3A Hong Kong Reventure Show

What an amazing experience this was. Epic in all sense of the word. We need more of this kind of creative energy here, but enough of that. I was there at preview night. Music, food and crowds added to the ambiance of how art can bring people together in a way that leaves you inspired to create!

I was suppose to meet a friend who was flying in just for this, but his flight was delayed. Not to worry we were there for the next few days and got to really absorb everything from the show. Ashley Wood, Rufus Dayglo and William Wray were amazing with their time they shared with all their fans.

I do need to make a special shout out to Rufus Dayglo who totally made my little girls fall in love with going to art shows! Thank you sir for being awesome to them!

Things I took from this was creative energy, something that is not abundant in this neck of the woods. For someone who writes for a living (yes, you can pay the bills with writing), it was a much needed boost to remind me what it's all about. Ash was insightful and forth coming with his opinions about that and can't thank him enough for that.

As for the friend that came over for this, he is a rocking-cool-dude! Glad to have geeked out and experienced many unexpected epic moments with the Mark Torres, artist extraordinaire!

Ocean Park's Old Hong Kong Street

Ocean Park has a new addition of old. Old Hong Kong is a throw back in time of the 60s to 70s. Food stalls to the theme park games, as well as the detailed decorations give this new addition a great time travel of a Hong Kong most have never seen.

Birthday Trip to Taipei

Usually my birthday brings blizzards and ice storms, but this year was quite different.
I went to Taipei for my 30-something birthday. Last time I was here was back 20-something years ago. Things have changed from the last tike I was there.
The traffic isn't as insane. People were way nicer and the creative culture is very vibrant.
The food as always was amazing!
I will come back without question and explore more of this wonderful place and people.
Now for a photo parade!

I'll be adding more later on during the week. Trying out a new phone at the moment to see how it looks.

Junk food for thought

There's some really interesting flavors for chips here. I've tried some and others are on my to do snack list.

Okay one isn't really chips, but noodles that are bunched up and cut into round pieces. Not sure what to call it. Noodle chips? Looks interesting enough to try out. 7-Up with golden dragons makes it taste better...right?

Shek O

Spent the afternoon hiking in Shek O, one of last old school villages in Hong Kong. It's the only places you can surf here and enjoy a slower pace of life. Located in the southeast of Hong Kong island. The views here are spectacular. You can read more about it here.

There's even an old school mini golf course built with an ancient China theme by the parking lot, which is close the the village and access to their beach. The homes are clearly renovated with expats in mind, as you can see by the colours and larger windows. Still there are some homes that are still rocking out the 70s vibe. The trees here are large and very dense, which is interesting as this is supposedly the drier part of Hong Kong. It's one of the easiest places to hike and enjoy some fantastic views of Shek O, but enough of all that. Here are some photos I took while I was there for the first time.

Watch Out For That Tree

There's amazing Banyan trees here, but many are dying because of pollution. It's quite sad really. Here we have an example of urbanizing a tree. Building a road around it and for all intents and purposes, making sure no truck or bus crashes into it. If you ever get a chance to come here, keep an eye out on the trees. Their size and insane roots are built around. It's really quite a sight.

Phuket, Thailand 2010

I took a trip with the family to Phuket for a much needed break from the craziness of Hong Kong city life. While there we went Elephant trekking, ate bugs at the night market and of course got some Thai massages. I also finally met Mark Smith. He's another script monkey of such works as Amazing Joy Buzzards, Popgun and The New Brighton Archaeological Society.

We talked online like so many of us do, so it was a blast that he was there for a Thai boxing vacation at the same time. He's a rocking cool dude that cannot tan and shouldn't be driving a scooter, but damn can he write.

I have photos galore and videos of the elephant trekking and Phuket Town Night Market below.

There will be more posts later for sure. Been working and renovating our apartment as of late. Not to mention changing jobs. I'm freelancing at the moment for a cool toy company. For now enjoy these vacation photos and videos of mine.

Madame Tussaud's Hong Kong

We had free passes and it was at the Peak so we invited some of the students from my wife's school to come along. Would I suggest hitting this place? Well, only if you're into such waxy things. It was a mix of celebrities from Hollywood, Asia and world leaders. You can walk it in half an hour. Photos below with commentaries, which you'll need to click to read them.

Lingnan Univeristy Walk-a-thon at the Peak

Last weekend, my wife was doing a charity walk around the Peak. So we took the kids to give support and go for a stroll around the mountain. The views of the city were fantastic and a must do when you come to Hong Kong. This was my first time walking on this path and wish I did when I was visiting many moons ago. Enjoy the photos below. Like so many blogs in this world, this one went on a bit of a vacation. Not my intention, but between my last post and now, I was working on a intense project writing a comic book and film here. Now that I have a breather before more freelance gigs kick in, I'm going to be posting a slew of things. I also picked up a new camera to help forge more posting. So, here we go!

Dragon Boat Festival

Went to the Dragon Boat Festival in Aberdeen this year. There are few event throughout Hong Kong. It was loud and full of people. A great event for the family.

Old school fishing traps. It's interesting seeing that the newer version isn't that far off from the original design.

This was one of the trophies given to the winners. You can see the celebratory roasted pig right next to it.

So with so many people coming to an event, what do you do for seats? Bamboo of course! Bamboo is used everywhere here. It's environmentally friendly and just great to see still in use.

Magazines

In Hong Kong there's a strong commuter population. There's barely no one that owns a car, so public transportation is big here. With it comes wonderful advertising and print media to fill the time spent stuck in the MTR, buses, mini buses and taxis during rush hour.

Of course there's digital media via cell phones. You can use them anywhere here in Hong Kong. Yes, even in the MTR. Thus, magazines have created added value here to entice you to pick up an issue or two. I really think it would work back home. Could you imagine buying a magazine and getting a pair of flip flops? Or how about a backpack!
