Don't forget those quotes!

You know all those times you think back on your family and remember the "Words to live by"? You know what I mean... how grandpa Jack always says "Give em an inch" and Aunt Jane always says "Don't forget your sunscreen!". They say the things we love and also the things we dread hearing. As a kid you may have even mocked one of these relatives with their funny thoughts.

Now as an adult you can really appreciate how this makes each of our relatives unique and fun. We will always want to remember the things they said over and over and we will want to pass on those quotes and even their knowledge to our children and our grandkids.

Why not make a page just for them. Place a great picture or two.. personally I like the idea of a picture of from when they were a young adult and one that shows how they look now. On your computer or even in your own handwriting print the "quotes" they are known for on pretty solids. I like using the computer just because you can choose different fonts for each quote.

Cut out and place the quotes around the pictures. Depending on how many quotes you have they might take up the whole page or you can add lots of fun embellishments. For instance if one of your quotes is "There are plenty of fish in the sea" you could embellish with little fishes and a fishing net.

Use your imagination and record those memories!

Using Chalk

Chalk is probably one of my all time favorite mediums. You can use it for distressing pages or for creating your own backgrounds. Chalk can be used to give an area a soft look or a bold look.

I use chalk in different ways. I have stick chalks that I use for coloring in an area or lay on their sides to add wide sweeping color. You can use a cotton ball to even out the edges or for blending colors on the page.

I have chalks in the paint type canisters that I use by dabbing a cotton ball across the color and then applying it. This gives a softer look.

To make your chalk last longer: When you have just a small peice left over, crush it up and then use cotton balls or q-tips for application .

Creating a Pregnancy Scrapbook

“Mommy, tell me again about when I was born”. Any one who is a mother has heard this phrase countless times. Our children love to hear the story of how they were born. For those that are not yet mothers, I promise your kids will ask this many many times in the years to come.

Creating a scrapbook of your pregnancy helps you tell your child the story of their birth.

Here are several ideas for creating this very special scrapbook:

1. Take photos the day you find out you’re pregnant. Take a photo of mom and dad. Take photos of any siblings and take photos of any grandparents who might live locally.

2. Kids want to know “were you excited?” and “were you happy?” They also want to know “who did you tell first?” Journal the answers to these questions, for inclusion in the scrapbook. If this is your first pregnancy, it’s hard to guess what your child might ask you in 5 years. Think of yourself as a child. What did you want to know about your mother’s pregnancy? If you have other children, you know the questions you are going to be asked.

3. Take photos of mom and dad as the pregnancy progresses. Both my kids love seeing the photos of me being pregnant. We took side views, back views and front views.

4. Both my kids wanted to know what their names would’ve been had they been boys. (I have two girls). My own mom tells me about the name discussions she and my dad had before I was born. Again, journal these answers for your child to read when they are older.

5. Keep any reports and ultrasound photos that you receive from the doctor. I have ultrasound photos from both of my kids and they love seeing them.

6. Take a picture of the hospital where the child was born. Both of my kids were born at different hospitals and they both want to know about the hospital they were born at. They both have asked about the hospital stay as well. Did I stay overnight? Did I receive any medication? As the kids get older their questions become more detailed. Writing out the experience and putting this into the scrapbook allows the older child to have more information.

7. Take a picture of the delivering doctor if possible.

8. If there is baby naming, bris, or christening, take photos. Children want to see this. This is part of their birth.

9. Keep a list of who visits you in the hospital. Take photos if possible. Again, these are all questions I’ve been asked by my own kids.

10. Take a photo of their bedroom the night they come home. They want to know what it looked like.

Kids love knowing the story of their birth. It’s a book they’ll look at over and over again. It’s truly the story of them!!

Other uses for scrapbook techniques

One of the best things about learning to scrapbook is how you can incorporate the techniques into other events in your life. I have used scrapbooking to make birthday cards, christmas cards, invitations etc.

Imagine how you can incorporate scrapbooking into your wedding. You can make the invitations, placecards, thank you cards and even the party favors yourself and not only save money but everyone will love and remember the personal touch.

Take a look at these sand dollars:

These are ideal for making placecards for a wedding. You could write the name of each individual using a caligraphy pen and then using ribbon in your wedding colors you could thread the ribbon through the slots to make each shell stand out.

On the backside of the shells you can also write the names of the Bride and Groom and the date. This can also be used as a great memento for the guests to take home. Be sure to create one for the Bride and Groom themselves which they can later add to their wedding scrapbook!

The room is done!

Vacation was great and busy and the best part is that we used some of the time to clean out the garage and set up a craft room.

I can scrap in comfort finally! I have already finished two pages and have plans for a lot more. I will finally get to show you the results of some of the techniques I try to share with everyone. Stay tuned, this is going to be fun!

Not gone

I just wanted to catch up with everyone and let you know I haven't falled off the earth. We have family in town this week, a family reunion and camping trip planned for this weekend and I have been working on helping a friend get his websites up and going and I will be trying to help promote his e-book. I will let you know more about all that when it is up and going! We do have one blog done which you can see at www.carpsvoice.blogspot.com and you can see what it is all about. Good news, we will be getting the scrapbooking room painted and set up this weekend too! I expect life to back to somewhat normal after next Monday and will start righting more. Using fibers on your scrapbook pages

What on earth do you do with all those great little fibers? You know the ones..they look like little fancy pieces of yarn and they come in beautiful textures and colors but what on earth do you use them for?

Here are a number of ways you can use them:

As a border

Tie on a tag

Wrap around a frame

Punch holes in the side and tie through to look like a tied on binding

Hang' a photo or title with it

Stitch around your frame

Use it to "tie" items on your page together

Scrapbooking is a hobby or craft that is related to pasting newspaper clips, magazine articles, and personal photographs or other into customized decorated albums or scrapbooks. So if you too share in the same interest you should choose the right paper, templates and ideas to make your own scrapbook.

1. You need to choose the right paper for your project as there are a variety of scrapbook papers available. Cardstock is a heavy weight paper mainly used for your page layout especially for photo mats and paper piercing. Background and Texture paper is used to decorate the background of your scrapbook pages. Gingham paper is a patterned paper used for background accents on your scrapbook pages. Mulberry paper adds a bit of “flair” to your pages whereas Vellum looks very elegant and could be used for masking an image or embossing. When you choose a scrapbook paper for your memory books always choose one that is acid free so that the photographs you need to preserve are not ruined.

2. There are different scrapbooking templates that you can use for your scrapbook pages like the lettering templates, envelope templates, die cut templates that shall assist you in making the perfect design for your scrapbook layouts.

3. A scrapbooking technique known as “Inking” offers a lot of variety whereby there is no specific way to ink your pages and you can use as much ink as you like in your project. For this you need to have 1) scrapbooking paper, 2) clean and dry sponge, ink pads of your choice and other supplies such as stamps, stickers, templates.

First you should cut your desired mattes and papers, then dab the paper in the inkpad and turn it into various directions. It will create a smudged color on your paper and then use a sponge to fill in the color in uneven areas you like. It adds a depth to your pages and gives an antique and weathered look by enhancing your paper and adding to overall layout.

4. You can even use craft punch templates that comes in different shapes and are usually only an inch or two in dimension. Punch your shape on the scarp book paper and place it on a copier with a dark sheet of paper covering the punched potion and lastly enlarge it to your desired size and cut out the black punch pieces for templates. This way you have some nice shapes for your scrap book layouts.

5. For beginners, there are some tools such as Eyelet setters, decorative scissors, paper trimmers that shall help you to get start off with the whole fun.

6. You can also include quotes to add some elegance to your page layouts. Thus your scrapbook will become unique and also interesting for others to view.

Milestone scrapbooks

One of my favorite things to give for a milestone event, (graduation, wedding, moving out, even a birthday) is a scrapbook. When my kids graduated high school I made each of them a scrapbook of their lives. I have also made wedding scrapbooks for friends and family weddings. A great idea for a scrapbook gift anytime is to give cardstock cards or nice stationary to other relatives and friends and have them write a special message to the person recieving the gift. Use the notes along with pictures of that person with the recipient, stickers, etc. to make a scrapbook that will be cherished for life!

Pinwheels for scrapbooks

Poor Handwriting

A lot of people feel that their handwriting is too poor to put into a scrapbook. Here you are spending all this time making a beautiful book of memories and you don't want to mess it up with bad handwriting.

There are options! You can always use your computer to write out your thoughts and memories, print them out and add that to your scrapbook. You can also use stickers and rub ons.

The thing to remember though is that this is YOU and YOUR memories. Generations from now as long as your handwriting is legible, your relatives will love seeing YOUR handwriting. Make sure to include some in your scrapbook. Don't do all your journaling by computer. It is like looking in a mirror. Sometimes you are the only one who doesn't like what you see.

Distressing your scrapbook pages

Distressing your scrapbooking pages gives them a very unique one of a kind look and is personally one of my favorite techniques.

To get a crumpled look you can take your regular paper and just crumple it into a ball. Open back up and do it again until you get the look you want. If you are using cardstock you will want to spray it with water first and then crumple. You can use an iron to help dry it or even just to flatten it out a little if you have too much crumple.

You can use sandpaper to roughen the paper up. This looks especially good if you sand the edges of your frames. Just rub the sandpaper over the parts of the paper you want to distress.

Tearing your paper gives you another distresses look. You can also use chalk or ink around the torn edges to give it an even more unique and aged look.

One of my very favorites is using watered down paints or walnut ink on paper. I used walnut ink to distress some of my tags. I just soaked them in the watered down ink until I had the look I wanted and then crumpled them up and used them on pages for a very fun look.

You can do the same with watered down paints. Just brush the paint over the sections or even the whole page. I took a white piece of cardstock and painted streaks along it to make my own background. It looked great and with this technique you can use all the bright and bold colors you love!

Make Money Creating Wedding/Memorial Scrapbooks

If you're familiar with creating scrapbooks then you have a work at home business waiting to be opened in your lap. Scrapbooks are a wonderful way to treasure wedding memories or the memories of a lost loved one.

To create a wedding scrapbook for a client you will need to attend the wedding or reception in order to gather photographs and quotes from family and friends of the happy couple. For this you will need a digital camera and a small tape recorder or notepad.

If the scrapbook is meant to be a memorial for someone you will need to gather photographs of the person from his or her relatives. Try to get photos from all phases of the person's life. Ask the friends and family of the person to recall their memories of their loved one.

It would be best to use a tape recorder for this for accuracy. You don't want entire chapters about the person, just words he or she said or funny events that occurred in their life.

Use the wedding's theme for the wedding scrapbook. Use items from the wedding in the scrapbook, pressed flowers, ribbons, and lace from the veil, the couple's vows, and even the groom's tie. This scrapbook will become a family treasure. You want the scrapbook to bring the wedding to life each time someone opens it.

For the memorial scrapbook try to base the theme on the person being honored. What is the one personality trait or hobby or quirk of his or hers that the person's relatives remember best? Was the person a comedian, an avid fisher, or the scholarly type? Was the person a proud veteran? Maybe he or she was a community activist.

Try to use small objects from the person's life in the scrapbook to personalize it, a bit of cloth from a favorite dress, favorite flowers, awards, the ugly tie a child bought for a dad's birthday or for Father's Day, school drawings made by the person's children.

While performing either scrapbook service you must remember that discretion is of utmost importance. For example, leave out the embarrassing remark the bride's aunt made no matter how funny you may think it. Don't include an ugly quote or memory in the memorial scrapbook. Your clients won't appreciate it.

To advertise your wedding scrapbook service create eye-catching business cards and brochures on your computer and leave them at bridal shops, at stores with wedding registries, and place ads in your local newspaper. You might try church bulletins boards as well, as long as the powers that be don't mind.

For your memorial scrapbook service leave brochures at funeral homes, place newspaper ads, and leave your card with the ministers and priests in your town. Act with respect and discretion. In other words, don't hand out brochures at the funeral.

When a client asks about your service it would be wise to have a scrapbook you've already made on hand that you can show the client to demonstrate your skill. Your client wants to know what he or she is getting in exchange for their hard-earned money.

But how much should you charge?

People are willing to pay well for a truly beautiful scrapbook of their memories. $50 to $100 isn't unreasonable for the work and time you put into the scrapbook. You could charge more for a really detailed wedding scrapbook.

Charging more for a detailed memorial album would be up to you. But it might be wise to set a fixed price for memorial albums, for example $50 for a small album and $75 for a large album.

You don't want to seem as if you're trying to gouge the mourning family as doing so could harm your business reputation. Treat the family with respect and do the finest job possible on their scrapbook. Soon word of your skill will spread to other people interested in having a memorial album created.

Put your love for creating scrapbooks to work, and one day you can create a scrapbook about your successful business that you created one memory at a time.

Free Fonts

One of my very favorite things to do with my scrapbook pages is to use great looking fonts. The same ole fonts that everyone else uses get kind of boring. I like to use different fonts for my titles, journaling, notes, etc. Anytime I plan to use the computer to type something up I try to pick a font that compliments the look of the page I am working on. You can make your own titles by just going into Word and typing up what you want it to say, adjust the size to fit your page and they print it out on cardstock or vellum. I try to think of a bunch of different titles when I do one so that I'm not wasting paper. You can download a lot of really fun fonts for free at: http://www.coolarchive.com/fonts.php

Creating a Wedding Scrapbook

A scrapbook of a wedding is different than a photo album of a wedding. I believe a photo album is to showcase the photos taken at the wedding. I believe a scrapbook of the wedding is to share the story of the days/years leading up to the wedding and then share photos of the event itself.

The following suggestions are just that, suggestions. There is no right or wrong in creating a scrapbook. It is my goal to provide some thought starters to creating a wedding scrapbook.

Consider starting with a few photos of both the bride and the groom as children. Add a few photos of them as teens and then some photos of the couple during the dating process.

During the planning stages, often banquet rooms are looked at, dresses and tuxedos are looked at, and invitations are looked at. Taking a few photos of the various planning days are great additions to the scrapbook. If the bridal shop will allow it, it can be fun to take photos of the bride in each dress she tries on.

When you decide on a banquet room, take a few photos of the room empty. Take a few photos of the building housing the banquet room.

Once a menu is decided on, save a copy of the menu provided by the banquet room. One event I helped with, we actually made the menu ourselves. We wanted guests to know what was being served that night and so we included our self made menu in the scrapbook.

You’ll also want to save one copy of all of the following:
• An invitation
• An R.S.V.P. card
• A place card
• A thank you note
• A copy of the guest list

If you order candy bar wrappers, or any other wedding favor, save one for your scrapbook. If you use a D.J. or a band, save one of their business cards, or one of their brochures, to include in your scrapbook. If you hire any other type of entertainer, again, save a business card or brochure.

As you plan your wedding, it can be fun to journal the days. There will always be mishaps along the way and as you are celebrating your first anniversary, you will laugh over the mishaps and the other notes you took as you planned.

When the R.S.V.P. cards come in, often times folks will write personal messages. Save those. Just like a high school yearbook, it’s fun to go back and read what others wrote, several years later.
And now, the day of the wedding has arrived. It’s time to take those photos that you’ll want for both your wedding photo album and also your wedding scrapbook.

Scrapbooking memories without pictures

How do you remember all those little things you want to remember? Most people try to take pictures but that isn't always possible. You want your scrapbooks to detail the memories and important events of your lives but you can't possibly take a picture every single second of every single day!

You can still add those memories to your scrapbook and you will want to! Journaling is a great way to document those little moments. You can use a great font and pretty paper to document something adorable your little one said and use that as the picture or even the border and then journal the moment in the center of the page. If you are documenting an event, say a birthday party and the pictures don't turn out or you just didn't get to take any, you can use the invitation, some pieces of the wrapping paper etc and journal the day around them. There are endless ways to incoporate your memories into your scrapbooks even without pictures. If you have ideas you would like to share or if you are already doing this, please share with us!

Ghost Letters

Ghost letters are basically a clear set of letters which let your background show through them. They can look really cool but like vellum, how do you apply them without the adhesive showing through?

Tips and Ideas for scrapbooking

Here are some great tips I found in an old email about scrapbooking. I would love to give credit to the author but it wasn't included in the email. If you know who the author is let me know so I can give them credit please!

Tips For Great Scrapbooking!

1) Use only archival quality papers and material. Items should
be acid free and papers should be acid and lignin free.

2) Work backwards. Start with current photographs and work your
way backward in time. Start with what you know before you forget!

3) Journal! Journal! Journal! A lot of times, other people don’t
know the story associated with your photographs. Be sure to
include the Who, What, When, Where and Why in each layout. Avoid
saying things like "we had a great time". Instead include
specifics such as "It poured on our wedding day but we never
noticed with everyone dancing and partying".

4) Focus on your photos, not your backdrop. Don’t put so much
into your pages that it washes out your photos. After all, you
want people to see your photos. Backgrounds should compliment and
stay just that: a background!

5) As you get your film developed, sort your film according to
event, date or any other category. Date your photos on the back
with a photo safe pen if you don’t have a date stamp feature on
your camera. If you cannot remember the actual date, include
notes such as "Spring, 1999" or "TJ, age 2".

6) Have several albums/projects going at one time. This avoids
boredom and allows you to switch back and forth between themes.
For instance, work on your wedding album while you work on a
vacation album.

7) Don’t necessarily scrap in order of event. Work on what you
are in the mood for. Don’t do a layout just because it is
chronologically the next one to do. Use albums that you can
change around your layouts if necessary.

8) Whenever possible, handwrite your journaling. I know, I know,
you hate your handwriting, right? But it’s a part of you and your
legacy to future generations. Which is better to have: A
handwritten letter from your great grandmother or a typed up
letter? Need I say more? For larger stories it’s ok to use
computer generated fonts to write your story.

9) Don’t fret about creativity. We ALL have creativity and
individual personality. Let your personality shine in your
albums. Do what YOU like. Anything goes in Scrapbooking, nothing
you do is "wrong".

10) If you are stumped for ideas, take a look at a friend’s
scrapbook, utilize idea books/magazines or better yet, take one
