There’s an interesting debate going on over at the forum called NortwestFootball.Net, which talks about former Hawks coach Mike Holmgren “mailing it in” last year as he knew it would be his last with the Hawks.

Below is the story that started the debate, which you can get to by clicking HERE:

710 ESPN Seattle is discussing this issue after Colin Cowherd, citing a source, claimed that Mike Holmgren mailed in his final season, by NFL standards, as head coach of the Seattle Seahawks.

Cowherd’s source said by Week 13, Holmgren had very little energy, was looking forward to retirement, and was working from 9-5 as the signs that Holmgren was mailing it in.

Brock Huard is vehemently denying it, as I’m sure most of the people they’ll have coming on to discuss the matter (Tim Hasselbeck at 11:40am, Damon Huard at 12:05pm, John Clayton at 12:25pm), while Mike Salk is sort of stringing the argument along.

Mike Holmgren pretty much has to stab my family to death in order for me to say something negative about him, but I’m sure by Week 13, and the team was 2-10, had lost all its WRs, his Pro Bowl quarterback, 80% of his starting offensive line, he was pretty deflated at how his final season was going.

It should be noted that in Week 14, the Seahawks, with a patchwork offensive line, outplayed the New England Patriots for much of the game and won their next two games. So if he mailed it in, the JV Seahawks on the field didn’t play like their coach was checking out fishing rods.

Sehawks starting QB Matt Hasselbeck is ready to assume his role as the teams leader in the 2009 season. Just don’t tell that to backup QB Seneca Wallace. Last season the Hawks were a pretty bad football team, but what it did was open the door for Wallace to come in and throw for more than 1,500 yards and 11 TD’s for an injured Hasselbeck.

Now Wallace is back on the bench, but wants to make it known that he has every intention of being a starter again in the NFL. “You always have to have confidence that you can come in and be the starter on any team,” Wallace said. “I always feel that way. I’m adamant about it. And I’m going to keep working to improve each day, and hopefully something happens.”

The 28-year-old QB has talent, and at some point either with the Hawks or not is going to want to get the shot to show it as a starter. He is under contract to the Hawks through this and next season, due to make a base salary of $1.5 million. Could the Hawks use him at WR or another spot? Might not be a bad idea, and one they have tried before.

“As soon as we come back and start getting into training camp maybe, but right now we’re not doing too much,” Wallace said about the possibility of playing other positions. “We’re just trying to grind through this offense, trying to learn the offense and see where it takes us from there.”

Wallace is a weapon, and there’s no question that if the Hawks can use him, they should in this upcoming 09 season.

Seahawks running back T.J. Duckett was on air Tuesday with Mitch Levy, host of the Mitch in the Morning Show in Seattle. Here are a few highlights from the interview:

Duckett didn’t worry last year about talks of him getting cut after training camp despite a rough preseason.

Duckett played for new Seahawks head coach Jim Mora and new Seahawks offensive coordinator Greg Knapp while the three were in Atlanta. Duckett says having that background with Mora and Knapp will benefit his play because he is familiar with what will be asked of him.

Ducket is not a fan of being labeled as a short yardage back because of his size.

The new zone blocking scheme that the Seahawks will implement this season will help Duckett. Duckett said that his style of running is “one cut and go” and that that is what zone blocking is all about for a running back.

Duckett said that he’d like to have more carries, but is focused on winning and will do whatever the Seahawks’ coaching staff asks of him.

When you think of a record holder in career receptions from a major Division One football program, you hardly think of a 5-foot-10 168 pound guy who came to the school as a walk-on at defensive back.

While Deon Butler lacks size, he still made his presence felt on the field at Penn State.

Mel Kiper, ESPN’s draft guru, told Pennlive.com just after Butler was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks with 91st overall selection in the 2009 NFL Draft that he had the wideout ranked higher than teammate Derrick Williams, the number one overall recruit coming into college in 2005 according to Rivals.com.

“[Butler] made an impact play just about every game,” Kiper told Pennlive.com.

At the NFL Combine, Butler ran the fourth fastest 40-yard dash with a time of 4.38 seconds, but some reports had him listed running as fast as 4.28.

Despite having fleet feet, Butler said that he did not think of himself as a one-dimensional receiver and that is why the Seattle Seahawks picked him in the third round.

“They drafted me here because they knew I run good routes, Butler told The Seattle Times in early May. “I never really relied on my speed in college. I’ve always felt good about my route running skills, how fast you get in and out of your cuts.”

The Seahawks shipped the 137th and 213th overall picks in the draft to the New York Giants in order to move up in the draft and get him.

“They showed a lot of interest in me, trading up, and I want to show them I’m worth it,” Butler said, after he was picked during a conference call with reporters covering the draft.

His speed, hands, and route running abilities could come in handy for the Seahawks this year, as Butler can be used in the slot much like another famous former Nittany Lion, Bobby Engram, was used by the Seahawks. In the slot, Butler will be able to use his hands route running skills to play underneath coverage and be a possession receiver when Deon Branch and newly acquired T.J. Houshmandzadeh draw the attention of opposing teams’ secondaries, Butler’s speed will help by providing the Seahawks a much-needed deep threat. The Seahawks ranked 30th in the league last year in completed passes of 20 yards or more.

Even though training camp doesn’t start in Renton until July 30 for the Seahawks’ rookies, new offensive coordinator Greg Knapp has already tested the speedy and sure-handed receiver both on and off the field.

According to ESPN.com’s Mike Sando, Butler made a 50-yard diving touchdown grab after outrunning cornerback Kevin Hobbs during the first day of the minicamp that took place in May. Also, Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck told Sando that Butler was repeatedly called on by Knapp during meetings and that Butler did well.

Butler isn’t getting ahead of himself though, he still knows he has work cut out in order to get playing time this year, let alone make the Seahawks final roster in September, but that he’s used to that thanks to his early days in Nittany Lion blue and white.

“I’m going to have at least three great receivers, maybe more in front of me,” Butler told Seahawks.com’s Tony Ventrella in April. “It’s nothing new for me to work hard and not start out at the top and not be the big man and just be a solid contributor, because that’s how I came into Penn State.”

From: Pro Football Weekly

Widely considered to be the best defensive player available in the 2009 draft when the offseason began, Aaron Curry has done nothing whatsoever to alter that glowing perception.

At this year’s Scouting Combine, the Seahawks’ No. 1 pick emerged from workouts clearly looking like the nation’s No. 1 linebacker, earning the best marks at his position in the 40-yard dash (4.56 seconds), vertical leap (37 inches) and broad jump (10 feet, 4 inches).

Curry also made an excellent impression at the Combine in interviews with the national media.

At the Seahawks’ OTAs and minicamps this offseason, the ’09 draft’s fourth overall selection has picked right up where he left off in Indy, displaying unexpectedly strong pass-rush skills that bode well for a defense that experienced a significant decline last season.

“At the last minicamp, it was the first time he stepped up as a down lineman in passing situations a la Julian Peterson, and he just blew everyone away,” a veteran source on the scene told PFW.

“He’s the only rookie who has been told flat-out that he was going to start from the get-go, and he never stops working. He’s always going 100 miles per hour. At Wake Forest, the focus was more on him dropping into coverage, and he just didn’t have to use his pass-rush skills as much. But they’re very evident.

“The coaches are really excited because, with Curry and Leroy Hill, who had 7½ sacks as a rookie, they have two outside linebackers who can both blitz and drop into coverage, which should make the defense a lot more versatile.”

We hear Curry is also drawing rave reviews off the field.

“They’ve been very impressed with him in the meeting rooms,” the source said. “The coaches are really stressing the need for the players to see the entire picture, to get a better understanding of what the other guys will be doing, and he’s doing that well. He’s also extremely articulate, a great kid who is fun to talk to. You ask him a question, and he always comes back with intelligent, thoughtful answers that just seem to flow very naturally.

“He’s the total package. He’s big and fast, and he’s got really quick hips. You keep looking for the slightest flaw, but there just haven’t been any. The only thing might be that he doesn’t know the entire defense — yet.”

Seahawks fullback Owen Schmitt has come out with a statement after he was arrested on Saturday night southeast of Seattle. The fullback was arrested after he was observed by an officer weaving on the roadway and following too close.

Schmitt issued a statement Thursday apologizing “to the team, the NFL, the fans and my family and friends for my actions and poor judgment.” Schmitt’s blood-alcohol content was listed as .151 and .161. The legal limit in Washington is .08. His arraignment is scheduled for July 8.

After Schmitt’s car was stopped, the officer noticed several signs of intoxication, including the smell of alcohol. Black Diamond police said Schmitt’s blood alcohol level was above the legal limit in Washington of 0.08. Nothing has yet to come out from the league if Schmitt will be suspended.
