On Wednesday 25th January, Eastenders star Jacqueline Jossa won the Best Newcomer award at the National Television Awards. 18 year old Jacqueline (represented by D&B Management) joined the Eastenders cast as the new Lauren Branning in 2010.

Once Jacqueline got over her initial shock, she accepted her award with the following speech,

“Thank you everyone who voted for me. Thank you to everyone at Eastenders, Brian Kirkwood and John York because EastEnders is the best thing that’s ever happened to me. Thank you to my friends, my family, my boyfriend because I wouldn’t be able to do anything without them. Thank you to everyone at D&B and again, everyone who voted for me. Thank You!”

The whole cast and crew of EastEnders were absolutely thrilled and Bryan Kirkwood, Executive Producer had the following to say,

“I'd like to say a huge congratulations to our girl, Jacqueline Jossa, for her amazing success. It's well-deserved recognition of Jacqueline's beautiful, truthful and moving portrayal of Lauren Branning."

Pramface coming soon to BBC3

Pramface is a new 6-part comedy series, about two teenagers trying, and often failing, to come to terms with impending parenthood, coming to BBC Three.

Laura, 18, and Jamie, 16, meet at a sixth form party after completing their respective A-Level and GCSE exams. But little can prepare them for the result of their brief, drunken hook-up.

From the moment Laura discovers she is pregnant, the series follows the couple as they face the big moments and even bigger decisions about life and responsibility across those all important nine months.

Scarlett Alice Johnson (represented by United Agents), who played Vicki Fowler in EastEnders back in 2003, stars as Laura Derbyshire, an 18 year old who has everything going for her. After years of conscientious study she excelled in her exams and in a few weeks she’ll be escaping home for university and independence. This is all coming at the right time for Laura, as her relationship with her warring parents is at an all time low. So despite being grounded, when she’s invited to the party of the summer Laura sneaks out, determined to cut loose and have some fun. But weeks later, she’s horrified when she discovers that the fun, cute guy from the party is in fact a 16 year old boy. And now she has to come to terms with the fact she’s not going to be alone again for a very long time.

Sean Verey (represented by Curtis Brown) stars as Jamie Prince who crashes a sixth-form party and can't believe his luck when he meets party-girl Laura. However, the next morning, worried that a now-sober Laura may react badly to the revelation he’s only 16, he leaves before she wakes. But not before scribbling his number down in the unlikely event she wants to see him again. He’s therefore doubly stunned when Laura does eventually call him a few weeks later with the news that he is going to be a dad. But Jamie’s a good lad and he’s determined to do the right thing. He’s just not sure what that is yet.

Yasmin Paige (also Curtis Brown), who starred most recently as Jordana in the acclaimed feature film Submarine, plays Jamie's friend Beth Mitchell. Beth is smarter than most people around her, but never gets taken seriously because she looks much younger than her 16 years. Her unrequited love for Jamie is exquisitely painful for her. These twin frustrations mean Beth has a tendency to ‘go off on one’ at the slightest provocation.

Dylan Edwards plays Jamie's best friend Mike with Emer Kenny (from Eastenders E20, and who also writes for Skins) as Laura's best friend Danielle.

Angus Deayton and Anna Chancellor take on the roles of Laura’s parents and Ben Crompton and Bronagh Gallagher play Jamie’s parents.

Pramface was written by Chris Reddy, directed by Dan Zeff and is a BBC/Little Comet production for BBC Three.

Guernsey open casting

Kenneth Branagh is set to direct Guernsey, a film adaptation of Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Burrows’s best-selling novel, the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.

Kate Winslet will star as writer Juliet Ashton, who penned columns for a magazine during World War II. After the war, she is contacted by Channel Islander Dawsey Adams and, as their correspondence continues, the story unfolds of how a book society was established on Nazi-occupied Guernsey to fool curfew patrols.

Open auditions are being held to find a girl from Guernsey to play the part of Kit, who is aged between four and six, the adopted child of Juliet Ashton (Kate Winslet).

Casting Brief
Kit: 4 years old - would consider casting a 6 year old as a 4 year old if she could play down. It's important that she is believably that age. A rural, intelligent young girl. A chatter box. Hugely infectious. We love her. Kit is a GREAT role and has lots to do and interacts with the adults in many scenes. We need to find a young girl who would be absolutely comfortable with acting. Who we could get great reaction from and who could also learn lines and interact with the others. She would film in Guernsey and in Pinewood studio. A great face. We should all want to adopt Kit.

The open auditions are due to be held on Saturday 28th January at St Sampson's High School between 09:00 and 14:30 GMT.

Theatre schools on the island have been approached to put forward girls for private auditions on Friday.

Kelly Valentine Hendry, who is responsible for the casting, said they were looking for a natural and previous experience of acting was not necessary.

She said there was no need to book for the open casting, that only one parent could attend per child and those girls attending should take along a small box containing three items they particularly like or find interesting to talk about.

Filming is due to commence mid-March with some of the scenes being filmed in Guernsey.

Kenneth Branagh is currently location-spotting on the island.

Craig Roberts to star alongside Emma Roberts

Young British actor Craig Roberts is to star alongside Emma Roberts in a new film I Am My Family Secret, to be directed by Derick Martini (Hick).

21 year old Craig (represented in the UK by Curtis Brown) recently picked up the Critics Circle award for Young British Performer of the Year for his portrayal of Oliver Tate in Submarine, and will also be seen this year in British indie heist thriller Comes a Bright Day.

The Welsh actor started performing as a child, landing roles in Tracy Beaker and starring as Robin Branaugh in the first two series of CBBC's Young Dracula.

I Am My Family Secret tells the story of two brothers, wildly different, who discover their parents have been hiding a startling and life-altering secret from them for over two decades.

It will shoot later this year.

Russell T Davies to create new children’s drama for CBBC

Russell T Davies, who created The Sarah Jane Adventures for CBBC and brought back Doctor Who to the BBC after a 16-year hiatus, has been commissioned to create a brand new action adventure drama for children's television called Aliens Vs Wizards for CBBC.

From the dark side of the moon, aliens are scanning the Earth searching for magic and are prepared to destroy everything in their path to get it. All that stands in the way of Earth’s imminent destruction are two 16-year old schoolboys, Tom and Benny. It’s Ray Guns vs Wands; Science vs Magic and Aliens vs Wizards.

Tom Clarke lives a seemingly ordinary life with his dad and grandmother. However he hides a deep secret - Tom’s family are wizards and when the Nekross arrive, hungry for magic, they find themselves on the menu.

The Nekross may be equipped with ray guns, teleports and high-tech robots but they haven’t reckoned on Tom and his friend, science super-brain Benny. They form an extraordinary duo, using Tom’s magic and Benny’s science to battle the Nekross and save the Earth.

Russell said of the series idea “Wizards have never met aliens before, and when they do, the result is spectacular! The mysterious Nekross know exactly what to do with magicians. Eat them! Let battle be joined!”

He added "We're joining genres too - the show's a wild, funny, thrilling and sometimes scary collision of magic and science fiction.“

It's the first new series from Russell T Davies since he came back to the UK from Hollywood last year.

CBBC Controller Damian Kavanagh, who commissioned the new series, says: “This is going to be an incredible rollercoaster ride of an adventure. We believe children deserve the best and we’re delighted to be working again with Russell and the talented teams at BBC Wales and FremantleMedia Enterprises to bring the story to life.”

The 12 x 30 minutes episode series will be filmed in the brand new BBC Cymru Wales studios in Roath Lock, Cardiff, for CBBC, for broadcast in Autumn 2012.

Little Cracker becomes a series

Following the success of Kathy Burke's Little Cracker short film, which aired on Sky 1 over Christmas 2010, the actress has written her first ever TV series, which has been picked up by Sky Atlantic.

Young Kathy harboured a dream to be an actress, but circumstance and her upbringing made it an unlikely dream.

The four-part Walking and Talking tells stories inspired from her teenage years - time spent skiving from school with her best friend, talking about boys and planning for the future. Her Little Cracker told of how a chance meeting with The Clash changed her life.

17 year old Ami Metcalf (represented by Kelly Management) will reprise her role starring as the young Kathy with Aimee-Ffion Edwards (Sketch from Skins) again playing her best friend.

Kathy Burke herself will also appear in each episode as Angry Nun, alongside Sean Gallagher (Coronation Street, Linda Green, Death in Paradise) who will play Pretty Nun, and stand-up comedy legend Jerry Sadowitz as Jimmy the Jew.

Talking about the show, Kathy Burke commented: “I wanted to write a semi-autobiographical piece that was uplifting and heart-warming. Walking and Talking is my love letter to books, 70's television, music and friendship."

Lucy Lumsden, Sky's head of comedy added: “We loved Kathy's Little Cracker so much we demanded more. We are immensely proud to have this exquisite series for Sky Atlantic HD."

She's the second star who recorded an episode of Sky 1's Christmas series Little Crackers to get a series off the back of it, following Chris O'Dowd's Moone Boy getting picked up by Sky 1.

The four-part Walking and Talking will be made by Tiger Aspect and directed by Tim Kirkby and will air in Summer 2012.

The Secret of Crickley Hall

A BBC adaptation of James Herbert's best-selling ghost story, The Secret of Crickley Hall, a haunted house chiller, full of scares but underpinned by the moving tales of children and parents separated 70 years apart, is underway.

The three episode drama is to be directed by Joe Ahearne (Apparitions, Doctor Who, This Life) who has also written the script, for BBC Drama Production North, and is set for broadcast around Halloween 2012.

The story is about a family who relocate to a rain-swept house in a Devonshire town called Devil’s Cleave – It turns out that during World War II, the village was decimated by a flood. Crickley Hall was home to a group of poor orphans evacuated from London who lived under the care of the sadistic Augustus Cribben, who terrorised, starved and beat them. The orphans were seemingly washed away by the flood and now their lost spirits haunt the hall, pursued by the monstrous figure of Cribben...

My Phone Genie

16 year old Bessie Cursons from Portsmouth, who shot to fame when she appeared on Britain's Got Talent aged 12, leads the cast of new CITV comedy drama series My Phone Genie. Bessie, who went on to attend Sylvia Young Theatre School, plays Jasmine Hart who downloads a new Genie App to her phone which when opened gives her access to a real life Genie!

Gene the Genie is played by newcomer 16 year old Adam Wadsworth from Chiswick. Haruka Abe (represented by Sainou) plays Naoko. 16 year old Fox Jackson-Keen (represented by Byron's Management) from London, who starred as Billy Elliot for a 2-year run in the West End musical, plays Mobbsy.

The cast also includes Lothaire Gerard (represented by A&J Management) from London as Brent, and 9 year old Ethan Hammer (also represented by A&J) as Reese. Ethan also made his West End debut in ‘Billy Elliot’ playing Small Boy when he was 6 years old. With 17 year old Heather Nicol from Fulwood, who won a full scholarship to Sylvia Young Theatre School when she was 11, as Penne.

Jasmine Hart (Jaz) has a genie in her phone. All Jaz really wanted was the free ringtone download advertised in a weird pop-up ad online, but instead she got landed with Gene.

Genies have kept up-to-date with modern times, ditched their lamps and moved into the mobile phone market. Plus once you've downloaded yourself a genie it's pretty much guaranteed you'll spend the rest of your life trying to get shot of him. The literature reads: Lifetime support and unlimited wishes, your dreams answered and a friend for life (not so different from a mobile phone contract) - moreover, Gene just LOVES granting wishes and sees any occasion as a perfect opportunity for a wish to be used.

The series filmed in Galway, Ireland from July to December 2011.

The 4 O'Clock Club comes to CBBC

Back in March 2011, Screenterrier posted the casting call for the lead characters in a new BBC comedy drama 4 O'Clock Club about a troublesome 13 year-old who wants to become a rap superstar.

Filmed in Manchester, the 13 episode series is now ready to hit our screens, with the first episode on Friday 13th January 2012 at 5:30pm on the CBBC channel.

Written by and starring rapper/comedian Doc Brown as Nathan Carter, the young cast includes:

Newcomer Khalil Madovi as Josh Carter, who at 13 years old, is master of all he surveys - particularly his school, the run-down Elmsbury High. His art of manipulating everyone and everything on school grounds is second only to his desire to become a rap superstar.

14 year old Tom Rolinson (represented by Scream Management) from Blackpool plays Ash, Josh's best friend. Tom had a small role in in Sheridan Smith's Little Cracker.

14 year old Oscar Lloyd (represented by Mark Jermin Management) from Seaford, plays Ryan. Oscar is a member of The Theatre Workshop in Brighton and has previously appeared in Emmerdale, an episode of Doctor Who and Lark Rise to Candleford. He will also be seen in the up-coming BBC drama series One Night.

15 year old Alana Thornton (represented by Amber Personal Management) from Manchester plays school trouble-maker Molly.

Rap and comedy combine to tell a tale of sibling rivalry. Rookie teacher Nathan Carter starts his first day back at Elmsbury High School where he was once - well - not the best kid in the class. Nathan is on a mission. He wants to connect with all the kids who have problems and who he thinks he understands because he used to be one of them. He takes charge of the euphemistically-named 4 O'Clock Club. It's really the detention class, and to his surprise he discovers that the king of the club is his 13-year-old brother, Josh. Josh is in denial that this uncool, elbow-patched, fresh-faced teacher is his brother. He has told all the other 4 O'Clock Clubbers that his brother, Natty C, is a famous rapper.

16-year-old Riley is played by Karla Crome from London. 23 year old Karla (represented by Troika) is a graduate of Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts and is also a talented writer, with her play If Chloe Can recently produced by the National Youth Theatre.

15 year old Levi is played by Reece Noi. 23 year old Reece (represented by Curtis Brown) is from Manchester, and started his acting career as a child, going on to appear in Grange Hill and Waterloo Road. Most recently he appeared in BBC law drama Silk and also stars in British indie feature Seamonsters.

And the youngest member of the family, 6-year-old Leonie is played by newcomer Roma Christensen. Roma is a member of Stage 84, the Yorkshire School of Performing Arts, and recently appeared in Beauty and the Beast at the Alhambra in Bradford.

Hit and Miss is about family, sexual identity and the highs and lows of being a parent. It follows Mia's attempts to mix her killer instincts with her new maternal ones and her search for identity. Having a lethal killer at the heart of a troubled family will dramatically change all of their lives forever.

Hit and Miss also stars Peter Wight as Eddie, Mia's handler and a well-known name in the criminal underworld, Robin Hood's Jonas Armstrong as landscape gardener Ben, who lives in the village and falls for Mia, unaware of her transgendered status.
Vincent Regan (300, Clash of The Titans) plays John, a farmer who owns the smallholding where the Mia and the family live. He considers himself a hard man and is disliked in the village. He lives with his wife Penny (Erin Shanagher) and son Aaron played by 13 year old Jordan Hill (represented by Laine Management).
The cast also includes Ethan Griffin (Marchlands) as Andy, Steve Money (EastEnders) as Wayne, and Ben Crompton (Going Postal) as Liam.

The 6 part series airs on Sky Atlantic this Spring, date tbc.

My Brother The Devil

Screenterrier posted an open casting call back in June last year for a feature film which is now complete. My Brother The Devil tells the tale of two teenage brothers of Egyptian descent who are members of a London postcode gang.

It is the directorial debut of writer/director Sally El Hosaini, is the only British film selected to compete in the world cinema dramatic category at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival which takes place in January.

The film stars 25 year old James Floyd (represented by CAM) as the handsome Rashid, and Fady Elsayed as his younger brother Mo, alongside Saïd Taghmaoui. With 18 year old Letitia Wright (represented by Identity Agency Group), recently seen in Channel 4's Top Boy, as Aisha.

Fourteen-year-old Mo is a lonely, sensitive boy whose hunger for the rant and banter of buddies makes him prone to tread dangerous territories. He idolizes his handsome older brother, Rashid, a charismatic, well-respected member of a local gang, whose drug dealing enables “Rash” to provide for his family. Aching to be seen as a tough guy himself, Mo takes a job that unlocks a fateful turn of events and forces the brothers to confront their inner demons. It turns out that hate is easy. It is love and understanding that take real courage.

"One of the big influences on the story was the 7/7 tube bombings," director Sally El Hosaini told The Observer. "I was frustrated with the way British Muslim youth were being portrayed in the media. I have lived on a council estate in Hackney for the last 10 years and I knew the kids near me were not like that. I just wanted to make an honest film about them."

As well as attending Sundance labs in 2009, Hosaini spent time with young gang members, with the help of script adviser Aymen Hamdouchi. "I would feel a fraud making a film about something I didn't feel I had truly understood. So I did go commando. I found myself hanging on street corners at 3am with groups of boys."

My Brother the Devil was shot on location in Hackney last August and September, in the aftermath of the riots, and will premiere at Sundance with an eye to general release in summer 2012.

First Look at Birdsong starring Eddie Redmayne

29 year old Eddie Redmayne (represented in the UK by United Agents) and Clémence Poesy star as the passionate lovers Stephen and Isabelle brought together by love and torn apart by the First World War, in BBC One's adaptation of Sebastian Faulks' epic love story Birdsong.

The two-part adaptation moves between 1910 and 1916, in turns telling the story of Stephen Wraysford's passionate and erotic, but ultimately doomed, affair with Isabelle Azaire before the war, and the enduring effect it has on him as he fights amidst the blood and gore of the trenches.

This is where he meets Jack Firebrace (Joseph Mawle), a tunneller who is emotional, gregarious and popular with the other men, where Stephen is closed, reserved and distant. In Jack, Stephen sees a version of what he could be as he gradually learns from him what it means to be a man, and to be a father, and in doing so he begins to make peace with his feelings for Isabelle.

The cast also includes Thomas Turgoose (This Is England) Richard Madden (Game of Thrones), one of Screen International's Stars of Tomorrow 2011, and George McKay, who recently filmed the lead role in another WW1 feature Private Peaceful.

Birdsong will air on BBC One in January.

Meet the young cast of Labyrinth

Based on Kate Mosse’s international bestseller, Labyrinth is a four-hour event miniseries which will take a global audience on a richly compelling journey through the South of France of the present, and the dark and tortured landscape of the Crusades and Cathar massacres of medieval times. Two spirited and charismatic heroines must somehow work together across the centuries in order to save a four thousand year-old secret from falling into the wrong hands.

Jessica Brown Findlay stars as Alaïs Pelletier. Jessica (represented by Troika) made her film debut in the coming-of-age drama Albatross. She also played Rachel in Misfits, and was recently seen as Abi in Black Mirror:15 Million Merits on Channel 4. She also appears in Downton Abbey as the politically engaged youngest daughter, Lady Sybil Crawley.
Jessica began her career as a dancer, training with the National Youth Ballet and was asked at the age of 15 to dance with the Kirov at the Royal Opera House in London for a summer season. It was after this, during her time of study on a Fine Art course at London’s prestigious Central Saint Martin’s College, that Jessica began acting classes, in which she showed great promise and a natural talent.

Vanessa Kirby, recently seen on our screens starring as Estella in the BBC's Great Expectations, plays Dr Alice Tanner. Alice is a woman who inherits a house in France from an aunt she has never met; she stumbles on an archeological find and has to stop a centuries-old secret from getting into the wrong hands. Vanessa (represented by Ken McReddie Associates) as a 2011 Screen International Star of Tomorrow.

After studying at Exeter University, Vanessa turned down a place at LAMDA drama school last year after being offered the opportunity to appear in three productions at the Bolton Octagon: Arthur Miller's All My Sons, Ibsen's Ghosts and A Midsummer Night's Dream, and more theatre roles followed. She also featured in seen in BBC2's newsroom drama The Hour, playing young debutante, Ruth Elms.

24 year old Tom Felton (represented in the UK by Troika) - who portrayed Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter series - takes on the role of Raymond-Roger de Trencavel, Viscount of Carcassonne, who died in 1209 (also at the age of 24) a martyr, trying to protect his Cathar citizens from genocide.

Executive director Tim Halkin stated: "I am very pleased to have found such an extraordinarily talented young actor who is still the same age as the historical figure of Viscount Trencavel. Trencavel was an incredible young man, very wise, and I'm sure that Tom Felton will live up to his memory and legacy."

Synopsis:

Two intelligent headstrong heroines, 17-year-old Alaïs Pelletier from 13th century Carcassonne and modern-day PhD graduate Dr. Alice Tanner experience an adventure that intertwines their lives. Separated by time, but united in a common destiny, both protagonists display tremendous courage, steadfastness and loyalty on their respective quests.
As the parallel storylines set in the southwest of France unfold, both ancient and modern-day conspiracies are unearthed, all revolving around three hidden books – The Book of Words, The Book of Potions and The Book of Numbers. Together, these tomes hold the secret of the true Grail, which dates back to the Ancient Egyptian era many years before Christ.
Alaïs and those closest to her must battle to protect the secret. She soon discovers she can trust no one – least of all her cruelly manipulative sister, Oriane.

Labyrinth has recently completed shooting on location in Carcassone, France and in Cape Town, South Africa, and is a Tandem Communications/Film Afrika coproduction in association with Ridley Scott and Tony Scott's Scott Free Films. It is set for broadcast in Spring 2012.

First look at Skins Series 6

The Skins Series 5 gang are all set to return along with a new character, Alex, played by Sam Jackson (a member of Northern Film and Drama, now represented by Hamilton Hodell) from Leeds, when Skins returns to E4 for a sixth series this January.

Sam said of his character: “Alex is at first very mysterious, I think he comes across as quite elusive and you’re not really sure what he’s all about. He’s very charismatic and confident in himself and is very flirty, he flirts with both genders, and doesn’t care.

"He comes into the series at a point where the gang are a bit down, they’re very unhappy and he finds it difficult to make friends with the gang, they don’t really like accepting someone new but he manages to befriend Liv who takes a shine to him and you see their friendship develop and eventually he gets into the gang, bringing them some much needed excitement and energy.”

“I’m the new boy so meeting the gang at first it was a bit nerve-racking, I felt a lot of pressure joining because I watched the last series so seeing all the guys on screen and then meeting them and actually joining them, then working with them was a bit scary. But the guys are brilliant and have really looked after me.”

Channel 4's commissioning editor Ben Stoll said it'll be an "explosive and richly dramatic series" and will go "where others daren't", while the show's exec John Griffin said it'll be the "most exciting and adventurous" bunch of episodes yet...

First look at The Impossible

Screenterrier posted the details of the open casting call back in January 2010 to find the three young boys to play the brothers in The Impossible, the story of a family caught in the tsunami that hit South East Asia, seven years ago on Boxing Day, and the casting news back in September 2010.

The film stars Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor, along with the youngsters Tom Holland, Samuel Joslin and Oaklee Pendergast.

Maria (Naomi Watts), Henry (Ewan McGregor) and their three sons begin their winter vacation in Thailand, looking forward to a few days in tropical paradise. But on the morning of December 26th, as the family relaxes around the pool after their Christmas festivities the night before, a terrifying roar rises up from the center of the earth. As Maria freezes in fear, a huge wall of black water races across the hotel grounds toward her.

Henry grabs the two youngest boys, SIMON and THOMAS, but it’s too late: the wave smashes into him with incredible force and dislodges his grip. Maria is pushed underwater, where she is crushed and battered by debris to the brink of death. She finally surfaces in a raging black sea, which has completely submerged her three-story hotel and the surrounding landscape. Maria gasps for breath while she tries to understand what has just happened, convinced that her family has been obliterated in the blink of an eye. But then, her eldest son, LUCAS (Tom Holland), surfaces a few meters ahead in the wild flood. Face-to-face with something unexpected and incomprehensible, she must fight against all odds for her child’s survival. And her own.
