Scrap-Happy Quilter

Hi Everyone!

2017-06-23T12:31:00.001-05:00

Just wanted to say hi. I've been away from my page forever, and really miss it. Hope to be posting on a regular basis again soon :)

Throwback Thursday - Memories of making this Circle of Geese quilt block!

2015-04-23T14:23:00.002-05:00

It's Thursday- in the social media
world, it's better known as TBT-
Throwback Thursday!

I was greeted by Facebook this morning with this "quilter's eye candy" reminding me that I posted this picture exactly 5 years ago today! I had lots of fun making this block for Joyzelle, in an online swap, so I decided to give your eyes a treat today too, and re-share this block and a great tutorial for it also!

In this swap, there were 12 ladies, and each gal chose a block and fabrics to send to the other 11. We were to make the block and sent it back to her. When I got my packet, I was excited because I loved the colors and choice of fabrics, but I was literally scared to death about making the block!

I had machine pieced lots of blocks before, but never nothing like this! Paper piecing intrigued me, but I sure had doubts about enjoying it. Boy, was I surprised to find out that I actually enjoyed making the block, and the block turned out so cute, too!

When I shared this on my timeline this morning, a friend asked if I still had a pattern for it. I knew that I still had a paper copy, and I was pretty sure I had pinned a tutorial for making the block onto one of my pinterest boards. So off I went to Pinterest, only to find that the picture of the block came from a Flickr feed, without an actual good tutorial to go along with it.

Next, I done a quick Google search, and found this awesome tutorial! Perfect, to share with those that asked for some directions to make the block. Thanks so much Christina Lane, for the awesome tute!
http://sometimescrafter.com/2009/08/tutorial-paper-piecing-block/

I also added a new pin to my Sewing / Quilting Tips And Tutorials board on Pinterest, reminding me where to find the directions again if I decide in the future to make a few more of these blocks. I think several of these blocks would make a neat table runner as well.

Christina, also has a terrific blog with lots of neat articles, if you want to head over there and visit some time, she'd love for you stop by and say hi!

Why your backing fabric may ripple when using fusible batting

2015-04-16T19:02:00.001-05:00

After sandwiching your quilt with fusible batting,
have you ever experienced rippling on the
backing fabric?

This article explains why it may have happened,
and shows you how to prevent it in the future!

Since I usually use a frame and a mid arm machine when quilting my quilts. I don't use the fusible batting on a regular basis. But, I do occasionally use basting spray, and only twice have used fusible batting.

I must have had the luck of the draw when I used the fusible, for the first time. Mine did not ripple, and the process went smoothly. I'm really glad I was lucky that day, because I had no idea there was a right and a wrong side to fusible batting.

There is in fact, a right side. And this article describes what scrim is, and how to tell the right side from the wrong side of fusible batting. You'll end up with no more ripples on your backing fabric, Which will also make sandwiching your quilt so much more enjoyable. Hopefully you'll find this article enjoyable and informative. Especially if you are new to using fusible batting, or have had a bad experience with it in the past.

Hope you have a sew happy day!

Some Exciting News

2012-12-28T20:53:00.001-06:00

Hi everyone, just wanted to let you in on some more exciting news about the Lincoln chapter of Quilts For Kids community service project Quilts For Kids..by Kids!
Awhile back we asked Jenny at MSQC to do a video tutorial for us to help teach young teens participating in the project how to sew our Preemie Quilts. Sometimes in large workshops, or classrooms where FCS teachers or 4-H leaders, present our project to lots of students, there isn't always enough instructors for a lot of one on one time with each student. We thought the video would be a great learning tool, that students would find fun and helpful, to include in our presentations at workshops or in classrooms.
Misourri Star Quilt Co. released the video on the 21st of December, what an awesome Christmas present for us! You can find the video here: Quilts For Kids - A Baby Quilt From The Heart and a fantastic blog post on the MSQC Cutting Table Blog, describes the project here: Quilts For Kids..By Kids Community Service Project and some wonderful pics of kids hard at work making some quilts. Of course, when you get through reading our article, you can also check out the Cutting Table Blog further to read other awesome articles as well We are so gracioussly thankful to Jenny and the whole MSQC staff for making this possible! December News & Updates For Lincoln Quilts For Kids

2012-12-06T20:25:00.000-06:00

December Workshop:

I thought I better post to remind everyone that our December workshop is coming

up fast, on the 15th! We'll be back at Havelock United Methodist Church at our

regular time.

I will bring chili, potato soup, and some desert, along with coffee and punch.

If anyone would like to bring something else, just let me know.

We will again have our $5.00 gift exchange, which is voluntary, if you bring a

gift, you'll receive a gift. Eveyone picked such great gifts last year!

I sure hope a lot of you can make it to the workshop, I miss you!

Just to let ya know, my back is doing better, not 100% yet, but lot's better!

Upcoming Event:

"Quilts On The Rail"

At our Nov. workshop, we were invited by the musuem staff to participate in

their quilts on the rail display, where quilts are displayed along the grand

staircase, for three weeks. If any of you would like to make an "extra" special

quilt for the display you are welcome to. Although, all of your quilts are

gorgeous, some might want to do a little bit more elaborate quilting or a

special pattern.

Our quilts will most likely be displayed during Febr. starting on the first

Friday of the month. The musuem also will hand out our brochures to museum

guests.

On the first Friday of each month, the musuem has free addmission so if you

wanted to bring any family or friends to see our display, you can all get in

free for the day.

Completed quilts

If anyone has any completed quilts, please send them in, or bring them to the

workshop, so I can include them in the last delivery of the year! Which will go

to Saint Francis in G.I.

We are SO CLOSE to an UNBELIEVABLE number of quilts made and delivered to

hospitals by this chapter this year, that I would just love to be able to hit

that number or even go over it!

You ladies have all done such an incredible job this year making such gorgeous

quilts and LOTS of them, I just wanted to say I am so proud of all of you! And

am also so very thankful for ALL the extra "behind the scenes" help I have

received this year from such a great group of friends!

Received Quilts:

I have some pics to post of some adorable quilts received from Alex and Jan,

and today the mailman brought a big box with LOTS of Preemie quilts that have

been completed by the Pierce, NE. FCCLA chapter and other volunteers from

Pierce,NE. It will be fun to see how some of those kits everyone helped to cut,

have turned out, so be watching! I'll be trying to get pictures taken tomorrow,

and over the weekend.

Hope to see you at the workshop on the 15th.

If you are not a Lincoln Quilts For Kids chapter volunteer, and would like to help make a quilt for a child in a Nebraska hospital, please contact Ila at lincolnnequiltsforkids@gmail.com and we can send out a pre cut quilt kit for you to complete that has everything included to make a quilt, except the 1/8" low loft batting. Your completed quilt will be donated to a child that is in a Nebraska hospital.

Quilts received from the Plainview, NE. FCCLA students

2012-11-29T11:27:00.001-06:00

On November 10th. the students of the Plainview, NE. FCCLA chapter held a community day at their local high school, featuring our Quilts For Kids by Kids program as their selected project for the day. The students, teachers, and friends gathered to make Preemie quilts for children in Nebraska hospitals. Lincoln Quilts For Kids provided the quilt kits, which include everything to make a quilt. Some of these young students had never sewn before, and were excited to make their first quilt to donate to a child in need. They had a fun day, and these are some of the quilts that were made that day.

Happy Thanksgiving!

2012-11-22T09:35:00.001-06:00

Wishing all a Happy Thanksgiving, and hope you have a wonderful day with family and friends. And since it is the holiday season, don't forget to set your scales back 10 pounds at midnight tonight, so eating all that great food won't seem so depressing, hehe!

QFK Workshop at the International Quilt Study Center & Museum in Lincoln

2012-11-21T19:29:00.000-06:00

A few of our Quilts For Kids chapter volunteers had an awesome day at the International Quilt Study Center and Museum here in Lincoln, last Saturday while we participated in their Quilts For the Community day!
Lisa, one of our volunteers from Plainview, brought her son Eric and DIL Maria, to join in the fun of learning how to make a quilt. The two of them, with the help of Mom, started working on a QFK kit quilt, and by the end of the day, only had three borders left to go on the top! Great job!
Kathy and Patricia travelled from the western part of the state to attend the workshop and enjoy the wonderful tour of all the fabulous quilts on display at the musuem. And Leslie came from Omaha.
Kathy, Patricia, and Leslie all brought their adorable little machines with them, I just love em'! We missed those whom couldn't come, but we'll be going back again, so you'll get another chance to join us.
We also had some very pretty quilts turned in today at the workshop, Thanks ladies!

Can't believe I've been gone so long!

2012-11-20T08:16:00.000-06:00

I'm so sorry time has slipped by at such an alarming fast speed, since I've last posted. I had good intentions back then, to try and get back in the habit of posting regularly. But I failed to be able to get it done. The family has been busy, and as a leader for the QFK chapter, and its wonderful growth in the last year, it keeps me hopping!
I have posted regularly on our chapter's Facebook page, and in our QFK Yahoo group, but now that Facebook is selectively limiting our audience that sees our page's posts, I am going to try a new approach, which hopefully will get me posting more on here. I've missed my little space here in blog land, and I've missed all of you too!
Wishing you all the best in the coming Holiday season.

Update from Ila

Four more of Susan's quilt pictures found!

2011-09-16T16:48:00.000-05:00

When Susan first heard about our Lincoln chapter of Quilts For Kids back in May, she made these four very wonderful quilts for boys and donated them to our chapter! Unfortunately, like the quilts in the previous post, these didn't get posted here. But, since I've been trying to reorganize the files on my computer, I come across these, and seen they hadn't been posted! They are too beautiful not to share them! You did an awesome job on them Susan, thanks so much.

Quilts donated to LQFK

2011-09-16T11:15:00.000-05:00

I found these pictures of some quilts that were donated this summer, but that unfortunately didn't get posted here when I was having trouble with my computer, and then also my camera.I wanted to share their beauty with you. And also let the volunteers who sewed so much love and talent into these, know that they were greatly appreciated! Most of these were donated to Omaha Childrens Hospital in our recent delivery to them. And the others, were donated last week to St. Elizabeth hospital, here in Lincoln. Thanks so much, Ann, Susan, and Elaine! Make sure to visit Elaine's blog also, she makes some truly gorgeous quilts and has a very enjoyable and informative blog as well!

These two bright and cheery quilts were made from Ann's own stash, then donated to LQFK! I think every child would love to have a quilt with these bright beautiful balloons on it! And the second, is so cute with its bright polka dots!

These two are from Susan, she pieced both from LQFK kits. And did such a wonderful job on quilting them! Thanks Susan, for both of them, they are so pretty! Here's the first one.

When I was cutting the kit for the second one, I accidentally shorted her two strips in the kit. Because of my mistake, she was unable to make two more nine patch blocks to complete another row, but look how wonderfully she managed to compensate for my error! I love both the fabric and the technique she chose to fix my boo boo!

Here are the two that Elaine pieced from kits and quilted so beautifully! The first one is actually a four patch, but doesn't seem like it with the colors placed the way they are! I also had to mention the perfect name she picked for it. Purple Slurple!

A close up of her beautiful quilting!

And this nine patch is really cute too!

Bags Of Love - Lincoln Quilters Guild

2011-09-12T14:56:00.000-05:00

I sewed these bags from kits that I brought home from guild. They will hold a quilt, personal care items, an outfit, or other items, and will be given to children whom are removed from their homes in emergency situations. when sometimes there is no time to gather up personal items to take with them. These provide children with their very own Bags Of Love.

Santa Sacks

2011-09-12T14:31:00.002-05:00

I sewed these cute Santa Sacks this summer for the Santa Sock program at the Lincoln Quilters Guild. These sacks will be filled with items like mittens, hats, personal care items, small toys, etc. and will be distributed to children at Christmas time. They are so simple, and just takes a fat quarter!
