Notecase Pro v4.8.6 desktop edition has just been released.

This is a maintenance release, adding two new builds, and fixing some minor issues:
- fix: bookmark editor "Peek" feature may stop working if bookmark list was edited, but not yet saved with "OK"
- Lua library upgraded to v 5.5.0
- updated GTK library stack for Windows Mingw64 build
- smaller performance optimization related to loading HTML (loading .ncd format or pasting to note for example,)
- smaller performance optimization of drawing note contents
- possible speedup when loading large .ncdb/.ncde files (less internal logging)
- update Windows (InnoSetup) installer scripts (replace deprecated APIs)
- new build platform OpenSuse Leap 15.6 (deprecates 15.4 package)
- new build platform Ubuntu 26.04 (beta OS)
- new build platform Fedora 44 (beta OS)
- new build platform OpenSuse Leap 16
- log OpenSSL version info in NcSyncServer
- set logging to screen for NcSyncServer disabled by default (~100x faster performance)

As previously announced, the following builds were removed: Fedora 40, Ubuntu 20.04, Ubuntu 24.10.

The following builds are deprecated now (end-of-life to be reached soon) and will be removed unless you contact me and say you need them: Freebsd 14, Ubuntu 25.10, Fedora 41, Fedora 42.

- fix: when searching within the current note only, automatically uncheck the Fill to List option

This is a maintenance release, fixing some minor issues:

- add: make bookmark menu item bold/italic/colored if the same formatting was applied to target note title
- add: hidden option (set MarkdownExportSkipColorTag=1 in [Export] section of the .ini file) to skip exporting text color in Markdown format (previously activated via "Nonstandard tags as HTML")
- add: hidden option (set MarkdownExportObsidianDialect=1 in [Export] section of the .ini file) to encode images and attachments in Obsidian-specific Markdown format
- fix: in Markdown export, encode embedded images with relative path
- fix: in Markdown export, correctly encode exported attachments as links to external files
- fix: when exporting to html or md format, a note with more than 40 pasted images will start asking a permission to overwrite one image with another
- new build for RHEL (AlmaLinux) 10

I've lost Windows 32-bit GTK library files when changing laptops, let me know if anyone uses this ancient build.

This is a maintenance release, adding two new builds, and fixing some minor issues:
- updated Lua to a latest version 5.4.7
- updated Bodhi distro, this build now uses GTK3.x instead of GTK2.x
- new builds for Fedora 41 and Ubuntu 24.10
- fix: app startup got stuck for 45 seconds on recently updated Windows 10 PC inside DDEConnect() Windows API call.
Added .ini file key support "SkipDDE=1" (in "[Startup]" section) to skip DDE system usage completely (will disable single app instance).
- fix: upload debug/crash log files (Help>Send Activity Log window) using https instead of http protocol

NoteCase Pro v4.8.0 desktop edition released

Minor release again, mostly released to fix the "Check for updates" feature errors due to changing the web hosting provider. Additionally, as announced a long time ago, audio (gstreamer) support was removed.

Additional fixes:
- major: as announced a while ago, support for audio operations (recording, playing) has been removed, this code had issues due to uneven Gstreamer support over platforms (v 0.1 vs 1.0; lack of quality recording codecs on Windows, huge distribution size with Gstreamer bundled on Windows/Mac
- fix: "Check for Update" stopped working in June after changing hosting provider (https protocol is now required instead of http)
- fix: Lua method Nc_GUI_SelectionDlgTbl returns wrong data in multi-selection mode
- add: replace all the references to old address virtual-sky.com (not used anymore) to notecasepro.com
- add: Lua API Nc_Doc_SendViaEmail now accepts -1 value for parameter nSelection (meaning nothing to export, i.e. mail with no attachment)
- add: "No title decoration" option when exporting to .txt format (avoids prefixing title with "*" character)

As previously deprecated, Ubuntu 23.10, Fedora 37, Mageia 8 were removed now.

NoteCase Pro v4.7.9 desktop edition released

This is a small release, featuring two new builds to address Fedora 40 and Ubuntu 24.04 releases.

Additional fixes:
- fix: selecting "Calibri" font in Style Manager actually applied as "Calibri Light" (similarly, "Arial" mapped to "Arial Condensed")
- fix: search function did not cycle through notes in correct order when starting the same search the 2nd time

As previously deprecated, Ubuntu 23.04 and FreeBSD v12.1 builds were removed now.

The following builds are now deprecated (having End-of-life being reached or coming soon) and will be removed in the next build: Ubuntu 23.10, Fedora 37, Mageia 8, Suse leap 15.4 (will be upgraded to 15.6), RHEL8.

Additionally, I plan to upgrade Bodhi (from 32-bit to 64-bit), Solus, OpenIndiana (Solaris) and OpenBSD (if the build issues with OpenSSL are resolved).

Notecase Pro v4.7.7 desktop and v1.2.4 Android edition has just been released.

The major change in this release is file .ncdb/.ncde format change allowing for faster document load (noticeable with documents having hge number of notes). New versions will automatically upgrade the file format, so first load with new version may take a slightly longer, subsequent loads are much faster.
The change is forwards-incompatible, i.e. old program versions can not read new/converted documents, so all editions had to be upgraded simultaneously.

Notable changes in this release for desktop:
- major: .ndcb/.ncde file format merges 3 different database tables (notes_tree, icons and tasks) back into main "notes" table for faster document loading
- add: support to import JPEG image with binary encoding from RTF file (\jpegblip\bin)
- add: new build for FreeBSD 14.0 (backported to v4.7.6 as well)
- fix TLS connectivity when using synchronization feature between Android client and newer sync server (using OpenSSL v3)
- fix: macOS was built without GtkSourceView support because GTK3 stack for macOS switched from GtkSourceView v3 to v4 and build system did not detect new version (backported to 4.7.6)
- fix: crash on startup on macOS Sonoma (backported to 4.7.6)
- additional document loading optimizations, .ncdb test file now loads 45% faster than in official 4.7.6 release
- fix: file format upgrade for .ncdb/.ncde should fail cleanly when the file is read-only (loading now reports an error)
- removed redirection to feedback web page on Windows package uninstall

Notable changes in this release for Android:
- enable automatic capitalization of sentence or new line on note content editor
- map Windows font "Consolas" to a monospace font style on Android
- major: adapt .ncdb document format to changes done in NoteCase Pro for desktop v4.7.7
- add TLSv1.3 to list of allowed protocols
- support pinning files in "recently used" list

Ubuntu 23.04 will reach End of Life on January 25th 2024, so this build has been deprecated. Same goes to FreeBSD v12.1 build. Raspberry Pi armhf build (older build for armhf architecture, not the new AARM64 build) has been removed, because qemu VM can not build the code anymore due to virtual memory allocation error in the compiler.

I am trying to find out how many people use audio recording/playing within NoteCase Pro. If you use any of these, please ping me.

The reason is that I would like to deprecate (and eventually remove) this feature if it is not used by the users too much. GStreamer library had a major interface changes between versions 0.1 and 1.0 and it is hard to support both versions, also it doesn't seem to work as nice on a number of platforms including Windows (Mingw) and it increases installer size by 120MB (compressed) or 700MB on disk (uncompressed).

- updated the launcher script for macOS app bundle (fixes the issue with Japanese, Chinese input), updated macOS build to latest GTK version
- disabled the code for collection of statistical telemetry data (data was not as useful as much as I hoped)
- add: document tabs context menu got a new "Copy Document Path" action to put document path to clipboard
- add: Nc_Doc_Load now got optional password parameter to open encrypted documents without prompting for password on screen
- fix: on ncdb/ncde document load, check database integrity, try to rebuild indexes if any issue found
- fix: case where copy/paste of rich text formatted content did not preserve all formatting properties
- fix: some macOS issues, reported by a user, resolved by GTK library rebuild
- fix: opening document in 2nd app instance with "--new-instance" parameter caused the document to be opened in the 1st instance as well
- fix: make "#" column in Script Manager window list auto-sized
- fix: script "059_GlobaSearch.lua" reported an error when searching for something that does not exist in the document

- add: when exporting document to HTML, make external hyperlinks open in a new tab when clicked (previously this worked only for "Format with tree in separate frame" subtype)
- add: new "Restore 'do not show again' options" option in the General Settings dialog (page "04 Global")
- add: new command line parameter "--password-file" to read document password from the file (to improve security)
- add: new command line parameter "--new-instance" for force opening the new program instance (instead of opening document in already existing one)
- add: new command line parameter "--no-config-update" to cause the program instance not to update config file on exit (useful when starting/stopping multiple instances from a script)
- fix: drop down to select target note in Link Properties window does not allow selecting non-leaf notes in GTK 3.x (rewritten to use popup window selector instead)

- fix: rare crash when deleting the note while its embedded images are still being loaded in the background

- fix: hyperlinks to inline targets (anchors) did not export correctly in "HTML with tree in a separate frame" format
- fix: when importing Freeplane links to local files, convert them to absolute links so they keep working in Notecase document as well
- fix: possible crash when redrawing document after being synchronized
- fix: links assigned to note title were not drawn in correct color in Tree Pane
- fix: marked notes may have not been drawn in correct color in Tree Pane in some cases
- fix: copying more than cca 50kB to cliboard in GTK3 Linux build, then pasting the data to a new NoteCase Pro instance blocks for 30sec then fails
(the fix removed the call to force the clipbard data being stored when app exits)

A number of new builds was added, including Fedora 37, Ubuntu 22.10, Suse Leap 15.4, AlmaLinux 9 (RHEL9).
OpenSUSE Thumbleweed build has switched from GTK2 to GTK3.

As deprecated in the last cycle, Suse 42 build have been removed now.
Additionally, Windows 32-bit build, Mageia 6 64-bit build (replaced by Mageia 8), Ubuntu 21.10 (end of life), Centos 8 (replaced with AlmaLinux 9), Arch 64-bit GTK2 (GTK3 version remains).

Unless someone needs this, in next cycle I plan to discontinue the following builds (distros being EOL):
- Fedora 33 - 35 (end of life)
- Debian 10 (end of life)
- Mageia 6 32-bit build (end of life)

I am currently working to upgrade OpenBSD from 6.8 to 7.2, but the code has some issues compiling with latest version of openssl library, so it may take some time.

- fix: macOS build has the main screen partially black on Retina screens only (reported on M1 Mac), fix required raising the minimal target to macOS 10.12

- fix: when hyperlink and an anchor both start at the same position in the note, no link shows in exported HTML

- fix: "find previous" search did not work correctly

NoteCase Pro for Android v1.2.3 has just been released.

This is mostly bug fix release with major improvement being a drop down menu in document open form listing all your SD cards.

Changes in this release:
- update appcompat library to 27.0.2 to fix crash related to "IllegalStateException: Fragment has not been attached yet" error
- new option to compress camera images (preferring JPEG vs PNG format)
- request permission MANAGE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE to be able to write to shared storage
- document open form now has a drop down menu listing available SD card targets

- fix: in rare cases, when searching for some text, selected result in a note contents may not end up scrolled in the visible part of the text view
- fix: copy/pasting the bulleted list with strikethrough formatting applied over the entire note creates a text with two bullet points

Notecase Pro v4.6.0 desktop edition has just been released.

This release features dark mode support for GTK v3.x builds.

Other notable changes in this release:
- loading of large .ncd documents on Linux is up to 8% faster
- add: Lua updated to latest version 5.4.3
- add: to show legacy file formats in File Open window, you can manually add ShowLegacyFileFormats=1 in "[Display]" section of the .ini file
- fix: registering supported text view clipboard formats caused program crash under Linux distros using Wayland compositor
- fix: Documents and similar folders became inaccessible starting with macOS Catalina (10.15.x). Applied likely solution (I need feedback if it helps) was to move launcher script contents directly into the program and for user to give access rights to these folders on startup when prompted.
- fix: Text Pane context menu had double "Copy" and similar entries in mingw build
- fix: do not show auto-save progress popup window if the program does not have a focus (avoid taskbar icon blinking)
- fix: workaround for crash on macOS when exiting by clicking the 'x' button
- fix: using document backup folder with non-ASCII characters in path did not work correctly on Windows
- new Fedora 34 and Ubuntu 21.04 builds
- fix: double-clicking document file in file manager program opened the document in new program instance on Windows Mingw builds (instead of opening in existing instance)
- fix: converting document with pictures to Keynote (.knt) format is much faster (speedup from 12 to 2 sec for specific test document)
- fix: document name with non-ASCII characters did not display correctly in title bar of the main window on Windows

Notecase Pro v4.5.7 desktop edition has just been released.

This release introduces four major changes (both anounced early in the discussion group for a possible feedback):
- consolidation of supported file formats, now only two file formats (.ncdb and .ncde) are considered official
- consolidation of trial modes, unregistered program allows for a 30-day trial mode with all features working
- moving to C++ 11 standard (with consequence of dropping Maemo and OpenPandora builds who do not support this)
- GTK3 code is considered stable now (no longer beta)

To explain the 1st item, "Save as" feature no longer allows you to choose legacy formats (.ncd, .ncz, .nce), but you can still open legacy formats (double-click in file manager or import), "Save" them, or export from official format to legacy ones. The purpose of the change is to make the choice of file formats matching to what's supported on Android, also having fewer file formats is less confusing and more friendy to new users.

Other notable changes in this release:
- add: Lua library updated to v5.4.1
- add: new macOS GTK3.x build to replace GTK2.0 one
- add: make the program compile on OpenIndiana Solaris (to replace old Solaris 11 builds)
- add: new Lua API to modify the recent scripts menu: Nc_App_RecentScripts_Add
- fix: right-click menu "Save Image" action is now practically instantaneous by avoiding recoding, could last up to minute before when saving 20MB embedded image
- fix: possible crash when deleting deep branch having note clones
- fix: possible SQL error when saving as .ncdb if the font name contained apostrophe, resulting file may have skipped saving some notes
- fix: issue within Nc_Note_InsertClone API that may create an issue with refreshing the note title in the Tree Pane
- fix: RTF format import did not reset background color and text hidden attributes after "/plain" keyword occurence (isses reported in TreePad .hjt format import)
- fix: inactive document tab can be hard to read when using dark theme (example GTK3 build with Cinnamon Kashmir Blue theme on Linux Mate)
- fix: setting background color on GTK3 build did not work

Notecase Pro v4.5.5 desktop edition released

Notecase Pro v4.5.5 desktop edition has just been released.

This release fixes some reported bugs and improves .ncd load performance for up to 30%.

But the most important changes are two new Windows builds for GTK3 using Mingw compiler. This finally fixes the major issues (Windows only) preventing us to move the GTK3 build from beta. Mingw also solve the problem of making it easy to update different dependent libraries, so now Win64 has GtkSourceView support (line numbers, syntax highligting).
The only currently unsolved problem with new builds is audio recording, because mingw version of gstreamer package does not ship with needed audio input source ("dshowaudiosrc").
If someone uses Windows XP, I would be greateful to get feedback if Mingw builds work on XP (I don't have one).

In short, unless I get some major reports against GTK3 builds, the idea is to make this platform a default wherever possible. Additionally, the idea is for Mingw builds to replace ones built with VisualStudio, so please comment if you have issues with it.

Major changes in this release:
- fix: indenting text with "Insert tabs as spaces" feature causes issue where formatting shifts along the text
- fix: different allocation/performance improvements making .ncd loading cca 30% faster
- fix: reduce vertical size of note title bar for GTK 3.x builds
- fix: prevent editing note contents while Note Pane widget is hidden (could get focus with Ctrl+P even if hidden)
- fix: remove "n" as mnemonic on a "File>Recent" menu, that letter is already taken by "File>New" action, use "r" instead
- fix: reduce space immediately below the document tab widget (GTK3 only issue)
- fix: improve memory model related to a mapping of clone notes, now uses cca 4,5MB RAM less when loading 300MB test .ncd document file, loading being cca 30% faster
- fix: possible crash when printing the document with embedded images
- fix: issue with embedding images from pasted HTML over https protocol serving images with chunked transfer encoding (example site: www.pcmag.com)
- add: hidden setting to set up custom default input module
- add: force note title popup to be centered within the main window
- TLS protocol configuration in sync server/clients refactored to fix the interconnection problems between different OpenSSL versions (on Debian 10 vs Ubuntu 20 vs Android 10)
- updated rapidjson to master version as of 2020.05.30.
- bring back faster base64 implementation, previously reverted in v4.5.3 due to an algorithm issue (now fixed)
- fix: possible crash when importing Evernote .enex files, could also resolve possible crashes when loading any HTML based formats- add: new build for Freebsd 12.1
- added new Bodhi Linux 5.1.0 32-bit build
- help file updates (work by Paul Merrell)

NoteCase Pro for Android v1.2.2 has just been released.

This is mostly bug fix release.

Changes in this release:
- bring back setting to enable debug-level (more detailed) logging
- fix: possible note text loss in dual panel mode when editing notes after exiting the app and coming back to it
- restore cursor position when restoring app
- changed top-right icon in file dialog from "go to root" to "go to parent" because user usually can not read root folder
- file dialog current path becomes invalid after trying to browse non-readable folder
- when typing empty (and invalid) password when loading encrypted document, do not proceed to show empty document
- setting to backup to custom folder, show selected value, change value with popup menu on click
- added "Save" option to text editor in both landscape and portrait mode
- added customizable shortcut entry for "Save" option -> try to set to Ctrl+S and see if it works for you, did not manage to test this yet, must find HW keyboard
- improved TLS protocol configuration code (used in "Sync" feature) to have better compatibility across different Android versions
- pressing Enter in password input dialog will automatically activate "OK" button
- removed "Resize images" preference (unused)
- fix: possible crash when rotating device while having some unsaved changes and backup on save enabled
- fix: sometimes preference summaries are not refreshed immediately (stops working after coming by to preference that was already open before)
- fix: bulleted list items get concatednated after synchronizing the note from desktop edition

NoteCase Pro for Android v1.2.1 has just been released.

The only change for this release is adapting the program to a file format change done in desktop release v4.5.2.
This solves the "Error: Failed to fetch note formatting!" issue when working with file that was loaded/synced from that recent desktop version.
