This inclusive interdisciplinary conference aims to explore all aspects of free speech at the beginning of the 21st century with a view to forming a selective and innovative publication to engender further research and collaboration.

Freedom of speech – the right to speak out, to debate, to criticise, to disseminate information on matters of public importance – is one of the most basic of human rights. Article 19 of the United Nation's Universal Declaration of Human Rights holds that "everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression." The constitutions and laws of countless countries protect the free-speech rights of individuals and journalists, reflecting the crucial role that the free dissemination of information, news and debate plays in democratic systems of government. Yet the right to speak out, to inform, to report and to openly debate is not absolute. Nor is it enjoyed by everyone, everywhere. This fundamental human right is under attack in many societies, and on many fronts.

Some governments pay lip service to guarantees of free expression; others actively censor or repress citizens, political opponents and the media; still others use punitive laws to control, punish and silence critics. The role of the news media as a check on official corruption and wrongdoing is under attack, as governments use threats, intimidation and even violence against journalists who expose and criticise. Misleading information and hate-driven commentary spread via social media platforms are manipulating public opinion, warping political debate and polluting the public sphere. Meanwhile, social stigma and excessive political correctness create intolerance, stifling debate and demonising some speakers. And although defamation laws and human rights codes regulate and penalise those who would use speech to harm and denigrate others, ethnic and racial groups continue to the targets of hostility and hate speech.

In western countries where speech is largely considered to be free, notions such as "post truth," "alternative facts" or "fake news" are making headlines, making us wonder about the responsibilities that come with public speech and about where the line should be drawn an individual's right to express themselves freely and society's right not to be wilfully misinformed.

This inclusive interdisciplinary conference aims to explore all aspects of free speech at the beginning of the 21st century with a view to forming a selective and innovative publication to engender further research and collaboration.

What can we say about governments, corporations, ethnic groups, and each other? What are we forbidden from saying, and what is the impact of these restrictions? How does censorship in all its forms – official, interpersonal and self-censorship – affect public discourse? What are the legal and political limits on freedom of speech, and how do these limitations vary between countries and between systems of government? How are the Internet, social media, and other communications technologies expanding free speech, and in what ways are these new modes of communication eroding this fundamental freedom? How are statements that promote hatred or defame others disseminated in today's world, and how are these corrosive forms of speech prohibited or controlled?

Our main goal is to facilitate dialogue and spark innovative collaborations and discussions at an international level, in a dynamic and interactive setting. Thus, we welcome participants from all relevant disciplines, professions and vocations, such as journalists, publishers, lawyers, media and communication experts and researchers, sociologists, media and journalism studies specialists and other social scientists, members of NGOs and think tanks, policy makers, professors and educators in relevant fields, professional bloggers and more. Presentations, informal talks, workshops, directed discussions, performances, screenings and other types of interactive and multimedia engagement might address themes such as (but not limited to):

How free is speech in today's world – restrictions on free speech across countries, regions and between regimes and forms of government
Where and how is the news media under attack, and what are the implications of these attacks for the media's freedom – and ethical duty – to report the news, and for the watchdog role of journalists? How do these attacks threaten political diversity, stifle political debate, and undermine democratic systems of governance?
Power, discrimination and freedom of speech – who are the voiceless?
State censorship in an age of instant communication and social media – how effective is it, and how is it changing?
Private-sector practices meant to silence competitors or critics
Free speech vs. true speech – post truth, fake news, alternative facts and journalistic integrity
Free speech, the internet and social media
Social and inter-personal forms of censorship (political correctness, self-censorship, cyberbullying, social media shaming) and their impact on public discourse.
The corrosive effect of allegations of "fake news" on political debate and on public trust in the media, politicians and governments.
What role do Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms play in empowering users and in promoting free speech? How do trolls, anonymous postings, advertising and the creation of virtual communities harm or threaten free speech and the free exchange of information and ideas?
Free speech, intolerance and education: Who enjoys the right to speak freely in educational settings? Should certain books, speakers and alternative points of view be restricted or banned, and who decides who is heard? How do calls for tolerance, sensitivity and "safe spaces" affect learning and academic debate on campuses?
The role played by civil society (NGOs, individuals) in challenging official acts of censorship
Legal aspects surrounding the protection or limitation of free speech (defamation laws, human rights acts, protections against invasion of personal privacy etc.). How are they evolving? What are the challenges and implications for freedom of speech?
Best practices in ensuring and protecting freedom of speech
Free speech, personal and collective responsibility (when words lead to harm, who pays the price?)

What to Send
The aim of this inclusive interdisciplinary conference and collaborative networking event is to bring people together and encourage creative conversations in the context of a variety of formats: papers, seminars, workshops, storytelling, performances, poster presentations, panels, q and a's, round-tables etc. Please feel free to put forward proposals that you think will get the message across, in whatever form.

300 word proposals for participation should be submitted by Friday 12th April 2019. Other forms of participation should be discussed in advance with the Organising Chair.

All submissions will be minimally double reviewed, under anonymous (blind) conditions, by a global panel drawn from members of the Project Development Team and the Advisory Board. In practice our procedures usually entail that by the time a proposal is accepted, it will have been triple and quadruple reviewed.

You will be notified of the panel's decision by Friday 26th April 2019.

If your submission is accepted for the conference, a full draft of your contribution should be submitted by Friday 23rd August 2019.

Abstracts and proposals may be in Word, PDF, RTF or Notepad formats with the following information and in this order:
a) author(s), b) affiliation as you would like it to appear in the programme, c) email address, d) title of proposal, e) body of proposal, f) up to 10 keywords.

Conference on 'Folk Belief' and 'The Supernatural in Literature and Film'

Why are some places especially prone to associations with the supernatural? Might it be because of liminal geographies, of the complex histories of ancient human landscapes, of fear about what lurks in the darkness? Are communities' beliefs shaped by the environments in which they live, or does the recurrence of certain belief across environmental and geographic divides suggest that place is ultimately irrelevant? When we read a book or watch a film with supernatural themes, is the setting just window dressing, or can the mountains, the palaces, the forests, the skyscrapers be characters in their own right?

Previous conferences in this series have been held on remote islands (Shetland's North Isles, 2014), in a hyper-dense city-state (Macau, 2015), and in the polar night (Svalbard, 2017). In 2019, the conference will go farther and higher than ever before, venturing up into the wild mountain valleys of and ancient cities of Georgia, a country at the crossroads of East and West.

This conference considers the themes of 1) folk belief, legends, and vernacular religion and 2) the supernatural in literature and film. We will combine academic presentations with explorations of communities in Georgia's Svaneti and Tbilisi regions. Special emphasis will be given to the question of the role that 'place' plays in the conceptions of the supernatural: from folk narratives to local religious traditions; from the monsters, fairies, and witches of cinema to the miraculous in literature. Could these tales and customs occur just about anywhere? Or do they take place in the just the place they need to be?

About Svaneti & Tbilisi, Georgia: Svaneti, located in the Greater Caucasus Mountains, is the homeland of the Svan people. The conference will be held in Mestia, a village on the Inguri River in Upper Svaneti. The conference group will also travel to Ushguli, which at an altitude of 2100 meters above sea level is among the highest settlements in Europe. Although peripheral to the great kingdoms and empires of the region, Svaneti's control over the mountain passes made it strategically important in ancient times. Svaneti's dramatic natural landscape of mountains, glaciers, and rivers has sculpted strong cultural traditions and contributed to the preservation of its exceptional built heritage in the form of hundreds of distinctive tower houses and scattered valley villages. As a result, Upper Svaneti was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1996.

The conference begins and ends in Tbilisi, Georgia's capital city. Tbilsii lies on the ancient Silk Road between Asia and the Mediterranean and has long been a meeting place for cultures. Delegates will explore Tbilisi's rich historical tapestry, including its exquisite Medieval old town. We will also visit the nearby ancient city of Mtskheta, home to Svetitskhoveli Cathedral and Jvari Monastery.

About the conference: Delegates should arrive in Tbilisi on 24 September to participate in a tour of Tbilisi and Mtskheta on 25 September. On 26 September, the group will travel to Mestia in Svaneti, a day-long trip including stops along the way in the historic cities of Kutaisi and Zugdidi. On 27 and 30 September, we will explore Mestia and its surroundings, including Chalaadi Glacier and the village of Ushguli. Conference presentations will be held in Mestia on 28-29 September. On 1 October, we will return to Tbilisi, with stops around the ancient city of Gori. Delegates can depart Tbilisi from 2 October.

How to make attend and make a presentation: Presentations are welcome on all aspects of of either folk belief or the supernatural in literature and film, though we encourage delegates to address the theme of the role of place in conceptions of the supernatural. Presentations last 15 minutes and will be followed by around 5 minutes' question time. Note that, due to the 'remote' location of the conference, audio-visual aids will not be available for presentations. The final deadline for abstracts is 31 March 2019. The Representational Art Conference 2019 is the premier international event focused on cutting-edge representational art in the 21st Century.
A conference for studio artists, curators, thinkers and writers.

This year we are especially interested in the relationship between imagination and 21st Century representational art.

Imagination lies at the heart of art. Without it, creativity is impossible. But what is it, how is it employed, and what is its role in representational art? It is a term that everybody celebrates, but it is also (depending on how it is understood) the locus of fundamental disagreements about the nature of the artistic enterprise. This year's TRAC invites artists and thinkers to reflect together on the imagination's role in representational art. We invite submissions on a range of topics related to the imagination, such as:

In the early 20th century, fashion and photography were indelibly wedded through the efforts of a number of photographers, fashion designers, and magazine publishers. Once these cultural power shapers created the form, fashion photography took on a life of its own and became - perhaps always was - art. This art form has since been elevated to heights such that being a fashion photographer can be seen as a very important chapter in many well-known photographers' career: designers rely on them; models request them; magazines use their work: celebrities choose them for shoots; and the power they have to represent others is beyond compare in today's, 21st century image-driven world.

Following our first Fashion and Photography conference in 2018, we are now including the subject of Performance for the next phase of the project's evolution, further broadening the interdisciplinary mix and range of potential discussions and activities. Whether dance, theatre, drama theory, directing or performance practice, the different aspects of the performing arts will be explored and developed, especially with the new challenges of technology along with the changes in audiences and performers in the 21st century.

Our Global Fashion, Performance and Photography event will examine the dynamics of all these (and related) fields. In a world which is experiencing the transforming realities of globalization, with people engaging at all levels and in diverse ways, the intersections and engagements created at the interface nexus of these three modes of representation are paramount. They involve cultural, social, commercial, artistic, financial, and political issues, and from the bottom to the top can determine power relations, careers, sexual norms and deviance, and more.

We live in a period of so-called hyper-consumption which encourages individuals to consume for their own personal pleasure. Fast fashion, trends in sustainable and recyclable fashion, the rise of performance fashion and fashion as performance art denotes a society now defined by movement, fluidity, and flexibility. Performance from ballet to theatre, the catwalk to festivals, is increasingly oriented towards pleasure and satisfaction, a fleeting hedonism which quickly changes focus. The experience is mixed with tensions, conflicts, and even anxiety. The uncertainties and fears of 21st century living are reflected in fashion, performance and all forms of visual representations.

This conference aims to consider ways in which we can re-imagine our practices in relation to others, our history, and the environment with a view to forming a selective publication to engender further collaboration and discussion, whilst also continuing the evolution of the project.

Unlike other conferences or gatherings, our event proposes to step outside the traditional conference setting and offer opportunities for photographers, designers, practitioners, theorists, independent scholars, academics, performers, writers, and others to intermingle, providing platforms for interdisciplinary interactions that are fruitful and conducive to broadening horizons and sparking future projects, collaborations, and connections.

We are excited to accept proposals for presentations, displays, exhibits, round tables, panels, interactive workshops and more. Our main goal is to facilitate dialogue and spark innovative collaborations and discussions at an international level, in a dynamic and interactive setting. Thus, we welcome participants from all relevant disciplines, professions and vocations (NGO personnel, aid workers, researchers, mental and physical health professionals, educators, human rights activists, counsellors, social workers, policy makers, journalists, lawyers, politicians, business owners, military personnel, photographers, designers, editors, journalists, customs workers and members of the border patrol, labour specialists, historians, sociologists, psychologists, economists, anthropologists, ethnographers social media experts, artists and many more).

What to Send
The aim of this interdisciplinary conference and collaborative networking event is to bring people together and encourage creative conversations in the context of a variety of formats: papers, seminars, workshops, storytelling, performances, poster presentations, panels, q and a's, round-tables etc.

300 word proposals, presentations, abstracts and other forms of contribution and participation should be submitted by Friday 8th March 2019. Other forms of participation should be discussed in advance with the Organising Chair.

All submissions will be minimally double reviewed, under anonymous (blind) conditions, by a global panel drawn from members of the Project Development Team and the Advisory Board. In practice our procedures usually entail that by the time a proposal is accepted, it will have been triple and quadruple reviewed.

You will be notified of the panel's decision by Friday 22nd March 2019.

If your submission is accepted for the conference, a full draft of your contribution should be submitted by Friday 12th July 2019.

Abstracts and proposals may be in Word, PDF, RTF or Notepad formats with the following information and in this order:

We live in a period characterised by rises in regionalism, nationalism and authoritarianism; a time of great global uncertainty and anxiety, as well as inequality and iniquity which both reflects and drives political divide, and undermines international systems of cooperation. Clashes of identities, beliefs and ideologies are evident in academia, media and the arts, contributing to a feeling that humanity is spiralling out of control; that our relationships with each other, as well as with the earth and environment, have never been worse.

Yet, as humans, we are not conditioned by fear alone, but instead by a remarkable ingenuity, and a capacity for hope, self-reflection, activism and action. Music is integral to our lives. It gives voice to the feelings and thoughts that cannot be spoken. It has been used on battlefields as well as battles for the heart. It can heal and comfort as well as engender anger and hatred. It has been blamed for mass shootings as well as credited for bringing huge crowds together. It can reinforce cultural mores or break the rules. It fosters connections with the sacred and the profane. It is all around us.

Music speaks volumes where words fail us and can be a conduit for communication between individuals, groups, entire countries, and through time. Musicians, songs and styles of music transcend national boundaries and speak across the generations. Precisely because the meanings and implications of music are not limited to specific professions this project invites inclusive interdisciplinary approaches to making sense of the way music impacts our lives.

We welcome contributions on themes such as, but not limited to music and…

~ Human relationships and emotions (desire/love/lust, breaking up, parenthood, friendship, spirituality, etc.)
~ Non-humans (animals, plants, etc.)
~ Health and wellness (clinical practices, therapeutic approaches, meditation other self-help approaches, psychological/physiological/neurological effects of music)
~ Education (erasure of music from the curriculum, approaches to teaching music/music appreciation, music as learning tool)
~ Law (copyright, intellectual property, censorship, NGOs and unions supporting musicians’ rights)
~ Social welfare (music in social programs, public support for music-oriented activities, philanthropic support for music)
~ Technologies (innovation supporting the making, distributing, sharing, and experiencing of music)
~ Business (music industry trends, popularity/marketability of certain types of music, experiences of musicians, use of music in advertising, etc.)
~ Indigenous cultures (music and rituals, storytelling, etc.)
~ Protest (anti-war songs, songs about political issues, songs about socio-cultural attitudes/practices)
~ War (songs as propaganda, military songs/marches, music for the homefront, songs about war)
~ Identity (nationalism, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, race, class, etc.)
~ Other arts and media (film, tv, video, gaming, art, dance, theatre, poetry, literature, etc.)
~ Genres (trends, composers, performers)

For the 2019 meeting we are particularly interested in exploring music in the context of personal relationships with a view to forming a publication to engender further collaboration and discussion. The relationship between music and human emotion is varied and complex. From pop culture’s love songs to folk and blues, to chansons of unrequited love and songs of historical import, the drama of opera’s arias, through to music as a vehicle for expressing hate and conflict, music narrates the deepest experiences of humanity. Paradoxically, love music can express hate – for example in expressing jealousy – hate music can express not only anger and racial hatred, it can also express love. We warmly welcome contributions which explore the themes of music, love, hate and the emotions across all disciplines, professions and practices.

What to Send
The aim of this interdisciplinary conference and collaborative networking event is to bring people together and encourage creative conversations in the context of a variety of formats: papers, seminars, workshops, storytelling, performances, poster presentations, panels, q&a’s, roundtables etc.
300 word proposals, presentations, abstracts and other forms of contribution and participation should be submitted by Friday 22nd February 2019. Other forms of participation should be discussed in advance with the Organising Chair.

All submissions will be minimally double reviewed, under anonymous (blind) conditions, by a global panel drawn from members of the Project Development Team and the Advisory Board. In practice our procedures usually entail that by the time a proposal is accepted, it will have been triple and quadruple reviewed.

You will be notified of the panel’s decision by Friday 8th March 2019.

If your submission is accepted for the conference, a full draft of your contribution should be submitted by Friday 31st May 2019.

Abstracts and proposals may be in Word, PDF, RTF or Notepad formats with the following information and in this order:
a) author(s), b) affiliation as you would like it to appear in the programme, c) email address, d) title of proposal, e) body of proposal, f) up to 10 keywords.

E-mails should be entitled: Music and Society Submission.

The idea of the child as innocent, as pure, the 'little angel' in need of protection from the harsh realities of life and the corrupting influences of the world around us has come to dominate our thinking, language, values, social policies and educational philosophies in the past few decades. Children are seen as 'little people', 'blank slates', works in progress who are loved, nurtured and guided as they grow to become mature, rational and responsible adults.

Yet we are also aware of the mischievous 'little monsters', the 'little devils' who run exasperated parents ragged. The toddlers who chase pigeons; kick cats; pull the wings off flies and the legs off spiders. Children of whom we become afraid; who abuse other children; who assault each other, strangers, parents, the elderly. Children who 'roam' and 'own' the streets, individually or 'in packs'; who are put 'into care'; who commit crimes; who smoke, drink, and take drugs. Feral children. Children who rape. Children who torture. Children who kill. Children who are 'possessed': demonic children, evil children who do evil things.

This research stream will juggle with three competing approaches to children and evil. The first concerns itself with how (certain) children have been presented as evil and considers the nature of evil children as a social and cultural construct. The second concerns what is meant by 'innocence' – in all contexts – and then particularly the 'innocence of a child'. The third approach considers the question of whether and, if so, in what ways children can be evil. Are children wicked? Are children malicious? What does it mean to be personally, socially, legally and morally responsible? And, if responsibility exists, at what point does one assume responsibility for one's acts? What is it about the special status of 'childhood' that somehow makes it different?

The inaugural launch of this inclusive interdisciplinary conference will begin to examine, explore and undermine issues surrounding the general idea of the child as innocent and explore all aspects of evil children and the relationship between children and evil with a view to forming a publication to engender further collaboration and discussion. It will probe the dichotomies and ambiguities of our understanding and constructs of children, childhood, the passage through childhood to adulthood and the relationship with personal and social values, morals and responsibilities. It will map the ways in which children could or should be held accountable for the things they do and the contexts in which they are subject to influencing factors and conditions. And it will assess the use of 'evil' in relation to children and childhood in historical and contemporary cultures.

Children who become evil adults

We invite people from all disciplines, professions and vocations to come together in dialogue, to provide a space and a level of legitimacy for a subject, or subjects that is traditionally seen as unimaginable, a socially taboo and even associated with pathology, by providing a forum for ideas and arguments that might otherwise not receive adequate attention and discussion. The ultimate goal is in a sense to expose the current topic to the light of day for examination of the intellectual, the emotional and the personal.

Currently, the significant areas of interest include literature, sociology, communications, art, psychology, politics, philosophy, history, anthropology, and other social sciences and humanities. Yet the scope of the conference is not limited to these fields or studies as it does not strike to narrowly define, or define at all, what areas constitute the significant not to eliminate the spirit of interdisciplinary efforts. The meeting is also open to other fields such as biology, biochemistry, political sciences, economics, etc. This kind of interdisciplinary engagement is always enjoyable and fruitful and makes for good networking and collaborative possibilities. Activists, anthropologists, archaeologies, archivists, artists and other creative professionals, civil servants, members of the clergy, clinicians, correctional authorities, historians, journalists, jurists and other legal professionals, military personnel, researchers, writers and others with an interest in the project are encouraged to submit proposals.

What to Send
The aim of this interdisciplinary conference and collaborative networking event is to bring people together and encourage creative conversations in the context of a variety of formats: papers, seminars, workshops, storytelling, performances, poster presentations, panels, q and a's, roundtables etc.

300 word proposals, presentations, abstracts and other forms of contribution and participation should be submitted by Friday 22nd February 2019. Other forms of participation should be discussed in advance with the Organising Chair.

All submissions will be minimally double reviewed, under anonymous (blind) conditions, by a global panel drawn from members of the Project Development Team and the Advisory Board. In practice our procedures usually entail that by the time a proposal is accepted, it will have been triple and quadruple reviewed.

You will be notified of the panel's decision by Friday 8th March 2019.

If your submission is accepted for the conference, a full draft of your contribution should be submitted by Friday 31st May 2019.

Abstracts and proposals may be in Word, PDF, RTF or Notepad formats with the following information and in this order:
a) author(s), b) affiliation as you would like it to appear in the programme, c) email address, d) title of proposal, e) body of proposal, f) up to 10 keywords.

The Representational Art Conference 2019 is the premier international event focused on cutting-edge representational art in the 21st Century.
A conference for studio artists, curators, thinkers and writers.

This year we are especially interested in the relationship between imagination and 21st Century representational art.

Imagination lies at the heart of art. Without it, creativity is impossible. But what is it, how is it employed, and what is its role in representational art? It is a term that everybody celebrates, but it is also (depending on how it is understood) the locus of fundamental disagreements about the nature of the artistic enterprise. This year's TRAC invites artists and thinkers to reflect together on the imagination's role in representational art. We invite submissions on a range of topics related to the imagination, such as:

Violence: An Inclusive Interdisciplinary Conference
15th to 16th July 2019
Verona, Italy

From ancient gladiators battling to the death in front of cheering crowds to the modern-day journalistic maxim that ‘if it bleeds, it leads’, violence has occupied a prominent place in the human imagination. It is common to see animals in the wild fighting to establish dominance and eliminate potential predators. But when humans engage in similar behaviour, it raises a host of questions about the nature and implications of violence. Why has our capacity for reason, compassion and empathy been insufficient to circumvent our primal urge to use physical force to cause injury, death or other forms of harm? Why has violence exerted an irresistible hold on the human psyche throughout history? How have cultural practices and language shaped our understanding of violence in terms of either enabling or discouraging violent behaviour? What, if any, circumstances make violence acceptable? What factors cause people to be violent? What can be done by individuals and communities to prevent violence?

This inclusive interdisciplinary meeting starts from the premise that violence is a complex, multi-faceted concept. It can affect anyone personally or professionally, either directly or indirectly. There is scarcely an occupation or practice that has not in some way contributed to the way violence is understood, experienced or addressed in society. Accordingly, the event seeks to provide a space for inclusive inter-disciplinary dialogues that facilitate a better understanding of violence and strategies for dealing with it in our communities with a view to forming a publication to engender further collaboration and discussion.

Consistent with its interdisciplinary ethos, the event proposes to step outside the traditional conference setting and offer opportunities for artists, photographers, practitioners, theorists, independent scholars, academics, performers, writers, and others to intermingle, providing platforms for interdisciplinary interactions that are fruitful and conducive to broadening horizons and sparking future projects, collaborations, and connections.

The organisers welcome proposals for presentations, displays, exhibits, round tables, panels, interactive workshops and other activities to stimulate engagement and discussion on any aspect of violence; potential topics for exploration include:

Philosophical perspectives
Violence and the law
Violence in religious/sacred traditions
Psychological and medical perspectives on causes and effects of violence
Strategies for stopping/reducing violent behaviour in individuals or groups
Case studies of perpetrators and victims
Treatment of violence in education curriculum development practices
Economics of violence (munitions business, arms deals, etc.)
Promotion of violence through language and cultural cues
Media coverage of violence
Representations of violence in film, television, video, games, art, literature, mythology, poetry, theatre, music and other creative practices
Weapons and technologies that enable/prevent violence
Activism, grassroots, NGOs
Types of violence
Hate crimes
Mass shootings/bombings
Domestic abuse
Child abuse
Institutional violence
State-sanctioned violence (war, genocide, torture, capital punishment, etc.)
Violence in the workplace
Violence in medical/scientific testing
Violence toward non-humans (animals, the environment)
What to Send
The aim of this interdisciplinary conference and collaborative networking event is to bring people together and encourage creative conversations in the context of a variety of formats: papers, seminars, workshops, storytelling, performances, poster presentations, panels, q&a’s, roundtables etc.

300 word proposals, presentations, abstracts and other forms of contribution and participation should be submitted by Friday 22nd February 2019. Other forms of participation should be discussed in advance with the Organising Chair.

All submissions will be minimally double reviewed, under anonymous (blind) conditions, by a global panel drawn from members of the Project Development Team and the Advisory Board. In practice our procedures usually entail that by the time a proposal is accepted, it will have been triple and quadruple reviewed.

You will be notified of the panel’s decision by Friday 8th March 2019.

If your submission is accepted for the conference, a full draft of your contribution should be submitted by Friday 31st May 2019.

Abstracts and proposals may be in Word, PDF, RTF or Notepad formats with the following information and in this order:
a) author(s), b) affiliation as you would like it to appear in the programme, c) email address, d) title of proposal, e) body of proposal, f) up to 10 keywords.

Storytelling and the Body: An Inclusive Interdisciplinary Conference
15th to 16th July 2019

We live in an era where stories about bodies – in/visible bodies, glamorous bodies, engineered bodies, trafficked bodies, dismembered bodies, persecuted bodies – are omnipresent. While bodies are literally made of flesh and blood, our understanding of bodies is constructed through fictional and non-fictional stories that shape perceptions of what constitutes the body, how a body should look, how a body should behave, how a body should experience the world and how bodies should interact with each other. By creating these types of norms, stories also shape perceptions of what constitutes deviant, non-normative and otherwise undesirable bodies. Telling stories about the body is therefore an act loaded with ideological, political, sociological, theological, ontological and aesthetic implications.

At the same time, notions of the body have also had a significant impact on the stories cultures have created and passed down through generations. Suffering bodies are central to the foundational narratives of various religious, cultural and political traditions. Genres have emerged with stories about monstrous bodies, sexual and erotic bodies, bodies at war, modified bodies, bodies coming of age and ageing, bodies being tested by nature, bodies enhanced by (bio)technology, politicised bodies and so forth.

At a time when the socio-political landscape is dominated by the construction of barriers among the population based on race, nationality, gender, sexual orientation and class, it is more important than ever to consider how stories about bodies and perceptions of bodies shaped by stories not only foster division and difference, but also inspire cohesion and belonging. Stories help to create tangible and intangible barriers and borders between human beings. At the same time, stories can also foster awareness and compassion for our common humanity in order to transcend borders and overcome barriers. Some barriers are more personal, and therefore less obvious, because they take the form of a physical or psychological issue that somehow limits an individual’s capacity to participate in their community and/or to achieve their full potential.

Accordingly, the second inclusive interdisciplinary Storytelling event seeks to explore the complex, multi-faceted dynamics of this symbiotic relationship between storytelling and the body with a view to forming a publication to engender further collaboration and discussion.

Particular disciplines, practices and professions have inscribed stories and bodies with particular meanings that, when viewed in isolation, can be skewed and limited. Accordingly, the project aims to break down these boundaries through inter-disciplinary engagement that emphasises inclusivity, dialogue and collegiality.

Clashes of identities, beliefs and ideologies are evident in academia, media and the arts, contributing to a feeling that humanity is spiralling out of control; that our relationships with each other, as well as with the earth and environment, have never been worse.

Yet, as humans, we are not conditioned by fear alone, but instead by a remarkable ingenuity, and a capacity for hope, self-reflection, activism and action. This agency to improve our own lives, and those of others, is the theme of this international conference, inviting us to consider the ways in which we contextualise and process the past, reimagining ourselves, our relationships, and our environments; driving positive change and reclaiming the future as a time we look towards with hope, and even optimism.

ECAH2019 will be held alongside The European Conference on Media, Communication and Film 2019 (EuroMedia2019). Registration for either conference will allow delegates to attend sessions in the other.
