Lawrie Neville of Warehouse Centre retires from Table Tennis

Lawrie Neville of the Warehouse Centre Plays Last Competitive LeagueMatch. Due to a significant back problem, Lawrie Neville has decided that at the age of 84, he should retire from competitive table tennis. What could have been a sad occasion at The Warehouse Centre became instead a celebration of Lawrie's long career in the sport.

Summer League 2011 - Final Tables

Hadleigh Forum Tournament

Honours shared at the Hadleigh Forum Tournament

Every year one player seems to figure strongly in all events so it was refreshing to see a variety of winners in this year's tournament held at Eastwood Community Centre on Tuesday 10^th May 2011.

The Handicap Singles was won in a very close final by Paul Reed (handicap +7) who plays for Hadleigh Forum in the Basildon League, narrowly defeating Garry Hartgrove (handicap scratch). Paul and Garry had progressed to the final with semi-final victories over Paul Fawell ( - 5) and John Tendler (-5) respectively. The closeness of the majority of the matches in this event indicated the accuracy of the handicapping.

Garry obtained some revenge on Paul in the Handicap Doubles final when partnered by Colin Napper (combined handicap +2) as they were victorious against Paul Reed and David Woolmer (combined handicap +4).

The Straight Singles event went to form, being won by John Tendler who overcame Mick Tappenden in the final.

As always, a most enjoyable evening.

Southend Men's Team joint Champions of InterLeague 2011 Div1

Southend Men's Div1 and Vets Div1 played on 23-24th April the finals of the Essex Table Tennis Association Interleague. The Men's Team finished top as joints Champions with Harlow while the Vets Team finished third with Ilford winning the group. Report from Ken Field, the SDTTL Chairman

John Fell's funeral on 9th May 2011

"An old friend of Southend Table Tennis, John Fell sadly passed away last Sunday. His funeral is on the 9th May at 11.00. at St. Marys Church, Maldon (don't have precis address).

John worked for Tees Sports and supplied Southend with Tables for our Championships for many years. His friends will be welcome at the church".

300ft Bungee Jump - on 25/04/2011 - Andy Seabrook

I am doing a 300ft bungee jump(believe to be highest in UK) for charity and looking to see if anyone would sponsor me no matter how big or small the amount.

I am diving in aid of prostate cancer research from which I am sure you are aware that my dad unfortunately passed away after contracting this cancer.

My dad and Howard were the 2 main people that got me into table tennis and kept me interested e.g. taking me to games when he had finished work and to practice!! I also remember how proud he was of me when I won the Trevor Bloxam award and how he used to like the atmosphere at matches where there was no argueing, just everyone there to enjoy themselves (although I remember him getting very frustrated when he lost all his games in the 4th Division when helping me out as we had no players)!

TT on Sea Table Tennis Club

Approximately 18 months ago whilst at our previous premises, TT on Sea was approached by Gordon Steggall, Manager of David Lloyd, Southend and invited to move the club to their facilities. There has recently been a change of management at David Lloyd and they are questioning the club's use of their facilities.

After much thought and consideration the TT on Sea Committee are regrettably writing to inform you that the Club will no longer be operating and Thursday 7th April will be the last session. (There is a match on 14^th April, but no coaching session).

Sadly, this is the end for TT on Sea table tennis club sessions. However we have spoken to other local junior clubs running coaching sessions who are happy to welcome our players. Details of clubs are attached together with useful websites where you will be able to find out about tournaments and events that maybe of interest to you.

May we take this opportunity to thank you for supporting the club and we wish you all the very best for the future.

Rawreth’s Dave Calleja, a native of Malta, arranged a Table Tennis Tour of his homeland, for a group of Rawreth Table Tennis’s Club’s leading players. The squad comprised: Dave Calleja, George Reeves, Kevin Read, Babul McLeod, Andrew Halling, Duncan Taylor, John Poysden, Keith Adams and Ken Field: sadly Charles Sweeny had to pull out at the last minute through illness. SDTTL Championships 2011: Alex Abbott (Legra A) wins the Men's Singles and Emily Godfrey (TT-on-Sea) wins the Ladies Singles.

Also wins for Kevin Read & Duncan Taylor on Mens Doubles and Keith Philips & Keith Adams on Vets Doubles. Vets Singles trophy was won by the on-form Alex Abbott. The mixed Doubles trophy was won by Stuart Gibbs and Janeth Finch.
