Well there were 130 of us there and by all accounts 130 big broad smiles to match (well maybe not quite fully smiling the next morning when the odd hangover or two kicked in), but just to commemorate a really great Grand Ball 2011 night out and to say a huge thanks to our very own Training Manager Sarah for organising it all here’s the piccies …

Carl Spencer “The Explorer” Memoribila Auction

It is always sad when bad things happen to nice people, and in this case an extremely nice person who we all knew personally for many years, but things do on occasion happen and especially when you are at the very pinnacle of your game. Although many of you may never have met him, you may well of heard of Carl Spencer or seen his work on the Discovery or National Geographic channels.

Carl Spencer - Diving Explorer

Carl was responsible for some of the most ground breaking dive exploration work, and filming, to have been conceived and launched from the UK, most famously including the Britannic Expeditions (Titanic Sister Ship) in Greece. A veteran of three expeditions to the Britannic, Carl made his first dive on the wreck eight years ago, uncovering evidence that the ship had been sunk by a mine rather than a torpedo, a question that had long divided historians.Not bad for (in his own words) a Plumber from Cannock.

At 130 metres deep the Britannic is the diving world equivalent of Everest. Of course far beyond the realm of the rest of us regular recreati0nal divers all such extreme expeditions do carry with them a high level of risk, and on his last expedition to the wreck he unfortunately paid the ultimate price. Carls death left behind many friends and colleagues and more importantly his wife and two children. With the distress of loosing their father and husband his family have also had to struggle to balance the books, so to speak, and with this in mind we are pleased to be able to offer a little help in spreading the word of this Memorabilia Auction.

The Carl Spencer Memorabilia Auction will be held on Monday 23rd January at Fellows in Birmingham, and includes many interesting and unique items that Carl had accumulated over his many years of exploring. As a modern day Cousteau he had seen and done many things and been to many places the rest of us will only ever dream of. Now is an opportunity to not only help his family out, but to also own a bit of modern day history.

Red Sea Escape – An Invitation !

Its Brrrrrrrrrloody Freezing out there so why not give us a call and get yourself something hot and sunny to look forward to … How about diving into a superb weeks diving and fun with a great set of scubapursuits buddies in the Red Sea in February, everyone welcome and giggles guaranteed (and that’s a promise from Mark) !

We’ve managed to put together a great little “sneaky break” that’s just perfect for escaping the winter doom and gloom and we’re even flying from Manchester too so no need for a ridiculous drive down to London before we get underway. Its been out there in the stores for a little while and with 22 booked on the trip already looks set to be a legend of a holiday, so come and dive in before this latest batch of tickets are all snapped up …

Its 5th February 2012 to Sharm el Sheikh, staying at the Falcon Naama Star Hotel (descent middle of the road hotel, see below) and diving all the best of the local Red Sea sights with Emperor Divers … Its currently on a B&B basis, cos I’m fairly certain there may be a few outings into town on the cards for the darkness hours !?! so I figured that would do us, although there is an All Inclusive Upgrade available at £91 …

Its set to be a doozer of a trip with our very own gaffer, Mark, and is coming it at just £539 for the Holiday bit and we’ve got the Diving at £149 for five days boat diving, inc cylinder and weights … With only another 6 places on hold w’ere guessing they’re going to go fast, so to help you out we’ve agreed a super low Christmas time deposit at just £130 pp to give you a chance to get it booked an on the kitchen calendar before they’re all gone …

Christmas Opening Hours

Just in case the big lad opts for a cash deposit this year, well after all its a damn site easier to load a load of cash filled envelopes on the sleigh than a crate load of scalectrix and barbies, we didn’t want you to panic … We will of course be here to help you spend it between Christmas and New Year …

Don’t fotget though that if you are particularly bored of granny and grandad over the Christmas period and are just looking for an escape we will be having a little Doing It Scuba Club Christmas Dive on Friday 30th at Stoney Cove at approx 9am … So if you’re looking to burn off the sprouts and sherry come on down and have a little splash around with the rest of the SCUBApursuits buddies …
