"In the 21st Century, there will be two kinds of company. Those who delight their customers and those who do not. The former will prosper and thrive, the latter will be challenged to survive."

-- Steve Denning, author of The Leaders Guide to Radical Managment

Just over a decade ago, a set of major management breakthroughs occurred. These breakthroughs enabled software development teams to achieve both disciplined execution and continuous innovation, something that was hitherto impossible to accomplish with traditional management methods.

Over the last decade, these management practices, including Agile, Scrum, Kanban, Lean and others, have been field-tested and proven in thousands of organizations around the world. Radical Management℠ distills, builds on and extends these principles, practices and values so that the entire organization can now achieve to apply the magic combination of disciplined execution and continuous innovation.

This course combines Scrum with Radical Management to teach you how to adopt and apply these practices in your organization. As a manager, you will understand your role in a Scrum organization, and as a leader or visionary, you will understand where to take your organization, why your organization must change, and how to lead change from anywhere in the organization.
What would it mean for you, your team, your company and your customers?

This is why people do Scrum!
Are you getting the results you need and expect? Are you able to deliver value to your customers quickly and predictably? Is your business getting the results it needs when it needs them? If not, this workshop is for you!

This workshop is for organizations that are applying Lean and Agile frameworks who want to get the performance, productive and financial results they expect and demand from their investment in agility.

In this workshop, you will pursue two goals:

Achieving Great Execution. Learn to do better Scrum or Kanban to deliver value reliably and predictably so you can delight your customers. Based on what you know and do now, what's good? What's bad? And what is downright ugly? Most importantly, how can you change to execute better?

Creating a clear vision for improving your organization. Create a compelling, clear message that is shared by you and your leadership team that you can take to management, development staff, stakeholders and customer. You can explain where you want to go and why they want to go there too!

Workshop Outline

This is a workshop, not a course, and not a powerpoint binge! Much of the content will be driven by the participants. Here's the plan (which may change depending on the decisions you take in the workshop): You will examine how you do Scrum in your organization. You will reflect on how Scrum has failed you, and how you have failed to be Agile. You will review topics you want to cover in more depth.

You will examine advanced topics, like Scaling Scrum or Radical Management. You will share experiences with other participants and learn how other organizations have solved your problems. You will identify short term improvement potential for your organization, to start applying on Monday morning. Finally, you will create a vision for taking your team or organization forward, so that your whole organization will benefit from being agile!
Description

Scrum
is a simple team-based framework for solving complex problems (like
software development). This does not mean it is easy to do. Every project has its story and it's compromises. Some are healthy, some are not. This course will help you identify issues and develop pragmatic solutions so your team can better achieve that "hyper-productivity" you have been hoping for.

Day 1

Great projects — what makes them great?

Scrum Refresher — Inspect and Adapt, Timeboxing, Scrum Master, Product Owner, Development Team, Product Backlog, Definition of Done, Sprint Planning, Sprint Review, Daily Scrum, Retrospective

The Past — How are you really doing Scrum? What works, what doesn't, how do other companies address your challenges?

Advanced Topics (1) — e.g Scaling Scrum, Bidding a fixed-price project, Working with an offshore Scrum Team.

The Present — How has Scrum failed you? How have you failed Scrum?

Questions and Answers

Day 2

The Future — Create a Compelling Shared Vision for your organization. How are you doing Scrum three years from now?

Advanced Topics (2) — e.g Leading Change, Delighting the Customer, Disruptive Innovation

Remembering the future — How did your organization achieve the state you envisioned?

Problem Solving — What is your biggest impediment and how can you solve it?

First Steps — What will you do differently Monday morning?

What can you do? Leadership Storytelling represents a new/ancient approach to change leadership which engages people. Your change becomes their change and the change initiative can take on an energy and life of its own!

Part of the Radical Management MasterClass Series

Register Now...!

Description

We humans have used stories to preserve and change culture, to transfer skills and to inspire people to dream big for centuries, even millennia. Yet today most change initiatives fail exactly because we ignore culture, experience and do not have a clear vision and focus on tools and processes instead.

In this course we will dive into Storytelling as a tool to help change initiatives. We will practise value stories to shape the organizational culture and with teaching and vision stories to help you create lasting change.

"My Specialties are Storytelling, Leadership, and Software Development.

"As 'World-betterer', my vision is to literally turn businesses upside down. Traditional
management practices have brought us a lot, but are now mostly outdated.
They relied on a model where senior management did the thinking and the
rest of the organization did the work.

"Our environments are changing so rapidly now, that that model has to
change. Leadership needs to come from the people in the trenches. Only
by training, empowering and trusting them can we make the changes
necessary to get ourselves out of this mess we created."

Audience

This Workshop is intended for formal and informal leaders at all levels, who want to change their organizations or even the world for the better!

If you are a Change Agent, Scrum Master, Scrum Product Owner, Line Managers or other Leader who is struggling with implementing change in your organization, this course is for you!

You may of course register alone, but optimally, several people from your organization should attend: If your Line Manager comes too, your ability to implement your proposed changes may be even better!

As global competitiveness comes to the software development industry, the search is on for a better way to create first-class software rapidly, repeatedly, and reliably. Lean initiatives in manufacturing, logistics, and services have led to dramatic improvements in cost, quality and delivery time; can they do the same for software development? The short answer is “Absolutely!”

Of the many methods that have arisen to improve software development, Lean is emerging as one that is grounded in decades of work understanding how to make processes better. Lean thinking focuses on giving customers what they want, when and where the want it, without a wasted motion or wasted minute.

What does this mean in practice? That is
what this workshop is all about.

This intensive two day workshop aimed at leaders will help you apply lean principles such as Rapid Response, Constant Learning, Built-in Quality, Local Responsibility and Global Optimization to software development.

In two intensive days of discussion and exercises, leaders will come away with a new frame of reference for thinking about how world class organizations develop software-intensive systems.

Agenda

Systems Thinking -- Putting on Customer Glasses & Value Stream Maps

Technical Excellence -- Correct by Construction & Basic Disciplines

Reliable Delivery -- Managing Workflow & Scheduling

Great People -- People Who Care & Leadership Roles

Relentless Improvement -- Seeing Problems & Solving Problems

The Journey -- Aligning Mental Models & Making Change Happen

You will learn:

How to look at your process from a customer's point of view and identify waste.

What's wrong with software testing and what you have to do to fix it.

How to frame risk and rethink scheduling to permit confident promise-dating and reliable delivery.

The traits of people who work in the most effective system development organizations.

The leadership roles that support the lean framework.

Tools for solving problems that everyone in the organization can use.

How to change when change is hard.

Learn first hand from Lean thought-leaders Mary and Tom Poppendieck how to apply Lean Principles to your organization. Mary and Tom have pioneered the application of Lean Thinking to software development and documented their principles in three books:
Using iterative, incremental techniques, Scrum harnesses self-managing, cross-functional teams to improve productivity and quality, and provide actionable information and techniques for managing risk and return on investment every iteration. This course teaches people in leadership and management roles how to use Scrum to achieve these benefits.

Why?

Agile management is as radically different from traditional management as agile processes are different from traditional methodologies. Rather than plan, instruct and direct, the agile project manager facilitates, coaches and leads. This person is called a ScrumMaster in the Scrum agile process to denote the difference and remind the person filling this role of the new responsibilities. Accepted participants learn how to be a ScrumMaster and how to make a development team, a project, or an organization agile.

The ScrumMaster is the person responsible for the proper execution of Scrum and all change within the engineering and overall organization. Exercises, case studies, and examples used to bring home the realization of how to be a ScrumMaster. All participants are expected to understand Scrum basics prior to attending this course through reading material on the web or perusing the book, “Agile Project Management with Scrum” by Ken Schwaber. This course is "how to" not "what."

Goal

Each individual is trained to be able to assume the following responsibilities:

Remove the barriers between development and the customer so the customer directly drives development;

Teach the customer how to maximize ROI and meet their objectives through Scrum;

Improve the lives of the development team by facilitating creativity and empowerment;

Improve the productivity of the development team in any way possible; and,

Improve the engineering practices and tools so each increment of functionality is potentially shippable

Topics:

Fundamentals of agile and Scrum, running Scrum projects, planning and scaling Scrum projects, offshore development using Scrum, bidding on fixed price/date contracts, and ensuing the adequacy of engineering practices. The agenda for the class is:

Introduction

What is Scrum and Why does it work?

Nuances on Using Scrum

Done

Planning Releases and Sprints

The Sprint

More Nuances

The ScrumMaster – Fact and Myth

Teams – Source of Joy and Frustration

Scaling Scrum to Large Projects and Enterprises

Course Material

Approximately one week prior to the course, all materials, methodology and training materials will be made available to confirmed attendees. An individual license to use these materials will be issued to those attendees who successfully complete the certification program.

Pedigree

The Certification program was started in April, 2003. There are already over 22,000 Certified ScrumMasters. As a result of their successful completion of the program, each participant received an individual license and copy of the Scrum methodology, Scrum training materials, and Scrum software. In addition, Certified ScrumMasters are authorized to participate in "open" development of the Scrum methodology and software, ensuring a growing body of knowledge from a qualified, competent group of certified professionals.

Your Trainer

Ken Schwaber is one of the co-developers of the Scrum process and an Agile and Scrum evangelist. He is a signatory to the Agile Manifesto and founded the Agile Alliance and the Scrum Alliance. He has been a software and product developer for most of his long life. Microsoft Press recently released his newest book, "The Enterprise and Scrum".

Using anecdotes and experiences, Ken teaches the class the Scrum methodology and how to use it to be effective as an agile manager - the ScrumMaster.

Registration

Language: English

Location Zurich, Switzerland — Digicomp Academy, Limmatstr 50, 8005 Zürich

Time: Coffee and Registration 8:00, Course Times from 8:30 to 16.30 (with 17:00 for overflow)

Lodging: please contact us if you need help selecting a nearby hotel.

Prices and Dates: June 2 & 3, 2009.
Have you been wondering how to get your CEO's attention long enough to have a conversation about agile? Here are 8 questions, inspired by Rob Thomsett, long time Agile Evangelist and keynote speaker at this year's Agile Business Conference in London:

Are project management and development free of bureaucracy?

Are projects delivered fast enough?

Are the project business cases well developed and managed?

Is the level of transparency around projects sufficient?

Are Steering Committees effective?

Are the progress reports you receive accurate?

Have you ever been, or do you expect to be ambushed about a project you are sponsoring?

Chances are good your top management will answer 'no' to most if not all of these questions, except for the last one. These are all symptoms of disease. This disease has no name, but it is closed, dishonest and distrustful. It poisons the atmosphere and prevents effective communication.

Agile is about openness, honesty, trust, courage, and an ethical attitude towards money. Agile can cure the disease, but is not without side effects: a dramatic cultural change in your company.

By asking the questions, you should have gotten his attention. The eighth question is, 'do you want the cure?'

BTW - Ambushed means that a peer (i.e. rival in the company) learned bad news about your project before you did and surprised you with it in meeting in front of all your peers. Very embarrassing. Operational staff often learns about an ambush through a very heated discussion with said top manager after the fact.

Update - Have you tried these questions on your CEO or executive management? How did it go? Leave comment with the main article, 8 Questions for Your CEO

Agile PM with Scrum (in German) Zürich - September 9 & 10, 2008

Next Scrum Course in German: Agile Project Management with Scrum this September in Zürich:
Changes, additions or customers own terms and conditions are not valid unless confirmed in writing by Saat Network GmbH. The terms do not cover other products and services of Saat Network GmbH.

Registration

The number of participants is limited. Registrations are processed in the order received.

You agree to provide correct, complete, and up-to-date information necessary for processing and invoicing your registration. A valid email address is required to correspond with you. Your registration will be processed electronically on our own systems and/or on “cloud” services, which may or may not be located in Switzerland.

You agree that we may process your registration as described and that we may share this information with partners if necessary for processing your registration or holding the course. Other uses, including transmission to the Scrum Alliance for certification purposes or further communication with you after this course, require your explicit approval. Saat Network GmbH does not make customer data available to third parties for marketing purposes.

Course Fees and Discounts

Payment is due with your registration. The published price less any applicable discount at the time of your registration is the price you will be invoiced. Payment is due within 30 days or before the start of the course, whichever comes first. Prices are subject to change without notice. We accept Swiss Francs and Euros.

We may offer discounts on regular course fees. To qualify for the discount, you must claim the discount when you register. Published discounts are subject to change without notice. If you qualify for multiple discounts, the discount that applies is the one most beneficial to you. Discounts do not accumulate. If you qualify for a discount based on membership in an association, you give us permission to verify with the association that you are a member in good standing.

Participants who have not paid in advance may be required to pay at the door.

If registrants wish to reschedule a registration within 10 working days before the start date of the class, they will be subject to a €100/CHF 125 course change fee.

For reservations with 3 or more participants in a single course, the date and number of participants is binding as soon as your reservation is confirmed.
