AALEAD’s mission is to support low-income and underserved Asian Pacific American youth with educational empowerment, identity development. They provide leadership opportunities through after school, summer, and mentoring programs.

As Asian-American immigrants, we have first-hand experience settling into a new country. Education was a critical need for us to be successful and remains a major priority. We understand how important it is to help shape children in becoming bright and confident adults.  

Building a bicultural identity is a balancing act for many Asian-Americans. Some identify with their Asian side when around family but stick to their American side around non-Asian peers, wanting to feel comfortable and accepted in both communities.

Embracing both parts of their identity can have significant effects on the mental and emotional health of Asian Americans. By providing mentorship to young people in underserved Asian Communities, AALEAD provides lifelong coping skills. 

Kids can gain clarity about their thoughts and feelings which may help them recover from emotional triggers. Learning to communicate their needs is the key to better relationships and confidence.

A strong education with support from parents, teachers, and mentors helps children to excel during trying times and throughout their lives.

AALEAD connects youth with adult mentors to foster a healthy sense of self-identity, pride, and a safe place to express the complex feelings of living in a multicultural society. Kids who participate in AALEAD programs are able to explore new interests, hobbies, and are motivated to pursue higher education.

AALEAD Story

AALEAD was founded in 1998 by Ms. Sandy Dang to initially serve the large Vietnamese refugee population in the District. Ms. Dang witnessed the same needs and types of challenges she faced as a recent refugee to the United States just a few years back. Her vision was to create and grow a community organization that belonged to the community. The rest is history!

The organization initially served a large Vietnamese refugee and immigrant population in Washington, DC. With changes in demographics over the years in the region, AALEAD now serves a multi-ethnic Asian community. In 2006, AALEAD expanded to serve low-income and underserved Asian Pacific American youth in middle and high school in Montgomery County, MD. 

The Impact of AALEAD

Here are some of the amazing ways that AALEAD has impacted Asian American youth with its programs.

• 82% of all youth attended at least 3 career workshops
• 97% of Elementary School youth will participated in at least 2 life skills or study skills workshops.
• 100% of 5th grade youth will participated in one-on-one discussions about Middle School and be supported through the lottery process with an AALEAD staff member.
• 100% of High School seniors participated in one-on-one college prep discussions and were supported through the college application process with an AALEAD staff member
• 72% of all high school youth had college 2 college prep activities

• 86% of all youth in after school programs participated in at least 5 Asian American Identity workshops
• 90% of all youth in after school programs participated in at least 3 mental health workshops
• 88% of all youth in after school programs participated in at least 3 cross-racial activities

• 91% of all youth participated in at least 3 leadership workshops
• 74% of youth completed at least 5 hours of Student Service Learning (SSL) activities

sea buckthorn oil may reduce sunburn, radiation damage, acne, dermatitis, dry skin, eczema and may protect mucous membranes. It also suggests that it may help heal wounds, bed sores, burns and cuts. Atopic skin annoyances react positively to seabuckthorn oil, according to the study due to it increasing the plasma fatty acids.  A separate study was sited within the Hamdard University study. This research studied 30, 61-year-old women. They were given 2 grams of sea buckthorn oil for three months. They reported an increase in skin hydration and skin elasticity. This study concluded that sea buckthorn had anti-wrinkle effects.

Meibomian gland dysfunction and abnormal tear film lipids are the cause of dry eyes. Sea buckthorn oil contains antioxidants, omega 7, linoleic acid, tocopherols and carotenoids. According to research, these nutrients are beneficial to aid in reducing inflammation, redness and itching in dry eyes.

Blood Pressure Issues

Sea buckthorn oil was found to be 2.4 times more potent than other oils. The linoleic and linolenic acid along with carotenoids, flavonoids and phytosterols are responsible for the high antioxidants in the oil. These antioxidants were found to contribute to maintaining less free radical production.

Sea Buckthorn oil Extraction Process

Sea buckthorn oil can be extracted from the seed or the pulp of the fruit.  The preferred extraction method is SuperCritical Carbon Dioxide extraction. The result of this extraction process is refined oil from the seeds and berries along with omega fatty acids and many other useful nutrients. The fruit oil(berry oil) is dark red or reddish orange and thicker than the seed oil. The seed oil is yellow or pale orange with a musky odor.

Due to the increasing number of women in postmenopausal state, and the risks associated with the standard treatment of vaginal atrophy with estrogen, there is a need for alternative means for maintaining healthy vaginal mucosa. Free radicals are oxygen-containing molecules with an uneven number of molecules. These free radicals can cause a large chain chemical reaction in the body. This is because they react so easily with other molecules.  These reactions are called oxidation.

In fact, we produce free radicals in our bodies naturally through exercise or inflammation.  But, a diet high in sugars, fats and alcohol can contribute to excess free radical production. The best way to fight against free radicals leading to oxidative stress is to increase your antioxidants. Increasing antioxidants will decrease the formation of free radicals.

Phenolic Compounds & Berries

Frontiers in Pharmacology published a study that discusses berries and phenolic compounds and their effects on oxidative stress. According to the study, berries have phenolic compounds.  Phenolic compounds are a substance found in plants and that have antioxidant properties. They are an essential part of the human diet.

These compounds are produced by thousands of plants recognized all throughout the plant kingdom. They are found mostly in fruits, leaves and seeds. They are often associated with their ability to fight against ultraviolet radiation and pathogens.

Phenolic compounds have a variety of health benefits that are thought to be responsible for the fight against many chronic diseases and cancer.  According to the Frontiers' study, they also have antioxidants that help prevent against aging. It states that the phenolic compounds in berries are a solid source to obtain nutrients.

“Berries are... also a rich source of a wide variety of nutritive compounds, including sugars (glucose, fructose) and minerals. (phosphorus, calcium, iron, potassium, magnesium, manganese, sodium and copper)”

Important Nutrients in Berries

Iron and Manganese are important components of antioxidant enzymes. In addition, berries contain a large number of Vitamins, C and E.  The vitamins act as major antioxidants and may reduce inflammation. The study suggests that black currants and sea buckthorn berries have a hefty concentration of vitamin C. Sea buckthorn berries have about 600 mg per 100 g of fruit. Even more so, the study states that sea buckthorn oil is a rich source of fatty acids and unsaturated fats. These fatty acids have a beneficial effect on cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative disease and cancer.

Also, sea buckthorn oil is considered a good source of healthy phenolic compounds when the oil is extracted from the berry pulp and seeds.

All these compounds combined have a powerful and multi-functional effect on human health.  

But, the chemical composition and health benefits of a particular berry depends on a variety of factors. These factors are:

Sea buckthorn berries and the products they produce are not the only healthy berry obviously. Darker berries serve as powerful antioxidants as well. Why? For some of the same reasons as sea buckthorn berries. Also, darker berries contain anthocyanins. Anthocyanins are a class of compounds that have natural antioxidant effects. This compound gives plants their rich colors like, red, blue and purple.

Conclusion

In a healthy person, the free radicals are kept in balance with antioxidants. As stated earlier, this prevents oxidative stress. Berries have medicinal effects against diseases associated with oxidative stress like cancer, neurodegenerative diseases and arthritis. They credit the fight against these diseases to a berry’s high phenolic antioxidant content. In addition, berries have high levels of vitamins A, C and E, which may act as antioxidants.  

Studies state that berries as a whole are considered a natural gift to human health due to these phenolic antioxidants. Berries and the products they produce are an integral part of human health. But, phenolic compounds vary from berry to berry and the processing method can affect its nutritional value. Food processing procedures like high-temperature treatments are a major factor for destroying nutrients and affecting antioxidants.

The recommended daily intake of phenolic compounds are not known and may be impossible to determine.

One of my latest discoveries is seabuckthorn berry oil (from Seabuckwonders). As a nutricosmetic, I add a few drops to my water, juice or smoothies. As a topical, I add 3 to 5 drops to my usual facial mask. It will turn the mask orange but washes off easily. By adding as a topical treatment, my skin instantly feels renewed and radiant (above what my typical mask could provide). Radiation is a treatment often used for cancer. Unfortunately, the effects of radiation on the body can be harsh. For more than a half a century, many efforts were made to find a solution for the negative affects patients experience. Some common issues that patients endure are gastrointestinal syndrome, nausea, diarrhea and dehydration. Studies say that gastronomical problems contribute to the death of patients after radiation. Unfortunately, the FDA has yet to approve anything that will aid post radiation issues. But, in 2017 the Journal of Radiation Research published a study. This study suggests that sea buckthorn pulp and seed oil may be beneficial against health issues after radiation. Although the FDA has not approved this treatment either, it’s worth exploring.

Sea buckthorn oil and sea buckthorn pulp oil are natural herbs from the sea buckthorn tree that grows in Europe and Asia. It's used in Chinese, Tibetan and Mongolian traditional medicine. These cultures use it for many things including gastric ulcers and circulatory disorders.

The Experiment

For the experiment, they used various groups of mice. The mice received either sea buckthorn oil, sea buckthorn pulp oil, olive oil or a saline solution. After receiving these substances once a day for seven days, they exposed the mice to full body radiation. The idea of the study was to determine how severe the intestinal injuries were on the mice after radiation. They wanted to determine if the olive oil, sea buckthorn pulp and seed oil would affect these issues. Lastly, the study wanted to see how much longer each group of mice would live after receiving a pretreatment of oil.

Results

Approximately 72 hours after the mice received their radiation treatment, scientists harvested intestinal tissues. The mice who received olive oil lived 4.5 days. The mice who received sea buckthorn pulp oil and seed oil lived an average of 8 to 10 days. Both groups who received sea buckthorn pulp and seed oil also reduced weight loss after radiation. The group who received saline solution died from severe intestinal edema and necrosis. The study says that the sea buckthorn pulp and seed oil weakened the force of radiation-induced intestinal injuries. This resulted in the mice living longer.

 The scientists who conducted the experiment compared the seed and pulp oil against the olive oil. Although both contain fatty acids, they believe the PLA (Palmitoleic acid) and ALA (alpha linolenic acid) in the sea buckthorn pulp and seed oil are the most important components. The study says that these properties fought against radiation-induced injuries. Also, the sea buckthorn pulp and seed oil reduced anti-inflammatory effects in various tissues. Furthermore, it suppressed skin injuries from the ultraviolet rays. But, the study indicates that there are other unknown components of the sea buckthorn pulp and seed oil that helped the ALA and PLA. According to the study, the properties worked with the PLA and ALA to reduce the negative effects of radiation in the mice. Although this treatment is not a cure for radiation injuries, the study says that sea buckthorn pulp and seed oil helped the mice live longer.

Although we are a long way from an FDA approved treatment with sea buckthorn oil, sea buckthorn oil is an amazing supplement for many health issues. There are two common varieties of sea buckthorn oils which come from the seed and the fruit of the plant. While both offer benefits for the skin, their nutritional profiles are different. Interesting History

The oldest records of the use of SBT as a remedy go back to ancient China and Tibet. It was recorded in the some of the first medical books in Tibet around 770 AD! It was and still remains wildly popular in Russia. The ancient Greeks also loved and used it. In fact, it's name Hippophae Rhamnoidesis derived from Hippo in Latin which means Horse and the word Phaos which means Shine. The name came about because horses were often fed SBT and as a result, their coats became soft and shiny.

You may have noticed recently negative press regarding the effects of Palmitic acid. These claims are misleading and we want to provide consumers with the facts. Would like to clear the air and lay to rest any doubts or concerns raised by this information.

Understanding the information that is out there

 You may have heard that palmitic acid can cause inflammation, negatively effect good cholesterol levels thus endangering heart health and effect insulin response causing problems for diabetics. The truth behind this information lies in understanding the application of the study which it came from.

• The negative effects outlined in this study where from Isolated Palmitic Acid.
• When applied by itself in a study, Palmitic Acid had negative effects.
• Palmitic Acid does not exist by itself or in an isolated form within food or supplements.                       

 So how does palmitic acid behave in it’s natural form? Palmitic Acid doesn’t hurt our bodies when we consume it in food because it is balanced in food (and in our bodies) with something called oleic acid, you may also know it as Omega 9. Foods that have in palmitic acid almost always are high in oleic acid or Omega 9, too. If for some reason the level of palmitic acid in your blood became too high from something you ate, your liver will use something called Delta 9 desaturase to modify the palmitic acid to make it suitable for your body.

• Sodium Palminate (the form that is used in foods and other products) is an approved ingredient in Organic products.
• The fat that protects our lungs is 68% Palmitic Acid, it exists naturally in our bodies!
