Birthday Scrapbooking Tips

As the mother of 4 little ones I have lots of practice documenting birthdays. Here are some of my best suggestions for birthday scrapbooking.

• Basic pen and paper are key to my process. I keep notes of the party preparations and who's coming. I usually keep that in my planner.
• Delegate someone else to take photos during the party. This allows you time to manage the party.
• Choose the tallest relative to take pictures and record the happy birthday cake moment.
• Try to get detail shots and group photos from the event.
• Most people don't struggle with too few photos from a birthday party. Typically we have way to many! This article will help you organize those birthday pics.
• One more tool to help you organize photos is the Auto Curate feature in Photoshop Elements Organizer! Learn how here.

• Another great resource is templates with lots of photo spots. I love Katie the Creative Lady's templates. Or you can useLaurie Callison's Click or Drag templates from our store.
• If your photos are on your phone you may consider using the Project Life App. It's an easy way to get a great collection of photos on one page.

Have you ever looked in your downloads folder to see oodles of zip files containing who-knows-what gorgeous scrapbooking supplies?

Here's the workflow I use to keep my supplies organized:

1. Download and unzip them all in one step into my Digi folder (without doing anything more)
2. PSE Organizer imports them automatically with the watched folders feature

4. Tag specific items you commonly search for
5. Use the advanced search features to find the supplies you need

Scrap Happy Show Notes

One of my favorite things about scrapbooking is the community. I don't hang around with many scrapbookers in my day to day life, which is why I love online communities. Scrap Happy is one of those communities that makes my scrapbooking better.

• Scrap Happy is membership group that is more like a family. Connect together online with others over a shared love of scrapbooking.
• Scrap Happy can help motivate you to find the time to get your scrapbooking done and your stories told.
• There are 3 yearly events that help you actually get pages done. Layout a Day, or LOAD, can help you get so much of your scrapbooking done for the year.
• A community of people that supports you and comments on your layouts makes you feel great about creating. It can be so motivating!

• Organizing for Absolute Beginners has 8 modules and it takes you through everything from understanding how Organizer works, to getting your photos printed or doing a slide show.
• The class has high quality videos that show you exactly what to do.
• If you've always put of organizing your photos you are actually in luck! It will be easier to start now that technology has finally count up.
• You are able to customize how your photos are stored on your hard drive. Create folders that make sense to you and how you organize.
• In this class we'll cover automated organizing. Organizer monitors the new files that you have imported. You can automate the downloads with Photo Downloader or you can have it watch the folders for new photos.
• Are you familiar with Face Recognition? It is awesome! PSE is one of the first products that implemented Face Recognition. You can use it along with your contacts and FB friends list. It makes it so easy to tag people.

Cloud Backup Show Notes

What does a cloud back up do? They take your files from your computer, upload them as encrypted files over the internet, and store them in their own secure servers. They also have backups, so that if anything goes wrong on your end, your data is protected. One benefit of an online backup service is that it's fully automated.

• In the Organizer Adobe has paid attention to how people like to organize. They like to know who is in the photo, where it was taken, and what they were doing.
  • Face Recognition is now faster, and more user-friendly.
  • Places View is also improved. With so many cell phone photos the GPS location is included in the meta data of those photos. That data is automatically added to the map in Places View
  • The Events Room using a sorting algorithm that looks for clusters of photos that were taken around the same date and time. That helps you quickly create an event inside the organizer.
• Photoshop Elements Editor has a diverse audience, as far as skill set goes. To address this PSE has the Expert Mode, Guided Edit Mode, and the Quick Edit Mode.
  • In Quick Edit Mode you can apply instant effects to your photos. Similar to Instagram. With Smart Looks the photo is analyzed and you get the top 5 effects that will look best with that particular photo.
  • In Guided Edit Mode they added 2 new edits. First one is Resize. This will allow you to resize for printing or resize for the web. The second one is Speed which makes it really easy to add a motion blur to your photo.
  • In Expert Mode several new features were added. One really popular one is the Haze Remover. The moisture in the air is captured and can become hazy in the distance. This feature can determine which parts of the photo are hazy and which parts are not, and removes the haze. Shake reduction was also added. This feature will help turn your shaky selfie into a steady shot.

The key to scrapping fast is to remove as many decisions as you can from the process. The fewer decisions you have to make, the easier it is to get things done.

On the flip side of that, if you aren't in to getting things done quickly Calvinball is still for you. After just a few days it's like this treasure trove of ideas and people spurring you on. So even if you don't want to complete a large number of pages in a month there is still a benefit from Calvinball.

Aside from being an elementary teacher, wife, and mom to two grown sons, Lisa is a passionate, lifelong crafter. In 1999, she met and fell in love with scrapbooking, and she’s been doing it in one form or another ever since. In 2008, she began teaching scrapbooking classes at local crops and eventually joined the design team at her local scrapbook store, where she still enjoys the privilege of playing with paper and sharing her creations with others. • Photoshop Elements Editor has a diverse audience, as far as skill set goes. To address this PSE has the Expert Mode, Guided Edit Mode, and the Quick Edit Mode.
  • In Quick Edit Mode you can apply instant effects to your photos. Similar to Instagram. With Smart Looks the photo is analyzed and you get the top 5 effects that will look best with that particular photo.
  • In Guided Edit Mode they added 2 new edits. First one is Resize. This will allow you to resize for printing or resize for the web. The second one is Speed which makes it really easy to add a motion blur to your photo.
  • In Expert Mode several new features were added. One really popular one is the Haze Remover. The moisture in the air is captured and can become hazy in the distance. This feature can determine which parts of the photo are hazy and which parts are not, and removes the haze. Shake reduction was also added. This feature will help turn your shaky selfie into a steady shot.
• The Refine Selection Brush has also been improved. It's difficult is to get close selections around the edge of people, pets, etc. This new feature allows you to just paint around your selection and the tool will go in and find the fine detail of hair, fuzzy edges, etc and create a detailed edge selection.

Carole has been an avid PaintShop Pro user for over 10 years and has taught digital scrapbooking online and in-person to hundreds of users. What is PaintShop Pro?

Just a few weeks ago, Paintshop Pro version X8 was released. Here are a few of the new features:

• Text wrapping - allows you to keep your text inside a shape
• Magic move - magic fill was added last year, this year magic move allows you to make a selection and move it and fill in the spot on the background
• Layer palette search - you can search for a layer name and it will highlight those layers.
• Layer palette collapse/expand - you can collapse or expand in groups with one button.
• Merge features - merge visible layers into one layer with one click or merge selected layers. You can also merge layers onto their own layer.
• Brush sizes - now 3000 pixels
• Fixed selection or fixed ratio - allows you to select items and they will always be the same size
• Real time gradient adjustment - adjusts the gradient live on your screen as you make changes
• Batch process - much more intuitive
• Plus easier ways to save, and other workflow details

Metadata: Your Gift to the Future

Adding Descriptions (metadata) to Digital Photographs. Your Gift to the Future.

Our digital photographs are meaningful, they document our fleeting memories. However, with the advent of digital photography we now create far more photos than we ever did in the past. Our digital photo collections are becoming larger and it’s hard to find specific images. If your digital images  are difficult for you to manage and navigate, how will your loved ones be able to easily access them in the future?

Meta data is information about the digital photo file itself. Adding descriptions and tags (metadata) makes is much easier and faster to organize and search your digital photo collections. You have to proceed with caution because many social media websites, photo websites and software applications do not embed the metadata directly into the image file itself, but into a “sidecar” that is only attached with the image while it’s being used by that specific application. Learning how to imbed metadata directly into the image file itself ensures that the information will always be there.

Some software applications and photo sharing sites do not follow the “Photo Metadata Standard” which means your metadata may get lost between applications. Learn which applications you should be using to ensure that your metadata always travels with your image.

As scrapbookers we often tell everyone else's stories but don't scrap about ourselves. Our reasons may be that we don't like pictures of ourselves, or we are the ones behind the camera. Yet our reasons can become excuses. Your stories are important too!

In today's episode of the Scrapbook Inspiration Podcast I'm joined by 6 fabulous ladies to talk about the different software programs out there for you to work with. Let's meet this week's guests!

Carole Asselin (Cassel) from Scrapbook Campus has been an avid PaintShop Pro user for over 10 years and has taught digital scrapbooking online and in-person to hundreds of users. Over the years, she has written hundreds of tutorials and since opening the Scrapbook Campus two years ago, she has converted the plain written tutorials into multimedia ones, including videos and detailed guidebooks. When time allows, Carole also likes to create scrapbook pages but is more interested by the technical aspect of digital scrapbooking.

Since 2007, scrappers Mary Moseley and Jackie Lyals from Be Photo Wise have been teaching people the why’s and how’s of getting their printed photos and digital images and videos organized, backed up and accessible so that they can be displayed for family and friends to see and enjoy.

Mary and Jackie are certified photo organizers, members of the Association of Personal Photo Organizers and founding members of the Save Your Photos Day Alliance (www.saveyourphotos.org) which gives them all the tools and expertise to guide and inspire you to get organized, preserve and creatively share and celebrate your treasured memories.

Karen Fitting from Photos Kept Alive calls herself a digi-scrapbooker but has been enjoying hybrid projects combining digital and traditional styles. At Photos Kept Alive she shares her crafty projects as well as helps her customers with “all things photos” – including video transfer, scanning, scrapbooking and weekend events. What she loves most is listening to the stories that go with the pictures. Karen lives in Northern California with her husband and Cocker Spaniel-child.

Tameka Bond is one of the founding members of pixels2Pages, which is the preferred digital training site and resource for Panstoria's Artisan and Historian software users. The pixels2Pages website will celebrate its fifth anniversary on April 7, 2015. Though her duties at pixels2Pages are a full-time job, she also have a full-time day job as a paralegal. Tameka is a wife and mother of three children ages 10,13, and 17. They are the inspiration behind her designs, however being from New York City, she find that her surroundings play a big role in her designs as well. Tameka considers herself a tra-digital scrapbooker and hybrid crafter as she combines digital and traditional designs in her albums and other crafting projects. Whatever she crafts, Artisan software is in the mix.

Blayne White from Scrap Room Software has been an entrepreneur for the past 20 years, managing every aspect of an award winning professional photography studio with her husband, Bryan. After handling the studio’s transition from film to digital and hearing customer’s struggles with their own personal digital photos for several years, Blayne decided to follow her passion for photos and scrapbooking to create an answer to the digital dilemma for photo enthusiasts - ScrapRoom Software. ScrapRoom combines the organization of photos, stories, digital elements and the ability to create digital projects into one software, easy enough for even the beginning digital photographer or scrapbooker. ScrapRoom helps users get their stories and photos off their devices and back into their lives. Mac and PC.

Doris & Celeste's Take Away Tips

The key to scrapping fast is to remove as many decisions as you can from the process. The fewer decisions you have to make, the easier it is to get things done.

On the flip side of that, if you aren't in to getting things done quickly Calvinball is still for you. After just a few days it's like this treasure trove of ideas and people spurring you on. So even if you don't want to complete a large number of pages in a month there is still a benefit from Calvinball.

Sometimes you have to just get over whatever mental blocks you have. Posting in an online group can help keep you accountable and also give you ideas. That way you can get over the block, get the project done, and celebrate!

This is me. I’m pretty ordinary. I love cooking, photography, home, and making. Endlessly making. My childhood is filled with memories of me constantly being on the move or “bored”. My mom’s solution was getting me into just about any crafty endeavor she came across – you name it, I learned it. Calligraphy, beading, crochet, macrame, cross stitch, knitting, and sketching all succumbed to my eager fingers. I still love so many of them today.

Leah has worked in the scrapbooking industry with several leading companies for the past five years. As a part of that work, she has provided creative  samples and DIY’s for trade shows,  company blogs, catalogs, and television spots. Her scrapbooking work has been published in several industry print magazines and books, including MemoryMakers, Scrapbook Trends, Cards, and Mini Albums, including an “Award Winning Style” feature in Scrapbook Trends, and Everyday Storyteller 2. Her papercrafting designs and goods can be found on Etsy.

Leah's Take Away Tip

When it comes to designs in scrapbooking paper and fabric, the scrapbook industry as a whole seems to be a little bit ahead of the fabric industry. But there is an off shoot in the fabric industry that is very trendy, and is the fastest growing portion of the industry right now. There's some very trendy geometric fabrics aiming at the 20 something DIY crowd and yet the bulk of the fabric industry is more traditional. It's so interesting to see how high fashion gets incorporated into our crafting.

Hi, I’m Cara, I’m a Canucklehead (Nova Scotia) living in Luxembourg with my tall, dark and hot hubby. He’s French and the reason I came here in the first place. Wouldn’t we all do anything for love? Though, it’s not like he had to twist my rubber arm to come to this fairy tale land, we love Luxie! We have 6 children… nope, not a typo! And only one of those is a girl As you can imagine, she’s a spitfire.

As far as crafting goes, I’m a mixed media artist and I do a lot of paper crafts but I absolutely love scrapbooking. I love every single moment of the process, from the stories (oh, how I love to tell a good story!) and the photos, to the design, techniques and product (who can resist all those gorgeous products!). I love bright, happy colours, lots of white and lots of white space and lots of layers and clusters!

My first love was sewing, and I can usually incorporate it into my scrapbooks. Sometimes however, my cheating heart strays… it’s usually as Carnaval approaches and all those fabulous costumes are tempting me. I get that itch to sew on fabric (gasp!)… and I cheat on Scrapbooking, but she always takes me back

We tend to think we can get more done in a day than we really can. Put some breathing room into your schedule. If you think something will take 15 min schedule 30 for yourself. Allow yourself some space to get things done and breathe.

Try the December Daily approach. Prep the album ahead of time. Then all you have to do is print your photos, write a few words and toss them in. Use apps like the Collect App or Momento to capture those memories.

Hi I’m Jen, a blessed wife and mom of 2. I am a scrapbook designer, blogger and crafter that loves to play with real & digital paper. I do this through creating digital kits, hybrid projects and mini albums. I am so inspired by everything around me and I want to share that inspiration with you through the kits and projects I make.

I began traditional scrapbooking in 1999 with Creative Memories, and in 2007 I discovered digital scrapbooking. I fell in love with the freedom I felt to create with both paper and digital. It was then that I decided to take a leap and began creating my own digital products, hybrid projects and sharing them on my blog. 'Celebrate the Everyday' is the focus of my blog posts and in my creations. As a busy wife and mom, I want to be able to enjoy the everyday moments, while having fun scrapbooking and share with you how to capture those moments, create something you will love both quickly and easily, to enjoy for years to come.

Connie Hanks is a mommy, wife, photographer, scrapbooker, crafter and volunteer-extraordinaire who never outgrew seeing the world as colorful as a fresh box of Crayola crayons! Her laid-back SoCal approach, along with her colorful Latin flavors, keep her projects fresh, vibrant and totally doable! She’s blessed to live with her “4-family” in beautiful San Diego; her loving husband Steve with whom she fell madly in love with at just 19 years old (many, many moons ago!), her 8- and 5-year-old daughters that are the stars of most of her scrapbook pages, and the growing menagerie of pets said daughters keep falling in love with and bringing home! She loves to dream, travel, play with her daughters, sing while her hubby plays guitar and rarely misses an opportunity to be behind the lens when she’s with family and friends. She started her blog Clicky Chick Creates in 2013 as a way to share her colorful view of the world, mostly through photos and crafts, sprinkled with lots of creative tips and tutorials!

Alison Day started creating scrapbooks to preserve her family’s memories about 6 years ago. Today she enjoy this hobby even more but has added card making, home decor and even some art journaling to the mix. She recently had a layout published in the Fall issue of Scrapbook and Cards Today magazine and two in the Summer edition of Canadian Scrapbooker Magazine. If you are doing a December Daily project, streamline things to make it easier on yourself. Alison uses a 6x8 Simple Stories pocket page album, so she can slip in a date card, photo and journalling card and call it done! You can fill in gaps with photos of Christmas things you don't want to forget, even if they aren't specific to that day/

Aside from being an elementary teacher, wife, and mom to two grown sons, Lisa is a passionate, lifelong crafter. In 1999, she met and fell in love with scrapbooking, and she’s been doing it in one form or another ever since. In 2008, she began teaching scrapbooking classes at local crops and eventually joined the design team at her local scrapbook store, where she still enjoys the privilege of playing with paper and sharing her creations with others. Go into your stash and pull together a kit of your favorite holiday products and lay it out on your workspace. When you get a few minutes do little steps of your project. Then sit down one afternoon and create an assembly line to complete your projects.

Carole has been an avid PaintShop Pro user for over 10 years and has taught digital scrapbooking online and in-person to hundreds of users. Over the years, she has written hundreds of tutorials and since opening the Scrapbook Campus two years ago, she has converted the plain written tutorials into multimedia ones, including videos and detailed guidebooks. When time allows, Carole also likes to create scrapbook pages but is more interested by the technical aspect of digital scrapbooking.

Hi I'm Jen Funk Weber! I learned to embroider about the time I learned to read. I also learned to sew, thanks to a crafty mother and an unattended sewing machine. Barbie clothes and furnishings were my first specialty.

As a member of the 4-H Sewing Club, I began designing clothes and crafts, cutting patterns from taped-together newspaper. I took up embroidery again while winter care-taking for remote lodges in Alaska. Ribbons won at the State Fair called attention to the designs and led to requests for patterns which led to Funk & Weber Designs. Together, my husband Mike and I create colorful (usually), playful patterns that bring together our love of nature, wildlife, puzzles, and subtleties. 

In addition to print and digital patterns, Funk & Weber Designs offers online stitching and finishing classes.

We all have routine things we do at this time of year. Pick one thing and mix it up! Doing the same things over and over can get boring and sap your creativity. Change things up to reinstate the creative fun!

Hi, I’m Cara, I’m a Canucklehead (Nova Scotia) living in Luxembourg with my tall, dark and hot hubby. He’s French and the reason I came here in the first place. Wouldn’t we all do anything for love? Though, it’s not like he had to twist my rubber arm to come to this fairy tale land, we love Luxie! We have 6 children… nope, not a typo! And only one of those is a girl As you can imagine, she’s a spitfire.

As far as crafting goes, I’m a mixed media artist and I do a lot of paper crafts but I absolutely love scrapbooking. I love every single moment of the process, from the stories (oh, how I love to tell a good story!) and the photos, to the design, techniques and product (who can resist all those gorgeous products!). I love bright, happy colours, lots of white and lots of white space and lots of layers and clusters!

My first love was sewing, and I can usually incorporate it into my scrapbooks. Sometimes however, my cheating heart strays… it’s usually as Carnaval approaches and all those fabulous costumes are tempting me. I get that itch to sew on fabric (gasp!)… and I cheat on Scrapbooking, but she always takes me back

All I Really Need to Know About Journaling I Learned in First Grade with Monica Bradford

Former elementary school teacher Monica Bradford says, “All I really need to know about how to live and what to journal and how to write I learned in first grade. Meaningful pages are not at the top of the magazine mountain, but there in the picture pile on my scrap table.

These are the things I learned:

All I need is an idea and a #2 pencil to begin

Story is more important than perfect grammar

Stacy became a scrapbooker years ago and became the founding editor of Simple Scrapbooks magazine. Stacy's book Big Picture started her on a journey that lead to pioneering online education classes. That same book was the first scrapbooking book I bought and Stacy's ideas and passion have inspired me and thousands of scrapbookers around the globe.

But more than being a leading light in our industry Stacy is a friendly and colourful woman with an open heart. She inspired me to splash out on colourful paper serviettes - which I now keep on hand for those days when life needs a little colour!

Jennifer's Top Tip for Inspiration

The biggest tip I have for staying inspired is switching gears often. If I just created this book and I was going to go right into creating another book, I don’t think I would have the same kind of momentum and excitement for it. So instead my next project is completely unrelated.

I’m actually putting together something to sell in a more traditional shop environment and getting back to a more tactile creative experience. A few years ago I thought I didn’t like working with my hands anymore, that digital was 100% where I was headed. A friend suggested I try something new and that experience totally fulfilled what I was missing.

I regularly switch gears and do something different to keep my energy up and stay inspired about my scrapbooking.

Everyday Storyteller: Special Offer

There’s so much more to scrapbooking, so much more to memory keeping than how the page actually looks and that’s what I really wanted Everyday Storyteller to be about, was how you bring scrapbooking into your life as kind of a lifestyle practice. Practical is the one word that we hung this book on - I want practical ideas that somebody can take away in using their own scrapbooking, not just a pretty page that they can recreate.

Pair Words and Photos

Use a tech tool like If this then that or Memento App to send your Instagram, Flickr or phone photos to your blog. The caption is stored as the title and you can go back and edit the post to add a story later.

I use this Instagram to Blogger recipe for if this then that.

Use Down Time to Write some Journalling

While waiting at my daughter's dance class I use the Blogger iPhone App or the WordPress iPhone App to journal and I can even attach a photo. I can leave it as just a blog post, or I can create a page later.

Get Photos Ready to Scrap

I find that having all my photos together in a mosaic can form the basis for a speedy scrapbook page. Learn how to do it:

Create a Photobook

My Top Ten Photobook was a super easy project xthat took me less than three hours from woe to go. I selected my photos, jotted some journalling ideas then used the awesome Ali Edwards design at Shutterfly to create a stunning book.
