Phenomenal Retina Display

The Retina Display is phenomenal and gorgeous. every picture is displayed with the most accurate colors as shot. This makes editing look more natural and outstanding. I have been using these M1 Macbook Air for more than a month and have edited around 500 pictures in Lightroom like a breeze.

Lasting Battery

For the normal daily Lightroom edits, I was able to work for 8 hours with around 50% brightness in a bright day-lit room. The battery life is outstanding because of the M1 chip that uses RISC and it consumes very less power.

For a deep level of concentration, noise is the primary enemy. This M1 MacBook Air makes ZERO noise because it has NO Fan, it has passive cooling which makes it completely silent. M1 MacBook Air on Video Editing

I tried to install DaVinci resolve and Blackmagic has released ver.17, it works like butter smooth. Blackmagic has released the DaVinci Resolve for M1 macs. I tried editing a 4K footage in M1 MacBook Air, its unbelievable that the M1 chip handles it very smoothly.

I edited a 5 min video with 15 tracks of video and 12 tracks of audio, the m1 MacBook Air handled it very smoothly and there were no skip frames.

Video exporting was also great, it did not lack anywhere. I exported a 4K Video and it took 3 min to export a 6 min 4K video with multiple layers of Colour grade, Noise reduction, and Effects.

Limitation

It does not throttle but brings down the clock speed of the processor when the temperature reaches 95-degree celsius, of course, what do you expect a fanless machine to do? Apple has done this to prevent the processor from toasting, but the expected performance is delivered while maintaining the CPU temperature below 100 degrees celsius. This is brilliant Apple.

1. The keyboard backlight is not working unless you login, so you cannot see the keys in the dark before login.
2. Only 2 Thunderbolt 3 ports are available, A USB 3.1 / HDMI / SD Card slot could be more helpful.

What frame rate to use when shooting videos

It depends on the shoot and the purpose of the shoot I can share my experience as I do video portfolios.

Depending on sound

If you're going to use a piece of background music then you don't need to worry about the framerate you can shoot in 24 frames for a cinematic cinematic look you can shoot in 60 frames and slow it down to 24 frames or 30 frames depending on the shot and depending on the way you wanted to look.

If there is a human wise in the world in the picture I would prefer to shoot in 24 frames per second as that is the standard and it gives you the Cinematic look after you colour grade it.

I prefer to shoot in 16 frames per second and 4K in 24 frames, so most of the shots where I require them to slow down I shoot them in 60 frames per second.

Jobs where I need magnification or where I need zoom I need zoom feature to be applied in the post-production I used to shoot them in 24 frames in 4k.

The great advantage of shooting in 4K is that 4K is that you can do your picture as it is 4 times than your usual 1080p footage so even in the 300% do you still get a clear crisp and sharp picture if you have shot in 4k.

24 FPS

24 Frames per second gives you a cinematic look for your footage. When shot with correct exposure and with a proper colour grading you can get 80% of the Cinematic look even with any low budget DSLR camera that can shoot video. This is the standard of feature films worldwide from the ages of the films. It will always have that cinematic touch when 24 frames are shown in 1 second.

Feature films, short films, commercials and educational videos use 24 FPS as standard.

The advantage is it takes lesser memory than other greater framerates.

30 FPS

Weddings intro, commercials and dreamy look videos use 30 FPS. Shot in 30 FPS and played in 24 FPS this gives a very dreamy and normal speed looking video.

60 FPS

Most of the mid-range DSLR has this feature to capture high-speed shots for slow-motion playback. In mid-range cameras, the manufacturers can't afford to give 120 FPS so they provide 60 FPS, its a kind of selling point for the mid-range DSLR cameras.

It does not takes only half the space of 120FPS and stays a bit lighter on the editing table.

When writing more than 60 FPS the storage media has to have the capacity to store a high level of data else there will be drop frames. To store this abundant data the memory card readers and writers should have the capability to read and write at high bit rates per second. Here comes the advantage of UHS-2 cards and compatible cameras. This will eventually increase the cost of the cameras.

120 FPS

Shooting at 120 FPS is really exciting when you see the output in 24 frames after the shooting.

Any action shot is really thrilling if you can shoot that in 120 FPS

This gives you the freedom in the post-production to play either in 30 frames per second or 60 frames per second or 90 FPS as you decide and depending on the content or the way you want it to be played.

Remember most of the cameras do not record audio you in 120 frames per second so you need to add the audio in all the 120 FPS footage you shoot and please remember to speed the audio according to the playing speed of the the the footage.

There are new professional cameras from Sony, Panasonic and Canon which can shoot 240 frames per second, of course, it comes with an additional cost and memory consumption and more computing power in the post-production or editing table.

There are two disadvantages if you shoot in 4k

1. it takes more memory or space in the memory card when you shoot in 4K so you need 4K so you need need to plan accordingly for an extra memory card

2. In the post-production or in the Edit table do you need a powerful computer to edit the 4K footage you need a processor with at least 8 cores and 16 threads, I would recommend at least using Ryzen 7 2700.

I would advise you to have a shooting plan with the proper frames per second second second for every shot.

Keeping focus while shooting videos with DSLR

How to keep everything in focus on DSLR video, keeping the subject in focus is an ultimate challenge while shooting videos, this becomes easy in photography as the subject is mostly in a constant distance. This completely changes when it comes to video shooting, it's a different game. Many have asked me do you use manual focus for video?

DSLR video focus tracking can be achieved either m manual focus or by autofocus. A new video camera focus technique has come into the market called the 'Remote focus puller', a focus puller helps you by focusing your camera through a wireless controller. Best focus mode for video is neither manual focus nor autofocus, both works in different situations and also based on the abilities of your camera.

Many have asked me how to keep the focus on a moving subject in focus, I have tried a few methods and those have worked successfully for me.

I have shared my experience and all methods I follow when I do a video shoot.

1.Wide angel Lens

Try to use the wide-angle lens as much as possible, always shoot with a more closed aperture. I use 5.6 to F8 in moderately lit areas. Higher the aperture [higher number], more the focus.

2. Constant Distance

For moving subjects always keep a constant distance between the camera and the subject, of course, you have a little freedom based on the aperture, use higher aperture more range of focus will help you keep the subject in focus.

3. Autofocus

Autofocus is available in many cameras nowadays but autofocus works properly only when you have one subject in the field-of-view, one human in the frame if you have more than one person in the frame, it is better to use manual focus else the camera decides on which face focusing rather than the planned face[subject] to focus

4. Remote Focus Puller

Having a Focus puller is a good idea if you have the budget. A focus puller will help to do the focusing from a remote monitor or a tablet, you can have the Focus puller remotely operating the focus so the camera can move freely and also capture the subject in their quiet Focus. We get remote focus puller kit available like the Zhiyun focussing kit, comes as an addition to their awesome gimbals.

5. Fixing a Meeting point for Focus

When capturing a subject moving in the opposite direction, mark a point on the floor, where the subject has to come in focus and then work backwards so that when the camera is moving in the opposite direction to the subject there is a particular marked point where the subject comes into focus and then moves away, remember the camera should be shooting in the manual focus mode.

This kind of shot is commonly used in dance videos come on music videos and commercials.

In the below videos, I have used all these techniques I have shared with you, there are 3 more techniques following below...

6. Back-up plan

Take the same shot with manual focus and with autofocus if required, so if either of it goes wrong the other could help you as a backup

7. Multiple takes

To cover up the risk in the focus, I always advise taking multiple shots or repeated shots so that if one goes away at least you have a few to back you up

8. Shoot the rehearsal

If you can shoot the rehearsal that is really good as it will be a backup for you and you could also check the camera angle, camera focus the lighting everything on the monitor and adjust before the real shot.

The above video is completely shot with manual focus in a DSLR camera, I have managed to keep everything in focus. Keep practising and you will understand the techniques better.

Should I buy a Sony A7C?

Is an upgrade to Sony A7C worth the money I pay? Is a good question that came to me when I saw this camera when it was released.

What does Youtube say about Sony A7C?

I went down looking on all the reviews and videos on youtube, most of them are talking on the positive side of this camera and only very few have spoken the real challenges this camera could give the photographer of the videographer.

I thought all these bloggers and YouTube reviewers who took mostly the positive on the products are trying to sell the products to their viewers for a small commission and this is like playing with the money of the customer or the YouTube followers who are following them with a lot of confidence on their reviews. I don't want to do that, I want to share my real opinion on this camera and of course, a few reviews were real reviews, from a couple of Youtube channels as well.

I want my readers to know the real fact that will come as a shock when you start shooting with the new Sony a7c, I'm not here to sell this camera to you, my readers, I'm here to tell talk openly on this camera.

Price?

$1800 USD [Body only] and $2100 USD with the kit-lens, for this camera, seems not worthy, instead, you can buy a much cheaper camera that is way better than this one.

I love Sony for the technology and brilliant features that they offer in their cameras, providing a full-frame sensor on a compact body like this his extraordinary of course it comes with a caveat, it does not provide the expected in Body Image stabilization [IBIS] as that of other Sony cameras.

Its very good from Sony to provide us with the full-frame sensor on a very compact camera but I feel that it has not come with the correct pricing. To me, $1800 USD is really expensive for this camera body.

Questions in my mind for that $1800 USD

Can it shoot 4K videos in 60fps / 120fps?: No

- but for $200 USD more, Panasonic’s full-frame S5 shoots 4K at 60 fps and has a 10-bit internal recording for 4K

Do I get a dual card slot? : No

Do I have The Rolling shutter problem? : Yes

Does it shoot videos in 10-bits? : No, it shoots in 8-bits

How many photos can I take with a full charge? : 700 approx

8 Cons of Sony A7C

1. It is a small Factor camera may be called as a compact camera and it is very compact in big hands.

2. The autofocus system is not as good as Sony a7sIII

3. It has only one SD card slot and it is not possible to use it for professional work where you need a backup saving card

4. It has the old menu system and not the new menu system as Sony a7s III

5. It does not have have the front wheel or front dial on the index finger so for every adjustment you need to rely on the big dial on the back of the camera this comes a bit annoying when doing photography, where you might need to adjust the shutter speed for every shot or particularly during the photoshoot in the outdoors with natural light.

6. It does not have 1/8000 shutter speed

7. It does not have a lock so you can lock your Dials and buttons and they tend to change while you move your hands around the camera while shooting.

8. Spending 1800 dollars seems to be not worthy for a camera like this instead you can try but Canon RP that has a great colour sign from Canon it has all the Dials and wheels appropriately weighted supposed to be B&M it's a mirrorless obviously and comes with a cheaper price dentist camera

So before you buy this camera please check on the Canon R or Canon RP and then make your decision

Dual Pixel AutoFocus in 4K [24FPS/30FPS]

Shooting 4K in a 'Less than $1000' Camera is great, what if you can shoot in 4k with Canon's Dual Pixel Autofocus that can help you to keep your subject in focus, don't you think that is a great feature. This helped me a lot when I was shooting in a 'Run and shoot' conditions.

Shooting with autofocus is really handy when shooting on a Gimbal or a Steady Cam as manual focusing may be very difficult as you can disturb the operation of the gimbal or can bring in some shakes to a balanced steady cam.

Dual Pixel AutoFocus in 1080p [24FPS/30FPS/60FPS]

Canon 90D provides AutoFocus capability in 1080p video shooting in all frame rates [24FPS/30FPS/60FPS]. Canon's Dual Pixel Autofocus keeps the subject in focus even in fast movements. The focus adjust speed can be adjusted in the camera settings [Low / Medium / High], this is really a fantastic feature.

120 Frames per second Video in 1080p

Shooting in 120fps is great for faster actions and when they are played in 24fps on a timeline, the footage looks awesome. This 120 fps footage from Canon 90D is 1080p. Another advantage of 1080p footage is you don't need a powerful computer to edit them, unlike the 4K footage. I promise shooting in 120 frames will change your perspective of the 90D camera. Canon has done a marvellous job in this camera by including this 120 fps feature. We also expect the dual pixel autofocus to work at 120 fps, hope Canon will soon release an updated firmware for this.

Digital Image Stabilisation for Videos

Canon 90D has a Digital Image Stabilisation built in the body, yes it unbelievable but its a fact. It has 3 stages, [ Minimum, Normal, Enhanced ]. Canon does this with the cropping factor, the first 2 modes are good and the 'Enhanced' mode shows some wobbling in the picture to keep it stabilized, so I will not recommend this mode. This is very hand when shooting videos in handheld. This feature is common to all the shooting modes available in the canon 90D camera.

Support for UHS I & UHS-II Memory Cards

Canon 90D supports both UHS I and UHS-II cards. UHS I is the low-level memory cards good for taking pictures in normal mode, they have lower reading and writing speeds like around 60MB/second. This may be a blocking factor for the camera to write the image quicker when burst shooting or in storing higher bitrate video like 4K. This will lead to 2 things,

- Filling the Camera buffer soon as it takes more time to write the images into the memory card

- Frame drops in video content as writing speed are lower than required in higher formats of video.

UHS-II cards are great in this matter, they are build to read and write at higher speeds like more than 100MB/second. This will overcome the 2 issues faced by the UHS I cards. Canon has offered this feature at this mid-range camera while the other competitors have done this only in their high-range cameras.

In-Camera Picture Editor

There is an in-camera picture editor to do the basic adjustments to the picture taken. This may not be a full-fledge editor but it allows you to play with a few presets and custom adjustments before you can directly transfer your picture to your mobile devices thru the in-built WI-Fi of the Canon 90D.

Custom Profile addition

This is a feature in most of the Canon cameras, it helps you to add a custom Picture profile to your camera to the already available list. This is very helpful when shooting videos in the Canon 90D. As we don't have CLog in 90D we can add flat profiles like the CineStyle which increases the dynamic range in the footage which should be colour corrected and graded in post-production. All videographers love this feature in the Canon DSLRs

1/8000 shutter speed

I see this as a great feature as a photographer when shooting in bright sunlight without any ND filters, this is the best friend of you. Even most Sony mirrorless cameras provide only 1/4000 shutter speed but Canon 90D has 1/8000. This may not be a major feature but when you don't have this its a pain when taking pictures in the bright light and open aperture. I hope all photographers agree to this point.

11 FPS Burst mode in RAW images

Canon 90D has 11 frames burst mode in RAW, this is fantastic when shooting sports and high-speed action shots like races, dances, action and water events. This is also helpful in wildlife photography as you cannot ask a wild bear to give you a stunning pose in the jungle. I use this when I shoot birds, particularly flying birds and have captured the flapping wings during their flight. The auto-focus is also complementing while doing the burst-mode shooting.

Flip - Touch Screen

Canon 90D has a fully articulating FLIP-TOUCH screen. This really helps when

I'm shooting a video on a gimbal
doing very low angle shots.

When shooting a video on a gimbal I don't need to touch any physical buttons on the camera as it might induce some shakes in the footage, with this touch screen I can access most of the camera functions by just a touch.

I can flip this screen when I shoot pictures/video in a very low or high angle, this shows exactly what I'm shooting. Moreover, this has 80% focus points on the touch screen, to change my focus I need not turn the focus ring on my lens but I can touch the screen and Canon 90D does the focus automatically. Isn't is great for a photographer or a videographer to change the focus on runtime without a focus-puller !!

Dynamic Range

What is Dynamic Range?

It is the difference between the darkest and the brightest part of tones in an image. The human eye has the highest dynamic range, that is why there the differences in the image from a camera and the natural human eye. The dynamic range depends on the camera you use, the high grade and expensive cameras have much more Dynamic Range that the cameras on a budget or cheaper. Dynamic Range is measured in 'Stops'

There are a few tweaks available for Canon DSLRs to increase the Dynamic range to a few more stops.

The more dynamic range helps us to see more details in the darkest and the brightest part of the picture. That is why the Dynamic Range is important on any camera, so the camera can capture more details it could. The human eye has 20-24 stops of dynamic range, whereas the professional cine cameras have 14-16 stops of Dynamic Range.

Why is Dynamic Range important in Videography and Photography?

Dynamic Range is important in Videography and Photography because of the level of details you can capture with the given stops of dynamic range. With the more dynamic range stops in a camera, the more overexposure and underexposure will become lesser in the output.

The image from a 14 stop dynamic range camera looks almost like a flat and desaturated image. This will help you in the colour grade stages of the production. In colour grade, you can decide the look of the film like warmer or colder or any other colour tone you need.

Advantages of Dynamic Range in Cameras

1. Dynamic range helps to capture more details in the footage, so it could help in the post-production

2. The final image can have a high level of details in the darkest and the brightest parts of the final image/video

3. Dynamic range gives more freedom in the Colour Grade phase of the post-production.

Dynamic Range in common DSLR Cameras

Most of the budget DSLRs come with 8-10 stops of dynamic range, it is half of what a normal human eye can see or perceive. A few more expensive mirrorless cameras from Sony and Canon have a more dynamic range from 12-14 stops. They also shoot in S-Log and C-Log profiles to help the colour correction in the post-production phase.

Samples of Video shot on Canon 90D DSLR

Both these videos were shot on Canon 90D with CineStyle profile which gave a flat picture. This flat picture was then colour balanced and colour graded. You can see the details outstanding because of the CineStyle profile which helped to capture a few more stops of the dynamic range that the normal profiles in Canon 90D.

If less than $900 camera can capture such extraordinary footage then imagine about the cameras higher dynamic range and Log profiles. They can produce 10 times more quality output than what you have seen in the above 4K Video or UHD Videos you seen on Youtube.

Role of Profiles used :

Portrait and Landscape Profile

Usually, we use the 'Landscape' and 'Portrait' profile for shooting a picture or video. These modes are already preset for the tone and colour. The Portrait mode is tuned or set for smooth skin on portraits and the Landscape mode is tuned for the more blue sky. So the priority set on the Portrait mode is the skin and the Landscape mode is the blue sky. Here other equations are not forgotten but lesser priority is given.

Neutral Profile

Neutral profile keeps all the colours saturated and the contrast to a minimum level depending on the manufacturer. So all the colours and the contrast are available for any adjustment during the colour correction and colour grading in the post-production. With such a flat picture you can boost a particular shade of colour for more details if required.

CineStyle - Flat Profile

CineStyle is a flat profile for Canon cameras from a company called Technicolor. This profile is available and can be downloaded for free from their website. You can upload it to any Canon Camera through the Canon Connect software provided. CineStyle profile is more preferred by videographers using Canon DSLRs or mirrorless cameras. Of course, the colour correction and colour grading are required for the footage.

Difference in the Contract

Constant of a picture shows you the difference in bright and dark parts of the image. The higher the contrast the better the picture will look or the picture will outstand. But you tend to lose the details in the dark portions if the darkness is increased. Same to the brightest part of the image, if there is more contract the brightest part might blow up and will definitely hide the details.

This is why in a flat profile and Log profiles [SLog on Sony Cameras and Clog on Canon Cameras] the contrast is kept at a minimum level, to capture all the possible details in the footage.

ISO factor

When talking about Dynamic Range we cannot avoid the ISO [Sensitivity of the sensor or film]. ISO determines the sensitivity of the image, if the ISO is higher in the low light situations or to capture details in the dark parts of the field, it will introduce noise in the image or footage.

This ISO noise will affect the quality of the output in many ways, even in the colour correction, colour grading, sharpness when we try to render the image. So the videographers and photographers will always keep the ISO to a minimum level st all times. The ISO is increased only when the shooting happens in low lit conditions. This is why the de-noising tools have become popular in the market.

SONY A7C

Sony mirrorless cameras are famous among the mirrorless market. Sony alpha a7r iii and sony alpha a6400 has proved what Sony can do in the camera space.

I will be discussing on the following

Sony a7c is the most compact full-frame interchangeable lens camera in the market with a 24MP full-frame sensor. It is with the size similar to a6600. This camera has 10 stops of Dynamic Range.

This is a tiny beast for photography. It has a 5 axis In Body Image Stabilization built-in. It is like a fusion of the Sony A7 III and the Sony A6600. It comes with a kit lens the size of the 28-60mm [f4-f5.6]. It has 4K Video with awesome autofocus.

It has more cons than pros as per the expert's review. All these comes again at a higher price. Canon has offered most of these features in their £900 cameras with Canon’s fantastic colour science. Sony a7c has more room for improvement in the skin tones area. Still, we could see a magenta shade in every picture.

Bikini photography

Equipment :

1. Dslr camera with an 18-55mm lens: the 18-55 will help you to shoot wide-angle and you can show the wider background. You can make it to 50mm for a portrait shot but on a bikini shoot, the background plays an important role.

2. Softbox, flash, reflectors whatever is necessary for you.

The blue skies, beach sand, trees and the water, all these will add more to your composition.

Models :

Try to get the professional models or at least the amateur models who have learnt the art of posing, because the pose is the key to success to bikini shoots. A good pose can bring an outstanding output but a bad pose will terribly spoil the rest of the things like your background, lighting and your efforts.

Strictly no playful and funny poses. All poses must be professional, this should be informed to the model if she is an amateur.

The poses must be elegant and sexy enough to showcase the curves of the models.

Scared models :

If the model is scared, first talk to her very friendly and softly.

Analyze what makes her scary and try to help her in doing that.

Costume :

No pantyhose during a bikini Photoshoot. The colour of the bikini should help the model look better and contrast to the background. This is a minimum requirement and something that will be better depending on the location is appreciated.

At least 2 sets of bikini should be used for 1 session of bikini shoot.

Personal makeup kits should be possessed by the models.

Care should be taken that the models should not sweat.

light: the sun is the primary light for any daytime outdoor shoot. Try to have a softbox , a flash for shadow filling and reflectors.

Technique :

Shot 1: from the direction of the sun

Shot 2: opp. to the direction of the sun

Shot 3: from below the level of the model

Shot 4: the blue sky is the only background

Shot 5: try to get the palm trees on the background

Shot 6: take some shots in the water

These are the major shots and rest is all that you compose from your ideas and experience.

DSLR Tutorial - Day 1

This program is very precise and no blabbers. Everything is dealt with the point and no rubbish stories. Since you would have known about the digital camera and its usage you have now upgraded your camera to DSLR. So let's start from the DSLR and its basics of control will continue.

Camera: A camera is a device that captures the environment and its objects into a 2D chemical film, that can be then printed into a photographic paper.

How does Camera work?

The light-absorbing film is placed in the darkest chamber of the camera. For a split second, the external light is exposed from a pinhole by a rapid shutter mechanism, and that light is absorbed on the chemical film.

aperture - is the pinhole, that regulates the amount of light

shutter - that regulates the time for which the light comes through the aperture.

Digital Camera: The same process is done electronically, but

the light-absorbing film - replaced with -> light-absorbing sensor. The sensitivity of the sensor can be controlled and it is called the ISO, starting from 100 to 6400 and growing, where 100 is the lesser sensitivity and it increases.

As sensitivity increases, the noise will also increase.

What you see is reflected into the viewfinder it is directly imposed to the sensor that is behind the aperture and the shutter.

3. Get high-resolution pictures.

4. Add various types of external flashes and accessories.

Portraits Photoshoot with Canon 55-250mm Lens

Portraits play a major role in any photographers life, it is very important because, it will portray the expression from the figure to the frame, and also the ability of the photographer in doing that.

Sigma 70-300 Vs Canon 55-250mm

I was using an 18-55mm lens, but I need something more so I planned to buy a Sigma 70-300 lens, but it did not have an image stabilizer in that. Any way of buying a Canon will always be good and worth.

I tried this 55-250mm from canon with IS, I thought it is just 50mm less but all my photos are very stabilized and a S$100 lesser so I can invest in a Speedlite /Flashgun. So I bought the 55-250mm Canon lens.

I took my Canon 55-250mm for the outdoor photoshoot, and it was amazing, I have not done such shots anytime in my life. Check the below pictures from Canon 500D and Canon 55-250mm...

Very impressive & inexpensive IS tele-zoom Lens

Pros:

Lightweight [ Reduces camera shake during zoom shots]

Compact [just an inch more than 18-55mm]

Affordably priced [Sells ~S$300]

Optical image stabilization for sharper handheld photos at slow shutter speeds.

Cons:

All-plastic construction, which is less durable than metal [Need to handle carefully]

Sharpness not as expected at 250mm [but the image is managable].

Conclusion:

Very good Lens for an affordable price.

Image quality is excellent and can frame your shots properly

Much more than 18-55mm

Portrait Photography Tips

Portrait Photography reveals the beauty of the human who is the subject. Always your photography should be more beautiful than the real person. The photograph not only includes the person but also the background. Minot modifications on the background might add mighty effects to the foreground and the subject.

Blurred background effect :

- Use AV mode in the DSLR Camera.

- buy a lens which has a bigger aperture, and therefore a smaller f-number for a much greater blurring effect than a kit lens.

- buy a standard 50mm lens with an aperture of around f1.8 or even smaller for better results.

Fill-in flash :

When we capture portraits in outdoors during the daylight, we find the shadows on the other side of the light source. To brighten these dark shadows we can use the pop-up flash that your camera has. This is called a fill-in flash.

- Use P mode in the DSLR Camera.

- After using the pop-up flash, if the image is brighter then reduce the power of your flash to negative or something reasonable to get the balanced light in the picture or step a little back from the subject.

Metering Mode :

- choose a spot metering mode when shooting portraits

Focusing Mode:

- prefer the single point setting as it allows you to pinpoint the exact part of the subject that you want in focus

ISO :

- always use ISO between 100-200, this will keep your image grain-less and remember the aperture needs to be adjusted accordingly to get a sharper image

How You See Matters

Take a look at this image, at the first guess you may see it as something different. But once you look in deeper you will realize that it is a cup of coffee. This is a simple coffee on my desk, but I want to see it differently. To make it different, go for the difference in everything, I meant... the lighting [here I used the natural sunlight from a window], the appearance of the subject [I sprinkled some cocoa powder on the coffee, for the texture], next, the most important, equipment, I used my mobile phone to snap this.

This is what I'm trying to say, see everything differently and try to bring the subject and surroundings inside your imaginary frame. If you feel that this would be a better photograph, never hesitate, do a click with your camera or your mobile phone camera. Once I was in travel and my camera batteries drained and I came across a beautiful scene, guess what I did. I borrowed a strangers camera, took a snap and asked him to mail me that snap, he did it for me happily.

Do things differently, so out of 100 times, I'm sure at least 10 masterpieces would be born.

Importance of Tripod

Tripod will,

1. Avoid the camera shakes, only if the camera trigger is remotely operated or timed.

2. No one should hold the camera to take pictures including you.

3. When zoom increases, shakes will also increase in the same ratio, so tripod will avoid that.

4. Night shots are very much prone to blur images for the exposing time is long to capture an image; here tripod is the oasis in the desert.

We can achieve what we want in the many good ways, choose the most economical one, so you can save money by not spending them. As far as the flash diffuser is concerned, what does the diffuser do?

It diffuses the light so the light is spread all over in an even fashion. Any material that can diffuse light can be put in front of the camera flash so the light from the flash is diffused.

What I have tried and succeed.

1. Tissue Paper: Just wrap the facial tissue paper around the lighting area of your camera flash.

Remember to wrap with single or double or triple layers as per your requirement.

Where to use: I use a tissue paper during the night shots, I will use a single layer so the required amount of light from the flash is not missed. If you think it flashes more light , wrap with double layer of tissue paper.

Remember, as the distance between camera and the subject increases, the thickness of the tissue should decrease.

2. Empty translucent energy drink plastic bottle: This is a plastic bottle that is translucent so, you can cut it accordingly to fit the camera flash. It will give you good results.

Where to use: Use this kind of diffusers for the indoors.

What to Photography?

You have this entire world to photograph, start from your room to the sky. Try to find the appropriate subject you want to capture.

Where to Start

You may start from the dewdrops you find on the grass blades and leaves of some trees around your house. I tried this one in an evening after rain.

These are just left on the roadside. Can you imagine, I was just on the roadside and zooming the leaves on the roadside. It may look crazy to other people but just see the results, they don't know this.

Anything can be beautiful if you want to make it beautiful.

Remember these before you take a good photo

Keep in mind

Think you are the only person in that spot.
Don't care about the people and what they think about you.
Try to get the beautiful perspective of that subject.
Don't care about the number of snaps you take, try with different exposure,...
Think you as an artist, you see what others don't see.
Remember you are blessed to take this photo.

DSLR IN MANUAL MODE

The key to understanding thing is to understand the exposure triangle and how to manipulate it to your full advantage.

The exposure triangle refers to the three elements: the ISO, the aperture, and the shutter speed. These three things when finely tuned will give you the best exposure possible! These each impact one another. So if you adjust one, you will have to compensate by adjusting another to get the proper amount of exposure plus get the effect you want to get.

ISO
The ISO measures how sensitive the image will be to light. The higher the ISO, the more grainy or noisier your image will become. If you want a crystal clear picture, then you will want to have a lower ISO. An ISO of 100 is considered normal; therefore, 100 or lower will make clear pictures in most settings. This is ideal when there is plenty of light.

Good Light: ISO 100
Dull Light: ISO 200-400
Nighttime: ISO 400 and above [This may vary upon the shutter speed and aperture]

We often have to give and take when deciding what is best for each shot. Like in this instance, we may have to allow more grain, to get a picture to appear still. Also, by bumping up the ISO, you are also able to take pictures at a smaller aperture.

Another time when you may need or want to bump up your ISO is when it is dark, or you are not able to use flashes like at a concert or art museum. The reason for this, since you are unable to use a flash, you may have trouble getting enough light in order to have a well-exposed picture. By bumping up the ISO, it allows you to take brighter pictures by giving the image sensor more light.

Aperture

Aperture is what gives the most creative control. The Aperture measures how much light enters the camera's lens. Aperture will be measured by the f-numbers on the lens barrel. This function will help you if you want to have that blurred background effect which is also known as bokeh. So if someone has a really sharp image with a blurred background, someone might say this picture has great bokeh!

What the f-number represents is how wide the lens is opened. The smaller the number the smaller the opening of the lens is. This will cause more of the picture to be in focus, which means the foreground, and the background will be in equal focus. Another way you might hear this is, your picture has a larger depth of field. Whereas if the f-stop is higher, then you will have a blurred effect in the background and foreground if intended with a smaller depth of field.

If you are taking a picture of a person, you should focus on someone's eye. This is especially true when you want a small depth of focus. The reason for this is because if you choose to have the lens opened wide for the picture, then you have a very narrow field of what will be in focus. By focusing on the eyes, you are making sure that their face will be in focus, especially their eyes which is the heart of any person's soul.

As I said, F-stops can become confusing. The biggest confusion about aperture is because the larger the number the less that is in focus. Another way of saying this is the larger the number the smaller the aperture, which seems counter-intuitive, but is in fact correct. That's why I try to focus on remembering that the higher the number the wider the lens since that is why they are numbered that way. One good way to remember this is, the more concentrated you are on one spot, the higher you want the F-stop number to be.

For instance, if you have bad eyesight, you can try this, and you might understand. Take off your glasses or take out your contacts. Focus on a spot with your eyes wide open. Everything is blurry, right. Well, now make a really small hole with your fingers, and look through that hole. You will find that you actually can see better through the small hole. That's why people squint. Well, it's the same way with the camera. If you want to see the whole picture better the wider the lens needs to be; therefore, the bigger the number needs to be.

One of the reasons aperture is my favourite is because of the ability to make the background fuzzy. By adding bokeh, it makes my subject the centre of focus. It has allowed me to step out of always making my picture perfectly centred. I can focus on my daughter on the right-hand part of the screen, with kids in the background and all around her, but because she is in focus and they are not, she is the one that catches your eye. It has allowed me to create some of my favourite photos.

Shutter Speed

The shutter speed is probably the easiest to understand since it determines the amount of time that the shutter is open to allow light to enter into the lens. This is measured literally by fractions of seconds, although the shutter speed could be left open for days or the smallest fraction of a second possible. If your subject is moving or you are taking a picture of a child, you will want to make sure that the shutter speed is as low as possible, while getting the effect you are hoping with the aperture and ISO. A good starting point would be 1/50th of a second. Faster if the child is active, 1/50th might be fine for an infant or an adult. Remember these are fractions, so 1/50th is more than and slower than 1/250th.

It has been recommended by every photography blog I've read that 99 per cent of the time you will want your camera at 1/50th of a second or faster. Any slower than that and you will see movement in your picture. One blogger referred to this as camera shakes, which interrupts the clearness of your photo.

In other words, the camera will pick up anything that appears in that frame during that time. Someone might choose to have shutter speed open for longer periods like a couple seconds if they want to show activity with a stationary object. There is a lot of creativity to be had. For instance, if a train goes by, and you take a picture of a person waiting. The person may be in perfect focus while the train is a big blur.

Whether we are talking about aperture, ISO, or shutter speed, the key to getting the effect you want is by balancing these three. Your goal should be to change these three elements so that way they work in perfect harmony to project the most artistic picture possible. One way to make sure that you are going to have a correctly exposed picture is by looking at the EV meter on your DSLR camera. There will be an EV number somewhere in your viewfinder. You want it to read +/-0, that is your goal. Although, if it is reading -1 or +1 or any other variant then you need to do some adjusting with the above things until you get the best exposure possible. You will learn to meter more easily as you gain experience and believe me it takes practice. I'm still learning the ins and outs of the camera, but at least now I'm having fun experimenting! Bottom line, the key is to have a good understanding of what each element does, in order to get the best picture possible.

Nikon D3000 DSLR Camera

Nikon launches its latest baby DSLR, the D3000, one of its entry-level camera.

A programmable Function button--you can set it to control the self-timer, release mode, image quality, ISO sensitivity, white balance, or Active D-Lighting menus, as well as to toggle a grid display in the viewfinder--lies under your left thumb, though it's a little hard to differentiate from the flash pop-up/compensation button that sits above it by feel alone. Behind the shutter button circumscribed by the power, switch are the exposure compensation and info buttons; the latter toggles the back display.

A lot of more useful shooting features missing that other cameras in this price class provide, including wireless flash control and an HDMI connector. Most egregiously, though, the D3000 lacks simple exposure and flash exposure bracketing.

Color, exposure, and sharpness (we tested with the 18-55mm VR kit lens) are generally very good and its noise profile looks better than most of its competitors.

6 Tips on Photographing Flowers

Flowers Photography

1. Use a tripod

you get sharper photos by ensuring your camera doesn’t move.
Use the camera self-timer or a remote to trigger the shot.

2. Appropriate time to photograph
Anytime when there is no too much bright light reflected from the flower. Need to judge the best lighting conditions, it depends on the photographer.

3. Position of the camera
Basically choose the exact parallel position, subject and the sensor on the face to face position, remember this is a usual shot anyone will try.
Try to move on possible 360 degrees and find the best position, don't limit yourself to one particular position.

4. Shutter speed
Use a fast shutter of at least 1/200 sec.
ISO to 200 or 400 to get this fast of a shutter

5. Which flower to choose
Choose a flower that looks very full in shape and in good size and that is in a position that is convenient for you to photograph.

6. Care for Nature
Do not disturb the flower and its surrounding else we may miss that beauty from our planet.

Enhance the lady lips

Enhance Lady Lips in Photoshop

Always the attraction part of a picture of a lady is her lips. A glossy lip of a woman speaks more to the picture. Here is what I tried and succeeded in the enhancement of the lips.

Step 1: Select the lips of the woman in a picture into a new PSD file in photoshop.
Step 2: Select the lips alone with the feather=2.
Step 3: Adjust the levels as shown below or a bit darken so the colour shows out.

Step 4: Press Ctrl+J so the selected lips is copied as a new layer.

Step 5: Select the Unsharp Mask and give the values mentioned below and OK.

Step 6: Now move the lips layer to the original picture and adjust the transparency according to your choice.

Colour Noise removal in your photos

Photo Noise Removal in Photoshop

When we do not have sufficient light, the photo seems to get the (colour)noise on them. This is very embarrassing when you zoom in your photo. I have tried to filter this noise in photoshop.
