ARTIST INTERVIEW – JAY TAYLOR

What inspired you to become an Artist?

I enjoyed drawing as a child and never stopped enjoying it. My level of obsession as a child kind of puts the current me to shame a little but I still work very hard at it. Complete naivety and blind determination made me successfully pursue it as a career.

What inspires your art?

Social commentary inspires my personal work and my ridiculous eagerness to please inspires my commissioned work. Whatever I do normally stems from reading in some form or another though.

How would you describe your style?

I get asked this question a lot and don’t really have a answer for it apart from; it’s me. It’s the result of many years of experimenting, making countless mistakes and not worrying too much what other people think of it. I remember being told several times at the start of my career that my work wasn’t commercial enough which it turns out wasn’t the case. I stuck to my guns, made the work I wanted to make and made a career from it. I’ve currently got itchy feet to try something completely new. The downside with style is that once you’re known for it, you’re stuck doing the same thing.

Can you explain your creative process?

Ideas/ opinions are pivotal in the initial stages. I’ll sometimes spend more time thinking of ideas than it takes me to make the image. With so many talented people so visible online these days, personality in the work is one of the only things you have left to stand out.

What are you currently working on?

Like I said, I currently have itchy feet and I’m taking my work in a completely new direction. I’m taking a little breather from illustration to work on some more Art based stuff. I’ve got a couple of exhibitions next year of my paintings, which I’m working on as we speak. I’ve been a professional illustrator for 8 years now and was starting to feel a little stale, this has completely reinvigorated my passion for the craft. Dumping Photoshop has been liberating. I’m still working on commercial illustration work as I have a mortgage to pay but I’ve found a nice balance.

What is your current obsession?

My 10 week old daughter.

What are you trying to communicate with your art?

I hope that my philosophies and humor come across.

What do you do to maintain your creative drive and avoid creative burnout?

Try new mediums. Avoid getting stuck doing the same thing for too long. Everything I do outside of illustration is completely unrecognizable to what I’m known for. I’m an experimenter and that keeps things fresh for me. Every piece I do has an experiment in there somewhere, even if only small.

What kind of creative patterns, routines or rituals do you have?

I have a scatter brain of ideas, so meditating has been a big help in focusing me.

Which creative medium would you love to pursue but haven’t yet?

Film.

What role does the artist have in society?

To show the world it’s not all about money.

What jobs have you done other than being an artist?

I was a Scaffolder for two years whilst I built up my Freelance work. If I ever get complacent, I always think about Scaffolding in the winter and I get off my arse and make things.

Favorite TV Show?

Don’t watch much TV but I do religiously watch Dexter.

Favorite Artist?

Hard to pick one but I love many of the artists represented by Lazarides Gallery in London.

Favorite Food?

Chicken.

Favorite Art Magazine?

Juxtapoz

Favorite Band or Musician?

Tom Waits

What are some of your favorite websites to visit for inspiration, exploration and play?

Arrested Motion is my fave.

What was the best advice given to you as an artist?

Always be the dumbest person in the room.

Describe your art in one word.

Disappointment

Many artists struggle to find ways to sell their art. How do you sell your work? How do you market yourself?

The marketing is easy; Do good work and show the right people. It just takes time.

Is there anything, anything at all, on your mind that you’d like to share with others?

England is currently too hot. We’re not built for this weather.
