Also check out their maps http://www.fallenfruit.org/maps.html .

The Principles of Fallen Fruit:
1. Fruit on public property belongs to all of us.
2. Mapping it is a way to share with everyone, learning neighborhoods by foot, rather than by car.
3. Ask property owners to plant fruit trees for everyone.
4. Functional landscaping: ask cities to plant fruit trees in parks, parking lots, and on streets.
5. Open dialogue within neighborhoods about public spaces.
6. Think about who has fruit and other resources, and who does not.

FALLENFRUIT is a collaboration of Dave Burns, Matias Viegener and Austin Young http://www.fallenfruit.org

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

Fallen Fruit is a collaborative art project which began as a whimsical mapping of our neighborhood public fruit: all the fruit trees we could find that grew on or over public property.
When your neighbor's fruit tree hangs into your yard, that fruit is considered yours. But whose fruit is that on public property? We believe that fruit planted on private property which overhangs public space should be public property and created this project to encourage people both to harvest and plant public fruit. The project is a response to accelerating urbanization and the loss of people's capacity to produce their own foods, as well as issues around grassroots community activism, social welfare and social responsibility.

From the original printed edition, we expanded into a website which posts local maps from the handmade to the high-tech, submitted by our neighbors. We have pictures of fruit and harvesting, including fruit pin-ups. Our ambition is to map the city, the whole state, and then the world. We have also begun to propose public fruit projects. These include further mapping, a campaign to encourage property owners to plant fruit, petitions to the city to plant streets and parking lots, and a proposal for a public fruit park. We think of Fallen Fruit as much as community activism as an art project. Our neighborhood is full of homeless people and uneaten fruit: why can't the two be connected? We're not interested in random theft. Our intention is to promote sharing and community-based thinking.

We live in a world controlled by multinational corporations, in which we don't know our neighbors, with a media that manufactures social realities and ignores poverty and oppression. Our food arrives processed and pre-wrapped, and few of us know where it comes from. Our cities are full of wasted spaces and neglected resources. Fallen Fruit proposes that we be able to make more food with little effort and find ways to map it and networks for sharing it. The injunction to share food is as old as the Bible, which tells us that we should not harvest all our food for ourselves; the fallen fruit should always be left for those who have nothing.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[2] DIY (do it yourself) WWOOF (willing workers on organic farms [and other good places]) SD County:

While I'm emailing everyone,
I'm looking for local wwoof opportunities.
If I can camp or sleep on the floor at or near where I can work (unpaid) ~4/hrs day, please let me know. I'm happy to do kitchen, garden, computer and many other kinds of work.

My main goals are:
   * to work with others and
   * to visit and learn from different people and places in the county.

For more information, please visit:
http://fo-rest.blogspot.com/2009/01/diy-wwoof-in-sd-county-will-work-for.html

Peace & a smile,
Colin

local food map + some new tricks

I started an sdfnl tweme: http://twemes.com/sdfnl

Here's the first tweets:

                   forestdweller:
                 #sdfnl #sdtjdph Jed Sundwall started a gmap of local food sources: http://is.gd/cWG . for bookmarking--see sdfoodnotlawns.com 's bookmarks.

A major issue though is handling and reducing information overload and increasing info quality and relevance (--hence the "weekly share" newsletter experiment.)

And enjoying more peace while still benefiting from the new tech.

From my experimentation, I would recommend that _everyone_ learn to use a feed reader and that every non-profit make available at least two feeds: one an ical / google calendar feed of events and another of news/updates. Larger orgs make available a wider range of feeds: links, videos, photos, blogs by different authors and topics.

The most wonderful thing about my shunting of most mass communications to my reader page is that I hardly get any email, and if I get email it was sent directly to me.

If I want to get my mass updates--I go to my reader.

If I want to see events of orgs I'm interested in, I go to my calendar.

Email is far less of a distraction this way.

Incidentally-- Y! groups does offer a feed of sdeln-forum.

My next new-tech experiment is to go live in Los Padres National Forest with a Solio charger and blackberry or something like that and blog from the forest mountaintops (and be contactable so people can come visit).

Another cool demo of the Web 2.0 tech is a use of myvidster.com and pixrat.com to compile video and photos from multiple sharing sites into one feed and then displaying the items in a sildeshow-- carfrees.blogspot.com has examples of both of these (I use google reader to aggregate and format the feeds for display in the slideshow ).

Here is a bit of the dialectic that plays out in experimenting with the new tech: providing useful info that people can act on vs. distracting us/others from a focus on fundamental issues and fundamental changes.

With the Internet + web 2.0 (custom updates from multiple sources), there is an expansion of awareness, self, identity (or something) occurring that I don't want to be without. The tech is now ubiquitous & portable enough that I can (I think) live in a wilderness area and still benefit from this connection.

Maybe I'll be able to write more thoughtfully about this from the forest.

Peace,
Colin
ps: You all might be interested in 'google for non-profits' and 'the official google.org blog'

2008/4/14, Larry Hogue <lhogue1@san.rr.com>:

Hello all,

Does anyone on this list use any of the social bookmarking or other networking services out there to promote your issues or organization? If so, which ones, and with how much success?

I've been dabbling in this area simultaneously with starting a blog for the Desert Protective Council, but find that not a lot of enviros I interact with use these services.

Specifically, I've started posting links to anti-Sunrise Powerlink sites and videos on Hugg.com (it's Digg for greens, but that assumes you know what Digg is!). Not many votes (or Huggs) so far. I find that Hugg uers cover mostly cleantech, renewable energy, and anti-global warming issues, which perhaps reflects the younger demographic of global warming activists, compared to public lands and other mainline environmental issues activists.

I also have started using twitter.com. It's mainly used by techies and bloggers, but in theory it could be used by a group of activists to keep in touch with each other, and keep each other apprised of what the others are doing. It can also be used to alert "followers" (readers) when a blog or website has been updated.

Basically, it's a "micro-blogging" site, where messages are limited to 140 characters. It works very well to direct readers to a web page or blog post that has more information. You can both post and receive messages from your cell phone.

For instance, I have a Twitter username of DesertBlog that I use to announce blog posts: http://twitter.com/DesertBlog. These short posts go to the followers of the twitter username "DesertBlog" (all 2 of them right now!). Other users have 100s or 1000s of people following them, so it's an easy way for them to spread information widely.

Twitter could also be used to organize large groups of people on the fly. For instance, during last week's Olympic torch relay demonstrations in San Francisco, if all the demonstrators had been following a twitter username of "FreeTibet," then "FreeTibet" could have sent a text message to all of them with a message like "the torch is now at X Street and Y Ave. Head to X ST. and Z Ave."

While it may seem that something like Twitter could end up bringing you too much communication with lots of individual messages, the advantage is that the messages are all short (unlike this e-mail and most environmental issues alerts). Readers can surf through the messages quickly and choose which ones they want to explore further.

I'd love to hear feedback from this list about whether these or other new media tools could be useful both for leaders communicating with each other, and for organizations to communicate with their members or other interested folks.

Filmmaker Taggart Siegel paints a fascinating portrait of a man who refused to yield. By transforming his farm into an experimental haven in the late 1960s, John Peterson attracted hundreds of artists, hippies and other political radicals. But when the agriculture crisis of the late 1980s led to the farm's eventual collapse -- and his neighbors publicly branded him a devil worshipper -- most locals thought he'd call it quits. They were wrong.

We will also finish planning for Peace Rally on March 15 and Stop Robertson's campaign.

Bus Riders Union Rally and Film, March 20th 6:30pm at the Joyce Beers Center

[from ASD. We will also be showing "The Bus Riders Union" documentary and discussing the options in San Diego to oppose the city's increase of bus riding fares. Members of the Los Angeles Bus Riders' Union will be speaking at the Rally. Donation of $10 is suggested to help pay for the film and attorney fees for a possible legal suit against the elimination of transfers.

Film beings at 6:30pm at the Joyce Beers Center.

"The Bus Riders Union" is a feature length documentary by Academy Award winning cinematographer Haskell Wexler, tracing three years in the life of one of the nation's most dynamic social movements.

Haskell Wexler is considered one of the finest cinematographers in the world, with a prolific body of work including "Who's Afraid of Virgina Woolf," "Medium Cool," "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," "Bound for Glory," "American Graffiti," and "Matewan." He has been nominated five times for academy awards, winning two Oscars for Best Cinematography.

The film traces three years in the life of Los Angeles' Bus Riders Union as it forges a powerful multiracial movement to fight transit racism, clean up L.A.'s lethal auto pollution and win billion-dollar victories for real mass transit for the masses.

"Bus Riders Union" is a rare mix of fine film making, good politics, and a complex portrayal of a multiracial grassroots movement that is taking on some of the most powerful forces in Los Angeles - and winning.

Suzanne Baustad, director of Mayworks, Vancouver, Canada: "I was so inspired by "Bus Riders Union" that I invited seven other activists and organizers over for a viewing. I have done anti-poverty work in the city for the past 5 years and recognized immediately just how important and unique (especially in North America) the BRU and its model of organizing is."

Robert Scheer, Los Angeles Times, Feb. 13, 2000: "Wexler, who may be the best cinematographer in the world, captures the joy of struggle on the part of a polyglot group ...all of whom never lost their humanity in the struggle."

A coalition of groups including the San Diego Renters Union, San Diego Copwatch, the San Diego Peace and Freedom Party, the Green Party of San Diego County, and the San Diego Coalition for Clean and Fair Government will be riding the buses and trolleys from March 7th to March 19th passing out flyers to transit riders. We want this to be a grass-roots organization; so that transit riders can fight their exploitation.

The San Diego Coalition for Clean and Fair Government is calling for free public transportation, treating public transit as a community resource, like libraries and parks. They are calling for a progressive fee (based on blue-book valuation) on every (non-commercial) vehicle registered in the City of San Diego to underwrite the costs of public transportation.

Fwd: City of Vancouver - Food Policy e-bulletin - February 29, 2008

Take a look at Vancouver to get some ideas of things that could be happening here. Different from us, so far, they have paid city staff --the social planning department-- to compile this e-bulletin. Canada has a tradition of governments doing what non-profits have been doing here. I think there was a conference a while back for Canadian gov't to learn from the strategies of US non-profits. Even so, I think progressive US cities have employees working in social-planning roles, such as the City of Austin's Sustainable Communities Initiative and green building program.
peace, Colin

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: Food Policy <food.policy at vancouver.ca>
Date: 29-feb-2008 15:12
Subject: City of Vancouver - Food Policy e-bulletin - February 29, 2008
To: Food Policy <food.policy at vancouver.ca>

City of Vancouver – Food Policy e-bulletin
February 29, 2008

Index of Postings: For complete Bulletin visit:
http://www.vancouver.ca/commsvcs/socialplanning/initiatives/foodpolicy/newsletter/index.htm

We're sending this edition of the bulletin out a few days earlier than intended as we just received some breaking news about a public consultation opportunity around the UBC Farm. discussion list.]

I think we somehow need to expand beyond the carfree focus to address the impacts of air travel on public space.

Around the world, in urban environments in particular, but in all environments, air travel is an area of transportation INjustice / poor design that the wealthy/powerful seem to be always trying to ram down the public throat.

There is excessive helicopter use. There is the continual push to expand airports. And there is the noise, air pollution, and destruction of space associated with these.
If we could have some sort of global response to / resource center for these injustices/design failures--that would be great. Here are some local examples of the issue:

Google News on Lindbergh airport (San Diego)

Google News on Heathrow airport (London)

Monbiot on Heathrow

Kaletsky on Heathrow

I'm not sure how we frame this. It would be good to have some idea of what the nature of air travel would be and what impacts we would be willing to accept in the world we are working for--so we can channel things that way.

Here's a page I started to help address this for Southern California, SoCal Peace. This year, we decided to do something a little different, and are hosting an event focused specifically on food policy. In collaboration with the San Diego Hunger Coalition, San Diego Community Farms and Gardens, SD Roots Sustainable Food Project and Tierra Miguel Foundation, we've invited the California Food and Justice Coalition (CFJC) to host a work session to help us "hammer out a healthier food system".

Specifcally, CFJC will be soliciting input for their statewide advocacy efforts--amplyifying our needs through the strong network they've built throughout California! Just type in Balboa Park Club into google maps to see where it is.

Hope to see you there!

Learn more here:
http://newurbanism.meetup.com/101/calendar/7384666/

San Diego IRC hiring Transportation Coordinator

[Here is an HTML Version of the job posting. I've been talking about having a local focus rather than being an example of focusing locally. I'm working on changing this.]

Walter, thank you very much for organizing the meeting last night!

Is this the right place to post that you mentioned last night?

This is the guiding orientation I've come up with: "nourishing our shared space, caring for the commons".

If people ask me what is good or progressive, I refer to that.

My concern is to help everyone stay local and focus on the local--meaning their own neighborhoods. A broader regional focus is important too.

While others fight, and that may be necessary, I have no motivation to fight--I'll walk away if I can, or get run over if not.

If everyone walked away, from paying rent, from paying taxes, from paying insurance, from using cars, etc--

and into a world where they stay in their neighborhood, grow the plants they need for energy and shelter, collect rainwater, care for their gardens--, care for their local friends. . .

That is what I work for.

The traveling and global organizing others do is important too.

The guiding vision I work under is primarily that of permaculture combined with what I've learned from Thich Nhat Hanh. Here is a quote of TNH: "When we ride on a horse which is out of control, I think our deepest wish is to stop. How can we stop? We have to resist the speed, the losing of ourselves, and therefore we must organize a resistance. Spending two hours on a cup of tea during a tea meditation is an act of resistance, nonviolent resistance. We can do it because we have a Sanghakaya [community of practitioners]. We can do it together, we can resist a way of life that makes us lose ourselves."

I work for a day when people are more concerned than they are now with what occurs in their gardens and in their neighborhoods. Global focus and global care can grow from there.

Working on this comment--thinking partly to ask you to link to the SDTJDPH blog--inspired me to attempt to make a list of Organizations in the San Diego / Tijuana region with visions that emphasize both collaboration and caring for the commons.

Peace,
Colin

Organizations in the San Diego / Tijuana region with visions that emphasize both collaboration and caring for the commons

What are the commons?
SD Food Not Lawns

SD City Repair

SD Primitive Skills

SD/TJ Design, Plant, Harvest blogs, calendars, maps, videos, photos, & links

The other main things I have to share about are Permaculture and Thich Nhat Hanh.

------

For SD Food Not Lawns, to begin to try to understand what is happening there, you'll want to take a look at the email list archives, and perhaps sign up. The best way, though, is to attend the events listed at foodcalendar.org.

The email list sign up buttons on the main page of sdfoodnotlawns.com are currently not working, but Mariah may fix those soon.

I can't say more about it than that--it has been a wonderful group to know about, and there are many people organizing different activities there.

My emphasis, however, has been on organizing at the neighborhood level rather than at the regional/city level (many in SDFNL focus on the whole region), but so far I've mostly just been talking--and have yet to really organize in my neighborhood.

--------------------------

My main focus is helping people (myself first!) stay where they are in their neighborhoods for their day-to-day life, and, ideally, obtain almost all of what they need for a wonderful life without needing to leave their neighborhoods.

This and the corresponding cartoon are the main ideas I want to leave you with.
--------------------------

If you're super-excited about the primitive skills gathering, and would like to help organize it, let me know--we're camping out this weekend in Rainbow, near Fallbrook to do just that.

Permaculture and centering one's self in stillness and peace (partly to sense the next step, partly to enjoy peace) are what I see connecting these projects I've mentioned.

If you have specific questions--such as items we talked about last night--please email me back about them again so we can continue the conversation.

I won't send you any more emails unless you email me or sign yourself up at the sites I link to here to receive future updates. I'm sorry if this ends up in your spam folder!

I'm also inviting you all to post at the SDTJPDH blog! you should get another email about that.

Peace,
Colin
--
Contribute to the blogs, links, calendars, photos, videos & maps at
SD/TJ Design, Plant, Harvest:
nourishing our shared space, caring for the commons.

Bike Prom and Megacoalition Meeting on Sun., 2/17 @6pm + Backyard farming, TJ trips + pruning

Bike Prom
