressive disorder, dysthymic disorder, and bipolar disorder.

Everyone, will at some time in their life be affected by depression -- their own or someone else's, according to Australian Government statistics. (Depression statistics in Australia are comparable to those of the US and UK.)

Pre-schoolers are the fastest-growing market for antidepressants. At least four percent of preschoolers -- over a million -- are clinically depressed.

The rate of increase of depression among children is an astounding 23% p.a.

15% of the population of most developed countries suffers severe depression.

30% of women are depressed. Men's figures were previously thought to be half that of women, but new estimates are higher.

54% of people believe depression is a personal weakness.

41% of depressed women are too embarrassed to seek help.

80% of depressed people are not currently having any treatment.

92% of depressed African-American males do not seek treatment.

15% of depressed people will commit suicide.

Depression will be the second largest killer after heart disease by 2020 -- and studies show depression is a contributory factor to fatal coronary disease.

Depression results in more absenteeism than almost any other physical disorder and costs employers more than US$51 billion per year in absenteeism and lost productivity, not including high medical and pharmaceutical bills.

Antidepressants work for 35 to 45% of the depressed population, while more recent figures suggest as low as 30%.

Standard antipressants, SSRIs such as Prozac, Paxil (Aropax) and Zoloft, have recently been revealed to have serious risks, and are linked to suicide, violence, psychosis, abnormal bleeding and brain tumors.

Government (FDA) warnings highlight concerns over the efficacy and use of antidepressants in children. Antidepressants with the exception of Prozac have been banned in Britain for children. The BMJ recently reported they found no scientific evidence whatsoever that SSRIs work for preschoolers (or for anyone under eighteen).

Antidepressants (particularly SSRIs) work only as well (or less) than placebos.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has an 80% relapse rate in the long term.

Physiological problems, plus learned beliefs and behaviors, make functional decisions difficult, and the results reinforce the depression in a vicious cycle.

Depression can “somatize,” or become expressed in the body.

80% of people who see physicians are depressed.

Studies are increasingly linking more illnesses to depression, including: osteoporosis, diabetes, heart disease, some forms of cancer, eye disease and back pain.

Some of the symptoms of depression in adults are:

Persistent sad or "empty" mood.

Feeling hopeless, helpless, worthless, pessimistic and/or guilty.

Substance abuse.

Fatigue or loss of interest in ordinary activities, including sex.

Disturbances in eating and sleeping patterns.

Irritability, increased crying, anxiety or panic attacks.

Difficulty concentrating, remembering or making decisions.

Thoughts of suicide; suicide plans or attempts.

Persistent physical symptoms or pains that do not respond to treatment.

(From SAVE.org)

Depression is something that I suffer from and most people don't understand it at all. It makes everything in my life difficult, even very simple things. Maybe if there was more awareness about depression, more people would understand.

The color for depression awareness just happens to be my favorite polish color: Green.

You can find more information and resources for depression at the National Institute of Mental Health.

Illamasqua Fall/Winter 2009 Collection: Dystopia

Illamasqua has released two new polishes for their latest collection - Dystopia. I love the idea behind this collection. It's even inspired by one of my favorite films- Metropolis. Read about the Dystopia concept here, and I'll post the polishes.

Obsess. This is a really interesting polish- I wish I would have been able to capture all the personality on camera. It might look like just a plain neon pink in these pictures, but it's more than that. This color confuses me- I can't decide if it's pink or purple or neon or not. It seems to flicker between colors. It is a really unique fusion of hot orchid pink and kind of a pinkish bright violet. It also has some hints of warm oranginess... Hmm... I made up a word! It's just really cool. It's something you may have to see in person to get the full effect.

Velocity. A soft, sort of dusty-looking muted light lavender. Kinda like... Sephora by OPI Call Your Mother? Not an exact match, but a kind of similar feeling to give you an idea of what it looks like in real life. Velocity is a lot more saturated and purple compared to Call Your Mother. This is really creamy and pretty and I feel like it's a lot more flattering on me than other similar shades because there's more color to this one.

Of course, the formula on these is awesome. I've come to expect that from Illamasqua and they haven't let me down yet. It's thick but so smooth, rich and pigmented. It goes on with almost no effort at all- it's like the polish knows where to go all by itself! I did two coats. The drying time is average- not super-super fast but not at all long. I had zero application issues.

Really interesting choice for fall! This is the first year I can remember that we've seen more brights than dark vampy shades for fall. I can't say I don't miss the vampies, but I also love these bright shades and I'll never complain about polish companies doing something unusual.

I have more Illamasqua polishes coming up... As soon as I can finish editing this mountain of pictures I've been working on for.... weeks!
