Antsy Pants is a French anti-folk band featuring Kimya Dawson on lead vocals. The band contributed two songs to the soundtrack of Juno. They released their self-titled debut album on plan-it-x records in 2006. It is available here http://www.plan-it-x.org/artist/antsy-pants-kimya-dawson-/ Antsy Pants is part of a musical movement called “skankoustic” that was started by a Erie Pa band called Nine Brothel Heist.

“chris clavin, from plan-it-x records asked kimya dawson to record a song for the plan-it-x compilation cd. kimya was on tour in europe and didn’t really feel like writing and recording a song on her own. she saw this as the perfect opportunity to fulfill her dream of starting a band with leo from bear creek, her 12 year old hero. she asked leo to record a song with her and he was excited to do it. she thought it would be really fun to get a bunch of her other friends in annecy, france involved too. so she got together with leo, angelo spencer, ben lupus, jane kidder, billy jet pilot, howard hughes, and her friends jarrod and emily (from port townsend, wa) who were on tour as the solvents. they recorded the song “amazing kids doing amazing shit”. it was so fun they decided to make a whole album. so some fun collaborations, great singing by marie, awesome hang outs, and trips to the ice cream store later the album was done.

CocoRosie are an American duo that was formed by sisters Sierra (Rosie) and Bianca (Coco) Casady in 2003. Sierra and Bianca Casady are American half-Cherokee sisters. Sierra, the older of the two, was born in Iowa, and Bianca was born in Hawaii. Their mother nicknamed them Rosie and Coco, respectively, from which their musical act takes its name. Stylistically they may be assigned to the indie rock, psych folk genres, and are sometimes associated with the new weird america movement. Sierra plays the guitar, the flute, and leads vocals.

One autumn, two winters and one summer. That is how much time it took for Geneviéve Castrée to change her musical identity from "Woelv" to "Ô Paon". Two years of gestation and four visits to Montréal's Hotel2Tango recording studio. Courses announces from the start its difference from previous records by Geneviève. The sky is heavy and the universe got darker. The lyrics are more solemn, exploring the shadowy parts of our society: wastelands, greed, the absurdity of power, violence, loneliness.

Thierry Amar (Silver Mt. Zion, Black Ox Orkestar, Godspeed You! Black Emperor) expertly arranges the recordings, adding a particular texture to the songs and even playing the role of translator for certain ideas. Courses is a record built on loops, rich with vocal and musical repetitions leading us inexorably where it wants to: what Geneviève sees as this decline unfolds. She captures the moment without cynicism or judgement (« Je t'ai vue seule et abandonnée » - I saw you alone and abandoned). Sadness contemplates sadness. Geneviève seems to tell us that life is a race already lost, and wonders what we are running after, "But don't bet on my horse, he is too tired.". Occasionally anger takes over and the musicians (Nadia Moss, Sophie Trudeau, Jonah Fortune, Julie Houle et David Payant) unite and bring their power to raise a storm. Humans and horses speed in chaos, not knowing where they are going and not caring about obstacles.

Courses is available on vinyl and compact disc. As usual, the cover is carefully drawn by Geneviève herself and English translations are included on the lyric sheet.

High Places channels the spirit of school bus sing-a-longs, back country camping trips, and first prize science fair projects, while conjuring dreams of faraway places through the use of field recordings, contact mics on houshold items, wind instruments and electronic thingamabobs.

High Places began as an experiment in collaboration: two people with diverse artistic backgrounds coming together to merge their skills, aesthetic tastes, and music-making approaches. Robert Barber grew up listening to punk and hardcore, and Mary Pearson studied bassoon performance, but both gravitated toward a DIY compositional style and a love of layers. It is the affinity for layering that has thus far defined the duo, both in ideas and instrumentation.

Grass Widow

The San Francisco band Grass Widow braids apparitional vocals over distorted post-punk riffs. At the center of its songs are the troika harmonies of Lillian Maring (drums), Hannah Lew (bass) and Raven Mahon (guitar), who contribute vocals equally, echoing the band’s process.

Grass Widow’s lyrics, matched with its cautiously joyous beats, reflect its vision of the world: a mysterious Ozlike land in which the surface looks radiant and colorful but with a thinly veiled underside that reveals a fearful and fateful ethereal reality.

Grass Widow plays for gorillas Gigi, Kiki, Kira, Kimani, Kambiri and Kit, at the Franklin Park Zoo in Boston, Massachusetts.

The story of The Books began in 2000, when Nick Zammuto and Paul de Jong met through a friend in New York City. Sharing similar interests but different backgrounds in acoustic music and found sound, Zammuto and de Jong took their sonic experiments to the studio. Eventually, with some urging by Tom Steinle of Tomlab Records, they created what would become their debut record, ‘Thought for Food’, in 2002.

Prior to playing with Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, Gary War, Kurt Vile, and Panda Bear, Robert Robinson made dreamy, bedroom-pop music on his own in Enfield, Connecticut. Bearing resemblance to a psychedelic cassette played on a broken boom box, his first self-titled Sore Eros CD-R was released on his independent label Light Dead Sea in 2003. Over the next few years, Robinson traveled around the country and collaborated with fellow lo-fi musicians before moving back to Connecticut in 2007 to assist his dad, who had recently suffered a heart attack. In his downtime, as his father made a full recovery, Robinson recorded Second Chants as a tribute to his dad’s second chance at life. The album was released in 2009 on Shdwply Records.

Woods began in the woods, at the foot of Bear Mountain. In the earliest days it was a collaborative improvisational group with two core members and several guests, known as “woodsists.” Shortly thereafter, Jeremy Earl and Christian DeRoeck emerged from the woods, dusted themselves off, and began to walk upright. The two woodsists immersed themselves in human culture, learned to craft a melody, to wield a tambourine, to construct a crude phonograph from spare bicycle parts. They learned the value of a cassette. Jeremy and Christian returned to the woods and shared their newfound knowledge with the other woodsists. The result was Woods, songs and improvisations by outsiders, inspired by the human experience.
