I would like to start by saying a huge Thank You to everyone who has reached out during this very difficult time for our family.

All of the emails, cards, and extremely sweet stories about my husband have been very much appreciated. It’s heartwarming to see the impact that he has made on the community over the years.

I would also like to thank my son in law, Shane for all of his work on this project. He has put together the catalogs and is monitoring the website as well as providing support if you need any assistance.

Steve appreciated all of you very much and I hope that his legacy can continue to live on through all of you and your projects.

In Loving Memory

1957 - 2026

Dear Scrollsaw Workshop subscribers, we are heartbroken to let you know that Steve unfortunately suffered another heart attack over the weekend and passed away on Monday, March 2nd, 2026. We were able to be by his side until the end, and we know how much he sincerely appreciated the hundreds and thousands of cards and messages with well wishes and prayers over the past few weeks. He received several handmade gifts that he cherished greatly and had displayed in his room. Every time you cut one of Steve's patterns, please know that you are keeping his memory alive and that he will always be with you.

The visitation will be held at Scott Funeral Home at 2515 Veterans Parkway, Jeffersonville, IN on Monday, March 9th, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. with service to follow.

In lieu of flowers, we have decided to keep his website up and running for right now, so any donations to Scrollsaw Workshop would be appreciated to help cover costs of running the blog as well as other expenses during this time. We will send another update in the next few days with more information on the future of the website. For now, all of the patterns are still available for you as always. We will do our best to respond to messages, but please understand that this is a busy and difficult time for our family.

This is Steve. Just wanted to let you know that I will

be leaving the hospital today. Unfortunately I won’t be going home. I have to go to a rehab facility for a few weeks so they can get me walking again. I was able to walk four steps yesterday so that was encouraging. Thanks again for all the well wishes you have sent.

Good morning. Steve is still recovering in the hospital and wanted to send an update to say Thank You for all the cards, gifts, and well wishes that he has received. This week, we should find out what the next steps are in regards to rehabilitation, so we do not yet have an estimated timeframe for when he'll be home, but he is doing well overall and looking forward to being back with you soon.

A Message From Patty Good (Steve's Wife)

Update on Steve: This is only the second time in 19 years I have ever posted on his website without his permission, but I have his phone with me, and your emails of concern and caring are overwhelming, so I wanted to give an update: yes, he is doing well, but he has had a really rough week. From Sunday in the ER with pneumonia, it went into total respiratory failure and he was placed on a ventilator and into ICU. Thankfully, after 3 days, he came off the ventilator yesterday and is back awake and talking with Kellie and I. 🙏 He remains in ICU with the plan that the cardiologist will place stents on Monday to repair the heart damage. Beyond that, I have not even ventured to ask - we still have to deal with his ankle surgery healing as well. Please continue to pray for him and for us. I am staying here at the hospital with him. Also, this is very isolating for him - if you would like to send him a card to the house, Kellie is going by and collecting the mail for me - I think he would enjoy that! I am keeping his phone away from him or he would be worried about working 🤣

Health Update.

Guys I have had a setback. I am back in the hospital. I have pneumonia that they are treating. I have also had a heart attack. They will do a hearth cath tomorrow. Obviously I am expecting a longer recovery with these complications. Hopefully I’ll get back on my feet at some point.

Gearhead Garage Sign Scroll Saw Pattern

Being a gearhead means you’ve got oil in your veins and curiosity in your bones. It’s someone who loves how things work, especially anything with an engine, gears, or moving parts, and isn’t afraid to get their hands dirty figuring it out. A gearhead doesn’t just drive a car or ride a bike—they listen to the sounds, notice the quirks, and feel when something’s not quite right. It’s about the joy of tinkering, fixing, improving, and sometimes breaking things just to learn how to make them better. Sure, it can look a little obsessive from the outside, but to a gearhead, that hum of a well-tuned machine is pure music.

I would be willing to bet that there are quite a few gearheads in this group. This Garage Shop Sign is for you. I have two brothers who were very good car mechanics. They both had vintage automobiles over the years and did most of the work they needed themselves. My younger brother, Kevin, keeps is family cars running, and he has three grown children, so they have several cars to keep running.

Now let's talk about my ability to repair my truck. I spent 37 years as an electronics technician and worked on half a million-dollar equipment daily. That, I was good at. Working on cars for me is so bad that I had to ask my brother to help me put a headlight in. Headlights used to be easy repairs, but not anymore. I was not clueless but pretty close. I believe that my issue with cars is that I detest working on them. Maybe because when I was young and broke, I spent most of my cash trying to keep my junk cars running.

Whatever the reason for my inability to work on cars, I really respect those of you who can. An oil change now costs over $100 at the quick-change places. When they add on filters and wiper blades, it can get closer to $150. You guys save a lot of cash with your skills.

Big and Small Dog Scroll Saw Pattern

Our dog, Holly, is a small Maltipoo. We once had a neighbor with a Great Dane. When that dog stood up on her hind legs, she could put her front paws on my shoulders and look me straight in the eye. She was huge but incredibly friendly.

Holly would bark and growl at that Great Dane like she actually stood a chance. The Great Dane completely ignored her. It was funny… and just a little bit terrifying. 😄

In this pattern, the big dog is about 8.5" long, and the small dog is 3.25" long. The layers are all 1/4" thick. There are only four interior cuts, so the pattern will not take long to cut.

The Dog Whisperer (Cesar Millan)

I have watched Cesar Millan for many years on his television show. You would think I could have learned some of his animal wisdom. Our dog, Holly, still rules the home. All she has to do is whimper, and I break down and give her what she wants.

If you have never watched The Dog Whisperer, I believe it is a very interesting show. The link below will show you some of Cesar's interactions with dog owners who have issues with their pet dogs. There are some who criticize his approach to training. I am far from one who understands how and why dogs behave, but I like Cesar, so I thought I would share his show. You can judge for yourself.

Vase Scroll Saw Pattern

This vase is 8.5" tall and will hold up to a 1.75" diameter bud vase.

This vase needs good glue joints to be stable. Make sure you allow the glue to completely cure before use. Wood glue typically dries to the touch in 30 to 60 minutes, but it does not completely cure for 24 hours. The joints reach maximum strength when the glue is cured.

UPDATE:

They now have my surgery scheduled for Friday, Jan 16th. I also have a series of pre-op tests today, so it is going to be a busy week. Fence Post Eagle Scroll Saw Pattern

I had never seen an eagle in the wild until we moved back to Indiana 4 years ago. We moved to the outskirts of a small town, which I call the country. Not really country, but for a guy who never lived more than 4 or 5 miles from a K-mart in his life, it feels like country to me.

I was driving into town on a two-lane road and happened to catch the eagle flying to my left side. It took my mind a few seconds to realize what I had seen, so I did not have time to pull over and snap a picture. At first, I thought it was a hawk, but it was far too large for a hawk. As you can tell, I was impressed and surprised to see an eagle.

The length of the eagle pattern is ~ 11.5". It is made up of seven layers of 1/4" and 3/4" thick wood. It is designed to go on top of a wooden fence post. You could also sit it on a deck fence post.

Rose Vase Scroll Saw Pattern

This vase is 10.25" tall. It is cut from 1/4" and 3/4" thick layers. There are three 1/4" thick layers and two 3/4" thick layers. If you only have 1/4" thick wood, then simply cut three of the 3/4" thick layers. You will probably increase the final sanding, but it is one way to complete the project. If you use 1/4" thick Baltic birch plywood it will look fine. I have found that most non-woodworkers like the layered look of the plywood. They often think it is an attractive feature. Woodworkers often think it looks cheap. Funny how that different look can be perceived in different ways.

If you would like to make this for your sweetheart for Valentine's Day, I'm sure it will be well received. Because the Vase is not designed to hold water, you can look for a small bud vase and epoxy it inside the wooden vase. This will allow you to use real roses. Artificial roses for Valentine's Day are just not a good look. And for your sweetheart, you need it to look good.💕

Health Update:

I know a lot of you are probably tired of hearing health updates, but this one will almost certainly affect the blog.

Earlier this week, I had a CT scan on my fractured ankle, and this morning I saw my orthopedic doctor. He told me the fracture hasn’t healed at all, and that surgery will be necessary. Normally, this would be a fairly straightforward procedure, but because I’m diabetic, there are extra complications.

I don’t have the surgery scheduled yet, but they want to do it as soon as possible. I honestly don’t know how many days I’ll miss posting new patterns. My health has to come first, of course, but I’ll be back as soon as I’m able.

This feels pretty strange to write. I’ve been running this blog for 19 years, and I don’t think I’ve ever missed more than three or four days in a row—and that was the year I had the flu.

So, to make a short story long 😄, I’m going to try to pre-post a few days’ worth of patterns. I’ll share the surgery date as soon as I have it.

Today's basket pattern is 8" in diameter, and the pieces are all 1/4" thick. For those of you who are new to the scroll saw, this pattern is a one-board cut. The interior rings are cut from a single board, and then every other ring is rotated to give the basket an open look. Here is what the pattern looks like.

The Buck Deer Mount pattern is at the antlers 9.75" across. The pattern calls for 1/2" and 1/4" thick wood. The pattern is constructed in layers. This is a pattern that you can cut from plywood, and it will look fine.

Back on November 23, 1993, farmer Milo Hanson was hunting near Biggar, Saskatchewan, and folks in the area had been whispering about this absolutely giant whitetail that kept showing up and slipping away. After some tracking in fresh snow and a little “everybody take a spot and watch the exits” teamwork around a patch of willows, the buck finally broke cover—and Milo, running on pure adrenaline, steadied his rifle (a .308) and put the deer down. We are just a little over a month away from Valentine's Day. It is a special day that we set aside to show love and appreciation to the people who matter the most to us. Store-bought gifts are nice, but nothing says I love you more than a diamond...Errrr, I mean handmade gift

This is going to get a little mushy today, but that is what Valentine's Day is all about.

Valentine's Day has an odd history.

Valentine’s Day has roots that mix ancient tradition, religion, and romance. Long before it was about hearts and flowers, mid-February was tied to seasonal rituals in ancient Rome, including festivals that celebrated fertility and the coming of spring. Later, the day became linked with a Christian martyr named Valentine (actually, there were a few “Valentines” in early records), and stories grew over time that he stood for love and devotion—eventually giving the date a more romantic identity.

The “romance holiday” vibe really took off in the Middle Ages, when poets and writers connected February with courtly love and the pairing of birds for mating season. By the 1700s and 1800s, people in Europe and the U.S. were exchanging handwritten love notes, and mass-produced Valentine cards soon followed (hello, lace paper and cheesy lines 😄). From there, it snowballed into the modern holiday—cards, candy, flowers, and all the ways people still use it to say “you matter to me.”

This Happy Valentine's Day Heart Pattern is 8" tall and cut from two 1/4" thick layers. Depending on the wood you use, there are a couple of places that might break if you are not careful. Remember that glue can save a lot of hard work. If something breaks, just glue it back on. Everything will be glued to the backer boards so which gives a reliable glue joint.

Honestly, I got really lucky. Patty is everything a guy could ever want in a wife: loving, smart, kind, and strong. We’ve been together since I was a sophomore in high school. Before I met her, my life was pretty much a train wreck, and Patty and her family completely changed that for me.

Jesus Cross Scroll Saw Pattern plus a Woodworkers Prayer

This pattern might be a challenge for newer scrollers. I normally design my patterns around a drill bit no smaller than 1/16" for interior cuts. This pattern might challenge that metric a bit. There are interior cuts that a 1/16" drill bit will be a very tight fit. There are also interior cuts that are extremely close to another interior cut. I believe that if you need, you can cut those short and be fine. All the interior cuts will be in the 1/4" thick layer, so that should be easier than the thicker back layer.

This Jesus Loves You Cross is 10.25" tall, and the pattern calls for 1/4" and 3/4" thick wood.

Yesterday's Bowling Trophy Pattern had a spelling error. I corrected the pattern around noon, so some received the spelling error, and others received the corrected update. The word CHAMPION had an N in place of the M. Here is the link to the updated pattern if you need it.

Thanks to everyone who emailed me about the spelling error in the original pattern. It is easy for me to become blind to an error if I don't see it in my first edit. Your emails help.

I had a request to make a League Bowling Trophy. They did not just want a generic style trophy, so I designed this pattern. It is close to 2 feet long.

You can also just make a simpler version that is not a trophy for a friend or family member who enjoys bowling.

Sorry, I did not get to make the female version, but I ran out of time. I'll revisit that idea later.

A short history of Bowling.

Bowling’s roots go way back—thousands of years. Archaeologists have found small balls and pin-like objects in ancient Egypt that suggest a “roll a ball at targets” game was being played long before modern lanes existed. Versions of bowling-like games also showed up across Europe over the centuries, especially in Germany and the Netherlands, where people rolled stones or wooden balls at pins (often tied to church or folk traditions). The game that most resembles today’s bowling grew out of these European styles and traveled with immigrants to North America, where it evolved into a popular social pastime in cities and taverns.

Modern ten-pin bowling really took shape in the United States in the 1800s. “Nine-pin” was so popular that some places tried to ban it (mostly because of gambling), and one workaround was simply adding a tenth pin—helping ten-pin become the standard. As the sport got organized, the American Bowling Congress (founded in 1895) helped standardize rules and lane specs, and bowling leagues exploded in the early-to-mid 1900s. Automatic pinsetters (widely adopted after the 1950s) made the game faster and more consistent, fueling a huge boom in bowling centers—turning it into the classic league-night, neon-sign, snack-bar American pastime we know today. This funny 100-dollar bill pattern is 12" wide. There are several small interior cuts, so this is an intermediate-level pattern.

The Broke But Hopeful pattern is 10.25" long and cut from 2/4" thick wood.

Here are five practical money-savers that work really well in retirement (without making life miserable)

NOTE: Saving money for me is like cutting a perfect scroll-saw pattern… except halfway through I go, “This would look even better with a new scroll saw,” and the “savings” turns into sawdust.

I did not come up with these money-saving tips. My brain and money do not get along well at all, so I looked these tips up online. You're welcome. My tip would be to see if I can find a quarter under the couch cushion.

1. Know your “must-pay” number

Add up your fixed basics: housing, utilities, insurance, food, meds, transportation.

Once you know that monthly baseline, it’s way easier to spot what’s quietly draining you (subscriptions, impulse buys, extra trips).

2. Kill “silent” spending (subscriptions + auto-renewals)

Cancel anything you don’t use weekly.

Check: streaming services, phone add-ons, app subscriptions, Amazon “Subscribe & Save,” warranties, gym memberships, cloud storage tiers.

3. Shop insurance like it’s your job (once a year)

Compare Medicare plans, supplement/Advantage, Part D, plus home and auto insurance.

A quick annual review can save a surprising amount—especially if rates crept up.

5. Lower the big three: housing, cars, and food

Housing: refinance if it makes sense, appeal property taxes if you can, or downsize if the math is clear.

Cars: keep them longer, drop coverage you don’t need (carefully), combine errands, compare rates.

Food: plan 3–4 “cheap go-to” dinners each week, buy store brands, and don’t waste leftovers (free money).

6. Use the discounts you already earned

Senior discounts, veteran discounts, store loyalty programs, pharmacy savings programs, utility assistance/discounts, and property tax credits (varies by state/county).

Even small discounts add up because retirement spending is often very “repeat purchase” heavy.

All kidding aside, having enough money to pay the bills is important, but true happiness comes from family, friends, and God.

I grew up listening to the Beatles, Elvis, the Beach Boys, the Supremes, Stevie Wonder, and the Jackson 5, to name just a few of my favorites. In those days, I was aware of the various genres of music, but all I cared about was whether I liked a song. I remember the first time I heard the Supremes' "Stop! In the Name of Love" on the radio, I was hooked on their music. Then there were the Beach Boys with their single. "Surfin". Click those links for a fun, nostalgic listen.

So in my early years, the music on the radio broke a lot of barriers, and Motown was a huge influence on many groups in different genres. After I came back to my office today, I went to YouTube and played some of my favorites. When Marvin Gaye's "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" played, I knew I needed to design this pattern.

Motown Records was founded in Detroit in 1959 by Berry Gordy Jr., who set out to make “The Sound of Young America” — pop-soul hits with tight songwriting, polished production, and crossover appeal. The label ran like a hit factory: in-house writers and producers (like the Holland–Dozier–Holland team) crafted songs, the Funk Brothers laid down many of the signature grooves, and artists were developed with performance coaching and sharp styling. Through the 1960s and early ’70s, Motown launched and supercharged careers for stars like The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, and the Jackson 5, turning Detroit into a global music landmark.

Motown’s influence is everywhere. It helped break down racial barriers on mainstream radio and TV by putting Black artists at the center of American pop culture, and its songwriting approach — catchy hooks, call-and-response vocals, danceable backbeats, and emotional storytelling — became a blueprint for modern pop and R&B. You can hear Motown’s DNA in funk, disco, hip-hop sampling, contemporary soul, and even today’s chart pop, where that “tight band + unforgettable chorus” formula still rules. Honestly, if a song makes you want to dance and sing the hook after one listen… that’s Motown still doing its thing.

The Last US Minted Penny Scroll Saw Pattern

This Last Penny pattern is 8" in diameter, and all the layers are 1/4" thick. I am showing the simulated image with different colors of wood, but that is just to make things stand out for reference. There are some small interior cuts in this pattern, so you may want to consider using a high-quality plywood like Baltic birch ply.

I know that many of you have coin collections. It is estimated that about 17% of US adults consider coin collecting as their primary hobby. I thought I would do a pattern commemorating the last general circulation penny minted. That happened on November 12, 2025.

Can you purchase the official commemorative set of the last pennies?

No, you can't buy the official last penny collection directly from the U.S. Mint anymore, as the special Omega marked pennies (including the unique gold one) were sold in a one-time, exclusive auction by Stack's Bowers Galleries in December 2025 for millions, with set #232 (containing the original dies) fetching $800,000 alone. While the Mint stopped circulating pennies, they still make collector versions, but the final historic ones were auctioned off, making them available only through private sale or auction.

The last U.S. pennies for general circulation were minted at the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia on November 12, 2025, ending a 232-year production run due to high costs and low utility, with some of these historic "Omega" pennies selling for millions at auction in December 2025. While these final coins are special collector items, the penny remains legal tender, and the Mint will continue making pennies for collector sets, but not for everyday circulation.

Key Details

Date of Final Strike: November 12, 2025.

Location: U.S. Mint, Philadelphia.

Reason for Discontinuation: It cost nearly 4 cents to produce each penny, making it an inefficient coin, according to the U.S. Treasury Department.

Collector's Edition: The very last pennies were marked with a special Omega (Ω) symbol and auctioned off in December 2025.

Auction Success: The final sets of these Omega pennies, including gold versions, sold for a total of over $16.7 million, with one set fetching $800,000.

Future: Existing pennies remain in circulation and are still legal tender, but no new pennies will be made for general use.

Poor Memory.

You guys are probably tired of hearing my health updates, but here is one more. My short-term memory is not as good as it was a few years ago. Because of some family history, my doctor and I decided to have an MRI of my brain just to check things out. Luckily, the MRI came back as no acute signs of early dementia. But that still leaves me with minor memory problems. My personal opinion is that it may be related to my very poor sleeping habits. I rarely am in bed before 4am, and while I nap during the day, they are often very short naps. So I probably get 6 or 7 hours of sleep a day, which are often broken up into 1 to 2-hour naps. I'm 68 years old, and what used to not cause issues may not be so friendly at this age.

This morning I have a follow-up appointment with the doctor to see what he thinks and devise an action plan to see if I can improve my memory. My wife is really good at keeping me on track for remembering appointments, so that helps, but I'm sure she would rather not have to remember everything for both of us. The funny thing is that I can remember how many points I had in a holiday tournament basketball game in 1975, but I often cannot remember something that happened yesterday.

Getting old is hard work. 😁

This Hummingbird Plaque measures 13.5" in width. Both layers are 1/4" thick. Yesterday we had temperatures in the 70s, then today our highs were in the low 30s. The sudden temperature change made me wish for Spring. Well, Spring is a ways off, so I had to settle for designing a Springtime pattern of these hummingbirds and creating a song about wishing for spring.

Garden Gnome Scroll Saw Pattern

Let me introduce you to Mr. Noodleleg the Garden Gnome. Mr. Noodleleg guards his garden like it owes him rent. If you want to pick one of his tomatoes, you'd better do it with respect, or you will encounter his rage. His garden is his line in the dirt that you better not cross.

The gnome is about 7" tall, and the full project is 10" long. He has a cactus in his wheelbarrow ready to plant. If you are good with paint, you can jazz him up with some color.
