Match report Syston u14 v Lutterworth, Belgrave v Lutterworth

After a run of matches without a win albeit in some very close games, Lutterworth chose the worst weekend of the season so far weather wise to produce a fantastic team performance which saw off a determined Syston side.

Lutterworth played with the elements at their backs in the first half and proceeded to batter their opponents in unrelenting fashion. Although Lutterworth had the possession and the territory, they found it difficult to finish off their moves, largely due to the inhospitable weather making handling extremely patchy. Despite this, points had to come, and it was Tom Freer who eventually scored from one of Lutterworth's many attacks.

For all their pressure, it seemed to the spectators that one try with the wind at their backs was not going to be enough. At the start of the second half, Syston took the role of aggressor and matched Lutterworth's first half territorial dominance. A try soon came from the Syston pack.

If Syston thought this would result in a crumbling of the Lutterworth team resolve, they were wide of the mark. Lutterworth stepped it up a gear and managed a period of sustained pressure in the Syston half which resulted in a superb controlled try from the forwards in open play. Although the conversion was missed, Lutterworth's dominance was never in question for the rest of the game and in the end were well deserved winners.

Belgrave 20, Lutterworth 0

As part of a double header at Syston, Lutterworth also played a Belgrave side looking for match time. Belgrave started strongly with the wind, or perhaps it was more a case of Lutterworth starting slowly after a difficult preparation in the conditions. Two quick tries resulted before the Lutterworth team got out of their stride. However, when they did get into the game some storming play from the forwards, notably James Fox, carried the Lutterworth team into the Belgrave half. Despite having some pressure, it was always a case of letting the opposition off the hook with one or two missed tackles. Belgrave certainly had the strong runners to take advantage of the lapses in the Lutterworth defence. Tom Reddin, leading from the front, galvanised his troops into greater efforts for the second half. James Fox again led the way, making a 25 metre run to the posts only to be held up over the line.

As time went on, Lutterworth began to tire and Belgrave took advantage with two late breakaway tries to make the score 20 nil to Belgrave. A scoreline which didn't really reflect the effort and level of performance of several of the Lutterworth players, but which also showed the importance of making those first up tackles against strong running backs.

Two more games this week, Hinkley A and a return match against Belgrave, both at Belgrave.

Match Report: Lutts u14 v Towcester

Lutterworth u14 3 , Towcester 7 21st October 2007

Another desperately close game saw Lutterworth u14 take on Towcester and finish up on the losing side. If pressure and possession counted for anything, then Lutterworth would have walked this game. Lutterworth pounded the Towcester line in the early part of the half, the pressure resulting in a well struck penalty from Lemmon. Towcester hit back through a try from close range from their number 8 who was the pivotal player in their side. The res of the game was a story of Lutterworth just not quite making the most of their opportunities. Try as they might, they could not cross the whitewash, and Towcester held firm to run out 7- 3 winners.

The last 20 minutes was played as a development game to allow some meaningful game time for all the players. With Towcester best player, the number 8 staying on the field, it was always going to be a difficult task, but Lutterworth constructed a great try from a scrum in centre field. The ball was moved by Lee-Everton to Luke, who blasted past 2 defenders. When he was finally hauled down, quick hands resulted in a huge overlap, which was converted in to a try. The conversion was narrowly missed by Lemmon.

Match report Lutterworth u14s v Barker Butts

Barker Butts 14, Lutterworth 5; 14th October 2007

A slightly depleted side travelled to Coventry to take on Barker Butts. Unfortunately, as the referee blew the whistle for the start of the game, it quickly became apparent that Lutterworth were still thinking about other things, as the Barkers Butts forwards took control of the ball and executed some very simple pick and drive which coupled with basic support play saw them score near the posts. A conversion was slotted, and Lutts found themselves 7 -0 down without having had a touch of the ball.

The shock of conceding a quick try seemed to galvanise the Lutterworth boys into action, and for the next 25 minutes, Barker Buts hardly ventured back into the Lutterworth half. The pressure was rewarded when following a passage of phase play from Lutterworth, the ball was moved to Conor Warburton who feinted inside then showed his class to take his opposite number on the outside and score in the left hand corner. Lemmon was unable to convert.

Despite having all the possession and territory in the first half, Lutterworth were unable to add to the score, and turned around in positive mood for the second half. The second half was much more even, with Barkers Butts having been read the riot act by their coaches, they began to compete more forcefully at the breakdowns and win more possession. With the Lutterworth forwards tiring under the onslaught, the inevitable score came again from the Barkers Butts forwards and was duly converted.

Despite a huge last effort from Lutts, no further score was added. Final score 14 -5 to Barkers Butts

Match report - Lutterworth u14s vs Nuneaton

Lutterworth 0, Nuneaton 12
After the disappointment of their cup result last week, Luttterworth entertained a Nuneaton side with some key players again unavailable due to injuries and other commitments. Lutterworth were a little slow out of the blocks against a Nuneaton side who were attacking every breakdown with enthusiasm and aggression. With Lutterworth struggling to secure tidy ball at the rucks, progress was difficult for Lutterworth. Nevertheless, the game was fairly even in terms of possession and territory when Lutterworth fell for a sucker cross kick from the Nuneaton fly half. Although the execution was good, the danger seemed to be covered when a mix up near the Lutterworth line allowed the Nuneaton winger to dribble the ball over for a soft try.
One try down at half time, and Lutterworth needed to step up at least 2 gears to get back into the game. The team responded and better ball resulted from set piece and breakdown , Despite the increased competitiveness, Lutterworth didn't really pose a threat to the Nuneaton line, and paid the price when from some quality possession, the Nuneaton backs moved the ball to their right wing. The attack was halted briefly, but Nuns strong running centre collected the ball in support and set off on a mazy cross field run of fully 40 yards through some weak tackling to score near the posts.
With the conversion it was 12 - 0 to the Nuns. Lutterworth then roused from their slumber and threw the kitchen sink at Nuns, but some desperate defence kept their line intact. 12 minutes of continuous pressure on the Nuns line resulted in no score.
Final score 12-0 to Nuneaton.

Match report - Syston vs Lutterworth u14s

Syston 9, Lutterworth 8

Lutterworth were left wondering what might have been, after an indifferent team performance against a well organised Syston side saw them lose in the first round of the County cup.
Lutterworth started well, and seemed to get the better of the early exchanges. This resulted in Lutterworth securing some good field position and the pressure created forced a penalty which Lemmon duly converted. After allowing Lutterworth to gain the ascendancy, Syston forced their way back into the game, and managed to create some sustained play of their own. From a scrum on the Lutterworth 22, the Syston number ten scored from a sweetly struck drop goal to level the scores. The play stuttered towards half time with neither side really gaining the upper hand, thanks in part to some indifferent refereeing.

It was a case of more of the same in the second half with the referee seeming to have more and more of an influence on the game. All the questionable decisions didn't seem to matter however, as Lutterworth put together the best passage of play in the game, creating a chance from which Turnbull scored the only try of the game.

with the score at 8 -3 to Lutterworth the next score was likely to be crucial. It went to Syston, who converted a penalty during a visit to the Lutterworth 22. After that, Lutterworth's team play seemed to desert them, and with their confidence rising, Syston made another visit to the Lutterworth 22, winning a penalty and taking the points.

with the score at 9 -3, Lutterworth threw the kitchen sink at Syston, but try as they might they could not break down the determined defence of the home side.

At the final whistle, joy for Syston and despair for Lutterworth. Final score 9-8 to the home side. Defeat was clearly difficult to take for the Lutterworth players, but credit to Syston, a well organised performance from them just shaded it.

Remebering Dave Turner...

Everyonefrom Minis and Juniors will be very welcome.There will be a Colts game as well as a Second team game later.First team game will kick off at 3.00pm, prior to this there will be aminutes silence and then applause for Dave, coinciding with the releaseof hundreds of red white and green helium balloons.We are hoping to sell these balloons for we think a minimum of £3 each(larger donations obviously welcome) and messages can be written onlabels attached. Match report - South Leicester vs Lutterworth u14s

South Leicester 0, Lutterworth 5
Lutterworth made the short trip to close neighbours South Leicester, with the sad news of Dave Turners passing still hanging over the club. South Leicester started proceedings with a minutes silence, which was observed impeccably by the players, parents and all the South Leicester Mini section who had turned up for training on Sunday.

The game started at a good pace. Lutterworth, despite having a severely depleted squad due to other commitments and injuries, started brightly, moving the ball through several phases in to a strong wind. Both wingers, Collis and Glover, made strong runs well into the South half. As the South number ten used the wind to his advantage, Josh Lemmon fielded the ball safely on several occasions at full back. The pack worked well as a unit, matching south at the breakdowns and maintaining some good possession. Warburton distributed the ball well at scrum half, and with Thacker pulling the strings, Lutts gradually fought their way on top.

In the second half, some tigerish defence from South, notably Platts, repelled Lutterworth again and again from the South line. Eventually in the face of continued pressure, the South line had to give, and it was none other than Rayner who barrelled over with several South defenders in his wake. Lemmon missed the conversion, but with Lutterworth keeping their ascendancy in the second half, one score proved to be enough.

Final score 5-0, and a much improved performance from all the Lutterworth players against a strong South Leicester team. Lutterworth need to continue this level of commitment into the first round of the county Cup to be played next weekend at Syston.

Lutterworth RFCs loss: a message from Steve Leah
"......as some of you may know and I am sure quite a few don't, Dave Turner (under 13's coach) died suddenly on Monday evening in tragic circumstances. Dave was a very well respected member of Lutterworth Rugby Club; he was first team coach for a time and a great friend to a lot of people at the club. He transformed the Under 13's in one season from a bunch of players into a formidable unit who did not lose a game all season.He will be sadly missed by us all and as a mark of respect there will be a minutes silence before the game at South Leicester on Sunday. I will try to let you know of any arrangements for Dave's funeral so anyone who wishes to attend may.

For those of you who didnt know Dave turner, he was a very genuine person. You would be hard pressed to find anyone who had a bad word to say about him. He leaves a wife and family. Please show your respect and support on Sunday. Kick off is 11.00 at South Leicester.

Match report - Lutterworth u14s vs Northampton Old Scouts

The first match of the season for the u14s turned out to be a wake up call for the depleted squad who came up against a strong, committed, well organised Old Scouts team. There was no indication of the likely outcome from the whistle though; Lutterworth started well, moving the ball at pace and recycling through a couple of phases to create a passage of play which took them close to the Old Scouts line.
The Lutterworth attack seemed to spur Old Scouts into action. After repelling the Lutterworth advance, Old Scouts mounted their own attack, a period of pressure from which they eventually scored a disputed try near the posts.
Conceding the first score seemed to deflate the Lutterworth team. with missed tackles contributing to their downfall, they conceded another try following a strong break from the Old Scouts centre shortly after. After this even luck deserted them. After a passage of play in which Lutterworth tried to move the ball through hands, the ball popped loose from a tackle near halfway straight into the lap of the old Scouts centre; a gift that he gratefully accepted with a run in from forty metres out.
Three tries to nil in the first half, and some poor tackling had clearly contributed to the Lutterworth downfall. From the start of the second half there was immediate improvement in the one on one battles with an increase in Lutterworth pressure as a result. however Old Scouts manages to reassert themselves, scoring two further tries from mauls where the defence was decidedly lacking.
A consolation try at the end from a quick lineout between Turnbull and Rayner was no more than that; a consolation. Lutterworth will need to move up a couple of gears as a team if they are to compete against strong well organised sides like Old Scouts.

Notable dates to look out for are the September fixtures against South Leicester and Round 1 of the County Cup. On the 30th December we play Hinckley, 3 very strong fixtures in February against Nottingham, Oakham and Old Northamptonians, strong fixtures in March against Derby and Mansfield, Market Bosworth and hopefully the County Cup final in April.

David's Dad is running a marathon...

Who is David's Dad? Well his real name is Clive, he has far too many surnames to mention here, and he is running a marathon on the 16th of September. The Robin Hood marathon, to be precise. And Clive, he of too many surnames, has kindly offered to do it all in the name of Lutterworth u14s fundaraising! So, if you have been approached by some spotty yoof, mumbling something about marathons, fundraising and tours, now you know what he is talking about. The great and the good of Lutterworth u14 rugby are on the prowl, looking to drum up some monetary support for Clive's sterling efforts. All money raised will go to our new kit and overseas tour fund. Please support us by sponsoring Clive; alternatively you could donate via the button on the right hand side of the page.
Please please support Clive. It is through the efforts of people like him that we can aspire to give our team of players the experiences that will live with them for a lifetime. And all from chasing an egg shaped ball round a field!
