medical school enrollment

Caring for the sick is not only a responsibility that we share as people of one nation but a moral issue. The millions of Americans who are uninsured, under-insured, or who have to declare bankruptcy due to medical expenses are a growing reminder of the distorted healthcare system that has evolved in our country. The ever-rising costs of insurance, the mounting healthcare costs
burdening employers, the denial of coverage for pre-existing conditions, as well as the lack or portability of existing coverage are all due to the “money-driven” political influence of the health insurance industry, for-profit hospitals, and the pharmaceutical industry. After decades of discussion in Washington, insufficient healthcare reform legislative changes have occurred. Without fundamental reform, the collective health of the American public suffers.

Study of Serum Homocysteine and Vitamin B12 levels in Eclampsia, Pre-Eclampsia, and the effectiveness of treatment with Inj vitamin B12 on the outcome of these patients.

The present study was carried out to evaluate the occurrence of association between homocysteine, and vitamin B12 in patients with Preeclampsia , Eclampsia and those with history of previous PIH. 30 such patients from obstetric ward were studied for estimation of serum homocysteine, and vitamin B12 over a period of Jan10 to Jun 2011. Serum homocysteine and vitamin B12 were determined by means of Immulite 1000 analyzer. The statistical analysis of study group of preeclampsia compared with normotensive control group, showed significant alterations in serum homocysteine, and vitamin B12 concentrations in preeclampsia and eclampsia group. Inverse association between serum homocysteine and vitamin B12 levels were observed in preeclampsia and eclampsia. The present study found hyperhomocysteinemia and deficiency of vitamin B12 along with increased blood pressure as a risk factor in preeclampsia. Final outcome of these patients after Inj Vitamin B12 therapy has improved at par with control group without any neonatal or maternal mortality in all four groups

Statistical Significance: A New Definition

In this essay I show how p-values need to be modified according to study power in order to achieve statistical significance. A case is presented to change the definition of statistical significance from p<= 0.05 to a more robust and meaningful model.

DR. BILL MISNER, Ph.D. WHAT A FREE RADICAL IS AND WHAT IT DOES A free radical (FR) is a highly reactive molecule that contains at least one unpaired electron in its outer orbital shell. Once it is "free" in living tissues, the unbalanced molecule causes multiple cellular damage until it is "neutralized" by a scavenging antioxidant enzyme. FR's are perhaps "Public Enemy Number One" to cellular length and quality of life. Their tissue reactions are suspect causes for premature aging, cancer, atherosclerosis, immune function disorders,

IMJ the Science of Sleep

THE SCIENCE OF SLEEP... DR. BILL MISNER, Ph.D.

Most of us, possibly from a disdain of, or a childhood "I-do-not-want-to-miss-something" fear, often resist the nodding and drowsy prodding call to sleep. Even the most mature, modern, health-conscious adult may, at times, view sleep as an unwelcome intruder into their play, work, or leisure activities. The costly expenditure of 27-35%(6.5-9.0 hours/day) of a lifetime, is mostly unconscious, and is therefore no small amount of time. Is it possible to do without it? What are the consequences?
