My husband and I are interested in scuba diving when we take a trip to Florida. Although we are both good swimmers and frequently snorkel, we have never tried scuba diving. We have looked in to taking classes and they are very pricey. To get certified in our city, it will cost us $500 and that does not include equipment. I think it is a little pricey especially since we might shell out all the money and not enjoy it as much as snorkeling. I see scuba diving excursions in Florida all the time, do you have to be certified to go on a beginner dive? Can we take a dive excursion that offers not certification but a quick beginner lesson before going out? My husbands ready to sign up for the certification classes but I’d prefer to try it out first. Any advice appreciated

As a kid I use to scuba dive right off La Jolla Cove, bringing back several abalone and after processing them at the house, would chow down while watching the beautiful sunsets.

I have heard from friends still living out there, that the waters are not as clear as I might remember them being since alot of chemical pollutions have been dumped into the coastal areas of the Pacific Ocean from factories and sometimes, if standing high up on a cliff and looking down into the ocean below, you can clearly see the discoloration in the water.

Do people still rent sail planes at Torrey Pines, or has this been outlawed as well?
Roderick F, thanks for the great answer, and I too miss all the big abalone that use to be so available for the taking.
I tried to get some abalone recently from a friend of mine in SD, but he told me that they are dying off due to the chemical pollutants being tossed into the waters, now, the only way you can get abalone is from the farms, inland that raise the abalone and sell them, but I am told that the great taste is no longer there with the farm raised versions. I wonder if there are some big abalone off the Baja coast, off of Mexico, might take a trip down there next month and check it out. Used to go surfing down there a lot when I was a kid, great waves, especially when storms are brewing out at sea. Business will take me to Sunnyvale, CA to speak to the people who operate Yahoo! Inc regarding a complaint I filed against one of their employees for computer hacking, so in between meetings, will have some time to take the trip south.
