Monday Make It Challenge{on a Tuesday}: Pantry Subway Art

This weeks Monday Make It challenge comes to you on a Tuesday. {Monday holidays always throw me off} The challenge is to make something for your kitchen. It can be decor or something to help organize or some kind of storage...your pick!
Here is mine:
The Silhouette Online Store has subway art for everything...chores, coffee, cocktails and even Black Friday...but nothing for pantry. I wanted to put something on my pantry door, and I wanted that something to be subway art. So I made it myself. It was easier than I thought (except for the installation but I'll get to that).
I downloaded some random kitchen utensil designs and opened the Design Studio (sorry about not having pictures). Then I just added words to a 8.5 x 10 space. I used varying fonts and sizes, filling in empty spaces with pictures of kitchen-y items.
Learn from my lesson...save it BEFORE cutting it. My netbook froze up after cutting out the design while I was peeling away the vinyl not needed. I can't reprint this one ever again.... :(
Installation is usually pretty easy with vinyl appliques. But I was doomed from the get go. I had a touch of vertigo last night. As a result I had a little problem getting it straight. I was able to peel it away a few times (thank goodness) and readjust. I think this is what caused the sticking problem I was having afterwards...or lack of sticking I should say. It was tedious...but I got it all adhered. The whisk was a...you know what!
All in all..VERY happy with the result. My husband pointed out that I used the exact font the Nutella company uses on their packaging. I would love to say that was intentional, but it was a happy coincidence.
What do you think?? Pretty awesome, huh?

We have some yummy stuff in the pantry!

Working on a whole calendar memo system using chalkboard vinyl, but I ran out of chalkboard vinyl and need to get some chalk pens....so that will be for a later post. Thanks for looking!

A Little Quickie...Remember This Journal

Better late than never. I know I should have done this to have for the first of the year...but I just saw a post that gave me the idea. So, really, it's not my fault.
This little journal is to help me remember all the cute, funny things my boys say and do. I have an AWFUL memory. When I finally get to scrapping this year, I want to be able to include all the little things that happened that don't necessarily have a picture to go with them.
It pulled together rather quickly. I had leftovers from the Simple Stories Life Documented collection I used to scrap 2009. Sticker phrases are Cosmo Cricket Tiny Type.

Each month gets a handful of pages. Originally I was thinking one side of a page for each day. That would have been a really fat journal!

Monday Make It....{Re}Purposed Binder

This weeks Monday Challenge is to re-purpose an item that was headed to the trash or recyle bin.

I had a small binder I was going to throw away. It was sticky and had scribbled pen marks on it. I decided to turn it into an address book. Ideally I would love all my phone numbers and addresses to be stored in my cellphone...but that always ends up biting me in the you know where. They never seem to transfer to a new phone...and I end up having to start over. Solution: a permanent copy for our kitchen bookshelf.

First you need to cut apart your binder. This is actually pretty easy to do using an exacto knife or a pair of scissors.

Next get to strippin'. The binder! Take all the plastic off the binder pieces. Trickiest part is under the binder clips...use an exacto knife to slide in there and slice from the fastener to the edge. You should be able to tear the piece off now.

I have a favorite pair of jeans that had holes in the knees. I turned them into shorts and saved the legs. This is what I wanted to use to cover my binder. Enter Modge Podge (cuz I can't sew very well). ***To add a little structure to the seams I first adhered the three pieces to a piece of cardstock. (Just at the spine and part of the front and back cover).

I covered the insides with pieces of jean too...in hind sight I should have used the clean cut fabric interfacing and my silhouette for a nicer edge...oh well...live and learn.
Ta da........love it! Had to include the tear that came with the jeans because those tears are expensive!

That hole added about 10 bucks to the cost of these jeans.

Rest of the book was finished with some For the Record papers and cardstock stickers by Echo Park. Dividers are a Silhouette download that I resized for my needs. I also included a page at the very beginning for web addresses too. Easy Peasy. Gonna be tearing off the ugly plastic covers on all my binders now!

Need to Learn Your ABCs?? It's In The Bag!

I made a New Years Resolution to blog more. Since this is a craft blog, that means crafting more too. Pretty excited that I actually have a second project done and it is only January 5th! Go, me!!
I had a hankering to make a paper bag album. I love the crunchy noise they make. But what to make it for or use it for or put in it??? I was doing some Kindergarten prep with Jake and decided an alphabet book would be an awesome project. Josh could use it too. And they would both enjoy the crunchy noise it makes when you turn the pages.
So here it is....and ABC Book.
First I folded the bags in half and creased the fold with a bone knife. I opted to not stack them inside each other as I need to use several to fit the whole alphabet. I didn't want that waterfall like edge from using too many.

To cover the pages I used several different sheets from various October Afternoon Collections....Fly a Kite, Seaside, Daydream, 5 & Dime, Sidewalks, Schoolhouse and a shape sticker sheet from the Report Card Collection.

I have three boys. They are a serious demolition crew...so I went with a worn and torn look. Each 5 x 5 sheet I cut was distressed on the edges and then crumpled up and re-flattened. Fun.
For the letters I used some Core'dinations cardstock and my Silhouette. I sanded the letters and adhered them in the book.

I had bigger visions for this album...pull out tags since the bag has a premade pocket...but then realized a 2 and 5 year old would be using it and kept it simple. Pretty excited with the outcome. It looks really cool.
Used my Cinch to punch holes in it but decided on two binder rings to hold it all together.

I foresee more of these albums being made. Maybe a number one.

This was a true Scrap-ements projects. Fifteen minutes here, fifteen minutes there over the course of two days.

Monday Make It Challenge

I am challenging my scrappy friends on facebook and all my blog followers to a Monday Make It Challenge.

Make a notebook. Alter an existing one....make one from scratch...whatever gets you motivated.

Here is mine with a quickie how to. Pretty happy with the finished product.

Started with a pre-binded chunk of plain paper (had this in my "keep it and maybe I'll use it" pile), a few sheets of Quite Contrary Paper from MME (love this paper as I have a bit of an owl obsession happening), really nice fabric (donated to me by my awesome friend Sharon M.), a 12 x 12 piece of black chipboard and some fabric interfacing for the Silhouette.

First I did some measuring so see how much I would need to cut off so that the paper would fit nicely in the about to be chipboard cover.

measure twice, cut once or eyeball it and cross your fingers

It turned out to be the perfect width, so all I had to do was cut off some length and score it in the middle to create a spine.

Then I covered the inside (minus the spine) and the outside (minus the spine).

Now for the spine...I ironed the fabric to the Silhouette interfacing and stuck it on a cutting mat. Then I took FOREVER picking just the right shape for the front side...downloaded a bunch of non-relevant shapes...organized the newly added shapes.... After all that I ended up with a pretty basic shape for the spine. I am so good at getting side tracked.

Adhering it to the spine was a fun challenge. I had used up all my double-sided-super-sticky-adhesive. So with a mixture of glue dots and Diamond glaze....I got that thing to stick!
All that was left was embellishing and sticking the bunch of paper on the inside (another challenge that involved a lot of different mediums).

I have mentioned Simple Stories before. And I am going to mention it again. I LOVE this system.
They have new collections coming out. In fact, I just purchased Baby Steps...can't wait to get it. I am going to get Josh's baby album done just like that {snapping fingers}.
In the meantime, I have been working on a school album for Joey. I plan on doing the same for Jake and Josh too. The ele.ment.ary collection is perfect for this!! Just perfect.

New Menu Planner

We are headed to a new Farmer's Market this weekend. I am so hoping it will be a good one...we have very few in the Las Vegas area, and they usually stink. But this upcoming adventure has inspired me to make a new board for our weekly menu planning.
I used a large empy frame that my Dad gave me (from his very cluttered garage). It involved a lot of measuring (yuck). But, I love the way it turned out though.

My previous menu planner board involved magnets. Magnet that I usually dropped behind the bookcase. While I really did like it...I was up for a color and style change. Something a little more cheery.

I still need to re-alter the clipboards I hang on either side for lists and important coupons. But that is for another day. This was challenging enough to do while the baby was asleep and the older two were crammed in my scrap cave with me.

Creative Procrastination

I have a To Do List a mile long. Seriously, have so much laundry and cleaning to do. Need to go grocery shopping which will involve a trip to WalMart as well. All I have managed to accomplish this week after traveling the last THREE weekends is one load of laundry. I did clean my scrap cave. It was destroyed. That made me want to make something. So,I figured, why not make a book for my to do lists, and shopping list and whatnot's.
Here is what I came up with:

I used some heavy book boards by 7gypsies and the MME Life Stories Collection. I had a chunk of already bound graph paper from an old journal that was taken apart. That is what I built the cover around.
It was a quick project...but procrastination none the less. Oh well........guess I better work on that grocery list now.

Last Minute Tooth Fairy Pillow

My oldest just lost his first tooth. It was wiggly for a few weeks, but I waited until the day it fell out to worry about what to put it in for the Tooth Fairy.

I have vivid memories of my Mother playing the Tooth Fairy when I was little. Of course at the time...I had no idea it was her. She would dress in a black leotard and put on a wig and sneak in to our room as the Tooth Fairy.
So I thought it would be very appropriate to use an old denim jacket I had that was my Mom's to make a tooth fairy pillow for the boys. I could have gone super fru fru with this if only I had girls. I decided to keep it simple (maybe add to it later when I am not pressed for time).
I took a piece of the demin I cut from my Mom's jacket (about 16 inches x 8 inches) and made it into a pillow. I am not in the least bit a sewer...so this was hand stitched.

I then cut out a tooth shape using my Silhoutte and Clean Cut Fabric Interfacing. Of course I had already sewn the last side almost completely shut when I decided to sew on the tooth (it was only ironed on) and had to unstitch it.

I then added a little pocket for the tooth using some of the fabric scraps I had. Then I spelled out TOOTH with an arrow using my imaginisce i-rock and some Glam Rocks - Pearl.
Love how it came out. And it is now holding a tiny tooth....for the Tooth Fairy.

Child's Desk ReDo

Once upon a time, I was a little kid with a yellow and black desk that had fruit on it. I am so thankful that my Mom never got rid of this. And super thankful she did the grunt work of sanding it where it needed sanding! A few years ago, my father brought it out to me in Nevada from New Mexico. Joey was probably barely four at the time. It didn't stay in our house very long. At the time, Joey would not allow the "kick stand" to be open so the desktop would be level. He insisted on it being slanted. And after several slams of the lid and several heart attacks thinking that he or Jake lost a finger, it went back in the garage.
Don't you just love the fruit design on the front! LOL

We have had several versions of desks in and out of this house. Most took up way too much room and did not last very long. So I figured this may be the perfect solution. I made both boys promise that they would keep the "kick stand" up so it would be somewhat safer (I am still working on a solution to make it stop slamming). It was time for a trip to Home Depot to pick out paint. As my husband has recently pointed out to me, Joey has my crafty creativeness. We are also both the type that like things a certain way. We had different visions for how this desk would turn out. First we had to settle on a paint color. Thankfully we were both happy with it being blue. I love lighter blues and black together. The color we both finally agreed on is Glidden's Blue Marina. Ironically it ended up being pretty much the same blue that was in some scrapbook paper I was hoping to use to decorate it.
Here is the desk after a few coats of blue and a few sprays of black spray paint. Thanks to my neighbor, Heidi, for helping me get all the tiny spots (she donated some not being used make up brushes!!).

I spent last night watching the Red Sox vs Angels game cutting up some Bo Bunny Blast Off paper. Then this morning I mapped out how I wanted to place it on the top of the desk. To be fair, I asked Joey for his opinion. Oh BOY! After a few minor placement arguments....we agreed on what you see here. The pieces have been stuck on with Mod Podge. And I am in the process of polyurethaning the crap out of it. It came out pretty good if I do say so myself...almost afraid to let the boys use it.....

Been There, Done That...Map LO

This is my Travel/Vacation Layout for the March CropChocolate Chocolatier's Monthly Challenge.

It incorporates both travel and vacation. I wanted to document where we (as a family) have gone together in the USA. I have started with trips my husband and I have taken and added trips that have included our boys. I really love how it turned out. I have been wanting to do something like this for a while. I even started cutting a map out by hand using a template...uh...yeah...got 4 states done. Then I got a Silhouette! One of the first images I bought with my newly acquired download card was the puzzle map.
Supplies used:
BasicGrey Wander CollectionBrown Ink
TONS of White Thread
Two Pieces of Kraft Cardstock
i-rock by Imaginisce and crystals
Arrow Photo Turn (pretty sure it is 7gypsies)
Thickers Remarks Shoebox Chipboard Letters
How to:
Cut out the puzzle map several times using different pieces of Wander cardstock. Piece it back together on a sheet of kraft cardstock alternating the patterns.
Stitch a border(hand stitched thanks to a lost bobbin).
Cover plain chipboard letters with an additional piece of patterned cardstock.
Adhere letters to kraft cardstock.
Stitch arrows to point the "there" and "that".
Marked places visited with crystals.
Using an additional sheet of kraft cardstock construct a little book to use as a key.
Decorate with Wander chipboard stickers.
Use photo turn to keep it closed.
Ta Da....you have a map that you can use to track all your adventures!!

Love Our Boys.

Got a chance to scrap over the long weekend. I absolutely love how this came out.
I used Basic Grey's Wander Collection that I got on CropChocolate (LOVE this site!!).

How I made it:
Firstly....it is scraplifted (view original layout here).

To make the black lines, I used crafting thread. Then I cut out a 1 1/4 inch square out of some clear packaging to use as a template for selecting photos. If the face fit in the square...I used it.

I then placed them on my completed grid...along with square I cut out from the cover sheet of the collection pack (no need to waste a 12 x 12 piece of paper for a little square).

Next, I light wrote in where I wanted the words to go.

Had originally intended on using some black Thickers for the words, but I really like the font of the letters that came with the collection (plus they ended up matching the solid paper I used for matting).

I cut out mats using the solid side of the GPS paper. Then I inked all those edges as well as the patterned papers from the collection cover sheet.

I think this will be a layout for one of those 12 x 12 scrapbook frames.

Scraplifting, Scrapping and Scrap Happy!

Since getting my Scrap Cave cleaned and reorganized, I have been able to get four layouts done. Wow, amazing what a clean space can do for your mojo! The first three layouts are for a Scraplift Me Challenge I am hosting on facebook.

This layout was scraplifted from one I saw on Technique Tuesday. I used Fancy Pants Designs It's Your Day Collection. Love these pictures of Josh ever so daintily eating his birthday cake. I was really expecting a mess. Nope.

I can never make that cluttered embellishment look work for me...I tend to lean towards the simpler look. I did stitch around the dotted page. Most edges have been distressed and inked. I absolutely love this photo of Josh. I used Basic Grey Basics for this layout.

...I could make it stay clean and organized.
Remember this picture from a few days ago?

Well, after several hours and a few "helpers", my scrap cave is clean and organized!!! Yippee. Let the scrapping (and inevitable messing up of the room) begin!

As much as I would love one of those spaces where everything has a cute little storage container, I am a visual person. I need to see what I have.

The only thing I really have in a storage container is all my paper. But that I have separated by brand.
Anyway....so glad to be done with this. Can I tell you how much fun it is to clean (anything for that matter) with the help of 3 little boys. Joey wanted all my stuff, "Mommy, can I have this? Do mens scrapbook too?". Jake only want to dump out all the buttons. And Josh was in to everything he could reach!

Now if I can find the time in the next few days....I am hoping to use the space. ALONE! :)

I am not a huge fan of New Year's Resolutions...but I am going to set a goal for myself. In this New Year, I am going to:

post a blog at least once a week
create something new at least once a month
keep my Scrap Cave under control

I guess I have the first of those goals accomplished for this week anyway. In order to get on the second one, I am going to have to do the third.

YIKES!!! (how did this happen?)

I will say that I have started re-organizing. I know, it is very hard to tell. I actually have accumulated a box of things I am going to post on www.craigslist.com.

Once I do get this space under control...I would like to get to work on my 2010 Family album. So far I have the title page done:

But since I am using the Simple Stories approach it should not take that long to do the whole year....yeah right! Well, not as long as it would normally take.

Hot Chocolate Winter Wreath

Decided to make a wreath using scrapbook paper. Instead of making it specific to Christmas, I opted for Winter (that way I can leave it up longer).
What you will need:

large cardboard circle
several triangles (mine are roughly 3 x 4 square cut diagonally in half): I used Hot Chocolate by Fancy Pants Designs
adhesive
stapler
ink

I cut a whole bunch of triangles using double sided cardstock. I really had no idea how many I would need.

Then I stapled (so as not to waste all my adhesive...plus it was super quick this way) them to look like the picture below. Before stapling, I did ink the edges. That is optional. I have a thing about inking or distressing edges. I then crinkled them for dimension.

Once I finished with one pattern, I placed them out on the cardboard circle to see how I wanted them.

I found it easiest to place on at the top, one at the bottom and one on each side (at 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock). Then I filled in the spaces between with more.

Basically from this point on you just rinse and repeat.

Third row (was looking a little iffy at this stage and I found that maybe using a double sided cardstock with a solid whitish side was not the best).

By the fourth row I was running out of room, so there are smaller triangles used so that I could fit two in between the larger ones.

For the center I cut out the snowman from one of the papers. I wanted to bling him up a little. The hat was covered with textured ribbon. The body was covered with glitter glaze. I used some black bling for the "coal" eyes. The mouth is dotted with Diamond Glaze. The nose is a piece of ric rac. It ended up looking very carrotish! I can't believe I didn't have any ribbon to use for the scarf...but nothing in my stash matched right. So...I used some of the stickers that came with the collection.

For the middle I used a larger circle that I crimped all around the edges. The next circle I stitched. After placing the snowman in the middle, I used more of the glitter glaze to make "snowflakes".

Then all that it need were some arms. Thanks to my messy backyard...I had plenty of little twigs for that.

Very happy with the finished product. I am looking forward to making another one and tweaking the process a bit.

I just love this collection of papers by Bo Bunny Press. It is called U Bug Me....so appropriate for an album to put pics of my boys in...ha ha.
I used an acrylic album and added some inserts for journaling and extra photos. Can't wait to use this one. I cut out as much as I could from the patterned papers to use as embellishments. It ended up being a really thrifty album to make.

My First Paper Bag Album

Made my first ever paper bag album. It was fun. This version is a waterfall album.
How I made it:
You need two paper bags. The ones I used were about 10.5 inches tall and 5.25 wide (closed). To save myself from math that would be too complicated I trimmed it to 10 inches.
Take the first bag and fold it so just the bottom of the bag is on top. This creates the front of the album (the part of mine that has the B and the car)and the back of the album (the part of mine that has the S). The front should measure about 3.5 inches.
The second bag gets folded so that the bottom of the bag stops an inch from the top of the bag (these are the pages that have the O and the Y on them). When you bind these together you should end up with each page after the cover being an inch longer than the one before it.
The last two pages (one is the back cover also) are the part of the bag that opens. I inserted additional pull out pages here (a total of four).
This was a really simply album to make and a lot of fun.
