Long time no scrap!

I know it's been over a year! Life took over and long story short, I'm looking to make some changes in my life in the next year and a half. However, despite being super duper busy, that doesn't mean I haven't been scrapping. I do have photos to share and hopefully I'll be able to post those in the next week or so.

Smash Book part 19

This first one may look familiar and that's because there is a similar page, but not with the dictionary paper. I definitely like it much better with dictionary pages. Inked with distress stains, heat dry, and gesso. Sprayed a yellow tinted glimmer mist (very lightly):

More dictionary pages with my tropical colors: pink, yellow, orange and lime (all distress ink colors). I also did it the "old fashioned" way: ink my craft mat and spritz with my mini-mister. Finally, inked the edge of my page for a cool distress look. Your project isn't complete unless you have an inked edge:

Just a page with a bunch of flowers and inked edge. However, stay tuned for another flower surprise (tomorrow) inspired by a man's shirt (of all things!):

First I sprayed the center with brown tinted glimmer mist, then an orange, red, green. Next I took a can of vienna sausage and pressed into my ink pad and then pressed all over my page:

Smash Book part 18

With this first page I attempted some clear UTEE with stamping. The base is acrylic paint. Sorry about the glare but it took me so many attempts with the camera to get a shot that wasn't completely blinded by the flash and it would not come out without a flash. Sigh!:

You might recall a couple of days ago that a table top at my favorite Mexican Restaurant inspired a similar page. Well, Steak n' Shake inspired this one:

With this page I colored with distress stains, crumpled up the paper, unfolded, then rubbed distress ink over the raised parts, spritz with my mini-mister, and iron to flatten and dry:

With this final page for today, I rubbed distress stain on my craft mat, took my paper and did a sloppy accordian fold, and let the paper soak up the ink. Next, I used a craft iron to flatten and dry, sprayed with a brown colored glimmer mist color, heat gun dry:

We're getting there! Just a few more days of photos and techniques!

I'm loving this first page! Acrylic paint with gold embossing powder:

I took an embossing folder and rubbed black soot distress ink using my ink applicator. Then spray gently with a red hue of glimmer mist:

With this one, I went for the plaid look with my distress stains:

Are you ready for some more? This one I used my choice of Distress stains and sprayed a little with Glimmer Mist while the Distress Stains was still wet so it would all blend in a little. Then I tore strips of paper and laid one over the other to use as a mask. Next, spray with a darker color in Glimmer Mist. Dry. Stamp (with the paper still on as a mask) with a script stamp of your choice. Finally, give it a good coat of Glim Glam:

I have these Fleur de Lis stamps in my collection so I decided to do something French. The colors are from Distress Stains and acrylic paint. Unfortunately the White Picket Fence Distress Stains did not coat the paper well enough for the look I wanted. So I used acrylic paint instead for the white:

Ah! This one, believe or not, was inspired by a table top at a local Mexican Restaurant. Done entirely with acrylic paint and stamps. Basically the process was paint, dry, stamp, dry, stamp. This photo looks better in close up and even better in person:

I also have a ton of flower stamps. Distress Stains was my background:

Today I played around with my embossing powder a little bit. The photos don't really do the pages any justice; you really need to see them in person and feel. The first one is with acrylic pain, inked stamp, and using a stencil on the edge with embossing powder:

Remember the bubble wrap? This time I used it with embossing glue and sprinkled with black embossing powder:

Glimmer Mist and gesso. This was meant to be the "negative" version of a page from yesterday, but it did not come out as well as I hoped. I'm going to try something similar soon, but with dictionary paper. So don't think you're seeing double :-):

Hmm...this one did not come out as well as hoped either. Sigh! :-(:

Ok, since I had two bummers in a row, I decided to include a bonus page. This one is Distress Stains, my Tim Holtz Stamper's Anonymous stamps, and Distress Ink. I kept the stamps on the card in their original position since the card is almost the same size as the paper I was working with. Remember, Distress Ink is reactive. So I decided to make this page interesting by using my mini-misters to spray water on it. See how the ink bleeds through the paper? It also created some water spots where the Distress Stains are. Dried with heat gun (carefully! The other side has embossing powder, lol) and inked around edges with some more Black Soot (Distress Ink):

Ooh! do I have some goodies for you today! The first page in today's series I took some more dictionary pages I used one of my favorite stamps inked with emboss glue. I used white embossing powder, and heat gun: This created my resist. Then I sprayed with Glimmer Mist:

I love these pages! :-) This one I started with Glimmer Mist, then took a piece of lace fabric, and rubbed Distress Ink in there:

Another sorry!

Sorry all! but life has been happening here at home so I probably won't have anything for you until some time this weekend.

Today I had to deal with Animal Control. See, last summer our house had a rat problem. Yuck. But if you live in Houston, you have rats. Even in the city proper. They come in from out of the heat. Last summer was pretty bad because of the drought. They even chewed our A/C line which shorted out something and took out the A/C to upstairs where my scrappin' magic happens.

It was so bad that our next door neighbors were also having a problem. Ah! such as life living on the Golf Course; yeah, we look out into the backyard and there's the Golf Course. You see every type of rodent trying to get into the yard. Skunks and possums dig under the fence; racoons climb over the fence and trees.There are some mornings I wake, get the paper, and can tell there was a skunk in our car port during the night. Or, from what I learned when Animal Control came out here to trap a family of possums living under our deck, skunks dig these tiny holes in the mulch looking for these teeny tiny worms to feed on. That, and they love citrus and other fruit. Great. We have a lime tree and a pear tree in the yard. And we can forget having a foot garden in the backyard. Guess I'll get some space at the co-op place at the local Interfaith church.

Anyway, the dog will occasionally go out to investigate when she smells rodent. And yes, the dog has been sprayed a few times by a skunk. She even had to spend the night outside one time because she really got up close and personal with one and we weren't about to give her a tomato juice bath at 11PM. By the way, tomato juice doesn't work, at least not on dogs (don't know about humans); we will only use it to help take the edge off so we can tolerate the smell long enough to get the dog to the groomer.

She also had a close encounter with a raccoon which really scared me. I didn't want the raccoon to rip up the dog; they have sharp claws. But I think the dog scared the raccoon because that thing hightailed it to the nearest tree and jumped into the neighbors yard...who also have a dog.

Then there are the squirrels. The dog LOVES squirrels. I even found a squirrel toy for her at Wal-mart. She loves to chase after it when I throw it down the foyer hallway. She picks it up, walks briskly away with it, chews on it, whips it back and forth with it in her mouth...I wonder what she would do if she ever caught a real one? There are times I think the squirrels are playing with the dog in the backyard as they jump tree to tree and the dog tries to run and jump up at one.

So we trimmed our trees and made sure nothing was within 4 feet of the house, called Animal Control, and got rid of the rats. Everything was fine throughout winter. In summer of 2010 we had bees (FYI) in the attic - a lot of them! Now it's Spring. No, the rats aren't back; but we very badly wanted to rodent proof our house before they could have a chance to come back. Apparently, that is a reality because March is the time of year that rodents are having their babies so they're looking for a place to nest.

I feel better now knowing the house is rodent proof. It's a 3 year warranty. So if we get a rodent up in the attic (can't control the yard), Animal Control will come out and take care of the problem, meaning they will trap the rodent, fine its point of entry, and seal that up. It was expensive, but I have some peace of mind.

Actually, I take that back about controlling the backyard. It's not 100% fool proof because some rodents can climb a tree, but we can control the diggers. Buy a bag of lime and some sand at Home Depot. You make a mixture of the two, dig a small trench along your fence and pour. Now take a watering can and use that to water the mixture. Wait for it to dry. It will be like cement. That is what we did for the deck. We covered it up with dirt afterwards.

But along the fence we have landscape timbers. So before it gets really hot outside we need to do the same along the fence and put the landscape timbers back in place after the lime-sand mixture dries. The digging rodents don't like the feel and if you do it well enough, they will get discourage and leave. It's mainly skunks who dig. Possums are lazy and won't make much effort; they're more like opportunists and will climb through a hole if it's already there. So if we get rid of the skunks we can get rid of the possums.

Smash Book part 11

Oh do I have a discovery to share with you! While heat drying my Gesso on the first page, it started to bubble up. I *LOVED* the result and the texture! just get the heat tool up there close without touching and it will bubble for you. It might even pull up on the paper and start to force the paper to crinkle up. That's ok! If it's too sticky after it's dry then spray with a matte finish.

I sprayed with a brown and a red in Glimmer Mist and then went over my page with Gesso before the GM could dry. Then I took the heat tool to my page:

I thought since the other page worked out so well I would try something similar but with Distress Stains. I covered my paper with Distress Stains (Walnut) in sections and went over each section with Gesso before the Distress Stains could dry. Then I did the next section and repeated what I previously did. While the Gesso was still wet I managed to get a few pieces of scrap ribbon in place; however, I ended up gluing the rest of the scrap pieces:

This one I tried an old Tim Holtz trick. First I covered my paper with Distress Stains, then I took some red tape and put "stripes" on my paper. Sprinkle some embossing powder, heat, and voila!:

Ok, by this time I had to go tame because I was afraid between the Gesso and embossing powder, if I did anymore heating before my matte finish spray arrives that my previous 3 or 4 pages would start sticking together! so I took 3 bright Glimmer Mist colors and sprayed! Then I went around the edges with a brown:

While doing the above page I realized there was some dried Gesso on the paper which reminded me of something. Come back tomorrow to see what it reminded me of...

Smash Book part 10

Sorry about not having anything for you yesterday. I thought I had it set up but I was wrong. Below are the next 4 pages. The first one is Glimmer Mist, Glim Glam, Gesso and Acrylic Paint:

This one did not turn out as well as I hoped. I think it may be one of those things where it looks better on card stock. I took a piece of lace, sprayed over it with Glimmer Mist, removed the lace, placed a paper towel over the paper, and used my brayer to soak up the excess. Then I carefully sprayed around the edges with Chocolate Covered Cherries Glimmer Mist but during the process I decided I liked the splattered look:

This is fire brick Distress Stains with Chocolate Covered Cherries Glimmer Mist:

On this one I used Gesso and acrylic paint blended together and sprayed around the edges (and lightly in the center) with Chocolate Covered Cherries Glimmer Mist. It's rather sticky, even after drying so I'm waiting for some fixatif and matte spray to come in and hope that will solve the problem:

Welcome to part 9! This began with a composition notebook I thought it would be festive to use a composition notebook cover stamp. The background is Distress Stains:

This is so far my most favorite! I used acrylic paint on the background, then adhered black tulle to the paper. While waiting for the glue to dry, and getting practically nowhere with the heat tool, I decided to add another element: embossing powder! Plus, the heat tool melted the tulle a little in some spots. Doesn't it look awesome?:

Ooh! you're going to love, love, LOVE this! Below is a page from an unwanted legal magazine that was heading to the recycling bin. Fortunately I found a few phrases that seemed sentimental:

Smash Book part 6

Sorry for the delay! I've been sick with a cold all week!

The first pic I attempted the ol' lemon juice trick many of us did as kids. To heat, simply use your heat tool. Yes, I know lemon juice is acidic and we try to go with acid free techniques. But I will spray with Krylons "Make It Acid Free" and hope for the best! The left side came out, but the right side not, really. Still, I love the effect:

Torn pages of an old dictionary and inked with Walnut Stain distress ink:

Burlap from Canvas Corp. It comes in two 12x12 pieces sewn together. I separated the two pieces and cut the one so it would fit on my page. There was a little bit of space so I put some more dictionary page pieces in there. I didn't know what I was going to do with the burlap when I began so the dictionary page pieces provided some inspiration. Next, I got out a used piece of my Tim Holtz letters and used it as a mask and sprayed with Glimmer Mist:

Next is canvas, by Canvas Corp. It comes the same way as the burlap discussed above. Only this time I used a scrap piece of DCVW paper with white core I had in my personal stash. It was already punched, Fiskars Leave it to Weaver, which made it all the more ready for me. It was screaming "please use me"! Originally I tore it, but when I saw the white core, I thought 'nah'. Now I wish I kept it that way.

I used a Martha Stewart punch to create a mask for the right side and sprayed with Glimmer Mist using a piece of paper to cover the left side so it too did not get sprayed. That's why I wish I went with my first impression: to tear the paper with the white core because the white core would have gotten colored by the spray. No worries! I can still do that on another page.

Anyway, before the ink could dry I laid a paper towel over it and used my brayer to soak up the excess ink for a soft look. The paper towel bunched up on me which created a look I'll have to try on another page; an unintended consequence, lol. Hmm, maybe I'll go back with my Un-du and try that paper part again (tearing the paper):

My Tangerine Tree

Yes, another non-scrapbook related post. But I promise we will get back to Smash Book pages tomorrow. I tend to do a weeks worth of projects and stuff over the weekend, and sometimes during the week, so I have content for the upcoming weeks. But sometimes I fall behind if I have a busy week or weekend, like if I'm out of town or something.

Anyway, growing up, my grandparents had a Tangerine tree in their back yard. They lived in the Deep South and couple get away with having one. I remember waiting patiently every winter for the fruit to ripen. One year we got to pluck the fruit straight off the tree and eat it right away. However, sometimes, like we do in Houston, the Deep South will get freaky weather during the winter. The Deep South is not known for frosts but one year a freezing temperatures and frost killed their 30 year old Tangerine tree :-(. I think there was freezing weather several days in a row. There goes one childhood memory.

Fast forward to last summer. I had a brilliant plan! Southeast Texas mimic sub-tropic weather. Yes, we gets freezing temperatures every year but I have always paid attention and took care to cover sensitive plants with a bed sheet for protection. So I decided to go for it. I was going to buy a Tangerine tree. Only I did not know there were different types of Tangerine trees.

Looking on the tags and reading the info I decided the Dancy was the type my grandparents must have had; it was the only Tangerine tree that said it was sensitive to freezing temperatures. The others weren't as sensitive to freezing temperatures but they also didn't grow as big. I wanted the same kind of tree my grandparents had. No other would do. And based on the info I had I decided the Dancy had to be my tree.

We got the tree home, found a spot in the yard, and got to planting it right away. But oh no! We're in the middle of a drought. As the weeks and months went by I grew more and more worried about my tree. The leaves weren't looking very healthy and I was afraid maybe it was diseased. Yes, we watered it every few days but apparently we weren't watering enough, or maybe barely enough, for it to take.

I say barely because now that it's winter, and we've been getting tons of rain, my tree is blossoming! FINALLY! There was even a bee pollinating:

It will probably be another couple of years before my new tree starts to grow fruit. I forgot exactly how long. But I know it won't be this winter. So hopefully December 2013 I will see some fruit. My grandparents have been deceased for 10 years now. They died in their mid-90s. But now I have the tree and every time I look out in my backyard I think of them.

Hello everyone! And happy weekend!

Today I want to talk about something that's completely off-topic and unrelated to scrapbooking. And personal. The spelling of my name. You can't get more personal than the spelling and pronunciation of one's name. How many of us feel a twinge of ire when someone mispronounces our name or misspells it? Or mocks it's pronunciation? This can equally effect those who are named Mike or Kathy but prefer to be called Michael or Kathleen. It's a matter of respect to pronounce one's name correctly; even if you innocently mispronounce it, when corrected one should make it a point to remember. Anything less than that is rude and disrespectful.

I mean, come on, a life time of having an unusual name, even popular names, trust me, we've heard every joke, pun, etc. and it's completely unforgivable when some loud mouth dolt mocks it in an attempt to be funny. You're not funny and most of us who are the target will just smile and nod, then walk away thinking 'what a jerk'. Or we won't answer to the way you choose to mock our name.

Yes, I know my name is spelled wrong. Blame my mother. Ok, fine. I know as an adult I could spell it properly but I won't. Call me superstitious but I'm afraid of the Dionne Warwick curse. So here's the story:

Yes, my mother had first child syndrome, meaning when I was born (I am the oldest), she wanted to be clever and festive with my name. She wanted me to have a German first name to go along with my German last name (my maiden name). Never mind my birth given middle name; and please don't take that as a challenge to figure it out. My middle name is now my maiden name, lol. But a LOT of women do that when they get married; move the maiden name into the middle name spot. So I killed my birth given middle name, LOL!

However, until my birth given middle name died a painless death, I would lie if anyone asked me. "Oh yeah, it's Ann". No one would doubt me. But if I dared to tell anyone my real name, the reaction was always the same: "what was your mother thinking of!?!" If you think to yourself that it couldn't be THAT bad, let me tel you a story I heard about the dreaded OJ Simpson. Apparently his mother had an arrangement with her sister that they would name each others kids. The sister had her babies first and I guess OJ's mom gave them horrid names. But when OJ was born, you guessed it, pay back is a bitch. And that's how he got the name Orenthal James, a.k.a. OJ, a.k.a. the Juice. So before any of you can say 'oh, it can't be THAT bad' my answer is "yes, it can be".

Regardless, when I was about 18 or 19 I became aware of monograms and how my initials could potentially spell out a word. I thought it would be really cool if I married someone with a last name that began with an "E"; then my name would spell out the word fame. But then I realized I probably wouldn't hyphenate my name, something that wasn't incredibly popular in the early 80s, and that I should my future husband carefully. Not because he might be a jerk or something, but - believe it or not - based on the first letter of his late name.

I dated men whose last names began with C, D, E (although I did not get my wish), G. OMG! could you imagine your initials spelling the word fag? Even worse, can you imagine having a name like Ima Hogg? L, N...it seemed like I dated my way through the alphabet with no luck at all. Why couldn't I meet a nice guy whose last name began with a B; then I would be fab. Or someone with a last name that began with an "X"; that would have been funny. Then I met my current husband (I've been down the aisle more than once). His last name, now mine, begins with a "T". Yeah, that middle name had to go.

Aside from all that, when I was a child I would have killed for a more normal first name. I wasn't a Karen, or Mary, or Julie, anything common. But this weird name of which I was forced to endure years of torture from people who thought they were being clever, witty or funny. And kids can be so cruel and judge a person by their name, as if I popped out of my mother and said 'give me a weird name'! By the time I got to junior high there were a few kids calling me Freda-Lay, as in Frito-Lay, the corn chip. I had no tools on how to defend myself and was so embarrassed by it that I used a nickname in high school. So I went from Frito-Lay to Missy Prissy. Great. Can't wind for losing, uh? I reverted back to Freda toward the end of my Junior year but I'll get to that later.

Anyway, several decades ago (I'm older than I look - very late 40s), when I was born, my mother wanted me to have the name Freda and with that spelling. My father, who comes from a very strong line of Germans, with a touch of English (yes, I wonder if a member of the English side of the family got sent to Australia), and according to my ancestry.com research some Scottish as well (Cochran clan), told my mother that her chosen spelling of my name does not have the German meaning she wanted unless she puts an "i" in there. F-r-i-e-d-a. The way it's spelled, Freda, has more of a Danish or Dutch meaning and it alters the pronunciation as well.

See, in the German language, if a word has "ie" in it then it's pronounced as an "E". If it has "ei" then it's pronounced like an "I" as in stein. An "oe" or just an "e" is really a hard "A" as in the word bay; so that little piano playing boy in the comic strip Peanuts is really shray-der, not shrow-der. The list of "rules" goes on. In fact, I think the German language has more rules than English does. Confusing, I know. I quit learning German after one semester in college and stuck to French and Spanish. So technically, my name is pronounced Fray-da. But please don't call me that. If you think I'm being over sensitive then please re-read the first couple of paragraphs of this post.

I mentioned learning a little bit of German. That was because I used to work seasonally at Oktoberfest in the bier-garten years ago in the Chicago area. I wanted to understand the songs. I wanted to be able to sing Valerie-Valera in German. We wore name tags and when a German speaker saw my name they always asked "sprechen sie deutsch?" NEIN! Sigh...

Alright, I side-tracked. So my father told my mother that my name doesn't have the German meaning unless there's an "i" in there. BUT, my father is rather obtuse. More than that. He's hard-core and very dictating and that's being kind. It was very difficult growing up with him but that's another story. He might be right, but the way he tells people things, you just don't want to listen or agree with him. Chances are my mother did not like the way he was giving her a "lesson" on German languages and the proper way to spell my name. And there you have it. If you're a mother, and even if you're not, you know how it is: the mother fills out the birth certificate at the hospital. The spelling of my name is now official: F-R-E-D-A.

All my life I've had to listen to failed attempts to pronounce my name. Most people get it right the first time. There's one woman in my community who insists on calling me Fred-a (Fredda) because she knew someone with my spelling who pronounced her name that way. Good for her. But as I said before, it's quite rude and disrespectful not to pronounce someone's name the way they want you too. Equally, you don't call someone Scooter, Turtle, or any number of "nicknames" unless they say it's ok or accept that as a nickname. Needless to say I avoid that women and outright ignore hear when I hear her starting to mispronounce my name.

Now, I have made exceptions in the past. Like the cute guy that I worked with at a grocery store years ago when I was fresh out of high school. He used to call me Fred. But I thought he was just trying to get my attention. After a couple of months of that, one day I was standing in front of him, closer than usual, and he said "oh! your name is Freda! I thought it was Fred. I couldn't see the 'A' on your name tag". And no, we didn't date. Sigh... But this woman I used to work for, and she was mean, she used to cuss out the customers! She thought she was being funny calling me Fred. So I turned around and called her Oreo in an attempt to make fun of her name. And I wasn't trying to be funny or witty; I just didn't like this person I worked for. Her business folded a few months later anyway.

For a while I did put an "i" in my name but that backfired. Now there were people calling me fried or Fried-A. Which brings me to the Dionne Warwick "curse". Back in the 70s, at least I think that's when it happened, Dionne listened to her numerologist and put an "e" at the end of Warwick. Warwicke. She then experienced years of, well, nothing special happening in her career. She eventually dropped the "e" and she came back in the 80s with a couple of hits. So I view adding an "i" to my name as the kiss of death. Plus, everything, even legal documents, has the spelling F-R-E-D-A. If I were to add the "i", I would have to take the time to change all that, including my birth certificate. It's a huge hassle! trust me!

Even when women get married (or divorced) to change your name on every single legal document (social security card, driver's license, passport, checking account, etc) is a huge hassle and can take months to accomplish. If you're a divorced woman, and plan to marry again, you may as well wait until Mr. Wrong #2 (or 3, or 4, lol) comes along to do the name change thing again. It's otherwise a complete waste of time to go back to the maiden name, only to change it again (if you so desire) when you walk down the aisle again. Now, if you have time to kill, or really hate your ex, I won't fault you on that, lol.

Ok, so I mentioned going through a phase in high school where I used a nickname instead of my birth given name. The reason why I switched back to my name was due to a conversation I had with a German couple during my Junior year. I always, up to that moment, felt sort of excluded because I did not have a common name like the other kids I knew. I was envious. I wanted to be like everyone else. I wanted to legally change my name when I turned 18 and not necessarily to the nickname. Just to anything that was common, anything I thought I could live with.

One day I was talking with a German couple and I asked them about common girl names in Germany. They gave me a short list. I tossed in a few others like Ingrid, and I forgot what else. Then I took a big breath and asked the big question: "what about the name Freda?" The woman jumped all over that one. She told me it was a common name, though not as common as others, but there were indeed many MANY Freda's in Germany. That's when I confessed that my real name is Freda, but without the "i". And that's when they told me about the Dutch meaning to the spelling of my name. I was so relieved to have a common name, even if it was in the wrong country. I immediately switched back to using my birth given name.

On another note, I have searched Social Security records, which records how many children in any given year were given certain names and the specific spellings. I forgot how far back the records go, but in my year there were several Freda's. I have also Google'd my name, both married and maiden name, same spelling, and I am quite surprised at how many people share my name. In fact, under my maiden name, there are two other women in my city, about the same age as me; one owns a house and the other (of a different ethnicity) has an arrest record we won't discuss. Sigh!

So, other than the fact that you probably don't know very many Freda's personally, and that my name rhymes with a popular alcoholic beverage that also defines to a certain extent my tropical spirit and lifestyle, my name is more common than I originally thought. Also, I've learned my lesson to focus not on what I don't have, but to focus on what I do have and embrace it. I'm keeping my name. And the spelling. :-)

Perfect Pearls and Distress ink (on edges). Hmm, this one did not come out as well as I hoped. But there was an unintended consequence: everywhere I stamped perfect medium it shows:

This one might be hard to see. I sprayed using my choice of color with Glimmer Mist, laid a paper towel over it, then a brayer pressing down very hard, and lift. You can barely see the little dots from the paper towel:
