Kozhikode (Kerala): A new trade union SDTU (Social Democratic Trade Union) has been formed on May 1, the world workers day, at Kozhikode which was one for the battle ground for workers rights. The inaugural conference offered the working class of Kerala a new work culture. New union was declared by Social Democratic Party national president E Abubaker at Nalanda Auditorium here. He accused the present trade unions of making unnecessary hartal and strike calls and raise slogans for the sake of their mother organisations. It is this attitude of the unions turned the working class of the state inactive. Along with fighting for the cause of working class SDTU will inculcate sense of social responsibility among them, he added.

National ad-hoc committee member Adv. K M Ashraf declared the names of office bearers of the party to the big applause from the audience. A Vasu (president), Karamana Rasaq (vice president), O Aliyar (general secretary), Roy Arakkal (secretary), Adv. A A Raheem (secretary), Muhammed Kunhi (Tresurer) were declared office bearers. Other members are Nasar Kalavur, Noushad Mangalassery, Jhonson Kollam, Haneefa Kozhinjampara, Hakeem Mundakkayam, A A Subramanian and Ismail Kammana.

SDPI state president Nasaruddeen Elamaram presided over the function. M K Manoj Kumar, Majeed Faizee, Muvattyupuzha Ashraf Moulavi, Thulaseedharan Pallikkal, Samkuty Jacob and C P Latheef also spoke.

Nellai : Thousands of people started a fasting to oppose Koodangulam Nuclear Power Plant at Idinthakarai village, Nellai district of Tamilnadu on September 11, 2011 onwards. Yesterday around 2:30 pm SDPI state president KKSM Dehlan Baqavi arrived at the protest spot and expressed his support and solidarity.

If this Nuclear Power Plant starts functioning people around 50 Km circumference will realize its adverse effect. Agricultural lands will be destroyed and become infertile. Environment will be polluted and enriched Marine resources will be spoilt and destroyed.

If any accident took place, around 50 km surrounding will be devastated and it will continue to affect many generations to come.

Even today, People in Russia is still affected by Chernobyl nuclear disaster.Aftermath of tsunami disaster in March this year, Many Japanese were affected in the nuclear disaster at Fukushima Nuclear plant,Japan, So many countries have announced to close their nuclear plants.

While Kerala had opposed the project, Without any consultation from the people, Nuclear Power Plant was started in Tamilnadu, is condemnable.

Central Government should abandon this project immediately. Tamilnadu chief minister should exert pressure on Central government to stop this project.

Social democratic party of India is gradually fixing it's foots in West Bengal. The party has now come forward with a demand for reservation in Govt Jobs and Higher Education to Muslims because Muslims are the most backward and under privileged community here. SDPI is a party which strives for the strengthening of backward communities without prejudice of religion caste or creed.
People in West Bengal have got a glorious heritage of strive for freedom, justice and equality. It is not mere a past history. The present generation also has got a sense of struggle for rights and freedom.
But I think this is the right time to think whether our efforts are in the right path. Am I not correct in saying almost all the political parties of India have deviated from the ideology on which they are built up?
Along with the rest of the world our nation also has fallen in the hands of capitalism and imperialism.
Ordinary mass of the nation are now living under the shadow of two threats. Those are poverty and terror.
On the other hand our government claims that they have gone far ahead in the way of development and war against terrorism.
Development is nothing other than Capitalism.
New capitalists have accepted the term ‘development' to cheat the modern society which is very keen about humanity and equality.
The government highlights a fake statistics of financial growth.
When they claim economy development, above 85 percent of the population is struggling to meet the two ends of needs of life.
More than 50 percent are below the poverty line.
While our nation live on agriculture, the government has ignored that that area completely.
Amount of government expenditure on agricultural growth is being decreased year by year.
Agricultural land is forcefully handed over to neo-capitalist agencies for industrialization.
Special Economic Zones are designed to strengthen the grips of money powers over the laborers and the villagers.
Actually, our nation has accepted capitalism in the pretext of development.
None of the so called main stream political parties is raising voice against these anti people attitude of capitalist agencies. In another words, our political parties themselves have become an agency to capture and handover people's rights and belongings to money powers.
American President Obama is visiting India. He will address Indian Parliament. There is an impression that Obama is gentle and generous. He is in no way less than George Bush.
In fact our country has thrown away the values of non alliance movement. Virtually it has now become a war ally of America.
The history of our nation has got a black mark of casteism and communalism. These two evils are not eradicated from the secular democratic India. Instead they have strengthened their influence over all the folds of our society and administration. Hatred and enmity is spread.
In addition our country has now imported hatred from Israel. The most communal force in the world, Israel, is the closest friend and guide of our country now.
India started diplomatic relationship with Israel during the year 1992. It was not BJP or Vajpayee who started this unholy tie. It was none other than Mr. Narasimha Rao. He gave two blows to the Indian secular society. One is the demolition of Babri Masjid and the other, opening of the doors of our nation to the evil conspirators of Israel.
Ever since this relationship mysterious incidents and explosions are taking place continuously in our country. Muslim youths are victimized in these untoward incidents. Later it is clear that some hindutwa fascist forces were behind these attacks. But the black mark over the Indian Muslim society still prevails.
War against terrorism is American war against Muslims all over the world. Intelligence ties of the country with America and Israel has dragged us into this war. War against terrorism has awarded fear only to our country.
V L Lenin, the leader of Russian revolution had stated that capitalism will be followed by imperialism. We see his words turning true in India. Capitalism came here in the name ‘development'. Closely following it, imperialism also has set foots here in the name ‘war against terrorism'. Followers of Lenin may be aware of the capitalist forces entered in our country. But they are not coming forward for a total defence. As regards the imperialism, the leftist parties of our country are not ready to realize the imperialist agenda behind the war against terrorism. The reason, I suspect, is prejudice against Islam and Muslims.
History of our democracy begins with the freedom of the nation. None of the political parties of independent India has tried to teach the values and benefits of democracy to the common mass. Ordinary people of our country are utilized only as vote banks. Power is confined only to the upper class castes. Dalits, tribals and backward communities including Muslims are not only driven away from power, but they are denied of justice, legal rights, and civil rights. Democracy in India was never for a government of people, by people and for people. It was some kind hero worship in the beginning and now only a trade of power by exchange on money.
Adequate representation in power by various diversities of Indian society is to be ensured for the safety of our democracy. Reservation of seats in legislative bodies and government employment is recommended on this ground. Power class, reluctant to approve this theory is actually endangering our democracy.
Social Democratic Party of India upholds two slogans. Freedom from hunger, freedom from fear. Threats generated by the neo-capitalist and imperialist forces, which keep hatred towards suppressed class of people, are addressed by these slogans. I invite all those who love the country to line up in this new field of struggle.
In Bengal Muslims are most backward. Justice Rachinder Sachar has highlighted this fact in his report on the backwardness of Indian Muslims. There are resources among Bengal Muslims. This crowed itself is a forceful weapon. Think about a self upraise. Get rid of the nostalgic thoughts about undivided India. Partition of the nation is no longer an acceptable excuse for your backwardness. Be aware that this is the third generation after the partition. Be aware that political empowerment is an unavoidable step towards survival and development of any community. Be a part of SDPI and take your role in this struggle for survival.

Muslim World Remains Disenchanted with Obama: SDPI

The Social Democratic Party of India, (SDPI), has questioned the euphoria being shown by the Indian Government and the media in highlighting the proposed visit of United States of America President Barack Obama to India in November second week. There is no perceptible change in the policies pursued by the United States towards Muslim world under Mr. Obama after the change of guards in the White House.
The SDPI national president E. Abubacker and general secretary A. Sayeed in a joint statement said that Muslims in India and elsewhere in the world had great hopes from Mr. Obama but all that have been belied. The new President did not match his words with deeds and as such Muslim World remains disenchanted with him for waging war in the name of Peace which was initiated by his predecessor in Afghanistan and Iraq. The change seeker President Obama had advocated changes in attitude towards Muslims. But mere words won't help. Muslims in America or those who visit America face racial discrimination. They are racially profiled. Mr. Obama's verbal promises have not taken a practical shape as yet.

The joint statement recalled that in his historic speech at Cairo University last year, Mr. Obama had called for a 'new beginning' with the Muslim world but that is yet to be realized in letter and spirit. He advocated a partnership with Muslim communities across the globe on the basis of 'mutual interest and respect', but this too has to unfold in action. It remains yet to be seen that the US is Muslim-friendly as Muslims are not too happy with the US' policy towards the Islamic world. It was expected that Mr. Obama would take efforts to stop Israel from building Jewish settlements in the occupied territory of Palestine.

The aims and objects of Mr. Obama’s visit to India are not very clear. The general perception is that it is the commencement of commercial negotiations between Indian operators and the US companies. It seems that it is just a business trip with trade matters high on the agenda. Capitalist nature of Indo-American political relationship is going to be more visible. The American president has already waived away the chances of India’s entry in to the UN Security council. Some anti-people moves on nuclear liability also are suspected to take place. The rumblings going on for justice and freedom in many parts of the world for decades together, is unlikely to crop up in the meetings between the Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and the US President Barack Obama.

Barack Obama has not yet responded to the Amnesty International stand on the survivors of Bhopal gas disaster. The Amnesty International has asked US President Barack Obama to support the survivors of the Bhopal gas disaster who are demanding accountability, justice and an end to more than 25 years of human rights violations. It had strongly demanded to the President Barack Obama that the American administration and Indian Government should cooperate to ensure that those accused of causing Bhopal disaster, including UCC, are made to face trial and that Bhopal survivors are able to obtain redress. The survivors and five activist organizations representing them have recently written to Mr. Obama about the need to bring UCC/Dow to justice, which has not been complied with.

Resolution # 1

Withdraw AFSPA and Start Dialogue

This meeting of the National Working Committee of SDPI calls up on the Union Government to immediately withdraw Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act from Jammu & Kashmir and Manipur. Draconian powers conferred on the security forces by the Act have been proved to be the single most important source of horrible rights violations in Kashmir and Manipur. This meeting likes to remind the authorities that popular struggles cannot be crushed by mere military or police action as proved in Kashmir and such places. Since June 2010 more than 100 innocent people have been killed in the Valley. The ongoing agitation is the reflection of the wide spread anger and agony of common people against presence of security forces which have harshly wrought havoc in the peaceful life of the people. This meeting appeals to the Union Government to withdraw AFSPA with immediate effect and initiate dialogue with leaders who really represent the Kashmiri people and bring about an honorable solution acceptable to all the parties.

Babri Masjid

The NWC meeting appreciates the stand of Muslims that they would accept any verdict on the title suit of the Babri Masjid. It also hopes that the Government will take stern action against the Hindutwa fascist forces who want to make political capital out of the issue through actions intended to destroy communal peace in the country..

Distribute Food Grains to the Hungry and the Needy

The NWC is deeply concerned that a large sections of the population go hungry while large quantity of wheat rice and other food grains is rotting in the warehouses, public and private.. This meeting also endorses the order passed by the Supreme Court on the issue and urges the Government to take immediate steps to distribute among the hungry and the needy at the earliest.

Reservation for the Minorities

In the backdrop of Gujjar and Jat reservation campaigns, this meeting of the NWC demands that the Government honor its commitment to introduce reservation for Muslims and other minorities and to table ATR on the Sachchar Committee and Ranganath Mishra Commission Reports in the next session of Parliament itself . The NWC also underlines the fact that reservation is nothing but a tool for social and political empowerment for the marginalized communities.

Mysore by election: SDPI got third place

Social Democratic Party of India candidate Kiran Kumar had to satisfy for third slot in a by election held for ward no 14 of Mysore city recently.

Congress has won the contest with 1971 votes while BJP place with 1791 votes in second. SDPI managed to secure third place 579 one slot before JDS which only got 278 votes.

Obama is telling Pakistan to bring the perpetrators of Mumbai attack before justice; at the same time his government is still protecting David Headly who is believed to be one of the masterminds of the attack. This is the clear evidence of the American double standard, he added.

Kerala: Mystery over US Survey in Muslim Area

Thiruvananthapuram: Mystery surrounds over a survey conducted in Muslim populated area here on behalf of an American agency. The survey was conducted at Karimadom Colony, home to about a 100 poor families on Oct 2, by a Kochi-based organisation for the Washington-based Princeton Survey Research Associate International.
Though the survey was done last month it became public only when some TV channels brought the news out yesterday. Some questions in the survey which are meant to measure Muslim’s allegiance and loyalty to their homeland and to question their patriotism are real causes of concern. It is not clear why this survey was conducted and with whose permission.
Feeling suspicious about the 83-page questionnaire and its contents, especially about 30 questions that needed to be answered only by Muslims, the locals immediately reported the matter to police. The police registered a complaint against the organisation but let off the five-member woman survey team.
The questions that needed to be answered by Muslim respondents only were about how religious they were, whether they wore the burqa, their opinion on US President Barack Obama administration, about Middle East issues, Israel, Bangladesh Muslims, among others.
The survey starts with questions to know about respondent’s attitude towards Indian Prime Minister, national government, Indian military etc. Some of the questions are having preconceived notions that Muslims are against democracy and governments of the country. The survey is also meant to ‘measure’ their ‘respect’ towards persons like Usama Bin Ladin, Hasan Nasrullah of Husbullah, Ahmedinejad, the president of Iran, and organizations like Jamaath-e-Islami and Lashkar-e-Thayyiba etc. Here are some questions in the survey:
1. Do you consider yourself first as a Muslim or as an Indian citizen?
2. Are you of the opinion that Shari-ath law should be enacted in the place of official laws of the country?
3. Do you support the view that those who are trying to oppose your beliefs should be fought against?
4. If a fidayeen get killed during a bomb attack, can it be justified as an Islamic act?
5. Is it right to vote for a candidate who is having other religious belief?
6. Why do you believe that persons like Usama Bin Laden are enjoying popularity?
7. What is your opinion about Iran? If u support why?
8. What is your attitude towards America and Israel and why?
9. Do you believe that America is against Muslims?
10. Do you support America’s Afghan policy?
Kerala government has decided to seek central government help to unravel the mystery behind the motive of the survey as per the recommendation of state intelligence that looked into the issue. 'We will seek the help of the central government and its agencies to find out why this happened here and for whom this was done and all other details,' State Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan told reporters here Wednesday.

SDPI welcomes badanwal verdict

Mysore: Social Democratic Party of India, Mysore district, has welcomed the verdict of Mysore district court, sentencing life for culprits of Badanwal Dalit Massacre in 2007. The party said it is a victory for daliths against Brahminist forces who exploit them.

SDPI wished that let verdict become a lesson for the Brahmin forces that often indulges in dalith exploitation.

The party also urged in a press release, that local administration and police should take measures to ensure security for the daliths and should take strong action against those who exploit them in the name of caste.

The press release stated that the party did not tolerate any kind of exploitation and illegitimacy against Daliths.

The party also warned a protest if any kind of such practice occurred in the future.

Twenty people were sentenced to life imprisonment by a court here Thursday for killing three Dalits 17 years ago during a clash over allowing members of the Dalit community to enter a village temple.

“Even now people of the country dying due to lack of food, though we achieved freedom before 60 years. Weaker sections of the society are leaving under insecurity. Prof. Anas Sworn in as Block Panchayath Member

Kochi: Prof. Anas who had secured a thumping victory in local body election from jail sworn in as block panchayath member from Vanchinadu division today. Anas who was implicated in Muvattupuzha teacher assault case had been in judicial custody. He was escorted by police from Viyyur central jail to Vazhakkulam block panchayath to take the oath. K. Kunjumuhammed, senior member of block panchayath administered the oath to Anas under the supervision of electoral officer Vasantha Kumari.

After taking the oath, Prof. Anas thanked God and all the people who voted him to victory. Earlier Ernakulam Sessions Court had granted him permission to participate in swearing in ceremony.
Hundreds of people including SDPI workers gathered at block panchayath premises to receive their new representative. The people who had been waiting him for hours greeted him with slogans and cheers, when he came out of the police van with a big smile on his face.
While returning to the police vehicle on his way back to the jail, he told the media persons that his victory was a befitting reply from the part of people against the state terrorism.

Anas defeated his UDF rival by a margin of 1,902 votes, while the LDF candidate came third. Anas had contested the seat in SDPI ticket after obtaining permission from the local court and could neither campaign for the poll nor cast his vote.
Ernakulam Sessions Court will consider his bail application tomorrow.
Also other new members of the local bodies took oath to their respective positions this morning.

Prof. Anas Comes out of Jail, Gets Warm Welcome

Kochi: Professor Anas who had been elected to the Block Panchayath in recent election from jail got bail in Muvattupuzha assault case. He came out of the Viyyur jail into the midst of cheering crowd of SDPI activists. Hundreds of people including the leaders of SDPI were waiting outside the jail to receive their leader. SDPI stae general secreatary M K Manoj Kumar presented garlands to Prof. Anas. Thrissur district president of the party P K Usman, Ernakula district presdent Aslam, Palakkad district president Khaja Husain, state coordinator C G Unni etc. were present there.
After that Anas was accorded warm reception at Thrisur and lots of vehicles followed him. In the evening he visited all eight wards of Vanchinadu Block to thank the people who voted for him. Later a public meeting was held at Mavinchuvadu to welcome Prof. Anas. Meeting was inaugurated by SDPI state general secretary M K Manoj Kumar.
Prof. Anas said that he was innocent and police was charging false case against him.

Ernakulam Additional Sessions Judge V Shircy had granted him bail yesterday on the ground that there was no evidence against the 47th accused in the case as per the remand report and prosecution failed to prove the same. Judge also said that Anas was not involved directly or indirectly in the crime at any stage of attack. Mere participation in a rally organised in protest against the arrest of the culprits in the case can not be construed as the collaboration in the crime, court added. And the court also observed that it is unlawful to put such a person behind bars more than 90 days. However the bail applications of other accused were rejected.
Anas got the bail on a bond of Rs. one lakh and two solvent sureties for the like amount. He has been asked to appear before the investigating officers every Saturday and Monday and surrender his passport within five days of his release.
Anas was elected from the Vazhakulam panchayat during the recent civic polls, defeating both the Congress led UDF and CPI(m) led LDF candidates by big margin. He contested the polls as candidate of Socialist Democratic Party (SDPI).

Kozhikkode: SDPI has alleged that UDF good show in local bodies election in Kerala owes to the alliance it has forged with BJP and anti incumbency factor against Left Front government.
The state government run by V S Achuthanandan has become most hated one by the people of the state because of its corruption and stubbornness. The backward and dalit communities have suffered unjustified difficulties at the hands of police and they had been implicated in false cases. The people were protesting against the government that made a mockery of the people and the judicial system through the ballots.
At the same time it is evident that UDF has entered in electoral tie-ups in the state, said SDPI secretariat.
Secretariat has lauded the people who helped the party to open its account in the state. The electoral victory of SDPI is a warning for those people who are trying to suppress the attempts from backward, dalit, minority communities for their empowerment, labeling it with terrorism and extremism, statement said.

SDPI demands arrest of RSS ideologue Indresh Kumar in Ajmer blast case

New Delhi: The Social Democratic Party of India, (SDPI), has demanded the arrest of Indresh Kumar, a member of the National Executive Council of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, (RSS), who has been named as chief conspirator in the charge-sheet in the October 2007 Ajmer blast case. The name of former RSS Pracharak from Madhya Pradesh Sunil Joshi, who was killed in broad daylight in Dewas in Madhya Pradesh, has also figured in the charge-sheet filed by the Rajasthan ATS in the Ajmer blast case.
The SDPI national general secretary A. Sayeed in a statement said that since the charge-sheet filed by the Rajasthan Police's Anti-Terrorist Squad, (ATS), in the court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate on October 23 names Indresh Kumar as a conspirator, he should also be made an accused in the case, questioned and arrested forthwith without any delay. He was present when the conspiracy to carry out a blast at the Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti shrine in Ajmer was hatched.
It is pity that ATS has not mentioned the name of RSS because of its clout over the investigating agencies. It is observed that whenever any activist of RSS is involved in blast cases the investigating agencies remain silent which gives it (RSS) ample opportunity to wriggle out unscathed from the tight situation. While in case of Muslims being the accused the agencies are always keen in mentioning even very remote links to any organizations.
Meanwhile, BJP's open rumblings for Indresh Kumar and earlier support for Malegaon blast accused Ms Pragya Thakur and Lt. Col. Purohit together with the links between the blasts at Ajmer shrine and Hyderabad's Makkah Masjid goes to prove beyond doubt its hand-in-glove relationships with the radical Hindutva groups.
It may be pointed here that "disciplined" RSS started derailing from the incident of Mhow, a small town near Indore, when some saffron outfit workers led by late Sunil Joshi executed Nainama murder to avenge chopping off RSS worker's pony. Instead of condemning the incident, a few saffron leaders praised it which ingrained "eye for eye" attitude in many. And thereafter, incidents of retaliation by saffron activists increased and wore even ugly face of terror blasts. As such today Hindu terror is a reality, no matter whether the RSS accepts it or not.
Thus, it would not be out of place to demand re-investigation of all blast cases in the country since 1992 in the light of ATS revelation regarding the involvement of top RSS leaders in Ajmer blast case. Furthermore, the Central and concerned state governments should immediately release all the innocent Muslim youths who have been jailed in those blast cases and provide adequate compensation to them

SDPI Creates History in Kerala; Bags 14 Seats in Debut Election

Kozhikkode: Newly formed Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) has made a good show in local bodies elections in Kerala. It has bagged 13 seats including 5 municipal seats and one blcok panchayath ward.
It got one seat each at Kannur, Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Kasarkode and Palakkdu districts. SDPI candidate Sufeera came victorious from Kasanakkotta South ward- 15th ward of Kannur municipality with 325 votes. Her nearest rival Haseena P from Indian National league of UDF got 290 votes.
In Thodupuzha municipality of Idukki district, Subaida Teacher of SDPI from Keerikkode ward has won with 310 against defeating Shakeela Salim of INC who got only 298 votes.
In Pathanamthitta municipality, Kulashakharapathi ward, SDPI candidate Shilaja won woth 244 votes. Safeena of Muslim League got 230 votes. In Shornur municipality of Palakkad district SDPI independent Beena defeated M S Prasanna of INC 80 votes. In Kasarkode municipal ward of Kollambady, SDPI backed independent Majeed Kalambady defeated Sainuddeen Haji of Muslim League by 32 votes.
And it was stunning victory for Prof. Anas of SDPI who was elected from Vazhakkad Block, Vanchinadu Division. Being imprisoned in Muvattupuzha assault case against college professor, he had contested the election from Viyyoor central jail. He amassed 3992 votes, while his rival got 2089 votes.
Apart from these seats SDPI has bagged a couple of seats in various grama panchayaths.
In Kunjunnikkara grama panchayath ward of Ernakulam district SDPI candidate Seenath Jaleel won by the margin of 32 votes. She defeated Najumi Shamsu of Muslim League. SDPI candidate N N Binu Narayanan won the Mathakkal ward in Irattupetta panchayath.
Also in Manjeswaram panchayath of Kasarkode SDPI got a stunning victory, where as Maimoona defeated Rukiyya of Muslim League in Machampady ward by 63 votes.
In Thrissur district also SDPI got a seat in grama panchayath. Shamila Kabeer of SDPI gained victory over her rival Sukhanya Biju, independent in Pazhunna ward of Chovvannur panchayath.
In 10th ward of Kulashekharapuram grama panchayath of Kollam, SDPI backed independent A Naser got a stunning victory by a huge majority of 418 votes. UDF candidate Unnikrishna Pillai could win only 301 votes while Naser bagged 719 votes. One more SDPI candidate tasted victory from Kollam district. It was Amina who won 15th ward of Poruvazhi panchayath for SDPI. In Malappuram district also SDPI opened its account through an independent Kadeeja Shams who defeated Jameela Basheer of INC by huge margin of 267 votes.
The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) has registered an impressive victory in the local body elections in Kerala, securing majority in two of the five City Corporations and 38 of the 59 municipalities.
The CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) retained Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam Corporations and secured 16 municipalities. It has secured a lead in 5,887 grama panchayats, 757 block and 122 district panchayat divisions. The results of the Corporations and the municipalities were the first to be announced as electronic voting machines were used there. A final picture is expected to emerge by Thursday evening. Counting at the Kozhikode Corporation will be taken up on October 31.
The BJP has improved upon its tally compared to the previous local body polls. The party has got significant representation in Thiruvananthapuram Corporation — six seats, two in Kochi, one in Thrissur and 76 seats in various municipalities, the highest of 15 in Palakkad municipality. The party candidates finished runners-up in eight wards in Thiruvananthapuram Corporation. The party will play a crucial role in deciding the rulers in four municipalities. The SDPI has also opened its account by securing one seat each in Kannur and Thodupuzha municipalities.
A distinct feature of the local body elections this time is that 50 per cent of the over 21,000 seats are reserved for women in the multi-tier local self-government bodies.
The UDF wrested the Kochi Corporation from the LDF after three decades, winning 46 out of the 74 seats. The LDF won 23 wards and the BJP, 2 and Independent, 3. The UDF also emerged victorious in the Thrissur Corporation, winning 44 out of the 55 seats. Here, the LDF got six seats, the BJP, one and Independents, four seats.
The LDF has retained the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation winning 51 out of the 100 seats, leaving 41 to the UDF, six to the BJP and two to Independents. The LDF won the Kollam Corporation for a third successive term bagging 34 out of the 55 seats. The UDF got 18 seats and others, three seats.
The UDF won the lone municipality in Wayanad district, Kalpetta, capturing 20 of the 28 wards. In Malappuram, the UDF retained power in Malappuram, Manjeri and Tirur municipalities and toppled the LDF in Ponnani and Perinthalmanna municipalities. The UDF will rule the newly-formed Kottakkal and Nilambur municipalities. In the campaign, both the LDF and UDF had described the civic body elections, held on October 23 and 25, as a referendum on the government's performance.

Kerala civic polls: Over 75 pc polling in second phase

Thiruvananthapuram: Over 75 percent voting was recorded in local bodies elections in seven districts of Kerala on Monday, officials said. Polling passed off mostly peacefully, barring skirmishes reported from a few places.
According to preliminary figures released by the State Election Commission, the poll percentage has crossed 75 percent, up from 62.71 percent in these districts in last edition of the polls in 2005.
In the first phase of the elections Oct 23 in seven districts, 75.33 percent voting was recorded.
Counting will be held on Wednesday with Kerala set to become India's first state to see women heading 50 percent (605) of the total 1,208 local bodies.
These include 489 gram panchayats, 76 block panchayats, seven district panchayats, 30 municipalities and three corporations in the state.
A State Election Commission spokesperson told that the total seats for which polls was held was 21,612 and of these, 11,135 seats are kept for women.
'Of these, 8,613 seats would be the grama panchayats, 1,051 in block panchayats, 169 district panchayats, 1,121 in municipalities and 181 in the five corporations. The general rule is that in a panchayat if the total number of members is an odd number, then the total number of women would be one more than the men,' the spokesperson said.
A total of 70,915 candidates were in the fray. Electronic voting machines (EVMs) were being used only in corporations and municipalities, while traditional ballot papers are being used in the gram, block and district panchayats.
The local bodies elections were last held in 2005 and since then all the five corporations in the state are being governed by the LDF, which is also in power in 11 of the 14 district panchayats, 33 of 53 municipalities, 114 of 152 block panchayats and 688 out of 984 gram panchayats as well.
A sub-inspector of police was hacked and hospitalised at Thakazhi in Alappuzha, following a dispute between CPI-M and BJP workers over alleged bogus voting, official sources said. Some stray incidents of violence were reported in Palakkad, Kottayam and Idukki also.

Repolling was held in seven booths in the politically volatile Kannur district where polling was marred by violence on Saturday, triggering a war of words between CPI-M and Congress leaders. UDF has boycotted elections in two booths here following CPM attacks against its cadres.
In the second phase also Social Democratic Party of India was very active in all seven districts. It’s estimated that the party would show its strength in districts like Malappuram, Kollam, Idukki, Kannur and Alappuzha. Elections analysers have attributed the high turnout throughout the state to the active participation of SDPI in the process

Kannur: SDPI Activist Attacked by CPM Workers

Kuthuparamba: Social Democratic Party of India activists here was brutally attacked by CPM workers here. Basheer (32) was on his way back home from mosque after evening prayer yesteday, a group of 15 CPM workers attacked him by swords and other weapons at Thokkilangadi near here. Basheer who was injured seriously has been admitted at a private hospital in Kozhikkode.
The attack was beleived to be carried out as a revenge against SDPI whose booth agent had prevented CPM workers who tried to cast bogus votes on Saturday here. There was a clash betwen the two groups following the incident.
Witnesses to the grusome attack said that CPM workers were led by Prbhulal from Kaithery, Jithu from Palapparamba, Jijo son of Geetha etc.

Sporadic violence in Kerala civic poll, 75 pc polling

Thiruvananthapuram: 75.72 per cent polling was recorded today in the first phase of local body elections in Kerala covering seven districts which was marred by sporadic violence in some parts of the state. Coming as it does six months before the assembly elections, both ruling CPI(M)-led LDF and opposition Congress-led UDF saw the civic polls as a test for the bigger battle due in May next year.
Social Democratic Party of India, newly formed political organizations with support base of Muslims and Dalits, is also testing their waters first time in Kearala civic polls and also Janakeeya Munnani under the auspices of Jama-athe Islami. SDPI has fielded more than 2,500 candidates throughout Kerala.
A distinct feature of the civic elections this time is that 50 per cent of the seats are reserved for women, giving them a decisive role in grassroot level politics. Police fired two rounds in the air at Kannavam in the politically volatile Kannur District to disperse a group of alleged BJP supporters who attacked them with stones and countrymade bombs, sources said. Minor scuffles involving workers of BJP, CPI-M and Muslim League were reported from parts of Kannur and Kozhikode districts. However, none was injured in the violence.
Election authorities ordered repoll in two booths in ward 7 of the Pattuvam grama panchayat following complaints by the United Democratic Front (UDF) that the Communist Party of India (Marxist) snatched ballot papers in the booths. The repoll would take place on October 25. Repoll was also ordered in a booth in ward 36 of the Payyannur municipality when the electronic voting machine was allegedly destroyed. In another incident, the UDF had reportedly boycotted polling in ward 7 of Cheruthazham grama panchayat after complaining that the Left Democratic Front (LDF) workers cast bogus votes. There were reports of cases of alleged clashes and intimidation of booth agents in some parts.
UDF candidate in Temple Ward in the Kathirur panchayat Pothuvattil Sreedharan alleged that CPI (M) snatched voters’ lists from two UDF booth agents. The CP I(M) workers there said that the election in the polling station at the Government Vocational Higher Secondary School at Kathirur was peaceful. Large number of police personnel was deployed outside the polling station in view of the tension. Three people were injured in the clash between CPI(M) and Indian Union Muslim League workers at Thavam in Cherukunnu.
According to State Election Commission sources, slightly 75.72 per cent of the more than one crore voters cast their ballots in the seven districts that went to polls today. The highest turnout of 76 per cent was recorded in Kozhikode, followed by Wayanad, Kasaragod (75 each), Kannur (73), Pathanamthitta (71), Kollam (69) and Thiruvananthapuram (58). There are 29,901 candidates in the fray for 9,238 wards spread around three-tier panchayats and urban civic bodies. The next phase of polling covering the remaining seven districts would be held on October 25 for which the campaign ended this evening. Counting would be held on October 27.
In another incident, a polling official on duty identified as Sadanandan (48) died at the polling booth at Sree Narayanam L.P. School in ward 56 at Madapathur here. He died after fainting at the booth just after the polling began. The polling continued in the booth.

Where Discrimination Ends, Development will Come: E Aboobacker

Kozhikkode: Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) will vote in the local bodies election in Kerala where SDPI candidates are not contesting for the candidates who were working for the interests of dalit, adivasi, backward and minority communities, informed state president Adv. K P Muhammed Shareef and general secretary Abdul Majeed Faizee.
Leaders also requested the people of the state to vote for SDPI candidates who were working for the development and betterment of the state social and economical emancipation of marginalised sections. THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: One of the important features of Kerala’s local bodies election to be held in two phases on Saturday and Monday is the strong presence of newly formed political party, Social Democratic Party of India SDPI). As the campaign for the first stage of the local body election campaign drew to a close on Thursday, SDPI has succeeded in making its presence felt in almost all parts of the state with political campaigns outshining the major political fronts, UDF and LDF.
In seven districts- Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod-, that go to the polls on Saturday, SDPI has fielded more than one thousand own candidates and most of them are nurturing winning possibilities. As many as 9,238 seats are up for grabs in these districts.
These elections into local bodies which were described as a dress rehearsal for the 2011 Assembly polls, the parties are engaged in pitched battles. With the strong support base among Muslims and dalits, SDPI can pose a strong challenge to others. In districts like Thiruvananthapuram SDPI has entered in poll alliance with BSP.
Right from the beginning SDPI was in the forefront of election campaign. And young candidates fielded by the party could reach along with other experienced parties. The political messages they have put forward, like ‘people’s panchayath’, ‘power to people’- have gone too well with the people.
Party leaders are of the opinion that the discontent among the people against the anti people policies of state and central governments would turn the voters towards SDPI.
SDPI general secretary P Abdul Majeed Faizy said that popular base of the party would get much stronger by the local body elections in Kerala. The party is contesting alone in around 2500 wards all over the state.
He said that both fronts were trying to divert the attention of people from the real issues like price rise by creating controversies. No party is trying to understand common man’s problems. Both fronts follow an anti-people policy. The ruling class receives money from private monopolies and work for them. SDPI will fight against this kind of anti people attitude of the parties and governments. He also said that SPDI was focusing more on villages than big cities. In this election it will become a party gathering most number of votes by facing the elections on its own.
Polling would be held in seven districts comprising 9238 wards--7186 Gram Panchayats, 878 Block panchayats, 154 district panchayats, 790 Muncipalities and 230 City Corporations. The Largest number of voters is in Thiruvananthapuram district with 23.66 lakh voters.
More than one lakh staff would be deployed for election duty for the polls in seven districts. Electronic voting machines would be used in Municipalities and Corporation wards while ballot boxes would be used in panchayats.
Election for the remaining seven districts-Alappuzha, Idukki, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad and Malappuram would be held on October 25. Counting of votes would be on October 27.
