Jesse Says "I was watching TV one sleepless night and stumbled upon an infomercial for some beauty product. The commercial showed before and after portraits, that to my eye, looked like the same photo just photoshopped. I laughed to myself. Then I made this video."

I think the final product is pretty funny and smart.

One Self-Portrait a Day Since 1999

Toronto-based photographer Jeff Harris started a photo-a-day project back in 1999 in an effort to document his life through self-portraits. Since then, he has captured 4,748 beautiful photographs that show everything from reckless stunts to a fierce battle with cancer (warning: there’s a graphic image). Harris states,

I didn’t want 365 images of me sitting on the couch each day. There could have been that tendency, especially during the cold dark winter months to stay inside all the time, but this project inspired me to get out there and seek out interesting things.
[...] I see no reason to not make a self-portrait each day. I’m always around and always free. It’s kind of like going to the gym—it flexes your muscles and keeps you in shape. [#]

Harris is entering the 14th year of his project this year, and although his body is far from being the same as when he started this endeavor, his great photographic vision is still evident in each of his images.

Though it's hard — some might even say sacrilegious — to imagine a second movie without Wiig, Universal claims it's still open to the possibility ofBridesmaids 2: "We are talking to filmmakers now about concepts," a rep says, "and if the right one emerges, we'll move forward." Sources say Melissa McCarthy would be a must-have for the movie, meaning it could be packaged as a spinoff, rather than a sequel. Does that go down a little smoother? Follow-up question: Are Mumolo and Wiig working on a screenplay about a sketch comedian who falls for a hot drummer with an exotic name?

Vogue Market Editor Jessica Sailer isn’t one to buy on impulse. She’s the kind of shopper who considers each investment with extra special care. “My rule has always been to put the thing I love on hold at the store, and then I have at least until the end of the day to figure out just how much I want it,” she says. “If I’m still thinking about a dress hours later, then I know it was meant to be.” It’s partly why the frenzy of an online auction has never appealed to Sailer. According to her, it’s too easy to get sucked in: How do you gauge your need for something new without being consumed by the thrill of the chase?

Indeed, with the sheer volume of product on sites like eBay, from discounted deadstock to vintage collectibles to the counterfeit red herrings, the experience has become increasingly overwhelming in more ways than one. But when it comes to tracking down the looks of seasons past—that handbag, dress, or pair of shoes that got away the first time around—it can be invaluable. For Sailer, that must-have piece was a pair of Balenciaga by Nicolas Ghesquière wedges, shoes that had eluded her four years earlier. The opening bid was steep—more than twice the original retail price—even though they’d clearly been worn (unlike designer handbags, shoes plummet in value once they step onto the sidewalk). In an unorthodox and not necessarily suggested eBay maneuver, she took matters in to her own hands and contacted the seller to negotiate a more reasonable Buy It Now price. “I understand what it means to have an emotional attachment to something,” she says. “But I also know what those shoes were really worth.”

Stating her case and budget in no uncertain terms, she successfully managed to cut the asking price of the shoes by more than half to win her prize. To save on an astronomical international shipping fee, she cleverly had the shoes sent to a friend local to the seller in London, who would be crossing the pond a few weeks later and paid $10 as opposed to the hundreds of dollars that an expedited package coming from overseas can cost. Despite her eBay success, Sailer still prefers a traditional brick-and-mortar store over the virtual experience and would never rely only on eBay when it comes to renewing her look each season. For those key pieces that she’s been missing, however, the online auction marketplace has become a very important tool. “It’s one thing to scoop up a piece a day or so after leaving the store,” says Sailer, who now has her eye on a Prada dress from several seasons ago. “But it’s particularly satisfying to get the thing you’ve been wanting for years.”

With Sailer’s story in mind, here are five tips to shop eBay like an editor:

1. Be specific: To save time scrolling through pages of fashion, keep a wish list of must-have items and store it on your cell phone or computer. If you wouldn’t compromise on the size, color, or fabric in the store, don’t make the same mistake online.

2. Do your research: Knowing your fashion history will help with shopping for major fashion labels; consider buying something from an earlier season. Tomas Maier–era Bottega Veneta bags aren’t cheap, but one from before his tenure at the house may have the same signature intrecciato leather weave but should be more reasonably priced.

3. Jump on a trend early: As soon as a collection is posted on sites like Vogue.com, get a head start on the trends by looking at vintage versions of what’s feeling new. Chandelier earrings are set to be big for spring (Dolce has good ones) and are a very easy eBay get.

4. Ask for more photos: Not every seller knows the power of taking the perfect product shot, so don’t be deterred by a poor set of images. Contact the seller for more options if you feel that you’ve found what could be a diamond in the rough.

5. Use your network: Keep international shipping costs to a minimum and have your purchase sent to a friend local to the seller

Movies: Once Upon a Time in Anatolia

The humorist James Thurber, in his book Lanterns & Lances, once pointed to “two kinds of light, the glow that illumines and the glare that obscures.” It’s hard not to think of that distinction when watching Once Upon a Time in Anatolia, a wry Turkish feature by Nuri Bilge Ceylan, who won the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Director in 2008 for Three Monkeys. Once Upon a Time is all about light: The movie follows three police vehicles, headlights blazing, through the Anatolian Steppe one night during a search for a murdered man—a hunt that should be simple, but due to unreliable information, bureaucratic messiness, and general bumbling, becomes a Sisyphean endeavor. The officers’ main suspect (Firat Tanis) is evasive and hallucinatory. The rules of rural jurisdiction are ridiculously arcane. Tracing a fairy-tale-like path across this dusky landscape, Ceylan tells a strange, enchanted story about the glare of First World order and the truths that emerge in the dimmer light of provincial mores.

The epic hunt—carried out by a local prosecutor (Taner Birsel), his police chief (Yılmaz Erdoğan), and a lonely medical examiner (Muhammet Uzuner,whose understated performance gives the film its emotional focus)—unravels under quite un-epic circumstances. The men distract themselves with a long talk about the ontological properties of buffalo yogurt; the prosecutor relieves himself constantly due to a swollen prostate. When the search goes cold, the investigators spend the night in a small village whose mayor (Ercan Kesal) entertains them with his big-town dreams. (His great ambition, he explains, is to build a high-tech morgue.)

Throughout the film, the prize dangling before these officials is E.U. membership; it’s with an eye to Western standards that they go through their charade of forensic rigor (the body, when it’s found, gets stuffed in the trunk of a police car) and judicial process. Still, something is lost in the relentless pursuit of modernity: When the lights go out at the village mayor’s home, his lovely daughter (Cansu Demirci) appears, hauntingly, lit by just an oil lamp—and although the travelers strike a pose of pity for this cloistered beauty, it’s clear they’re captivated by the romance of the mystic, bygone Turkey that she represents.

Ceylan has an eye for moments like this, when the imagination slows and hesitates between opposing aspirations, and his touch is nuanced enough to let them take shape on-screen. Though Once Upon a Time in Anatolia may strike American viewers as meandering—it runs two and a half hours, with changes of setting few and far between—its visual palate is so rich, and its emotional detailing so fine, that with a few exceptions the long takes seem lush and novel. The result is both a black farce and a treatise on Turkey’s uncertain future, a tribute to a struggling nation searching for its own illuminating glow.

Must Watch: Meryl Streep - 2011 Kennedy Center Honors

Meryl Streep is one of the most acclaimed actresses in Hollywood history. That's why it's no surprise she was chosen for the 2011 Kennedy Center Honors. Several of her friends and former co-stars attended this year's ceremony, which included a stunning tribute to the acting legend.

The 34th Annual Kennedy Center Honors brought out the big guns for Meryl Streep. Tuesday night, CBS aired the ceremony, which featured appearances by Robert De Niro, Kevin Kline, Mike Nichols and Anne Hathaway.

De Niro, who co-starred with Streep in 1978's The Deer Hunter, took the stage after watching an impressive montage that highlighted her career.

"As an actor looking at those moments of Meryl's life, my first thought is 'I was amazing in The Deer Hunter,'" joked De Niro. "I was nominated for an Academy Award for The Deer Hunter, and so was Meryl. That was her first. She's up to 16 now."

Over the course of her career, Steep has given life to some of film's most iconic characters. The aforementioned Linda in The Deer Hunter, Joanna Kramer in Kramer vs. Kramer, Sophie from Sophie's Choice, Helen Archer in Ironweed and those are just from the '70s and '80s!

During the Kennedy Center tribute, Streep heard kind words from director Mike Nichols, whom she's worked with on four films and a play. Frequent co-star Stanley Tucci also took the stage and declared, "There is one thing I want with me in every scene and that is Meryl Streep."

Kevin Kline (Sophie's Choice), Tucci, and his The Devil Wears Prada co-stars Emily Blunt and Anne Hathaway completed the presentation with a rendition of "She's Me Pal," a take on Streep's performance of "He's Me Pal" from Ironweed.

British Fashion Folk Included on Queen’s 2012 New Year Honors List

Lulu Kennedy, the founder of London Fashion Week'sFashion East initiative, received an MBE (Member of the British Empire) title. Her work on the catwalk showcase — which is credited with crucial early support for rising British designers includingGareth Pugh, Holly Fulton, and Marios Schwab — has earned her the title of London's "fashion fairy godmother."

One level up on the awards spectrum, OBEs (Order of the British Empire) went to Barbara Hulanicki, founding designer behind the iconic sixties label Biba, shoe designer Emma Hope, and the British Fashion Council's honorary treasurer Christopher Inman. Let the stressing out over what to wear to Buckingham Palace to collect their special medals begin.

'Tis the season for banal lists and rankings, but today brings one that we actually look forward to each year: Which celebrities sold the most fashion magazines in 2011, and who sold the least? The bestsellers aren't terribly groundbreaking: Jennifer Aniston, Heidi Klum, and Sarah Jessica Parker all did exceedingly well on newsstands. SJP's Elle, Vogue, and Marie Claire covers were the second or third best-sellers for each publication; meanwhile, Heidi Klum's Lucky and Glamour covers were both magazines' second best performers, and Aniston gave Marie Claire its best-selling issue in July and turned out good numbers for her November Elle. Which is rather disappointing, really — last year's best-sellers (Lady Gaga, Lady Gaga, and more Lady Gaga) marked a refreshing departure from the pretty, blonde, America's sweetheart types whose Crest-bleached grins have sparkled up at us from newsstands so predictably.

Not that Gaga doesn't still sell, of course, but her covers this year garnered mixed results. Her March Vogue and May Harper's Bazaar covers were the second and third best-selling issues for each magazine, respectively. However, it appears that her toned-down look doesn't have the same effect: Her October Harper's Bazaar cover, which showed her with minimal makeup and no clothes, was one of the publication's worst performers of 2011 (its lack of appeal also may have had something to do with burgeoning Gaga fatigue).

If it's any consolation, the year's worst-sellers were of the cute, blonde variety as well: Reese Witherspoon's covers did consistently poorly, marking below-average sales for Vogue, Marie Claire, and Glamour. Michelle Williams didn't do so well for Vogue or Marie Claire, either. Other newsstand downers were Fergie and Brooklyn Decker (WWD issues this withering advice: "Moral of this story, Brooklyn: Stick with Sports Illustrated").

But wait, who are we missing? Who was on the rest of the magazine covers this year, sometimes with her sisters, often showing cleavage, and once even wearing sheet music? That, of course, would be the ubiquitous Kim Kardashian, who brought in mixed sales across the board. Her covers of August's Cosmopolitan and February's Glamour were both top-sellers, while her issues of Harper's Bazaar, Self, and Lucky were just average. WWD reports that sales of her December Marie Claire cover and January 2012 Glamour aren't looking too good so far, although specific results haven't been announced yet. So perhaps — just perhaps — Kim will be the Blake Lively of 2012: taking a bit of a break, and none too soon.

BestVendor.com recently released The Designer’s Toolkit, an infographic showing the results of a survey with 180 design professionals about the software they use to perform their magic.

What are the most popular tools and apps used by designers? We were curious, so we pulled together data based on 180 design and creative professionals who use BestVendor. Below is an infographic showing results across a range of product categories, from invoicing to wireframing. We also included a few design tools considered hidden gems and rising stars among this audience. One observation: Designers’ powerhouse tools like the Adobe Suite remain on the desktop, but more than half of their favorite apps are in the cloud.

Although 180 designers isn’t enough to be quantitative, statistically accurate results, I really like the overall design layout and the stacked bar style with the most used software on top of each chart. Easy to read and compare between categories. However, I don’t understand the color choices (shouldn’t they be related to each software brand color?), and I think it would have looked better with the application icons in the chart.
