If you are a follower of my instagram, you’ve probably followed my long quest to improve the lighting in my craft studio. First there was the replacement of the ceiling fan with a fixture with more wattage. Then, I replaced the new fixture’s bulbs with LED’s to increase its light output while creating a better color tone. And for years I’ve used a daylight lamp on my studio table as well. But even after all of that, in a room with a large window, I still was always struggling with the light.

A ridiculous portion of my creative time was spent dealing with light, or rather the lack of it. I often had to move my daylight lamp around to various positions on the table to get light where I needed it (trailing cords all over in the process and putting the lamp in the way in the middle of my working space). I spent a lot of time color balancing photos that I took of projects so they’d look right to post. After dark, I often had to adjust my work plans to switch to a task that I could accomplish in lower light. Sometimes after if got dark outside, I had to stop work entirely and wait until the next morning because I knew I couldn’t see well enough in the available light to match colors as well as I wanted.

And then I got the new Cricut Bright 360 table lamp!

My new lamp sits at the junction of my “L” shaped work table. Since the lamp’s arm spins a full circle, I can rotate the arm from this spot to reach all of my various work areas on the table.

I can extend it over my main desk area, where I make my projects. I can turn it so that it lights the area where my Cricut Maker sits, to assist with using that machine or taking pictures. Or, I can spin it towards the window to use as fill light when taking photos on the small photography spot there. The Cricut Bright 360 lamp has a slider that can dim the lamp or turn the light up, so I can get the just the perfect amount of light I need whether it’s bright light for my main desk area or just fill light in my photography spot.

The large LED head means I can light a large portion of my desk when I pull it up high. Here, I have the head raised up so I can light the area needed to work on a double-page 12x12 scrapbook layout. There’s even enough light that I can work after dark if I want now!

One thing the Cricut Bright 360 lamp can’t help with, however, is getting my chair back from a cat who likes to nap in it.

Pulled down toward the desktop, my Cricut lamp delivers more intensely focused light. This is great for helping to see detail in tasks like weeding or embroidery. I’m really looking forward to having fewer eyestrain headaches, and to wasting less material by making weeding errors!

It’s not just quantity of light that I’m slightly obsessed with….it’s also quality. Different light will make colors appear differently. With the color slider on the Cricut Bright 360, I can alter the color temperature of the light coming from my lamp to adjust for the quality of light at different times of day or from different light bulbs in a room fixture. This helps with things like color matching and with the ability to produce good colors in photos of projects.

Above, I’ve photographed the same paper samples on a progression of three color settings of my Cricut Bright 360 that progress from warm at the top to cool at the bottom. It really changes how the yellow, blue and white tones appear!

I even found a bonus use for my Cricut Bright 360 lamp! Because the lamp head pivots, it can be turned vertically as well as being kept flat to my desk. This turns it into a “ring light” perfect for zoom calls or video recording! The slider switches make it easy to adjust the color temperature and brightness of the light so I (and Ritzie kitty!) can look my best every time, with no need for a second lamp set up.

Light how I want it, where I want it? Now that’s a bright idea….a Cricut Bright 360 idea!

There’s been a lot of attention paid by early reviewers of these new Cricut machines to the new “smart” vinyl and iron-on materials. Like the similar materials available for the Cricut Joy machine, the new Smart Vinyl and Smart Iron-on materials for Cricut Maker and Cricut Explore cut without using a mat. This allows for the cutting of iron-on and vinyl strips up to 12 feet long (and with the accessory roll holder that holds rolls up to 75 feet long, you won’t have to reload as often).

So while it is true that Smart Vinyl and Smart Iron-On have a lot of really amazing possibilities (like banners and custom wallpaper!)….being a papercrafter, I immediately honed in on the other new Smart addition: Smart Paper Sticker Cardstock!  

Cricut Smart Paper Sticker Cardstock, like the other Cricut Smart Materials, doesn’t require a mat to cut. The 13” x 13” sheets can be slid right into the guides on the compatible machines (the new Cricut Maker 3 and Cricut Explore 3). The sticker cardstock currently comes in four color versions (white, black, bright, and pastels). After you cut your shape, you can peel it right off the backing and stick it on your project just like a sticker. No adhesive needed!

One other thing that I love about working with Smart materials - I hate, once my cut is done and I’m ready to start assembling my project, having to stop everything to wrestle with the protective sheet and get it back on the mat. Inevitably, it doesn’t go on straight or there’s bubbles…it’s just a pet peeve of mine and with the Smart Paper…I am blissfully mat free! It’s a little thing but it makes me happy.

I started out by making a Christmas layout of a favorite photo from Christmas day a few years ago. I’m something of a lazy scrapbooker, and I absolutely hate fussing with putting adhesive on small detailed items. So I almost certainly wouldn’t have even attempted this design without the Smart Paper Sticker Cardstock…all those teeny letters, that lacey border…yikes! But with the sticker cardstock, I just peeled them up and then stuck them down! Best of all, there was no worries about errant globs of liquid adhesive (and I didn’t go cross-eyed trying to line up my paper on my mat with my bifocals, either).

I combined the sticker cardstock elements with a collage of papers from Cricut’s “Mod & Merry” paper pack for the holidays. It combines a non-traditional pastel color scheme with some more traditional nutcracker elements - a great new spin on an old classic!

To add my journaling to the layout, I cut a 5/8” strip of the aqua paper. I wrote my journaling and then added the pearls and snipped it to length before gluing it down.

To get the 12" border in my layout design to fit within the cut area on the sticker paper, I just manually rotated it in the mat preview window so it sits diagonally on the paper. (Cricut Design Space seems to prefer to make elements straight on the mat and so instead of using a diagonal it defaulted to a larger paper size.) I could have filled the other side of the white space on that diagonal so that there was no wasted sticker paper, but I’m not that organized creating my projects!

The speed and convenience of using Cricut Smart Paper Sticker Cardstock is perfect for creating large multiples of items like holiday cards or party items - and with the new Cricut Maker, you can cut up to 2x faster than with the previous Maker machine to get your project done super fast! I used the sticker cardstock to create an elegant slimline Christmas card.

The simple design of this card uses only two borders and a sentiment, so it goes together in minutes! The tiny details on the border and the snowflakes would be tedious and headache inducing (at best) to adhere using liquid adhesive, but are super easy with sticker paper! You can make the assembly even faster by skipping the patterned paper layer and putting the sticker elements directly onto a solid color card base if you want.

Whew, looking at that list, it feels like that’s a lot of stuff, for what really was an easy card to make! But it’s just basically all my go-to tools (like my Distress Inks) and “stash” - like the Wildflower paper pad that I’ve had forever and have been using bit by bit.

The two new products that I made this card to play with are the Spring Shadows stamp set, and the Kitsch Flamingo Embossing Glaze. I just knew those two items would be perfect to use together! The embossing glaze provided a brilliant pop of color for the bunny, but allowed the text paper background to show through, preserving the vintage look.

And bonus, before the design was done, it turned out I got to spend some more time with the new Rustic Wilderness Distress ink color, too! I used both the regular Distress and the Distress Oxide of the Rustic Wilderness color to stamp some of the flower stems. The different ink formulations stamp as just slightly different colors, helping to give a more “natural” appearance to my “greenery” on the card.

I really wanted to use the Happy Easter sentiment from the Spring Shadows stamp set but couldn’t figure out how to make the long narrow sentiment work well in my design. It turned out that it fit just perfectly if I stamped one word and then the other as two lines inside one of the label stamps from the Field Notes set. It made the perfect little sentiment block! I will definitely be using these two stamp sets together this way again!

The “retro” on today’s layout is largely supplied by the brilliantly colored patterned paper from Paper Rose’s “Retro Vibe” collection. (If this looks familiar, it’s because I used another paper from the same collection for a recent Winnie the Pooh layout I made.) This collection is fabulous as a shortcut for making quick and easy retro style Disney layouts! The color palettes are so Disney!

The photo on this layout is really old (over twenty years old), and I don’t have the exact date or really any memories to go record with it. So I kept the layout really simple, with the photo as the major focus of the design. The patterned paper created the highlight as a huge photo mat. A narrower band of yellow (a lighter shade than the background paper) around the photo separated the photo from the busy pattern a bit. Finally, I inked the edges of the patterned paper to give it a faux drop shadow off of the yellow background.

The layout’s Minnie Mouse title is just easy letter stickers. So that the title didn’t appear to be hanging in mid-air, I added a stamped silver heart element next to it that connects it to the layout’s edge.

Because the pattern was so busy and the photo element was so big, I didn’t want to interfere much with the open space down the side of the layout. So I used tone-on-tone yellow cardstock for the small journaling strips. I only used one “embellishment” - a big XO stamped and heat embossed directly on the background.

Despite my love of genealogy, I also have a slightly contrary streak that makes me love using products for projects outside their intended uses. So when I saw this product line I focused more on the color scheme and the beautiful vintage elements than the theme. I knew it would be perfect for some of my Biltmore pictures!

It’s not often that I mat a photo in a dark color. Usually I mat a photo in a light color to help brighten it and set it off from the background. But this photo had a very light area (the fireplace) and was on a light background. So I went for a darker color than normal to differentiate from those two lighter areas.

Even with the mat, this 4x6 photo looked a bit lost on the page compared to the large floral designs. That gave me an excuse to play with some of the other beautiful patterned papers in this collection for some color blocking to increase the visual weight of the photo!

Eagle eyes might notice that top block says “we are family”, which doesn’t fit the theme of the layout. Hold on, I’m going to fix that in the next step!

I loved the look of the phrase on the small floral block, so I just replaced it with one from my own Nally Studios set of print & cut Travel Memories phrase stickers that are available on Etsy!

And a layout about a place as grand as Biltmore really needs some bling, so these gold foil Thickers for the title were the perfect way to bring it. Extending it out across the block onto the background helped visually connect the photo block to the design on both edges of the paper.

The white space at the bottom was a great spot to put my journaling. I normally am too nervous to write directly on my background in case I screw it up, but I really though it was the best place for it this time so I took a deep breath and did it!

I used cardstock to make the phrase stickers for the date and place, but you can also use the extra blank strip on the Travel Memories printable for it if you plan ahead when making them!

Project Life layouts are a great way to use up random bits of product that are leftover from bigger projects! Even when I’m using a pre-designed card, I almost never use one without modifying it in some way.

On the left page shown above, all of the cards are altered - even ones that aren’t obvious. My favorite alteration is to add a text element. Besides the obvious element of the title, the green “right here” banner, the “love this place” strip, the date area and quote strip layered elements are all elements that I added.

(And did you see that I stuck to my plan of having map prints on each page in this album, with the map print card?)

The card above looked a little too simple and spare for this album. So I added a coordinating text sticker from the Simple Vintage Traveler collection across the top. It turns up the vintage style of the card, and just adds some nice detail.

I loved the style of the card below, but the design had a problem: the “our holiday” text. Since this was a solo trip, it didn’t work. But that was easily fixed by simply adding another "layer” to the collage of elements in that corner of the card. The little vintage stamp element added some French theming and covered the text I didn’t like. Double win! I also added a “world traveler” banner to fill some empty space at the bottom of the card after my journaling was done.

Because of all the historic sites I saw, this layout has a lot of journaling on it. I like to write about the background of the things I’ve seen, to help me remember the significance of what I saw. With all of the journaling, there wasn’t any room for purely decorative cards, so I chose my journaling cards carefully!

I love playing with all my little pieces on a layout like this…sometimes the hardest part is knowing when to stop, so my design doesn’t become too cluttered!

This t-shirt was a last-minute Christmas stocking gift I whipped together for my daughter. It took barely over an hour to make start to finish, including cutting, weeding, and ironing!

When I selected my colors for the design, I decided to use gold for the layer that has the large center flower on it. But there isn’t just a single gold option in the Cricut iron-on range. There’s Gold in Everyday Iron-On (which is more matte), Foil, Glitter…and I’m probably missing some too. How do you know which gold to choose when making an iron-on project?

The first consideration is layering, because foil and glitter can’t have something else layered on top of them. That wasn’t a concern for me so I had to choose based on other criteria. I ultimately chose the Everyday Iron-On based largely on appearance. I liked how the more matte finish didn’t overwhelm the pink and green but still had a bit of a luxury feel. I thought that the foil and glitter, as beautiful as they are, were just a bit too much for this particular project. The bonus of selecting the Everyday Iron-On is that (in my experience) the Everyday Iron-On metallics are the most durable of the metallic iron-ons. If my daughter decides this is one of her favorite t-shirts, this will get washed every few days, so durability is no small consideration!

I chose the green as my first layer of iron-on to adhere, because it was the color around most of the edge of the design. That made it easier to line it up to center it, since I could see where the edges were.

After the first layer, I just carefully aligned each of the next colors into the open spaces and then pressed them down.

I gave it as a Christmas stocking stuffer, but this t-shirt makes a wonderful gift for Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, or a birthday for someone special! Who will you give it to?

When I travel to places like Paris, I always come home with loads of photos of amazing art. But doing justice to an iconic work of art on a scrapbook page can be an intimidating proposition! This photo of Rodin’s “Thinker” statue at the Musee Rodin in Paris was extra challenging because it was a dull gray rainy winter day when I visited the museum. To solve this, I reached for a paper pack that has become a staple for me lately - and my favorite layering technique.

I always like to establish a “base” of sorts to build off of when creating my layers. For this layout, it consisted of the matted photo, a journaling card, and an ephemera card. I chose white for the photo mat because it brightened up the gray photo, and it played off the contrast with the white writing on the background paper. (As it turned out, I ended up covering up almost all of that writing with other elements, but that’s the creative process - you never know where it will take you!)

The blue color in the background paper highlights the blue-green of the statute, and the kraft colored ephemera highlights the stone base and the building. Even though it doesn’t match exactly, the effect is harmonious.

I am terrible at getting alphabet stickers lined up straight, but it drives me crazy if they aren’t just right. Sticking down a strip of washi tape temporarily is a cheat that I started using recently to provide a base to line the stickers up on. When I’m done, I can just carefully peel it up. As long as I don’t stick it down too hard, it comes up without a problem, and my letters are straighter, which makes me happy!

The black title, black label maker tape, black thread, and the black brad all are intended to coordinate with the black design in the background paper. It also ties these elements to the darker areas of the statue, which appear black.

I’m kind of obsessed with using groups or triangles of three on my layouts. The two punched circles (punched from a Tim Holtz journal card) spread around the layout create a visual triangle with the quote tag embellishment. They also spread a bit of the kraft color around the layout. And for the final finishing touch, I added some printable journaling stickers from my Nally Studios store on Etsy that I printed and then cut on my Cricut Maker!

I knew my photo should be at the center of the color rays, as if they explode out from it. I started by laying my title (cut on my Cricut) and my matted photo on the full sheet of paper. But I quickly realized that much color was a bit too busy for my taste.

The solution was a new background - Bazzill Blackberry Swirl smooth cardstock - and cutting down the Retro Vibes paper to serve as an oversized mat for the photo. To add interest I didn’t make the borders on sides of the photo equal. I took 1/2” off the right side of the paper, 1.5” off the left, and 1/5” off the top. Before gluing the paper down, I inked the edges with the cobalt ink to give it a more finished look.

Because the patterned paper is so bright and busy, it does most of the work on the design and the layout doesn’t need much more embellishment. The lazy scrapbooker in me likes that!

I added a 1/4” strip of red cardstock to help highlight the title a bit. The journaling card was just cut from the same kraft cardstock as the photo mat, and then edged with the binding punch. I used my LetterMate to draw faint lines for my journaling. These came off easily after I was done writing with my Tri-Tip eraser, a go-to tool that I use for removing journaling lines, adhesive smudges, and all sorts of things!

I love putting small embellishment clusters like this on my layouts as a little extra touch of detail. I always build them from the larger items (buttons) to the smallest (seed beads). I place the items to get them how I want, and then move them a few at a time for gluing. The PPA Matte glue is my go-to adhesive for these sorts of items. It’s thick enough to stay where I put it, but still has an open time that gives me the ability to get things where I want them. And since it dries matte and clear, you can’t tell it is there when it is dry!

This finished layout was super quick and is such a precious memory of my little girl! She’s about to turn 18, is as tall as I am, and it’s hard to believe that she was ever this teeny adorable little thing that I could pick up!

So let’s take a look at some different ways to store your craft vinyl and iron-on rolls!

Stash it in a Drawer Cart

A drawer cart isn’t just a great way to store your craft vinyl - it’s also a great place to put your machine to create an entire Cricut workstation! Carts like this 12 drawer Whitmor cart will hold your vinyl, machine accessories and tools, and your machine in one convenient package. As with other drawer storage solutions for vinyl, though, you may have to spend some time digging to find the roll you need.

For a sturdier, more furniture style cart, the Ikea Alex drawer cart makes a great Cricut workstation, complete with vinyl storage. We’ve had two of these units in our home for years.. One is used as a printer workstation, and the other functions as a stamping storage unit in my studio. The deeper bottom three drawers of the Ikea Alex drawer cart will hold two layers of Cricut vinyl or iron-on rolls.

Hang It On The Wall

Going vertical is always a great way to find storage space, and there are several options for storing your vinyl rolls right on the wall (without using a shelving unit).

This ArtBin rack holds a dozen standard vinyl rolls on wall - or on your worktable. (This is a similar concept to how crafters have been hacking the Ikea Variera to create vinyl storage.) ArtBin also sells a three pack of these units that can be connected together into a circular tower unit for tabletop storage that holds 36 vinyl rolls.

If you’ve got pegboard (or space to install some), this might be the storage solution of your dreams! Just slide your rolls of vinyl onto pegboard hooks - the longer, the better, like these 8” hooks - and you’ll be able to see your entire selection. Make your rolls as dense or as spaced out as you’d like!

Put it in a Cube

Thirteen inch cube shelves like the Ikea Kallax units are the go-to storage in many craft rooms, and they can handle your vinyl rolls, too! There’s plenty of different options with these cubes for how to store your vinyl and iron-on rolls.

The simplest way is to just stack the rolls on their sides on the shelves. I currently have my vinyl stored this way in a non-cube shelving unit. It’s efficient but can be difficult to get things in and out and to see what I have (especially when it is jam packed).

For a little more separation of your rolls while stacked, you can insert dividers in your cubes. Ikea makes one that creates nine slots (intended for wine bottles) for their Kallax units or hit up Etsy to find custom ones like this 25 slot cube divider especially for vinyl rolls! If you’d prefer shelves, Stamp -n- Storage makes an insert that has 6 shelves for holding up to 36 rolls of vinyl.

If you’d like to be able to pull that jumble of rolls out onto your work surface to rummage in, a basket or bin might be the perfect solution. Ikea, Target, and Amazon (among others) sell stylish options for cube bins that range from baskets made with natural materials to cheerful fabric designs like these turquoise print bins. To be able to best see your vinyl selection, stand the rolls in the bin instead of laying them down.

Hang it on the Back of a Door

Hanging your vinyl on the back of a door is a simple and affordable way to organize your rolls of vinyl - and one that doesn’t take much space, either. It’s also one of the only methods that keeps it all very visible, so you can really lay eyes on your entire selection. This is great if you are a very visual person.

The least expensive way to do it is an over the door shoe organizer with clear pockets, similar to the one that I used a few years ago to organize my vinyl. The pockets on the one I had were a bit floppy, so you can see in the photo that I used clothes pins to put a pleat in them and clip them tighter around my vinyl rolls.

For a few more dollars (on sale), you can get an over the door hanger at Michaels that is especially designed to hold craft vinyl rolls. Their design from house brand Simply Tidy stores vinyl rolls horizontally, and holds an amazing 128 rolls (four each in 32 pockets). The only downside is that since it holds the rolls horizontally, it will be difficult to use one side of the organizer if your door is right in a corner.

Both of these behind the door options, of course, could also be hung on an open wall space using your own wall anchors instead of the included over door hooks.

Keep it on your Table

Would you like to keep your vinyl (or at least some of it) right within arm’s reach on your desk by your machine? There’s several options available to do just that!

For a tabletop option that is also portable, this vinyl organizer by Simply Tidy at Michaels holds 20 standard rolls of vinyl. The shelves are adjustable so, if you like to buy bulk vinyl rolls, you can change your organizer to accommodate them.

If you don’t care about portability of your vinyl container, why not take this rotating unit for a spin? In only a 15” by 15” area, the Simply Tidy Vinyl Roll Rotating Carousel stores 36 standard vinyl rolls, all of them with with their color or design visible!

Store it on a Shelf

Just like with cube shelves, baskets are a great way to store craft vinyl rolls on any kind of shelf or ledge. And unlike some more functional storage options, they can have the benefit of being decorative and matching your room’s decor. They are also easily repurposed if you decide to move your vinyl to another storage system. This basket was purchased years ago at Michaels and has held many different things over its life in my studio before it began holding my metallic Cricut iron-on vinyl rolls!

If you’d like to subdivide your vinyl a bit more on your shelves, check out the Vinyl Roll Storage Trays by Totally Tiffany. These are similar to the vertical paper files many scrapbookers use, but they are sized to perfectly hold six standard rolls of vinyl in a single row.

I love these Cream/Gold insert cards - they are my absolute favorite! It’s a versatile color combination that adds a touch of elegance to a variety of occasions - weddings, Christmas, anniversaries, birthdays, Valentine’s Day, and of course New Year’s!

Making this card on the Cricut Joy is as simple as popping the cream card blank onto the card mat, putting the pen into the machine’s tool slot, and then starting your cut! Swap the blade for the pen when Design Space tells you to and let it finish cutting. Then when it is done, just peel the card up off the card mat, slide the insert into the corner slots, and the card is complete. Less than 5 minutes from start to finish!

I leave my Cricut Joy and my insert cards and pens sitting right within reach of my studio chair, precisely so it’s easy to make quick projects like this when I need them!

This new series has started with a very simple purpose- to reclaim my love of reading. When I was younger, I was a voracious reader. In high school, the librarians I was a teacher’s aide for looked the other way while I blew through the limit on books to check out. They knew they’d all be back, fully read, before they were due. I must have read my way through the school’s entire history and biography section, along with a fair share of its other non-fiction sections as well. My reading habit got expensive when I got married and moved to a house that was barely a half mile from a Barnes & Noble!

Then, I suffered a brain injury and my eyes aged into the need for bifocals…between the two, reading books became very challenging. I could no longer fly through pages, devour entire books practically in a single sitting. In frustration, I transferred my attention elsewhere.

But I still love books, and have a thirst for exploring the world through them. So I have committed, after years of barely reading, to a goal of reading at least one book per month, which I’ll share here with you.

The first book I have chosen for this project is Threads of Life.

The book is authored by Clare Hunter, a Scottish curator and community textile artist. Examples from her personal experiences in those fields are woven into the book alongside the well-researched historical narratives.

Threads of Life combines two of my favorite things between its covers: sewing and history. When we think about sewing and its role in history, most of us probably stop at thinking about things like the intricate court costumes in Versailles-era France, or genteel ladies in Jane Austen’s time doing needlework to pass the time. But Hunter invites us to think about sewing as more than just practical by writing about embroidered court banners as displays of royal power, WWII prisoners using quilting and embroidery as a form of resistance, Hmong stitching story cloths as a way of preserving their cultural identity, soldiers stitching for rehabilitation, the AIDS quilt, and so much more. Pulling together various examples from ancient times to modern times, Hunter makes a compelling (and fascinating) case that sewing and embroidery are not just survival skills but a crucial part of the language and movement of history and culture.

Some of the stories Hunter writes about will likely be familiar to readers (such as the AIDS quilt) but doubtless many others will not (such as the well-researched history of Mary, Queen of Scot’s use of her personal embroidery as a political tool in her failed attempt to save herself from execution by her sister Elizabeth I of England). Overall, though, Threads of Life is an empowering read that will make any embroidery or sewing enthusiast feel connected to the heritage and power of needle and thread.

The 2021 dual colors of the year duplicates a similar move that Pantone made for its 2016 color of the year. The pairing that year was Rose Quartz (a pink) and Serenity (a blue).

Pantone explained its selection of dual colors as reflecting the inability of a single color to embody the current world reality:

“The selection of two independent colors highlight how different elements come together to express a message of strength and hopefulness that is both enduring and uplifting, conveying the idea that it’s not about one color or one person, it’s about more than one. The union of an enduring Ultimate Gray with the vibrant yellow Illuminating expresses a message of positivity supported by fortitude,” said Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute. “Practical and rock solid but at the same time warming and optimistic, this is a color combination that gives us resilience and hope. We need to feel encouraged and uplifted, this is essential to the human spirit.”

Let’s look at the colors one at a time!

Illuminating

It’s not too surprising to see a yellow tone in Pantone’s Color of the Year palette for 2021, since yellow has been quite a trendy shade in recent seasons. I was a bit surprised that the tone selected was a more lemon-y tone. Based on what I’ve been seeing in products, I was expecting a color of yellow more on the mustard side. However, this more lemon color coordinates better with gray and since Pantone is creating a set for color of the year, that may have been a factor in the selection of the tone.

Illuminating is described by Pantone as “energetic”, “warming” and “optimistic”, among other positive terms. It’s a forward-looking color, embodying the dream of a better life post-Covid. From a design standpoint in papercrafts, it’s a fairly widely used tone already. Yellow tones similar to illuminating commonly appear in more brightly colored “graphic” style lines, and in child-themed lines.

Ultimate Gray

The uncertainty of covid has companies looking for safety - and that includes retreating to the safety of time-tested classics in their products. Abandoning last year’s navy-as-a-neutral, fashion turned instead to gray (eclipsed only by black) as an almost ubiquitous neutral on the runways for spring/summer 2021.

Pantone describes Ultimate Gray as “solid” as well as having “fortitude” and “endurance” in their announcement. This color reflects the weight of the current covid challenges on the mood of designers and consumers.

Will scrapbooking follow the turn to gray as the dominant neutral ? I doubt it. But we may seem more incorporation of gray in patterns and embellishments, as an accent or base color. But I doubt we’ll see gray become a a neutral backdrop like kraft is routinely used for.

What are the Valentine’s Day 2021 scrapbook paper trends?

There’s barely over a half-dozen Valentine’s Day collections announced for 2021, so with a group that small it’s hard to really pin point any large trends. However, a few things stick out.

The Christmas trend of red and black continues into Valentine’s Day, with several companies incorporating this definitely non-traditional color combo into their lines. Echo Park used this Rifle Paper-inspired trend last year, but this year Echo Park was also joined by Photo Play Paper and Reminisce (albeit in a very non-traditional line).

Other than that, just like at Christmas, everyone has basically played it safe and stuck close to their signature style. Most of these lines could be easily identified as belonging to the manufacturer that produced them without seeing the label.

Creating this gardening t-shirt project is a super quick project! I chose a heathered gray for the t-shirt because heathered colors are great for getting dirty. They don’t show small stains as easily. And the bright yellow and green apple (which is a very yellow shade of green) pop off the gray background.

To start, use the Cricut Design Space file in the supply list to cut the iron-on pieces. Don’t forget to mirror your design before cutting it! Then use your weeding tools to remove the waste pieces from the transfer sheet.

To get the different pieces of this design perfectly arranged, I grabbed my favorite iron-on cheat: Cricut Heat Resistant Tape! Before I even turned on my Easy Press, I carefully laid out all my pieces on my shirt. Then I marked the corners of the where the backing lay with tape. Then to get them perfectly aligned while ironing, I just had to lay them back into the tape corners!

This t-shirt makes a great gift for the gardener in your life! It can even be rolled up to make a fun stocking stuffer!

I was so excited when I saw that the new Distress color from Tim Holtz was a deep, true green! I’ve craved a “hunter” type green in my Distress palette for awhile. All of the other greens in the Distress palette are noticeably blue or yellow tints of green. The new shade Rustic Wilderness is noticeably neither (until you stamp the Oxide on a dark surface - more on that in a moment). It sits right in the middle between the yellow and blue greens, and its depth is so rich.

Despite its name of “Rustic Wilderness”, my first thought is that this new color would be excellent to use for creating elegant historic patterns. I tried out that theory on the background of this card with Tim’s “Fragments” stamp set.

The upper left above is the regular Distress Ink, and the lower right is Distress Oxide. Although a slight difference in texture is visible, the color of both versions of the ink appears essentially the same on this cream colored cardstock.

Things got a bit more interesting when I stamped the Distress and Oxide versions on a kraft background, however. The regular Distress takes on the brown background and appears much darker than it did stamped on the brighter cream. The Oxide, however, changed drastically! It became very blue (even though the original color didn’t appear to have a blue tint) and much brighter than the original Rustic Wilderness color.

Combining the tag and the tapestry stamped background together created a card design that looked like it was created from a rainbow of inks. In fact it was all the same color, in two different ink formulations.

Of course, I couldn’t just leave that tag hole empty when I have so much beautiful ribbon sitting around! And I added some stitching around the edge for some more detail as well.

For the final touches, I stamped a sentiment label using the Simple Sayings stamp set. I cut it out by hand before gluing it down. Then I put a bit more stitching around the label for more texture, and topped it with some buttons, which are my go-to embellishment!

Rustic Wilderness is a versatile color that I’m sure will rapidly become one of the most-used colors in my Distress palette. I look forward to using it again and again!

You’ll need to ensure you have both cardstock (minimum 80 lbs) and butcher paper to use as part of your pressing stack. I used some generic craft chain store white cardstock for my cardstock. A starting quantity of butcher paper came in the box with the ink sheets, but you might want to have a roll on hand in case you find it isn’t enough.

Cutting Infusible Ink Transfer Sheets is pretty much the same as cutting iron-on vinyl for t-shirts and other projects. The design has to be mirrored, kiss cut, and then weeded. On the Cricut Joy, Ink Transfer Sheets are cut by putting them carrier side down on the Joy’s green mat and loading them into the machine the same way things are cut on the Cricut Maker.

Below is an example of what not to do when cutting your Infusible Ink Transfer Sheets on your Cricut Joy…I was having so much fun playing with my little mini green mat and Cricut Joy that I totally spaced and put the Infusible Ink sheet ink side DOWN on the mat. Major dope moment…I haven’t made that mistake with any iron-on in years, since way back when I was a rookie Cricut-er!

Although cutting Infusible Ink is a pretty familiar process to iron-on vinyl users, ironing it onto the coasters is a very different process. The Infusible Ink requires much more heat and time, and the stack of layers you press is in a different order than you might be used to with iron-on vinyl.

The Infusible Ink was also a bit more time-consuming than doing regular iron-on. This is because in addition to the longer pressing time you also have to wait to peel it until it is cool. I found in my trials that it was best to wait to move it off of the Easy Press mat until it was ready to peel, which meant I couldn’t start my next piece until it was cool enough to peel. It did cool way faster than I expected however, even during a hot Florida summer. And if you have enough space and multiple Easy Press Mats, you could switch back and forth between the two - press on one while the other one cools.

All of that said, however, as long as you carefully follow the instructions in the Cricut Heat Guide, it is very easy to get beautiful results!

One last thing - Please take seriously the Cricut advisory to work in a well-ventilated area with this material!

The finished ceramic coasters make the perfect addition to my teenaged daughter’s bedroom, and will hopefully protect her new bedside table from getting water rings on it!

These are a bright spot of color and an oh-so-useful gift for a teenager or college kid! Or just make them for yourself to perk up a gray winter day! I look forward to seeing who you will share them with!

If you saw my Christmas Cookies layout earlier this week, you might recognize the green background on the card’s sentiment strip. That’s because the sentiment is part of the tear strip (the label that has the company and design name on it) from the bottom of the Vintage Artistry Noel Aquifolium paper that I used for its background. All of the 49 and Market paper designs have a beautiful coordinating design on the reverse side of the strip that can be used as a design element. I love this extra touch of detail (and value). As soon as I cut the strip off the Aquifolium paper, I knew I had to make cards with these beautiful sentiment strips so they didn’t go to waste!

Assembling this card was so fast (even compared to my normal fast cards). I cut the two pieces of patterned paper and inked the edges (Antique Linen for the light pattern and Pine Needle for the green). I trimmed the sentiment to length and inked it with Peeled Paint. Then I put the red rub-on design onto the card front, and glued the sentiment strip over it. For the upper corner I tore some tissue tape strips and stuck them down. Then I used the brad to attach the metal token through the light patterned paper.

Once all that was done, I attached the two layers of paper together (so the back of the brad was hidden between them). And attached the completed card front to a card base. I used a pre-made one but you can make your own easily with half of a piece of letter sized cardstock, folded in half.

To finish, I used my favorite PPA Matte liquid glue to attach the nail heads. I always like, if possible, to leave things like this with liquid glue until the very end. That way I do not have to worry about dislodging things handling the card while working on other parts before the glue is dry. I just glue and set the finished card aside to dry.

I was so excited to try this beautiful vintage Christmas look from the Vintage Artistry line by Katie Pertiet from 49 and Market!

I started my layout with these two photos - one showing my mom teaching my daughter to make the cookies, and one showing them ready to go in the oven. The Vintage Artistry paper has a stitched outline block in the center that would be perfect for the main photo, but it left me with no good place to put the cookie photo. So I offset it above.

Rub-ons are getting trendy again, and I couldn’t resist ordering these ones! They are similar to the digital brush designs that Vintage Artistry designer Katie Pertiet does that I love, so I could just had to have some of that look for my paper scrapbooks too!

This was my first time using 49 and Market rub-ons and like everything else they produce, they are fabulous. The rub-ons go on easily and perfectly. The finish on the rub-ons is nice and matte. Once they are in place, the rub-ons look like they are part of the paper! Even running a finger over this one I can barely tell where the paper stops and the rub-on starts.

To provide a title and some embellishment, I added a kraft paper block next. I distressed it with some Picket Fence Distress Ink, so it matched the background paper better. The Christmas tree stamp is from the Vintage Artistry Noel stamp set and embossed in clear to give it dimension. The title is embossed with Red Tinsel because if you can’t use sparkle at Christmas, when can you?

I try to always add journaling to my layouts and the big open area at the bottom seemed like a good choice. Instead of making a big heavy block, I made 3/8” wide strips to write my journaling on. (Writing on strips is also a cheater way to get my lines straight without having to get out a pencil and ruler!)

For a final touch, I added some more bling! I left room when writing my journaling for some little pearls (sequins would have worked too). And I scattered white and silver seed beads around the tree like falling snow. And a cluster of red and green buttons accents the title and pulls together the red and green theme!
