I caught on to this song, after coming to know recently that Jyothirmayi is marking her presence again. Her new look, enchanting; and Amal Neerad equation all helped keep the eyeballs here. And then this song dropped.

While there are many songs that has grabbed my attention, i dont usually find time to do this. And when i do, it is for myself first, than anyone else. So here is my attempt at getting the lyrics and english transliteration right. The meaning in English is my translation of the verse, its not a literal translation and has my poetic license based on my understanding of the situation (even as the movie has not released).

Periyone Rahamane Lyrics & Meaning (Aadujeevitham)

Periyone is soulful prayer from ARR, for the movie Aadujeevitham, aka The Goat Life. Aadujeevitham is a survival story, that happened in the 90s to Najeeb. Najeeb a migrant worker to the middle-east is kidnapped by an Arab and put in charge of his goat farm, far far away from any civilization, His life there as a slave, and his successful escape and return to Kerala was a story written by Benyamin in a book by the same title.

Periyone is a song from the movie. Actually sung as a hymn by his co-traveller, Hakkim, in the movie. It has to be his prayer, a soulful appeal to the merciless to save them from the harsh dessert, fully parched and arid, and sand that spans the entire universe that they are able to see.

Toward the latter part, the lines are possibly addressed to his love (wife) who is away at his home, waitng for him to come back. And here he is lost, deserted, parched for water and aching for love.

The song is on playing on loop mode. Music is haunting. The words a prayer, to his lord and his love. Both of whom are not able to help him at his time of need. Need for escape, water to quench his thirst, and for his love to hold and console him. Its just mesmeric.

Raasa Kannu Lyric and its meaning (Maamannan)

Raasa Kannu is a soulful melody tuned by ARR, and sung by Vadivelu, from the upcoming movie titled Maamannan, being directed by Mari Selvaraj.

The song was released two days back (May 19th), got to listen to it only late in the evening. At first i was trying to pay attention to how Vadivel was doing his job as a singer. A very talented person, who made his name in comedy in Tamil films. His role as Nesamani is now chiselled in stone in the pages of internet.

Typical of ARR, the song grabs you, and soon you are hooked. Many times you dont get the magic of ARR, because you are lost in the beauty of rendition. Here too. The lyrics has so much to it. If you are not moved by the words, you are not human, but a stone. Never knew the beats of a drum (thavil) can be this soulful. Altho' i think there are other percussion instruments being used too. The string instrument(s) (dont know or cant recognize them) but simple yet exquisite. Only towards the second phase of the song does other sounds add to the harmony. The drum tho' throughout the song remains that heartbeat, constant and throbbing. Typical of ARR again, as you pay attention you hear small tidbits of other sounds come and go, doing their very small but significant impression.

Cherathukal - Kumbalangi Nights - Lyrics

Lil old, compared to recent ones i posted here. But this is a beautiful slow melody from an even more beautiful movie "Kumbalangi Nights". One important lesson was the word "Cherathukal", never heard it before and had to ask around to know it meant "clay lamp, may have come from "cheratta" the coconut shell. Dont know enough of the etymology. Someone needs a build good useful and usable malayalam dictionary.

I happened to come across the term "chayapattu" in a show that Sithara was on. Intrigued me, and search on youtube brought this beautiful, short and sweet song. Lyrics were humble enough, but the music was even more courteous, rendering this lovely song. And its haunting me, as i hear it again and again and again.

Thanks to a few who put out these lyrics, it was easier to construct. However had to make corrections based on my knowledge of thamizh and pronunciations. The english transliteration is even more difficult, trying to match the thamizh letter and match the sounds using english alphabets.

Dont quite recall when or how i was attracted to this tongue twister of a song. It stuck in my head for a long time, but more importantly my mind voice was telling me that i should try this. Just like any other fascinating song. I did, and not able to go beyond the first two words i gave up quickly

Back in 2014 or so, i attempted to decode the lyrics, break the song down and attempt to take a crack at this again. I wrote the lyrics down, stripped song into separate portions, one for each verse of this beautiful song, to allow me to play it in a loop. It worked. I was able to mouth the words "Muthai Muthai tharu pathi thirunakai athikkiRai sathi saravaNa muthi kkoru vithu gurupara ..EnavOthum. (முத்தைத்தரு பத்தித் திருநகை அத்திக்கிறை சத்திச் சரவண முத்திக்கொரு வித்துக் குருபர எனவோதும்)"

Sweet success! But short lived. I couldnt get past that first verse. Worse still that i lost focus and gave up. Fast forward another few years. I think in 2018, i tried again. One verse at a time, added them slowly to my ability to recite. One, one and two, one two and three, and then upto four. Slowly but steadily, i was able to recite without mistakes, the whole beautiful song.

These days i am able to sing the whole poem without flaws from my heart. However i dread recording this, as my sound will do no justice. But i feel quite elated inside as i render this.

Aasai Mugam Marandhu Pochae

"Aasai Mugam Marandhu Pochae" is poem written by Subramania Bharathi, or simply referred fondly as Bharathi or formally with his title as "Maha Kavi" Bharathiyar.

So many of his poems are written with a passion for Kannan. Kannan is an interesting term that used in Thamizh culture. A direct reference to Lord Krishna, who affectionately called as Kannan, specially manifesting as the naughty child constantly upto some mischief. Numerous stories that glorify these acts. But this term therefore also equally applies to that special someone in your life that you love or are fond of.

This poem is written apparently lamenting the loss of a picture of his mother, the only one had (as per numerous sites and references on the web). However he played with words, specially using the term Kannan to allow dual references. Allowing the listener to apply the meaning appropriately.

I came across this song on youtube quite by accident while i was still recovering from my Covid-19 attack. This rendition by Suchitra quickly caught my fancy. Bharathi words, or maybe because heard a few other poems, are relatively easy to grasp and understand. After playing it on loop for sometime, i had find more on the lyrics, meanings. Thats when i came across the story behind the song. These lyrics below are also thanks to many people on the internet.

The english means as usual are mine, using my poetic license and ability to choose the most appropriate words to bring the best of the emotion and love associated with the poem.

The youtube video below of Suchi is the best i found. There were other renditions that attempted to fuse new music, or rendered in traditional carnatic style. The purists dont like her rendition, as is noted by a few on the comments. But there are always these egocentric uncles and aunties, who wont allow any freedom. Well, Suchi has done an excellent job, keeping it simple, and allowing the words to express its emotions and warmth, without overpowering music or using those puristic banal tones. More importantly her pronunciation of Thamizh words are also perfect. It still playing in loop. She unfortunately skipped a couple of verses (3rd and 5th), i guess to keep it short and grasp attention of today's music aficionados. Beautiful, i only wish there was a longer and complete version for people like me.

I heard this song one day, just by accident, playing on my radio while driving home back from work. The lines in bold struck me, as it mirrored many things to me.

I wasnt there the day when my father died. I never spoke to him, like i wished i did. Much much later, i would regret those living years. Every time i hear this and tried to sing along, these words almost always choked my throat. Tears would try to emerge, and like a stupid adult male, i would try my best to resist.

Magic words!

This video clip used to play on TV (Doordharsan) when i was a kid. It stuck there, and was lost forever. But never forgotten. I searched for this many years later and was difficult to locate. Apparently it was not necessarily the best of this genius' comedy.

The movie itself is from the 1940s. I think it is a genius of the times.

Literature (Card Game)

This is a card game, i have played but only once or maybe twice in my life. But it was so amazing and mentally intriguing that i have tried every opportunity to play this. The rules are pretty complicated, in the sense that there is a lot of thinking and logical analysis that is required. The rules are just rules, but the play is how this game is defined. In terms of intrigue and challenge, i find this close to another game i frequently play, called the Twenty-Eight. More about the latter, another time.

After first playing it in 1991, i attempted to lay out the rules and play it again in 1994. But the second time, the team being smaller didn't have the same impact as the first one, which had about 8 players. And then many years later, i had another opportunity to play, but then my mind was wiped clear of most rules. A wasted attempt at trying to explain the strategy and process, in a bid to see if some members of the group i was with are able to remember and add to the rules.

I took to the internet soon after, and spend quite a bit of time trying to find this game and its rules. The biggest problem was i didn't know what we called it. I used to call it "Sequence", but that was not the real name by which this game was referred to. Finally, after several attempts that ran over a few days and months, i was able to narrow down to this beautiful site that had a collection of rules and strategy for many different card games. Pagat, showcased the rules of this game Literature, but now the problem was finding a group to play this. A recent visit to this site showed that Wikipedia hosted a page for the game too.

I am still waiting for an opportunity to play this game.

Hindutva - The Cancer Within

Long back, when i was still in the habit of reading vociferously, a paragraph from a Robin Cook novel, caught my fancy. My love for words and phrases and concepts expressed beautifully with language leave a mark in my memory. I scoured the internet, since i didn't quite remember the title, and finally fount it, Fever. In the prologue, he elegantly described cancer cells.

The poisonous molecules of benzene arrived in the bone marrow in a crescendo. The foreign chemical surged with the blood and was carried between the narrow spicules of supporting bone into the farthest reaches of the delicate tissue. It was like a frenzied horde of barbarians descending into Rome. And the result was equally as disastrous. The complicated nature of the marrow, designed to make most of the cellular content of the blood, succumbed to the invaders. Every cell exposed to the benzene was assaulted.

After the benzene molecules had been washed away by repeated surges of clean blood, the marrow could have recovered except for one stem cell. This cell had been busy for years turning out an impressive progeny of white blood cells whose function, ironically enough, was to help the body fight against foreign invaders. When the benzene penetrated this cell’s nucleus, it damaged a very specific part of the DNA but did not kill the cell. It would have been better if the cell had died because the benzene destroyed the fine balance between reproduction and maturation. The cell instantly divided and the resulting daughter cells had the same defect. No longer did they listen to the mysterious central control and mature into normal white blood cells. Instead they responded to an unfettered urge to reproduce their altered selves. Although they appeared to be relatively normal within the marrow, they were different from other young white blood cells. The usual surface stickiness was absent, and they absorbed nutrients at analarmingly selfish rate. .

They had become parasites within their own house.

Today when i look around me, i see something very similar. Friends, family and ordinary people, in almost every way, they look or feel not any different from me. In all respect, they look almost a very good duplicate copy. But like the story above, there is something very different in their DNA now. They have been changed into a cancerous being, like the white blood cells that were laced with benzene.

Hindutva is cancer that is spreading in India, amongst the Hindus. Claiming to be exactly the same as Hindu religion, supposedly espousing the dharma of righteousness, these cancerous beings are actually seeking the blood of other populace, be it the Muslims, Dalits or rational thinkers. Akin to the cancer cells within the human body, Hindutva supporters are multiplying at a very fast rate, virtually taking over the thinking space.

How do you cure yourself of cancer? It is a tough fight, where you have to literally sacrifice parts of your own body, even if it only provides a slightly better chance of recovery. Hindutva eradication is possibly tougher and virtually impossible. Nazi Germany had to be cleansed through a world war. Hindutva cleansing will possibly require something very similar within India. The cancer is all prevading and multiplying at a great rate. Ironic as it seems, it only fair to say "God help us!"

Koode is a Malayalam movie i saw recently. An Anjali Menon's creation. Once again showing us the kind of magic she can create on the screen. A beautiful love story. A story about a brother and sister, a son and father, son and mother, and also a story about two friends who find each other.

All songs have been tuned beautifully. However this one caught me unawares, rendition tugged at my heart, and drew me to the words, a beautiful poem. I copied the lyrics off from the video on youtube, made a few corrections. Now i know the meanings, or rather the essence of the song. However, i don't think i would do justice if i were to translate this here. I am looking for one, to possibly correct my understanding too.

I got a malayalam version of this transileration, and had to make a few corrections. However i have a feeling there still more to be done. I am trying to get some help to correct this. Its going to take sometime. Once this is done, i am hoping the english translation providing a meaning to this whole song, will not be far behind. Hope, is all i got now.

Tryst with Destiny

Jawaharlal Nehru delivered on the night of 14th August, one of the greatest speeches of the 20th Century. I have heard parts of this many times, as they had been played on the old Doordharshan TV.

As i read it again today, i am touched by one of the architects of the Indian polity. And also saddened as we endeavour to squander it away. A nation that developed its constitution, by adopting from the many around the world, choosing the very best from each, and aptly suited to us, now seems to be consumed in a downward spiral. Pitting relgion, caste, gender and everything possible to divide the people. And instead of aspiring for higher levels of individual freedom and a superior inclusive society, we are taking away rights, considered basic civil and or human rights.

Below is the text of the speech i was able to get from the www.

Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we shall redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially. At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance. It is fitting that at this solemn moment we take the pledge of dedication to the service of India and her people and to the still larger cause of humanity.

At the dawn of history India started on her unending quest, and trackless centuries are filled with her striving and the grandeur of her success and her failures. Through good and ill fortune alike she has never lost sight of that quest or forgotten the ideals which gave her strength. We end today a period of ill fortune and India discovers herself again. The achievement we celebrate today is but a step, an opening of opportunity, to the greater triumphs and achievements that await us. Are we brave enough and wise enough to grasp this opportunity and accept the challenge of the future?

Freedom and power bring responsibility. The responsibility rests upon this Assembly, a sovereign body representing the sovereign people of India. Before the birth of freedom we have endured all the pains of labour and our hearts are heavy with the memory of this sorrow. Some of those pains continue even now. Nevertheless, the past is over and it is the future that beckons to us now.

That future is not one of ease or resting but of incessant striving so that we may fulfil the pledges we have so often taken and the one we shall take today. The service of India means the service of the millions who suffer. It means the ending of poverty and ignorance and disease and inequality of opportunity. The ambition of the greatest man of our generation has been to wipe every tear from every eye. That may be beyond us, but as long as there are tears and suffering, so long our work will not be over.

And so we have to labour and to work, and work hard, to give reality to our dreams. Those dreams are for India, but they are also for the world, for all the nations and peoples are too closely knit together today for any one of them to imagine that it can live apart Peace has been said to be indivisible; so is freedom, so is prosperity now, and so also is disaster in this One World that can no longer be split into isolated fragments.

To the people of India, whose representatives we are, we make an appeal to join us with faith and confidence in this great adventure. This is no time for petty and destructive criticism, no time for ill-will or blaming others. We have to build the noble mansion of free India where all her children may dwell.

The appointed day has come—the day appointed by destiny—and India stands forth again, after long slumber and struggle, awake, vital, free and independent. The past clings on to us still in some measure and we have to do much before we redeem the pledges we have so often taken. Yet the turning-point is past, and history begins anew for us, the history which we shall live and act and others will write about.

It is a fateful moment for us in India, for all Asia and for the world. A new star rises, the star of freedom in the East, a new hope comes into being, a vision long cherished materializes. May the star never set and that hope never be betrayed!

We rejoice in that freedom, even though clouds surround us, and many of our people are sorrow-stricken and difficult problems encompass us. But freedom brings responsibilities and burdens and we have to face them in the spirit of a free and disciplined people.

On this day our first thoughts go to the architect of this freedom, the Father of our Nation, who, embodying the old spirit of India, held aloft the torch of freedom and lighted up the darkness that surrounded us. We have often been unworthy followers of his and have strayed from his message, but not only we but succeeding generations will remember this message and bear the imprint in their hearts of this great son of India, magnificent in his faith and strength and courage and humility. We shall never allow that torch of freedom to be blown out, however high the wind or stormy the tempest.

Our next thoughts must be of the unknown volunteers and soldiers of freedom who, without praise or reward, have served India even unto death.

We think also of our brothers and sisters who have been cut off from us by political boundaries and who unhappily cannot share at present in the freedom that has come. They are of us and will remain of us whatever may happen, and we shall be sharers in their good [or] ill fortune alike.

The future beckons to us. Whither do we go and what shall be our endeavour? To bring freedom and opportunity to the common man, to the peasants and workers of India; to fight and end poverty and ignorance and disease; to build up a prosperous, democratic and progressive nation, and to create social, economic and political institutions which will ensure justice and fullness of life to every man and woman.

We have hard work ahead. There is no resting for any one of us till we redeem our pledge in full, till we make all the people of India what destiny intended them to be. We are citizens of a great country on the verge of bold advance, and we have to live up to that high standard. All of us, to whatever religion we may belong, are equally the children of India with equal rights, privileges and obligations. We cannot encourage communalism or narrow-mindedness, for no nation can be great whose people are narrow in thought or in action.

To the nations and peoples of the world we send greetings and pledge ourselves to cooperate with them in furthering peace, freedom and democracy.

And to India, our much-loved motherland, the ancient, the eternal and the ever-new, we pay our reverent homage and we bind ourselves afresh to her service.

Wonder if we will be able to live upto the ideals expounded here. I know many are trying. We probably need to try harder.

While the song was released a few months back, i heard it first only a few weeks ago. And then the movie came out recently, in time for Onam. As soon as i had heard it the first time, the catchy tune stuck in my head.
But now this has become an internet sensation, kind of like the Kolaveri song. It all started, i think, with a group of girls putting out their dance version in youtube around the time the movie came out. And since then, there has been many a copycat version, original out-do version, yet another unique attempt version etc.

Well, its all over. And with it, the song is refusing to get off my head. I tried my bit to get others go crazy over this, 'cause why keep the hurt to yourself. Joy or madness or pain, it gets better if you share it with friends. So if you havent seen it yet. Then here it is again!
