JAKARTA - Indonesia bisa sedikit bernafas lega setelah tiga cabang olahraga tambahan bisa dimainkan pada SEA Games XXV 2009, Laos. Cabang olahraga panahan, angkat besi dan balap sepeda akan dipertandingkan di pesta olahraga se-Asia Tenggara.Harapan Indonesia sebenarnya ada enam cabang tambahan yang bisa dipertandingkan tahun depan. Selain tiga cabang di atas, perahu naga, kano dan perahu tradisional sempat diperjuangkan. Namun, Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) hanya meloloskan panahan, angkat besi dan balap sepeda. Sementara, olahraga dayung tidak diloloskan.Tidak dipertandingkannya olahraga dayung, bukan tanpa alasan. Ketua KONI/KOI Rita Subowo menjelaskan jika perahu naga, kano dan perahu tradisional sebenarnya hampir menjadi cabor di SEA Games. Namun, kondisi alam di Laos tidak memungkinkan untuk memainkan itu."Debit air di sana sedang berkurang pada saat SEA Games diselenggarakan. Jadi pertandingan olahraga dayung tidak bisa dilaksanakan. Sebenarnya kita masih menunggu hingga hari ini, hanya saya rasa keputusan 25 cabor dengan tambahan tiga cabor sudah final," jelas Rita Subowo, Kamis (13/11/2008), yang ditemui di kantor pusat KONI.Kategori I adalah atletik dan aquatik (termasuk renang, menyelam dan polo air). Sementara kategori II adalah bulutangkis, billiar, tinju, sepakbola (putra dan putri), golf, judo, karate-do, sepak takraw, menembak, tenis meja, taekwondo, tenis, bola voli (in-door dan pantai), gulat dan wushu. Pada kategori III, muay thai, pentanque, pencak silat dan shuttle cock. Serta cabang tambahan, sepeda, panahan dan angkat besi.Regulasi lain yang akan diterapkan di Laos nanti adalah, pembatasan peserta pada setiap cabor. Untuk satu cabor, setiap negara hanya diperbolehkan menurunkan empat nomor. Keputusan ini diambil agar tidak ada lagi sapu bersih dalam setiap cabor.Mengenai target kontingen Indonesia, seperti biasa Rita Subowo mencoba bersikap diplomatis. "Jika bicara target saya hanya bisa mengatakan semoga SEA Games nanti akan lebih baik dari SEA Games sebelumnya," tutup Rita.

Lao footballers take on Myanmar in first match

The matches will take place on December 3 and 5 at the National University of Laos stadium and the National Stadium. Lao Men's Football Team Manager Viphet Sihachakr said yesterday he thought his team would play five matches in the tournament because the players were well prepared both in terms of training and fitness. “ Myanmar is a strong SEA Games team. They were runners-up at the 24th SEA Games in Thailand in 2007 but that's in the past. Today I believe our athletes can do better than before due to our experience from the many test matches we played,” he said. Lao footballers lost many tournaments in the run-up to the 25th SEA Games. But coaches and team assistants have worked hard to improve the players' skills and the team manager has confirmed the team's performance is already 30 percent better since their last match. “One thing we have to remember is that playing at home we have an advantage because our supporters will be cheering us on, just as they did at the 4-Nations Football Tournament. I was delighted to see so many Lao fans in the stadium all shouting for us. This is just great for our players,” Mr Viphet said. He asked football fans to continue to cheer on the players, saying their support would make them stronger and better able to fight for their country. Lao hopes are also riding with the women's football team. Lao Women's Football Team Manager Ms Valy Vessaphong said she had asked Myanmar to send a team for a friendly game in Laos before the SEA Games but they declined, saying they were too busy. “This will be a big match because we've never met them since we lost to them 0-6 at the 24th SEA Games. But now things are different. Our players have improved and are ready for their first match,” Ms Valy said. She said Myanmar might not be aware of how much the Lao team had improved and Laos also didn't know, but the match would be the true testing ground. After today's match against Myanmar , the women's team will play Thailand on December 8, Malaysia on December 11 and Vietnam on December 13. December 16 will be the final day of the tournament. Matches will take place at the National University of Laos and the Chao Anouvong Stadium. The men's football team begins its campaign tomorrow against Myanmar and will face Indonesia on December 7 and Singapore on December 10 at the National Stadium and Chao Anouvong Stadium.

The full-dress rehearsal of the opening ceremony of the 25th edition of the SEA Games this evening at the Main Stadium is a welcome teaser for the main event which will be held at the same venue on Dec 9. With tickets to the grand opening ceremony already sold out, the organising committee’s decision to allow fans, supporters and enthusiasts the chance to get a taste of what’s to come should certainly be lauded. Since the Main Stadium could only accommodate up to 20,000 spectators, the full dress rehearsal today will at least give the populace the chance of getting a glimpse come 9 Dec. Just to show their enthusiasm, spectators already began making their way into the stadium, situated some 16km out of the capital city of Vientiane, as early as three hours before the start. The event began with an assembly of songs before the choir of the Department of Performing Arts began their ensemble with four popular traditional songs. First up was the National Flower Cham Pa Muong Lao song, to be followed by the Land of Freedom song, the Mother Land song and then with a chorus of a number simply called, Sabaidee or welcome in Lao.
Full-dress rehearsal of the opening ceremony of the 25th edition of the SEA GamesFollowing the announcement of the arrivals of Loas dignitaries, government leaders and VIP guests, the ceremony moved into the parade of athletes who were ushered in by a chorus of the Laos Police Band. The march past then began with the contingent from Brunei Darussalam and culminates with the participants from Laos which was followed by a tumultuous roar of approval from the stand. The taking of the SEA Games oath was preceded by the raising of the Laos national flag - just before the mock run into the stadium by former athletes for the lighting of the SEA Games flame. The much anticipated main event of the cultural and artistic performance then took over with a laser show drumming in as the more than 1,600 dancers take turn to entertain the spectators - much to the satisfaction of all those who attended the event as they gave a rapturous applause at the end.

VIETNAM COAST PAST TIMOR FOR FIRST FULL POINTS

Vietnam picked up their first three points in Group A of the men’s football event when they beat Timor Leste 4-0 in the second match that was played at the Cha Anu Vong Stadium. Vietnam, who had held Thailand to a 1-1 draw in their first game two days ago, struggled somewhat in the first half as Timor tightened up their defence to put the score all even at 0-0. The Timorese, who were slugged 11-0 by Malaysia in their opening game, were a lot more composed and restricted Vietnam to several shots from outside the box. But the break proved to be pivotal as head coach Henrique Calisto’s pep talk must have injected some sense of urgency into Vietnam’s game for them to take the lead in the 54th minute. Striker Mai Tien Thanh latched on to a cross from Nguyen Ngoc Anh from the right to blast in the lead much to the satisfaction of their fans in red at the stand as they broke out into cheers. Three minutes later, Vietnam were 2-0 up when Tien Thanh was again in the thick of the action with a shot to the roof of the Timor goal to beat keeper Diamantino for the second time in the game. And just after the hour mark, Pham Thanh Binh made it three goals for Vietnam with a shot from inside the box before Tien Thanh completed his hat-trick with the fourth goal on 78th minute. Thai striker Sompong Soleb put their disappointment behind them when they beat Cambodia 4-0 to pick up their first three points of the men’s football event at the SEA Games in the match that was played at the Chao Anu Vong Stadium. The defending champions, who had romped to the men’s football crown for the last editions of the SEA Games since 1993, did not get the start they wanted in their first game in Group A two days ago when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Vietnam. But this evening, there was no comeback for Cambodia as Thailand easily took a 3-0 lead at the half. The porous Cambodian defence just could not withstood the onslaught of the physically superior Thai side conceding their first goal of the competition in the 19th minute. Off a Arthit Sunthornphit’s cross from the left, striker Sompong Soleb headed home from close range to give Cambodian keeper Samrith Seiha no chance at all. Cambodia attempted to win the possession in midfield but with the influential Khim Borey tightly marked, there was little chance for them to find the equaliser. And Thailand bide their time before delivering the killer blow with two quick goals just before the break. The first was almost identical to the first Thai goal but this time Arthit’s goal was put away by striker Kirati Keawsombut. Seconds later, Sompong grabbed his second of the afternoon when he blasted in from close range to make sure that the cross from Theerathon Bunmathon was not wasted. And Thailand could not have began the second half on a better note then to finish off their opponent with the fourth goal off the game - with Sompong completing his hat-trick in the 49th minute with a well-taken grounder from inside the box. Comfortably in front, the Thais step off the gas somewhat to allow Cambodia more space but with their defence being sturdy as it is, Thailand were in no danger of being caught out. Singapore Summer Youth Olympics 2010 - A Herculean Task For A Tiny Nation

It was a close call between the final Youth Olympic Games host contenders Singapore and Moscow. As suggested by the votes of 53 to 44. The island-nation erupted into a collective delirium although there were skeptics amongst the citizens. There are many factors that worked in Singapore's favour which will be further discussed.

To begin with, Singapore did not see itself in contention as recently as July 2007. The Prime Minister believed it was not ready to host the Games. Firstly, the National Stadium was only demolished last year to make way for a new complex. The Singapore Sports Hub, where the Stadium is located is expected to be completed only in 2011.

The city-state may not have any prior record in hosting events the magnitude of the Olympics. However, it has hosted a regional biennial sporting meet thrice. Hence, Singapore is very much experienced in the planning and organising the logistics involved. The biennial event is the Southeast Asian Peninsula [SEAP] Games in 1973; and its successor, the Southeast Asian [SEA] Games in 1983 and 1993.

But in true Singaporean fashion, everyone from the various government agencies, the various corporations and the man in the street rallied together. Ensuring the Youth Olympics Games come to these shores.

What worked towards Singapore's favour? Chiefly amongst which is the emphasis on youth and efficiency. The Bid included integrated sports, youth and cultural educational programmes. Even the official website has "youth" and "vibrancy" stamped all over. As reflected by the music and that cute animated Olympic flame-carrying mascot.

Other factors that come into play:

* Singapore's reputation for delivering results on time and beyond expectations

* Singapore's compactness means travelling between sporting venues takes up at most 30 minutes

* Advanced physical infrastructures, namely transport and technological

* Singapore's multi-racial, multi-cultural and multi-religious background

* The much-vouched safe and secure environment due to harsh legal penalties that are in place

* English is widely spoken and understood as it is Singapore's business and official language

As such, Games participants, their families/chaperones, the international media and dignitaries may just encounter minimal problems during their stay. In the cosmopolitan city which is recently ranked second, after the United States in terms of Most Competitive Economy. With that said, the tagline "Blazing the Trail" is not only apt for Singapore. But for future Youth Olympic host cities too.

Events Vietnam hopes to win medals

There are quite a lot of sporting events Vietnam hopes to win medals, including boxing (16 sets of medals), Muay Thai (14 sets of medals). These are two events Vietnam once brought home gold medals at the Asian Championship but has not won the title at any Southeast Asian championship.

Although the Vietnamese athletes once won golds in sepak takraw, petanque, volleyball, football at Asian Games, it is very difficult for them to defeat the Thai athletes at this games.

Four events Vietnam are less likely to win golds

These are badminton, golf, table tennis and tennis.

Golf is the only event at the 25th SEA Games Vietnam will join through the fund from the Vietnam Golf Association. With the current level of the Vietnamese golfers, it will take a long time to be able to win medals in this event.

In badminton, Nguyen Tien Minh is among the world’s top 10 best players but it is very difficult for the Vietnamese badminton star to win over his higher ranking rivals from Malaysian and Indonesia.

In table tennis, since Singapore granted the Singaporean citizenship to series of top players from China, wining a bronze has become very valuable for Vietnam.

Apart from four events: badminton, golf, table tennis and tennis, the Vietnamese Sports Delegation is able to win gold medals in all 21 events it will compete out of 25 events at the 25th SEA Games hosted by Laos.

Vietnam’s strength is martial arts

At any Olympic games, athletics and swimming are always the events with the most set of medals. However, these compulsory sporting events are not the Vietnamese athletes’ strength.

In the swimming event, only Nguyen Huu Viet has enough ability to compete for a gold in men's 100m breaststroke. This year, it is possible for him to grab two golds because his recent performance in 200m breaststroke is very impressive.

If all of the four good swimmers: Viet, Long, Hai and Nguyen maintain their performances forms as they did at the past AIG 3, it is possible that for the first time in the history, Vietnam will win three golds in the swimming event at a SEA Games.

Vietnam also has opportunities to win gold medals in springboard.

In the track and field event, there remain only three athletes who are able to snatch golds. They are female runner Vu Thi Huong (100m and 200m), female runner Truong Thanh Hang (800m and 1.500m) and Vu Van Huyen (decathlon).

Meanwhile, many athletes who once won golds or were the favourites such as Bui Thi Nhung and Nguyen Duy Bang (high jump), male runner Nguyen Dinh Cuong (800m and 1.500m) and Le Thi Phuong (pole-vault) were defeated by the athletes from Thailand and Malaysia in recent championships such as AIG 3 and the 2009 Asian Championship.

As a result, of 86 sets of medals in the athletics and swimming events, Vietnam can only grab 10% of the number of medals.

However, the Vietnamese athletes are able to take the lead in a lot of events at the 25th SEA Games, of which Vietnam’s strength is still the martial arts.

There are 21 sets of medals in wrestling and Vietnam hopes to win two thirds of the number of gold medals. In wushu, there are also 21 sets of medals. Vice Chairman of the Vietnam National Olympic Committee confirmed that Vietnam is certain to take the first place in this event. 19 sets of medals in pencak silat, For 19 sets of medals in karatedo and 18 sets of medals in judo, Vietnam has a lot of opportunities to win. Taekwondo used to be Vietnam’s quite strong sporting event, but in the past games, Vietnam only brought home 3 golds. There are 21 sets of medals in this event at the 25th SEA Games.

In shooting – the third most sets of medals at the games (34 sets) – it is expected that Vietnamese shooters will win much more than 8 golds Vietnam grabbed two years ago.

In the last November, the Vietnam national shooting team snatched 28 golds, topping the Southeast Asia Shooting Championship.
